LIFESTYLE LETTER
Seasons Greetings from Asbury!
In this issue, we highlight the best of local holiday shopping—from products to experiences. We always try to shop local first, and while it can be tempting to think online shopping is much easier, all of the wonderful vendors and stores featured here have both brick-and-mortar locations locally and online shopping options. And if you’re in doubt, buy a gift card for one of these awesome stores!
Last year, I was lucky enough to be part of a large group of runners from the Max Challenge in Ocean who participated in the Santa Run. It was my first year taking part, and the sense of community, spirit of fun, and goodwill were all around! People walk the course or come out just to cheer, and I was amazed at the number of inventive holiday-themed costumes! I personally made it about a mile before I had to take off my Santa pants (which were falling off). I sat down at a bus stop beside a very nice lady watching the race go by, and I reassured her, as I was taking off the red trousers, that I did indeed have a pair of workout pants underneath! Every year, proceeds from the Santa Run go to Lunch Break, and in this issue, we took some time to learn more about the important work they are doing to combat food insecurity and more.
Wishing you and your family—chosen or otherwise—a very happy holiday season.

ASSEMBLE A WARDROBE OF CLASSICS THAT NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE
02
ASSEMBLE A TIMELESS WARDROBE THAT APPEARS EFFORTLESS.
Whether you are shopping for yourself of a loved one, sticking to classic silhouettes, colors and styles will help you build a capsule wardrobe. To start think: a fitted denim jacket, a white shirt, a wool sweater, jeans, trench coat, a pair of heels and a pair of sneakers. “The key is to pick pieces that will remain stylish and relevant across seasons and trends,” Brenda Darcy, owner of Darcy Park.
QUALITY OVER QUANTITY IS A PHRASE THAT NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE IN THE WORLD OF FASHION.
Timeless wardrobes focus on high-quality materials and craftsmanship. Opt for durability, enduring style and versatility. “Well-made items tend to last longer and maintain their appearance, making them a worthwhile investment,” shared Brenda. This leather jacket from Mauritius, $248, available in store, is Made of 100% vegetable tanned and ethically produced lambskin leather. The seams are gently polished to ensure a distressed effect.
CLASSIC SILHOUETTES ARE AN INSPIRED CHOICE.
Pieces with classic cuts and styles, such as tailored blazers, straight-leg jeans, and A-line dresses, never go out of fashion. These silhouettes flatter a variety of body types and can be dressed up or down. This Twill Trench French Connection Trench, $272, is a classic style you can rely on for seasons to come, with a traditional trench coat silhouette presented in textured twill.

A NEUTRAL COLOR PALETTE DOESN’T JUST WORK FOR THE WALLS INSIDE YOUR HOME.
Neutrals are a versatile foundation for building a wardrobe and can be paired with other colors to create outfits. Classic neutrals include Black, white (and off-whites), gray, beige, brown, and navy; Earthy tones: Camel, taupe, and olive. When choosing neutral colors, it’s best to select ones that flatter your skin tone.
04
VERSATILE PIECES ARE ALWAYS A WISE CHOICE.
“We tend to stock pieces that feel like they can style multiple ways,” Brenda said. Denim is the most versatile item in any wardrobe. “At Darcy Park, we carry classic denim pieces from the brands Kut from Kloth, Liverpool, Dear John and Skies are Blue, and add new styles weekly.”

GET MORE WITH A MINIMALIST APPROACH.
A focus on fewer, essential pieces reduces clutter and allows for easier outfit choices. The minimalist mindset promotes quality over excessive variety, ensuring that every item is purposeful and loved. “But don’t get us wrong, it’s always nice to freshen up your wardrobe with a few fun pieces,” Brenda said.
ASK THE PROFESSIONALS AND SHOP AT TRUSTED LOCAL STORES.
“At Darcy Park, our values extend past fashion,” Brenda shared. “We want to create real relationships with our customers to help them look and feel great!” This ultra versatile Marigold Cashblend Sweater Dress, $268, has a desk-to-dinner ease thanks to its chic silhouette: an oversized turtleneck, cap sleeves, a defined waistband and side slits. Finished in a midi length. Add a belt or wear it on its own. It also pairs well with all styles of boots, heels or even sneakers.
A timeless wardrobe offers enduring style, practicality, and the ability to adapt to changing trends without feeling outdated. Classic styles like what is featured in this article are available now and always at Darcy Park Boutique. Store is located 2100 NJ 35, Sea Girt, New Jersey 08750, www.darcypark.com.

THE ASBURY PARK SANTA 5K RUN RETURNS SATURDAY DECEMBER 7TH AT 10 A.M. FOR ITS 9TH YEAR IN DOWNTOWN ASBURY.
It’s one of our favorite events of the year. It’s just so great to see people out there running for Lunch Break. It raises a significant amount of money that we can use to help sustain our programs. It’s such a fun event!
Over 3,500 runners competed in the event in 2023, and this year will be bigger and better. Before the race, which is organized by Beacon Events, the participants receive their very own Santa suit plus chip timed results, on the closed course on the streets of Asbury Park. The event, which attracts elves, fairies, and even Santa Claus himself, includes multiple afterparties around the boardwalk, including local favorites like The Stone Pony, The Wonder Bar, and Low Dive.
The event brings the entire community together. Last year, Pamela Miller, owner of The Max Challenge, Ocean brought 32 people to the event, and sported custom Santa hats made especially for the occasion. “The Santa Run brings everyone together for the biggest holiday party ever,” Miller said. “Being around everyone in such a festive mood is contagious! Whether you are on the naughty or nice list, it’s a great way to start the season.” What Miller loves most is that there is no pressure. “Runners or walkers…all are welcome!”
This fun event is also for a good cause. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales goes to Lunch Break to help support their mission to provide food, clothing, and fellowship to those in need around the holidays.
Jill Gwydir-Govel, Director of Development at Lunch Break detailed her nonprofit’s mission.
How did Lunch Break get started?
41 years ago, Norma Todd and the founding members of Lunch Break envisioned a compassionate community where members are cared for, nourished in both body and soul. They started by handing out sandwiches. Norma saw a need for food relief in the community. People were hungry. Over the years, it expanded. The mission began with addressing hunger among those struggling to make ends meet, offering immediate assistance while fostering hope for a brighter future.
Who do you serve?
Our primary service areas are Monmouth & Ocean Counties, with some programs crossing county lines. Individuals from other regions are never turned away for basics such as pantry staples, hot meals, and clothing. We went from a 12,000 square foot building to a 24,000 square foot building in the last two years. Every day we prepare approximately 450 meals. We also have our “Your choice” pantry, which provides groceries for families and individuals. We have a life skills program and our family promise program, which is our housing solution, and so many more programs and incentives. Ultimately, what we want to do is end the cycle of poverty, so that folks can be self-sustaining.
How can one help Lunch Break?
Over the last year, the pantry has seen a 70 percent increase in need.
We have multiple ways to get involved. We have a clothing drive, a backpack drive, food drives. You can volunteer your time or donate money, if you can. Monetary donations are greatly appreciated, because we can make a dollar go further, with our wholesale and buyer connections.
Does the Lunch Break staff take part in the Santa Run?
Yes, It’s one of our favorite events of the year. It’s just so great to see people out there running for Lunch Break! It raises a significant amount of money that we can use to help sustain our programs. It’s such a fun event!
The Santa Run sells out every year. Are there other festive ways to support Lunch Break?
Yes. December 21st is our Santa for Lunch Break concert with Brian Kirk at the Count Basie in Red Bank. Tickets are for sale now!
Pictures and the cover photo generous provided by Beacon Events. These pictures as well as merch for the run can be purchased at www.apsantarun.com.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
