What does "home" really mean?

Since our theme for March is "Home", I wanted to take some time and reflect on what it means to me, and maybe many of you as well.

Home is a complex tapestry of emotions, memories, and a sense of belonging that transcends its physical structure. Beyond the bricks and mortar, home is a sanctuary where one finds solace, acceptance, and unconditional love. It is the place where we shed societal masks, revealing our true selves without judgment or pretense.

Home is a repository of shared experiences, a backdrop to the milestones of life — from the joyous celebrations to the quiet moments of introspection. It encapsulates the laughter echoing through its walls, the aroma of familiar meals, and the comfort of a familiar bed at the end of a long day. It's the canvas upon which the story of a family or an individual unfolds, a living testament to growth, resilience, and the passage of time.

Oh, please…for many of us, home is a bustling hub of activity and constant demands. It may appear as chaos to an outsider, but it's a chaos that we cherish, hold dear, and welcome with open arms. In this domestic whirlwind, we navigate through many daily decisions, juggling personal and professional deadlines. Home is the epicenter where we orchestrate our lives, managing work commitments, grocery runs, errands, and playing the role of personal Ubers for our kids.

Amidst this organized chaos, the challenge is maintaining our sanity while addressing the many tasks pulling us in different directions. It's common to glance at the unwashed dishes from last night's dinner, the stack of clothes awaiting laundering, or the neglected mail on the counter. And now, with the increasing number of people working from home, our domestic space has seamlessly transformed into our professional domain, adding another layer to our already dynamic households.

In this shared space, our pets have become familiar faces to our colleagues, who unexpectedly appear during virtual meetings. Attempts to hush them often lead to introductions, and suddenly, our furry friends are on a first-name basis with our professional peers.

As the day concludes, home is where we collapse into bed, thoroughly exhausted from the day's accomplishments, hoping that tonight won't be the night our minds decide to replay the unfinished tasks, robbing us of much-needed sleep. Despite the challenges, we wouldn't trade any of it – because amidst the chaos, there lies a unique and irreplaceable sense of belonging and fulfillment.

Discover a New World at The Inn of The Five Graces

TRAVEL JOURNAL | TRAVEL

A stylish sanctuary Ira and Sylvia Seret

In the middle of Santa Fe lies a small, exquisite inn called the Inn of The Five Graces. Hand-carved wooden furniture, intricate patterned tilework, and bold tapestries create a sophisticated setting as guests reach the interior and prepare for their stay.

Sales Manager Maria Perez De La Parra says, “It’s an oasis in the middle of town. You forget you are in Santa Fe.” The adobe inn has eclectic furniture, tapestry, and tilework throughout the property. The luxury hotel has pieces from Tibet, India, and other exports from the Silk Road. The owners, Ira and Sylvia Seret chose the property in Santa Fe to create their 27-room hotel. “It’s timeless. It’s in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the U.S. in an over 400-year-old building,” says Perez De La Parra.

Ira initially worked in fashion and interior design and is known for bringing Asian aesthetic style to the Western world. He was a buyer and designer for Oscar de la Renta, Anne Klein, and Bloomingdales. Sylvia created her designs with handicraft workers and artisans from Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Asia. Then, in 1974, Sylvia moved to Kabul to join Ira, and they opened a carpet factory.

After meeting in Afghanistan, the two artists traveled the world, hand-selecting pieces with deep meaning and artistic flair. In the mid-80s, the couple moved to “the city different” - Santa Fe. The couple’s first venture was a furniture and home décor store, Seret and Sons. The showroom was a unique way to bring the Serets’ treasured collection to the West. The store on Galisteo Road in Santa Fe is now a family-owned business with the Serets’ three sons working with them. The store offers furniture, tapestry, and custom upholstered options with diverse patterns and prints. Antique Tibetan trunks, embroidered textiles, wood-carved mirrors, and hand-painted cabinets are just a few of the shop’s offerings.

The Serets opened The Inn of The Five Graces in 1996. It was the perfect way to share and showcase their designs. The hotel is named “Inn of The Five Graces” because of an Eastern philosophy.

TRAVEL JOURNAL | TRAVEL
14

The philosophy is that we are all graced with five different senses to experience the world. The inn indulges guests’ sight, touch, smell, taste, and hearing. Perez De La Parra says, “The decorations, patterns, colors, and textures transport you to a new world that mixes countries and cultures.” She ensures the hotel’s unmatched hospitality makes a guest’s stay memorable and worthwhile.

Each of the 27 hotel rooms is decorated with time and patience like an artist’s masterpiece. Sylvia designs the time-consuming tilework for each room. Every room is purposely unique so guests can return and immerse themselves in new surroundings that feel foreign but familiar each time. Perez De La Parra says, “The owners dedicate a lot of love in their design and attention to each room. It feels as if you’re staying in a piece of artwork.” The popular “luminaria villa” has a cozy, intimate setting. The villa has a kitchen and three rooms with fireplaces to add to the ambiance.

The luxury hotel provides a complimentary breakfast for all guests that can be enjoyed on the outdoor patio, in the breakfast salon, or as room service. Locals can enjoy a 30 percent room rate discount and a 15 percent spa and retail discount. Guests can enjoy complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic drinks from the mini bar. A fitness room, valet parking, and a 24-hour concierge are also available at the property. Private historic walking tours of Santa Fe are another perk when staying at the inn.

The hotel has received many accolades, including being named Travel and Leisure magazine’s “Top City Hotel in the U.S.” in 2021. The magazine also ranked the inn number 66 of “Top Hotels in the World.” Conde Nast, Forbes, and Trip Advisor have also honored the hotel over the years for their service, design, and accommodations.

“It’s timeless. It’s in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the U.S. in an over 400-year-old building.”
- Perez De La Parra.

Guests at the inn can relax and indulge at the Tibetan-inspired spa on site. The spa opened in 2019 and is one of the few spas to offer the Augustinus Bader facial. The facial was created by Bader, a stem cell researcher and expert in regenerative medicine. Another popular treatment at the spa is the Five Graces Signature Massage. The spa’s steam room is also available for guests in half-hour sessions.

Travelers can easily access Santa Fe’s famous museums, stores, and restaurants outside the hotel. Within walking distance from the Inn of the Five Graces is the Pink Adobe Restaurant and Dragon Room Bar. Sylvia and Ira Seret purchased the bar and restaurant at the end of 2022. The couple agreed to keep the restaurant’s original offerings from the well-known owner and artist, Rosalea Murphy. The Dragon Room Bar serves taco flights, margaritas, and tequila-chocolate churros.

The Pink Adobe menu includes grilled salmon, red mole pork tenderloin, and fire-roasted chile rellenos. The Santa Fe hotspot has been open since 1944 and is popular with tourists and residents. Many famous guests like Georgia O’Keeffe and Robert Redford have also frequented the restaurant.

Energy efficient design and building

We asked J. Dave Hickman, owner of Jeebs and Zuzu, an Albuquerque architecture and construction firm, about the origin of his company name. He told us, “Jeebs and Zuzu are typical names of butlers and domestic servants in stories and films, and we endeavor to provide old-world, attentive service to our clients.”

Dave’s slogan for the company, “Easy as pie…have the life you want,” reflects their commitment to bringing client’s dream homes to fruition.

Jeebs and Zuzu is a full-service residential design and build firm that provides the complete package: consultation to develop plans, renderings, a firm budget, and construction that will carry out the client’s wishes for their new home. They also perform renovations of kitchens, bathrooms, and cabinetry, as well as the design and build-out of home additions.

J. Dave Hickman, owner of Jeebs and Zuzu

Dave told us, “What’s unique about our company is that everyone is trained in architecture, including the construction managers. This ensures that the new home is structurally compliant and according to plan. We bring architecturally trained people into the residential market.”

Along with their experienced staff, the company employs young architectural students who are just getting their degrees, helping them learn about client service, concepts, budgeting, building codes, materials, and solving problems, encouraging youthful creativity and preparing the next generation of architects.

In addition to residential design and building, Jeebs and Zuzu designs commercial buildings and multi-family projects with post-construction options like occupancy assistance, selecting and purchasing furnishings, maintenance plans, and lease, sublease, or sale of the property.

One of the areas that Jeebs and Zuzu has considerable expertise in is green technology and energy-efficient design. Dave said, “There are a lot of new regulations and codes relating to energy efficiency that the customer needs to be aware of. Ultimately, these changes will save the homeowner money on heating and cooling. Also, New Mexico has a lot of opportunity for solar since we have about 300 days of sun in a year.”

The company can also provide a documented residential maintenance plan schedule, adding to the resale value of the home.

Jeebs and Zuzu is located at Suite C, 11030 Menaul Boulevard NE, Albuquerque 87112. Their phone number is 505.797.1318, and their website is https://jeebsandzuzu.com/index.html.

Jhett Black

“A DARK CANVAS WITH A SPLASH OF LIGHT”

MUST SEE | ENTERTAINMENT
22

For many years at the beginning of his career, Jhett Black traveled the road playing folk-rock music. While playing gigs for Gleewood and living out of his Honda, the musician taught himself to play slide guitar. As his lyrics express, “He was born down on the Pecos where the water meets the desert sand.” Originally from Ruidoso, he grew up listening to his sister’s punk rock albums. One day, he discovered Led Zeppelin, and “they were the gateway into blues” for him.

Once blues music found him, it took hold of him and never let him go. Jhett Schiavone became “Jhett Black,” an award-winning songwriter and blues musician. He tried to change his prominent bass-baritone voice when he was younger. He says, “I tried to match my voice to the higher-pitched popular singers at the time. I finally yielded to what my voice had to offer.”

Jhett describes his music as Southern Gothic Blues, Murder Ballads, and Gospel Blues. He says, “I pull a lot on the Delta blues inspiration with the slide guitar sound and simple cut-and-shoot rhythms.” He credits the Hebrew Psalms as his biggest inspiration. In the Psalms, he finds pain, hope, struggle, and victory. You can also hear that juxtaposition in his music. His albums include gritty songs like “Devil Ain’t An Only Child” and heartfelt songs like “For Mom,” a tribute to his mother. His audiences also enjoy foot-tapping tunes like “Pecos Kid.”

In 2022, Jhett was selected for The International Blues Challenge, an annual event that showcases the best blues musicians worldwide. Jhett won 2nd place in the solo/ duo blues category. His final performance was at the historic Orpheum Theatre in Memphis. He says, “That was a super surprising and incredible experience to share those stages with so much talent from around the world.”  His self-produced album  Roots remained on the Roots Music Report Blues Charts for over twenty weeks and landed at #1 for four consecutive weeks. Shortly after his Orpheum performance, Blues Radio picked up the album internationally.

Jhett has toured locally and worldwide, but deep down, he’s still a proud New Mexican, and his music proves it. Lyrics from songs like “Pecos Kid” tell his audience, “… his woman was raised on green chile.” His wife, Callie, has

been his musical muse and co-creator. He says, “I wrote my first song the day I met her. She has been a part of the process in some way ever since.” Jhett also credits his musician friends, the Doso Dirtbags, for teaching him most of his guitar chords.

During the pandemic, Jhett and Callie ended up in Nashville and had to remain there until the lockdown ended. Jhett says, “The only musical performances were underground blues jams.” Musicians like Jhett “would sneak out together and fire up their gear.” During that time, he started writing a lot of blues music. Jhett says, “The Lord always opens windows when doors close.” This new outlet led him from folk rock to blues.

Jhett says his most meaningful performances are not necessarily for a large crowd. Some of his best memories are performing for friends. He says, “Whenever I can arrive at a place of truth, and I can see it resonate with someone else, those are the most memorable performances. For me, it’s all about performing live and connecting with people one-on-one. I want to leave people with the experience that they couldn’t have gotten more out of a concert.”

Jhett Black is touring to promote his latest blues rock record Babel ,” created with fellow musicians Al Basil and Glenn Halverson. The album will be released on CD and vinyl. Fans can also find collaborative singles that Jhett will independently release each month. One of the newly released singles is his version of the Beatles’ song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

Although Jhett currently lives in Tennessee, he comes home to New Mexico to perform and stay in his mountain casita, where he has recorded many songs. “I love the outlaw vibe of New Mexico, the open space, and the stark contrast of the landscape. The high desert is always going to be home in my heart.” Now, when he is not busy touring, you can find Jhett snowboarding, writing music, or reading a good book.

Fans can catch local Jhett Black shows in Ruidoso, Roswell, and Santa Fe. For aspiring musicians, he says, “If it’s put in your heart to play music, if it vibrates deep in your bones, there’s really no stopping that. Hunker in for the long haul.”

Visit Jhettblackblues.com for upcoming performances.

“The high desert is always gonna be home in my heart.”

SPATIAL HARMONY COLOR CONSULTING AND DESIGN

Marisa Saavedra-Gutierrez, owner of Spatial Harmony Color Consulting and Design in Old Town Albuquerque, infuses a Southwest-inspired artistic style to residential and commercial design. A multi-generational native of New Mexico, she told us, “I take a lot of pride in our

culture with my design. We get a lot of sunlight here. Our paint colors are going to be different than a coastal palette. You have to honor the desert landscape. There’s a reason people move here. Plus, New Mexico has a lot of amazing artists. Whenever I curate art or furniture for a client, I really tap into that.”

Spatial Harmony is a full-service design company that consults on space planning for new construction and remodeling, as well as consultation for interior/exterior paint, flooring, tiles, backsplashes, displayed artwork, and furnishings. Marisa also liaises with contractors so that everything goes as planned.

She says, “Homeowners need to make thousands of decisions when building or remodeling a home. They need to decide on everything from faucets to doorknobs. I guide them through the process.”

Marissa designs layouts based on the client’s lifestyle. For example, if a client has a lot of hanging art, she makes sure that there is adequate wall space. Marisa says, “I take great pride that I don’t stamp my same design on everything. I go with the client’s vision. I always tell them that I’m along on their journey.”

Marisa is also a partner in Lavender Road Handcrafted Luxury, a retail shop specializing in home décor for bath, bedroom, and dining. With Melissa Welch, her friend of 20 years, they have a curated inventory of artisanal textiles, jewelry, Talavera, spa products, pillows, sculptures, ceramics, table runners, placemats, and napkins. The shop also enables Marisa to procure unique items for interior design projects.

Business partner Melissa told us, “The goal is to create a brand collection of affordable luxury. We feature a lot of pieces that are not just nice to look at but have a functional everyday use.”

One of the collections that Lavender Road features is a line of high-quality, handwoven Turkish towels produced on a shuttle loom–a traditional Ottoman technique at risk of being replaced by modern methods. Marisa told us, “There are only nine families left in Turkey that have passed down this heritage trade. Every time we sell a piece here, it helps keep that skill alive.”

Marisa’s design studio is located upstairs from Lavender Road at 328 San Felipe NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104, in the Poca a Poco Patio in Old Town. Her phone number is 505.903.3200, and her website is www.spatialharmony.net. Lavender Road’s phone number is 505.289.3968, and the website is www.lavenderroadlux.com

“We support each other. We adapt to new opportunities together. We’re growing together. We don’t get stagnant or complacent.”
— VALERIE MAES

Sandia Marble is notable for its dynamic approach to business. Since Valerie Maes and her husband Gilbert purchased Sandia Marble over 9 years ago, they have embraced change to bring an all-inclusive range of  products and services for new residential construction as well as  residential renovations to New Mexico.   As Valerie told us, “We’re always learning. We’re always growing. We’re always adapting.”

This isn’t by luck. General Manager Bill McManaway states, “The growth that Sandia Marble has experienced has always been a planned process. We currently handle all building trades in-house, from drafting and design, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC to final residential construction. That allows us to have more control over the entire project. It also helps reduce costs and offers a more reliable schedule.”

Sandia Marble has been in business for 25 years and has established itself as a leader in high-quality, custom countertop fabrication and installation as well as in-house manufacturer and installation of bathroom products such as vanities, shower/bath wall systems, countertops, and soap and shampoo holders. After listening to their customers’ request for a one-stop remodeler, Sandia Marble recently expanded by adding a new design/build division. They hired additional talent that includes an interior designer, an architectural engineer, a project coordinator/manager, lead carpenters and a general manager.

Elisa Porter, the interior designer at Sandia Marble, said, “My goal is not only to create a beautiful space for the homeowners but also to make sure it’s functional and that it’s going to work for them.”  She is committed to each

client through their remodel’s completion, as is the whole team.  “I want to make sure the project is fulfilled and they’re happy with what the Sandia Marble team has accomplished.”

Sandia Marble has a long-established, outstanding reputation for kitchen and bath renovations. The company has consistently made significant investments in equipment, giving them an edge in capabilities and workmanship. They have become increasingly digital to provide detailed previews of remodels, and new equipment that helps control remodel costs and save time.   Cross utilization of the crews’ talent and in-house fabrication/ installation of stone countertops as well as manufacturer/installer of cultured marble and polystone – a Sandia Marble specialty –controls costs, too.

Many other contractors subcontract to Sandia Marble on projects for their countertops, bathroom products as well as installation. Scheduling Manager Jeremy Kohlmeyer told us, “The progress this company has made is just amazing to me. The technology and new equipment investment has made us one of the top companies.” He added, “I love working here. I love working on houses and seeing the renovations take place.”

The owner, Valerie, tells us that a key factor in the company’s success is the collegial culture of their business. She says, “We can’t stay complacent as a business or as individuals. The employees are the key drivers of our growth.  We support each other. We adapt to new opportunities together. We grow together.”

Sandia Marble is located at 1424 1st Street NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102. Their phone number is 505.843.7490. Their website is https://www.sandiamarble.com/

Handmade Soap

Add a spa-like feel to your home with this refreshing soap recipe that's simple to make at home.

lavender honey lemon soap

ingredients

• 2 lb. goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap

• 1 lemon rind, zested

• 3 tablespoons of dried lavender buds

• 2 tablespoons of honey

• 15 drops of lavender essential oil

• 6 drops of lemon essential oil

• jar or bowl for melting soap base

• Silicone mold

directions

Chop soap into smaller pieces. It will melt faster this way. Place in bowl and microwave (or double boil). Be careful to watch soap and not let it burn.  If you are using microwave, heat in 30 second increments, stirring frequently. Once soap is melted add your essential oils first. Once essential oils have been added and mixed thoroughly, add the lavender buds, lemon zest and honey. Have your mold ready to go, on a flat, even surface. You’ll want to move quickly before the soap cools too much. Mix everything thoroughly again, and pour mixture into mold. Let the soap cool for 2-3 hours until bars are completely solid. Wrap or package however you like.
