Getting down and dirty for the environment Beautification, education, biodiversity and sustainability have all collided in an exciting five year project that has taken its first steps this month. Instigated and facilitated by Nature Glenelg Trust, in conjunction with the Limestone Coast trail Committee, Mount Gambier High School, St Martins Lutheran College, Tenison Woods College and the City of Mount Gambier, the Mount Gambier Rail Trail has seen significant plantings of native species in a bid to spruce up the popular walking and cycling track, as well as educate the community regarding native flora and fauna. Nature Glenelg Trust senior ecologist Bryan Haywood said the creating of low maintenance native garden beds had been the brainchild of the trust, in conjunction with Tenison Woods College, and the trust utilised its expertise and resources to headline the project - planning, investigating, liaising with stakeholders and most importantly, growing 30 varieties of local native plants. “We were certainly in the best position to spearhead something like this considering what we do, the access to the nursery and that we already involved in community engagement and biodiversity, Bryan said. Earlier this month, two days of planting were undertaken by volunteers in the Bertha Street to White Avenue section of the Mount Gambier Rail Trail that has been earmarked for the transformation.

In the ensuing four years of the project, it is hoped schools, businesses and community groups will adopt particular sections of the rail trail, with overall project coordination conducted by Nature Glenelg Trust, including planning, plant sourcing, planting and scheduling of maintenance. “The education element of the project is also really important and not just for the school students but for the wider community, Bryan said. “Because of COVID restrictions this year we could not do everything we planned in terms of the revegetation project but we are

confident that will happen more as originally planned in the years to come. School visits, planting festivals and educational talks from Burrandies representatives regarding the cultural aspects of the project are all on the agenda as part of the five year plan. “It does have a broad education focus, talking about the ecology of the project, how plants and animals relate to each other and the various species we have in the district, Bryan said. “We did have to strip it back because of COVID but that will be an integral part of the project in years two to five. Having students and community members helping with the planting is as much about what they can learn as it is providing the labour for the project. Above (top) - Lu-Wei Spinks & Bryan Haywood from Nature Glenelg Trust. Community programs can tap into funding pool New look caravan park for Southend
Community organisations working to improve the health, education and income of residents living in the Glenelg Shire community are invited to apply to United Way Glenelg as it opens its Community Fund and Lewis Court Fund for 2021. The United Way Glenelg Community Fund will contribute close to $20,000 to groups working across one of the three areas of health, education and financial stability in increments up to a maximum of $5000. United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Carr is grateful for the support for the Community Fund from businesses, clubs and individuals who contribute to the Community Fund, particularly those who contribute as a Workplace Giver. Applications to the Lewis Court Fund should support projects and activities that directly benefit older members of the community.
“Funds will be available for projects to be delivered in 2021,” Ms Carr said. “It will require some reimagining on how projects can be delivered in what will be the “new normal”. Community Partners will need to adapt from previous delivery methods. It is an opportunity to be innovative.” Those applying are highly encouraged to discuss their project with United Way Glenelg before applying with applications closing on August 31. Guidelines and electronic Application Form available at www. unitedwayglenelg.com.au/grants Above - Members of the Casterton Polocrosse Club (standing) Hamish Carlin, Justin Carlin, Rick Smith, Harry Boyle (sitting) Jess Bowman and Dillon Carlin were thrilled to receive funds in 2020 to update their kitchen facilities allowing residents to utilise the club room for community functions.
The Southend-on-Sea Caravan Park is entering a new and exciting phase with work to commence shortly on the repatriation of the caravan park site and establishment of a Recreational Vehicle (RV) park. For some time, Wattle Range Council has been concerned about the coastal environmental impacts on the park with significant erosion impacting the ongoing operations and viability of the existing caravan park. “Council has resolved to commence a formal tender process for the operation and management of the Southend Caravan Park and Bush Camp as selfcontained RV facilities only,” CEO Ben Gower said. “Council is conscious of the importance of the park to the local economy and the aim is to have the park, including the Bush Camp, operational as soon as practicable. The park will be closed for a period of time to allow council to undertake remediation works, including the demolition of the amenities block, BBQ area and all relevant structures on the site.” Whilst the current amenities will be removed council has requested costings for the installation of a basic transportable toilet and amenity block.
New phone tower for Compton
People living and working in Compton will now have better phone service to make calls, browse the internet and stay connected with family and friends. The new mobile base station was launched last week and will significantly improve phone service in Compton. Member for Barker Tony Pasin (pictured) mobile phone coverage was no longer considered a luxury. “It’s a necessary tool for doing business, growing our economy and agricultural industries.” he said. “Not only does improved mobile service help our regional businesses but it’s a critical safety tool too.”
Wattle Range Council’s free Community Mulch Days have continued to show high levels of support by local residents with Penola hosting their first for the year on July 19 with a record high 44 trailers of mulch collected over the day, compared to an average of 26 trailer loads per mulch day in 2019. Millicent’s July mulch day also shared high participation from residents. This was second mulch day for the town this year and saw residents collect 109 trailer loads from the Saleyards Road site. Wattle Range CEO Ben Gower was pleased with the program’s popularity.“It is great to see this waste initiative continuing to grow,” he said. “It is anticipated that scheduled mulch days being held in both townships until the end of November will see even higher participation as the weather improves. All mulch collected during these community collection days prevents the need for this organic material to be sent to landfill, where it would produce greenhouse gases. This initiative re-purposes the green waste and recovers the resource as mulch to add organic material back into the soil, retain water and reduce weed growth in gardens.” The next scheduled Mulch Day for Penola is on Sunday, September 27. Further information on mulch days including dates, disclaimer forms and locations can be found at www.wattlerange.sa.gov.au/ wasteinitiatives.

The Riddoch and Main Corner Complex Coordinator Talie Teakle said Scinema, presented by Australia’s Science Channel, will present six short science films to enjoy. “Come and go as you please or join us for the full two and a half hours.” Ms Teakle said. BOOST YOUR METABOLISM Green tea, garlic, leafy greens, cinnamon, hot peppers, greek yoghurt, salmon & avocado are some of the foods recommended to ensure your metabolism is revved up and not sluggish.
ADD DRAWERS TO YOUR SHELVES Store your table linens — placemats, cloth napkins, or even the table runner you only use on Christmas — in durable plastic pins. The best part? They pull out so you won’t have to dig for anything in the way back & it is a neat, easy to access storage solution.
With spring just around the corner and buds starting to burst it’s time to finish all those end of winter gardening jobs. All pruning of roses, deciduous trees and fruit trees should be well underway, if not finished, and it is important to make sure you have applied a winter spray of lime sulphur straight after pruning to clean up any overwintering pests and diseases on roses that are not in leaf, fruit trees and ornamental trees. Also on the important list is copper sprays (a new non sprayer clogging Copper is now available too and we have been using it with great results) for stone fruit trees, such as peaches and nectarines, to avoid the attack of peach leaf curl, sometimes called curly leaf. If you had it last season you will definitely need to spray for it now as it does not go away if left untreated. Our sprayers have been going all day today as I write before the rain again, and we have also applied about another five doses to ensure all buds emerging at different intervals knock it on the head so ensure you do a few sprays, especially with all the rain we have had . Recent releases of the new curly leaf free peaches and nectarines have been a boon for home gardeners and now is the time to invest in an easy care tree if you are struggling to control the leaf curl and this spring we will release a new range of curl leaf free ornamental flowering peaches also, so keep an eye out for them. The time for planting dormant deciduous bare rooted trees and fruit trees is also drawing to a close. Stone fruit and almonds and apricots are bursting into life so this week should be the last opportunity to plant these from bare rooted trees. With our massive winter sale on too this is a good time time to grab a bargain. Potted trees are available all year round from places such as Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, so there is not the panic that there used to be in days gone by and often older, more mature trees are available too, so you aren’t missing out on fruiting time, but sometimes its still good to get them in with all the lovely rain to settle them in. Now is also the time to be applying the first of the season’s fertilisers and with all this lovely rain should be easily washed in. This should be applied around the drip line of mature trees and fruit trees and around 30cm out from the base of roses. At Limestone Coast Roses they have been having fantastic results with a new rose fertiliser that came on to the market a few years ago. It is now available to the home gardener as it was used mainly by us professional growers in the past. It has higher amounts of potash, so important for disease prevention and colour and quantity of blooms plus being coated with iron which is an added bonus in our predominantly alkaline soils,
By Calum Haygarth Landscape Architect & Horticultural Consultant should make your roses the glossiest they have ever been. The staff at Limestone Coast Roses are always eager to help with any enquiries you may have with regard to pruning roses and feeding, as all staff are fully versed on roses. The deciduous magnolias are looking great at the moment around the region and bursting forth with their goblet shaped blooms on the bare branches. Look out for specials such as 25% off all of these at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, including one of my favourites, the sought after Black Tulip and Yulan varieties and the new fairy magnolia as well. The three new varieties released recently - Genie, Cleopatra and Cameo - have also been very popular with Genie being a dwarf version of Black Tulip, so ideal for smaller gardens or pots and an earlier flowering variety. Come in for a look at their stunning display and grab a bargain at the same time. Most of the bare rooted, deciduous, ornamental trees are selling out and as they burst back in to life we they will have to be withdrawn them from sale for potting on. The national demand for plants during Covid through our online business has meant we are struggling to keep up with packing out orders as well as keeping stock on the ground. We have sold approximately 6 months worth of stock in around 6 weeks and the same goes for deciduous ornamental and fruit trees and grape vines are now the big one being hit hard.shortages of plants will definitely happen this spring so get planting now whilst you have good choices to choose from. Limestone Coast Advanced Trees Online Nursery that sends trees all over Australia, with local people missing out meaning its doubly important not to be slow in getting your trees planted. To prevent that from happening move fast for the End of Winter Sale on now and bag a bargain at the same time! We have over produced on some ornamental pear tree varieties this season at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees in Mount Gambier so the boss has said clear them out or we have to burn them. These over productions happen from time to time where we have good grafting success and we grade them rigorously when they come from the paddock to maintain the quality of our Trees . We still have good stocks along of our exclusive newly released dwarf ornamental pear for 2020 which is a dwarf version that “sported” from its parent tree and ever popular Chanticleer in our nursery some years ago. We have trialled it rigorously to ensure it maintains its smaller growth habit whilst still retaining all the great attributes of the other ornamental pears. (see facing page)Growing only 4 metres high and around 3 – 4 metres wide its ideal for courtyards, under powerlines and fence
lines where the much bigger growing Chanticleer is becoming a nuisance growing to 11m high ! Chinese cedars and many other trees are all reduced to clear as we ready ourselves for spring. End of season specials on mop top trees including Mop Top Ash and Catalpa reduced with heavy reductions on Mop Robinias at two for $139.90 or $79.95 each - stocks are limited and at these prices they will sell fast. Seed potato and raspberry planting time is also upon us with good stocks of potatoes to keep to plant later or plant an early crop now. We have received all our virus free seed potatoes for 2020 and huge amounts of Pontiacs that incorrect rumours have been saying they are hard to source but do get in soon as we are down to our last 50kg or so and is of course the biggest seller for us as we are renown in the region for our seed potatoes and low pricing. Weeping flowering cherries, massive cut leaf London Plane trees (see facing page) are all reduced to clear (see advert adjacent page) so don’t leave planting too long, make the most of the great rain to settle everything in. The new Old Potting Shed gift shop at Gardenarium in Mount Gambier caters for unusual gardening orientated gifts, wall art, gardening tools, oil drum animals from Africa and we have one Aussie Ute at ½ price for Fathers Day, a pretty cool esky for dad to wheel out full of coldies! (ideal for Father’s Day)
and cast iron fire pits in several sizes, ideal anytime of the year to warm up the outdoor living areas and of course outdoor furniture from all corners of the globe. Some stunning new solid mahogany birdhouses and dovecotes in limited numbers are also available. Normally this is not the time of year we think about purchasing outdoor furniture but they have a few specials on benches, arches and table and chair settings to clear to make way for the new season’s stock coming through and at these prices you won’t want to miss out. See advert or website for details. Gardenarium is situated at 167, Bay Road (Riddoch Hwy) 1.3 kms south of the Blue Lake roundabout or punch 167, Bay Road Mount Gambier into your GPS. We have been maintaining all our deliveries into Victoria as far as Geelong, Hamilton, Horsham and beyond at very cheap rates so you can email or ring through your orders at any time.
Showstopper Organisers held off as long as they could but eventually a call had to be made and the 2020 Mount Gambier Spring Show, which was due to be held on October 23 & 24, has been cancelled, with the Mount Gambier A & H Society now focussed on celebrating the event’s 160th year in 2021. Mount Gambier A & H Society president Danielle Tulak cited the current pandemic and the obligations outlined in the COVID Management Plan for public events and mass gatherings as the primary reasons to call off the 2020 event. “We felt it was unworkable to hold our two-day event,” Danielle said. “The decision to cancel our event has not been taken lightly, the management committee have explored all possible options over the last few months. At the end of the day the health and safety of our community, stakeholders, volunteers, and exhibitors is paramount. “With the current changes to gatherings and restrictions in place during the COVID-19 pandemic we have decided that cancellation is the most responsible decision at this time.”
While the spring show is the Mount Gambier A & H Society’s major event each year, the non-for-profit organisation also managed 72 acres of grounds for the community to use for events and exhibitions. “For that reason alone, we need to ensure we can remain viable in coming years,” Danielle said. “It is deeply disappointing to reach this decision; however, it has been carefully considered with the health of our community in the forefront.” The society is now turning its attention to improvements and maintenance around the showgrounds and planning towards the 2021 spring show. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the community of Mount Gambier and surrounds for the support and look forward to bringing you the 160th annual show on October 22 and 23 in 2021.”

I want to share something this week which is more facts than the humour that I generally aim for, and occasionally achieve. I’ve always had a fascination with the Hutt River Province and wanted to share a bit about it with you all. About fifty years ago the federal government brought in quotas restricting the amount of wheat that farmers could grow on their property. The change would have made the Casley family in Western Australia’s farm unprofitable. With this in mind, the family came up with an unconventional solution: declare independence, secede from Australia and create their own nation, with their own laws. With this momentous decision made, the Principality of Hutt River, an independent sovereign state came into existence on the 21st of April 1970. The principality is found about six hundred kilometres north of Perth, consisting of over 18000 acres of land, making it about the same size as Hong Kong. His Royal Highness Prince Leonard was elected (by himself) as the ruler of the new nation, and set about appointing various other family members to positions of importance as princes, princesses, dukes and duchesses. Having formally established his own country and no longer bound by the silly laws of the surrounding country of Australia, Prince Leonard set about continuing to sell his wheat in open defiance of the government’s quotas. Throughout this time the great man continued making a variety of legal arguments to assert why the Hutt River Province was now a completely independent nation and no longer bound by Australia’s legal system. With this in mind, he obviously didn’t need to pay taxes or meet the Australian government’s demands for his financial records. When Prince Leonard was prosecuted for failing to comply with the demands of the Australian Tax Office in 1977 he was left with no other option than to declare war on Australia. Several days after he had begun his thankfully bloodless war he
notified authorities of a cessation of hostilities. Once again he used these events to justify why under the terms of the Geneva Treaty Convention the Principality of Hutt River Province was an independent nation. Over the years the principality has developed its own currency, stamps, issued visas to people who wanted to enter the nation, not to mention had people represent the province in sports internationally including wife carrying, bog snorkelling and numerous others. True to the independence they’d declared, they didn’t claim anything from the Australian government, be that pensions, health benefits or child allowance. The sad part of the story comes in 2017 when the tax office decides that they don’t have to worry about Prince Leonard declaring war at 92 years of age. Bloody opportunistic cowards! The tax office took Prince Leonard back to court and was successful in having him ordered to pay about three million dollars in unpaid taxes. I hope he put a claim in for the unpaid pensions, Medicare and child allowance that he’d not claimed. Unable to pay the taxes, the principality’s land will now be sold to allow payment of the unpaid taxes. This is just so typical of governments. Squash the poor little guy. They’ve had fifty years to sort out a mess that they let drift on, and now after Prince Leonard and his wife Princess Shirley of Hutt have passed away, they decide to squeeze the cash out of their children. What a disgrace. A piece of unique Australian history, which pretty much sums up the Australian spirit is going to be torn apart. I see two options. The Australian government needs to purchase the property and donate it back to the royal family to be maintained as a unique tourist attraction moving forward. Option two would be someone shows me how to do one of those crowd funding things and we buy the Principality of Hutt River. We can move there, shut the borders of the province and wait this Corona virus thing out in peace. Until we’ve got this mess sorted at Hutt River, I’d like to announce that I’ve declared independence from the country of Australia. I declare my house as the Democratic People’s Republic of Tanselvania. I have just held a vote and am now the Grand Supreme Leader. I presently am sitting on my royal throne and will now issue my first royal command: shut the bloody door; were you born in a tent. If you’d like to declare independence from Australia, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com and we’ll start a revolution.

Local artists set to soar Unveiling of the Mount Gambier Regional Airport redevelopment is getting closer and the District Council of Grant is keen to include the community in celebrations when it opens. The Sky’s the Limit art competition is being hosted by council and competition finalists will be invited to display art at the new airport gallery link between the arrivals hall and conference area. The aim of the competition, and subsequent exhibition, will be to showcase local artists, while building a community connection with the airport. It is hoped that the community will visit the new facility to take in the redevelopment and view the exhibition, while enjoying some great food and drink from the Aero Espresso café. They will also be able to vote for a People’s Choice Award. The gallery link between the checkin counters, arrivals hall, café and conference area will be fitted with an art hanging system so that changing displays may be viewed by visiting public. Limestone Coast artists are invited to submit their artwork for The Sky’s the Limit art competition, which offers a total of $3750 in prize money. Method Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-forced. Grease a 6cm-deep, 20cm round cake pan. Line base and side with baking paper. Place 150g of the chocolate, 2½ cups of the coconut milk and the vanilla in a microwavesafe bowl. Microwave on HIGH (100%), stirring every 30 seconds, for 1 minute 30 seconds or until mixture is smooth. Sift flour, baking powder, sugar and cocoa into a large bowl. Make a well. Add chocolate mixture. Whisk to combine. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre of cake comes out clean. Stand in pan for 10 minutes. Turn onto a wire rack, top-side up, to cool completely. Place remaining chocolate and coconut milk in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on HIGH (100%), stirring every 30 seconds, for 1 minute 30 seconds or until mixture is smooth. Stand for 2 hours to thicken slightly. Split cake in half horizontally. Spread 1/2 the ganache over bottom half of cake. Top with remaining half. Spread remaining ganache over top of cake. Decorate with strawberries. Sprinkle with coconut. Serve.

THE HIDDEN EPIDEMIC OF BACK PAIN Mount Gambier Chiropractic Centre ask local residents to consider their health options Australians are being asked to consider their options for health intervention on back pain after it was found that an estimated 11,000 people on The Limestone Coast are impacted by the potentially debilitating disorder. 1. According to the Institute of Health & Welfare, around 4 million Australians (16% of the population) have back problems. It is estimated that 70–90% of people will suffer from low back pain at some point in their lives.1 Local chiropractor, Dr Joseph Pang believes that while pain is the main symptom, we know low back pain is now the leading cause of disability worldwide.2. “The challenge for someone suffering from back pain is they understandably think the only way to treat the problem is through medication. What Australians need to know is that they have options when it comes to their spinal health, and to consider a chiropractor for a drug free alternative to alleviate pain,” Dr Joseph said. According to Pain Australia, with chronic pain being one of the most common reasons for people of working age to leave the workforce, 3. it’s important that Australians understand all their options for treating their pain. The focus on back pain comes as the Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA) launches a new national campaign asking all Australians to ‘Consider a Chiro’ when it comes to ailments such as back pain, neck pain and headaches. The ‘Consider a Chiro’ campaign was born out of research that showed Australians were unaware of the type of support and services that the profession provides. “Once a person comes in for a consultation with a chiropractor, they are likely to return for future care. However, what we also know is that for a lot of people they are unclear about the type of care chiropractors can provide. It is on this point that we know more work needs to be done,” said Dr Joseph. Mundulla turned the tables on North Gambier, turning its round three four point loss into a 21 point win at Vansittart Park, setting up an epic final round of matches in the Limestone Coast Football League with the top four to be decided this weekend. The Moots came out of the blocks firing, dominating the clearances and using the ball with precision into the wind, notching up three goals, including majors to James Hinge and Tim McIntyre, who were both among Mundulla’s best on the day, to catch a shell shocked Tigers on the hop. North Gambier coach Justin McConnell, who never wastes a possession, was the recipient of a lucky bounce that evaded Mundulla defender Tom Gaden and saw McConnell’s first touch result in a goal from the goal square, with Declan Carmody then showing his class with a snap off hands to see North back in the hunt with those two late goals. Mundulla responded early in the second when Nick Gregurke slotted a shot from the boundary before a trademark McConnell lead and contested grab saw North respond almost immediately. A Luke Wiese snap extended Mundulla’s lead before two 50m penalties against Mundulla saw Jake Schutz and Michael Telford, who, along with Nick McInerney, was winning plenty of the ball at stoppages, both made no mistake, and at the main break it was a seven point game in favour of the visitors. Mundulla again opened strongly against the breeze with an accurate Nick Mosey snap but again it was a quick reply from McConnell, again reading the play better than anyone else to score basically from the goal line, Reagan Tink, who was busy all game, working hard in the packs and also providing good outside run for the Moots, then won a free kick and goaled to give Mundulla a nine point lead going into the last. As they had all match, Mundulla scored early with Daniel Noll making no mistake from 40m out to extend the margin to 15 points but when McConnell again just read the ball best to snap truly, and McInerney and Michael Telford continued to win plenty of the ball, North’s long standing ability to overrun sides loomed large. But the chance of a North comeback was stymied by the experienced heads from Mundulla who were patient with their ball use and refused to cough up possession, playing a kick mark game that saw the ball end up in the hands of Hinge, inexplicably on his own 20 metres out from goal for some time before a team mate finally spotted him up ad gave him the chance to slot his second for the match. With the lead out to 16 points, Schutz and Nicholas Mark showed great desperation in defence for the Tigers and eventually North was able to clear the ball from Mundulla’s 50, with McConnell again presenting strongly on the lead and nailing the finish to end up with five for the day. But Mundulla remained composed and when the siren went it was best on ground McIntyre lining up for a goal after the siren to make it a 21 point final margin. It was the usual suspects for Mundulla – McIntyre, Gregurke, Hinge and McGrice – that led the way for the victors, while McInerney was a standout for the Tigers, with Schutz and Jenner working hard defensively, and Michael Telford winning
plenty of the ball. In the big man department, Jacob Grosser and Sam Stafford had an enthralling duel, with both having an influence at the contest as well as around the ground with some strong contested marks. South Gambier continued its winning streak with a Brett O’Neil led victory over East Gambier, while Kalangadoo was in control all day against winless Kybybolite. This weekend’s round of matches sees North Gambier taking on Kybybolite in a bid to force its way back into the top four, while Kalangadoo will be determined to turn the tables when the Magpies host South Gambier to ensure they secure a finals berth. The other match sees East Gambier hosting Mundulla in another match that can still shape the final placings. Above (top) - Jacob Grosser (Mundulla) and Sam Stafford (North) battle it out in the ruck. Above (bottom) - Best on ground Tim McIntyre clears the ball from defence.
Millicent’s Tom Hutchesson has an impressive football resume and he added AFL player to that resume last week when he debuted for the GWS Giants in their clash with Sydney. The 25 year old, who has a Brian Hennessy Medal, Mick Ryan Medal and premiership medal in the cabinet from his Western Border Football League career, had a seven disposal game. His selection was announced by Dartmoor recruit Jeremy Cameron at a team dinner for Isaac Cumming’s birthday. Tom’s partner Nat Potter, who is a multi-premiership nebtaller for Millicent, was part of the announcement on a laptop

MG PLASTERERS SECBL MEN Panthers came out all guns blazing in this contest, with only five players available they piled on 125 points with all five players scoring 20 points or better. Matt Black and Josh Berry had impressive scoring game for the Bulldogs, however the Bulldogs defence was no match for the Panthers who scored from inside and out. Panthers 125 (K Tipene 30, J Walker 30, B Rathjen 24) d Bulldogs Red 76 (M Black 24, J Berry 23, P Loring 10) Cats backed up a good win in round three with an impressive performance against Bulldogs Blue. Frazer Bradley had himself a game with 28 points going head to head with Bulldog Simon Berkefeld, who also had 28. The game was in the balance going part way through the third quarter before Cats found momentum and some scoreboard breathing room. Cats 88 (F Bradley 28, J Murphy 20, K Bradley 14) d Bulldogs Blue 77 (S Berkefeld 28, D Hackwill 17, B Young 14) Toby de Wit showed his class with 32 points against the fast paced Roos, however he simply did not have the support to keep his side in the contest. Kayn Shepherd showed some class for Cougars using his size to create some opportunities. It was Roos who played out of sync for much of the game before finding their rhythm and picking up their running game in the second half creating some easy opportunities. Roos 84 (Mony Makoi 23, Malok Makoi 22, D Bachmann 13) d Cougars 56 (T de Wit 32, K Shepherd 10, D Kuring 7, J McGregor 7) MG PLASTERERS SECBL WOMEN Saints went into the contest with star Jasmin Howe out with an ankle injury and they definitely missed her leadership and offensive output. Both teams struggled to put the ball in the hoop consistently as this game became a defensive struggle. It was Cougars who rose victorious in another close contest. Young gun Sarah Ritter had 13 points to lead her side, while Olivia Fuller worked hard for her 17 points but it was not enough to ger her side over the line. Cougars 40 (S Ritter 13, C Horrigan 9, M Horrigan 7) d Saints 38 (O Fuller 17, L Schultz 11, L Haines 6) Cats bounced back after a close loss in round three to get back on track against the Panthers. The Winter sisters combined for 53 points and they had a considerable impact on both ends of the floor. Joey Jones and Sam Loughead each had 12 for Panthers who couldn’t string together enough plays to stay in this contest. Cats 70 (E Winter 23, G Winter 18, A Winter 12) d Panthers 48 (J Jones 12, S Loughead 12, T Bryant 11)

Right- North Gambier coach Justin McConnell (pictured looking for a team mate during the weekend clash at Vansittart Park) made the most of his limited touches with five goals at the weekend to streak to the head of the Limestone Coast goal kicking table but the Western Border Football League Tigers were outclassed by the KNTFL Tigers - Mundulla - and now risk missing the interim league’s finals series.

LOCAL Rookie rider takes SPORT out first victory SOUTH EAST VETERANS GOLF
Naracoorte was the venue for 68 veteran golfers on a magnificent winter day, perfect for golf. Thirty-six was the winning score in both divisions, wuth first division won by local Murray Telfer on a countback from Kym Sutherland, of Attamurra, and Tony Steen, of Blue Lake. Second division went to Gerry Holmes, of Naracoorte, playing his first vets game, from John Kirby, Attamurra, 35 points, and then a string on 34, the countback going to another Naracoortian, Bob Davies. It was a special day for Roy Mitchell, of Beachport, and on his 90th birthday, he had 33 points. Roy has chalked up more than 400 games playing vets and still has a handicap of 23. He shows that golf is a game for all ages with his 400 game streak stretching over two decades. Four NTPs were available going to Tony Bishop, Bob O’Connor, Tony Steen and Graham Robinson. The Ross Orchard trophy was taken by John Miles and Mike Lyons. The ball rundown was for 28 or better. The next outing is at Blue Lake on August 24 followed by Bordertown on Sept 7.
A small field of 10 riders lined up for race 3 in the Mount Gambier Cycling Club winter series. Jen Buckland, riding in her second race, rode off 15 minutes in front of the three scratchmen into a strong southeasterly wind. This would normally favour the back markers who are stronger, but it wasn’t the day for them. Phil McGee and Mike Bakker left the start line seven minutess behind the limit marker, with Gerard Coote, Dean Zeven and Bruce McLaughin rounding out the middle bunches. It was a race between Matthew Opperman, Nick Kidman and Colin Weatherill as to who would take the fastest time honours as they caught second scratch 15kms into the race. All riders worked well together with the hope to catch the remaining riders. With 5kms to go, it was down to Kidman, Opperman, Zeven and Coote who rode away but unfortunately didn’t catch Buckland, giving Jen her first club win with a ride time of 54mins. Fastest time went to Opperman with a ride time of 39mins. Only three juniors rode this week and it was decided to host
MOUNT GAMBIER NETBALL ASSOCIATION 2020 RESULTS ROUND NINE
a scratch race, with all riders starting the race off together. Molly Opperman, Elmer and Eddie Buckland were encouraged to learn some basic rules of road racing – taking turns, using their drink bottle during the race and learning how to sit in a race in windy conditions. At the last 2km, the riders were encouraged to ride away to the best of their ability. Elmer Buckland took out the junior event from Molly Opperman and then Eddie Buckland. Above - Fastest time winner Matthew Opperman and line honours winner Jen Buckland, her first win since joining the club.
