New Stand Like Stone sub fund to focus on music

Honouring Beth McKay

“And there’s no doubt that Beth would be thrilled knowing that this sub fund will continue to make a positive impact in vocal arts in this region,” Ms Renney said. “But we also need to acknowledge the sponsors and supporters of the Showcase events over the years, for it’s their generosity that’s not only enabled the Showcases to happen, but now also the Beth McKay Memorial Sub Fund”.

“We were approached late last year by members of the notfor-profit Limestone Coast Choral and Vocal Showcase Group, an organisation that was originally established by local residents of Mount Gambier,” Mr Babolka said.

the club led by immediate past president Jill Austin banded together with a special initiative, demonstrating their gardening skills raising 750 potted blue and gold pansies to create an indoor garden display in recognition of the milestone of 75 years’ service to the Australian community.

Lions Australia is proud to celebrate its 75th Anniversary this month.

Group.”TheShowcase Group had links to the local Mount Gambier Choral Society and was established back in 2004 with the view to holding an annual Limestone Coast choral and vocal showcase event.

The first club was formed in Lismore in 1947 and Lions Australia has grown to be Australia’s largest service club organisation with a strong history in community service and commitment to improving the lives of others.

Donations to Stand Like Stone are never spent, remaining in perpetuity for the benefit of the Limestone Coast earning interest, which is then provided back to the local community through charitable grants and educational scholarships.

In my head I’d always planned that at the point where I was going bald I would start shaving my head. I probably wasn’t thinking total nudenut, but maybe down to a number two. The concern I had though was that the person who is going bald always seems to be the last one to know that it’s happening. Often things seem fine up front which is all you can see in the mirror, and the problem at the back of the noggin is difficult to see.

Hamish Nitschke also managed a three goal haul with the cream rising to the top for the Saints with class performers Sam Willis, Frazer Bradley, Jacob Carger and

Going bald is something I’ve just had to accept as a reality for me over the last ten years. As the son of a bald man, with many bald men in the family, I’ve always known that it was likely to be a part of my life, and I’ve prepared myself accordingly. But my journey through the baldness years has been very Knowingdifficult.you’regoing to go

Of course it wouldn’t. It’s only hair. Who really cares what I look like? And with that positive attitude in mind I started growing my hair back. As it got longer I thought, that seems quite nice. The longer it got the happier I got with it. At some points I thought it looked good. At other points I thought it looked terrible but in a way that I enjoyed.Andthen Covid hit. At this point it became my Covid hair. My aim changed from wanting to look good, to growing hair in a way I never had before. My aim changed to growing it as long and unruly as possible. I have been very successful in this endeavour. My hair has never been longer. It’s at a length where I could probably tie it up into a pony tail which

those photos are going to be up on your walls and mantle piece for the rest of your life.

SUCCESSFUL PREMIERSHIP

I’m talking about what to do when you start going bald.

bald is a real ticking time bomb. It puts a real time pressure on key life moments. Ideally you want to find your life partner while you have hair and look as good as you’re likely to ever look. You don’t want to end up in a situation where you haven’t locked something down and you now have unpredictable random patches of your scalp poking through your hair. Ideally if you’re going to go down the pathway of getting married one day, you want to have the best hair of your life available for the big day. You know

I’m really at a bit of a loss regarding what to do, so if you have any bright ideas, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

I wouldn’t say I’m a particularly vain person but I think I had quite nice hair. Generally fairly short on the side, with a bit more length on the top. I had to move on though, so my next haircut was a number two on the sides and a number four on top. In all honesty, it still looked pretty good. There was a rugged beauty about it, and it particularly went well with a beard.

But every now and then I see a photo of my head from the back and the doubts return. In these photos there is no doubt that I’m going bald. There is a significant bald spot visible for all to see. Should I start shaving again? From the front my hair looks quite good. It’s only up the back that there are issues. Probably my biggest worry is that people view my recent deliberate attempt to grow long, unruly hair as some sort of unsuccessful, misguided attempt to hide the fact I’m balding. I’d hate for anyone to think this is my version of a combover, not an ironic tribute to the Covid years. If it did disguise the bald spot, that would be great, but that’s not the motivation.

Saints go back to back in dominant display

With this in mind, one day while sitting with a bunch of my colleagues in the staff break room, I told my male workmates that if they thought I was getting to a point where I was noticeably bald, I needed them to let me know so I could start shaving my head. One colleague immediately responded, “it’s time”. While a little hurt, I appreciated the honesty and at least I could start adjusting to this significant change in my life.

the plan to shave before it looked ridiculous. But with the receding seeming to have stagnated I started wondering what my hair would be like if I started letting it go again. Would it hurt if I just let it go for a little while to see what it looked like?

opening half, Millicent blew the game wide open with an 11 goal to four second half that saw some cheeky Saints supporters playing the club theme song for much of the final quarter, well before the final siren.

I’m dealing with one of the most difficult decisions that any man has to make in his life. It’s an issue that most men have to confront at some point in their life. It’s actually something that we need to have some more open conversations about. We tend to avoid talking about it. We really

and impact in the community.

Coonawarra Vignerons executive officer Ockert Le Roux attended each of the five events and was thrilled to see the events draw large crowds of loyal and upcoming Coonawarra wine enthusiasts.

• Demonstrated immediate and medium-term impacts on participant health and wellbeing.

Held across five capital cities, the national tour can be hailed a great success following sold-out events across the country. The series of tasting events presented in the last two weeks of August included Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and finally Perth which wrapped up the roadshow event series on Sunday afternoon.

“As far as I am aware Coonawarra is the only wine region in Australia that hosts a Wine Tasting Event on this scale.”

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS:

Long time winery roadshow attendee Brian ‘Prof’ Lynn of Majella Coonawarra, has been exhibiting at the Coonawarra Cellar Door in the City events for more than two decades.

Throughout 2021-2022, extensive data was gathered to measure the success of the program’s initiatives

• The initiatives were found to achieve increased physical activity, inspired people to become healthier, increased knowledge about health and wellbeing, supported positive impacts on mental health, reduced social isolation and increased sense of belonging in community.

• Development of a mental health resource to support children, young people, and their families in identifying and accessing local mental health services.

“And it seems that the public were just as excited, with high consumer demand leading to waitlists for tickets to our sold out events,” Mrs Guyett said.

The Naracoorte Lucindale Wellbeing Program has evolved from a pilot program into a successful model, according to its 2021-2022 Evaluation Report.

“The Coonawarra Roadshow has been occurring in different formats for decades. Its an institution of wine promotion for our region and the consumers just love it.” Mr Lynn

• Establishment of a Community

Between 100 and 185 wines were showcased at the varying events with a great range of varieties and styles up for tasting. Coonawarra is famously known for producing predominately red varietals, which was evident in the wine list with 80% of wine poured being reds - from Cabernet Sauvignon to Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Red Blends and even Sparkling Reds.

The Evaluation Report, which was presented to Naracoorte Lucindale Council’s August meeting, reflects on a year of successes, key achievements and significant community impact in the 2021-2022 financial year.

Wynns Coonawarra winemaker Sue Hodder supported Mr Le Roux’s comments and shared the appreciation of consumers and wineries for the work that goes into delivering the events.

Mr Le Roux said what makes the event so much more unique is that it is not only cellar door staff that attend the tasting, but in most instances, the owners and/or winemakers in the room. Consumers and wine trade can therefore interact at a more intimate level to ask questions about our wines and the technical aspects of the wine making process and cellaring.

It’s been a long time coming, but with borders re-opened and interstate travel returning to what it was before the pandemic, Coonawarra’s wineries were back jet setting across the country this August to bring wine lovers of Australia the Coonawarra Cellar Door in the City national tour for the first time in two years.

Up to 26 wineries participated in the events which provides Coonawarra’s wineries the opportunity to showcase their wines to a national audience of consumers and trade alongside their counterparts. Ticketholders were presented with the opportunity, not only to taste a large assortment of Coonawarra wines, but to meet and chat to

the winemakers and faces behind each label.

• The program delivered 22 initiatives with the help of 38 delivery partners, reaching more than 1650 people.

The national wine tasting event attracted more than 1,00 wine enthusiasts across the five major cities and involved more than 50 winery staff at each event, consisting of a mix of winemakers, cellar door staff, boutique winery owners and Coonawarra vignerons.

Reference Group

Focus areas for the Program were increasing opportunities to be active, improving wellbeing through food, strengthening community engagement and social connectedness, and supporting positive mental health and wellbeing. The program is predominantly targeted at children, young people and their families; older adults; and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Wellbeing program gets tick of approval

“No other wine region has an enduring roadshow like this,” said Ms Hodder. “Wine enthusiasts from across the country contact us (wineries) all the time to relay their praises for the effort that our region goes to, to deliver these events”.

• Development of a Wellbeing Plan to align the direction of the Program with the overall regional and State level approach to health andOverwellbeing.thenext 12 months, the Naracoorte Lucindale Wellbeing Program will have a strong focus on new initiatives with a particular focus on improving wellbeing through food and supporting positive mental health and wellbeing.

“But Coonawarra’s white varieties are not to be underestimated”, Mr Le Roux said. Sparkling Whites, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and even Rosé were included during“Thereroadshow.arefantastic gems to be found amongst Coonawarra’s white wines,” Mr Le Roux said. “The cool climatic conditions of the region make for outstanding white wines.”Thewines presented at this year’s Cellar Door in the City events featured recent releases in the 2018-2021 vintage range, with wineries encourage to bring along a mystery bottle that is usually a back vintage or museum wine to demonstrate the age-ability of Coonawarra’s reds.

members couldn’t have been more excited to get back on the road and showcase their wines to the country.

• Integration of health promotion messages, in particular healthy

“The event is well supported by our members who range from boutique familyowned operations right up to internationally renowned corporate brands, such as Wynns Coonawarra, Lindeman’s Coonawarra and Katnook Estate,” Mr Le Roux said.

• The appointment of a Project Officer

Coonawarra will be on the road again in Augustnext year, with preparations underway to ensure that the event continues to provide the ultimate tasting experience. The roadshow committee is now reviewing our strategy to build on this year’s success.

said.

“Sydney was by far the most engaged audience with just shy of 450 ticket holders flocking to the event at the Sydney Town Hall,” Mr LeRoux said. “Over 300 wine enthusiasts attended events in Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, where attendees learned more about the Coonawarra wine region and our world-class wines.

misconception about rabbits is that they’re able to be housed in a hutch all the time. This is not the case – a hutch should serve as a temporary enclosure for your rabbits, and a safe place to sleep. If your rabbits are kept in a hutch, it must be attached to a run with plenty of space for them to run, jump, sit/stand upright, exercise and express normal rabbit behaviours. Your rabbits will also need at least a few hours a day of exercise outside of their hutch and run.

“Coming to work daily and never knowing what to expect from the workplace and client visits has taught me some pearlers.”

In 1993, when Helen began her time with Boandik, she was a personal care assistant on the Kessal wing of the Lake Terrace nursing home, which, at the time, had 30 Eventuallybeds.she made the leap to Boandik Community Care as a case“Themanager.peoplewho have had the most significant impact on me have been the first couple of directors of nursing and registered nurses that I worked with on the Kessal wing, along with my colleagues on the floor, particularly the staff that had the task of training me,” she said.

alongside has had an enormous, positive impact.”

Helen has for the past 20 years worked to support clients to be in their own homes for as long as they are

Case manager reflects on almost three decades in the aged care sector

Helen Warhurst has retired, taking with her 27 years of fond memories of her time with the non-profit organisation. It’saperiod that has seen countless changes occur at Boandik, with the building of the Crouch Street and St Mary’s homes, the creation of the state-of-the-art Community Wellbeing Centre, the redevelopment of independent living units and the expansion of community services.

“Boandik over my time have had a knack of attracting people at just the right time in their life,” Helen said. “I have loved the interactions, smiles, laughs, jokes, singalongs, the Christmas office and pod decorating.“Boandik on the whole has been such an amazing environment to work in for the last 29 years.

Helen intends to spend more time with her family and to make the most of her retirement.

“After all, the world is my oyster now,” she said.

“This week (last week) I have found it very hard to imagine not being here every working day, surrounded by my work mates.

“I haven’t cried today but over the past week or two have shed a tear with lovely peers, care workers, client and families, who have shared their beautiful, best wishes.”

She added that some of the most significant changes she had witnessed were the introduction of high-level manual handling practices, early intervention and orientation programs, the creation

of the dementia specialist roles at Boandik, and increased funding for Community Care recipients.

“Myable.fondest memories are of the people, the true care that is given from the heart,” Helen said.

Helen bids Boandik a fond farewell

In addition, structural changes, sanctions and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic were significant.

Strikers had star playmaker Dean McCarthy back and it was showing, as their structure and team cohesion was far superior with McCarthy directing traffic.

With a grand final berth right within touching distance for Strikers, West scored the equaliser with 20 seconds on the clock, sending the crowd into raptures and forcing overtime. Five minutes each way golden goal yielded no score,

contributor for West.

Redbacks ended up down two players as the cards continued to be dished out, but credit to the enormous work rate of centre half Anna Mitchell and fullback Isabel De Tomasi they were able to hold Tigers at bay.

Penalty shoot out decides final

There were some great match ups showing through in the second half, with Dale Tucker and Chris Callis well matched for pace. Gus Langsmith was a pest in defence, denying West the scoring chances they were creating.

It was an enthralling battle in Division 1 Women as Redbacks and Tigers looked to win their way through to meet West in the grand final this Redbacksweekend.drewfirst blood with a short corner conversion for the first goal. so the crowd were treated to a penalty shoot out. Through the first five shooters the score was still locked, so golden goal shoot out ensued, with Both goalies (Jordan Fabian and Roy Hutchesson) well up for the task, making multiple saves when their sides backs were against the wall. Brayden Burston scored twice for West and young Will Cameron was as cool as a cucumber scoring his shot. With David Vine redeeming his earlier miss with a clutch goal it came down to Millhouse, who had been brilliant all day, but West were able to pull out a comeback for the ages when Hutchesson made the save to send West through in an epic battle.

In the C Grade, Sheryl Halleday kept her sheet clean to guide her Tricksters team to a 7-4 win over Mark Devaney’s Demolition, while Jacob Ireland’s High Rollers engaged in a tense battle with Hard Knox who were without their number one player Tom Horrigan. Knox player Angus Billing could have sealed the result earlier when he appeared to be cruising to victory with a 2-0 lead over his High Rollers opponent John Laube. As has happened so often for Billing however, he appeared to tighten up under pressure in the closing stages, as Laube held his nerve and clawed his way back into the contest, eventually overpowering his exhausted and deflated opponent in 5 games.
