HOW GOOD IS FOOTY?

he 2023 NAB AFLW Season has been our best yet, with moments that will no doubt be etched in the annals of women’s footy history. This season we had record crowds, increased scoring and two expansion teams making the finals in only their second season – how good is that? Speaking of good, what about Danielle Ponter’s jaw-dropping goal from the centre circle in round two? Or Courtney Hodder’s courageous mark – running back with the flight of the ball – typifying the determination and fearlessness that characterises the athletes of the AFLW. Mon Conti was crowned the league’s best and fairest at only 23 years old. What a career she has ahead of her!

A special mention goes to Ebony Marinoff, Ally Anderson and Emily Bates, who became the first players to reach 75 games – a significant milestone in the AFLW’s short but incredible history. And then there’s my personal favourite moment – amid all the on-field brilliance and athleticism, who could forget Chloe Molloy’s 2-4-6-8 clap back celebration? Sydney’s Henson Park has became the coolest place to watch the footy and the most-attended AFLW venue. Windy Hill added charm and nostalgia to the competition with its reintroduction to elite football for the first time in 20 years. We’ve played 98 incredible games and it all comes down to this: North Melbourne against

he highly-anticipated 2023 season has lived up to its bold and exciting promise. New stars have made their mark on the game and we’ve been captivated by unforgettable moments. We’ve watched the game’s most talented players take to the field each week and witnessed the impact they have had as role models both on and off the field. NAB is incredibly proud to support the growth of the

game at all levels; from NAB AFL Auskick to the big time and, of course, through our AFLW partnership since its inaugural season. We love seeing more girls playing footy and take pride in creating new opportunities for women in sport. Today, we not only celebrate this year’s best two teams but also the contribution the AFLW makes in elevating the recognition and visibility of women’s sport.

the Brisbane Lions in the 2023 NAB AFLW Grand Final. Eight-time All-Australian Emma Kearney and coach Darren Crocker will be looking to lead the Roos to their maiden AFLW premiership, while Craig Starcevich and Bre Koenen will be looking to win their second flag in their fifth Grand Final. Good luck to both teams. This will be my last Grand Final as General Manager of Women’s Football at the AFL and I am so proud of what we have been able to achieve together in the first eight seasons. I can’t wait to witness the drama, the passion and the history that will unfold.

NICOLE LIVINGSTONE OAM

AFL GENERAL MANAGER OF WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

On behalf of NAB, I wish both teams, players and supporters the best of luck in the 2023 NAB AFLW Grand Final. I look forward to seeing everyone back on the field next year for another fantastic season.

oday’s AFLW Grand Final will be a fascinating contest, with Brisbane set to take part in its fifth flag decider in seven completed seasons, while North Melbourne has finally made it to the big stage, the first expansion club to do so. Interestingly, it will be only the second AFLW Grand Final to take place in Victoria and the first since 2018. The Kangaroos start as slight favourites due to playing in their home state. For North, this looms as the culmination of a premiership quest that began when it entered the League in 2020. The Kangaroos put together what some felt was an unfairly dominant list, but COVID brought that season

to a premature halt and they haven’t quite recaptured the magic since. They developed a reputation as a finals-calibre team that couldn’t quite win the big games and beat Adelaide, Melbourne or Brisbane. If they win the 2023 flag, they will have taken down all three in the same finals series. Adelaide is the first that comes to mind when thinking about the dominant teams of the first decade of AFLW, because of their three premierships, but Brisbane’s ultra-consistency has been remarkable. The Lions have won only one Grand Final from five attempts, however, and will not want to be left wondering what could have been again. North and Brisbane have earned their spots in the Grand Final, finishing third and fourth on the ladder respectively before knocking off ladder leaders Adelaide and Melbourne in away finals.

The Lions took down Geelong in a preliminary final thriller, while the Roos held off the Crows by a point. Both teams finished the regular season with seven wins and three losses, but North was ultimately more impressive across the season. The Roos finished with a percentage of 224.4, while the Lions sat at 149. This is because Brisbane gave up 339 points across the season, while North Melbourne conceded just 213. No team was more frugal and this dominant defence was on full display in the qualifying final, holding Melbourne to just nine points. This will be an epic Grand Final between two teams with everything to prove. Expect a heavily-contested game, with goals at a premium and a split-second decision here or there that might decide the outcome.

KEY MATCH-UPS RUNNING POWER: Another big game from star North on-baller Ash Riddell could land the Kangaroos their first AFLW flag.

JASMINE GARNER v CATHY SVARC

u Despite what the umpires will

tell you, North’s Jasmine Garner is the best player in the game – but Cathy Svarc has proven she is one of the best defensive midfielders as well. Svarc has the strength to go with Garner at contests and will surely be given the task of attempting to limit her impact in the Grand Final.

ASH RIDDELL v ALLY ANDERSON

u The two midfield guns will

likely shake hands early in the contest before running their own races, but there is no question whoever performs best could swing the result. Riddell and Anderson are both midfield stars averaging career highs in disposals and coming off strong finals efforts.

EMMA KING v TAHLIA HICKEY

u Which ruck star will give their

team first use in the Grand Final? Given this is going to be a tough, contested game, the hit-out battle will have a genuine say, particularly late. King, who was immense during key stages of the preliminary final, will also push forward hard and force Hickey to follow her deep into defence.

2023 NAB AFLW GRAND FINAL

QUESTION TIME WITH

… ERIN PHILLIPS Retiring superstar Erin Phillips knows a thing or two about playing on the big stage. ASHLEY BROWNE You’ve played best-of-five WNBA Grand Finals and single-game AFLW Grand Finals. What’s tougher? u The single game brings definitely more pressure. You get one crack at having the best game on the day. There’s no relying on tomorrow, which makes the pressure and intensity that much harder. The thing about a series is that it is like running a marathon. It is physically demanding, but you can’t beat the intensity of a single-game Grand Final. You dominated in two Grand Finals. What was your secret? u I loved playing in big games; the higher the stakes and the pressure, the better. I didn’t shy away from it. I have always prepared the same way going into a home and away game or a Grand Final, just by making sure I was disciplined through the week and doing what I had to do. And then go out there and have some fun and embrace the moment.

Another Grand Final for the Brisbane Lions. What do you admire about them? u Craig Starcevich is unbelievable. No matter how many players he loses year in and year out, he has shown that he’s an incredible coach. You see the great respect the players have for him and the style of play he and his coaches have implemented. Every season they are just so competitive, they’re close-knit and have a great culture. It can be surprising to have a team with so much consistency and success

Have some fun and embrace the moment

year after year, but on the other hand, after talking to those who have played under him, there is always complete buy-in. What has impressed you about North Melbourne this year? u They have a great mix of senior and younger players, as well as those in between. It’s been great to watch their journey and to now see them play in a Grand Final. Jasmine Garner is arguably the best player in the competition, but they have great balance across the field, and they play their roles really well. It makes for a fascinating and hotly-contested Grand Final and I can’t wait to watch it. Erin Phillips won three premierships with Adelaide and was named Best on Ground in the 2017 and 2019 AFLW Grand Finals. She will present the award to the best player on the ground this afternoon.

BOWING OUT: Phillips ended her glittering career last month with her beloved Port Adelaide.

Do you have a favourite of your three flags? u No, I don’t. They were all very unique and for different reasons. You look at the inaugural one (2017) and there was only ever going to be one first. It was pretty historic. The second flag (2019) was just incredible in front of 53,034 people and the third one (2022) we created this incredible dynasty at the Crows. They were all so special.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: Geelong’s Kate Surman has an extra stripe on her shorts; her boots have changed colour to yellow; she has an extra finger on her right hand; the word ‘Sherrin’ on the football is upside down; the ‘1870’ is missing on the back of Port Adelaide player Madeline Keryk’s guernsey.
