Sweater Weather (nearly!)

Hello friends,

It's time to pull your favorite sweaters into rotation, a season of celebration in our house. We embrace every dropped degree, breathing deeper now that the oppressive southern heat is waning. I was in northern Michigan in July and northeast Washington in August and people there were so dramatic about a few 90-degree days. As of August 1 (when I'm writing this), there have been 39 days already this year where the high temperature has reached at least 90 degrees Fahrenheit in Atlanta. Mercy me!

So yes, we get a little excited about pulling out the cool(er) weather gear. They may sit untouched for a while longer, but at least there's hope.

Enjoy our Style and Design issue where we celebrate cutting-edge design (Vino View, page 28), step inside a designer's closet (Following Angela, page 24) and gear up for game day (On Point, page 38).

We hope you're inspired to embrace beautiful design in your own life today and always.

Following ANGELA

As Chief Brand Officer at Chiarabella, Angela Cassisi guides the brand’s design direction across cabinetry, bath and interiors. She is originally from Italy and has been based in Atlanta for just over a year. These are the items she reaches for constantly. They’re not aspirational, "they’re practical, expressive, and rooted in the rhythm of how I move through my day, whether I’m traveling, reviewing materials or hosting clients," says Angela. "Each piece reflects the value I place on design that works without over-explaining itself. While my picks echo the modern taste I apply at work, they’re entirely personal."

They’re well made, thoughtful in function and adaptable to different parts of her workday such as studio time, design meetings, travel, sourcing or evenings out. Each one speaks quietly but clearly to the kind of design that lasts.

Angela shares her picks for the BuckHaven style issue!

MANGO PRINTED SCARVES

I use scarves as punctuation. Sometimes around the neck, but more often tied to a bag handle or packed flat in a carry-on. They add structure to simple looks and let me shift tone, whether playful, directional or understated, without packing a second outfit.

CRAFTS AND LOVE SELENA STUD EARRINGS

These are part of my daily uniform. Made in Atlanta. Clean, small and subtle, but they catch the light enough to feel finished. I’ve worn them in every setting from job site walk-throughs to meetings and gallery openings. They belong without needing to announce themselves.

BANANA REPUBLIC STRIPED TOP

For many of us raised in Europe, a striped shirt is a default. I prefer them cut clean, slightly structured and always easy to layer. They work when the day starts early and ends late, and they help anchor whatever else I’ve thrown on in between.

PINKO SILK MAXI SKIRT (LABELS RESALE BOUTIQUE, ATLANTA)

I shop at Labels often to add unexpected pieces to a neutral wardrobe. A statement skirt like this brings individuality to structured tops and reliable basics. It makes the outfit feel intentional without needing much else and I like knowing it came from a local spot I genuinely love.

POSITIVELY LUXE GOLD PURSE HOOK

This lives clipped to the inside of my bag. It folds out when needed at lunch, airports or site meetings and disappears when it’s not. Small details like this change how you move through the day. Quietly functional and better than letting your bag hit the floor.

ATLANTIC BLUE CANVAS MAHJONG SUNGLASS CASE

I carry this for both sunglasses and reading glasses. It’s beautifully made and the Mahjong pattern adds just the right amount of personality. Functional but with presence. It’s one of those objects that people always ask about when I pull it out, which says a lot for something that’s technically a case.

Find Angela at The Chiarabella Gallery, 668 Miami Cir NE.

IT TAKES a village

Each year, over 250,000 children in our country enter the child welfare system and face life without a safe, loving family. The pattern of family breakdown often leaves children trapped in a cycle of anxiety, fear and a sense of being unwanted. As they age out of foster care, many face an increased risk of homelessness, unemployment, incarceration, unplanned pregnancy and human trafficking.

Since its founding by Johns Creek residents in 2009, Promise686 has learned that the most effective way to care for vulnerable children is by equipping local churches. Churches represent the largest and most reliable nationwide network of individuals best positioned to support vulnerable children and families.

However, many simply don’t know how to take meaningful action. That’s where Promise686 comes in, by helping churches launch what they call Family Advocacy Ministries (FAMs). Promise makes it simple for them to get involved and make a lasting impact through training, technology and coaching.

Their FAM model is designed to unify churches everywhere, ensuring any church, in any community, can effectively intervene, creating lasting transformation and rewriting the stories of those stuck in an overburdened child welfare system.

SHOW OFF YOUR WINE COLLECTION WITH A WELL-DESIGNED CELLAR

A business grows and prospers when it listens to customers, plans for the future and embraces technology in their industry. When Dan Shaunnessy, president and owner of Window Traditions, and his team recently researched a new product for the expanding company, they discovered an opportunity they could sink their teeth into.

Designing and installing windows and doors for new construction and for replacement and renovations, Window Traditions now offers custom wine cellars. These “wine walls” may be nestled into existing architectural nooks or expand across entire walls of a dining room or kitchen.

“People usually want slim profiles and the most important feature is that they are thermally controlled or “Thermally Broken,” explains Dan. “The designers can choose between thermally broken and non thermally broken frames as well as multiple different patina finishes.”  The designs complement modern farmhouses, traditional colonials, sprawling estates and more modest townhomes. Arches, angles and existing furnishings are taken into consideration, along with the homeowners’ personal style and lifestyle requirements.

Window Traditions was founded 22 years ago, now with three locations in Johns Creek, Lake Oconee and Nashville TN. “Johns Creek was originally chosen by the previous owners due to its development and location,” says Dan. “The community is supportive of businesses like ours and the talent pool is deep, which has allowed us to find the best and most skilled team members for our design, administrative and installation crews.”

Window Traditions serves the Southeast area with a heritage of quality that dates back to 1990. “Because we strive to be the best at what we do, we ensure integrity and excellence permeate every aspect of our operations,” promises Dan.

The company provides a full spectrum of services – from trustworthy knowledge and education through product sales, installation and beyond as a complete provider of choice for commercial contractors, homeowners and builders/remodelers.

As a privately held business, our employees are empowered to resolve any problem on-site.   Their broad expertise and years of experience are unmatched in the Atlanta area. The team takes pride in understanding which products to recommend for your project and your budget, and they have experience with many different challenges and approaches to projects.

A BOATHOUSE ON A QUIET COVE OFFERS PRIVACY AND CONVENIENCE.

Lake Burton’s Charm

With  2,800 acres and 62 miles of shoreline, Lake Burton is a favorite for long days out on the boat, paddling along the winding shore, and sunset happy hours with friends. Located in Rabun County in northern Georgia, Lake Burton is the northernmost in a series of five lakes that comprise the Tallulah River Watershed. It is one of the first lakes in the United States to be created for power generation in 1920.

Today, families gather on and off the water to make new lake house memories. The north Georgia location means Tallulah Gorge State Park is nearby, with its hiking trails and epic steps along the dramatic 1,000-foot gorge and waterfall. Easy access to the  Appalachian Trail skirts main roads and offers day trips with stunning views and a variety of challenges. Charming downtown Clayton with galleries and a nice variety of restaurants and shops is nearby for shopping and groceries.

Back at the lake, nearby LaPrade’s Marina and Restaurant serves up beachy meals, cocktails and music. Easy access out to the lake near the dam and Billy Goat Island and a beautiful spot to anchor for the Fourth of July fireworks display, right outside the cove. You can spend hours fishing for trout, skiing or just relaxing on one of the least busy lakes in Georgia. The homes in these coves are coveted, some owned by generations of families who return year after year.

In one of these quiet coves sits a newly renovated home that recently was listed for sale that includes a private dock with an upper deck for sunbathing and naps, picnic lunches and the happiest of hours. Just off the main lake this setting offers swimming off the deck in a safe and beautiful setting. The boat house also includes two boat slips, perfect for launching your boat or jet skis.

Inside the home,  there is a newly renovated kitchen/ family room area and three bedrooms, three baths, and 3,400 square feet of newly updated living space with pine hardwood floors throughout and a wall of soaring windows overlooking Lake Burton and the woods. There are two bedrooms on the main level, with a spacious upper level with plenty of room for two queen beds, a sofa, easy chair, and TV for movies and gaming.

To complete this tranquil setting there is a corner screened porch and long upper deck with a hot tub that overlooks the lake.

One of the most unique features of this home is that unlike most on Lake Burton this property is a “Fee Simple lot” meaning you own the property, it is not a Georgia Power lease lot. You can rent this home as an investment and take advantage of the new 100 percent select depreciation tax law, saving several hundred thousand dollars in the purchase. Owner financing is available at 5 percent.

The lake awaits!

The Forth Designed to Welcome

A surprising find, The Forth Hotel is as moody as it is bright. Was I in the lobby of an exclusive hotel in Milan, Barcelona or another modern European city, now popular with discerning travelers? The front desk staff wear suits and are formal but warm and I feel seen.

The Forth Hotel

Deep velvet and leather sofas flank a wood fire blazing in the lobby, and the terrace suite has its own outdoor wood-burning fireplace, rarities in Atlanta hotels.

With a killer location, just steps from the BeltLine in Old Fourth Ward, The Forth hotel’s gorgeous rooms, sprawling fitness club, Insta-worthy outdoor pool deck and rooftop lounge, and variety of restaurants will win you over during your next in town staycation.

Food first. Get yourself a reservation at Il Premio for an Italian steakhouse dinner, Moonlight for a big city nightcap and Elektra for pool-side brunch. No need to leave the property, except to walk, run, scooter or bike the BeltLine to drink in Atlanta’s diversity and energy.

Hotel guests enjoy access to The Forth Fitness Club, a membership-only gym. During my stay, I checked out the key for the cold plunge, a private room where I could dip into the deep tub of water where the thermometer struggled to reach 50. A timer, bluetooth

speaker, dim lighting and privacy door hanger should have given me confidence. They did not, for more than 60 long seconds.

The Forth Hotel will be your in town Atlanta womb. From the Sferra robes in the rooms to the warm smiles and service from the wait staff at Elektra, your day will be full of promise.

THE GLORIES OF

Camping at Under Canvas

Our first night at Under Canvas North Yellowstone, a gentle rain turned into a ferocious storm, blowing gusts of wind across the Paradise Valley right down the flue of the tiny but mighty wood-burning stove in our tent. We unzipped the heavy duty canvas door and window flaps for a few minutes, stoked the fire and crawled back under the down duvet of the king bed to listen to the drama outside. We felt completely safe and cozy in the sturdy safari-inspired tent, designed by the founders of Under Canvas, now with 13 locations, all near national parks.

The next morning after a hot shower (each tent has a bathroom stocked with organic bath products), I wandered down to the Yellowstone River just outside our tent, where a fly angler was already casting into the clear water.

Up at the expansive lobby tent, furnished with West Elm classics, hot breakfast was being served (healthy, hearty and really delicious) and guests were chatting about the day’s plans. The historic lively town of Livingston, Wyoming is an easy 20 minute drive and the entrance to Yellowstone National Park is an hour south. Stop at Chico Hot Springs for a long soak and lunch and watch for elk, moose, wolves and grizzly bears along the way. The Paradise Valley, aptly named, offers glorious views of the Absaroka Beartooth Mountains and Gallatin Range, ranging in elevation from 4,500 to 10,921 (at Emigrant Peak).

One morning (we visited in September), we woke to find the season’s first snow on the peaks of the mountains. From the deck of our tent, coffee in hand, I watched the clouds part revealing the bright white peaks. The staff was nonchalant while guests excitedly peered through the lobby telescope searching for wildlife amongst the snowy ridges. Each Under Canvas lobby tent is stocked with books on local history, games, gear, merch and snacks. While tents have USB battery packs to power the lamps, you’ll find outlets (if you must) in the lobby. The experience encourages you to live your best “Out of Africa” life, without the inconveniences of camping.

Two new camps are opening this summer at Yosemite (80 acres among towering California Black Oak and Ponderosa Pines) and the Columbia River Gorge (120 acres in the White Salmon River Valley). Mini kids tents are adorable and adjacent to mom and dad’s and the Stargazer tent offers a skylight above the bed for the ultimate sweet dreams.

A stay at Under Canvas feeds the need for the wild.

Considering Cryptocurrencies?

You’re Retired or Nearing Retirement and Wondering if Bitcoin or Other Cryptocurrencies Are for You?

In an age where headlines buzz with stories of Bitcoin millionaires and digital currency breakthroughs, it’s natural to wonder: Should retirees or those nearing retirement consider cryptocurrencies as part of their financial strategy?

As a seasoned wealth advisor with 26 years of experience and managing partner of BlueChip Wealth Advisors, I’ve seen firsthand how the investment landscape evolves—and how crucial it is to navigate it carefully. Cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin, have generated massive attention due to their meteoric rise (and fall) in value. This volatility is precisely why they pose both an opportunity and a risk—especially for retirees whose investment time horizons and risk tolerance differ significantly from younger investors.

For retirees, the primary objective is often capital preservation and generating a steady income stream. Cryptocurrencies, however, are notoriously volatile. In 2021 alone, Bitcoin lost nearly half its value in just a few months, only to recover and then decline again. Such fluctuations could be unsettling for those dependent on their investments for living expenses.

However, dismissing cryptocurrencies altogether might mean missing out on potential growth. The key lies in strategic asset allocation and your own personal

risk tolerance. If you’re considering dipping your toes into digital assets, do so with a conservative approach. Limiting cryptocurrency exposure to a small percentage—typically no more than 3% of your total portfolio—can provide growth potential without jeopardizing your retirement nest egg.

Moreover, it’s essential to view cryptocurrency as a speculative investment rather than a reliable income source. Unlike dividend-paying stocks or interest-bearing bonds, Bitcoin and other digital currencies do not generate passive income. Any gains come solely from price appreciation, which is unpredictable.

At BlueChip Wealth Advisors, we prioritize investment objectives that align with your long-term goals and risk tolerance. Our approach involves a thorough discovery process and continuous monitoring of the opportunities and threats on the financial landscape. If you’re curious about cryptocurrencies or want to explore how they could fit into your retirement plan, it’s vital to proceed with

caution and informed guidance. I always recommend working with a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), one who can work on a fee basis and truly understands your personal risk tolerance and withdrawal needs. If the firm has updated its software deck, it should include a modern-day digital risk tolerance questionnaire.  This will help the advisor and yourself determine if the asset class is appropriate for your situation.

The world of digital currencies is exciting but fraught with risk. For affluent retirees, the question isn’t just about potential rewards—it’s about preserving the lifestyle and legacy you’ve worked so hard to build.

With a more crypto-friendly, SEC commissioner it’s likely we could see more cryptocurrency-tracking ETFs approved and launched

over the next year. For the more tech savvy retirees there is also platforms like Coinbase and even some payment platforms like Paypal who have allowed their customers to buy certain cryptocurrencies.

As with most investments along the efficient frontier, the potential of greater capital appreciation comes with greater additional risk. For those already retired or nearing retirement, I recommend consulting your advisor and keeping this asset class to 3 percent or less of your overall portfolio.

OLD WALL, NEW TRICKS

HANG UP THE OLD WAY AND TRY A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM IN YOUR HOME.

One of my happy places is sitting in front of a museum wall gallery. I can admire art for hours, and if I’m with a friend, there’s no telling how long we’ll sit, reflect, and share our individual perspectives. If you’ve admired gallery wall displays in magazines, catalogs, or on social media and would like to create one in your home, it’s much easier than you might think.

DESIGNING YOUR GALLERY WALL

The first step in creating a gallery wall is planning. Start by selecting a theme or color scheme that complements your space. Themes can be as varied as black-and-white photographs, abstract paintings, or a mix of personal and artistic prints.

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED:

• A gallery wall hanging system, which typically includes mounting rails, cables or rods, and hooks. You can find them pretty much anywhere, online or at your local home improvement store.

• A collection of frames and artwork.

• A level, measuring tape, and perhaps a laser pointer for precision.

CREATIVE ARRANGEMENTS

• The arrangement of your gallery wall can follow several patterns, depending on your taste:

• Linear: Artworks are hung in a straight line at eye level, creating a clean and orderly appearance.

• Grid: Perfect for a collection of similarly sized frames, this layout emphasizes structure and uniformity.

• Salon Style: This more traditional arrangement involves layering pieces closely together, often extending across the wall. It’s ideal for creating a rich, filled look.

INSTALLATION TIPS:

01 MEASURE YOUR SPACE:

Carefully measure the wall space where you want to install the gallery. Consider the height and width available, keeping in mind furniture and other room features.

02 LAY IT OUT:

Arrange your artwork on the floor to finalize your layout. This “dry run” is crucial to get a feel for how the pieces will interact with one another. I like to use painter’s tape to create a visual of what my display will look like on the walls.

03 INSTALL THE RAILS AND HANG YOUR ART:

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mount the rails at the top of your wall. Ensure they are level and securely attached. Attach cables or rods to the rails, then use hooks to hang your frames. The beauty of the system is that you can adjust the height and position easily.

04 BALANCE AND SYMMETRY:

Step back to view your layout from different angles. Adjust the spacing and alignment as needed to achieve visual balance.
