COLLECTED STUPIDITY - I DON’T FEEL RIGHT.....By ROBBIE TANSEL I’m convinced that there’s something not quite right with me at the moment. Most of my friends are probably not at

all surprised about that. I mean things are not physically right with me on this occasion though, not my other issues

that people have helpfully identified for me. I’ve been sick for about the last eight weeks which is pretty unusual for me. It’s not a huge amount more than a heavy cold that becomes heavier every couple of weeks, generally developing into a full scale man flu. I think it may actually be Chinese man flu as I developed it at about the time I was in China. Just to be clear it’s much worse than the standard strain of the man flu. On return from China I had a nose that was permanently running, I had no energy, and to top it off a very painful toothache. Like most men I decided I’d just wait until it went away but eventually I got to a point where I booked myself in to visit the doctor followed by the dentist. The doctor told me I had a virus, possibly the flu and

there was nothing she could do about it; I’d just need to wait until I felt better. The dentist took an x-ray of my teeth, told me there was nothing wrong with my teeth, that the problem was a sinus infection that was causing pain in the teeth, and wrote me a prescription for antibiotics, before recommending I go and get some decongestant medication as well. Bit of a worry when a dentist does more to solve your medical issues than a doctor! As if that wasn’t bad enough, about a week after stopping taking ten pills a day, I also developed a nasty rash all over my body. Again I decided that there wasn’t much point going to the doctor (probably justified considering my recent experiences; I possibly should have headed straight to the dentist). After about a day and a half of

uncontrollable itching, and an inability to sleep, I decided in the middle of the night to head for the hospital and see what the problem was. The doctor came to the conclusion that I was having an allergic reaction. I’ve never been allergic to anything in my life, and couldn’t think of anything I’d come in contact with (food, shampoo, detergent etc) that was different to what I ever encounter. I probably should have gone to the dentist for a second opinion. He would have diagnosed a broken arm and put me in plaster. I did accept the doctor’s generous offer of Phenergan to deal with my allergy issues. Zzzzzzzzzzz. I’m not normally a fan of medication but this stuff did the trick. I’m so concerned about my health that I’m even considering changing my diet to include food that is good for me, rather than food that tastes good. The other reason I feel that there is something not right with me is a little bit sensitive. I’ve been finding recently that when I wipe my bot bot after number twos, I sometimes accidentally get a little bit of faecal matter on my hand. I have a few theories as to why this may be happening. Number one possibility is that somehow my bottom is further away from my hand that it used to be. This would indicate that either my arm has gotten shorter, or possibly my bottom has gotten bigger. Bottom growth would seem like the most likely possibility usually, but I actually lost weight while in China (you try being a guy who relies on hot chips for most of their daily sustenance and then spend two weeks eating not much more than rice and vegetables.) A second possibility is that I’m having flexibility issues. This seems like a high possibility. I’m getting to an age where I make noises when I stand up, when I sit down, or perform a variety of seemingly simple body movements. t’s very possible that I just can’t turn my body far enough to reach as far as I need to anymore. One more idea I’ve considered is that it’s just a lack of attention. It’s a bit scary to think that I’m at a point in my life where I’m not managing the concentration to wipe my backside effectively. If I can’t perform this basic manoeuvre, should I really be allowed behind the wheel of a car? It’s fair to say I’m getting old. I think it’s unlikely that anyone will want to shake hands with me in the near future (I do wash my hands) but you can still email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

LOOK WHO’S IN TOWN

He arrived in the blazing sun just before 12noon Saturday and with Father Christmas hitting Mount Gambier’s main streets, it was official - the festive season has begun. In his traditional place, at the end of the annual NF McDonnell & Sons Mount Gambier Christmas Parade, after a wide array of floats had made the trip from the Crouch Street corner to Vansittart Park, Santa’s arrival thrilled the young and young at heart. From superheroes to clowns, from angels to pirates, schools, sporting clubs, community groups and local businesses added to the festive spirit with their 2017 floats. This is just a selection of images from the weekend, with a full gallery of every float and band on our facebook page. Results of the float and band competitions willappear in next week’s Lifestyle1.

AT A GLANCE

MAYOR ENCOURAGES COMMUNITY GROUP TO APPLY FOR GRANTS Now is the time for community groups and sporting clubs in the Wattle Range Council region to decide which projects and events they will submit for potential funding in round two of Council’s Financial Assistance Grants program. Applications for second round funding in Council’s 2017/18 program open on Wednesday,

NEW EXHIBITIONS LAUNCHED The Riddoch Art Gallery launched two exhibitions The Patient, curated by Bec Dean and Future-Future? by Keith Armstrong last Friday. The Patient consists of 12 art installations and is an exhibition which engages with the complex and challenging aspects of human existence, living with illness, adapting to bodily change and approaching death. The Future-

December 13, and will be accepted until January 19, 2018. Wattle Range Council Mayor Peter Gandolfi urged local groups to consider making application, with funding up to $2000 available to eligible groups. Earlier in the financial year at its September meeting, Council granted more than $28,000 to 18 separate community and sporting groups in the first round of grants. Mayor Gandolfi recently met with Mount Burr United Football Club President Adam Gardiner (pictured) to present him with a cheque for funds awarded in this first round. The club received $2000 in the Sport & Recreation category for maintenance and upgrade works to existing irrigation lines at the Mount Burr sports ground.

Future? exhibition is inspired by Keith Armstrong’s recent artist residency in South Africa supported by the Program for Innovation in Artform Development and local community NGO Qala Phelang Tala (Start Living Green!). POPULAR AUTHOR LAUNCHES NEW BOOK IN MOUNT GAMBIER Tricia Stringer is a bestselling author of rural romance books, one of which, Between the Vines, was set in the Coonawarra wine region. Her latest release Come Rain or Shine has just hit the shelves and she launched the book at the Mount Gambier Library last week. Come Rain or Shine is Tricia’s ninth book. NANGWARRY POOL UPDATE Works have now commenced on the concrete repairs and resurfacing of the Nangwarry pool. The demolition works started earlier this month and includes removal of tiles around the large pool and the dividing wall from the toddler pool. The replacement of the tiles and new rendering will be undertaken this month and the pool surface will then be prepared for painting. It is expected that painting will be completed during December. Once the painting works are completed, the pools will be filled and the upgrade to the chlorine system will commence. At this stage, Wattle Range Council anticpates the works will be completed in late February or early March. There are no plans to open the pool for this swimming season.

LIONESS CLUB FUNDRAISER A HUGE SUCCESS The Lioness Club of Mount Gambier recently held a Garden Day fundraiser, at President Gayle’s home ‘Tower View’. It was a very successful day and the club thanks the Mount Gambier community for their support. There were a few highlights during the day, one being a Scarecrow competition, which attracted nine entries. The winner, determined by popular vote, was Mulga Street Primary School. The scarecrow was made entirely of recycled materials. Patrons were entertained by the Mount Gambier Ukulele Blue Group and 3 Scottish Pipers, while the patrons enjoyed a Devonshire tea and explored the beautiful garden. A lunch time sausage sizzle proved popular, made possible with the help of the Lions Club of Mount Gambier for their assistance. The Lioness Club of Mount Gambier is now focussed on running its annual Christmas Raffle and will be gift wrapping in Mount Gambier Central two weeks before Christmas. Hamilton and everywhere in between, breakfasts and lunch events will bring the issue into the spotlight. Southern Grampians Shire Council and Western District Health Service (WDHS) have once again joined forces to be part of the White Ribbon campaign with a luncheon this Thursday. The event, to be held at Alexandra House, Hamilton, will feature an address from Victoria Police Superintendent, Peter Greaney who will provide both local and international perspectives on family violence and a presentation from Natalie Russell, VicHealth Principal Program Officer, who will discuss VicHealth’s work in supporting a whole of community approach to family violence All funds raised from ticket sales will be donated directly back to White Ribbon. Chief Executives Michael Tudball and Rohan Fitzgerald said they are pleased to be working together to highlight this important issue and help challenge attitudes and behaviours that unfortunately still exist in our community. “Devastatingly, over 12 months, on average, one woman is killed every week in Australia as a result of intimate partner violence. In the Southern Grampians Shire, there were 378 reported incidents of family violence in 2015/16 – that’s more than one a day,” Rohan Fitzgerald WDHS Chief Executive said. “Violence against women arises from a complex interaction of social factors. Our role as large public institutions is to identify primary prevention strategies that address this multifaceted problem, to help promote healthier relationships in our community. We are holding this event to help break the silence and raise awareness around violence against women and more importantly mobilise the community to address this serious issue. This is one of a number of strategies that our organisation participates in to build individuals’ capacity and the ability of our community as a whole, to stand up and speak out.” Council CEO Michael Tudball says we all have a role to play to stop violence against women. “Violence against women is never a private issue. It impacts not only women but also families and the wider community,” he said. “Silence and inaction will let this violence continue. We want people to know that it is violence against

women is unacceptable, it is never the victim’s fault, help is always available and if you see something you should definitely say something. People need to know that they can make a difference; bringing an end to men’s violence against women will take a whole of community approach.” Residents and visitors to Hamilton will notice a display at the Melville Oval gates this week – one white ribbon for each of the 378 incidents of family violence reported in the shire in the 2015/16 year. “We hope this visual representation of the issue in our region brings home the magnitude of the problem we are facing. It’s not just something that happens in the metro areas, it’s happening here and now,” Mr Tudball said. Tickets for the Hamilton lunch, being held Thursday at Alexandra House, are $35 and can be purchased online at www.wdhs.net.au or by calling (03)5551 8540. In Mount Gambier, the Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group (LCDVS) will again fire up the barbecue at Frew Park on Friday for the annual White Ribbon Breakfast. Held annually since 2011, the free community breakfast recognises the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. All community members are invited to come along between 7:30 and 9:30 am to enjoy free eggs, bacon, sausages, and juice, with free barista coffee kindly supplied by Metro Bakery & Café. This event is also generously sponsored by Soroptimist International, and the Sunset Kitchen. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against

Women, November 25, also marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. The 16 Days of Activism end on 10 December (International Human Rights Day), and tackles the global prevalence of men’s violence against women and girls. states “One in three Australian women has experienced physical or sexual violence in her lifetime,” chairperson Sonya Mezinec said. “Communities play an important role in creating positive change so come along, enjoy a freshly cooked hot breakfast, and support our goal to work towards the prevention of violence against women in your community.” If you know a woman experiencing violence, speak up. Ask her if you can help. LCDVS assists approximately 400 women and children who are experiencing current, high risk violence by a male perpetrator per year, approximately 40% of these are under 18 years of age. What service providers know is that the majority of women who are experiencing domestic violence in our communities do not seek assistance and continue to live in high risk, volatile situations, so what the service sees is the tip of the iceberg. The Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service supports women in the Limestone Coast. They can be contacted on (08)8723 1385 or free call 1800 631 385. GRATITUDE FOR FARMERS IN NATIONWIDE DAY OF CELELBRATION National Agriculture Day was celebrated on November 21 and was all about fostering connections between the man on the land and his city cousins. Agriculture supports 1.6 million jobs from the city to the bush, in areas like retail, logistics, processing and many more. Events were held throughout the Limestone Coast and South West Victoria, ranging from lunch in Wratonbully to children’s storytime at the Mount Gambier Library.

AT A GLANCE

MARKET SQUARE CONTINUES ITS REVITALISATION A new lawn for ball sports will soon add to the amazing facilities at Market Square, in MacDonnell Street, Naracoorte. With a wonderful playground, skate park, basketball court, and dog park already established, as well as plenty of parking, the Market Square is a little gem of fun, perfect for those sunny days ahead. If you haven’t visited Naracoorte in a while you will be shocked by the transformation. The latest redevelopment has seen sections of the old netball courts that have disintegrated removed and converted back to lawn. This project was completed using recycled street sweepings and will be seeded, planted with runners and watered to establish lawn.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF LAKE HAMILTON As part of the 40th anniversary celebrations for Lake Hamilton, Southern Grampians Shire Council ran a photo competition. Colin Stubbs took out the Favourite Memory category with a snapshot of his grandchildren (top), while Darren Mulley, who entered a number of images into the competition, was adjudged winner of the Best Image category, with the judges selecting his early morning capture of Lake Hamilton (bottom).

GALLERY ATTRACTS A RECORD NUMBER OF VISITORS Bordertown’s Walkway Gallery has recorded its highest annual attendance figure in history. A Tatiara District Council report has revealed that 17,429 people visited the gallery between July 2016 and June 2017, a new record and 8000 higher than the previous year. Last year the gallery’s visitor numbers were boosted by the significant Ben Quilty exhibition on loan from the Art Gallery of South Australia which attracted more than 7000 people over 36 days, making it the highest attended exhibitions in the gallery’s short history. “It’s not just exhibitions that have seen an increase, numbers at our public programs and general events are proving consistently strong,” gallery director Naomi Fallon said. More than half of visitors came from outside the district and various programs in the gallery welcoming different audiences – including children and families – had contributed to a change in perception about the gallery. In addition to the expanding exhibition program there will be an exciting masterclass, an artist-inresidence and holiday classes for kids on offer next year.

PORTLAND DISTRICT HEALTH STAFF PROVE TO BE LIFESAVERS Friday the 13th is an unlucky day for many people; for Kirby Falcone it was the day (on October 13) Portland District Health (PDH) staff saved her baby. A month later as baby Darcy continues to make good progress, Mrs Falcone has praised the PDH staff that helped her through an emergency birth and revived her baby. Doctors and midwives at PDH performed extensive life-saving resuscitation on Darcy while obstetrician Dr Yasser Diab cared for Mrs Falcone who had suffered a major bleed after giving birth. PDH CEO Chris Giles said the said it was a great team effort. “From the moment it was identified that we were dealing with an obstetric emergency, everyone worked together very quickly and professionally,” Ms Giles said. That sentiment is echoed by the proud parents, Kirby and Daniel Falcone. “I cannot say how highly I think of all the staff, the midwives and others off the general ward who went in and helped were all amazing,” Mrs Falcone said. Darcy and Mrs Falcone (pictured above) are both doing well. Born 2.9kg, he is now putting on weight and keeping good health.

AT A GLANCE

FEDERAL MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT Member for Barker Tony Pasin has had his name bandied about in metropolitan media as being potentially caught up the in the dual citizenship saga but the Mount Gambier local has assured voters this is not the case. “Both my parents were born in Italy before migrating to Australia in in early 1960s,” Mr Pasin said. “They both went on to become Australian citizens and at that time ceased to be Italian citizens. This occurred before my birth. As such I have never been entitled to hold Italian citizenship. I am an Australian citizen and only an Australian citizen.” Mr Pasin has also clarified his stance on the anticipated parliamentary vote on changing the marriage act. “As I have made publically clear on numerous occasions, although I personally believe in the traditional definition of marriage, I will vote in Parliament based on the will of the people,” Mr Pasin said. “That is, the majority of Australians have voted to change the definition of marriage to allow same-sex marriage and I will honour this in a Parliamentary vote. I strongly believe however, that we need to ensure that religious freedoms are protected. As such I will be supporting a Bill in Parliament to change the definition of Marriage that’s includes the strongest possible protections for religious freedom. Many people have migrated to Australia to escape religious persecution and in so doing enjoy Australia’s freedoms. I am a passionate advocate for protecting these freedoms.”

POUNDING THE PAVEMENT FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMUNITY It is a community event that has captured the attention of not just Mount Gambier locals but participants from across the Limestone Coast and beyond. Established in 2010, the Blue Lake Fun Fun, this year with naming rights sponsor One Forty One Plantations on board for the first time, regularly attracts 1000 entrants, from the serious runner looking to beat the clock, to the parents with prams, walking the course with friends.

Schools, businesses and local sporting clubs now have the three distance event marked on their calendar and form large contingents to enter the run, while gyms make it part of their boot map challenges and running clubs help newbies train for what is often, their first serious outing as a casual runner. Now in the safe hands of the Lakes Rotary Club of Mount Gambier, the event is not just about promoting an active community but also about raising

funds for community projects and groups and each year, proceeds from the fun run are funnelled back into the community. One of the largest growing contingents at the event is the green and gold uniforms of the Kangaroo Inn Area School and they have also been the recipient of funds from the event. “Kangaroo Inn Area School enjoys being involved in the Fun Run each year as our students really enjoy being active and outdoors,” teacher Kylie Johns said. “With most of our students either residing by the beach or on farming properties and having such open spaces and beautiful grounds at our school, it really encourages outdoor activity for both our primary and secondary school students. A lot of our parents have been involved in the fun run as well which has been wonderful to make it a family event. We have been using any prize money earned to cover entry costs for students in the following year in the aim to encourage increased participation from our students.” Another of the regular recipients of fun run donations, The Friends of the Mount Gambier Library, are grateful for the annual windfall. “Over the years the funds from the Fun Run have been used for a diverse range of resources and programs for the users of the Mt Gambier Library,” spokesperson Chris Lloyd said. “For

example, we have funded audio books, picture books, children’s author sessions, touch screens for the children’s areas and recently robotics equipment. The library staff approach us with requests when they have exhausted their own budgets or they have a worthwhile idea that was not budgeted for. The committee discusses all requests at our meetings asking for further information

or clarification when needed. Library staff attend our meetings to assist with this. We are always assured of the importance of the funds we allocate and enjoy seeing the resources and initiatives being enjoyed by a wide range of library clients.” And then there’s The South East Junction, a mental health activity and resource centre, that also sees the fun run as a double delight – exercise is great for boosting mental health, and the funds returned to the group are much needed to continue to run the programs and services offered by what is basically a self sufficient centre, with no government subsidies. “Since we participated in the Fun Run for the first time in 2014 we have been receiving a very generous donation from the proceeds of the Fun Run, which was and is greatly appreciated,” coordinator Nel Jans said. “All participants doing the Fun Run look forward to it as they challenge themselves to improve on their time. But it is more than just that; for some it is the physical challenge for others the mental and emotional challenge of being in a big crowd. In addition, there is the satisfaction of completing the event, getting out of their comfort zone and gaining confidence and self-esteem. And in the meanwhile we hope to reduce the stigma attached to mental illness. The donations have been used to finance the ongoing activities that we organise such as cooking, gardening, craft and art, exercise in all kind of forms, literacy classes and psycho-social education sessions. Specific activities were organised or supported such as Mental Health First Aid, Embrace and Screenager movies and mindfulness sessions. And partly it supported us in the daily management of the Junction in Mount Gambier and its groups in Millicent and Penola.” cont. opp. page

POUNDING THE PAVEMENT FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMUNITY Podiatrist, with Mount Gambier based business partner Bryce Strahan – the business putting in a 16 strong team for the first time. . “I am pretty happy with that time,” Smart said after crossing the line. “It was just great to be able to put a team in and have runners from Mount Gambier, Penola & Naracoorte.” Entries for the 2017 event closed last week but you can still enter the December 3 event ( a late fee applies) or just head to the Cave Gardens on the day and enjoy the atmosphere and watch the runners compete. Opp. page (far left) - Part of the 2016 Kanagaroo Inn Area School contingent getting ready for the Blue Lake Fun Run. For those for who the fun run is all about the running, all eyes will be on the start line of the 10.4km event – it is also run over 6.8km and 3.2km – to spot the distinctive blue t-shirt of five time winner and reigning champion Thomas Hynes. His inaugural victory came in 2012 when the then 15 year old crossed the finish line first shrouded in anonymity – no one was really sure who this leanly built runner was. All they knew was he had just set a race record – 35:23, eclipsing the marks set by two local runners – inaugural winner Danny Habets (38:38) and 2011 champion Daniel Castle (37:15). Thomas returned in 2013 and shaved 22 seconds off his time to make it the fourth consecutive year of a record run in the event. In 2014, as he lined up on the start line outside the Cave Gardens and people now recognised the no fuss teenager in the blue t-shirt who was again amongst the top fancies for the event. He clinched his third successive title in a time of 35:30 despite a month long lay off with stress fractures in the lead up. He bettered his 2014 time by nine seconds, the following year in a winning time of 35.21, leaving the field in his wake, winning by more than two minutes from the next group of runners to cross the line. It was the year Stawell Gift winner and former local Luke Versace, as famous for being gored by a bull in Pamplona as he is his stellar sprinting achievements, was the headline act, competing in the 6.8km event – but no one could outshine Hynes. The 19 year old from Warrnambool claimed his fifth successive Blue Lake Fun Run last year, smashing 45 seconds off his previous record benchmark for the event to complete it in a time of 34.15. The 3.2km competitors had barely started their trek up the Bay Road hill when Hynes was powering back to the finish line after his two laps of the Blue Lake. “I love coming to this event,” Hynes said, after crossing the finish line. “And I’m really happy with the time.” So once again, it will be a case of if he is here, after a year of stepping

up his training to half marathons, can anyone beat him? Much intrigue will also surround the women’s 10.4km with only one multiple winner as yet in that event, Lucindale local Nikki Smart, the 2016 champion and regular on the Blue Lake Fun Run podium. Smart will be gunning for a third title, to go with her second place in 2013. Her return to the top of the podium last year was a triumphant one. She had given birth to twins Hughie & Shayla only eight months prior, and had also been busy establishing her rebranded podiatry business, your

MOTOR DAY GOES BACK TO BACK AT LEGEND OF THE LAKES HILL CLIMB

Dan Day added the 2017 Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb title to his 2016 championship.

Kevin Mackrell had to settle for second again, and has now finished first or second in all 12 events.

Nick Streckeisen finished third at the 2017 Legend of trhe Lakes Hill Climb.

Damiae Brand took out Friday’s Classic Hill Climb.

Rob Vanderkamp finished second in the Classic Hill Climb.

Rene Felkl rounded out the podium for the 2017 Classic Hill Climb.

Dan Day not only claimed back to back Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb - he did it in style, breaking the record and going under that magical 50 second mark. Day only completed four if his allocated six runs but that was more than enough. He broke the 50 second barrier in his second run of the weekend, clocking a 49.89 and was then able to better that in his last run on Sunday to set a new event record of 49.85. Popular Traralgon driver Kevin Mackrell also saved his best for last when he powered up the Valle Lake climb to clock 50.03 and another second placing at the event. The rest of the field was left in Day and Mackrell’s wake with Nick Streckeisen rounding out the podium, with a time of 53.28 the best part of four seconds behind the winner. Irish visitor Frank Kelly completed all six runs and would have been pleased to see his time improve with each outing on the Valley Lake course, taking his time from 56.89 on his first run to a best time and 13th placing of 55.21 with his final run of the weekend. Classic winner Damien Brand finished seventh in the main event, recording his fastest time in his final run of the weekend as well. PHOTOS COURTESY OF DARREN ARCHIBALD

MAKING THEIR MARK IN THE FASHION STAKES When it comes to racewear and fashions on the field you couldn’t get much better advice than that provided by two local ladies – Mount Gambier’s Abby Von Duve and Millicent’s Brianna Scanlon. Young, beautiful and stylish, the duo are veterans of the Fashions on the Field scene and finished one, two in the South Australian Fashions on the Field Stakes for 2016/17 – Abby (far left) taking the crown from runner-up Brianna (left). It earned both girls a trip to the 2017 Melbourne Cup and a chance to not only strut their stuff on the catwalk alongside the best fashionistas in Australia, but also to enjoy one of the country’s most popular social and racing events. For both girls it was a first – their first time at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November – and they soaked it up. “It’s massive, so, so big and everything was so beautiful,” Abby said. “It was just an exciting day,” Brianna said. “It’s the biggest race event in Australia and I was nervous

and didn’t know what to expect.” The girls headed to Flemington together, along with Brianna’s mother, and could not speak more highly of the revamped general admission area. “The Garden in general admission is almost like the Birdcage but it’s for the general public and it was just beautiful.” Both girls also loved the chance to see and meet people they follow on Instagram and who they knew of from the Fashions on the Field circuit. “There are a couple of racing groups on facebook and it was good to meet some of those girls,” Abby said. “People think it’s a bitchy sort of thing but mostly the girls are really nice and we all get along really well and everyone is really supportive.” Of course, as well as the fun, there was the competition. There were two elimination rounds, where the aspirants were reduced in numbers, before the top 10 hit the catwalk. Abby made that top 10 in a huge coup for the Mangos stylist, who spends much of her time with wet hair and no make up as manager of the Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre swimming lesson program. “I hadn’t tried it all on together as an outfit until the morning of the cup,” Abby said. “I picked up the head piece from Ashlee (local Ashlee Kalantarian of Ashlee

Lauren) the night before and when we got to Melbourne, I found some earrings in Spencer Street.” While Abby is comfortable on the Fashions on the Field catwalk, she was glad the Melbourne Cup event was in an intimate location with a large but not overwhelming crowd. Abby’s Melbourne Cup outfit was an off the rack top and skirt but as she so often does, she made alterations to the ensemble. “I cut off the sleeves and tacked them up,” she said. “And that was hard to do as I went to cut into this beautiful fabric.” She also shortened the skirt and some of that fabric was incorporated by Mount Gambier headwear designer Ashlee Kalantarian, of Ashlee Lauren, into Abby’s elaborate headpiece. ABBY VON DUVE For Abby, her Fashions on the Field journey started a few years ago at the Mount Gambier Racing Club Summer Cup. “I hadn’t gone planning to enter Fashions on the Field and I won People’s Choice and really enjoyed it,” Abby said. She then picked up a win and part of her prize was a package to attend the Kangaroo Island Cup, where she won again and was hooked, taking out the State final for the first time in the 2014/15 season. “I did really get into it after that,” she said. And while she admits that the rules for Fashions on the Field have relaxed even over the time she’s been involved, there are still clear guidelines as you plan a sash worthy outfit. “You have to respect the racing tradition but also be fashion forward,” Abby said. A case in point is Abby’s 2017 Melbourne Cup outfit that sees the tiniest slither of skin showing between her top and skirt – not that long ago that would have deemed her ineligible to enter let alone make the top 10. Abby was put together her many race outfits utilising off the rack, op shops and her own ingenuity and creativity. “I always like to have at least one thing off the rack,” she said. “It is a lot more stressful when you try and make it all yourself and it doesn’t always turn out exactly as you hoped.” There is one thing she refuses to compromise on – ever. “My shoes have to be comfortable,” she said. “You have to wear shoes you can wear all day and I have about four pairs I love and rotate through all my outfits.” In fact, if you knocked on Abby’s door in the lead up to the Melbourne Cup she could often be found walking around the house in those stunning pink shoes and socks, to stretch the shoes and ensure her feet would last the day. “I even vacuumed like that, I can only imagine what someone would have thought if I had to answer the door,” she said. cont. opp. page

MAKING THEIR MARK IN THE FASHION STAKES Given she has made the State finals three times, Abby’s advice can be taken as gospel and her advice for Mount Gambier Gold Cup goers, who are yet to finalise their outfit is simple. “Don’t be too revealing,” she said. “If you have a short skirt, go for longer sleeves or a high neck. Always keep it race appropriate and choose shoes you can be in all day. If you can’t do heels all day then choosing a maxi dress and flats is still perfect for the races. And don’t forget sunscreen.” Abby certainly attracts plenty of questions from locals as they plan their own race outfits. “Because I’m sort of known for it now, people do see me in the street and ask when I’m going to be in the shop (Mangos) so they can come in and get some advice,” she said. And she has some key advice for anyone headed to a racetrack. “I always ask if they want the outfit just for the races or if they are going in Fashions on the Field,” Abby said. “There is a difference between racewear and Fashions on the Field and you can have a bit more fun if you are just heading to the races.” Abby is a huge advocate of op shops as well. “I go around to the op shops about once a month,” Abby said. “My brooches and clutches quite often some from there and you can find some beautiful fabrics that you can use.” Abby is also a planner, keeping a close eye on the predicted weather for any given race day and ensuring she either has the appropriate jacket or wrap to keep her warm but still stylish, or has an outfit that is race appropriate but still cool enough if the weather is warm. As a general rule, Abby competes in around half a dozen Fashions on the Field events a year, with Dunkeld and other local meets on her radar. And while she is headed to next month’s Gold Cup, she is ineligible for the top fashion title as the reigning titleholder. There is a chance she might be part of the judging panel, although that is yet to be confirmed, and she is looking forward to a relaxing day with family and friends in Staff’s marquee. Abby is hopeful the Limestone Coast community really gets behind this rescheduled Gold Cup meeting so perhaps the Mount Gambier Racing Club can convince the powers-that=be to allow the club two major meetings a year – the winter Gold Cup, when it return to its usual May timeslot, and a major Summer Cup. BRIANNA SCANLON Brianna Scanlon’s Fashions on the Field journey started around four or five years ago as well and she, too, enjoyed her first success without planning to be part of the on course competition. Her milliner for the Millicent Cup and Fashions on the Field stalwart Helen Varcoe encouraged to entered despite the fact it was never her

intention and she finished second. “It did take a bit of a push,” Brianna said. “But it also inspired me to do it again and to do it the next year and that’s when I won.” But in reality it was a perfect fit for Brianna, who runs her own business Enchanted Beauty by Brianna. “I love fashion and always have and I do enjoy the races as well,” she said. “And I do think it goes hand in hand with the beauty industry.” So often when you speak to Fashions on the Field entrants, they do often have a back story for their outfit and Brianna certainly has a special one when Helen Varcoe created her hat from one of Brianna’s nanna’s. “She only told me afterwards and it is such a special piece to me – it was such a great surprise for me,” Brianna said. Her race outfits usually start from the dress but always from one signature item, whether it is a headpiece or even shoes. “It is fun, though, starting with a dress and then deciding what you need to add to it to complete the look,” she said. Knowing the importance of being race appropriate but also being on trend, Brianna is always keeping one eye on fashion blogs and Instagram accounts of her favourite style icons – not all celebrities. And it was that research that helped her choose her Melbourne Cup outfit when she saw big bows and big belts were on trend and lent itself to one

of the dresses she had her eye on during her early planning. “The main reason I start with the dress is that it is easier to match the millinery and get something created that matches,” Brianna said. Aside from the Fashions on the Field rules of respecting race tradition and being on trend, Brianna also sticks stringently to two other fashion rules – showing your personality and being comfortable. “It does show when you get on stage if you are comfortable with what you’re wearing,” she said. Ironically, Brianna did, in fact, step outside her comfort zone for the Melbourne Cup. “I usually wear classic millinery, like a boater, but I decided to go for a turban, which was a big step for me,” she said. Brianna would actually list her Fashions on the Field passion as a hobby. “It is something I love doing outside of work,” she said. “It can be an expensive hobby but it fits in really well with my work as well. And my clients like seeing what I come up with.” Brianna now has her sights et firmly on the Mount Gambier Gold Cup next month with the outfit in its early stages. “It does take a lot of planning,” Brianna said. She is looking forward to the cup being held in summer, giving fashionistas a chance to have a bit more fun with their outfits, incorporating florals. “Dressing for spring and summer is a lot easier,” Brianna said.

IT’S ALL ABOUT FAMILY AT COUNTY It was a big year for Mount Gambier’s County Football Club and the Hockey family, in particular, with Katrina, April and Charli Hockey all surpassing 100 games for the club during the 2017 regular season. Adding to the famil celebrations was the naming of Katrina’s mother Helen MacDonald as club person of the year. Katrina is a founding member of Country Football Club and resumed a playing role this year to continue her contribution to the club and to make the most of the opportunity to take the field with both of her daughters. As a former Club Person of the Year her desire to continue her contribution in an on field capacity was not a surprise and as a former club Best & Fairest her return to the field was a welcome one. Both April and Charli joined County in their first year of eligibility after participating in the South East Womens Football Association Junior Development Program. Both have cemented their places in the senior side with Charli taking out the County FC Players Player Award for 2017 while April also had her strongest season for the club after having a break in 2016 to concentrate on her Year 12 studies. Also in Crouch Shield action, Glencoe’s Leigh Von Duve made his second century in as many seasons, remaining unbeaten on 144 as Glencoe looks to pile on the pain after South Gambier was dismissed for 42 before Glencoe enjoyed a 207 opening partnership. but also the first hat trick of his career. Risely had been on a hat trick on a few occasions previously but never produced that third wicket taking ball – until last weekend.

LOCAL SPORT

NEWCOMER READY TO RACE FOR STATE

SOUTH EAST TRIO HEADING TO FIJI

The Limestone Coast has a proud history of strong soccer representation at State and national level and Kali Langley, Lauren Frost and Nadia Metsger are continuing that proud tradition. The trio has been selected to represent South Australia at the Fiji Cup. Kali is a relative newcomer, but just as her transition to women’s Aussie Rules football has been a success, so has her foray into the world of soccer. The 15 year old Mount Gambier High School student was enticed into the sport by friends, started playing at school and is now representing her State – it is a journey that was been fast tracked in basically a two year period. Representing local club Wanderers, Kali is a goal keeper and she is looking forward to the challenge of higher honours in her first outing in the South Australian tri-colours. Fellow 15 year old and Mount Gambier High School student Lauren Frost has been a soccer convert for much longer. The United player has been playing the sport since she was five, following in the footsteps of her mother Tanya. A touch football, karate and basketball athlete as well, the utility player, who can fill any

role on the pitch, is no stranger to higher honours and is looking forward to another challenge to test herself against the best. It is also Nadia Metsger’s second time representing South Australia. Taking up soccer as a seven year old, the 16 year old Tenison Woods College student, she actually took up the sport to help turn with her footwork and the now defender took to soccer like a duck to water. Scouts at State Country and State Championships originally talent identified the trio, and then a series of camps and training sessions earned them final selection. They are now on the treadmill of heading to Adelaide most weekends for training before heading off to represent their State next month The trio has been financially assisted by the Mount Gambier Junior Sports Assistance Fund and the South East Women’s Football Association.

Ten year old Jacob Salmon is a relative newcomer to athletics but a successful stint at the region’s cross country competition this year has seen the Tenison Woods College on the fast track to success, making his way to the 2017 South Australian SAPSASA Athletics team, as well as representing the State at cross country. “I have done cross country every year and enjoyed it,” Jacob said. He had a couple of top 10 finishes under his belt but this year he won the event, before heading to Adelaide for the Statewide Oakbank competition, where he finished third. “I did do Little Athletics when I was about four,” he said. But it was short lived with other sports, including football, cricket and soccer keeping him busy. A win in the 800m at a regional athletics event further stamped Jacob’s reputation as a strong middle distance competitor and it was time to enlist some coaching help. Peter Collins was enlisted initially, with Jacob training alongside Jonty Collins, the reigning 3km Blue Lake Fun Run male winner, while in the past month, Mount Gambier based athletics icon Sally Taylor has been in charge of Jacob’s development. Taking on Sally came on the heels of Jacob’s State selection following strong results in Adelaide competition where the country kids went toe to toe with their city counterparts. Jacob is training for the 800m and 1500m, having already had State experience in the SAPSASA Cross Country team that competed in Hobart in August, where Jacob competed in the 2km event. Jacob is keen to pursue both his cross country running and track events. Training for the State athletics team has

The last Australian manufactured Holden It was an emotional day for many Australians a few weeks ago as the final Holden Commodore rolled off the Elizabeth production line and the factory finally closed. Holden has been synonymous with Australians for over 100 years. From back in the horse and cart era, right to the very end, Holden has produced world-class motor vehicles, not only for Australia, but exporting to the rest of the world. To pay tribute to Holden’s manufacturing achievements, history and its important place in Australian society, local dealership OGR Holden will transform its Jubilee Highway sales showrooms and workshop floors to showcase a diverse collection of the greatest Holden’s ever produced in this country. “ We want to hold an event that recognises the community of people

who care about the brand, its manufacturing heritage and its future,” OGR Dealer Principal Bryce Roberts (pictured) said. “The event will include a hand selected range of Australian-made Holden cars, led by the first and last cars built in Australia by Holden: a 1948 48/215 (FX) right through to the 2017 VF II Limited Edition Motorsport Sedan”. The event is open to the general public and will be held at the OGR Holden site on Jubilee Highway West from 9am to 12noon this Saturday. All who attend the event this Saturday will be given a sneak-peak at the all-new Holden Equinox which is not due in dealerships until December. It’s the long-awaited Captiva replacement and is fitted with new fuel-efficient engine options and transmissions. It’s a real insight into the future style Holden is moving towards

as a full importer. From 2013, Holden had committed to 24 new models in the line-up by 2020. Confirmed is the New Equinox, Commodore replacement and Arcadia SUV. Leaving Holden with six unannounced models to enter showrooms in the coming years. Looking to the future, Holden will remain a diversified business and a powerhouse of the Australian automotive industry. With approximately 700 direct employees in Melbourne and across national zone offices, Holden will also retain its highly-skilled Design and Engineering teams, and the famous Lang Lang vehicle Proving Ground in country Victoria, employing a total of more than 1000 people Australia-wide. The future of Holden in Australia is clear. Holden is here to stay.

BORDERLINE ROARS INTO ACTION THIS WEEKEND Long time supporter and speedway enthusiast Ray Scott has secured the services of sprintcar star Brooke Tatnell as the headline act, alongside a band of around 10 local drivers, for the Borderline Speedway’s jam packed January program. The season officially kicks off this Saturday night with Round 3 of the Eureka Garages & Sheds SRA Sprintcar Series, the Formula 500 South Australian Title, an

event that was washed out earlier this year, and with juniors as the support class. The offseason has been a busy one for officials and volunteers as the club continues to prepare for the 2018 Australian Sprintcar Championship from January 25-27. “The committee is very grateful to Bill Barrows and all his people who have offered their services to get all this work done,” president Cary Jennings said. The banks have

been made more public friendly and nine new corporate boxes have been added to the highly regarded facility with volunteer labour ensuring the Borderline Speedway will be the talk of the speedway industry that Australia Day weekend. It is the hosting of the championships that has helped Mr Scott lure Brooke Tatnell to his racing team for January, giving Tatnell valuable experience on the Glenburnie track in the lead up to the national title. It means Tatnell will contest the King’s Challenge, the Border Speedway’s premier stand alone meeting – an event his won in its inaugural year, 1995. As part of the off season improvements, new clay has been added to the track in the past fortnight and officials are keen to see this Saturday night just how the track handles with the new surface. Jennings is expecting most, if not all, the locally based sprintcar drivers to be part of the action this Saturday night, and once the curtain falls this weekend, the World Series Sprintcars are the next highlight on the calendar on December 28, before the January marathon starts. Gates open at 4pm, with hot laps preceding the 6pm start of racing. Left - Mount Gambier’s Glen Sutherland lifestyle1.net | 45
