HOW A COMMUNITY OF MOTHERS TURNED GRIEF INTO HOPE

Finding the Warrior Within

We are not going to fix a mom’s grief, but we can show you that you can have joy again. That you will smile again.

Here in north Atlanta, a group of mothers united by the unimaginable—losing a child—are transforming their pain into connection and generosity, most recently through a healing retreat that drew mothers from across the country.

Their journey began quietly: just a handful of mothers meeting in north Atlanta to share the one thing no parent ever imagines—the loss of a child. Some had lost infants, others teenagers or young adults. The causes varied—illness, accidents, overdoses, suicide—but the ache was the same. In each other, they found what the outside world couldn’t always offer: understanding, compassion and the reassurance that grief could be carried, even if it never went away.

Building on these gatherings, a movement now known as Warrior Moms—a network that reaches far beyond Georgia—grew. Their book, Warrior Moms: Stories of Strength and Survival , brings together 14 founding members who each tell their story of loss and what has helped them cope. The honesty is raw, but each chapter closes with hard-won wisdom.

The impact of their openness doesn’t end with the book. That candor carries into the Warrior Moms podcast, hosted by two members, Amy Durham and Michele Davis. Amy, one of the original Warrior Moms, lost her son, Alec, to addiction. She recalls, “Nobody gets it. Their lives are still going on. We are an island. But now I live with as much joy as I can because of this community of women.” Through conversations about milestones, triggers and glimpses of joy, the podcast has built a lifeline for parents across the country who may feel isolated in their grief.

Their desire to help others is taking shape with a gathering in Eatonton, Georgia. Fifty newly bereaved mothers gathered for the inaugural Warrior Moms

retreat, “Finding the Warrior Within.” Held at Briarpatch Farms and made possible by local farmers Mike and Cathy Rainey—along with meals, lodging and support donated by families, churches and businesses—the retreat was a testament to grassroots generosity. Moms from across the country came together not just to mourn, but to create community through small group discussions, creative expression and moments of remembrance.

One of the most anticipated moments was a deeply symbolic tradition: each mother walked a red carpet and wrapped in a blanket embroidered with her child’s name, a gesture of strength and remembrance. Amy shared, “I couldn’t get through this without this group of women. Today is a good day. I am good. Some days, though, I am not good.”

Organizers hoped the retreat’s impact will endure long after it ends. Each woman received a “support pod,” access to psychologists and tools to carry forward. Just as important are the friendships forged in shared heartbreak and shared survival.

Yet, the retreat is only the beginning of what Warrior Moms aim to accomplish. Building on their experience, they are already planning a mini-retreat in Texas for 2026, targeting families affected by floods. “The goal is to create many pods of warriors all over the country,” Amy says.

“We are not going to fix a mom’s grief, but we can show you that you can have joy again. That you will smile again. Yes, you will miss them every single day of your life, but it’s okay to do things without them.”

Warrior Moms stand as living testimony that while the love for a child never fades, neither does the possibility of finding joy again—together.

Students driving change

Students at Fulton Science Academy are proud to make volunteering and service a priority. Here are three student-driven initiaves that keep kids thinking, creating and giving back.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY — TANZANIA SERVICE PROJECT

Fulton Science Academy’s National Honor Society students devoted months of planning and volunteer hours to a global service project in Tanzania. They raised $17,500 to fund five water wells, directly improving access to clean water for entire communities. Students also traveled to Tanzania to join and help dedicate two of the large well-opening ceremonies, experiencing first-hand the impact of their work. In addition, they donated $2,000 to a local orphanage, visited with the children and spent a half day volunteering on site while presenting shirts and sweatshirts. The project required evenings, weekends and sustained commitment, but gave students an unforgettable opportunity to serve others in meaningful ways. Faculty advisors Mrs. Cetinkaya and Mr. Akel guided and mentored students throughout the process.

ASTRONOMY SOCIETY — VOLUNTEER OUTREACH THROUGH STEM

Over the past three years, Fulton Science Academy’s Astronomy Society has devoted thousands of volunteer hours to designing and building a custom telescope, conducting high-altitude balloon experiments and prototyping a CubeSat. Equally important, they have made community outreach a cornerstone of their mission. Students regularly organize star parties, public demonstrations and school-wide workshops to spark curiosity and share their passion for space. Through summer and year-round astronomy and small satellite camps, the team not only inspires younger students with the wonders of the universe but also pays it forward by training the next generation of scientists and engineers—nurturing a lasting culture of curiosity, research and exploration. This volunteer-driven spirit has drawn many in the community into astronomy. While under the guidance of faculty mentor Dr. Adams, students have learned to balance ambitious engineering goals with a deep commitment to service and mentorship.

ROCKETRY TEAM — VOLUNTEERING TIME TO INSPIRE AND COMPETE

Fulton Science Academy’s Rocketry Team, invited to nationals as the only team representing Georgia, dedicates countless volunteer hours after school, on weekends and even during breaks to perfecting their rockets. Much of their work is hands-on: students design and fabricate custom components with 3D printers rather than relying on pre-made parts. Their commitment extends far beyond competition— team members regularly volunteer to lead demos, workshops and

summer and weekend camps that train the next generation of rocket engineers and scientists. They also raise funds to support charity initiatives and outreach programs for students in need. Guided by faculty mentor Dr. Adams, the team embodies both engineering excellence and a spirit of service, investing their time and skills to uplift the community.

Answering Prayers

Muffled cries from new parents are barely audible over the loud, beeping noises that come from a sea of lifesaving machines. In normal situations, these repetitive sounds may be a source of frustration, but in this case, it’s a reassuring sign that a premature baby is still alive and fighting. This is life in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Designed with utmost precision, these carefully controlled environments are designed to mimic a mother’s womb, but with life-support and monitoring technology that is staffed by some of the most highly trained nurses in their field. While overwhelming to many, the layout and features of a NICU are all created to promote healing and development for fragile newborns, all of whom are born well before their due date and often with myriad medical hurdles to clear.

But what about the parents who find themselves thrust into a birth story that never mirrored their fairytale expectations? Who and what resources are available to provide critical support to those terrified families who spend countless

hours worrying and waiting for their babies to become healthy enough to come home?

These inspiring families are the impetus behind “Little Miracle Baskets.” Created by Alpharetta resident Brooke Bowman (age 18), this volunteer outreach initiative has helped to provide care kits to nearly 125 families who find themselves watching, waiting and worrying about their preemies. Hours spent in the NICU bleed into days, and days sometimes bleed into months while new parents anxiously await updates from medical staff about the health progress of their little miracles.

An aspiring NICU nurse, Brooke spent much of her junior year of high school visiting and shadowing NICU nurses at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, as well as multiple campuses for Northside and Emory Hospitals. Inspired and impressed by the medical resources available to help preemies and micro-preemies and reassured by the level of competence and compassion demonstrated by NICU nurses, Brooke’s attention shifted to one

IG: @littlemiraclebaskets

group who clearly needed and deserved a little extra TLC…the families who now called a NICU their home.

“Every time I would visit a hospital and meet a family whose preemie was fighting to get healthy, I was incredibly moved. Their anxiety was real and completely understandable. Long runways of empty time allow scary and worrisome thoughts to creep into parents’ minds. They felt worried and powerless. When I hugged them, I felt their pain. I knew I wanted to help, and I set out to do just that.”

And, so, Little Miracle Baskets was born. In January 2025, Brooke made her vision a reality, creating a brand-specific logo, a fundraising page and talking points to share her mission. With the help of a friend from her church group, Brooke raised more than $4,000 from generous donors (many of whom are also Alpharetta residents) and used this money to purchase supplies to fill care kits.

“I spoke with various NICU nurses and families to identify what types of items would be most supportive during this challenging time. Answers varied by hospital, so we tailored the contents of each basket to meet the requests of each hospital.”

“I spoke with various NICU nurses and families to identify what types of items would be most supportive during this challenging time.”

Some kits contained crossword puzzles or books, others had coloring books and crayons for adults and children, inspirational quotes, snacks, hand-knit preemie caps and empty journals that encouraged moms and dads to articulate their feelings in writing.

“It meant so much to have a chance to meet some of the families in person. Some deliveries were met with tears; others, with smiles, but everyone expressed tremendous gratitude because the baskets gave them something positive to focus upon in a very stressful time.”

H O P E

Begins with YOU

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

“The Mama Bears” of Cambridge

It was a balmy evening in September 2024 when nearly 1,000 Alpharetta citizens made history by packing out a newly created parade route in conjunction with Cambridge High School’s Inaugural Homecoming Parade and JamBEARee.

The brainchild of a handful of Cambridge moms who volunteered their time, talent and treasure, the JamBEARee aimed to build community and start an annual tradition that would be a highlight for not only current students, but alumni, future bears and the city of Alpharetta. Cambridge, the newest of three high schools in the area, was the first to build such an event.

“A group of moms were chatting at a JV football practice last summer to see if we could create some new events that we enjoyed when we were in high school, but that had not yet been instituted here,” says planning committee member Jamie Powell. “One idea that resonated was the creation of a parade to kick off homecoming week. Many of us fondly remembered our own homecoming parades as teens, so it only made sense to try to create something similar here.”

Powell elicited support from other mothers who wanted to join forces. Now affectionately named “The Mama Bears,” each volunteer on the planning committee shared a desire to create an evening that would not only foster excitement about homecoming week among current students and faculty, but would also help to facilitate communication and camaraderie between school groups, clubs, sports, feeder programs and local businesses.

“We initially pitched the idea to our school principal, who was incredibly supportive but warned us in advance that efforts had been made years prior with limited success. We didn’t let this deter our efforts, and only became even more resolute in creating a groundswell of support,” said Mama Bear

Ashley Edmonds,Meghan Smith, Jenn Linn , ShelleyMasse y

and committee member, Shelley Massey, whose son Ford, plays varsity football and whose daughter, Ella, is a freshman at Cambridge.

“In less than a month, we raised nearly $8,000,” says Megan Bowman whose daughter, Sarah, (a junior) is a band leader, and daughter, Brooke, an officer of the school’s “Women in STEM” program. “Much of which came from families and residents to help pay for police presence, signage and festival-type activities.”

Volunteers also had to apply for permits from the city, select which carnival-type activities would be best received, determine food trucks, invite vendors to fill a shopping area and communicate with parade participants, spectators and elected officials.

Stephanie Huffman, a Mama Bear who was instrumental in the planning process and whose son, Luke, plays football at Cambridge, commented, “The most inspiring aspect of this experience for me was seeing how many groups, not only within

Cambridge High School, but also feeder programs, feeder schools and local businesses, all registered to participate in the parade. Watching everyone decorate their floats and the joy they showed while doing it was infectious.”

MI N T HE MAK I N G

Teens and social media, no denying this combination has received a bad rap over the last few years, but not every teenager is succumbing to brain rot on the internet. Meet Maya LaBorde, a senior at Alpharetta High School who is using the internet and social media platforms to create a powerful career planning outlet for teens interested in the medical field.

Medicine in the Making was a solution to a problem Maya discovered as she began exploring career paths. Maya has utilized career training programs at school to work through a Medical Assistant certification program, but unfortunately, there are not a lot of resources available for young people with dreams of pursuing a medical career. She felt that kids need to hear the stories of the medical professionals who have already blazed a path to better understand what it takes to make this ambition a reality.

Medicine in the Making presents podcast episodes and other online resources to showcase real-world health care professionals who are sharing their health care journey to inspire the next generation.

“I realized a lot of people don’t have the same access I do to get these resources and I wanted to bridge that gap,” Maya explains.

With so many different facets to the health care profession, it’s not surprising for teens to quickly feel overwhelmed or confused on how to get started. Hearing first-person interviews with current professionals helps to put this career path into perspective and start collecting ideas on how they can make this a reality.

Maya has interviewed a variety of medical professionals including pediatrician Dr. Angelique Redus-McCoy, who shared in a

podcast episode how she worked through the decision-making process on choosing a major in college, her educational path and specifically how she decided on pediatrics as her specialty.

In addition to hosting and running Medicine in the Making, Maya is also an active member of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) where she participates in a number of activities including mentoring and teaching middle schoolers interested in the medical profession.

So, where does all of this energy and inspiration come from? “Both of my parents were and are still active in the health care field, but especially my dad, who has really inspired me to start the podcast,” Maya shares. “Both my mom and dad really inspire me every day and are a really important part of my journey.” Maya also finds it encouraging and exciting when other students reach out after viewing her content. “I love when students reach out to say 'this is such an amazing thing you’ve started,' so it’s inspiring to hear my generation getting more interested in healthcare.”

What’s in the future for Medicine in the Making? “I hope to grow Medicine in the Making in the future and continue throughout college.” For now, Maya is staying plenty busy with her podcast, website, school, leadership clubs and making time for Friday night frozen yogurt and movies with her friends, because after all, she is still a teenager. No doubt, though, Maya LaBorde is an exceptional teen with an exciting medical future in the making.

You can learn more about Medicine in the Making by visiting medicineinthemaking.com.

SHARING IS CARING

For the past 15 years, Pam Abrahamson of Alpharetta has had the privilege of volunteering with Wellspring Living, whose mission is to transform lives of those at risk or victimized by sexual exploitation. They provide trauma-informed, participant-centered programs at no cost, empowering survivors to heal and discover hope for the future.

Pam's service has included everything from mentoring and cooking breakfast to board leadership and simply listening and celebrating milestones.

"Six years ago, my friend Chris Golen joined me, and together we take participants out once a month—to dinner, movies, picnics and entertainment centers," says Pam. "These nights give them a chance to talk, laugh, share struggles and accomplishments and to be celebrated in their journey."

The most meaningful moments for Pam and Chris, also of Alpharetta, come from watching each young woman enter the program, often feeling lost, unloved and unseen, and then experience healing and transformation through Wellspring Living.

"To see their lives changed and their dreams realized is nothing short of miraculous. They begin to hope again, feel empowered to live the life they were meant for, with dignity and freedom," says Pam.

The staff at Wellspring Living are also everyday heroes, offering counseling, education, housing, medical care, job support and above all, love. Their compassion and dedication make all the difference for the young women who enter their program.

There are many ways to get involved and serve, including mentoring, tutoring, helping at events and various other volunteer opportunities. Wellspring Living relies on a variety of skills and contributions to manage and operate transformative programs.

HONEY

ROASTED CARROTS WITH LABNEH AND FRESH DILL

Hosting Tip: “Ask for help from the right people. Some people aren’t going to be comfortable making bread rolls or a dessert, but maybe they’re great at making salad. Others can be asked to bring drinks or clean afterward. Nobody is a mind-reader—don’t be afraid to set up a spreadsheet where they can sign up!”

Ingredients

• 10 carrots

• ½ cup fresh dill

• 3 sprigs of thyme

Directions

• 1 cup labneh

• 2 tablespoons honey

• 2-3 tablespoons olive oil

1. Preheat oven to 400° F

2. Wash, peel, and prep your carrots. If carrots are skinny, you can peel them and place them onto a cookie sheet. If the carrots are thicker in diameter you can cut them lengthwise into halves.

3. Drizzle honey and olive oil over carrots on baking sheet. Use your hands to make sure the carrots are properly coated on all sides.

4. Add salt and pepper

5. Bake in the oven at 400° F for about 25-30 minutes

6. Take them out of the oven and set aside

7. On a large serving plate add about a cup (or more) of labneh. My favorite is called Luretik.

8. Add your carrots then freshly chopped dill and thyme to the top

9. Drizzle a good olive oil over the whole thing

HONEYNUT SQUASH

Ingredients

• 3 honeynut squash

• olive oil

• salt

• pepper

• smoked paprika

• pomegranates

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400° F

2. Slice the squashes in half, remove all the seeds

3. Add olive oil, salt, and pepper and roast for 30 minutes

4. Add smoked paprika and pomegranates to serve

Hosting tip: “It’s all in the way you present it to kids…when you ask your kids to join, try not to make it sound like a punishment. Emphasize that they have a responsibility prepping really yummy food. Include a special drink for the kids while they’re helping, like spiced apple cider. Adjust your expectations to allow for extra mess, extra time, and know it won’t turn out exactly as if you had done it yourself. But the tradeoff of creating happy memories is 100% worth it.”

CRISPY POTATOES

Ingredients

• 10 small yellow gold potatoes

• 1/2 tablespoon baking soda

• olive oil

• salt

• rosemary, garlic, chives (optional)

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400° F

2. In a large Dutch oven, bring water, baking soda, and salt to a boil. Place unpeeled potatoes into the water and reduce the heat to medium-low. Once the potatoes are soft to touch (20-25 min), drain and let sit for 10 minutes.

3. On a cutting board, grab a potato and use any large object (wine bottle, glass jar) and smash down the potato. Do this gently and have a spatula close by to transfer to a baking dish.

4. Once you have smashed all the potatoes, add salt and olive oil.

5. Place in oven and roast for 20 minutes or until crispy

6. Top with the garlic, rosemary, and fresh chives

Cooking tip: “I don’t peel my potatoes because who really has time for that? The secret to this recipe: baking soda. The baking soda makes the water alkaline which helps break down the surface of the potatoes, making them very crispy and very delicious.”

CARAMEL CHEESECAKE

Ingredients

Crust

• 12 graham crackers

• 6 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 1⁄4 cup brown sugar

Filling

• 4 sticks of cream cheese (room temp)

• 1-1⁄2 cup sugar

• 5 large eggs (room temp)

Directions

Preheat oven to 350° F

Crust

• 2-1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla

• 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

• zest of whole lemon

Caramel

• 1-1⁄4 cup sugar

• 1-1⁄3 cup water

• 1 cup heavy whipping cream

• 1 cup unsalted or salted butter

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. In a food processor, add the graham crackers, butter, and brown sugar. Blend until sand-like texture.

2. In a springform pan, add parchment paper and butter the sides

3. Place crust into the pan and pat down to form a smooth base

4. Set in the fridge and chill for 15 minutes

Filling

1. Add the cream cheese to a standing mixer. Make sure it’s room temperature—this is an important step!

2. With your whisk attachment on medium speed, mix the cream cheese. Once it becomes fluffy, add the sugar and one egg at a time. Scrape down sides as needed.

3. Remove the pan with the crust from the fridge, add the batter to the pan, and place into your preheated oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

4. Remove from the oven and let sit. Once cool, cover and place in the fridge.

Caramel

1. In a saucepan, add the sugar and water. Whisk until the sugar is dissolved. Keep heat on medium. Watch the sugar water—it will slowly go from a light brown to a rich amber color.

2 . Once it turns amber in color, add the heavy whipping cream and butter and whisk

3. Turn the heat off and let sit for 5 minutes

4. Remove cheesecake from the fridge and add the caramel to the top

Tips on meal prepping for less stress

Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful.

Between grocery shopping, house cleaning, cooking and baking, it’s no wonder the day devoted to giving thanks can feel a tad daunting.

Here’s some very welcome good news: whether this is your first holiday hosting rodeo or you’ve stuffed many a turkey over the years, you can knock out most of the Thanksgiving meal prep work in advance – some of it two weeks before the big day.

To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.

2 WEEKS BEFORE

Create Your Thanksgiving Menu

• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will be much easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark or scrolling when your hands are covered with flour or onions.

• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.

• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand – even the ones you are pretty sure you have enough of, like salt and pepper (this tip comes from personal experience!).

• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.

• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.

4-5 DAYS BEFORE

Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh Groceries

• Clean your home completely, enlisting family members to help. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.

• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.

• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating. This will free up valuable real estate for your various dishes.

2-3 DAYS BEFORE

Prep Meals & Set the Table

• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.

• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go (and if they will all fit!) Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free until Thursday. You can also do this for a buffet.

• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.

• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.

1 DAY BEFORE

Tidy, Prepare Dishes & Drinks

• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum and shine up the bathrooms.

• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough. Wrap the dough in plastic and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble and bake the pies.

• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.

• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!

• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.

Turning Compassion into Action

In every thriving corporation and community, there are unsung heroes whose generosity quietly shapes lives. Spearheading fundraising efforts takes vision, strategy and tireless dedication—qualities that define Alpharetta’s Gina Pickett, Regional Event Coordinator at Marsh MMA. Gina continues to mobilize resources, energizing her community and turning passion into impact; transforming ideas into action through collaboration and a compelling call to give.

A valued member of MMA for 13 years, Gina has led the MMA Charity Classic for the past six, benefiting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Having supported the event for years before taking the lead, she has found deep fulfillment uniting colleagues, corporate partners and the broader community for a vital cause. “It touches me profoundly to witness the impact brain tumors have on children and their families,” says Gina. “I’m committed to doing all we can to bring hope and support to families through their unique brain tumor journey.”

Gina’s desire to do good extends far beyond the workplace. Since losing her husband to ALS in 2007, she has been a passionate advocate for ALS awareness—leading Walk to Defeat ALS teams annually and raising over $120,000. For 21 years, she’s supported the Atlanta Hockey Foundation, helping fund scholarships and aid for players. She also serves yearround with Operation Christmas Child, organizing large community packing parties that share Christ’s love through shoebox gifts to children worldwide. Through every effort, Gina remains driven by faith, family and the belief that one person can truly make a difference.
