AWARE FITNESS COACHING
I had the pleasure of interviewing Meagan Ryan, Registered Dietitian, and Patrick Ryan, Fitness Coach with Aware Fitness Coaching. This power couple is changing the way fitness is viewed and done. Both Meagan and Patrick believe in providing the tools to help you to empower yourself and your fitness journey. By discovering the “Why” they can reach clients no matter where they are.
WHY IS NEW MEXICO THE BEST PLACE FOR FITNESS?
PATRICK: We get 310 days of sunlight every year, which allows everyone an opportunity to work out the way they want. Whether that is mountain biking to canoeing, our weather gives people access to outside forms of exercise while playing in mother nature’s playground.
MEAGAN: You can explore other interests while getting your workout in. Most of our outdoor spaces are free! Whether you are entering the Sandia Mountains or going to a rural New Mexico town you can always find a free place to have an adventure and work out at the same time.

“By 2030 50% of the US population will be considered obese and we are not getting to the core of the problem, but instead putting a band-aid on it. If meal plans and big box fitness worked, the industry would not be a multi-billion industry.”
>
13 CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/ALBUQUERQUE JUNE 2023
WHAT GOT YOU INTERESTED IN PURSUING A BUSINESS IN ONLINE FITNESS COACHING?
PATRICK: In 2013 I was working with clients an hour a week in person and would not see the kind of progress that was being promised. I was seeing a gap in where the true changes happen, which is not for that one hour but the 23 other hours in their day. The industry needs to evolve and so do the people in the industry. This comes from utilizing and tailoring the support through technology that people are trying to navigate their health while at home. The big box theory is if you sell people in the belief with working with a trainer your goals will be true, but the style is to create recurring customers instead of providing them the tools needed.
MEAGAN: When going through my internship as a Dietician I learned that a lot of the practice is reactive instead of getting down to the core of what someone needs. People need a lot more attention initially to get them through the hump and to teach them the proper ways. I wanted to provide more of an impact in my client’s life instead of the regular conventional Dietician.
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT AWARE FITNESS COACHING?
PATRICK: You have coaches that care and have a deeply invested route in your goals and staying consistent. Helping clients to solve their problems once and for all and getting off the roller-coaster. A healthy life is no longer synopsis with being out of reach.
MEAGAN: We teach skills instead of doing it for you. We want our clients to understand the why and why it matters and create those skills, so you won’t need us with time. We do not want to create a cookie-cutter meal and workout plan so that you feel you cannot adjust.

Give Your Man His Space
Ok ladies, for those of you that live with your man and are not too keen on his collection of deer heads or affinity for all things Chicago Blackhawks, then let me help you create his very own man cave, that you and he can be proud of.
With how a man cave is usually done in mind, there are plenty of ways to make this hideaway both agreeable and full of style. I always start with what is most important to your man and 9 out of 10 times it is comfortable seating. So, with that in mind, I start with smart seating. Do we need a sectional? Can we get away with a cool reclining chair? Do we need Barstools? Comfortable, durable, and stylish seating is my jumping-off point.
Next, of course, there will need to be a TV for gaming and/ or sports watching. Try and get him the size he wants, if it can
work in space and not be too obnoxious (ladies, you’ll thank me later) because this is all men truly care about. He gets his big TV, then you have more of an opportunity to get what you want in the rest of the house. It’s a win-win.
Lastly, without getting too “theme-y,” I organize what he loves and treasures into a gallery wall. I recently did one wall of really cool wallpaper for a husband that was a huge Star Wars fan. It was a black and white Star Wars print that gave this aficionado a fun way to bring his subject matter and style together.
No matter who you are or what you like, I believe every person needs a space where he or she can relax, breathe and be joyful in. Man Caves are no exception.

THE GIFT OF ROBERT HARKNESS
Robert was a goal-oriented high achiever. From a young age, he achieved the highest rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts and went on to graduate high school with honors and acceptance into his dream school, The University of Southern California.
While in college, Robert studied in Florence, Italy for a semester. In Florence, he was inspired by some of the most amazing art. He later received his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and a Minor in Communication Design. From College, Robert was recruited to work as a designer and assistant Art Director for Playboy Magazine. In his three years of employment, he was recognized for his award-winning design work.
From Playboy, Robert was hired by Outside Magazine in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as Art Director. Robert took inspiration from the diverse landscape, cultural heritage, and laid-back vibe of New Mexico.
From 2015 to 2023, Robert created a vast amount of work. Even though he struggled to get his work exhibited and sold, Robert was known in his community for his oil paintings, printmaking, mural work, and drawings.
Roberts’ last major project was a set of large exterior wall murals depicting New Mexico places and an interior mural of Taos Pueblo at the Nova Point Apartments in Albuquerque. His murals can also be viewed in Santa Fe, Pojoaque, and Albuquerque, showing vibrant colors and the unique beauty and culture that New Mexico offers.

History of Tattooing
A Guide to How Tattooing has Evolved
ARTICLE BY BEN SHAW ARCHETYPE TATTOO
INSPIRED BY | EDUCATION
20
The history of tattooing is intertwined with various ideologies that come to mind when we hear the word “tattoo”. It can be associated with pain, taboos, coolness, words, pictures, symbols, and more. Tattoos are a form of artistic expression that involves using ink or dyes to make permanent or temporary designs on the skin, ranging from names of loved ones to reminders of important moments, stories, reflections, and symbolic representations of rituals, logos, love, peace, and more. These designs can include lines, ovals, words, dots, and other elements that convey meaning depending on the traditions or way of life of the people who have them. The process of creating a tattoo is known as tattooing. The word “tattoo” originated from the Tahitian word “tatu” or “tatau”, which means to mark something. Historical artifacts suggest that tattooing dates back to the Upper Paleolithic era, which is known for its association with art. Clay, red ochre disks, and sharp bone implements were used for skin pigmentation in the tattooing process. Evidence of tattooing tools that are at least 12,000 years old has been discovered in France, Portugal, and Scandinavia.
Remains dating back to 3100 to 3370 BC show the earliest known examples of tattooing. A Bronze Age mummy found in the Alps known as Otzi the Iceman, dating from the fifth to fourth millennium BC, is the oldest surviving evidence of tattoos. Blue tattoos on the lumbar spine and ankles were found on Otzi’s body. Tattooing was also practiced in other countries such as Ancient Egypt and Siberia, with evidence of tattoos found on mummies in Egypt. The expansion of the Egyptian empire contributed to the spread of tattooing knowledge and practice.
One of the most notable mummies with tattoos was that of a priestess of the goddess Hathor. Subsequently, two other female mummies with different tattoos were discovered, including diamond patterns on the arms and chest, and dots and parallel lines on the arms, thighs, and navel. Although initially believed that only females were tattooed, evidence of tattoos on male Pharaohs and other high-profile individuals suggests that tattooing was practiced by both genders in ancient Egypt, where tattooing was embraced as early as during the construction of the pyramids.
Tattooing was also practiced in Japan, where a traditional method called irezumi involved tattooing the face, unlike in Egyptian mummies where the tattoos were found on the limbs and arms. Documentation dating back to 5000 BC provides evidence of well-decorated tattoos in Japan. However, the practice of tattooing declined in Japan when influential figures adopted the Chinese belief that tattooing was barbaric. Tattooing was introduced to China around the Zhou Dynasty and became associated with punishment, with those who were tattooed considered outcasts in society. However, tattooing regained popularity and demand over time.
There is also evidence of tattooing practices in Greece and Rome, as documented by historical figures such as Herodotus, Plutarch, Plato, Galen, Seneca, Aristophanes, and Pliny. Tattooing was used for identification purposes in these regions, distinguishing citizens from slaves, robbers, prisoners, and soldiers.
Tattooing was also practiced outside the Roman Empire in regions such as Britons, Iberians, Goths, Scots,

Celts, Germans, and Scythians, although it was associated with barbarism in their cultures. Coins depicting tattooed faces provide evidence of tattooing in ancient times. Remains of a female mummy with tattoos on the arms and hands have been found on the beach of St. Lawrence Island in Alaska, dating back nearly 2000 years.
James Captain Cook is credited with discovering tattooing in the Polynesian Islands, which dates back over 2000 years as well. The Polynesian people viewed tattooing as a way of identification and cultural significance. Different islands, such as New Zealand and Tahiti, had their unique methods and styles of tattooing, with patterns like the moko symbolizing rank and status. In Tongan culture, only priests of high rank were allowed to perform tattooing, which was associated with social status and used during social ceremonies.
Warriors in Tonga were tattooed from the waist to above the knee, while in Samoa, the tattooing was done from the waist to below the knee. Sydney Parkinson and Joseph Banks, scientific translators, documented the history of tattoos in the Polynesian Islands and created images related to it, which led to the spread of tattooing to the Western world.
Captain Cook’s travels to the Polynesian Islands with Prince Omai, a heavily tattooed Tahitian, sparked interest in tattooing among Europeans. Tattooing eventually spread to the United States, with Marin Hildebrandt becoming the first skilled tattoo artist in America. In the 19th century, the Bowery District in
the US became known for traditional tattooing, and Samual O’Reilly invented a machine using electricity (1896), making tattooing more accessible and affordable to the middle and upper class.
Tattooing also had military connections, as seen in ancient Rome where soldiers were marked with tattoos to signify their profession and military units. Tattoos were also used to distinguish between active and former military members. In some cultures, tattoos were used to create connections among family members, especially among military men who were often away from their families for long periods of time.
Tattooing has an exceptional historical background as discovered by the archeologists and will continue even to our present life. With respect to living bodies. From then on till today the practice had continued evolving and even developing to modernized styles. It’s significant in society will continue being analyzed. Tattooing and tattoos were perceived as a form of social communication that enhanced social interaction especially because it was imposed on the physical body where everyone could see. This is in that the ink pigment inserted in the body is directly linked to the body itself. This art vehemently produced a link between the body and society. Seeing a tattoo on someone was a symbol of something, it showed a new creature and identity. In fact, a tattooed person was a walking advert showing how their past life looked like.

ARTICLE BY MAGNOLIA ZUNIGA, CLINICAL AYURVEDIC SPECIALIST PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
RYAN STRONG DEDICATED TO HEALING FROM LYME DISEASE
He had to find another solution. Strong sought second and third opinions and he got a diagnosis: Lyme disease.
AYURVEDIC DOCTOR AND KRIYA YOGA TEACHER, SACRAMENTO
It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when Ryan Strong’s symptoms began. Probably during the few weeks, he spent at a spiritual retreat on the East Coast –– a ritual he does every year. This time was different. When he returned to his Sacramento home, his joints, and muscles were unusually sore. His knees, hands, jaw, and joints were inflamed, and his surroundings seemed unusually gray and cloudy. Something was off.
One morning, four or five months later, he opened the refrigerator searching for the carton of milk he had recently bought. Bewildered, he asked his stepdaughter where it was. She reached past him and pulled it out; all along, it had been directly in front of him. “Right here”, she giggled sheepishly. This was the moment he realized something was wrong. He decided to get help.
Strong went to his doctor and took a series of tests. They all came back negative. Scans showed severe arthritis in his joints. His doctor said he would no longer be able to do his yearly hikes. For Strong, nature is commitment and intimacy.
Yet when that doctor’s remedies failed, Strong decided to heal himself. He spent the next few months creating an Ayurvedic protocol that combined herbal medications, meditations, visualizations, and lifestyle and dietary changes.
His first decision was to no longer identify with being sick. “When you’re dealing with a chronic illness that is hard to pin down,” Strong observed, “it can be difficult for loved ones too. They love and want to support you, but at some point, they experience compassion fatigue. They start to look at you differently. They start to think you’re crazy.” In the Ayurvedic tradition, the mind is extraordinarily powerful––it plays a central role in our well-being. Many believe that when we stop speaking about the symptoms, we stop giving life to them.
He extended his meditation practice by incorporating visualization exercises. He began to envision what it looked and felt like to be healthy, vibrant, and symptom-free.
Then he became firm in making the dietary and lifestyle changes necessary to address Lyme disease at its root. These types of changes are never easy, but Strong was determined.
It took Ryan Strong two years to become symptom-free, and 2.5 years for the joint pain to subside. He has been free of symptoms since 2013.

FATHER’S DAY GIFT GUIDE
A GIFT GUIDE OUTSIDE THE TRADITIONAL APPROACH
Father’s Day is just around the corner, and many of us are thinking about how we can honor the special fathers in our lives. This dilemma conjures up the same old boring clichés. Maybe we could get him a drill set or a barbecue grill? With this yearly predicament upon us, we ask ourselves, why not celebrate Father’s Day with the gift of jewelry?
Even if your father isn’t someone who likes to show off, surprising him with a piece of jewelry can add some extra charm to his appearance and showcase his individuality. Let’s talk about rings…we’re talking about a statement ring that can add some serious style to his look. Perhaps it’s a chunky nugget ring with diamond embellishments or maybe a signet ring that reflects a personal passion. Either way, rings can be a great way for your father to show his unique personality.
Of course, we can’t forget about necklaces. A stylish gold chain is an excellent way to give a gift that symbolizes the paternal bond. Consider the properties of a gold chain. It’s made from golden links held together in a nearly unbreakable bond. Gold is an absolute natural marvel in that it doesn’t tarnish over time.
Perhaps the best part about choosing jewelry as a gift is that it is something that can be passed down to the next generation. Jewelry has a way of holding sentimental value and can become a treasured family heirloom.
So, this Father’s Day, don’t be afraid to add some sparkle to your dad’s wardrobe. The right piece of jewelry can be a beautiful way to honor and celebrate your father. If you’re still searching for the perfect gift, consider giving him a piece of gold jewelry that he can cherish for years to come.
