WELCOME TO THE 2024 SEASON PREVIEW

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this very first edition of my country footy pre season review.

With the success and positive feedback and response to the first ‘Season Review’ I compiled at the end of last year, I thought why not try for a ‘Pre Season’ edition for the upcoming 2024 season.

I’ve included in the obvious information such as each league fixture, coaching information for football and netball and a quick recap of last season. However I’ve also done a bit of a deep dive into each league and complied a 10 years form guide for each senior football club as well as comparing scoring averages over the years.

So this pre season preview was born, all 190+ pages of it!

Please note, there has been a lot of data and information to gather and go through to put this together. I have tried to ensure the accuracy of it all. However I am aware there still may end up being some typos, mistakes or miscalculations, so I apologise in advance if this is the case. I am a 1 man production team, so if there are any glaring errors, please let me know so I can rectify them.

I’m excited to share too that this year the site approaches celebrates it’s 25th anniversary of covering all things country football.

I would personally like to thank everyone who visits, feedbacks and enjoys what the site is all about - sharing information for those who love and support country footy and netball from wherever you are in the world. I love that this ‘hobby’ of mine brings so much joy to others.

With this in mind, I’ve done a bit of recapping of some of the key stats from the past 25 years, had some fun with the AFL Draft and even picked my best ‘county’ AFL side of players drafted between 1999 and 2024. I’m sure you’ll agree and also disagree with my selections, but hey, that’s the fun of it too.

Finally, I hope you enjoy reading the preview as much as I did putting it together. I have a couple of new ideas to hopefully bring to fruition across this season as well.

To all the coaches, volunteers, player both football and netball, senior and junior, umpires, supporters, members, sponsors and lovers of country football, I wish you and your club all the best for the upcoming season.

LOOKING AHEAD

BACK FROM THE BRINK

Last season saw Corowa Rutherglen FNC in the Ovens & Murray FNL sit out all grades of football and netball while Rushworth FNC in the Kyabram & District FNL and Yea FNC in the Outer East FNL continued through their seasons without fielding senior grades of football, rather focussing on their netball and junior grades. It’s so exciting to see the hard work over the last 12 months for all three clubs with plenty of new players signings and renewed hope and optimism for their communities as they re enter the fray for season 2024. Unfortunately we’ve lost Broadford FNC this season as they go into recess in 2024

NEW CLUBS TO DEBUT

Two new merged clubs make thier debuts this season. In the Maryborough Castlemaine District FNL former clubs, Maryborough Rovers FNC and Royal Park FNC have come together and will be know known as the Maryborough Giants Football Netball Club. In the west of the state Horsham and District FNL 2024 grand finalist, Jeparit Rainbow Storm, have joined forces with 2024 Wimmera FNL grand finalists Southern Mallee Giants. To play in the Wimmera FNL they will be the Southern Mallee Thunder North Central FL teams Nullawil and Wycheproof-Narraport have agreed to merge in 2025

LEAGUE MERRY GO ROUND

Plenty of teams were looking to move at the end of 2023, with only a couple successful Kyneton FNC heads to the Riddell & District FNL after over seventy years in the Bendigo FNL. The Western Rams FNC leave the MCDFNL to head to the metro Western Region FNL, taking with them the current longest country losing streak of 69 games, leaving the mantle to Portarlington FNC in the Bellarine FNL who have 68 Tocumwal FNC leave the Murray FNL after a one year homecoming to return back to the league they just left, the Picola and District FNL as a possible new league is on hold for the moment.

NEW CONCUSSION PROTOCOLS REVEALED

These new guidelines have been designed to help everyone involved including medical staff, volunteers, coaches, players, parents and administrators, understand the steps for the initial management of a suspected concussion and the stages for return-to-play following concussion. In essence under the guidelines, the earliest a player may return to play once completing a graded program and obtaining a medical clearance is on the 21st day following the concussion. How strictly these new guidelines are implemented and ahdered to will be a watch this space across the season

AGE DILEMMAS AHEAD

New minimum age eligibility rules introduced by AFL Victoria on the eve of the 2024 season look to create some possible selection challenges and dilemmas for not only Senior football grades, but Junior levels as well. Players must have turned the required age by December 31st the previous year. The new minimum age allowed for Senior grades is now 16 while some ‘Thirds’ level grades such as Under 17's and Under 18's now have minimum age requirements of 14 and 15 respectively Thais may cause some headaches for clubs low on juniors, who get by with requiring younger players to top up older grades.

NEW NETBALL RULES IN PLACE

In December 2023 World Netball launched the Rules of Netball 2024 Edition which features updates to rules that netball leagues will need to implement for the upcoming season. The following rules have all had some sort of adjustment through this process: tactical changes, goal after whistle, centre pass checks, toss up removal, short pass, player safety, foul play, game management, advantage, contact, playing the ball and throw-ins. As a long standing netball dad, I’m most disappointed to see the end of the toss up! Also, the ability for players to sub in/out during play will be interesting too.

EXTRA ALLOWANCES FOR 2024

Despite some clubs coming unstuck with breaches of the salary cap and player points system, there is some good news in this space After seven seasons, the player points policy has been reviewed to make it easier for clubs and leagues to attract one-point players. There has also been an increase in salary caps for most leagues for 2024, with some District leagues seeing increases of $10,000 while major leagues caps have increased by $5,000 - $6,000. At the same time as these club increases, AFL Victoria is also increasing it’s own resources to make sure clubs don’t overspend.

GRASSROOTS RETURN

every Premiership

One of the great things about country footy is when those who’ve made it at the top level, come back to share thier knowledge and talents at former home club or in general at grassroots level. Former Fremantle Docker David Mundy will return home to Seymour FNC Lions, while ex Kangaroos legend Ben Cunnington will return to the Hampden FNL for Warrnambool FNC. Ed Curnow takes the coaching role Lorne FNC, while Sunraysia FNL defenders will already be having sleepless nights knowing former Essendon star Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti has signed on for Imperials FNC.

CELEBRATIONS AHEAD

There are plenty of clubs and leagues celebrating major milestones this year. After their recent struggles for their wider community due to devastating floods, it’s fantastic to see the Rochester FNC celebrate 150 years this season The oldest current country football club is Castlemaine FNC in the Bendigo FNL who enter their 166th year. From a league perspective this season sees the East Gippsland FNL hit the half century with 50 years and netball is not be left out with the Pakenham FNC’s netball club celebrating 85 years in 2024

DROUGHT BREAKERS??

Last year saw the Western Rams FNC in the Riddell and District FNL held the dubious honour of the longest losing steak in Victorian country football with 69. However, their move to the metro Western Region FNL means the new leaders are Portarlington FNC in the Bellarine FNL with 68. Here’s hoping the streak is broken this season. When it comes to premiership droughts, we hope that the Wodonga Saints FNC in the Tallangatta and District FNL can hoist the cup for the first time since they were still called Bethanga FC, all the way back in 1929.

REVISTING THE LAST 25 AFL DRAFTS

To celebrate the 25th season of countryfootyscores.com we're had a bit of fun. We wanted to look at who have been the best former country footy players drafted to the AFL

To ensure '25' drafts to match our 25th anniversary, we started with the 1999 draft.

We made our selections and then used the results (there were over 200 votes on our online poll at countryfootyscores.com) in this Season Preview magazine

Essentially the premise was, that if you had to pick the best player from each selection for your team, who would it be?

The process was simple:

Those who took part in the online poll were asked who they thought was the best former country footballer drafted at each draft pick from Pick 1 to Pick 25.

As mentioned the Drafts were from 1999 - 2023 to ensure we had '25' drafts to choose from.

All players drafted at each draft prick were included, irrespective of how many games they may or may not have played.

Players are those from clubs that play in AFL Vic country leagues, so some NSW based players were included on that basis if their club plays in an affiliated AFL Vic league

Whilst some leagues may have moved to Metro competitions, they were included as they were in Vic Country affiliated leagues at the time of the player being drafted

Yes we know Justin Koschitzke is from Brocklesby. However he was aligned with Albury FNC when he went to the Murray Bushrangers, so that's why he (and others) are listed slightly differently

So now our credibility is on the line Over the next few pages we have listed who our pick was from the pool of players at each draft selection.

We’ve then included all the players from the drafts and highlighted in yellow who the public most voted for and the percentage of votes they received.

How did we go?

Colac FNC - Hampden FNL

In the history of number 1 picks, the resume of Hodge ranks up there not only against this group, but of all time #1 draft choices.

Not only one of the most loved players of the past 25 years, no one mixes elite skills with laid back country boy better than Roughie. 2003

No surprise with our pick here, as it was the easiest one we made The biggest surprise was Dusty not gettting 100% of the votes. 2000

Despite his current off field challenges, the on field results are far and away above the other options we have to choose at this pick. 1999

Plenty of choices here that could easily be the top pick at any other draft number, but against Pendlebury they were never a chance ONLINE

The experience and career to date gets Rohan the nod here, but Rachele and Humphrey may challenge this pick if we do this in the future.

Some quality at pick 7 with Wines and Lewis in this grouping, but it’s very hard not to pick a guy who has the CV that Selwood does.

Hard to surpass Bartel as the pick here. Time will tell if Caleb Serong keeps his current trajectory to possibly challenge in the future.

Poll results were close between former Murray Bushranger teammates McEvoy and Ziebell but we’re also picking the ‘Big Boy’.

Not a pick with a great amount of depth to choose from, so Smith is a fairly easy choice for us here with 182 games and 146 goals.

A mix of playing careers at this draft pick. Rioli’s skill level and with time to continue to improve his consistency gets our vote.

OUR TEAM OF THE LAST 25 YEARS

Each season for the past few years, we’ve selected who we think has been in our All Australian ‘country’ team, based on former country based footballers who’ve had standout AFL seasons.

So given we are celebrating 25 years, it make sense to pick who we think have been the best former country players at AFL level.

The selection criteria was pretty simple, however the choices were extremely hard in most cases as there were 730 players to narrow down to 22 spots

There are some absolute stars of the game who have missed out! Again we may or may not have got it 100% correct, but the discussion it generates is half the fun.

Players had to be drafted, at any draft or number from the 1999-2024 AFL drafts

Being a traditionalist, players were picked in the positions they predominately played No filling the team with 20 mid fielders on my watch.

We know some players may come from NSW clubs, however if that clubs play in a Victorian affiliated country league, they fit our criteria. If you don’t agree, too bad!

Yes, some clubs are on the verge of the city or may now be in the suburban fringe, however if they were or are playing in a Victorian Country aligned league at the time of a player being drafted, they fit the criteria.

So as with our draft selections from picks number 1 to 25, our credibility as a football judge is certainly on the line, as below is a list of some of the notable players we couldn’t find a place for in our team

ABOUT THE SEASON GUIDE

10 YEAR FORM TABLE

VFL/AFL INFORMATION

This guide includes any clubs who participated in the league over the past 10 seasons

Results show are the for the Senior football grade and indicates the clubs ladder position at the end of teh home and away season.

Grey highlights indicate when a club finished in the finals and green highlights years when clubs won the premiership for that season.

Some leagues have additional notes relating specifically to their league at the nottom of the table.

This information relates to players drafted to AFL or AFLW clubs and is based on the player record we currently have going back to the formation of the VFL in 1897

The total draftees count relates to players drafted to an AFL or AFLW club from a club that was aligned to the specific league at the time of the players drafting.

It is important to note that the ‘All Time’ recruit and drafting tally is a count of all players either recruited to a VFL club prior to the introduction of the AFL draft as well as subsequent drafts

As well as this, the number reflects the recruit/draftees club being aligned to specific league at the time the recruiting or drafting took place. For example if a club moved leagues, the tally is reflecting of the league the club was in at that time

"The RDFNL have been looking for a senior club to join the league for some time now and it is great that it has come to fruition with Kyneton FNC senior teams joining their juniors in the RDFNL

It is great to see the senior women's competition continuing to grow with Lancefield having a team for the first time and participation across all junior competitions also on the rise

We are excited by many upcoming events and fixtures but one that should be highlighted is our senor interleague program making a return in 2024

We look forward to the best footballers and netballers fighting it out with Southern FNL on the 11th of May at RSEA Park Our men's football will be led by Daniel Nolan our women's by Scott Caton and our Netball by Katie Clarke
