A New Partnership Brings Students, Faculty, and Culture Together Across the Atlantic
Educational Borders
Brookdale Community College has expanded its global education opportunities by forming a new partnership with Aarhus Business College in Denmark. The two institutions recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), aiming to foster academic and cultural exchange, providing valuable international learning experiences for students and faculty from both schools. The agreement was officially signed during Brookdale’s Board of Trustees meeting in February, with Dr. David M. Stout, president of Brookdale, and Hans Henning Nielsen, executive vice president for Education at Aarhus Business College, formalizing the collaboration. The partnership seeks to strengthen

educational ties between Denmark and the United States through academic research, student engagement, and shared opportunities.
“This partnership aligns with Brookdale’s mission to provide students with transformative global education opportunities,” said Dr. Stout. “By connecting with Aarhus Business College, we are creating an exchange that enriches learning experiences for students on both sides of the Atlantic.”
Under the terms of the MOU, Brookdale and Aarhus will develop joint academic activities such as conferences and seminars and facilitate the exchange of students, faculty, and administrative personnel. The two institutions will also share educational materials and publications to enhance cross-cultural learning.
One of the first initiatives will be a study tour program in October 2025. This program will bring up to 25 Aarhus students and faculty members to Brookdale. During their visit, the Danish delegation will participate in academic sessions led by Brookdale faculty, engage in cultural exchange with local students, and visit businesses in Monmouth County to learn about American business practices and the local entrepreneurial landscape.
In preparation for the study tour, Nielsen and Linda Buhl Krog, academic dean at Aarhus Business College, visited Brookdale’s campus. They met with faculty and administrators, toured Brookdale’s business programs, and explored local business hubs like Red Bank, Asbury Park, and Bell Works. These visits helped shape future collaboration and provided valuable insights into regional economic opportunities.
Janice Thomas, director of Brookdale’s International Education Center, spoke about the enriching impact of the partnership.
“Students from Brookdale and Denmark will have the opportunity to get to know each other, share their cultures, and learn from one another. That’s one of the best parts of the educational process,” Thomas said.

“THIS PARTNERSHIP ENRICHES
EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS ACROSS BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC”

Nielsen expressed his excitement for the collaboration, noting the shared values between the institutions. “We are particularly impressed by the academic expertise and dedication of your staff, which will further strengthen our collaboration. From the outset, it has been clear that Brookdale and Aarhus share common values. We are both committed to student success and ensuring they achieve their full potential.”
Krog, who has worked in vocational training at Aarhus for 18 years, also highlighted the benefits of the partnership. “What’s truly exciting about this partnership is seeing how education and industry come together to create real opportunities for students. By collaborating internationally, we’re expanding perspectives and giving students the skills they need to succeed in a global workforce,” she said.
The Aarhus delegation also toured Asbury Park, meeting local leaders such as Tom Gilmore, former Director of Economic Development for Asbury Park and current president of the Monmouth Ocean Development Council, Sylvia Sylvia, Director of Business Development for Asbury Park, and Matthew Whelan, executive director of the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce. Whelan spoke about the town’s economy, saying, “We support our businesses, promote tourism, and create events that bring thousands of people to town to keep our economy vibrant year-round.”
Brookdale’s Culinary Education Center left a strong impression on the Danish visitors as well. Professor Michelle Zuppe emphasized the importance of real-world experience for students. “The Culinary Education Center and the hospitality industry in Asbury Park create

incredible opportunities for our students. We’re not just teaching them how to cook—we’re preparing them for real careers in a thriving industry,” Zuppe said. “Through partnerships like this, we’re connecting students with businesses and ensuring they have pathways to success in restaurants, hotels, and beyond.”
The partnership has been facilitated through Brookdale’s International Education Center, led by Janice Thomas, and the Office of Governmental Affairs and Community Relations, overseen by Executive Director Ed Johnson. These departments are also working on securing grant opportunities to support reciprocal study experiences for Brookdale students and faculty in Denmark.
As the institutions prepare for their first exchange programs, the collaboration with Aarhus Business College is seen as a model for future international educational partnerships. This agreement underscores Brookdale’s ongoing commitment to fostering global engagement and preparing students with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

TRANSFORMATIVE PORTRAITS: EMPOWERING STORIES THROUGH
PHOTOGRAPHY

KAT’S BOUTIQUE PHOTOGRAPHY IN WALL, NJ OFFERS TIMELESS PORTRAITS THAT INSPIRE CONFIDENCE, SHOWCASING THE UNIQUE BEAUTY AND STRENGTH OF EVERY CLIENT, FROM ENTREPRENEURS TO MOTHERS.
Ekaterina, known as Kat, is the proud owner of a boutique photography studio in Wall, NJ. She got her first professional camera in 2012 and was immediately captivated by nature, particularly macro photography. “It’s in the small details that we often find the greatest beauty,” she reflects. Capturing these intricate details became a form of meditation for her—a way to slow down and appreciate the world in a more profound way.
“I believe every person I photograph has a unique story, and I want their images to reflect that,” Kat explains.
Her journey into photography became even more personal when she became a mother. Amidst the joy and love, she felt a shift in her identity, as though a part of her had been put on hold. “Becoming a mother made me realize how important it was to reconnect with myself,” Kat shares. Photography became not just a creative outlet, but a way to rediscover her individuality, aspirations, and passion for storytelling—shaping the photographer she is today.
What began as a personal exploration quickly evolved into a career when Kat realized the profound impact photography could have on others. “A single image has the power to empower someone, to make them feel seen and heard,” she says. She witnessed how her work helped women reclaim their confidence and tell their stories in authentic, timeless ways. That moment solidified her belief that photography wasn’t just a profession—it was her calling.
Now, Kat uses her camera to help others see their own strength, beauty, and individuality. Whether through personal branding, headshots, or timeless portraits celebrating every stage of life, her goal is to create images that empower, inspire, and tell a story that is uniquely each client’s. “Every person I photograph has a unique story, and I want their images to reflect that,” Kat explains.

What excites Kat the most about her work is the transformation she witnesses in her clients. “I love watching people go from feeling unsure to radiating confidence,” she says. Many clients come to her studio hesitant, but by the end of the session, they leave with a newfound sense of self. She enjoys helping entrepreneurs elevate their brands, capturing the strength and beauty of motherhood, and creating portraits that truly reflect the essence of a person. “It’s not just about taking a photo; it’s about making someone feel seen, valued, and empowered,” Kat explains. Knowing that her work helps others feel more confident in their business, celebrate a milestone, or cherish a moment in time is what keeps her passionate about what she does.
One of Kat’s biggest inspirations is Annie Leibovitz. “Her ability to capture emotion and tell such powerful stories through portraits is something I deeply admire,” Kat says. She appreciates Leibovitz’s talent for bringing out the personality and depth of her subjects, creating images that are both intimate and powerful. Kat is drawn to work that evokes emotions and loves images that feel both modern and timeless, capturing the true essence of the person in front of the camera.
Monmouth County offers some incredible locations for portrait sessions, and Kat has her favorite spots for capturing beautiful images. “I believe the right setting can make a portrait feel even more personal,” she says. Monmouth Battlefield State Park in Freehold, NJ, is perfect for timeless, serene portraits, especially during the golden hour with its wide-open fields. Holmdel Park, particularly in the spring with blooming flowers, provides a scenic pond and arboretum for natural and beautiful backdrops. Asbury Park Boardwalk and Belmar Beach offer a blend of modern, vibrant energy with classic coastal beauty, ideal for branding and lifestyle portraits. Fisherman’s Cove in Manasquan, NJ, is a hidden gem with rustic waterfront views, perfect for a more relaxed, natural feel. Allaire State Park, located

near her studio in Wall, NJ, features charming historic buildings and lush greenery, making it a versatile location for various portrait styles.
No matter the setting, Kat’s goal is always to create images that feel personal, authentic, and reflective of each client’s unique story. “Photography is a way to capture a moment in time that will never happen again, and that’s something truly special,” she concludes.
TOP 5 HEADSHOT TIPS FOR NJ PROFESSIONALS
“As a New Jersey headshot photographer based in Wall, NJ, I’ve helped countless clients transform their personal brands with photos that exude confidence and authenticity. Here are my top 5 headshot tips for NJ professionals to ensure you shine online and offline.”
1. DRESS TO REFLECT YOUR BRAND
Your outfit is the foundation of a great headshot, so make it count. For New Jersey professionals, this means selecting clothes that match your industry and personal style. A sharp suit conveys authority for corporate roles, while a smart-casual look can highlight creativity for entrepreneurs or artists. The key is to keep it simple—solid colors or subtle patterns ensure the focus stays on you, not your wardrobe. When you book a session at my studio, you’ll get my “What to Wear” guide, designed to help NJ professionals nail the perfect look for your headshot.
• Tip: Avoid busy patterns or bright logos—keep the attention on your face.
• Pro Advice: Bring a few outfit options to your session; we’ll find the one that best represents your brand.

Photography is not just about taking a photo; it’s about making someone feel seen, valued, and empowered in a way that’s uniquely theirs.
2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT LOCATION FOR YOUR HEADSHOT
Location matters, especially in a state as diverse as New Jersey. A studio headshot offers a clean, professional look— perfect for LinkedIn or business cards. But an on-location shoot can tie your brand to iconic NJ spots, like Allaire State Park near Wall or the vibrant streets of Red Bank.
• Tip: Select a studio for a refined, professional edge, or choose an outdoor backdrop for industries like real estate or creative roles.
3. WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER
A DIY headshot might save a buck, but it won’t capture your best self. A skilled photographer knows how to use lighting, angles, and direction to highlight your strengths. In my studio, I offer expert posing guidance and real-time image reviews to ensure you love the results.
• Tip: Look for a photographer with a full-service experience—think hair, makeup, and retouching.
Watching my clients transform from unsure to radiating confidence is what excites me most— helping them reconnect with their strength and celebrate their individuality through photography.

4. PERFECT EXPRESSION FOR YOUR HEADSHOT
Your headshot is more than an image— it’s how you connect with clients and peers. The right expression strikes a balance between confidence and warmth, making you approachable yet authoritative. A subtle smile often works well for most industries, while a composed, neutral look can suit high-stakes fields like law, medicine, or finance.
• Tip: Relax your face and practice a few expressions before your session—I’ll coach you to find the one that feels natural and fits your brand. A polished expression can make all the difference, whether you’re targeting clients in Monmouth County, Jersey City, or beyond. Let’s capture one that reflects the real you.
5. UPDATE YOUR HEADSHOT REGULARLY FOR NJ’S FAST-PACED MARKET
New Jersey’s professional scene moves fast—don’t let an outdated headshot hold you back. Refresh your photo every 1-2 years, or after major changes (new job, rebrand, haircut!). A current headshot signals you’re active and relevant.
All the photography shared throughout this piece was taken by Kat, at her studio in wall, NJ.

NETWORKING WITHPURPOSE
Turn Key Women was created out of necessity. While attending networking events, the founders, Shannon Fasone and Stacey Donadio, found that the opportunities they sought weren’t materializing. As Shannon shared, “We wanted something different—more intentional and results-driven—so we built it ourselves.”
From the beginning, they knew a women-only event would be special. Women entrepreneurs juggle running businesses, managing households, and caring for families. “We wanted to create a space where women could connect, collaborate, and support one another without distractions or barriers,” said Stacey. Turn Key Women isn’t just networking—it’s building a community of driven women who want to see each other succeed. Shannon and Stacey draw inspiration from the women they work with—their resilience, creativity, and unwavering drive. “Women entrepreneurs wear many hats: business owners, mentors, mothers, and partners,” Shannon explained. “Watching these women navigate their roles with strength fuels our passion for creating a network that supports them.” Each time a meaningful

connection is made at one of their events, it reminds them of why they started Turn Key Women in the first place. “When we see these connections leading to real growth, it reaffirms our mission,” said Stacey.
“Monmouth women understand that success is built on relationships and collaboration,” said Shannon. “Whether launching a startup, scaling a business, or pivoting into something new, women entrepreneurs in Monmouth are fearless and determined.”
Shannon and Stacey love being part of a community that values connection and mutual success. “It’s amazing to see how everyone lifts each other up,” added Stacey.
Their involvement with Move Over Breast Cancer (MOBC) began through Lauren Farrell, one of their passionate members. “Lauren donates a portion of all sales to MOBC, and through her, we learned more about the organization’s mission,” Shannon explained. “After meeting with Paula, we knew we wanted to be involved at a deeper level.” Supporting breast cancer survivors and patients aligns with their goal of giving back and making a real impact on women’s lives. “Giving back is a huge part of our mission, and MOBC allows us to do just that,” said Stacey.
Shannon and Stacey have an exciting lineup of upcoming events:
• June 6th: Trolley Bop Event—a fun networking experience on wheels.
• August 19th: TKW Sunset Cruise aboard the Navesink Queen—an unforgettable evening of networking on the water.
• October 7th: MOBC Event in Avon-bythe-Sea—continuing their support for this incredible organization.
“We can’t wait to bring together more amazing women, create lasting connections, and make a difference in the community!” Shannon and Stacey both agreed.

COMMUNITYFOCUSED BANKING with purpose

MARY ANNE WHITTEMORE
SVP, Commercial Lending Officer at Manasquan Bank
“I began my banking career over 40 years ago as a Credit Analyst after graduating from Mount St. Mary’s University. Over time, I progressed as a Commercial Lender at several large banks.
Thirteen years ago, I joined Manasquan Bank, driven by my goal to work for an organization committed to the community and to stay with them until retirement. That goal is on track.
Manasquan Bank stands out for its strong leadership, customer-first approach, and commitment to the local community. Unlike larger institutions, we focus on helping clients find solutions, not saying “no” to financing requests.
I’m proud to be part of a team that supports the community through sponsorships, volunteering, and donations via the Manasquan Bank Charitable Foundation. The bank has played an active role in recovery efforts after Superstorm Sandy and the pandemic.
Living in the same community I work in, I appreciate the personalized service Manasquan Bank offers, from residential lending to mobile banking. Our branches are welcoming, and our employees are dedicated to providing a refreshing banking experience.”
“I am fortunate to have raised my family and live in the community where I work. My family and I embrace the personal service provided by Manasquan Bank. Branches are bright, and welcoming; phone calls are answered; employees are professional and friendly, and online/mobile banking is nimble. I may be biased, but Manasquan Bank offers a very refreshing banking experience”

The Jersey Girl Returns Home
Marilyn Laverty’s journey from New York to Ocean Grove and the home of Jersey Sound

New York was the epicenter of Marilyn Laverty’s life at the start of her career. After graduating from Cornell in 1976, Laverty had a brief foray in the world of journalism at the Ithaca (N.Y.) Journal before joining Columbia Records in 1979 as a publicity assistant. Laverty rose in the ranks at Columbia and decided to form her own company, Shore Fire Media in 1990.

An array of critically acclaimed recording artists, such as Bruce Springsteen, Wynton Marsalis and Elvis Costello, signed on to Shore Fire, which is based in Brooklyn. Laverty was either at her office or at concerts in New York for much of the ‘80s and ‘90s.
While Springsteen and the E Street Band were rehearsing in Asbury Park in 2003, Laverty, who had a summer home in Spring Lake, sought feedback about the area from those in the band and crew. “I did an extensive search and looked at the Atlantic Highlands and Red Bank,” Laverty said. “I needed a place that took all of my belongings from Brooklyn, which is where my main home was.”
Laverty fell in love with Ocean Grove, where she has lived since 2003. “I like the diversity and the downtown area is very walkable,” Laverty said.
“Asbury Park was already legendary but it was not livable in 2003. There was no development yet. Ocean Grove is next door and it’s this cool, funky town.”
Laverty felt accepted. “There is this gentle spirit in Ocean Grove,” Laverty said. “The

Methodist community is one of openness. I love that every nationality is welcome.”
Part of the appeal of Ocean Grove is that it’s next to Asbury Park. “I love the spirit of the restaurants and shop owners in Asbury Park,” Laverty said. “The growth in this city has been tremendous,” Laverty said. “There are such great local restaurants. I love coming in here like we are now.”
“I always felt that having a place at the shore was the ultimate dream,” Laverty said. “After I discovered Spring Lake, I bought a house there in 1998. It was just a summer house. I needed something else and after I looked at so many different places, like Atlantic Highlands and Red Bank, I found Ocean Grove and I love it since there really is no other place like it.”
The founder and CEO of Shore Fire Media remains Springsteen’s only independent publicist 35-years after they united and is often in Brooklyn office but she always returns to Ocean Grove. “It’s just home to me here,” Laverty said.

From Stem To Vase:

TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART
Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings.
As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions
associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.
In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.

Hanging Florals
For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact.
No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.

Florals and Fruit

Flower Frogs
Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.
Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keetp the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.

GEMMA LUZZI Life Coach

design your own path
Gemma Luzzi inspires female entrepreneurs to succeed
ARTICLE BY GEMMA LUZZI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY EKATERINA VACHINO PHOTOGRAPHY
REWRITE SUCCESS ON YOUR TERMS
For years, I followed the traditional success path— ”go to school, get good grades, get a corporate job, climb the ladder, retire, and enjoy life.” But it didn’t feel right. I wasn’t excited about my life. Eventually, I started a pet care business on the side for more freedom. In just three months, I matched my corporate salary and realized I could create something that worked for me. As I grew my business, other women took notice and asked for help.
I loved helping them break free from the limitations they felt. That’s when I decided to become a coach. Now, I run a coaching business helping women “step into their power” and break through invisible ceilings. “Success isn’t about following someone else’s formula—it’s about creating your own.”
I help women build businesses and lives they love, not just follow a prescribed path. Every day, I’m inspired by the opportunity to help women realize they can “design a life they’re excited to wake up to.”
Fear is part of the entrepreneurial journey. It doesn’t go away, but successful entrepreneurs learn to move forward despite it. The difference is in how you handle fear—it shouldn’t stop you.
