NEOS 2021

NEOS was one of the few events that managed to successfully continue through lockdown last year and they are very grateful to everyone who visited the many artisans across the North East. North East Open Studios (NEOS) was established in 2003 by a small group of Artists and Makers. They wanted to bring the, largely unknown, vast collection of artistic talent to the general public. NEOS was born and in the first year 2004 67 different artisans took part. This, their 18th year, they are once again offering an amazing array of talented artisans across the North East in various venues. You will find some at home or in their own studios and others collaborating together at joint venues. 252

Zoe D Ceramics

With 250 NEOS members participating this year there is no shortage of artists from all disciplines to explore. With some members grouping together you can find from two, to possibly six, all in one place, what a delight. To help you find these wonderful people there is, as always, the famous yellow book available. There are copies available to pick up from various venues across the North East or you can download a copy. With a google map to help you plan your trips you have a wonderful time ahead of you. Of course watch out for the yellow signs as you drive around you’re sure to find a few on your own doorstep. Research online, in the Yellow book or on social media to find out as much as you can to plan who you would like to visit. I don’t think you will manage all 250 but have fun trying. Please participate in the visitor’s survey you might win £100 or £50 and for another chance to win £50 also enter the Lifestyle competition on page 60 Whatever you do, enjoy visiting these wonderful talented people, they will be delighted to see you.

TRACY GOES OUTSIDE

DEN/DUNNYDUFF WOODS AND THE FALLS OF TARNASH

This is a new regular feature for Lifestyle, Tracy goes outside.

Tracy Chalmers lives in Keith but undertakes lovely walks all over our beautiful country and she has agreed to provide Lifestyle readers with her inside knowledge that she has gleaned from her many adventures. She is starting off with one she is very familiar with on her own doorstep at Keith and is definitely worth a visit if you haven’t already been. I hope you enjoy Tracy’s walks. Please do let us know and send us some photos. Follow Tracy goes outside on Facebook (www.facebook.com/tracygoesoutside)

Distance: 3.5 miles Time: 1.5-2 hours Level: Easy with some elevation Terrain: Some pavement walking at start and finish and well-trodden wood paths. Be careful, as round the falls can be slippery when wet. Access: Arrive by car or public transport. Good train and bus links between Aberdeen and Inverness. Parking available at Reidhaven Square, Keith AB55 5AB

T

he route takes you through the Den woods, the Falls of Tarnash then on to Dunnyduff woods with a great viewpoint of Keith. The walk starts in Reidhaven Square where you head down toward the building in the middle (what used to be the public toilets/bus shelter) then take a right when you get on to Moss Street. Walk along to the end and at the last house carefully cross the road - it can be busy. Walk round the right of Dusty’s customs shop and you will see Old Den Road to the right lined with 8

trees. Start walking along there till you pass the last house (Innesfree) and up to the left you will see the path on the left to take you in to the Den woods. Follow this path right through the woods for about ¾ mile. Please note if you have a dog and they are off the lead - there is a section that is close to the road. You will come to a signpost to the right for Falls of Tarnash and Dunnyduff woods. Take this path going over the wee steen bridge and keep going and you will soon come to the Falls. Make sure you explore a bit round here and take plenty of photos on a nice day as it’s a lovely spot for a picnic and even a paddle. Get back on to the path and there is a sign post up to the left to Dunnyduff woods. There is a wee bit of elevation here but nothing too taxing. Follow the path which does zig zag a little and keep in the path where you will come to a wee bridge with a handrail. Go straight on here and there is another wee bridge with a handrail: just keep going over the wee bridge following the well-made path. You will come to a bit of

clearing where there is a great viewpoint of Keith and Newmill to the left. The path continues and you will eventually come to steps to descend till you reach a forestry track - take a left here. You will come through the carpark and on to the minor road. Here you can take a left and follow the minor road back or just across the road from the carpark there is an opening and a path that runs alongside the Burn of Drum. This path can be very overgrown in the summer but it’s a great place to see wildlife such as red squirrel and birds as well as lots of wildflowers. I also spotted a buzzard along here too. Whatever way you decide to go you will come to a bridge to go over and you head up the road till you come to a junction. Take a right here on to Edindiach Road heading back in to Keith. The road turns to the left on to Balloch Road and you will see the square ahead and the end of the walk.

LOCAL MATTERS

Keith The Friendly Town

H

alf way between Aberdeen and Inverness on the A96 you will find the friendly town of Keith. Historically in Banffshire, Keith is proud of its heritage and culture. Keith is the first Scots Toun having won that accolade in 2014.

Flags displaying the Toun’s favourite Scots words can be found down Mid St and along the A96 in Fife-Keith during the summer months. As you walk down the street I hope you appreciate the artwork in some of the empty shop windows. A project funded by Scotland Loves Local allowed collaboration with the areas primary schools to come up with fabulous artwork and others have collages of our favourite Scots words. Although Covid has been a challenge to us all, Keith has not let that stop progress. A number of new shops and businesses have been opening up in the town in the last few months.

Amazing specialist motorcycle builders and fabricators Dusty’s Customs have opened on the A96, you can’t miss them as you arrive from Huntly. Fortnightly bike nights have been a real hit. TEXTILES

Keith Kilt and Textile Centre B ehind the scenes of the gift shop at 147 Mid St Keith is the Keith Kilt & Textile Centre, offering the only SQA approved customised award in kiltmaking in the world.

August sees the launch of three new tartans which have been designed at the centre by the voluntary Chair Linda Gorn and woven by House of Edgar at The Isle Mill in Keith part of the McNaughton Group. As Keith is proud of its Banffshire heritage the first new tartan is proudly called ‘Shades of Banffshire’, to acknowledge the work done by the Lord Lieutenant and his deputies. The process began with our recently retired Lord Lieutenant Claire Russell. The colours chosen to be incorporated in the tartan are Black, representing the Aberdeen Angus cattle at Ballindalloch, the home of Claire Russell. Blue represents the Royal visits. White and pale gold, represents the coastline and a dark gold for the whisky which is so 14 important to Banffshire.

The second tartan is ‘Shades of Moray’ the colours of this one being grey for the dolphins in the Moray Firth and white for the shore. Gold is the colour of the famous Copper Stills with a green line running through representing the Forestry. The third and final tartan being launched is ‘Shades of Brodgar’ the standing stones in Orkney. The colours are from the sunset at the standing stones and the pink of the curly dodies (clover). These tartans can be ordered but will have limited availability. Contact the Keith Kilt and Textile Centre for details on 01542 886846. Of course if you would like to learn to make your own kilt there are still kilt making courses available.

CHARITY: TOUCH DOWN

NEW INDOOR ARENA

“If you don’t like the weather in Scotland, wait five minutes” is the advice of a popular saying. Now at Touchdown Memorial Home for Horses, successful horse charity and therapy centre in the Moray hills, you do not need to wait as their new indoor school is ready to receive you: throwing open its doors in a Grand Opening on Saturday 2nd October. As well as the chance to see the indoor school and plan how you will use it to school your horses and have lessons, clinics and rallies, there will be a variety of interesting demonstrations both horse related and general. We hope to have the Mounted Police demonstrating with their amazing brave horses, one of whom, Lauder, is cared for here at Touchdown in his retirement. We also plan to have a demonstration of Intelligent Horsemanship and of horse physiotherapy, all essential tools used in the rehabilitation of rescue horses at Touchdown. There will also be plenty to see and do for non horsey friends and family: we have invited speakers from the RAF, beer and whisky production, stunt and vaulting riders and the fire brigade. Most importantly there will be ample food and drink available: tea and homemade cake; hot food and something

Lifestyle MAG

sweet. The horses themselves will be the stars of the show: guided tours of the site and stables will be available where you can meet the amazing horses who all have their own story to tell of hardship overcome. You can see the work the horses do in Equine Facilitated Therapy and meet ex battery hens now working as therapy chickens, Lidwina and Ceitidh. They may let you cuddle them! You may see part wildcat Aoife who despite her wild looks is very affectionate. On and around the site are buzzards, kestrels, badgers, deer and red squirrels. Enjoy the amazing views on a nature walk. The team at Touchdown Memorial Home for Horses are keen to welcome you. For further details please see their website www.touchdownmhh.org or visit their Facebook page Touchdown Memorial Home for Horses.

DE-CLUTTERING

ROSIE BARRON IS THE TIDY COO A Professional Organiser, who works with clients to help them Declutter and Organise their homes and live a more relaxed life. A Platinum KonMari Consultant and member of APDO (the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers), Rosie lives in Aberdeenshire with her husband, 4 Home Educated children, 8 ponies, 5 dogs, 3 cats, 2 bunnies, chickens, ducks and fish which all Spark Joy.

S

o far in this series, we’ve covered a general overview of getting organised, clothing, books, and now we are on to Paperwork. I love doing paperwork with my clients because I can see what a huge difference it makes to their lives. It’s often a massive mental barrier and once it’s cleared, the relief is amazing.

20

For Papers, you will need to find yourself a flat, clear space to work in. A table that you can spread out on to is ideal, but I often end up on the floor in my client’s homes. Gather papers from all over your home and bring them into one space. In this initial sort through, we are making 4 piles. Recycling, Shredding, Filing and Pending.

Images: Laura Walter Photography

Some types of paper that you might find to make decisions on are: Reference Papers - Will you refer to them again? Particularly for courses you go on. Manuals - Do you still have the original item? Do you still need the paper manual, or would you look for the information online? Guarantees - Check whether they are still in date and whether you have the necessary receipt to go with them. You will need a file for this with the manuals filed in order that they expire. Then every time you come to file a new one, you can check to see whether or not there are any that you can discard. Household Bills - If you’ve paid them, do you need them any longer? Magazine clippings and recipes - Are truly going to use them, or are they just one more thing cluttering your brain? Once you have discarded what you can (remembering that it is always easier to organise when you have fewer things), it is time to File. I make 4 broad files for this: Frequent Use. Anything that needs to be referred

to frequently and that you will need easy access to refer to. It might include reference papers such as recipes, or paperwork relating to pets, or manuals. A small selection of easy to reach folders is needed for this. Important Documents. Birth & Marriage certificates for example. I have these in a grab-and-go folder for us to grab in case of a quick evacuation, a left over from when we lived overseas. It is worth investing in a fire proof folder. Deep archive. A subset of important documents and is anything that needs to be kept indefinitely, but does not need frequent or easy access, such as building warrants. This should be kept in the main body of the house where the temperature and humidity is stable, but it can be kept out of the way, perhaps somewhere like the top of a cupboard. Again, a fireproof folder is useful for this. Limited time. Anything that you need to keep, but for only a set length of time (such as tax documentation). For this limited time paperwork, put an entire tax year together – everything that might be needed for referral, and then file it with the date of destruction on it. Usually 7 years in the UK, although I am not an accountant or financial adviser, so do take advice on this if needed. Then when that 7 years is up, the entire folder can just be pulled out and destroyed without needing to check it again.

Lifestyle MAG

Finally, deal with your pending papers. Take a look at your pending pile make a note of the next action that you need to take for it. Do any task that takes less than 2 minutes. Tasks that take longer than two minutes, plan time in your diary when you will do it, or have it on your list of things that need to be done when you next have a moment. Deal with Future papers. Your papers are now organised, your bills are up to date and you’re feeling (rightly) pretty pleased with yourself. How are you going to keep it that way? First, move as much as you can online. Unsubscribe from catalogues, and open your post over the recycling (I often collect my post from the postman, and the junk mail goes straight into my recycling bin, it doesn’t even enter the house). Keep a pair of shredding scissors by the recycling to deal with any information that you don’t want landing in the bin. Open all of your mail every day and see what needs to be acted upon and what needs to be filed. Put a system near where the mail comes in so that you have Action, Pending and File tray and then put aside time every week to take a few minutes to go through it.

he Hairst is a unique annual harvest festival which takes place in Huntly to celebrate the food and traditions of Aberdeenshire. The event, which this year takes place on Saturday 4th September, is free to attend and provides something for all the family to enjoy. The programme includes an extended Farmer’s Market with over 50 stalls showcasing the best local produce, cookery demonstrations and competitions, including The World Stovies Championship, and much more. During the event, attendees can also look forward to browsing the best local handcrafts at the Huntly Crafters craft fair to be held in The Gordon Arms, cheering on competitors in the sausage eating competition at Huntly Football Club, and learning how to make the tastiest cocktails at Whiskies of Scotland. On Sunday 5th September, The Big Picnic at Leith Hall and Gardens provides a day for the family and lots of activities for the kids to enjoy. This year, the Hairst will also showcase an online ‘Meet Our Producers’ week from 30th August to 3rd September, where we take the opportunity to highlight some of the great local producers in and around Huntly.

Ideal if you fancy increasing your competitive edge in the World Stovies Championships during the Hairst event! On Tuesday, Coldwells Organic Farm will show us how flour is made, and the Honesty Bakehouse will provide a bread making demonstration, followed by top tips from Diane Ingram for making the perfect oatcakes. It’s also curry night for the kids, with curry kits available from The Square Deal. As mid week approaches, we look to sweeten things up. Rizza’s will share their story and tell us how to make ice cream, and also invite everyone to create their own flavour of ice cream and invent their ultimate ice cream sundae in an online competition. To win a years supply of ice cream. On Friday, the eve of the Hairst, Neep & Okra Kitchen will share tips online for pickling your own beetroot and we enjoy Friday lunch with the Artisan Growers hosted by Deveron Projects. See our website for more details of these events and to book places. We hope we’ve given you a flavour of the great programme the Hairst offers and we really look forward to welcoming you to Huntly! BOOK REVIEWS

Old Portnockie, Findochty & Portessie by Douglas G Lockhart I was asked if I would consider including a new local history book in this issue of Lifestyle. Book reviews are not something we’ve done very much of but as I certainly thought it would be of interest to you, my readers, I agreed and was duly sent a couple of copies, one of which you can win on the competition page in the usual way. I thoroughly enjoyed leafing through the fifty plus pages of images and facts of a bygone age.

a time which, I’m sure youngsters now would think and it’s hard even for me to believe, is only just over a hundred years ago. How things have changed and not all for the better: amenities have already come and gone like the outdoor pools and of course the coast railway line opened in 1886 but gone by 1968.

I love looking at old photographs and the pictures in this book tell a wonderful story of

I certainly enjoyed the book and I’m sure you will too. It will be available for saIe in local shops.

ow for something completely different: I just happened to have a chat with the gentleman who was distributing the lighthouses for CLAN, when he brought our ones to Keith. He happened to ask me if there were any bookshops in Keith and we struck up a conversation, this led to him giving me a copy of his debut novel, Eye for an Eye. I had to admit I was hooked when he told me it was a thriller, as I do love a thriller. Unfortunately due to my busy schedule trying to bring the magazine to all you wonderful readers, I haven’t had time to actually read it yet. What I have done is read the reviews, from a very varied audience it would seem, and they all express similar sentiments of how difficult this book is to put down once you start. It kept them

captivated and entertained throughout, moving at a good pace. All the reviews praise the writer on his depth of knowledge of the subject matter, as his descriptions transport them, they are so detailed. Lifestyle is always happy to help new businesses/entrepreneurs and I’m happy to give Roy Burnett of Aberdeen’s book a mention. He very much supports local so look out for it in your local bookshops or email him roy.burnett1983@gmail.com. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in.

A Fine Day Out in Lossiemouth!

T

hose of us fortunate to live in Lossie share a secret. We know just how much there is to see and do in and around the town, even though we can’t get to the East Beach just now. But we can’t afford to keep this secret to ourselves. According to a recent study, commissioned by the Lossiemouth Business Association, the loss of the East Beach Bridge cost the town £1.5m in lost revenue, and that was before Covid came into the equation. Something needed to be done! In December, the LBA won a £5k grant from the Scotland Loves Local fund, for a campaign to highlight all the fabulous things there are to do here, to encourage people to come to Lossie and spend a whole day here. Masterminded by local marketer, Alison Read, the campaign is based around a series of suggested itineraries for local day trippers to make the most of their visit and enjoy ‘A Fine Day Out’! For example, how about A Family Day Out full of ice creams, play parks and rockpools? Or A Natural Day Out spotting ospreys and dolphins? Or perhaps afternoon tea and a stroll round the shops on A Leisurely Day Out is more your style? A visit to Moray’s zero waste refill shop The Re:store is a must. Shop, dine and unwind at Marina Quay with a wonderful outlook, browse the wonderful collections at MY ladies boutique then maybe pair with beautiful glasses or sunglasses from McClintock’s Optical Styling Boutique. If it’s that special day you are shopping for then you must book a visit to With this Dress, you will be treated like a princess.

Younger Day Spa Ltd will ensure you are pampered from head to toe too. The guests or Mother of the Bride are well catered for at Unique along by the promenade. Your appetite is well catered for too, choose to sit out on the promenade at the Salt Cellar for lunch or evening meal, with seafood to die for. If you need to work up that appetite then a surfing lesson from Donald at the New Wave Surf School might just do the trick. If golf’s your game then play a round at Moray Golf Club then sit and enjoy an equally stunning view from the Golf View Hotel on the outskirts of town, check out facebook for their menu and pictures of fabulous looking desserts.

TRAVEL

NAVIGATING THE TRAFFIC LIGHT RAINBOW

W

ell another month passes and another incredulous number of changes to travel at government

level.

We started off with the news that anyone who had been “double jabbed” would be able to travel back from an amber-listed country without having to quarantine…. This was short-lived unfortunately and a few days later they added another “colour: in the traffic light spectrum, “amber plus”. This meant that if you were double jabbed, you DID have to isolate on return. But isn’t that the same as red? Oh wait, it means that they think it could turn red… or is that just green watch? Confused? Don’t feel bad. We have a team deciphering this code that even the Mayans would have been proud of, and we can still sometimes draw a confused look. I say sometimes… So, here it is. My guide to navigating the ubiquitous travel traffic lights. Just please bear in mind that these are the rules for RETURNING into the UK, and each country will have its own entry requirements too – just because a country is green, doesn’t mean you can travel there. It just means that if you do/can, restrictions are slightly less onerous! 38

Green An antigen test within 3 days of arrival back in the UK. Also known as a lateral flow test, however you cannot use NHS tests – you will need to get one while in resort. A passenger locator form should also be completed within 48 hours of your arrival time within the UK. A PCR test should also be completed within 2 days of arrival back into the UK. It is expected (but not guaranteed) that any changes to green countries would be given fair warning.

Green watch Pretty much identical to the green list, however the status may change at short notice, meaning if you haven’t been double jabbed, you may need to isolate upon return, and/or follow the guidance for Amber countries.

Amber for those who are double vaccinated Follow green advice. Certification will be required before travel so make sure you get this in plenty of time. Also, you will have had to have the second dose of your vaccine 14 days before you return back into the UK.

Amber for those who are not As green, plus you will need to isolate in your own home for 10 days upon return. You will also need to take a second PCR test on day 8 of your return. Can be changed to Amber plus with little or no notice.

Amber Plus As amber, however there is no concession for those who have been fully vaccinated. It also may change to red at short notice.

At the time of writing, an additional challenge to Scotland is that any PCR tests have to be from a specific supplier, and can’t just be ones you have found online or in a local pharmacy. The name you currently need to look out for is CTM. Your travel company should be able to give you more details, so if you are unsure, simply contact the company you booked through for their latest advice. For information on entry requirements into each country, follow FCDO advice which can be found at https://www.gov.uk/foreigntravel-advice.

www.invernesstravel.co.uk or head to @invernesstravel on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Red You must quarantine for 10 days in a sanctioned hotel. These currently cost around £1700. You will need to provide negative PCR tests on day 2 and 8, and can only leave once your result show negative.

MUSIC

DON’T LET THE MUSIC DIE

T

he music industry has been hit especially hard through Covid. Venues, recording studios and music retail outlets were all closed and even as they begin to open, with socially distanced performances essential it has been nigh impossible for musicians to return to a financially viable situation.

The Zebecks

With no live venues open, many of our wonderful musicians turned to online performances and kept many of us entertained during those long months of lockdown. I know I certainly listened to many of them and appreciated them keeping me sane(well nearly), I love my music as I’m sure many of you do too. Many also took the opportunity to let their creativity flow and a number of new songs have been produced.

download them and show your support. What a sad place it would be without music so let’s show them how much we appreciate them.

Lifestyle has featured a number of musicians over the last few years and they now all need our support more than ever.

In no particular order first up we have my local Keith Quine, (no bias intended) the lovely Amy Papiransky who has released a new single and music video Summertime Blues https://ffm. to/summertimeblues.

Here are a few who have either released or are releasing new albums, EPs or singles in the next few weeks. Please give them a listen and

Amy Papiransky

Amy has recently been championed by her idol KT Tunstall who is quoted saying “Amy is a brilliant new Scottish female talent” I couldn’t agree more. Amy has been heard on BBC Radio.

The Zebecks only featured recently, a young

44

four piece band from Elgin, who are going from strength to strength. Releasing their debut EP ‘Out of the Dust’, hot on the heels of their single Violet. Now available to download see their website https://linktr.ee/thezebecks. They are delighted to be getting back to live gigs and have already played in Elgin and will be back supporting Skylights at Downtown USA in November. They can’t wait for their Aberdeen debut on the 17th September supporting Ded Rabbit at Drummonds.

Ron Jappy - www.ronjappy.com Another fabulous artist/musician previously featured in Lifestyle when he released his wonderful debut solo album Vincular. Born and brought up in Findochty, Ron now stays in Glasgow and is very much part of that music scene. Obviously a long time away from live gigs but delighted to be back performing. Ron has just released his new single “A Place Called Home” featuring Ainsley Hamill.

Algorithm Featured only recently, Algorithm formed in 2020 and produced their amazing single and video “Left Unsaid” They certainly haven’t let the grass grow and now another single and video has been released “Off The Floor” https://algorithmband.bandcamp. com/releases. Now working on their album, due to release next year, watch out for that.

Danny Mortimer

another Elgin musician certainly wasn’t idle during lockdown. Apart from the fact that his lovely wife Amy is due to deliver their first son any time now, Danny also kept us entertained, released his fabulous double sided single “Just Like Before/Another Light” and also recorded his version of David Bowie’s classic “heroes” along with a music video of footage submitted by many of you showing how you coped through lockdown. The song and video received a lot of attention from the media and rightly so. Watch out for Danny’s next release coming soon “Through the Sound” https://www.dannymortimer.co.uk Also wishing him all the best in his new role of Dad.

Chris Grant www.chrisgrantmusic.co.uk Unable to perform his music, Chris went to work in the Aberlour Co-op during lockdown, lucky staff and shoppers were regularly entertained by their resident maestro who always had a ready smile and a funny story to brighten their day. Chris also had a regular live gig on facebook playing requests and entertaining many, including me, many a Saturday night in lockdown. His new album “Treading Water” is now available and Chris will appreciate your support if you can make a purchase.

The Roov www.instagram.comtheroov/?hl=en Performing a short set during lockdown at the virtual Belladrum Tartan Festival was a highlight for the Lossie band. It was of course a disappointment not to play live as they had done for the past two years. They also managed to release their single “Boys” and they are recording their debut album which features all new songs barring a firm “fan favourite”. All these artists have entertained many of us during lockdown and they want nothing more than to get back to doing what they love, performing live. Until that gets back to normal levels please do all you can to support them, download their music, go to their facebook live gigs and donate to their tip jar. Don’t let the music die. 45

COMMUNITY: ENTERTAINMENT

Elgin Town Hall

W

hen Moray Council announced they were looking to close some local halls in early 2018, with the suggestion that some of them could be taken over by the Community, the group Elgin Town Hall for the Community was formed to look into taking over the running of Elgin Town Hall. Taking on the biggest hall in Moray would be no small undertaking and convincing Moray Council that a new group formed from the various hall user groups would be the hardest, so the welcome announcement on the 26th July that a two year lease had been signed and that, from August, Elgin Town Hall would be in community hands was something to be celebrated by the group and the wider community.

48

Since getting the keys in August 2018 the hall has seen a wide variety of well and not so well known acts passing through its doors. Acts such as Skipinnish, Barbara Dickson, The Red Hot Chili Pipers along with Comedy Legend Jack Dee, not to mention two of Scotland’s rising comedians Jim Smith and Gary Meikle. Added to this the hall has continued to support local theatre, dance and music groups, thus allowing these talented performers a place to shine. With the hall going from strength to strength it came as a big shock in March 2020 when Covid19 struck and suddenly there was nothing and the future of the hall fell into doubt. Since the Covid19 restrictions have been in place the hall has been following all Government advice closely and with the help of the local environmental health team we have been able to keep our doors open throughout to the benefit of the community. The hall has been used by the Blood Transfusion Service, a base for the Covid Test Centre, a place of worship and, as restrictions

eased, we even managed to put on a couple of Christmas Shows by Lossie Entertainment Academy to bring at least some Christmas spirit. With the announcement by the First Minister of Scotland that the 9th August 2021 would see the majority of restrictions being removed now is the time to look forward to welcoming the people of Moray and further afield back to the hall. Starting in August we have The Circus of Horrors with their Reborn, reVAMPED & Rockin Show, a show which is certainly not for the squeamish or faint of heart !!! September and the hall really comes alive with the fantastic ‘Come What May’ - the Ultimate Tribute to the Moulin Rouge, an all singing, all dancing extravaganza which lets you enter the secret world of the greatest movie-musicals of all time featuring the return of Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowall to the hall. Also in September we have Bingo Revolution, a fun packed evening of laughing, dancing, dabbing and some life changing prizes. YOUR U3A

NEEDS YOU Ask not what your u3a can do for you but what you can do for your u3a!

T

he u3a came into being as the University of the 3rd Age. Recently, however, it has been recognized that this suggests both academia and exclusivity when it was designed to be open to all. The acronym has been kept - though a more meaningful title could be Using the 3rd Age. Open to all, the u3a is drawn mainly from retired people or those in part-time work with time on their hands. Generally ages range from 55 into the 90’s. Its main aims are to foster friendship, a sense of community and belonging – helping to lift people out of loneliness and isolation, while promoting good mental and physical health. What does the u3a offer? It offers various activities - some energetic, some sedentary, some cerebral, some dexterous but all fun. Opportunities are there to continue to learn, pick up new knowledge and skills, and teach others – no exams involved! The u3a

organization is run by members for members, each local u3a being autonomous, responsible for its own finances and how it functions. The Elgin and District u3a offers a diverse range of activities including language classes, ukulele, walking, singing, books, film, jigsaws, cooking and more. The list of activities could be endless but does depend on members coming forward to lead groups. There is a hard-working committee, most of whom lead groups too. How often, where and when groups meet is a matter for the members of each to decide. A full list of activities can be found on our website https://u3asites. org.uk/elgin and this will tell you how to join. At the moment, some groups are meeting via Zoom because of the Covid pandemic but now more groups are venturing back. For retirees, people moving into the area, those who may be coping with bereavement, family illness or whose families are distant, the u3a has been seen as a lifesaver giving members something to look forward to.

This is what we can offer you. Interested? Then join us at Elgin and District u3a. 50

A hearing loop (sometimes called an audio induction loop) is a special type of sound system

for use by people with hearing aids. The hearing loop provides a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to ‘T’ (Telecoil) setting. The hearing loop consists of a microphone to pick up the spoken word; an amplifier which processes the signal which is then sent through the final piece; the loop cable, a wire placed around the perimeter of a specific area i.e. a meeting room, a church, a service counter etc to act as an antenna that radiates the magnetic signal to the hearing aid. Every reception, point of sale, training room and boardroom should have a hearing loop for people with a hearing impairment.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL

ELECTIONS

C

ommunity Council Elections are about to take place in Moray. Elections take place every four years.

Do you know who your community representative is? Do you care about your community? Would you like to know more about how you could represent your community? Community Councils are the most local tier of statutory representation in Scotland. Moray Council are required by statute to consult with Community Councils about planning applications and licensing matters. Other organisations also consult regularly e.g. Scot Gov, NHS, Fire and Police Community Councils are the link between your community, Moray Council and partners, helping to make the authority aware of the opinions and needs of your community. Community Councils normally meet monthly to discuss matters of concern in the community. Anything from major planning applications pending to pot holes and dog mess are discussed. Community Councils also organise and involve themselves in many community activities.

58

If you think you could liaise with your local community to fairly express the diverse opinions of the people in your community then you are the ideal candidate. All Community Council meetings are open to the public, although during Covid meetings have been held virtually. The intention would be to revert to in person meetings after the elections, but with the option to hold virtual meetings if necessary e.g. in extreme weather events. If you wish to be considered to represent your community you must be a resident in the area and be on the electoral register. What a fabulous selection of prizes on offer once again for my wonderful readers. I know I say this every time but with the amazing features you have to read in this issue and some excellent prizes from the businesses you are once again spoiled for choice. If you all get your entries in quickly I will draw the £50 voucher, generously offered by NEOS, on the 10th September and then the lucky winner can go out and visit all these talented people and know you have at least £50 to spend. The Sewing Shop Fochabers have once again generously offered a fabulous sewing goody bag, if you are running low in bits n bobs this might be just for you.

If you have already read about all the wonderful musicians, on page 42, that we are so lucky to have in the North East, you will know they have all been busy recording. You will, I’m sure, be delighted to hear and be hoping to win, the music bundle that they are all generously donating to. Downloads, CD’s and more will be sent to the lucky winner of this absolutely amazing prize.
