Unleashing Happiness: From Tails to Tales
I am constantly amazed by the power of connection and the simple joys that enrich our lives. This issue celebrates two sources of boundless love and unwavering companionship: kids and pets.
Children, with their infectious laughter and curious minds, have a remarkable ability to bring light into our world. Their imaginations know no bounds, reminding us to embrace creativity and see the magic in everyday moments. Whether it's through their innocent questions or their unfiltered perspectives, kids inspire us to view life with fresh eyes and rediscover the beauty that surrounds us.
Similarly, our faithful furry friends teach us invaluable lessons about loyalty, empathy and unconditional love. They greet us with wagging tails and wet kisses, reminding us that a simple act of kindness can make a world of difference. Pets provide companionship, comfort, and a shoulder to lean on during both joyful and challenging times. They teach us responsibility, empathy and the importance of nurturing a life beyond our own.
The bond between kids and pets is something truly extraordinary. It is heartwarming to witness the joy that blossoms when they interact, forming friendships that transcend language barriers. Together, they explore the world, learning from one another and creating memories that will last a lifetime. We just recently welcomed home a new puppy, and it’s been amazing to see the relationship grow between our son and his new best friend in such a short time.
So, let us celebrate the invaluable presence of children and pets in our lives. Let us appreciate the way they effortlessly weave happiness into our routines, reminding us to find joy in the little things. May we cherish these connections, nurturing them with love and care, for they truly enrich our lives in ways that cannot be measured.
We hope you enjoy this issue, packed with helpful information for families with pets, teens and kids of all ages.

Welcome to the Jungle
Jungle Roots Children’s Dentistry & Orthodontics provides outstanding care in a colorful and fun setting
ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE SLEZAK
Dr. John Culp decided he wanted to be an orthodontist when he was in the eighth grade.
Positive experiences with his own orthodontist inspired John’s interest in orthodontics.
“After I enjoyed learning and practicing restorative dentistry in dental school and realized I loved working with kids, I decided to switch to pediatric dentistry,” he says.
In 1994, John fulfilled his goal when he and his wife Karen opened Jungle Roots Children’s Dentistry &
Orthodontics in Ahwatukee, after visiting and falling in love with the area.
At the time, it was the only pediatric dentist in Ahwatukee.
“Our original location was a tiny 946-square-foot office with four chairs,” John says, adding that he and his staff quickly outgrew this space after one year.
After their first son was born, the Culps took a weekend trip to Seattle, Washington. While they were there,

they visited the Children’s Museum near the Space Needle.
“Inside, there was an area where each of the world’s biomes were represented. You could walk right into the tundra or grasslands or jungle,” John says.
“Karen and I thought how cool it would be to have each room at Jungle Roots also be like going into a different biome.”
The Culps asked the manager of the Children’s Museum who built the unique display, and were delighted to learn it was a Tucson-based business called The Larson Company.
After meeting with the company to discuss their vision for the interior of Jungle Roots, the Culps decided on a theme, and soon were in a jungle-themed office.
“We were the first office in America to incorporate a theming in a pediatric dental office,” John says.
Over the years, Jungle Roots has not only expanded its office size and number of patients, but also its staff and services.
For example, Dr. Gregory Olsen provides orthodontic services to young patients, and Dr. Jason Brady is a dental anesthesiologist. A team of hygienists and office staff round out the practice.
As Karen notes, while the jungle theme definitely helps set Jungle Roots apart by creating a calming and engaging environment for children, so does their commitment to providing 5-star patient care and customer service.
“We want our patients to have a memorable visit, but more than that, we want
them to have a positive experience that lasts with them as they continue their dental journey,” Karen says.
“To attain this goal, we welcome patients into our practice as if we were welcoming them into our home. And it is a home for them, actually a dental home, where they can have all of their pediatric dental needs met, and orthodontics in house, setting them up for a lifetime of dental health.”
For John, treating his patients as he would his own three boys is very important to him.
He develops relationships with each of his patients, always considering what is in their best interest.
“The utmost compliment and tribute is that I have many patients who came to me as kids themselves and now bring their own children. It is very rewarding and inspiring,” John says.
When they are not working at Jungle Roots, the Culps enjoy traveling with their family, and giving back to the community however they can.
For instance, Karen teaches group fitness classes at the Ahwatukee YMCA, and the Culps support local youth sports, participate in local events, and donate to local schools, organizations, and churches.
Looking back, the Culps are pleased with their decision to open Jungle Roots in the same area they call home.
“Ahwatukee is definitely our community,” John says.

Charting a Course for Success
In our rapidly changing world, it is essential to provide teenagers with the tools and guidance they need to thrive. High school can be a transformative period, setting the stage for a successful journey into college and beyond.
Miranda Niemoth, the founder of The Intentional Applicant, helps families navigate the college admissions process. She says there are several things teens can do to set themselves up for future success, whether or not they choose the collegiate path.
9TH GRADE: LAYING THE FOUNDATION
High school demands a higher level of academic engagement, and developing effective study habits becomes paramount. Niemoth suggests that teenagers learn how to take comprehensive notes in class, keep track of assignments, and adopt different study strategies for better performance.
Extracurricular activities play a crucial role in shaping a teenager's character and providing valuable life skills. Niemoth says

encouraging teenagers to explore their interests – like sports, band, performing arts, robotics and more – fosters a sense of purpose and self-discovery.
Niemoth also emphasizes the importance of embracing failure. “We are seeing in today’s youth a real fear of failure,” says Niemoth. “I urge students to learn, as freshmen, to step outside of their comfort zone as often as possible, even if it may not produce the results they’re used to. They might find that they love it; or they might find out that they’re not good at it or it’s not for them, and that’s just as valuable.”
10TH GRADE: EXPANDING HORIZONS
In their second year, Niemoth suggests students focus on developing the skill of self-advocacy. Recognizing when they need additional support, whether due to struggling or desiring a deeper understanding, and advocating for their needs is essential.
It is also a good time to find opportunities to grow as a leader, Niemoth says. “For many students, leadership happens senior year, and clubs and sports identify their leaders during junior year. I encourage sophomores to seek out older students and mentors whose qualities they admire. They can also take more of a leadership role in the classroom, and begin to think about qualities needed for getting a job.”
For those interested in pursuing a degree, sophomore year is an ideal time to casually begin researching potential colleges and universities. Niemoth advises students to take advantage of any opportunities to visit institutions where they happen to be traveling, or that are in their backyard.
11TH GRADE: PREPPING FOR THE FUTURE
During junior year, students can reflect on how they present themselves in the classroom. “Not every moment of every class is exhilarating,
but what students do in class is shaping how they show up in spaces when they graduate – in the workforce, in college and beyond,” says Niemoth. Teens may start to get questions about their plans after high school. “It can feel overwhelming to know what you want to do for the rest of your life, so I tell students to follow the trail of things that pique their interest and get curious about the careers that play a role in those things.” By investigating the education and experiences required for those careers, students can gain a deeper understanding of potential paths to pursue. Identifying societal problems that need solving can also help guide their exploration.
For students on the college track, especially those aiming for selective colleges, junior year is for slow and steady preparation, according to Niemoth. “By the end of the academic year, students want to be ready to begin their applications. Senior year is still very important, but most accomplishments from 12th grade will not be captured in college admissions.”
12TH GRADE: THE FINAL STRETCH
Seniors are approaching a more independent life, and higher expectations should be placed on them. “If they’re not already experiencing that shift, seniors should explore ways to take on more responsibility. One of the best skills they can practice while still in high school is successfully balancing the demands on their time, while also tending to their personal wellness, important relationships and growth,” says Niemoth.
Aside from maintaining their grades and engagement outside of the classroom, seniors benefit from intentionally preparing for what they will do after high school. “If college is in a teen’s future, they should turn in quality applications as early as possible and seek out all free avenues to fund their education,” Niemoth encourages. “If entering the workforce, they should seek opportunities where they can learn, grow and contribute their personal gifts.”
“I urge students...to step outside of their comfort zone as often as possible...”

FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS HELP THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
When Tosha Tharp’s son was diagnosed with autism as a preschooler, she was shocked and overwhelmed. “Instantly, I found myself with a million questions,” she recalls.
“I was with him as he started occupational therapy and I watched and took notes,” she continues. “Occupational therapy went from three times a week, to twice, to once, to in school only. To make sure he continued to make progress, I converted our playroom into an occupational therapy gym.”
Once she was home though, her son had a hard time participating and making progress because the exercises were tough, and he had trouble communicating. Then, inspired, she put her family’s French bulldog Zoe in a therapy swing with him— and it worked like magic. From then on, Zoe was involved in every therapy activity her son did.
“Rather than focusing on what he couldn’t do, he was focusing, instead, on Zoe,” Tharp explains. “This prompted me to train Zoe as a therapy dog, ultimately culminating in us becoming a registered pet therapy team.”

GIVING BACK | LIFE + CULTURE 18
Fast forward a few years, and in 2015, Tharp created Pawsitive Friendships, a Valley-based nonprofit organization that utilizes trained animal and handler teams to help those with special needs achieve specific therapy goals.
“Because animals are accepting and nonjudgmental, they make it easier for people to feel more relaxed and more comfortable during their personal treatment sessions,” she says.
With Zoe and a variety of animals by her and her volunteers’ sides—including dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, birds and horses, among others—the organization has helped more than 1,350 individuals with special needs through animal-assisted therapy. They help those in educational and clinical settings, including schools, early childhood programs, and adult day programs.
“Sometimes animal-assisted therapy is a hard sell; it’s not the norm. But, once you see it in action, it is amazing,” Thorp says. “Those our volunteers and therapy animals help often make so much progress and you can see what an astounding impact the animals are making.”
Pawsitive Friendships’ volunteer base currently numbers over 135 people from across the Valley, including Ahwatukee.
“We have a lot of Ahwatukee-based volunteers,” she says. “They are perfectly located right in the middle of the places we serve, and they often help not only in Ahwatukee but anywhere in the Valley.”
Now 15, Tharp’s son benefits from the occupational therapy he received in his youth and is thriving at home with Zoe, their fellow French bulldog Jacques, and their family’s pig Penelope. She says that, this fall, Pawsitive Friendships will expand into even more schools, with the goal of having therapy teams in Tucson eventually as well.
“We are always in need of volunteers – with trained animals or without – and donations of course,” Tharp says. “We believe that working together with therapists, aides, and teachers in schools and clinics, our animals can encourage the individuals to achieve their therapy goals. We are grateful to the Ahwatukee community, including our volunteers, who help make this happen.” PawsitiveFriendships.org

Adventures in Reading
A curated selection of books for student readers at every age
ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE SLEZAK
The new school year is here, and it is time to get back into the regular school routine. That not only includes preparing for being in the classroom, but also getting ready to stimulate young minds with reading outside the classroom.
This year, the Phoenix Public Library is celebrating 125 years in service, and one great way to celebrate alongside with them is to check out some of the best books they have to offer. We checked in with the team at the Ironwood Library in Ahwatukee, which has hundreds of choices when it comes to books for all different ages. Lee Payne, Library Manager, gives us a closer look at some of their favorite suggestions for favorite books for different age groups. From preschool through high school, here is a fun look at some of the top options for the reader in your life.

Bear Came Along by Richard T. Morris (LeUyen Pham, Illus.)
This book is an amusing and beautiful story full of meaning and wonder. Readers get to ride along a river with Bear and his friends, during which they are all reminded that we are all on the same river and it is the little things that bring us together. The story itself becomes more colorful along the journey, making this a perfect fit for ages four to eight. Bear Came Along, a 2020 Caldecott Honor Book, builds suspense with every page read aloud, filling the audience with joy as they meet each new character that joins Bear. This book is a great option for ages four to eight.
Preschool: Elementary School:
Today I Will Fly! An Elephant and Piggie Book by Mo Willems
Best known for his Caldecott Honor Books featuring Pigeon and Kuffle Bunny, Mo Willems is great at creating engaging worlds on paper. This book not only allows kids to learn how to read but it’s done in a humorous and enjoyable way. The book is written entirely in dialog between the two main characters, Gerald the Elephant, and Piggie the Pig, who debate if Piggie can fly. Piggie learns that with a little help, he can do just about anything. This is a book that will keep kids and grown-ups wanting to read it over and over again. This book is geared towards a little older than the preschool crowd, really good for ages five to eight.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate (Patricia Castelao, Illus.)
This beautiful and heartwarming tale is narrated by Ivan, a gorilla at the Atlanta Zoo. Ivan, who previously lived in a cage at a circus in the mall, gives readers his observations of human behavior, what life was like working in a circus, and tells us about his small group of other animal friends that change his life forever. One of the most interesting parts of this whole story is that is based off the real Ivan, who really did live in a mall for 27 years before going to a zoo. This book is a great for kids ages eight to twelve.
Middle School: High School:
Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
This book is set in the future, the year 2380, and the Aurora Academy is training the next squad of heroes that will save the world. The star pupil of the school, Tyler, finds himself breaking the rules to rescue a lost girl named Aurora who he finds on an abandoned spaceship. Written from multiple points of view with unique voices, this trilogy has a bit of everything, conspiracies, battles, heists, romances, narrow escapes, and so much more. Great for any teen looking for a good adventure.

RISE AND SHINE
Create an interactive breakfast experience that will have your kids jumping out of bed
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY
BY MINDY WESTER
Let’s be honest, school mornings can be hectic and breakfast can oftentimes be rushed or overlooked entirely. One way to tackle this issue with a fun approach is by creating a self-serve breakfast bar. Kids love options, and this allows them to practice independence and enjoy the process. A station can be set up permanently with choices changing daily or weekly, giving kids something to anticipate getting out of bed for.
We’ve showcased several approaches, but you can choose even one way to make your mornings less rushed. Consider a cereal bar with dispensers, spoons, and bowls within reach. For younger children, a squeeze bottle can be used for messfree milk pours while carafes are suitable for older children. Keep full containers in the refrigerator for easy morning stocking prior to waking up the kiddos.
For a special treat, donut and pancake towers with sprinkles in nearby shakers or jars are sure to be a hit. Mini pancakes and waffles can be prepared in advance

and frozen for up to two months. Simply make them in a big batch, let cool, and layer between sheets of waxed paper in a freezer container. Paper towel dowel rods can be used for bagel or donut stacking and make a fun display. Fresh fruit skewers and to-go boxes filled with graham crackers and toaster pastries are great options for busy mornings. Ready-made yogurt containers and granola provide a tasty yet healthy choice.
A breakfast bar is also a fabulous idea for birthday celebrations, playdates, parties and more. Keep it colorful and playful and it will surely be a hit. Add a “punny” message board or neon ‘Breakfast Bar’ sign for photo ops. Be creative and have fun making a memorable display!
