Welcome to the Explore Issue. Ironically, I am writing this month’s Lifestyle Letter from 35,000 feet, on my way to explore the coral reefs around the Florida Keys. I’ll let you know how it goes next month!

Inside this issue, we meet Peter Kleinhenz, Executive Director of the Aiken Land Conservancy and discover how he works with land owners to ensure that future generations will be able to explore Aiken’s natural resources.

For those seeking a getaway close to home, we present Magnolia Shadows, a picturesque equestrian resort nestled in Ridge Spring. A stay here is a retreat into elegance and tranquility, and it's worth exploring!

Venturing a bit further out, we visit Emeline, a charming boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Charleston, the perfect home base for exploring the Holy City.

Television personality Vera Stewart invited us to join her and the Women of Woodside for tea at Pat Eitland's home and tea cottage in Mount Vintage. We replied with an emphatic yes and hope you enjoy this behind-the-scenes look at the production of her television show, Very Vera.

It is time to stow my laptop, return my tray table to its full upright position and start this underwater adventure. See you next month!

Tea and Tranquility

Explore the Perfect Tea Party with Pat Eitland at Her Lenten Rose Garden Tea Cottage

Nestled in the picturesque neighborhood of Mount Vintage is Pat Eitland’s home and tea cottage, a haven of beauty and hospitality. This enchanting location served as the backdrop for a segment of the popular show Very Vera, where Vera Stewart and her crew filmed a decadent garden tea party. The event was attended by members and guests of the Women of Woodside Supper Club, who were treated to Eitland’s exceptional hosting skills.

CONTINUED >

Eitland’s passion for tea parties began many years ago when she and her daughter were invited to tea hosted by her daughter’s British violin teacher. This experience sparked a love for the tradition that has only grown over the years. Eitland’s journey in hospitality further blossomed during her time at the illustrious Saint Paul Hotel in Minnesota, where she honed her skills and was even honored and crowned with the title of Duchess of the hotel before she left.

Eitland’s husband was so supportive of her passion for hosting tea parties that he built her a custom tea cottage in their backyard. The cottage is surrounded by a stunning garden filled with the most breathtaking variety of flowers, including several Lenten Roses, after which the cottage is named. The garden is not just a visual delight; it also provides ingredients for teas, such as mint and jasmine, adding a personal touch to each tea party.

The garden tea party, filmed by the Very Vera crew, showcased Eitland’s meticulous attention to detail and her deep appreciation for the art

of hosting. The guests in attendance enjoyed a serene afternoon in this lush garden setting. When speaking with one of the guests, Cody Anderson, owner of The Constantine House and George Funeral Home, he stated, “I am just so excited to be present in such a bucolic setting for an afternoon tea.”

Eitland takes pride in every aspect of her tea parties, from the carefully chosen three-course menus to the elegant presentation. During her interview with Stewart, Eitland shared some of her secrets to hosting the perfect tea party. She correctly demonstrated the art of folding napkins, emphasizing that it adds elegance to the table setting. She spoke about the timing and duration and how a tea party should only last about two hours, which provides ample time for guests to relax and enjoy their experience without feeling rushed. She even advised the correct way to stir, starting at noon and softly folding the tea back and forth, similar to rocking in a boat.

Eitland’s dedication to hosting tea parties is deeply rooted in her love for serving others. Her early missionary work and experience at the Saint Paul Hotel shaped her approach to hospitality. She stated, “I believe it is so important that I personally serve each guest and get to know their stories; this time brings us together and friendship blooms.”

The Lenten Rose Garden Cottage is more than just a venue; it’s a testament to Eitland’s passion for bringing people together and building friendships. Her husband’s support and the beautiful cottage he created for her stand as a symbol of their shared dreams and love.

Tea parties at the Lenten Rose Garden Cottage are not just about enjoying tea and treats; they are about creating lasting memories and fostering connections. Thanks to Eitland’s genuine care and attention to detail, her guests leave feeling uplifted and cherished.

Through her tea parties, Eitland uses her gifts to bless and mentor others. She has built a community around her that appreciates the simple joys of life and the beauty of shared moments. Her garden, with its vibrant blooms and tranquil ambiance, serves as the perfect setting, making every tea party a welcome respite. Guests are given a chance to slow down, savor the moment and enjoy the company of friends old and new.

“I believe it is so important that I personally serve each guest and get to know their stories; this time brings us together and friendship blooms.”

ANDREA CEROFOLINI’S MAGNOLIA SHADOWS

ARTICLE BY NIKITA HANIF

Andrea Cerofolini’s

Magnolia Shadows

Magnolia Shadows is witness to one man’s pursuit of connection, tranquility and return to nature. Andrea Cerofolini, the visionary behind this equestrian resort and venue, has a journey as captivating as the property itself. Originally hailing from Como, Italy, Cerofolini’s story is one of self-discovery, exploration and new beginnings.

Cerofolini’s journey began in the picturesque town of Como, Italy, known for its serene lakes and lush landscapes. He sought new horizons and ventured to the United States to attend Boston University. After graduation, he thrived in his career in New York City. Despite his success, he felt an overwhelming sense of disconnection when he walked around the city. The longing for a more meaningful life led him to purchase a bird dog, which changed everything.

Dedicated to training his new companion, he traveled outdoors, which enflamed a passion he hadn’t realized was missing. He yearned for a lifestyle where he could immerse himself in nature. With a newfound purpose, he packed his essentials, purchased a horse and trailer, and he and his dog began their cross-country adventure searching for their new home.

For two and a half years, Cerofolini traversed the United States, exploring over 175 different properties. He immersed himself in the horse community, competing and forging connections along the way. The journey was exhilarating, but each property fell short of his vision. It wasn’t until a chance meeting at The Willcox in Aiken that his fortune changed.

At The Willcox, Cerofolini met Adam Snow, one of America’s greatest polo players, who introduced him to several other locals. These connections led Cerofolini to a property that resonated deeply with him. When he first laid eyes on the home nestled between two magnificent magnolia trees, he knew he had found his sanctuary. Thus, Magnolia Shadows was born.

Magnolia Shadows is more than just an equestrian resort; it’s a retreat into a world of elegance and natural beauty. The plantation features three king suites and a master, a charming guest cottage and a campground for horse trailers that provides a range of lodging options. From the balcony, guests gaze upon a decadent pool that creates its own oasis.

The property is a picture of pastoral perfection with a beautiful barn surrounded by paddocks and rolling hills. The tack room smells of worn leather and hard work as you glance upon all the ribbons and accolades Cerofolini has achieved. His passion for the animals and his land is why he maintains the land naturally, ensuring the horses thrive in a pristine environment untouched by chemicals. His commitment to sustainable practices is evident in every aspect of the property’s management.

Guests at Magnolia Shadows are treated to culinary excellence at Riserva 1895, the on-site restaurant. It is open to the public by reservation and is commanded by Chef Cecelia Lezzani. Also a native of Italy, she elegantly plans menus around homemade and organic ingredients, offering an unforgettable dining experience.

Magnolia Shadows transports guests to a simpler time. The scent of fresh jasmine teases you as it wafts through the air, and the crisp atmosphere invites visitors to relax and rejuvenate. It’s a place where the hustle and noise of modern life fade away and are replaced by the gentle rhythm of nature. Cerofolini’s journey is evidence of the power of following one’s heart. Magnolia Shadows is not just a destination; it’s a dream realized, inviting guests to step into a world of serene beauty and timeless charm.

Emeline

EXPLORE DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON FROM THIS CHARMING BOUTIQUE HOTEL

My usual escapades in the Lowcountry of South Carolina take me to the fringes—Kiawah River, Mt. Pleasant and even a tent in the forest. I'm drawn to the untamed, like the thrill of hiking, kayaking and occasionally chasing alligators. However, on a recent trip, my husband and I decided to embrace a different kind of adventure, a more refined one in the heart of Charleston. Our base was Emeline, a delightful boutique hotel nestled in downtown Charleston, known for its unique blend of modern comfort and vintage charm.

As we approached the hotel, its unassuming exterior gave no hint of the vibrant energy that awaited us. Stepping through the front door, we were greeted by a lively atmosphere. To our left, Clerks Coffee Company was abuzz with friends enjoying a fresh cup or a leisurely Sunday brunch, setting the tone for our stay.

We walked up the stairs to check in and were immediately offered a round of Plantar’s Punch, a Charleston favorite. We quickly dropped our bags off in our suite before tackling brunch at the hotel’s main dining establishment, Frannie and The Fox, a woodfired eatery with beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces. Tables were covered with sumptuous food offerings and pretty cocktails. I am a pizza connoisseur, and though not particularly brunchy, I had to sample one of their wood-fired pies. It did not disappoint.

For all the energy in Emeline's common areas, our suite was a quiet oasis. Once inside, we were sheltered from the bustling city and hotel noise. The little things make an overnight experience unique, and Emeline delivered those in spades. The linens were luxurious and quite spectacular. The suite was spacious and equipped with state-of-the-art technology with a vintage feel. The turntable and LPs were a nice touch.

CONTINUED >

We planned to walk the city, immerse ourselves in its history and architecture and maybe do a little shopping on King Street. The weather did not cooperate, so we punted and visited the South Carolina Aquarium, the perfect place to spend a rainy day (or a hot one) in Charleston. I got my wildlife fix, and we especially enjoyed watching the river otters frolic about.

For us, the highlight of any trip to Charleston is usually the food. In addition to our fabulous brunch at Frannie and The Fox, we indulged in a variety of cuisines at Virginia’s on King (southern fried chicken!), Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit and Page’s Okra Grill. Page’s is a favorite of ours near Shem Creek, and we hit it on our way out after a short beach day at Isle of Palms (less than 20 minutes from downtown Charleston).

Emeline was the perfect host. Its prime location allowed us to explore downtown Charleston on foot. We were within walking distance of any place we wanted to visit downtown and only a short drive to the beach. We enjoyed our stay there and will visit again when we return to the Holy City. Next time, we will bring our pooch, Roxie, as Emeline is extremely dog-friendly - their Pawsome Package includes a comfy bed and special dog treats made by their in-house pastry chef.

Emeline is super pet friendly. Ask about their Pawsome Package.

STRETCH ZONE

BRINGING BACK VITALITY THROUGH FLEXIBILITY

Stretching has really evolved over the years. Many of us remember the one, two, three touches between the legs in PE class or grabbing our toes while a searing pain shot up the back of our hamstrings. Most people consider it a job well done to perform a quick quad stretch and arm reach after a workout. The truth is our bodies require more. Stretching is crucial to overall health, vitality and performance. It helps those adults who are seeking to rise in the morning feeling younger with decreased pain and stiffness, working to

enhance athletic performance and looking to improve injuries.

New to Aiken is Stretch Zone, owned by couple Nora Dahlman and Jeff Cleary. Stretch Zone offers practitioner-assisted stretching using patented equipment and personalized stretch protocols to bring the real value of stretching to everyone!  Nora, an avid horse rider and competitor, found that she was struggling with her performance because of pain and stiffness from an old injury. She stumbled upon a Stretch Zone down in Florida, went in for a demo, and the rest is history. The benefits were incredible and Nora saw what a wonderful advantage it would be to the very active Aiken community!

Practitioners at Stretch Zone receive hours of hands-on training and continuing education in order to provide clients with customized, informed and safe stretching sessions. Stretch Zone is the only assisted practitioner stretching company whose practitioners must test out of a nationally certified training program to become employed at any Stretch Zone studio!

Stretch Zone invites interested individuals to the studio to enjoy a complimentary demo stretch beginning with a discussion about the individual’s specific body concerns and any injuries and goals, along with a flexibility assessment.   Client goals can be as broad as decreasing stiffness and pain from work or daily living

requirements to more focused goals like improving that golf game or doing the splits!  Stretch Zone practitioners are trained and tested on a 70-page stretch manual which they use to make personalized protocols that meet the varying needs and aspirations of every member.

Yoga, pilates, instructor-led exercise classes and stretching at home are all great ways to increase flexibility and improve movement of the body.  Nora and Jeff are advocates for all of these and participate themselves.  What Stretch Zone offers is completely different.  Stretching without an assistant and without the patented, stabilizing belting system used by Stretch Zone requires use of muscles for the bending, leaning, and raising. Through assisted stretching, which occurs in a totally relaxed state, clients receive controlled, engaging stretches for optimal, immediate benefits, lasting results and support of overall wellness.

Since opening this past January, Nora and Jeff and the Stretch Zone staff are really loving getting to know their new clients and the Aiken community. Their business is growing fast!  They make a point to be out at local events like golf tournaments, pickleball courts and health fairs to educate the public about Stretch Zone services and its benefits. When talking about owning this new business, Nora stated, “The thing I’m enjoying most is how much we’re actually helping people.” It’s clear they have a passion for assisting clients in improving their quality of life, mobility and overall state of mind.

They are located at 1404 Whiskey Road next to Fresh Market, so stop by to sign up for a demo and begin the journey towards bringing back your vitality!

AIKEN LAND CONSERVANCY

ARTICLE BY NIKITA HANIF | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED Protecting Nature’s Legacy

The Aiken Land Conservancy, led by Executive Director Peter Kleinhenz, is dedicated to preserving the stunning landscapes of Aiken and its surrounding areas. This mostly volunteer-driven organization is an accredited land trust committed to balancing growth with conservation, promoting a clean quality of life and setting up conservation easements that offer tax benefits to landowners while preserving their land. A conservation easement is a legally binding agreement that restricts development and certain land uses on a property to protect its conservation values, ensuring the land remains preserved for environmental, historical or recreational purposes.

Kleinhenz collaborates with the City of Aiken on zoning and economic analysis, ensuring development respects natural spaces. Lisa Darden, owner of True Bleu Farm, praised the Conservancy's help in placing 187 acres of her property into a conservation easement. This initiative allowed her to witness remarkable ecological benefits, including increased plant life and wildlife after a prescribed burn managed by Black Magic Land Management.

Darden appreciates the legacy of the untouched land she leaves behind, highlighting the conservancy's personalized approach to easements. She commended Kleinhenz's excellent job of monitoring the land and fostering a strong relationship that ensures their efforts benefit conservation. The Aiken Land Conservancy continues to make a significant impact, safeguarding natural beauty for future generations.
