Everyday Heroes, Lifelong Impact

Welcome to the June issue of Arvada Lifestyle Magazine! We hope you enjoy this month’s annual Men’s issue as we highlight some classic guy content and some really great dudes in our Arvada community.

Along those lines, one of the obvious staples of this month is Father’s Day. As a father of two, here are some thoughts for my fellow dads out there. Let’s never underestimate the impact we have on our kids! So much of the time we might feel as though our everyday words and provision are overlooked. Our kids will naturally have a different level of emotional intelligence or maturity to recognize the importance of the structure we provide. But it’s a longterm play- a foundation of support and stability that cannot be quantified. One day they may recognize it and show appreciation. Maybe they never will. None of us are perfect- I certainly am not- but the more we pour in raises the level of opportunity for our children to develop as talented and unique members of society. Strive every day to be and become the best version of yourself. Demonstrate growth, because directly or indirectly you’re inspiring them to do the same!

I also want to acknowledge that not everyone is fortunate enough to have that solid father figure in their life, or the opportunity to be a father. We live in a broken world, with such a mix of tragic loss, unexplained absence, and complicated dynamics that don’t align with the ideal images our society promotes. But like anything, we have an opportunity to focus on what is there over what may be missing. Whether you had a model father or something less, I challenge you to become the best man that you can be and build up the brotherhood of men around you. We’ll all be better for it!

Finally, to all the dads out there, let us be the first to say – Happy Father’s Day! You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as this Arvada community. And to my own Dad- thanks for your unwavering support in the most practical and understated ways. I appreciate you so much!

WHAT DRIVES YOU OR KEEPS YOU GROUNDED?

What keeps me grounded is my commitment to daily discipline. Meditation provides clarity and focus, while the gym strengthens my resilience. Prioritizing my mental and physical well-being allows me to show up fully for my family, my career, and those who rely on me.

WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE OR A LIFE LESSON YOU LIVE BY?

A guiding principle I live by is that reputation is everything. Integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. Trust is built through consistency, honesty, and accountability. A strong reputation lasts a lifetime, and I strive to uphold mine by making choices that align with my values every single day.

Sam Manges

WHAT DRIVES YOU OR KEEPS YOU GROUNDED?

Without a doubt it’s my family! They are the one thing that always can bring me back to center even on the worst days. Also, I enjoy riding our local mountain bike trails, fly fishing some of the best rivers in the country, golfing and volunteering whenever possible. Lastly, I would say that my continued education around all aspects of the industry I’m in helps me stay focused and aware.

WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE OR A LIFE LESSON YOU LIVE BY?

Be Kind and Never Stop Trying!  I strive to live every day in a way that can help someone else live a better life, whether that is making a difference in the community through volunteer work, coaching the next generation of tradesmen and women for a better future or just the happiness I see in my customers when we complete a job. We never stop trying to excel in what we do and who we are because the moment we think we are at the top; is the day we step off the peak.

Dr. Jim Roles

WHAT DRIVES YOU OR KEEPS YOU GROUNDED?

With 37 years of chiropractic experience, I help children thrive, especially those with sensory challenges, such as ADHD, ASD, and anxiety. As a child, I used art to cope with undiagnosed learning struggles. That insight, discovered in graduate school, became the spark behind my mission: to help kids unlock their full neurological potential. Chiropractic care, when approached through the nervous system, can restore function and transform lives. It’s not just about backs — it’s about brains, behavior, and brighter futures.

WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE OR A LIFE LESSON YOU LIVE BY?

We are wonderfully created. Nature gave us three core responsibilities: Eat well. Move well. Think well. It all starts with a healthy spine and nervous system. When the spine is healthy, everything works better, often in ways you’d never expect.

WHAT DRIVES YOU OR KEEPS YOU GROUNDED?

What drives me is the commitment to serve our Denver community with integrity, quality, and personalized care. For over 25 years, I’ve taken pride in helping homeowners improve their homes with windows, siding, and doors—always striving to exceed expectations. At New Windows for America, we listen, we follow through, and we stand by our word with satisfaction guarantees. Doing the right thing, every time, is what keeps me grounded and has earned us the trust of countless families. That’s the standard I’ve built this business on—and it’s what continues to guide us every day.

WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE OR A LIFE LESSON YOU LIVE BY?

The best advice I live by is: “Do the right thing, even when no one’s watching.” As a small business owner and part of a family-run company, I’ve built New Windows for America on integrity, quality, and trust. For over 25 years, we’ve earned Denver’s trust by delivering on our promises, treating every customer with respect, and doing the job right—no shortcuts. Whether it’s staying late to finish a project or making sure a homeowner feels heard, we show up every day with honesty and heart. That’s the foundation of our success—and how we’ll continue to serve our community.

John Hess

WHAT DRIVES YOU OR KEEPS YOU GROUNDED?

My family keeps me grounded while also inspiring me to strive for more. They are my motivation.  We started our business from the ground up and that was not easy. That keeps me humble.

WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE OR A LIFE LESSON YOU LIVE BY?

Lead by example and focus on making a difference. We don’t just complete a job and move on; we build lasting relationships. I always tell our clients, “Long after the storm, we’re still here.”  True impact comes from taking action—supporting causes, uplifting people with fewer opportunities, and staying engaged in the community. My advice? Stay active, keep your eyes open, and ask, who needs help? Whether it’s a school needing volunteers, a fundraiser seeking sponsors, or a community project in need, step up—or connect the right people who can.

WHAT DRIVES YOU OR KEEPS YOU GROUNDED?

What drives me is the desire to build and create quality homes. But I know that being a builder isn’t the most important thing. Family and enjoying the moments that make life meaningful always come first. Work has its place, and I give it my best, but it’s second to the people I love and the life we’re building together. That perspective keeps me grounded.

WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE OR A LIFE LESSON YOU LIVE BY?

A lesson I have learned is that the most successful projects are the ones that have a good group of people working together as a team. When building or renovating a home there are several people involved, builder, owner, architect, engineers, subcontractors, and craftsman. If you can get everyone working together toward a similar goal, then the project can have the best outcome.

Andrew Heesacker

WHAT DRIVES YOU OR KEEPS YOU GROUNDED?

I am driven by big goals and healthy competition. I’ve spent nearly 20 years in the equipment rental industry—thriving even against national giants. Personally, I’m a husband, dad of two girls, and goal-setter in all aspects of life—whether business, finances, or fun. Success now means making an impact while enjoying the journey with my family.

WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE OR A LIFE LESSON YOU LIVE BY?

I would say two of my favorite life lessons or pieces of advice are learning how to lead people without being their boss, enabling me to philosophically look at the art of leadership. I also am a fan of just simply “getting my no” – whether it’s sales or any opportunity really. Ask for the opportunity and the worst someone can do is say no.

MEET J. RYAN STEVENSON

DIRECTOR OF VIBRANT COMMUNITY AND NEIGHBORHOODS

As the Director of Vibrant Community and Neighborhoods for the City of Arvada, Ryan Stevenson brings more than two decades of experience to a role that is as dynamic as the city itself. With over 100 parks, two golf courses, a nature center, and a robust calendar of events under his oversight, Stevenson’s leadership is rooted in a core belief: community comes first.

“The people of Arvada are just incredible,” Stevenson says. “I’ve moved around a lot in my career, but there’s something about this place that makes me want to put down roots. Arvada really has it all—urban, suburban, and rural energy all in one city. That’s rare. It’s a community that feels both welcoming and forward-thinking, which makes my work here even more meaningful."

Stevenson’s role isn’t just about keeping lawns green or playgrounds safe. His vision centers around two key principles: public safety and sustainability. From planting and replanting the city’s forest to reduce heat impact to emphasizing natural shading and zero-waste events, his team works behind the scenes to keep Arvada’s outdoor spaces both functional and environmentally conscious.

“We’re always asking: how do we stay sustainable and connected?” he explains. “Whether it’s reducing paper waste at city events or designing parks with ecoconscious materials, we think about the long-term health of our community.”

Stevenson’s strategic thinking extends beyond sustainability. With a background in both urban and suburban park systems, and specialties in urban forestry and parks accreditation, he’s focused on using Arvada’s funding wisely. “We have an aging park system. Every single line item in the budget matters,” he says. “Our goal is to ensure every dollar is spent in a way that strengthens the community.”

Communication is another pillar of Stevenson’s approach. He works closely with Arvada’s Parks Advisory Commission, homeowners’ associations, and neighborhood leaders to keep a pulse on what residents need. “We really value those community voices,” he says. “We show up to meetings, we take calls, we make sure people feel heard. Our website also plays a huge role in keeping folks informed.”

exists. “Redevelopment of some of our older parks is a big priority for me as well,” he adds.

What makes all of this possible, Stevenson insists, is his team. “I have biologists, foresters, natural resource specialists, finance experts—all these incredibly talented people who help keep everything running,” he says. “I wouldn’t even mention them if it weren’t true. They’re what drew me to this job in the first place.”

“I’ve moved around alot in my career, but there’s something about Arvada that makes me want to put down roots.”

One of the highlights on the horizon is Gold Strike Park, a revitalization project slated for Arvada’s southeast side. “That part of town hasn’t seen a lot of newness in recent years,” Stevenson says. “This is a chance to bring fresh energy and accessibility to that area.”

Yet it’s not just about building new—it’s also about breathing life back into what already

Since stepping into his role in October, Stevenson has almost experienced a full cycle of Arvada’s seasonal events. “There’s a rhythm to it all. You learn quickly that in the first six months; you adjust what needs adjusting. Then you start putting your own intentional stamp on things.”

At the top of his to-do list: reviewing and updating Arvada’s Park Master Plan. “That plan is like a bible for any park system,” he says. “We’ll be taking a close look at it later this year to make sure it reflects where we’re headed.”

For Stevenson, every new trail, nature walk, and neighborhood gathering is a reminder of why he does what he does. “I’m grateful every day,” he says. “This job is about more than parks. It’s about people—and the connections we build when we care about where we live.”

SCOTT STALLINGS’ WORKOUT

Like many impressionable kids with giddy enthusiasm for their favorite sport, Scott Stallings discovered his interest for golf at the young age of 3.

But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors.

Upon realizing “that Woods wasn’t that much older than him,’’ Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best.

He trained his way through achieving allstate golfer and Dean’s List status in high school. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer.

In 2016 he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete.

THE PRO GOLFER’S FITNESS JOURNEY

With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night.

“I came to the realization that it was no one’s fault but my own. The excuses and finger pointing led back to me, and once you take ownership, you take power in that,” Scott says.

“The voice within gave me some scary realizations that I always hated the doctor, and that they would tell me something was wrong. I learned a little information goes a long way, and that saved my health. Make one change today, and make another one tomorrow, and you’ll never look back.”

Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed.

“You only get one body,” he says.

Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life.

He still was driven to be one the best PGA Tour players and the best family guy he could be, and he would do all of the discovery, the surgeries, and the daily changes all over again to continue living his best life.

“I legitimately have some great people push me and stay around me,” Scott says.

Scott has traveled the world over, playing on some of the best courses around, from Augusta National twice, to courses across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the hope to cross the Middle East and more stunning destinations in New Zealand off his global travel list. His next “bucket list” trip?

Today, Scott happily shares healthy time with his wife and kids and is leading up The Scott Stallings Kids Play Free Junior Golf Initiative, a partnership with the Tennessee Golf Foundation to bring free junior golf to the Knoxville area.

THE WORKOUT BASICS :

KETTLEBELLS

Cast iron or cast steel ball with a handle attached to the top; ideal for exercises that combine cardio, strength and flexibility training.

BARS AND WEIGHTS

A long iron bar on which weight plates are placed. Weights come in a variety of styles, including weight plates, barbells and dumbbells.

DUMBBELLS

Short barbells, usually held in each hand

MEDICINE BALLS

Weighted balls roughly the diameter of the shoulders that are used for strength training and rehabilitation

STALLINGS’ PRIMARY EQUIPMENT: HIS TOP EXERCISES:

KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH:

Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing.

KETTLEBELL HALO:

Start by holding the kettlebell upside down at chest height, then lift the weight to head height and rotate it around the head like a halo in both directions. This exercise focuses on shoulder mobility— which is important for a good golf swing— and warms up the muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder girdle.

CLEAN TO LUNGE:

First, the kettlebell is lifted from the ground to shoulder height. Then, the foward lunge loads weight into the legs one at a time, which happens from the backswing to the downswing. The exercise increases strength in calves and forearms, which is essential for a powerful swing.

Ideal Age

The best age for wisdom teeth removal is 14-22 to prevent future dental disease.

The Perfect Steak

Nothing describes summer better than a good cookout! And what is a cookout without a good, quality steak and the perfect grilling recipe?

1. Thaw and acclimate the steak. For searing to occur, the proteins in steak need to be heated to at least 310°F. Tossing cold meat onto a hot grill lowers the temperature and can prevent a crust from forming, so it’s important that any frozen steaks are thawed completely before cooking.

2. Salt your steak 30-45 minutes before grilling. This causes the salt to draw moisture from within the steak up to the surface, where it dissolves the salt and creates a brine that gets reabsorbed into the steak where it breaks down tough connective tissues.

3. Oil the grate on the grill, not the steak. Use tongs and a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to lube your grates.

4. Manage your heat well. Remember that your grill needs to be hot for your steak to get a good sear. But if it’s hot enough to cause your oil to smoke, it’s too hot.

5. Use the 60/40 rule. The best-tasting steaks are seared on both sides and cooked evenly in the middle. The simplest way to do that is to only flip your steak once. The 60/40 rule suggests that 60% of your cook time should be spent on one side, and 40% on the other.

6. Keep the lid closed. It may be tempting to peek, but trust the experts and keep it shut! Opening the lid makes your grill lose heat, which makes steaks cook unevenly.

7. Check for doneness. A meat thermometer will give you the most accurate temperature reading:

• Rare: 120°F

• Medium Rare: 130°F

• Medium: 140°F

• Medium Well: 150°F

• Well: 160°F

8. Let your steak rest. Pull your steaks from the grill once they’re cooked to 5-10 degrees below your target temperature and rest for 10-15 minutes.
