Georgia Luxury Pools and Southern Landscapes and Designs
For homeowners with a big dream of a built-in pool and only a small side yard to work with, this makeover by Georgia Luxury Pools and Southern Landscapes and Designs elevated the outdoor space to something elegant and fun.
This was a new build from start to finish. The design had a 10’ x 18’ Rectangle “spool” or small dipping pool that is a fully functioning hot tub with jets as well as a plunge pool. The pool has a small tanning ledge, with bubblers and eight therapeutic deck jets. The yard has new decking, a water fountain feature, and enclosed wall with two entry gates that lock with a code, and an outdoor kitchen area. A farm to table garden along with a tree buffer wall create a dreamy setting for entertaining.
David Brown of Georgia Luxury Pools and Patrick Ferguson from Southern Landscapes and Designs, whose seamless partnership has redefined the meaning of backyard environments, collaborated on this project.
“We were able to expand the yard by making the pool self supporting,” notes David. “We gave them a place to entertain friends and family as well as a really nice water feature.”
Southern Landscapes and Designs installed the necessary retaining walls to level usable areas, added landscaping, irrigation, a vegetable garden, outdoor lighting, and a beautiful custom medieval iron doors for entry into pool area. “The homeowner has complete outdoor year round living space for all seasons,” says Patrick.
For another project in Alpharetta, the two worked together to right the wrongs of a previous pool repair and to add more usable space on the top deck. The equipment was upgraded, new LED low voltage pool lights installed and new tile with waterproofing and new pebble add polish to the look. “I love the larger spill over as well as the ledge stone on the wall. It’s a much cleaner look,” says David. They also added an energy efficient pump, and a new automation for easy mobile control of the pool.
Patrick’s team added an irrigation system to the yard and full landscape design, replaced an old retaining wall and the deck, adding a roof, a fireplace and TV for fall football games, and an outdoor kitchen to keep the crew fueled.
David Brown’s journey into the pool industry began at a remarkably young age, influenced by his family’s deep-rooted legacy in the pool business. His early years spent mastering every facet of pool building culminated in over two decades of expertise. In 2022, David left the family pool business and founded Georgia Luxury
Pools to create his vision for a better pool company; driven by a passion for delivering unparalleled customer experiences and crafting award-winning designs.
Patrick’s journey began at Pike Nurseries at age 15, where his love for landscaping blossomed. His career took him across the country, building golf courses before returning home to Georgia. With over three decades of expertise and a penchant for award-winning designs, Patrick founded Southern Landscapes and Designs in 2016.
David and Patrick have worked together for over seven years—and it shows. Their collaboration delivers more than aesthetics; it delivers peace of mind. When homeowners choose this team, they’re getting a full-service transformation, managed by professionals who understand every layer of design and construction.
From solving deep structural issues to selecting the perfect landscape lighting, they work in harmony to bring the homeowner’s vision to life—and then some.
As Alpharetta and Johns Creek continue to flourish, the partnership between Georgia Luxury Pools and Southern Landscapes & Designs sets the gold standard for outdoor living.
“When the reality of the finished product far exceeds your dream. The end result proves to us we engaged with the right team. A huge ‘Thank You’ for turning our outdoor space into our own private oasis,” says happy customers, Ken and Renita Gibson.

In the first quarter of the year, Alpharetta’s Classic Blinds and Shutters welcomed its newest team member, Zack Zare. After years of learning the family business firsthand and earning a degree in business from the University of Alabama, Zack was more than ready to join the team. “Joining the family business means I get to carry forward my parents’ legacy and decades of hard work,” Zack shares. “Being their only child, I feel a deep responsibility to enrich what they’ve built and continue taking care of the past, present, and future Classic family members and partners.”
But for Zack, the transition from business student to businessman wasn’t nearly as daunting as another challenge he was facing.
“My journey with testicular cancer started at the end of my final semester of college,” he recalls. “It was a lengthy process to get diagnosed because my doctors were in Georgia while I was still attending the University of Alabama.” Just months before his graduation, Zack’s entire world shifted.
“Once I was properly diagnosed, everything moved fast, and the emotions were overwhelming,” he says. “I had surgery to remove the source of the cancer less than a week after my diagnosis, and because it was spreading so quickly, I had to start chemotherapy two to three weeks ahead of schedule. Chemo was as grueling and hard as you might imagine—honestly, probably worse than I
expected. But keeping a positive mindset and having such widespread support made it a little easier to get through.”
Much like his approach to business, Zack faced his diagnosis with determination and resilience. Over time, he found ways to expand his perspective, transforming an incredibly difficult chapter into a source of strength and advocacy.
We caught up with Zack to learn more about his journey — and how it has shaped his outlook on life, work, and the future.
HOW HAS GOING THROUGH TESTICULAR CANCER TREATMENT AND RECOVERY SHAPED YOUR OUTLOOK ON LIFE AND WORK?
Going through chemo broke my body down in a way that I wouldn’t wish on anyone, but I try not to look at it as being all bad.
OVER
TRANSFORMING AN INCREDIBLY
I don’t think I will experience anything in life that will compare to how physically and mentally draining that time was, so I know that in the future I can battle through anything I might face. This applies to both personal life and work. Going through an experience like that made me appreciate life much more than I did before, and also taught me how precious and valuable our time is on Earth with our loved ones.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AN ADVO CATE FOR TESTICULAR CANCER AWARENESS?
When I was receiving my second round of chemo on week three of the cycle, I had started to really feel the effects of the medicine breaking down my body. My oncology nurse asked if I would want to speak to a man that was in the infusion center getting fluids after finishing chemo months prior and being cancer free. When I spoke to him, he helped ease my mind a little bit about the doubts I had, and really just showed me that this phase of my life would eventually be over, and things would go back to normal. Once I completed all my chemotherapy, my mom had been reached out to by a worried mother of a 25-year-old in Texas that had just been diagnosed with
the same type of rare cancer I had. From there I started talking to him, answering any questions or concerns he had, telling him what to expect through his journey, and giving him advice I wish I would have known before I started my journey. It felt very rewarding knowing that I could help someone who was in the same situation I was in just a few months earlier.
As if Zack’s story weren’t inspiring enough, he’s also a passionate car enthusiast and avid golfer. “I’ve always had a big
passion for cars because of my dad, and I’ve always been a BMW owner, starting with my first car—a 435i convertible,” he says. “When I was first car shopping, I looked at many brands but ultimately loved how BMWs drove compared to the others.” During college, Zack owned an older-generation M3 and M4, both of which he loved, but after getting rear-ended and having his M4 declared a total loss, he went searching for something new. “I knew I wanted to stick with BMW, so they were my first stop. After driving the new generation M4, I fell in love all over again,” he says. This time, he decided to switch things up. “I had always driven white cars with red interiors, so I thought it would be cool to flip it—red exterior with white interior.”

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s Executive Director Jason Ulseth was shaking hands with visitors at the office, stomping mud off his boots, nodding an unspoken message at his assistant and hopping on a call when I first met him. We spent an hour in the sturdy patrol boat—him sharing startling

statistics about the conservation and ecological health of the Chattahoochee River, its lakes, tributaries and watershed; me hanging on his every word (and the side of the boat), wondering how many people are lucky enough to have jobs that align with their passions, abilities and dreams.
Jason and I met again in a hospital room at Emory Winship Cancer Center. Our friend and his colleague, Becca Sue Klein, was losing her seven-year battle with metastatic breast cancer—a fight she faced relentlessly, supported by the fly fishing community and a dedicated tribe of friends.
A week later, we were assembling bookshelves and fluffing pillows in the in-law apartment at his house where Becca would live temporarily. She was
weakening and Jason, his wife Dawn, Becca’s parents and her care tribe agreed having someone (Jason’s family) upstairs would be a good thing. It was then Jason’s quiet mission to ensure her safety and confidence while anticipating her every need. He accomplished that. And more.
Becca passed away January 21 with her loving parents, Jon and Jennifer, by her side.
A bunch of us gathered to help pack up Becca’s house, treading gingerly and comforting one another through our tears with stories of her powerful abilities to connect people and her unwavering dedication to nature and its allies.
Jason, Dawn, Sydney (16) and Easton (14) Ulseth will forever be angels in my eyes. They also scooped up

Sydney is a rising junior at Centennial High School and she just started her first job working at a movie theater. Her passion is music, with Taylor Swift and Gracie Abrams topping her chart. She is also in the chorus at school.
Easton is a rising freshman at Centennial High School. He loves playing and watching soccer and is earning his referee license. He’s a diehard Liverpool Football Club fan.
This year, Father’s Day falls on Jason’s birthday. There will undoubtedly be good food, a family gathering and talk of fishing.
“Watching Jason as a dad has shown me how deep his patience, strength and resilience truly run. I have seen him overcome challenges with strength and determination, all so that he could be the father that our children deserve,” says Dawn. “He shows our children every day what it means to be kind, strong and full of integrity and has shown them that love is at the heart of a meaningful life.”

If you ' ve admired a standout roof in Johns Creek, Alpharetta, or the surrounding towns, there's a good chance it was installed or restored by a trusted local favorite now known as Capital City Roofing. The name has changed, but the craftsmanship, customer service, and attention to detail remain the same.
While some companies change names due to mergers or ownership changes, for us, it’s a return to our roots. Capital City Roofing is our original name — and it better reflects the pride we take in serving Georgia’s capital region and surrounding areas. Same expert team. Same elite service. Just a name that feels more like home.

When our real estate broker brought us to downtown Alpharetta, it took us about five minutes to decide.
When looking to make a move from Vinings/ Buckhead, it didn’t take Hop On A Cure Treasurer Gregg Vickery and his wife, Janet, long to realize Alpharetta was home.
“We were looking ahead towards retirement and wanted to find the right area for us to enjoy our retirement,” says Vickery. “We looked at a few different communities, but when our real estate broker brought us to downtown Alpharetta, it took us about five minutes to decide we wanted to be part of that community. In addition, it was a little closer to our kids and our house on Lake Lanier. So, the location and atmosphere could not have been any better for us.”
Vickery’s career has always been in finance, working for 19 years at Home Depot before leaving in 2003 to spend time with his growing family. In 2005, he was offered a position to once again work with Home Depot co-founder and Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur M. Blank, this time as Vice President and Controller for Blank’s family of businesses, which included a nonprofit foundation.
“Arthur Blank’s mission was clear to everyone in his organization - to build his wealth so he could pass it along and give back to others in the community through his foundation.”
With that in mind, Vickery - who was still in finance in 2023 when he retired from his position as CFO of the Blank Family of businesses - was introduced to Hop On A Cure co-founders and fellow area natives John and Jennifer Hopkins, who launched the organization in 2022 after John, a founding member of GRAMMY Award-winning group Zac Brown Band, was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disorder ALS.
“Knowing that my work contributed to that mission and the greater good for society had been missing since I retired. My wife and I had talked about finding the right cause to give back to, and when we met John and Jen, we knew we had found it. After meeting them and getting to know them, and understanding more about ALS, it was impossible to not want to help them and others who have this terrible disease.”
Also based in the greater Atlanta area, Hop On A Cure has granted over $4 million in its short existence. Recognizing a critical need for support of all kinds in the ALS community, the foundation’s mission is to support research to prevent, reverse, and cure ALS while raising awareness, build a compassionate community, and unleash the healing power of hope. To date, Hop On A Cure has given grants to research programs at Emory, Houston Methodist Medical Center, Duke University Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as several independent programs, like ALS Cure Project, to name a few.
After the success of last year’s inaugural Harmony for Hope Gala at Trillith Studios, which raised nearly $1.2 million, Hop On A Cure will be hosting another gala this year, again at Trillith Studios - on October 18, 2025. Both Gregg and Janet are on the host committee.
“It’s been over 80 years since Lou Gehrig died from this disease and there is still no cure,” says Vickery. “While progress has been made, there is a clear need for more research and clinical trials. Funding, education and awareness are crucial to accomplishing this and my wife and I are very happy to help in any way we can.”

THE CANNONBALL RUN IS ALIVE AND WELL; SETTING NEW RECORDS WHILE HONORING THE PAST.
American car culture is a vibrant expression of freedom, identity, and innovation. From muscle cars to hot rods, it’s deeply rooted in our nation’s history as well as the individuality of the driver. Enthusiasts gather at car shows and races celebrating performance and design; it’s a lifestyle fueled by passion and horsepower.

“WE LEFT LOWER MANHATTAN AT 8:30 PM AND ARRIVED AT THE PORTOFINO HOTEL, 2876 MILES AWAY, IN 36 HOURS AND 11 MINUTES.”
The Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, famously known as the Cannonball Run, is a daring, unsanctioned race that starts at New York’s Redball Garage in lower Manhattan and finishes at the iconic Los Angeles Portofino Hotel in Santa Monica. The race had no rules other than safety first and arriving as quickly as possible. The infamous Cannonball Run, wasn’t just about speed—it was about spirit, rebellion, and the thrill of the open road.
Conceived by automotive journalist Brock Yates, the run was both a protest against government regulation and a
celebration of speed, skill, and nerve. Today, classic car collectors are breathing new life into that legacy, merging vintage style with raw performance. As these beautifully restored machines roar across the country, they do more than chase records—they honor the past, celebrate American craftsmanship, and prove that true automotive passion never goes out of style.
Alpharetta auto collector Greg Ellner has had a love of cars since he was a small child. “My passion for cars began with my father, Jerry Ellner - it was how we
connected,” says Greg, “we went to races, shows, and cruise nights. The Indy 500 was our Superbowl, an all-day tradition.”
“The car we ran in our first Cannonball, my 1978 Corvette, needed extensive preparation,” says Greg, “we basically replaced almost everything in the engine compartment.”
Right seater to Greg’s driving is his partner Danielle Crawley. “We pack the car with multiple tablets so we can run a variety of traffic and GPS applications,” says Danielle, “those, along with a very good radar detector, were our ‘countermeasures’ against achieving a ‘spirited driving award’ from any law enforcement we encountered along the way.”
”We left lower Manhattan at 8:30 pm and arrived at the Portofino Hotel, 2876 miles away, in 36 hours and 11 minutes,” says Greg proudly; “a cannonball is physically and mentally exhausting. It is a test of endurance. I assume it’s the same drive and will power that cause people to climb mountains and run marathons.”
“We are planning on other races,” says Ellner. One of the only rules of The Cannonball Run is that you can only talk about your own experience after the fact; oh and you cannot name names other than yours and you cannot discuss upcoming events. It really is secret driving club.

Stepping into Cork & Glass Wine Shop feels like embarking on a journey through the world’s finest wine regions. Where else can you experience the bold flavors of Argentina, the rolling hills of California’s San Jose, and the timeless charm of Italy, all within the warm atmosphere of a family-owned gem?
The shop was founded by Jose “Pepe” Fundora, who was raised in the hospitality industry. His parents, Maria and the late Antonio Fundora, owned and managed restaurants, including the beloved Casa Nuova Italian Restaurant in Alpharetta.
Initially, Pepe wanted to explore other industries outside his upbringing, but fate had different plans for him. After attaining his Electrical Engineering Degree from Georgia Tech and spending a few years in corporate America, Pepe found himself impacted by a lay-off and once again joined the family business. He cultivated a distinct talent and keen ability for making patrons feel like one of the family.
His passion was ignited after a trip to California’s wine country during harvest
season with his parents, where he connected with winemakers and was soon inspired to become a certified sommelier. “For a lot of my peers, a specific bottle is their aha moment. For me, it was an aha experience .”
Pepe opened Cork & Glass in 2020 next door to Casa Nuova, with the vision of offering high-quality wines at an exceptional value while educating customers about wine and food pairings.
“This slogan, making wine accessible, actually came from one of our guests,” Pepe shares. “I want people who are novices to experts and everyone in between to have the same exposure to fantastic wine.”
The shop offers a range of services, including wine and beer sales, wine tastings, classes, wine dinners, and a robust wine club membership with tiers set to meet any budget.
Pepe splits his time and duties between both Cork & Glass and Casa Nuova, blending his expertise in hospitality and wine to create memorable experiences for his customers.
For a lot of my peers, a specific bottle is their aha bottle. For me, it was an aha experience. “

Student Leadership Johns Creek (SLJC) celebrated a significant milestone on Wednesday, April 16, at Innovation Academy, graduating its final class of 108 student leaders before transitioning to a new regional identity as Student Leadership NORTH.
After 13 successful years of cultivating young leaders in the Johns Creek community, the program has evolved to extend its reach across the northern region. The final SLJC graduation ceremony marked the culmination of a legacy that began with just 25 students in its inaugural class and grew to impact hundreds of future leaders.
Former Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker, who presided over the program’s first graduation, returned to lead the final ceremony under the Johns Creek name, bringing the program’s journey full circle. Fulton County School Board President Kristin McCabe addressed the graduates, highlighting the exceptional opportunities the program has provided to students over the years.
Throughout its history, the two-year leadership program has facilitated over 60 community service projects primarily benefiting Johns Creek residents. The program’s success is evident in the impressive achievements of its alumni:
• 17% of SLJC graduates have attended Ivy League schools
• 93% have attended top 50 colleges nationwide
• 100% have attended top 100 colleges
The career trajectories of SLJC alumni further demonstrate the program’s influence:
• 84 graduates currently work in technology, including positions at industry leaders like Disney, Meta, and Google
• 44 have pursued careers in medicine
• 36 serve in law and government
• 30 have entered the finance sector
• 25 work with prominent consulting firms including McKinsey and EY
• 19 have launched careers in fashion, sports, and media
The program has also produced two Fulbright Scholars, two Stamps Scholars, several Rhodes Scholars, and numerous entrepreneurs and the alumni contributions continue to grow each year.
A highlight of this year’s ceremony was the presentation of the inaugural Homer Rice Perseverance Award, established in memory of the legendary Georgia Tech football coach and athletic director who passed away in 2024. Aryun Singh from Northview High School received this honor for his dedication to seeing his team complete their community service project despite numerous obstacles. Sophie Lin from Chattahoochee High School was awarded the Michael E.
Bodker Leadership Award, while Esha Sajjan from Johns Creek High School received the Marilyn Margolis Leadership Award.
“While we’re concluding the SLJC chapter, we’re excited about the broader impact Student Leadership NORTH will have,” said Executive Director Irene Sanders. “The 202526 academic year will mark two exciting developments: welcoming Alpharetta High School to our program and launching our inaugural one-year Rising Leaders program.”
The expansion to include Alpharetta High School represents a significant step in the organization’s transition from a city-focused initiative to a regional leadership development program.
Student Leadership Johns Creek extends its deepest gratitude to Emory Johns Creek Hospital, which has served as the program’s major sponsor since its inception 13 years ago. The program also acknowledges the generous financial support from Renasant Bank, VyStar Credit Union, The Rotary Club of Johns Creek, The Rotary Club of Johns Creek-North Fulton, The Baaga Family, Arthur and Erin Holst, Robyn Kanner Grant, Chris and Erin Jackson and Shafiq Javadji. Their contributions have been instrumental in the program’s sustained success and growth.

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.
A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.
SOMETHING SWEET
This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.
SOMETHING TANGY
Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.
SOMETHING SPICY
This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.
SOMETHING LIQUID
It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.
SOMETHING TOMATO
You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.
THE SPICE COMBINATION
This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.
• 2 cups ketchup
• 1 cup water
• 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
• 5 tablespoons brown sugar
• 5 tablespoons sugar
• 1/2 tablespoon black pepper
• 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
• 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.
