goes virtual Last year’s Mother’s Day Classic in Mount Gambier attracted more than 300 participants and netted $10,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, while also awareness for vital breast cancer research. With an expanded, enthusiastic committee on the job for the 2020, expectations were high but the event has now moved to the virtual world so while the fundraising tally might not be as significant, still holding the event is critical and organisers are hopeful people will still register in their droves to be part of the 2020 event. Merchandise is also still available. Participants are being encouraged to still register and complete the 4km or 8km walk or run between now and Mother’s Day.

“We really want people to still do it and put up photos or a video or post about their walk on the local or national facebook page,” committee member Chris O’Callaghan said. “It is about raising money and awareness but it is also about making sure people are being active and healthy – that is an important part of it as well.” The Mount Gambier event has always enjoyed strong community participation as well as generous support from local business and while the organising committee would still welcome any of that assistance, they have opted not to chase the usual sponsorship and donations in 2020.

“Last year we had a lot of sponsorship and support and donations from business but we didn’t really want to go down that path in the circumstances but if businesses still want to donate we would be more than happy with that.” The Mount Gambier committee has online auctions on the go and also put together a variety of gift boxes for sale, courtesy of handmade desserts from Tam’s Bake House and Hollick Wines, which will be delivered on Mother’s Day. Chris O’Callaghan, who lost his wife Jayne to breast cancer five years ago, is in his second year as part of the committee, after helping foundation committee members Pete Collins and Simon Brook pack up the event a couple of years ago. “I said I would like to help one year and the next January I got the call from Pete,” Chris said. “We had a short lead in last year but still were able to have a great event and we were really hoping to ramp it up

this year with some new committee members on board. We just hope people still register this year and we are going to be back bigger and better in 2021.” For the O’Callaghan family, the Mother’s Day Classic has always been a special day and for Chris and his three children, Daniel, Emma and Louise, always look forward to it. “It is hard to believe it’s been five years (since we lost Jayne) but we are doing well,” Chris said. “We could dwell on the fact that she’s not here and we have our moments, no doubt “...Jayne was such a positive person and brought such happiness and joy to everyone else and she will live through us forever, especially the kids.” ..” Chris O’Callaghan

This time it’s personal It was just over two years ago that Lyndal Redman suffered unimaginable loss when she suffered a miscarriage. For Lyndal, who was born and bred in Rendelsham, and her husband Jamie Smith, the joy of expecting their first child was shattered by the devastating loss. Dealing with a FIFO working situation and not knowing exactly how to deal with the death of a child, Lyndal did what was natural to her – she talked to those close to her. “I was quite open and honest and did talk about it,” Lyndal said. “That was the first time I found out other people I knew had gone through it – family had gone through it, friends had gone through it.”

“…hopefully allow both women and their partners the opportunity to be able to talk about their loss freely…” Lyndal Redman

For Lyndal, it was an eye opener that miscarriage was such a taboo subject and that was when her personal life intersected with her professional life with the creation of the online documentary You Are Not Alone. “Because I was so open about it, my question was why can’t you talk about it,” Lyndal said. “There is no doubt the miscarriage was confronting and even now, two years down the track, I still think about it.” So Lyndal ran her idea for a documentary series past a couple of friends, testing the waters for what would clearly be a passion project for the media industry heavyweight who has more than 15 years experience in the media landscape. The project, which was officially started late 2017, was kickstarted by the overwhelming response to a May 2018 interview Lyndal posted to facebook, talking about her own experience. Plenty of her South East

based friends saw it and in a short space of time it attracted 13,000 reaches and 8000 views. “It confirmed for me that a documentary was something people would want to watch,” Lyndal said. “Women in their 50s and 60s were telling me how back then you didn’t even really mention losing a baby – you just went on with life. It got them to talk about it a little bit more. That’s when I decided I have to do this.” And so the Your Are Not Alone project was born, taking two years to put together as Lyndal crafted together her own story with those of other couples who have suffered a miscarriage – in some instances, multiple miscarriages – with the series achieving exactly what Lyndal wanted, shining a light on the stigma around miscarriage and giving a voice to the otherwise voiceless. The 5 x 5 minute online documentary series for whimn.com.au explores the loss and grief surrounding miscarriage,

“…stories like these are powerful to start conversations that make us think…” Eliza Cracknell (In Her Own Mind Network editor) and the impact it has on individuals and families and has also recently snared some Screen Australia funding to help bring the project to fruition. Following the stories of those with firsthand experience, the series also features perspectives from obstetricians, researchers and support organisations and explores isolation through miscarriage in some of the most remote regional areas of Australia. “We wanted to break down the stigma around miscarriage and hopefully allow both women and their partners the opportunity to be able to talk about their loss freely,” Lyndal said. You Are Not Alone was produced by her own production company Redman Media with an all-female production crew including Lyndal as director and producer alongside producer Caroline Winter (ABC) and Lauren Hillman (Poh’s Kitchen, The Daters ABC). “It has been two years developing the project and to have the backing of such an important funding body such as Screen Australia was truly amazing” said Lyndal. Telling her story through the medium of film was the perfect fit for Lyndal, who, while she had plenty of the skills to bring to the project, was still challenged to hone her interview skills and other more front of camera duties, rather than her usual role behind the lens.

Not sure what she wanted to do career wise after completing Year 12, Lyndal did head to university but it wasn’t a great fit. “I’m a bit of a practical learner so I didn’t really enjoy university or the lifestyle,” Lyndal said. While Lyndal was keen to find her way into the media industry, she certainly took a circuitous route, moving from a shoe sales position to a sales role at a television station. “So I started my television career even though it was not at all in the area that interested me,” she said. But it gave her the foot in the door she needed and learning the ropes of the industry quickly ensued as she wrote scripts for the ads and went out on the shoots with the cameraman.

Then came her first real break – a vacant video production role that the station was struggling to fill. “It was the area I wanted to end up in and I said train me up and I’ll do it,” she said and so started a career, much of it trial and error and learning very much on the job, and forging a career behind the camera as a rare commodity, a female camera operator, as well as her skills in the editing suite. Her career took her all over Australia in regional and metropolitan stations before returning to Adelaide, working at a number of stations as well as The Advertiser, in the early days of newspapers starting to produce video content for its online platforms. “I moved around a fair bit and every time I moved I picked up different skills and different ways of doing things,” she said. “I got to learn from people who have been in the industry a lot longer then I had and it was a great way to learn.” A serious shoulder injury saw Lyndal move from behind the camera, where she had forged an impressive resume and reputation, and into the editing suite working in news and current affairs, before redundancy became the catalyst for her starting her own production company, picking up work from as far afield as the UK, working on crime documentaries and also corporate work in the public relations sphere. It was five years ago she decided to focus 100 percent on her company and producing her own work not working for other people. “I decided to put all my energy into my business and I haven’t looked back,” she said, now having the opportunity to tell her own personal story in the Your Are Not Alone documentary series. The series will be released later in the year on the With Her In Mind Network, Australia’s leading digital women’s network. With Her In Mind Network editor Eliza Cracknell said they were honoured to be able to provide a platform for Lyndal’s documentary. “Miscarriage not only impacts one in four women but can also have a wider reaching influence over all society and family units,” Eliza said. “Stories like these are powerful to start conversations that make us think, challenge and change taboos.”

New social media option for young people

Paying it forward Good News Glenelg is a project highlighting the generous acts of kindness going on throughout the Glenelg Shire community. Late last month staff at the Casterton Care Plus Pharmacy (pictured above left) were treated to free coffees from a local cafe, with one community member generously paying for their order. Working together with the Bush Nursing Centre, Dartmoor General Store (pictured above right) has also gone above and beyond, now offering increased services for elderly and at risk community members, including providing meals and grocery delivery.

Wattle Range Council has set up a new facebook page to keep local young people engaged in lieu of what would have been a raft of Youth Week activities recently. Throw the Wattle Range Youth Engage page a like ready to access the cool youth content set to be posted. Youth Week 2020 couldn’t go ahead so we have decided to share some of the goodness we had planned, but online. The page will see young people learning some new skills from the incredibly talented locals that have volunteered to share their cleverness with the community. Bridge makeover completed

A project to address maintenance and erosion has been completed on the bridge over the Naracoorte Creek at the corner of the Cadgee Road/Wild Dog Valley Road intersection. This will increase the life expectancy of the bridge and reduce future costs for Naracoorte Lucindale Council. The work carried out by council’s contractors included: • Stabilising the creek bank to prevent further erosion and eliminating any impact to Cadgee Road; • Addressing erosion that had been occurring behind the bridge walls (which had caused the road to drop, creating a bump as vehicles crossed the bridge); • Re-levelling the road with asphalt to remove the bumps in the road; • Stabilising concrete and painting

the concrete to increase the bridge’s lifespan and appearance; • Upgrading rusty old guard rails to improve the safety and appearance at the intersection.

Recycled runway competition adds a new dimension This year’s Recycled Runway competition is set to go ahead with new categories have been introduced to cater for the increased number of entries ranging from beginners to experts. This year will see the introduction of a ‘un-modelled’ category and the Battle of the Schools trophy will be hotly contested for the second time. The un-modelled category provides an opportunity for contestants to design and create non fashion items with entries being displayed for judging by the public. “We are looking to collaborate with local businesses to display the un-modelled items as well as dress their windows to this year’s theme of Art Deco inspired by Agatha Christie novels” said committee member Leanne Dunn. Recycled Runway, in its eighth year, is an initiative that encourages creativity, sustainability and connected communities. Further details can be found on Facebook @ RecycledRunwayMountGambier. Paper, rock, are you kidding?... The Canadian Superior Court recently ruled that a man who had incurred a debt of $575 000 in a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors would not have to pay the money. Apparently the key factors the decision rested on was whether the bet was excessive and whether Paper, Rock, Scissors is a

game of chance or in fact a game that involves skill. So many layers to this one; I’m not really sure where to start. This is stupid on so many different levels. Let’s start with, is this really the sort of issue that should be finding it’s way to a country’s superior court? As I understand it, an inferior court had previously made a decision that the man had to pay the $575 000 he had somehow lost on Rock, Paper, Scissors. Surely that’s not a rational decision in the first place. The next thing we need to talk about is gambling over half a million dollars on Rock, Paper, Scissors. I think it’s fair to say that you may have a gambling problem if you lose your children’s inheritance on Rock, Paper, Scissors. To be fair based on the current world situation you might be able to understand wagering on insignificant chance events. But if several hundred thousands of dollars are at stake, I think you may be a little out of control. Let’s say that you do get to a point where you are betting several hundred thousand dollars on Rock, Paper, Scissors, I think that really needs to be on ESPN. I wrote recently about watching the Stupid Robot Fighting League, Slippery Stairs, and Dead Diving Championships on the world leader in sports, and surely high stakes Paper, Rock, Scissors would be just as entertaining on the idiot box. Just to be clear, this game was not played while we are all socially isolating, it actually happened in 2011 believe it or not.

On a related note, I was watching the 2007 world cup stacking championships last week. I’m assuming ESPN were showing that one because it was such a classic cup stacking championship, in comparison to the thirteen years since. Exploring the story a little more, when the man lost the bet in 2011 he took out a mortgage on his house so he could pay his debt. Can you imagine that discussion at the bank. “So why are you looking to get a loan, sir? Buying a holiday house?” “No I lost a game of Paper, Rock, Scissors.” Consider this. He didn’t even challenge the decision in court until six years later. He went and got a loan from his bank, before he decided that maybe he should challenge such a ludicrous decision in a court of law. Something I’m wondering about this one is, was it the result of saying double or nothing a few too many times…or was it an occasion where someone should have in fact used double or nothing? Like, did they start gambling a dollar, the guy lost, and then he just kept saying double or nothing and got on a particularly bad roll? Or was the initial wager $575,000 and the guy should have kept saying double or nothing until he won a game, but unexpectedly chose not to take the option? If you couldn’t get out of your $575,000 Paper, Rock, Scissors game

Lifting the lid on anxiety

with clever use of double or nothing, surely you challenge your opponent to best of five. If you’re still losing, then surely it’s best of seven. Still down? Best of nine. You simply can’t walk out of your Paper, Rock, Scissors game owing hundreds of thousands of dollars. If that means you’re playing best of 113, so be it. Realistically I simply don’t think these gentlemen understood the spirit of Paper, Rock, Scissors. I think they’ve missed the point. It’s a game that’s meant to decide who eats the last piece of pizza, or who gets the first turn on the motorbike, or who gets to serve first. When the ancient Romans invented the game, they never intended it to be played for money. Well, I’ll leave you all to ponder this one. I’ve quit my job and am currently in training preparing to join the World Paper, Rock, Scissors tour. You’ll be able to see me on ESPN when the next pandemic hits. Email me at robbietansel@gmail. com if you know the official launch date for Polly Waffles. Nothing to do with Paper, Rock, Scissors, but I’ve got to get me one.

Sarah pulls at the thread of accepted definitions of anxiety, and unravels the notion that it is a difficult, dangerous disease that must be medicated into submission. Ultimately, she re-frames anxiety as a spiritual quest rather than a burdensome affliction, a state of yearning that will lead us closer to what really matters. Practical and poetic, wise and funny, this is a small book with a big heart. The Greatest

W O SHOn Earth

There was something missing on the Limestone Coast landscape last weekend – the huge marquee on the grounds of The Barn, housing not only Australia’s best school based jazz musicians but some of the best jazz musicians in the world. For the first time in the event’s history it did not go ahead, meaning thousands of school students and their support staff and parents did not converge on Mount Gambier for what has become a behemoth event on the national and international jazz calendar. Almost a decade ago, some of the event’s key drivers, many of whom are still front and centre today, reflected on the evolution of the award winning event that has every intention of being back bigger and better than ever in 2021 - we share their walk down memory lane on the litte jazz event that could.

A Walk Down Memory Lane • Dale Cleves

James Morrison

Along with Lee O’Connor, Dale Cleves (pictured top right) can stake a claim to being the mastermind behind Generations in Jazz. And he’s had his nose to the wheel developing the event and ensuring its long term future in this region. In tandem with the Generations in Jazz board and countless volunteers who play a role in the three day feast of jazz, Dale has seen the event pass the test of time/ The inaugural Generations in Jazz was held in 1982. “It was Lee’s idea and it was supposed to be a one off as a testimonial to our fathers,” Dale said. “A school from Adelaide where Malcolm Bromley was involved were also involved and that’s where the name Generations came from because there was young and old.” It was then through Dale’s friend Bruce Raymond, who was the chair of SA Great that the connection with James Morrison eventuated. “He rang me about the possibility of James getting involved and rest as they say is history,” Dale said. So in 1989 the Generations concept

James Morrison (main photo & below left) is a name synonymous with jazz so it seems only fitting that his name is so inextricably linked with Mount Gambier’s Generations in Jazz. It was almost 30 years ago that James attended the fledgling event as a guest artist – it was basically a small showcase and not a shadow of the extravaganza that now takes over The Barn’s OB Flat grounds every May. “There was talk of having some kind of competition aspect to it – it had just been a get together and a jam,” James said. “They seemed like the right kind of people and just loved the music and so I was happy to get involved.” And so the James Morrison Jazz Scholarship was born and has now grown in stature to be one of the most sought after opportunities of any young jazz performer in Australia. “I guess we had dreams,” James said. “But I don’t think we knew what would happen and I don’t think anyone thought it would just keep growing like this.” CONT. OPP. PAGE

“...it creates more of a carnival atmosphere...” Dale Cleves was resurrected and the James Morrison scholarship was introduced, the stage band competition followed that and then the vocal scholarship and vocal ensemble sections were added. “We would’ve hoped it would keep growing but it would be fair to say we didn’t expect it to keep growing as well as it had,” Dale said. What started as a six band competition has evolved into the world’s largest high school band festival and the vocal ensemble award shows every sign of heading the same way after a strong debut in 2011. A sobering thought for organisers is research conducted by Dale around four years ago, showed the then

contingent of 50 bands entered in the stage bands award represented only five percent of what’s actually out there. “I have always been conscious that we could be under attack – whether it be from larger regional centres or a capital city – it’s pretty competitive out there,” Dale said. “As a board we needed to leave this in good hands because it still has a huge potential market and we are doing a lot of forward planning to ensure it stays right here.” Dale credits James Morrison with a lot of the innovations that have improved the Generations experience over the years, most particularly the moving of the competitions to one site. “It creates more of a carnival atmosphere and people can walk from one performance to the other,” he said.

“...it would be fair to say we didn’t expect it to keep growing as well as it had...” Dale Cleves

The Greatest FROM OPP. PAGE And the good news for local organisers is James has remained committed to the Generations weekend but he is as determined as ever to keep it in its birthplace. “Mount Gambier is where it belongs,” he said. Since coming on board, James has only missed a couple of Generations in Jazz weekends and that has been reluctantly. “My schedule has sometimes not allowed

SHOW On Earth

“...I don’t think we knew what would happen and I don’t think anyone thought it would just keep growing like this...” James Morrison it but it is absolutely a permanent booking on my calendar,” he said. Jazz is a genre passed from generation to generation and that’s why James is so active in his role in schools and why he feels events like

Generations in Jazz are so important. “I learned from the likes of Don Burrows and weekends like this allow aspiring jazz musicians to learn from a variety of performers – it’s a very inspiring weekend,” he said.

Daryl Somers

Graeme Lyall

Daryl’s association with Generations in Jazz dates back to the early 1990s – he was an invited performer. “I haven’t been able to make it for a few years but it was great to be back this year (2011) and I could see the difference, it was unbelievable,” he said. “The kids, the bands, just the whole set up – it’s come a long way.” Daryl didn’t perform in 2011 but rather took the pressure off musical director John Morrison by taking over compering duties. “I would love to play again at Generations though,” he said. “It’s a world class event and that’s not overstating it.” For Daryl the growth of the event is exciting if not surprising and he’s glad to hear organisers are keen to just allow that expansion to continue. “I remember when there were 15 bands – now there’s 109,” he said. “What Dale Cleves and his team have developed here is just amazing.” Being around thousands of committed young musicians is what Daryl loves so much about the Generations weekend. “There’s so much going on in kids’ lives these days and this is just such a healthy

Graeme Lyall, who ended up calling Mount Gambier home, has become almost as synonymous with the event as James Morrison and Daryl Somers. An adjudicator for years, Graeme provided a lion’s share of the James Morrison Scholarship finalists and winners during his tenure at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. “When I first came here there were six finalists and no bands and when the band section was started there were six,” Graeme said. “This year (2011) we had 109 groups making it the biggest high schools band festival in the world.” And Graeme doesn’t doubt that growth will continue. Arguably no one is better placed to assess whether the standard of Generations has also improved over the years. “The rising of the standard has been gradual and as Year 12s leave bands drop away and have to rebuild,” he said. But when you consider schools are now implementing instrumental lessons and band components into the curriculum so much earlier, the standard has the potential to spike. What Graeme does love is the

pursuit,” he said. “To see so much determination, to see kids applying themselves so totally to the music – I think it’s great jazz gets such a look in.” Daryl, who is patron of the event, also believes its future must be in Mount Gambier. “It’s such a unique event and there really is nothing like it anywhere else in the world,” he said. “The fact someone the calibre of Gordon Goodwin not only came but was so impressed he wants to find room in his schedule to return next year is testament to the standing of this event.” Daryl genuinely believes it could become an international event. “I think having someone respected and so well connected like Gordon Goodwin spruiking about Generations could well put it on the map,” he said.

“When I was in school there was no jazz, no band – I had to start one myself,” James said. Now he watches as more than 100 bands vie for the stage band awards. And he definitely enjoyed the addition of an international guest adjudicator in 2011. “It was great to have Gordon (Goodwin) at this year’s Generations,” James said. “All the kids know him and his music and I’m glad he’s talking about coming back.”

relatively new one stop shop feel of the Generations weekend. “When I first started the bands were spread all over the city but now people can come to one location and here whatever and whoever they want,” he said. “It also gives the division four bands a chance to go and listen to a division one band and just see where they need to be heading.’ Schools that bring multiple bands can now support each other and as a result the atmosphere is even more electric. “Generations now gets big audiences because of the experience of wall to wall music all weekend,” Graeme said.

Looking to the future… The Generations in Jazz organisers are already moving full steam ahead on securing the guest artists for the 2021 event and will be taking their own walk down memory lane between now and May next year on their social media platforms with regular posts about the history of the phenomenal event.

The spin-offs The Generations in Jazz festival also saw other unexpected spin offs, the establishment of the Generations in Jazz Academy at Tenison Woods College, that saw the country’s best jazz musicians doing a gap year through program that ran from 2010 to 2014, and the 2015 opening of the Jazz Morrison Academy of Music – a tertiary institution housed in the Old Town Hall that has only enhanced Mount Gambier’s jazz credentials. The Generations in Jazz Academy at Tenison Woods College was a Year 13 course that was recognised by the University of Adelaide and counted towards completion of the Diploma in Jazz. The James Morrison Academy of Music had been a long held dream for James, who had been working in schools, universities and with students across the world for more than three decades. “Over that time you see things happening that are great and you remember them,” James said, “You also have those moments where you go ‘if I had a school I would do it like this’ and in the end you have a long list of ‘if I had a school’ items on your list so I decided I better do a school.” To bring a project of this magnitude to fruition was a collaboration like no other for James, off the stage, and there were three keen project partners – the University of South Australia, the South Australian Government and the City of Mount Gambier. Unis SA accredited the nation’s newest music school in time, the State Government provided seed funding to the tune of $500,000 to help get the self –funded project up and running and the City of Mount Gambier secured the Old Town Hall for the music school and fast tracked the refurbishment of the historic landmark. Arguably the question James fielded most often in the establishment of his own school was ‘Why Mount Gambier’? His initial response was, it was never going to be anywhere else, but there was method in what some perceived as madness. “If this was in Melbourne or another major city, the experience would not be the same,” James said. “This way they are leaving home and their friends and immersing themselves in the study and the music – it’s like band camp times 10.” There was also scope for easily facilitating performance experience for the students in a regional centre and if you have gone out for a coffee or a drink since the academy opened its doors, chances are you walked past or sat listening to a quartet or duo of James Morrison Academy students.

Singing Strong goes online

Continuing the challenge Try this week’s suggestions from the Premier’s Reading Challenge to keep the kids entertained.

May 5 Year 2 FLY Singing Strong, an innovative speech therapy program, introduced to Harbourside Lodge residents last year, by accessing a grant from United Way Glenelg Lewis Court Fund, is continuing thanks to Facebook live streaming and some very passionate staff and carers. Each week, Jess Cook, local singer and song writer streams live from her lounge room into the activities room at Harbourside Lodge. Residents join in, some singing, some playing instruments while others just enjoy the banter Jess has between herself and the residents. Portland District Health certified practising speech pathologist Suzanne Guerin is thrilled the program can continue. “The original purpose of program is to support people living with Parkinson’s Disease, post stroke, mild dementia, COPD or for those people who have issues with voice, speech or breathin,” she said. “This objective is still being met albeit from a safe distance.” Harbourside Lodge Leisure and Lifestyle Co-Ordinator, Cindy Purcell, said the personal connection of the program is not lost through this delivery. “Jess chats to our residents by name as if they are all in the same room - they love it,” she said. One of the benefits of social technology is that it opens the opportunity for others. The virtual program will be shared amongst other aged care facilities across the Glenelg Shire, where access to devices are available and staff have the skills and support to facilitate it. United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Carr said it was great to see social technologies being used in creative ways to provide people in aged care with a sense of connection to the world. “With limited social activities on offer for those living in aged care the risk of social isolation and disengagement is a real concern,” Ms Carr said. Singing Strong is ran weekly with locally known singer Jess Cook and a group of her musical friends on Tuesday from 2-3pm on the Singing Strong Facebook Group. If residents miss out on the live streaming session it is recorded and can be watched at leisure. Anyone wanting further information on the Singing Strong program, please contact Jess Cook through Facebook messenger or Nicole Carr on 0410 513 305.

Jess McGeachin Fly is a beautiful story of determination no matter the odds, and love in the face of loss. Lucy had always been good at fixing things, and Dad needed a bit of help. It was just the two of them after all.So when Lucy finds a bird with a broken wing, she’s sure she can fix him too. But not everything that’s broken can be fixed. Jess McGeachin is a writer/illustrator/designer based in Melbourne. He loves telling stories about hidden worlds just outside our own, and hiding clues in them for small eyes to find. Drawing on a love of natural history (and a day job at Melbourne Museum), Jess hopes that his stories inspire the reader to explore both real and imaginary places and meet the characters that live in them.

1821 – French statesman and military leader Napoleon Bonaparte dies in exile on the island of Saint Helena. 1904 – Pitcher Cy Young, of the Boston Americans, throws the first perfect game in the modern era of baseball against the Philadelphia Athletics. 1941 – The first modern perfume - Chanel No. 5 - was released by iconic fashion designer Coco Chanel (pictured).

Year 3-5 THE BEST GAME EVER Brendan Fevola It’s the biggest game of the season and excitement fills tha air as the Blues and Reds prepare to face off against each other. What bold plays will be made, and who will kick the winning goal. As you read along, learn the basics of AFL football, the positions, the uniforms, how the game is played and the excitement of the match. Fevola played with Carlton and the Brisbane Lions in the AFL and was one of the genuine characters of the game. Playing almost exclusively in the forward line, Fevola won the AFL’s goalkicking twice and was named in the All Australian team on three occasions.

Year 6-9 MIKA & MAX Laura Bloom A story about a girl who meets a boy who changes everything. When 13-yearold Mika is forced to attend a music festival with her family, she resigns herself to hippies, heat, and embarrassment. But nothing could prepare her for Max, who’s almost 10 and has autism. When the two of them join forces, a series of unexpected and life changing events unfolds. Laura Bloom is the author of a number of novels for children and adults, including Augustine’s Lunch, which was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Awards and shortlisted for the Young Australian Readers’ Awards, and In the Mood, which was shortlisted for the ABC Fiction Awards, and was a bestseller in France. Her horse-series for children, Dream Riders, is also being published by Walker Books Australia..

MAKING THE PERFECT GREEN SMOOTHIE First try and use ONLY ingredients you actually enjoy but the best option is three parts vegetable (ie. cucumber, celery, spinach or herbs), two parts liquid (ie. water, yoghurt or milk) and one part fruit (ie. apple, avocado, berries or mango). Add honey, stevia, banana or dates for sweetness and use the likes of chia seeds, nuts or coconut for texture.

Year 9-12 THE SURPRISING POWER OF A GOOD DUMPLING Wai Chim A novel about growing up in a migrant Asian family with a mother who is suffering from a mental illness, from the highly commended author of Freedom Swimmer. Anna Chiu has her hands pretty full looking after her brother and sister and helping out at her dad’s restaurant, all while her mum stays in bed. Dad’s new delivery boy, Rory, is a welcome distraction and even though she knows that things aren’t right at home, she’s starting to feel like she could just be a normal teen. But when Mum finally gets out of bed, things go from bad to worse. And as Mum’s condition worsens, Anna and her family question everything they understand about themselves and each other. A nourishing tale about the crevices of culture, mental wellness and family. Wai Chim is a first-generation Chinese-American from New York City. She grew up speaking Cantonese at home and absorbing Western culture through books, TV and school. She spent some time living in Japan before making Sydney, Australia, her permanent home. In addition to writing, Wai works as a digital producer/ web developer for The Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Anzac Day with a difference It was an ANZAC Day with a difference but it appears the more intimate commemorations struck a chord with neighbours and community groups still dedicated to respectfully marking the occasion. Getting together with neighbours is not unusual for the residents of Mount Gambier’s Park Street – they have an annual Christmas party and are a close knit group. Park Street has been the home of well known Mount Gambier war veteran Charlie Miller for basically seven decades. Charlie has never missed an ANZAC Day commemorations and his neighbours were determined 2020 would not be the first. 2019 Mount Gambier Citizen of the Year Sharon Tuffnell decided it was the perfect time to get the street on board so the 96 year old could still march and be part of a commemoration ceremony and the idea snowballed. Vietnam veteran Graeme Gartside is also a Park Street resident so that gave Charlie a marching companion, with the two former servicemen walking up and down the short, tree lined street prior to the makeshift ceremony. Calamari for Breakfast band member Martin Stephenson provided the PA equipment so everyone in the street could be in their driveway but still hear

the 9am official ceremony, where St John cadets Man O’Connell read the ode and Zeke O’Connell performed The Last Post. Sharon put together the official ceremony thanks to some helpful hints on the RSL website and facebook page and, as they always do, the Park Street residents got on board. Shane Raymond videoed the special occasion, while Celeste Raymond and John Kilsby captured the ANZAC Day with a difference on camera. Charlie shared a few words and a recorded version of the national anthem was also part of the ceremony. “Charlie has been like a grandfather to my kids especially, but to all the kids in this street over the years and it was important to still make the day special for him,” Sharon said. “Graeme also loved being involved and having the opportunity to march with Charlie, an honour he would not normally share, with official SANZAC Day marches seeing veterans march with their wartime colleagues.” The Park Street commemorations were posted on facebook and the response was overwhelming regarding the touching tribute. Another well known Mount Gambier veteran Jack Hopgood also had his neighbours rally around him to provide an ANZAC Day ceremony.

Photographer Frank Monger was inspired to set up a Ferrers Street ceremony for Jack when James Morrison started promoting the driveway ceremonies, complete with candles and someone playing The Last Post – in this instance it was Frank’s daughter Faith. Veteran Barry Ward also took part in the ANZAC commemorations with his bagpipes. “Faith downloaded the music and was very happy to play her saxophone from our driveway,” Frank said. “We contacted the neighbours and several stood in their driveways at 6am.” And the neighbours clearly appreciated the new look commemoiation with Faith receiving a number of thank you cards and letters in the wake of the April 25 event. For Frank, who usually attends Mount Gambier’s major memorial services and the march to capture the day for local media outlets, it was a more low key but just as special occasion. – his involvement with the AIPP Reflections Project in 2015/16 (a project profiling surviving WW2 veterans) has heightened how he feels about Australia’s military history. “Working on that project certainly made me far more aware of the significance and meaning of the medals they wear,” Frank said “Previously I’d seen the medals but didn’t understand what a Pacific service medal was or what a DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross) meant – it gives you a whole new perspective and understanding.” It was a new experience for Faith as well, given, until 2020, The Last Post, was the exclusive domain of buglers. “At first I thought it may have been disrespectful to play on a different instrument but, after seeing the push for all musicians to join in a play at dawn, I felt it would be a nice gesture, even if it was only for my street,” she said. “While I do not have any close relations to service veterans, I still felt immensely proud to be able to play the Last Post. The call is symbolic to our remembrance of those who have served and those currently serving and I feel honoured to have had the opportunity to play it.” Faith also found the war veteran project that her father worked on gave her a deeper understanding of war and how it weaves into the history of Australia. “I viewed the portraits on display at the Riddoch Art Gallery while they were being exhibited and the stories these pictures told gave me and I’m sure many other people who also had the pleasure of viewing these, the opportunity to take a step into some of these veterans’ lives and understand more of the things they went through to serve our country.” Senior RSL officials, local government representatives and school groups also all still found a way to honour the fallen. McDonald Park School students laid wreaths at the Vansittart Park Memorial and also visited the Lone Pine.

Park Street was the picturesque setting for an ANZAC Day march and ceremony for residents and veterans Grame Gartside (walking) & Charlie Miller (gopher).

The Fringe ďŹ ghtsback Fringe shows are heading online so those that had been looking forward to the weird and wonderful world of entertainment this eclectic festival throws up can still see the acts they had their eyes on. Three performances that were set to be part of the Fringe Mount Gambier have signed up for FringeView - the online option - so head to the Fringe website and book your ticket to view these acclaimed performances, supporting the local arts scene. Badass (Tash York) With her wine-loving antics and witty repartee, Tash York is a singer, improviser, cabaret performer, MC and‌.. balloon twister! Known for her ballsy voice, dynamic energy and an uncanny ability to rap on command, Tash is a phenomenal performer, charismatic and courageous. Tash has performed cabaret and musicalimprov to sold-out audiences at Perth Fringe World, Adelaide Fringe, Edinburgh Fringe, Melbourne Cabaret Festival, Ballarat Cabaret Festival, Brisbane Wonderland Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival. If you've ever had a panic attack while having sex, been overly emotional in a children's film or just think way too much about stationery then perhaps like Tash York you haven’t found your inner badass. With 1 in 5 Australians suffering from some sort of mental illness, York wanted to write a show that not only normalised what people deal with on a daily basis also put on a kick-ass comedy cabaret show. Growing up as a bit of a tomboy, York always strived to be a badass. Like her previous work Badass follows Yorks signature style including parodied pop songs, raps, hilarious true stories, improvised numbers and a whole lot of heart. Known for her ballsy voice, dynamic energy and an uncanny ability to rap on command, York will be sure to provide an evening of matchless comedycabaret in her latest solo show Badass. With her matchless brand of comedy-cabaret, Tash York is full of exuberance, outrageous behaviour and probably a glass (or 10) of wine to boot! Cabin Fever (Dianne Reid) Cabin Fever, presented by Dianne Reid, is an intimate interactive physical theatre work that utilises set, prop, sound and video projection to create for an undeniably odd but unforgettable show, exploring ritual, intimacy, loneliness and death. Reid as a performer is very talented, particularly in the area of putting her audience at ease with her and making them feel comfortable. Cabin Fever is a true-blue Fringe event; a weird, wacky and wonderful 30 minute work that will stay with you after you leave the caravan. Dianne is a performer, choreographer, camera operator, video editor and educator. She works in both live and screen contexts. She completed a Master of Arts in Dance on Screen in 2001 and her dance video works have screened at dance and short film festivals in Melbourne and internationally at IMZ Monaco, Videodance, Greece and ADF Dancing for the camera, USA (now International Screendance Festival). Dianne was Artistic Director of Dancehouse (2004-2006) before travelling to India as an Asialink performing arts resident (2006/07) Dianne was a lecturer in contemporary dance and dance video at Deakin University from 1996–2010. She was awarded a PhD in 2016 from Deakin with her project "Dance Interrogations—the body as creative interface in 'Live Screen/Dance'" Orpheus (Alex Flanagan-Wright & Phil Grainger) The story of Orpheus, updated to a 21st century Northern English social context, has Dave living his life in adult greyness until Eurydice comes through the door of his local karaoke bar. The spoken text is rapid, vigorous and dynamic – reminiscent of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood in its multi-layered breadth of references, as metaphors pile atop each other and word pictures crackle into life for a second, only to be replaced with another picture, or with an authoritative silence. All the tell-tale tools of the storyteller are on display here, and they compel us to enter the story and empathise with Dave, his diffidence, his unfulfilled dreams and his epic journey to reclaim love. Guaranteed to make you laugh and cry.

LOCAL The best in the State SPORT Mil Lel Cricket Club hands out awards Mil Lel Cricket Club has handed out its season 2019/20 awards with the junior players enjoying a presentation evening on March 13 and the senior presentation run over viceo conferencing on April 18. The club committee was proud of what the club was able to achieve over the 2019/20 season, with success on and off the field. Mile Lel was runner-up in the Sims Shield (Under 12) competition with many players being nominated for, and winning awards in the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association Junior Awards. In the senior grades, Mil Lel had players invited to attend the league awards night as a result of being in the top 5 vote getters in the association for batting, bowling or fielding and the club showed promising signs, particularly in the matches prior to the Christmas break. While the Barber Shiled (A Grade) team missed the finals, the team fielded a young and talented playing group, and debuted a number of future stars of the club, including Darcy Williamson, Tom Smith and Mitch Little, who all took their chances and contributed to the team’s success. The Mil Lel Barber Shield team has a promising future for the next seasons with the young team gaining experience in 2019/20. The B grade team were also unlucky missing finals by one game, showing the club has depth in its stocks for next season. Off the field, the club was grateful to be able secure some major sponsors including Bendigo Community Bank, Infrabuild Steel Center, Watersolve Irrigation, Miller Whan and John, Caroline Hills Wines, Solomons Flooring and G Weyers Painting Services, with Shes Apples Market, OK Pie Shop, Jims Cleaning, The Athletes Foot, UFS Chemist and the Australian Fish Market sponsoring the junior teams. The club was also thrilled to have the first all-female team in the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association. The Mil Lel Cricket Club will be nominating teams in all grades for the 2020/21 season and invite anyone wanting to play cricket to enquire to millelcc@gmail.com or call David Williamson on 0417 876 788 or Craig Little on 0407 232 018.

Cricket is alive and well in the Limestone Coast with the Lower South East boys team taking out the division two SAPSASA title recently, defeating neighbour team, the Mid South East, to claim the title. Heath mcShane coached the talented line-up, which recovered after an opening round loss to Barossa and Light before securing consecutive wins against Southern Fleurieu and Gawler to make it into the grand final play off against the Mid South East team. The final was an extremely close and intense game all day but in the end the Lower South East boys captained by Robbie and Jaco came out on top. The victory has now given next year’s boys the opportunity to play in the Division 1 competition.

LOCAL SPORT Change of role brings success She was part of the inaugural South East Female Football program and last week Sarah Allan was selected in the AFLW All Australian team – just reward for an athlete, who while pursuing other sports, was always committed to Aussie Rules football, well before the pathways existed. Now 22 years old, Sarah received the call from Adelaide Crows AFLW coach Matthew Clarke alerting her to her All Australian nod. “He was really excited and had a big grin on his face,” Sarah said. “He basically said it was just reward for the hard work I have done.” Selected as a key defender, it is not without a sense of irony that Sarah was named in the last line of defence, a position she has only recently adapted to, for the first time in her career. “My first season in AFLW I was in and out of the team and I didn’t really have a position, I was playing a bit everywhere,” she said. “In seasons two I was put in defence and I had never played there before and I just took it as a challenge and was just happy to be on the field every week and

“…without Chelsea (Randall) there, I had to really step up…” I developed from there.” Recognition for Sarah came quickly in the recently cut short season and she believes it could well have been the absence of star defender Chelsea Randall, who was recovering from a serious knee injury, that has seen her elevation as a player in the AFLW competition. “Without Chelsea there, I had to really step up and while we still worked really well as a defensive unit, I felt like I got to more contests, created more contests and had more of an influence on the game,” Sarah said. “It really gave me a chance to step up and be a leader. I also think as a defender you have to be reliable for a long time before you get recognised.” And, while the All Australian selection was a huge thrill for Sarah, a career highlight came earlier in the season when she was player voted into the Adelaide Crows leadership group. “Leadership is certainly an area of my game I have tried to develop and it was pretty special to be voted into the leadership group this year and I want to continue building on that,” she said.

“…he (Matthew Clarke) basically said it was just reward for the hard work I have done…

“That is an aspect you can work on, on and off the field.” Building a better fitness base is also on Sarah’s hit list during the off season. “I have always had pretty good skills but I do need to work on building that fitness so I can play up the ground and influence more contests,” she said. The uncertainly surrounding an SANFL season will see Sarah potentially training a lot on her own and focussing on that fitness work. “Mind you we have always been expected to train during our off season,” Sarah said. “We are not full time professionals but we basically get two or three weeks off after the season to recover and then we are back into it, training ourselves and playing in other competitions.” And Sarah has no excuse not to be training hard, with her role at the Adelaide Crows currently suspended. After competing a Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Activity at the end of 2018, Sarah secured employment at the club in a development role, running school clinics, carnivals and promoting football. Sarah, and her sister Jess, who is part of the Greater Western Sydney Giants AFLW program, after moving as part of her role in the army, were both recently part of the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League’s online awards presentation, with both thrilled to see just how the competition has progressed. “The commitment shown by the players demonstrates a need for this competition in the South East,” Sarah said as part of her video message to the current LCWFL players. “I can’t wait for the competition to get bigger and better in the years to come – awesome work.” And she has committed to always support the league, basically started by her father Keith, that gave her a start. “I am so excited to see how many girls and women are interested in playing football,” she said. “I grew up playing when there were hardly any girls interested and we had to play with the boys or travel to Adelaide to even train, let alone play.” Sarah was part of a group of barely half a dozen at times that would brave cold winter’s nights in the South East running through some skills and doing all this when the best they could hope for was a spot in the State team for a brief carnival during the year at best. “I am really excited the opportunities are now there in the South East and fully support the competition and am happy to help out with whatever they need to keep it going,” Sarah said. “As the AFLW gets bigger and better so will competitions like the South East competition, especially with the time and effort that’s been put in.”
