With a Grateful Heart

In this season of gratitude, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many people, places, and opportunities that enrich our lives. In a world where everything moves quickly, Thanksgiving encourages us to slow down, embrace the present, and appreciate the people and moments that bring us joy.

This month, I’m especially grateful for the everyday moments that might seem ordinary on the surface, but truly enrich this life: the laughter and time spent with my kids watching them grow into who they are meant to be, the first few cool days mixed with unpredictable late season warmth, sunsets over those foothills, a warm cup of coffee, and the privilege of being part of such a vibrant community here in Arvada.

Our November issue is all about helping you feel your best throughout the upcoming holiday months with tools, inspiration, and local businesses that support your mental health and overall well-being. We are SO lucky to be able to celebrate the people and organizations that make Arvada special and have for many, many years. It is inspiring to hear and see what the owners of local businesses, non profits and people of our community do day in and day out to help our community. We are endlessly thankful for our advertising partners, whose support allows us to bring inspiring stories to your doorstep each month, and for all you readers who make it all worthwhile.

As we prepare for our favorite holiday traditions, let’s take a moment to reflect on what truly brings meaning to our lives. May we find contentment not in possessions or accolades but in the connections we nurture and the good we do for others.

Wishing you and yours a VERY Happy Thanksgiving. We are grateful for YOU!

ROOTED IN SCIENCE, Driven by Heart

Inside Inspired Wellness Center’s Approach to Health and Healing

PHOTOGRAPHY BY RACHEL AUDETTE

When Dr. Jana Royer-Morian reflects on her path into medicine, she still marvels at where life has taken her. “Honestly, I never set out to be an acupuncturist,” she admits with a laugh. “I was a marine biology major at the University of Hawaii, doing shark research. My whole background was science.”

But in 2003, a snowstorm changed everything. Visiting home in Denver, she helped her sister-in-law, who was an acupuncturist, rebuild her clinic after four feet of snow shut the city down. “She said, ‘Why don’t you just go to school for acupuncture and come work for me?’ And I said, ‘Sure.’ Nineteen days later, I started grad school,” Jana recalls. “I had never even had acupuncture before. But once I got into it, I realized how much it could do.”

That decision launched a career that has now spanned nearly two decades. As the owner of  Inspired Wellness Center in Arvada, Jana has built a practice centered on oncology and fertility—two areas she holds close to her heart. “I ended up at a cancer clinic as part of one of my clinical rotations, and it completely shifted my trajectory,” she says. “My sister has been hit pretty hard by cancer, so it was very personal. I saw what acupuncture could do to support people going through traditional cancer treatments. That’s when I knew this was the work I was meant to do.”

Today, oncology remains at the core of her mission. “My job is to take some of the suckiness out of this equation,” Jana explains. “Chemo, radiation, surgery—they’re so hard on the body. I help with things like nausea, bone pain, fatigue, and even the emotional weight of a cancer diagnosis. The goal is to minimize the negative impacts so patients can keep up with their treatment plans and feel as good as possible during and after.”

Her work has brought her into collaboration with some of the country’s most respected cancer centers, including MD Anderson in Houston and Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York. “When I first started, people thought acupuncture was voodoo and magic,” she says. “Now, it’s Western medically accepted. These major hospitals have massive integrative health programs, and I’m a referral source for both. It’s been really amazing to watch that shift.”

Alongside oncology, Jana has become well known for her fertility work. “We can help at every stage—whether someone is just starting to think about pregnancy, managing cycles and hormones, or supporting patients through IUI and IVF,” she says. Stress, she notes, is one of the biggest factors in fertility challenges. “Part of our role is to provide not just treatment, but advocacy, support, and encouragement.”

Her impact is measurable. “We’re at about 1,020 babies now,” she says proudly. “Some of my acupuncture babies are driving themselves to their own appointments. One of them just started high school! I always tell patients I’m like their weird Aunt Jana that they never asked for—but I love being part of their family’s journey.”

While fertility and oncology are the pillars, her practice offers much more—support for pain, insomnia, digestive issues, and stress management, among others. Still, myths about acupuncture persist. “The one that drives me nuts is when people ask if they have to believe in it for it to work,” Jana says. “There’s so much data about how the body responds—chemicals, hormones, circulation, inflammation. Whether you believe in it or not, it’s still doing its job. I even treat newborn babies, and the Denver Zoo now has acupuncturists on staff for animals."

Community has always been a cornerstone for Jana and her clinic. “I grew up in Westminster, and now I get to serve Arvada,” she says. “When I first started here in 2007, it felt like an old boys’ club, but it’s grown so much more progressive. I love being part of this community.”

Inspired Wellness Center is a fully licensed and board-certified clinic offering Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine to Arvada, Westminster, Broomfield & the entire Denver-Metro Area. Call 303-377-1365 or visit www.inspired-wellness.com for more information.

Owner of Inspired Wellness Center, Dr. Jana Royer-Morian
“Life is a team sport, and I feel really lucky to play my part.”
- Dr. Jana  Royer-Morian

Her clinic gives back through programs in schools and local health centers, as well as other creative initiatives. “Being a part of people’s lives in different ways is important to us,” she says. “But what I’m most grateful for is how much support this community has given me in return. We’ve been through a recession and a pandemic together. It really is a team sport.”

That idea of teamwork extends to her own staff. “People sometimes talk about me as the founder, but I would never be here without my team,” Jana emphasizes. “Being a business owner can be isolating. Surrounding yourself with good people, people who are better at some things than you are, makes all the difference. I feel incredibly lucky to have staff who share my core values. They’re the reason we can do what we do.”

At the heart of her message is a simple reminder: health is not something to ignore until it breaks. “I tell people to think of their bodies like a car,” she says. “If you maintain it—change the oil, pay attention to the warning lights—you can avoid the big stuff. Most of us take better care of our cars than our bodies. But energy, sleep, stress—those are the dashboard lights we need to pay attention to. It’s all about maintenance.”

For Jana, inspired health means proactive care, compassion, and connection. “Life is a team sport, and I feel really lucky to play my part.”

NAVIGATING THE HOLIDAYS WITH A Sense of Gratitude

HOW PRIORITIZING MENTAL HEALTH FOSTERS HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS AND GRATITUDE

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE PARNELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RACHEL AUDETTE
Grayson Braddy and Rebekah Turner of Mind & Body Healthcare

With the arrival of the holidays, calendars fill up quickly with special activities, family gatherings, and fun times with friends. It is a season of thanksgiving and joy, but when dealing with depression and anxiety, it can be difficult to focus on the positives.

“If you're not in a good place mentally, it spills over into your physical health, relationships, job, environment, and how you interact with others,” says Rebekah Turner, dual Board-Certified Psychiatric and Family Nurse Practitioner with Mind and Body HealthCare. “By having good mental health care, people are able to have the capacity to connect with their friends and loved ones, appreciate each other, and have a sense of gratitude.”

Being mentally healthy allows people to help and enjoy time with others while also prioritizing self-care throughout the holidays. “Having good mental health helps you find that balance between having healthy engagements with friends, family, and all the events that come with the holidays without overextending and then creating a lot of stress,” explains Rebekah. “It also helps you set boundaries knowing that you can say no, and then at the same time, not trying to isolate. It is finding that balance between having healthy relationships with people and a healthy relationship with yourself so that you can enjoy the holidays and not be so stressed.”

For people feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or depressed heading into the holidays, help is available. Mind and Body HealthCare has an experienced team of medical professionals who want to help. “Sometimes it's just a matter of getting started and getting that appointment made,” Rebekah encourages. “We can talk about things that are bothering you, areas that need improvement, and how we can work together to create a solid plan that is going to help.”

With certifications in both family and mental health medicine, Rebekah uses a variety of assessments and screenings to get to the root of the issues. “Whether it's anxiety, depression, ADHD, or whatever it may be, we can create a treatment plan that may or may not include medication,” she explains. “Then, we use other methods such as positive thought reframing and positive affirmations, as well as learning grounding and deep breathing techniques that help. We also explore if you need to set boundaries with people and how to have healthy boundaries.”

incorporates modalities for mental, physical, and hormone health and helps patients understand how it all works together.

“Doing things that are healthy for our body is also going to be healthy for our minds. So we focus on finding time during the day to practice mindfulness, fit in exercise or walks, and establish good sleep hygiene to ensure we are well rested,” she says. “We want to take that holistic approach and make sure that we're addressing physical things, mental things, and lifestyle choices. All those things work together for a healthy life and overall well-being.”

“By having good mental health care, people are able to have the capacity to connect with their friends and loved ones, appreciate each other, and have a sense of gratitude.”

Whether it is during the holidays or throughout the year, the goal is finding the best strategies to improve patients’ mental and physical health and helping them move from simply surviving to a life that is balanced and thriving. Overall well-being provides the freedom to enjoy time celebrating the holidays, create lasting memories with loved ones, and end each day with a sense of fulfillment and gratitude.

An aspect of mental health that many people overlook is the connection to physical health, including the fluctuation of hormones. By taking a holistic approach to healthcare, Rebekah

Tips on meal prepping for less stress

Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful.

Between grocery shopping, house cleaning, cooking and baking, it’s no wonder the day devoted to giving thanks can feel a tad daunting.

Here’s some very welcome good news: whether this is your first holiday hosting rodeo or you’ve stuffed many a turkey over the years, you can knock out most of the Thanksgiving meal prep work in advance – some of it two weeks before the big day.

To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.

2 WEEKS BEFORE

Create Your Thanksgiving Menu

• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will be much easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark or scrolling when your hands are covered with flour or onions.

• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.

• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand – even the ones you are pretty sure you have enough of, like salt and pepper (this tip comes from personal experience!).

• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.

• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.

4-5 DAYS BEFORE

Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh Groceries

• Clean your home completely, enlisting family members to help. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.

• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.

• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating. This will free up valuable real estate for your various dishes.

2-3 DAYS BEFORE

Prep Meals & Set the Table

• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.

• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go (and if they will all fit!) Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free until Thursday. You can also do this for a buffet.

• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.

• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.

1 DAY BEFORE

Tidy, Prepare Dishes & Drinks

• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum and shine up the bathrooms.

• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough. Wrap the dough in plastic and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble and bake the pies.

• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.

• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!

• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.

ARVADA RENT-ALLS

Over 60 Years of Community Involvement with Gratitude

For over sixty years, Arvada Rent-Alls has been an integral part of the community, providing professional grade specialty equipment for businesses and individuals to reinvest in the community through building and improvement projects.

During this season of reflection and thanksgiving, owner Andrew Heesacker shares gratitude for the Arvada community and the legacy passed to him through Arvada Rent-Alls. “My dad started with the company in 1971 and then became the owner in 1986, so I was really born and raised around the business,” says Andrew. “I’ve officially been part of the business since 2013 and have seen changes in both the community and the business over the years. As society moves forward and we see businesses close and buildings get demolished, it has been a privilege to continue to be a staple of the community.”

CONTINUED >

Andrew knows that the company’s success rests on the shoulders of loyal customers, the hard work of his team members, and the backing of the community. “I'm very thankful for our customers who have supported us through the years. When I work in operations, it gives me an opportunity to see a lot of people who have been coming into the store since I was a kid,” he shares. “I’m grateful for the Greater Arvada Chamber of Commerce as well. It is so valuable to the community, whether it's helping us navigate when COVID happened or general business issues, it has always been important to us.”

For Andrew and his father, giving back to the community through volunteer opportunities, donations, and partnerships has always been a key part of their business philosophy. “My father and I, and really the business as a whole, have always been very community minded,” says Andrew. “We're thankful for our partnerships, whether it's our vendors or nonprofits throughout the community, that allow us to give back.”

Community involvement takes on different forms for Andrew and the team at Arvada Rent-Alls. It looks like sponsoring a little league team, participating in career fairs for Jefferson County, and being part of various events and activities in Arvada. It also takes the form of food, toy, or coat drives. Arvada Rent-Alls often offers

Owner Andrew Heesacker

discounts on rentals when customers bring in items to donate, which motivates residents and employees to join the cause.

Ultimately, the goal is to stay consistent with community involvement as well as building and maintaining relationships in the community. “Three to four times a year, we partner with others to do a toy or food drive, golf tournament, or other type of fundraiser and it’s really wonderful to see the community come together for those,” shares Andrew. “In September, we helped complete a project for our industry association. It was a project to beautify an underprivileged neighborhood in Denver. We also volunteer with an organization called Food for Thought, which has been really powerful. The organization packs meals for school kids to give them on Friday because a lot of times, they don't have anything to eat over the weekend.”

During this holiday season, Andrew encourages the community to get involved by giving back. “You can donate to a food, toy, or coat drive - like the one we will be hosting for Hope Connection Community,” adds Andrew. “Whether it’s partnering with us or with other businesses or local organizations, there are a lot of opportunities to get involved over the next few months to help the community.”

Arvada Rent-Alls provides professional grade equipment rental for contractors and regular homeowners and is one of the largest suppliers of STIHL equipment in the region. For more information on products and services, stop by 10675 Ralston Road, visit www.arvadarentalls.com , or call 303-422-1212.

H O P E

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.
