She’s back on stage and couldn’t be happier as Toni Childs winds up her Retrospective tour – a celebration of the 30th anniversary Australian release of her debut albumFollowingUnion.its release, Toni was nominated for two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Rock Vocal Performance (Female) for the single Don’t Walk Away in what was a stunning start to her more than three decade career. The idea for the Retrospective tour came from colleague Rae Mitchell and so in 2019, Toni played 56 dates. labels” is the message from Substance Misuse Limestone Coast (SMLC) after a recent social media post garnered stigmatising comments around drug and alcohol use.

Cr Smith said following awards like these the Visitor Information Centre sees a significant spike in enquiries which allows them to promote the whole Moyne region to a wider audience.

Ms Bourchier initially raised the improtance of language, especially in the media, and eliminating the use of terms including junkie and not ‘sexing up’ the name of illicit drugs, including ice, but actually using the technical name for what are damaging substances, in the lead up to International Overdose Awareness Day at the end of last month and she also championed a

we don’t want to talk about it but we will talk about someone with cancer or another serious illness,” she said. “Families just don’t feel comfortable to talk about it (addiction). We have to change the language we use talking about people who have a lived experience of drug and alcohol use. Language matters.”

“I hear parents call up talkback radio and talk about ‘my addict’ and yet they would never say ‘my diabetic’ if they were talking about a diabetic child, they are just your child, they are not defined by their medical condition or issues,” she said. “Labelling is a shaming way to talk about people. I also understand that people don’t know what they don’t know and that is why education of the entire community when it comes to addiction is so important.”

“ It’s a whole of community effort and congratulations go to everyone involved in our incredibly important tourism industry.”

Getting away from labels when talking about drug & alcohol issues

Mayor Cr Ian Smith said to be named in the top three small tourist towns in the country for two years running was an excellent result.

“It was a that BBQ in 2014 that the startling facts about the diagnosis and death rate of prostate cancer were made plain to me - it is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australian men,” Mr Pasin said.

Words matter

Member for Barker Tony Pasin is holding his eighth Big Aussie BBQ in conjunction with the Limestone Coast

“The following year I decided to hold a Big Aussie BBQ in Mount Gambier and got the local Prostate Cancer Support

A survey shared on social media by the Limestone Coast Drug Action Team about a “memory tree” for local people to have a place for reflection and remembrance was meant to gather community feedback, but instead brought out some harmful and negative labels, said SMLC Project Officer Sophie Bourchier.

Prostate cancer kills more men than breast cancer women, yet awareness of these deadly statistics remains relatively low.

National honour for iconic tourism town

“Prostate cancer kills over 3500 fathers, friends and uncles every year. If the Mount Gambier Big Aussie BBQ encourages just one man to get tested and saves that one life

“There’s a real power in language and by focusing on people, rather than their use of alcohol and other drugs, and choosing words that are inclusive, everyone can help reduce the impact of stigma.”

Cooking up a storm for prostate cancer

“The tourism sector is worth around $70 million to Moyne’s economy annually so it’s important we do whatever we can to help encourage visitors back to our region following two years of COVID related travel restrictions,” he“Awardssaid. like this add another string to our bow and help us promote the region to a wider audience and showcase what a wonderful place Moyne is to visit –from the volcanic planes through to the coast.”

Instead of using labelling language, Ms Bourchier suggested using “someone who uses drugs” or “person with lived experience of drug dependence”.

The 2022 Mount Gambier Big Aussie BBQ will be held this Wednesday from 11:30am at Tony Pasin’s office, 27 Commercial Street East, Mount Gambier.

And that language matters message is one Ms Bourchier is also looking to get through to those in the inner circle of an addict.

The Power of Words is available on the ADF website.

The World Health Organisation ranks drug dependence as the most stigmatised health condition globally, with alcohol dependence ranked number four. Ms Bourchier said there were plenty of good resources out there for people who wished to inform themselves about the correct language.

“Events like International Overdose Awareness Day are designed to start a conversation in the community around overdose prevention but for some, it kickstarted the wrong conversation,” Ms Bourchier said.

“It’s disappointing, but not surprising that this happened. Labelling terms such as “junkie” and “addict” are still used in some media outlets and of course, people are going to copy and use those terms thinking that’s okay. It’s not“Labelsokay.”are for food packaging. People should not be defined by their substance use. Labelling someone by their AOD use is demoralising and stigmatising and means people may be less likely to ask for help or seek out treatment options. The right words have the power to reduce stigma and improve health outcomes.”

Port Fairy has again been named one of Australia’s top tourist towns at a ceremony in Canberra.Thetown took out the bronze medal at the Australian Top Tourism Town Awards earlier this month, where it was up against six other nominees in the small town category.

If so, the Stand Like Foundation is seeking applications from community groups and not-forprofits based in or servicing the Limestone Coast.

The exceptional aging quality of Limestone Coast reds is also highlighted by strong entries in the Museum class for wines greater than seven years old, while enthusiasm for the Chardonnay and Shiraz classes reflects an impressive run of recent vintages.

Sails at Robe head chef Adam Brookes will prepare the four-course feast, which will also showcase previous trophy winners and strong performers, with a particular focus on wines from the coast.Tickets for the dinner and transport to the event are still available, with bus timetables due out early next month.

“We are grateful for the continuous support of NF McDonnell and Sons as a major sponsor,” Ms Keding said.

The entries are in, and next month’s Limestone Coast Wine Show has attracted some of the strongest numbers in the event’s 21-year history, with more than 475 wines nominated by 69 exhibitors.

Local grants on offer

Last year, the Stand Like Stone Foundation awarded more than $45,000 in grants to 14 communityled projects across the region.

Community Events Team Leader Xarnia Keding said there are 10 prize categories with more than $3500 in prize money to be won.

The stud is planning to offer at the September auction a similar number of rams to last year’s sale; 170 Poll Dorsets and White Suffolks, and 10 Suffolk rams.

“Last year, in recognition of the good season and demand from clients our sale offering went up from 300 to nearly 350 rams. We are planning to offer those numbers again at this year’s sale. It’s great to see such enthusiasm in the sheep industry continuing this year.” Mr Prentice said.

The younger cattle mostly sold to a dearer trend due to the lift in their quality and the bulls also sold to firm. The market was made up of 8 bulls, 153 grown steers, 129 trade run cattle and 167 cows.

Now in its fourth year, the event attracts people from as far away as Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne. Several viewing parties were held, one hosted by United Way Glenelg at The Royal Hotel Cool room and another with students from Portland Secondary College, sharing pizza and philanthropy in equal measure.

“Partnering with United Way Glenelg allows us to contribute to an improved and sustainable future for our members and local communities. As a social enterprise bank, now more than ever, you’re making a difference with us. It was truly wonderful to see the community spirit at its best!”

Generosity in focus

More than 100 people embraced the virtual fundraising event from their lounge room, and another 40 at a viewing party to see three deserving community projects.

Gavin Heathcote, CEO of AWA Alliance Bank, said the night exceeded all his expectations.

If The SayNo2FamilyViolence could raise $10,000 they would invite “Collective Shout”, a nationally recognised education program, to deliver workshops to secondary students in Years 7-10, however, if they could hit “the jackpot” and raise $25,000 they would deliver the program to all students, teachers and veryjustbyPyetheir$28,720,SayNo2FamilyViolencecommunity.raisedwellandtrulyexceedingexpectations.SayNo2FamilyVoilence’sJohnwascompletelytakenabacktheamountraised.“Thegenerosityofourcommunityblowsmeaway,”hesaid.“AftergoingthroughthetryingtimesofCOVIDandchallengingeconomictimesthatthecommunityisstillsogenerousisamazing.”ThepitcherswerecoachedwiththesupportofBayviewCollegeEnglishteacherDebraCrespan,learningtheartofstorytellingthroughanintensiveworkshopto

With encouragement from MC Neil O’Donnell, the audience was inspired to pledge to their favourite project. Supporting the event was AWA Alliance Bank which matched pledges up to $15,000.

Testament to the evenness of the two teams, the final result was not decided until the final rubber, when Reid and Davies stepped into the arena. Reid gained the upper hand, claiming an enthralling opening game by 15 points to 13, and looked to be headed to victory when he took the second game 11-5. Davies would not lie down however and drew on all his experience and determination to claw his way back into the contest, taking the third game. Reid appeared shaken and fatigued, making some uncharacteristic unforced errors, allowing Davies to claim the fourth game and send the rubber to a decider. The teams were drawn from a blind draw that included a division one player with a division two player creating a even competition. The pre-requisit colour of pink on the course made up for the grey skies along with lots of good camaraderie.
