Cover - Award winning business celebrates 10th anniversary This month, local family-owned business, Mates Rates Mount Gambier is proud to celebrate 10 successful years in business. “I would like to say a massive thank you to our many customers over the years and also to the many staff and subcontractors who have helped build the business to where it is today including our current team, Rick Jones, Brad Hepburn, Steve Pochec and Lyn Masters,” Owner Manager Adam Fosdike said. “To be successful in small business you need to be prepared to make mistakes and learn from them. You need to be open to change and constantly look for better ways of doing things or you’ll be left behind. If you want to know how to succeed in your business, simply listen to your customers. It’s definitely not easy and it’s still a lot of hard work, especially in times like we are all currently experiencing with the pandemic, so we should all stick together and support local businesses as well as each other through these tough times”. It’s all about quality and value for money at Mates Rates with its vision statement as true today as it was when Adam opened the doors in April 2010; “Market leaders in price and quality”. It sees Adam constantly searching the marketplace across Australia for the best quality products at the best prices. “If we can’t find suppliers that can deliver this to our customers, we simply don’t sell it,” he said. “We want our customers to
know that they are getting best price, best quality every time they shop with us.” Originally Mates Rates came into the market supplying construction equipment for hire in 2010 and
expanded the business to offer supplying and building sheds in early 2011. Their sheds are all made from 100% Australian Blue Scope Steel and include site-specific engineering

Best of S D N FRIE The time honoured expression ‘mother knows best’ so often rings true but in the case of Mary Gill, it was her brother that was on the money, handpicking his younger sister’s beau and eight decades later, it is a love story that has endured the test of time. “My brother brought him (Edward Neale) home,” Mary said. “He thought he was a good sort for me.” That could well be the understatement of the year, with Mary Gill and Edward Neale forming a lifelong bond that has lasted from their teenage years to their 70th wedding anniversary celebrated on April 8, this year, and shows no signs of diminishing.
They finish each other’s sentences, correct each other when details of faded memories cannot be easily recalled and laugh – at each other and with each other – a lot. Mary grew up in Casterton and Edward, who was a Mount Gambier boy, had picked up a job at the Casterton mill, living on site, and , as it turned out, fostering a relationship that would shape his entire life with, the then 15 year old Mary. One of their first outings was as memorable as they come. “We went on a bus to the Edenhope dance and got home very late,” Mary said. “While we were gone the Casterton river flooded and by the time we got back to where the truck was parked, the bus had to pull right up to the truck so we could climb from the bus to the truck. The water had come up so quickly. It wasn’t there when we left for the dance.” And while that may have been a dramatic start to their romance, for the most part, it has been smooth sailing, as Mary, who was part of a 30 girl team of girls working in the Myer factory making gloves, and Edward grew closer and the inevitable marriage proposal came. “I did ask her dad’s permission first,” Edward said. But other than that, neither are clear on the details, given it was an era when grand gesture proposals were not in vogue. “I know I wasn’t surprised and we definitely picked out the ring together,” Mary said. Weddings were also not the full blown productions they can so often be today, with 30 people, basically just family, attending the ceremony at the Sacred Heart
“…there is no doubt they have kept us young…” Mary Neale Catholic Church on top of Toorak Hill. Heenan’s Café then hosted the reception, which was a sit down meal, with the traditional three tiered wedding cake, fruit cake, of course, the centre piece. “My mother made the cake,” Mary said. It was a more practical time, with Mary’s sole bridesmaid, Pat O’Brien, selecting her own dress for the occasion. “I remember it was blue,” Mary said. “She picked it out so she could make sure it was something she could get wear out of afterwards.” The newlyweds then moved to Mount Gambier, with Edward driving log trucks and working as a builder, while Mary worked at Katchor’s Fashion. “We lived for a few months at his father’s house,” Mary said. Then they moved to 19 Coolabah Street, where they built a shed. “We were still living in the shed when we had our first child,” Mary said. The couple built their first home together, with Mary on the tools almost as much as Edward. “We basically worked on the house when we weren’t at our ‘real’ jobs,” Mary said. “So it did take a while.” But it was a labour of love and it was the family home until 1975 when they moved to their current location at Worrolong. Family holidays loom large in the memory bank of all the family, including daughters Cheryl Cranwell, Pauline Nulty and Judy Cameron, with Lake George and a shack at Pelican Point providing the backdrop for most of those treasured camping trips. And it is family that is all consuming for Mary and Edwards in their twilight years with nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and a great great grandchild to keep them well and truly on their toes. “We always look forward to seeing them,” Mary said. “There is no doubt they have kept us young.” Left (top) - Mary & Edward Neale celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on April 8 this year. With Queen’s We Are The Champions and the Bee Gees classic Stayin’ Alive as part of the soundtrack to their charity walk, former Mount Gambier resident Abby Beames and her fiancé Kynan Mann worked off their Easter chocolate by completing a 26km journey to raise money to provide educational opportunities for refugees. The Walk My Way campaign is organised through the Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) and is not Abby’s first foray into what has become a passion for helping others. In 2015 she spent six eye-opening months in Mexico, initially for her volunteer training and then as part of a Mexican mission team and Abby saw a life that was so far removed from her own that she couldn’t have ever imagined it. She lived in communities where drug dealing and prostitution were the norm and children were shunted from house to house among family members. Homelessness was also rife and Abby worked across a number of programs and projects in all those environments. Abby and her fellow volunteers spent weekends building houses, they worked in homeless shelters and the kids programs were a key focus. “Working in that environment certainly changed me from thinking about what job I wanted, how much money I could earn or what course I wanted to do at university,” Abby said. “I just knew helping people like this was what I wanted to do – it was all about what
was happening right in front of my eyes. You really get to know the people and all of sudden it’s not about you or your life.”
“…I felt compelled to support in any way possible…” Now a graduate teacher, after four years at Tabor College, in Adelaide, Abby’s passion for education merged with that desire to help and she finally decided to sign up to the Walk My Way project, despite having spent previous years thinking it was a “crazy idea”. “After a friend visited Kakuma Refugee Camp last year through Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) and shared with me about the educational needs in refugee camps, I felt compelled to support in any way possible,” Abby said. “I got into the education field because I believe that everyone has the right to be educated and be blessed by the opportunities that come from it. By beginning to teach my own class this year, I feel as though I have become even more passionate about the education of others and so, I signed myself and fiancé up online.”
“…I got into the education field because I believe that everyone has the right to be educated…”
After completing her studies, Abby secured a Year1/2 gig at Good Shepherd Lutheran School, in Angaston, making her home in nearby Nuriootpa, but being able to do something practical to help even more children enjoy an education became the motivation she needed for the charity walk. With a target of $1000, the Barossa Valley based team had only attracted $100 the night before they took off on April 13, but donations have now started to pour in and they are currently sitting at $1700 and counting. “I am incredibly grateful that so many of our families and friends donated because this was incredibly motivational,” Abby said. “People were donating throughout the walk and even afterwards – I think some people may be impressed and surprised that we actually made it the whole way.” And they would be even more impressed if they knew the couple did zero preparation. “I don’t know how we survived,” Abby said. “I googled ‘long distance walking tips,’ we stocked up on water and bandaids, I found my portable speaker and a and off we went.” The bottom line is the duo completed the route that saw them head from Nuriootpa to Angaston to Tanunda and then back to Nuriootpa and with only $26 providing a teacher, textbook and table for one pre-school child in a refugee camp, their current tally will help educate more than 60 East African children. “Many of these kids were born in camps and know no other life,” Abby said. “Some even arrived alone, without a mum or dad. We want to help in a practical way that changes lives and know we can do just that. Each $26 you raise can help a refugee child go to school for a whole year.” If you would like to donate to Abby and Kynan head to https://barossa. walkmyway.org.au/page/TeamKybby and follow the links. The Stand Like Stone Foundation is set to support animal welfare and athletic development in the Limestone Coast thanks to the establishment of two new sub funds. As one of the leading community foundations in South Australia, and the only community foundation in the Limestone Coast, Stand Like Stone has supported the region through its charitable grant making and educational scholarships since 2004, delivering more than $1.75 million in direct benefits to date. Stand Like Stone CEO Anne Kerr said the two new sub funds represent a first for the foundation as well as exciting ways to give to the region. “The Caroline Barr Animal Rescue Sub Fund is the first sub fund in Stand Like Stone whose focus will be on providing grants to support animal welfare across the region, which we are really excited about,” she
said “The Barrie Holmes Memorial Scholarship has been established in memory of the late Barrie Holmes (pictured below), and again is a first for Stand Like Stone as it will provide educational scholarships for students in relation to sports and athletic development”. Both sub funds were hoping to raise funds through Swinging with the Stars, and although the event has been cancelled for 2020, it is not stopping Caroline Barr or Stephen Holmes continue with their fundraising. Caroline (pictured above right), who is passionate about giving back to the community, has noticed the huge need for local animal welfare and rescue support. “Organisations such as Wet Noses Animal Rescue are run purely by volunteers, and funding relies heavily on sponsors within the community,” Caroline said. “By establishing a sub fund within Stand Like Stone, I can create a legacy and ensure ongoing future support for a variety of charitable organisations and a cause that I am passionate about.” For Stephen Holmes (pictured above left) and his siblings, establishing the Barrie Holmes Memorial Scholarship represented a unique way to honour their late father. “My dad, Barrie Holmes, was a very active member of the community, supporting children to participate in sport,” Stephen said. “His passion for helping those in our local community is something that my siblings and I have carried with us throughout our whole lives, we want to honour who he was and the way he raised us.” Stand Like Stone chair Bill DeGaris, welcomed the establishment of the new sub funds,
“The board was delighted to establish the new sub funds and really want to commend and congratulate Caroline Barr and the Holmes family for their passion and dedication to this region,” Mr DeGaris said. “Establishing a sub fund within the Stand Like Stone Foundation really is a great way to give back to your local community.” Through its existing sub funds and donations, the team at Stand Like Stone has been busy this year helping the Limestone Coast. As well as working with the Keilira community to provide help following the devastating bushfire, they are currently holding an additional charitable grant and educational scholarship round, and the annual OneFortyOne Community Capacity Building grants. The team is now working hard to identify ways to further help the community. “We know that a sub fund with Stand Like Stone is a great way to get involved and make a real difference to your local community,” Mr DeGaris said. “It helps people make an immediate impact in the areas they care about.” Grants and scholarship opportunities from the new sub funds will be advertised in line with other Stand Like Stone Grant and Scholarship rounds in due course. Donations to Stand Like Stone are never spent, remaining in perpetuity for the benefit of the Limestone Coast earning interest, which is then spent through charitable grants and educational scholarships.
“Sometimes you just have to push through the ‘what ifs’ and take a chance on yourself.” That is a mantra that has served Mount Gambier based artist Trudi Timmermann well as she has followed both her passions and instincts to carve a niche for herself on the artistic landscape. Trudi has called Mount Gambier home for more than two decades and she appears to have achieved that elusive balance, where her passions and career have intersected and merged to almost become one. From her work on canvas to her wearable art, Trudi should just be coming off the high of holding a mini-exhibition at Mount Gambier’s Riddoch Art Gallery, as part of the Fringe Mount Gambier, during the month of March, but while that was cut short, there are plenty of ways, including Instagram, for people to become acquainted with her stunning work. “I loved art as a child and have always had a natural ability to draw,” Trudi said. But what has also been the hallmark od Trudi’s life is doing things her own way and that has been especially evident in the building of her art career. “I have always liked to do things differently and I guess I like the idea of “why just have art on your walls” when you can wear it anywhere,” she said. And that saw Trudi, who still produces the more traditional forms of art, branch out into basically an entire line of merchandising which shares her work with the world in wearable form. “I heard about a website called Redbubble, where you can create a shop online and sell your original designs worldwide,” she said.
“I started a shop and would create and upload my artwork on any products I chose to sell, and from there my art journey began. I guess for me confidence has come with age and I liked what I was creating and selling.” It has seen Trudi reproduce her vibrant designs on homewares and clothing and it has been a decision
from which she has never looked back, with her work reflective of her other passions – the coast and horses. “I have a horse which I spend plenty of time with, I also surf, stand up paddleboard and snorkel and I love taking photos and filming under water for fun,” Trudi said. And there is no doubt those interests feature strongly in her work, whether it be a canvas for the wall or a stylish clutch for the next time you hit the town. “A few of my favourite artworks I have done are of horses, fish, surfboards, even a few mermaids,” Trudi said. “I like to draw or paint what I am passionate about as I believe it shines through into one’s
work. Although I use a range of bright bold colours I do love the shades of greens and blues of the ocean so most definitely my love of the sea has absolutely found its way into my work.” And she is also keen to be able to use her work for the greater good. “I would like to use my artwork one day towards helping save our marine life and oceans.” By her own admission, Trudi is a loner when it comes to her art but that is not to say her work and career has not been influenced by some interesting mentors.“I think artists with their own different unique styles are inspiration for me,” Trudi said. “I was fortunate enough to do a drawing class with George Gittoes,
he makes a difference in this world with his war art and will travel to some very unsafe places overseas for his paintings, taking serious risks. Another inspirational artist’s work I favour is M.C Escher, a mathematical surrealist. Fantasy art has always been a favourite of mine too.” To see more of Trudi’s work head to her facebook page. “…the city wasn’t a place for me and I want to settle down…”
Turning the page on a new chapter Mount Gambier dancer Sam Malseed was always a star on the local scene and his performances at the annual National Showcase in Queensland, as part of the MJ Dance Studio contingent, certainly suggested he stacked up against the best dancers on Australia. Then came the Channel 10 reality television dance competition So You Think You Can Dance in 2014 (pictured
“…I just rode it and enjoyed the time as I knew it was a fun time but it wouldn’t last…”
“…a lot of auditions go into getting those jobs and years of training…” bottom right) and it turned out Australia loved the, then 18 year old, as much as we did. He survived the cut throat competition, that is based around the public vote, until the final
hurdle – making the top three and being eliminated just before the grand final, which was won by Michael Dameski. Exposure on the national media landscape and making contacts with some of the big names in the Aussie dance industry certainly kickstarted Sam’s dance career, which saw him relocate to Sydney, signing with top Australian agency Grayboy Entertainment. “I travelled around Australia teaching various workshops, mostly acrobatics and contemporary,” Sam said. He was working alongside fellow 2014 So You Think alumni Renelle, Jay and Joel and also snuck off for a stint in the United States, which was part of his Dancer of the Year win at the 2014 National Showcase. And whatever you think of reality talent shows and their graduates, you can be rest assured Sam wouldn’t change a thing about having the So You Think experience. “Of course it was amazing and it helped my career,” Sam said. “It got my name out there and helped me get a start in my career.” A career that has had many twists and turns as Sam dabbled in a variety of genres for a variety of employers. He did three seasons with the Australian Opera, working as a dancer and acrobat on the company’s productions of Turandot, a Puccini opera featuring arguably the one operatic aria most people know, Nessun dorma, as well as Bizet’s Carmen and the satirical Prokofiev opera The Love for Three Oranges.
Sam then went down the path traversed by so many fellow MJ Dance graduates – the cruise ship scene. He worked with three cruise ships over the journey – Oceania, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, which is where he was part of the We Will Rock You musical cast. Of course, it takes a lot of hard work to secure any of these contacts in what is a transient and at times, fickle, industry. “A lot of auditions go into getting those jobs and years of training,” Sam said. “I found that the jobs I landed the most of were the ones where they were looking for technically sound dancers and Opera Australia and cruise ships definitely love that. There was a lot of professionalism. Each person is there to do a job and because you’ve beaten thousands of people all around the world to get that job you know you have to work hard to keep it.” Sam loved the challenges of developing his craft and being part of stunning productions but also the personal side of being part of a close knit group of dancers. “The people become your family - each time you have a new cast on a cruise ship you’re stuck onboard with them for up to a year at a time,” he said. Being thousands of kilometres away from your own family and friends, also adds to the importance of creating bonds with your colleagues as you learn to live independently. “I just kind of ran by the seat of my pants most of the time and tried to take everything in as I could,” Sam said. “I mean it was a bit crazy going from some kid from the Mount to Sydney where everyone in the industry knows my name, so I just rode it and enjoyed the time as I knew it was a fun time but it wouldn’t last. I always wanted to come home at some point so by looking at that I just enjoyed every opportunity I was given.” Safe to say, Sam finished this chapter of his life on a high, working
in the United Kingdom with the Welsh National Opera as understudy to the lead male dancer in Carmen, a production he knew well from his time at Opera Australia, and then Firedance – a Latin fusion with commercial pieces that toured the UK prior to Sam returning to Mount Gambier. “That (Firedance) has definitely been my most memorable and enjoyable experience,” Sam said. “There were such amazing dancers there. The main duet were both Strictly Come Dancing professionals, Karen Hauer and Gorka Marquez, and the way we all danced on stage, it really was like fire on the stage.” For Sam, it was a bit of a pinch yourself moment, given he basically joined the MJ Dance family after walking into one of his older sister Kristi’s rehearsals and there was 30 girls and one guy. “I thought that was a pretty good ratio,” Sam said. He soon developed a passion for the discipline though and has always maintained a deep sense of gratitude to MJ director Maria Slape. “She shaped me into the well rounded technical dancer that I am today and gave me really amazing foundations that I could grow from and do anything that I wanted,” Sam said. But for now, dance is set to take a back seat as Sam looks for a more settled, stable future, working alongside his parents Jason and Bronwyn Malseed at the family’s 30 year old real estate business. “I was always going to move back,” Sam said. “The city wasn’t a place for me and I want to settle down, get a farm and a girlfriend, maybe a dog. It’s just the life I would like to lead from now on. Dancing is an amazing career but you can’t do it forever. You are always chasing the next job and it gets tiring and it’s hard to set yourself up properly for a family and house, even when you’re constantly working, you don’t always know when your next pay cheque will come or even at all.”
“…gave me really amazing foundations that I could grow from and do anything that I wanted…”

Roses can be successfully grown in every Australian state and territory. Here’s how to get them to survive and thrive in your garden.
Growing roses in Australia relies on three main factors - protection from the wind, receiving at least four hours of sun per day, and have moist soil rich in organic matter (compost is best).
THE BEST PLACE TO PLANT ROSES Roses are tough, but they do need sunshine and the more the better. In open, sunny gardens roses will grow happy, healthy and relatively diseasefree. In full shade they will struggle to grow and never reach their full potential. Four hours full sunshine each day is enough. In exposed, windy conditions roses need protection; use a windbreak such as a solid fence or hedge. IDEAL SOIL CONDITIONS FOR ROSES Roses are long-lived, so long as they have soil deep enough for the roots to hold the plant firmly in place. The ideal soil for roses is rich in organic matter; compost is best, and decayed cow manure is also very good. CAN YOU GROW ROSES IN CLAY SOIL? Roses grow well in clay because clay retains moisture and nutrients, but they will also grow in most other soils, especially when organic matter
is added. If your soil is heavy clay you will need to break it up with a mattock then add organic matter and gypsum, to help break it down into a more friable loam. WHAT ARE BARE-ROOTED ROSES? Packaged roses are bare-rooted and should be planted straight away, to prevent them from drying out. If you cannot plant them properly immediately, place them in a large hole then cover with soil and water daily, until ready to fully prepare and plant. HOW TO PLANT ROSES: STEP BY STEP • Dig a planting hole at least 50cm wide and 50cm deep; wide enough for the roots to spread, and deep enough
for stability. • Fill the hole with water (this saturates the soil before planting), then allow to drain. • Mound the soil in the base of the hole and spread the roots over the mound. Make sure the graft union (this looks like a knot on the lower stem) will sit 4cm above ground-level once planted. • Fill with soil from the hole that has been improved (see Step 2). Leave a shallow depression so water will drain into the newly planted rose. • Firm the soil, then water again with a solution of seaweed nutrient. (Do not use fertiliser at planting time, as this will burn the new roots and result in die-back). • Water each day as new growth appears; don’t allow your rose to dry out until it is established (this can take 10-12 weeks). HOW TO GROW ROSES IN POTS If you buy a rose plant in a pot, it is
perfectly ok to allow it to grow in the nursery pot for a season. Treloar Roses suggest that in order to prevent the plant from becoming root bound however, re-potting the plant the following winter is essential. You can also plant bare-rooted roses in pots. Look for miniature varieties that are better suited to confined spaces. When selecting a pot for roses, it is generally better to select a pot that is too large, than a pot that is too small. This is because roses have large, vigorous root systems. A well-draining pot will prevent the occurrence of root rot. Once you’ve selected an appropriate pot, fill it with potting mix and dig a hole large enough to accommodate the plant. When replanting a potted rose, be sure not to disturb the root system. This means you will need to gently slide the plant out of the nursery pot. Do not shake off excess soil. Gently place the plant into the pre-prepared hole, cover with soil and water well. Keep the plant well-hydrated while its root system adjusts to the new environment. Keep a lookout for wilting leaves, however, as this could
signal your rose is getting a little too much water. HOW TO PRUNE ROSES Most roses need winter pruning, which involves removing 60 per cent of their growth, including the oldest and weakest wood. Prune each rose bush so that the centre of the plant is open, allowing sunshine and good air circulation to all the stems. HOW TO PRUNE CLIMBING ROSES Climbing roses need their dead and diseased stems removed. Reduce the side shoots to short stubs, no longer than 10cm. Main stems should not be pruned. For climbing roses, training rather than pruning is the main concern. On walls and fences, new growth can be easily bent and tied into position; main shoots should be trained to grow as close to horizontal as possible. On pillars and arches, climbing roses should be trained in a spiral. This training will result in maximum flowering side shoots for optimum flower display.

New releases from two of the best
THE DICKENS BOY Thomas Kenneally In the late 1800s, rather than run the risk of his under-achieving sons tarnishing his reputation at home, Charles Dickens sent two of them to Australia. The tenth child of Charles Dickens, Edward Bulwer Lytton Dickens, known as Plorn, had
consistently proved unable ‘to apply himself ’ to school or life. So aged sixteen, he is sent, as his brother Alfred was before him, to Australia. Plorn arrives in Melbourne in late 1868 carrying a terrible secret. He has never read a word of his father’s work. He is sent out to a 2000-square-mile station in remotest New South Wales to learn to become a man, and a gentleman stockman, from the most diverse and toughest of companions. In the outback he becomes enmeshed with Paakantji, colonists, colonialborn, ex-convicts, ex-soldiers, and very few women. Plorn, unexpectedly, encounters the same veneration of his father and familiarity with Dickens’ work in Australia as was rampant in England. Against this backdrop, and featuring cricket tournaments, horse-racing, bushrangers, sheep droving, shifty stock and station agents, frontier wars and first encounters with Australian women, Plorn meets extraordinary people and enjoys wonderful adventures as he works to prove himself. This is Thomas Keneally in his most familiar terrain. Taking historical figures and
events and reimagining them with verve, compassion and humour. It is a triumph. Thomas Keneally was born in 1935 and his first novel was published in 1964. Since then he has written a considerable number of novels and non-fiction works. His novels include The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, Schindler’s List and The People’s Train. He has won the Miles Franklin Award, the Booker Prize, the Los Angeles Times Prize, the Mondello International Prize and has been made a Literary Lion of the New York Public Library, a Fellow of the American Academy, recipient of the University of California gold medal, and is now the subject of a 55 cent Australian stamp. He has held various academic posts in the United States, but lives in Sydney. THE KENNEDY CURSE James Patterson & Cynthia Fagen Kennedys were always taught to win at all costs. And they did – but the costs were unimaginable... Across decades and generations, the Kennedys have been a family of charismatic adventurers, raised to take risks and
excel. Their name is synonymous with American royalty. Their commitment to public service is legendary. But, for all the successes, the family has been blighted by assassinations, fatal accidents, drug and alcohol abuse and sex scandals. To this day, the Kennedys occupy a unique, contradictory place in the world’s imagination: at once familiar and unknowable; charmed and cursed. The Kennedy Curse is a revealing, fascinating account of America’s most famous family, as told by the world’s most trusted storyteller. Jmes Patterson is one of the best-known and biggest-selling writers of all time. His books have sold in excess of 385 million copies worldwide. He is the author of some of the most popular series of the past two decades – the Alex Cross, Women’s Murder Club, Detective Michael Bennett and Private novels – and he has written many other number one bestsellers including romance novels and stand-alone thrillers. James is passionate about encouraging children to read. Inspired by his own son who was a reluctant reader,
he also writes a range of books for young readers including the Middle School, I Funny, Treasure Hunters, Dog Diaries and Max Einstein series. James has donated millions in grants to independent bookshops and has been the most borrowed author of adult fiction in UK libraries for the past eleven years in a row. He lives in Florida with his wife and son.

Nursing centre cleans up with grant windfall Dartmoor Bush Nursing Centre has received much needed funds to replace a dishwasher to support their social support group weekly lunches. Local community members volunteer regularly to cook lunch for the centre’s older clients and having a new, reliable dishwasher helps make the job of cleaning up much easier while assisting with the required food standards. The dishwasher being replaced was originally donated from funds provided by United Way Glenelg 10 years ago. Community service coordinator Rachel Pridham said many of the clients live rural and remotely and use their weekly visit to the centre to engage in activities and fellowship. “For some members of the group, this is their only social outing for the week,” she said. Fourteen volunteers and 18 members attending the Dartmoor Bush Nursing Centre will directly benefit from the new dishwasher with hopes of the program branching out into the wider community in the future. The social support group is currently on pause but will resume once advice has been provided that it is safe to do so. Meanwhile staff are doing a weekly meal drop off with an activity pack to help relieve the boredom, for the clients who want it. “At this stage we have 13 clients receiving this service,”
Millicent Library expanding services for community
Ms Pridham said. “We are using this drop off to engage with our clients and have a check in on their wellbeing.” The purpose of the United Way Glenelg Lewis Court grant is to support community based recreational, social, and physical activities that contribute to good health and alleviate social isolation of our older community members. To assist potential applicants and for those seeking information on our Community Fund and Lewis Court Fund grants. please go to our website unitedwayglenelg. com.au or contact our Nicole Carr, Executive Officer for a one-on-one session on 0410 513 305. Although the physical spaces of the Millicent Library and Gallery are closed to the public, they are very much open, providing a range of innovative services to our community. The ‘Call, Click and Collect’ service that has been implemented has enabled library staff to continue to engage with their patrons and maintain the provision of a library service. Council’s manager libraries & cultural services Janice Nitschke has received positive feedback on the initiative. “Averaging 50-60 patrons a day the service has been highly successful,” she said. “Our patrons very much appreciate this opportunity to continue to access the resources our library has to offer. We continue to refresh our physical collections with new items added weekly and our patrons are still able to borrow that book or DVD that they have heard about. Technology is key to staying connected and all patrons on our database have been contacted, whether it be by SMS, email or telephone, about our new services. Interestingly we received an email back from overseas, some backpackers who joined the library when living in Millicent and they thanked us for the great services. Libraries indeed are community hubs for everyone. In addition, access to our online library services and digital content through eLibrary has grown by 50% and additional funding will grow the collection. We also will deliver a suite of children’s services virtually through social media: Bounce and Rhyme is being broadcast twice weekly with great viewer numbers, storytelling and activities have been popular and we regularly post about new books, authors and book discussions, enabling us to engage with our patrons and more importantly re-engage with old ones.We have initiated a JP service by appointment and will continue to do photocopying and printing for our community. Finally, we are very excited to announce that the 2020 Wattle Range Photographic Exhibition will be held virtually, and entries accepted digitally. Discussions are currently underway to finalise the categories, along with key dates and judges.”

The Federal Government has launched the improved and repurposed My Skills website which will now focus on online training, giving Australians a chance to upskill.. The My Skills website has been tailored to offer more ways for Australians to improve their qualifications online. Australians will now be able to search the increased online offerings of registered training organisations (RTOs) and vocational education and training (VET) options currently available to continue to train for the future. Minister for Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, said the Morrison Government was focused on giving Australians more training and career opportunities. “As more Australians stay at home, we want them to be able to make the most of this time by upskilling and preparing themselves for future opportunities,” Minister Cash said. Assistant Minister for Vocational Education, Training and Apprenticeships Steve Irons said RTOs have been working with the Government to offer more online courses for Australians.
“...the increased delivery of online learning would improve flexibility, whilst providing another avenue for Australians to update their skills, or to retrain...”
“The increased delivery of online learning would improve flexibility, whilst providing another avenue for Australians to update their skills, or to retrain,” said Assistant Minister Irons. Member for Barker Tony Pasin said for those in our local area of Barker this would also provide an excellent opportunity to study a whole range of course offerings from a range of training institutions from around the country and potentially even something that may not have been available to them before. “A VET qualification opens the door to so many job opportunities, and nationally recognised qualifications can be gained in a matter of months,” Mr Pasin said. My Skills is the national directory of VET organisations and courses — an Australian Government initiative that helps consumers search and compare VET courses and training providers. The launch of the improved and repurposed My Skills website complements the Morrison Government’s existing programs to support Australian workers with the Skills Match Tool prominently featured on the website. The Skills Match Tool provides intuitive career guidance for Australians looking to choose or change careers based on the user’s previous work experience and qualifications. This includes providing information on a career’s likely income, whether the industry is in growth and what future pathways are available. For more information visit www. myskills.gov.au

BirdLife Australia and the Recovery Team have announced that the 2020 Annual Cocky Count for the South-eastern Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo, will be conducted in a new format this year with Saturday, May 2, being promoted as a Look to the Skies event, where everyone in the Red-tail’s range can conduct the count from their own homes. “Whether you have a small backyard or a large property we would love you to head outside in the morning and late afternoon of 2 May and keep an eye out for any Red-tails, said project coordinator Kelsey Bennett. “This does mean that only people who live in the Red-tails’ range can participate in the event. The Red-tail habitat covers an area ranging from Mount Gambier to Keith in South Australia, and Nelson to Little Desert in Victoria. All people living within this range are encouraged to search on the day and no prior bird survey experience is required. If participants are not sure what a Red-tail looks or sounds like they can head to our website at www. redtail.com.au If a participant is planning on taking part in the event, they can let us know by phone or email, and we ask that if anyone sees any birds on the day to send in a sighting report. All sightings can be reported to the project coordinator on Free-call 1800 262 062 or via our website www.redtail.com. au or email redtail@birdlife.org.au. Just include your name, time of sighting, how many Red-tails were seen and where (map reference is preferable) and what they were doing (i.e. feeding). If anyone sees any cockies between now and May 2, organisers are encouraging people to send in those sightings as well. “We are especially keen to try and get as many landholders involved as possible, as we are still hoping to conduct the annual flock counts which will help us gain an indication of breeding success in the population, Kelsey said. “To do this we need to know the location of as many large flocks as possible, especially where they come in to drink from stock troughs, dams, etc." For more information on the event or to express your interest in participating please contact Kelsey Bennett on 1800 262 062 or email redtail@birdlife.org.au The count is made possible with the support of the South East Natural Resources Management Board, Wimmera Catchment Management Authority and Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

Year 9-12 GRAVEYARD SHIFT IN GHOST TOWN Michael Pryor Anton Marin and Rani Cross team up again to fight the ghosts that are plaguing the city. And now there’s a vicious ghost-hunting faction in town as well. A highly entertaining sequel to the smart, snappy and funny Gap Year in Ghost Town. So, how’s my gap year going? Is it giving me a taste of the ghost-hunting business or is it just dumping me into situations where I could end up dead, or worse? Lingerers. Moaners. Thugs. Weepers. So many ghosts. Not enough graveyard shifts in a night. When an extreme ghost plague descends on the city, Anton and Rani must work overtime to keep the city safe and to find the source of the new aggressive ghost outbreak. And it amps up to another level after ghost hunters become the hunted. Anton and Rani will need all their wits and wiles about them if they are to manage the ghost influx, get to the truth about the Elsewhere and navigate the night with all their limbs intact. Graveyard Shift in Ghost Town is thoroughly entertaining and full of nail-biting ghostly action and adventure. Michael Pryor has published more than 25 fantasy books and more than 40 short stories, from literary fiction to science fiction to slapstick humour. Michael’s most recent books include The Chronicles of Krangor series for younger readers, The Laws of Magic series and The Extraordinaires series for older readers, as well as 10 Futures, a collection of interlinked stories imagining what our next 100 years might be like, and middle grade technothriller Machine Wars.
Year 6-9 FINAL STORM Deborah Abela In a world of wild weather, is anyone safe? Isabella, Griffin and their friends have settled into New City, enrolled in school and are making new friends, including the charming Aleksander Larsen. But their home is facing a new threat – weather patterns are becoming erratic and fierce ice storms batter the city. When someone from Isabella’s past returns, loyalties are tested. Who is watching her from the shadows? And can Isabella and Griffin’s friendship survive this furious final storm? Final Storm is the final instalment of the Grimsdon trilogy, which was inspired by governments around the world not taking enough care of the planet. Grimsdon was the initial book, followed by New City and now The Final Storm. When the city of Grimsdon floods, a group of kids is left in the ruins along with sea monsters, flying machines and sneaker waves. Isabella, her best friend Griffin and three other children, survive with Griffin’s brilliant inventions and Isabella’s fighting skills. When a mysterious boy arrives in his flying machine, they wonder if letting him into their lives will lead to a way out or into even more danger. The sequel, New City, takes the issue of a climatechanged world further by asking what happens to people when wild weather drives them out of their homes? This time, there are ornithopters, ice tornadoes, rescue eagles and a brand new bad guy. Deborah is an Australian author of children’s books, most notably the Max Remy, Super Spy series, the Grimsdon trilogy and Teresa A New Australian. She has been writing for 15 years.

When Lucindale’s Will Gould’s name was not called out in the first round of the 2019 AFL National Draft, he and his housemate Harry Schoenberg drove to his family property at Lucindale to shear for the day and keep their minds off the upcoming rounds that night. Schoenberg was taken at pick 24 and Gould was taken at pick 26 by the Sydney Swans but little did he know he would be back home working on the family property so soon. Speaking to SEN SA’s Andrew Hayes and Kane Cornes last week, Will shared how he has been spending his time since the AFL season was put on hold. “I didn’t think I’d be back o the farm so quickly,” he said. “The last few weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind with everything that’s going on and it’s affecting everyone obviously.” Once the AFL seasons was shut down, Will flew back home and arrived on the Monday morning. “By Monday midday I was out on the farm helping dad – pretty much straight into it,” he said. In terms of giving his dad a hand, the timing could not have been better with plenty of cows having calves at the moment and given his dad’s run in with a chainsaw, it also saw Will basically chief in charge for a few days. “He was trimming back trees and a branch fell on the chainsaw and that went into his leg,” Will said. “It was a pretty deep scratch. He’s fine now and back working already. It wasn’t a fix it at home job.” And that could be the understatement of the year, with his mum driving the 50km to Naracoorte Hospital, where he was bundled into an ambulance and taken to Mount Gambier. “It was a little bit scary for a little bit,” Will said. The injury drama aside, the time at home has kept Will busy, working hard in the mornings and training in the afternoons, with only the temptation of his mum’s great home baking proving a challenge. “I’s probably one of the lucky ones that I’ve got a farm to get out on rather than sitting on the coach and
playing Fortnite and PlayStation and that sort of thing,” he said. The home cooking is also a perk. “We had a roast last night (Tuesday) and a fair bit of it,” Will said. “That stuff is not too bad, it’s the cakes and cookies I have to stay away from.” Fortunately, Will not only has the open spaces of the farm to get his running in, but also a well equipped home gym in the garage. “I am lucky the footy club at Lucindale helped me out with a few weights and things,” he said. Endurance is the number one area that has been identified as an area for Will to improve. “And it might be for a number of years to come,” he said. “Building that up to a level where I can be competitive with all the other guys to try and catch up to a level it’s needed to be to play AFL.” While Will’s taste of life at an AFL club has been more limited than he would have expected, he has loved every minute of becoming part of the Swans program. “I’ve never been much of a long distance runner but I enjoyed the challenge,” he said. “It’s something that needs to get done if I want to get where I want to be.” And Buddy Franklin looms as the man Will is watching closely and getting to know as he looks to mould himself into an AFL footballer, labelling him “the elite of the elite”. “He didn’t get that good without putting in the hard yards,” Will said. “I’ve been caught out at little bit in drills just watching him and get into a bit of trouble. He’s amazing to watch and learn from. He was one of the main guys who went out of his way to help us younger guys.” Lucindale was in fact, the place to be for spotting AFL players, with Crows forward Darcy Fogarty also spending some time in the district on his mother’s partner’s property as well during the shut down.
LOCAL SPORT Berkefeld named best for the 17th time The finals series was abandoned but the individual honours have still been awarded for the 2019/20 South East Coast Basketball League and the other senior Basketball Mount Gambier competition. And it was arguably the most familiar name in local basketball that again walked away with the Men’s Summer Season MVP. Bulldogs icon Simon Berkefeld claimed his 17th MVP nod after again leading his team in scoring, averaging 23 points per game and helping his team Bulldogs Blue finish second in the regular season. Still possessing a strong perimeter shooting game as well as the ability to weave his magic on the drive to the basket, Berkefeld had some strong competition to take out the top individual honour but his consistency and class again saw him claim his 17th season MVP. Other strong contenders in the men’s competition were Brad Rathjen, from Panthers, who led his team to a top of the table finish, dropping only one game during the season. Toby de Wit also had some monster games for his scrappy Cougars team, including a 54 point game against the Cats. A well known quiet achiever, Berkefeld was honoured to have claimed another award in what he views as a strong competition. “There are a lot of really good players in the league at the moment who would be deserving, so it is nice to get the award with that in mind,” he said. “I would like to thank my teammates for making this season another enjoyable one and the umpires who have the toughest job out of anyone.” The women’s competition also had a number of great performances from players, including a 33 point game by Emily Winter against the Bulldogs/Roos, a 32 point performance by Mikaela Horrigan and a 30 point outburst from Keryl Ousey. It was however Panthers young gun Tara Bryant who was awarded the MVP for the 2019/20 Summer season.
Tara had a consistent season for her Panthers side that finished the regular season third and she was really happy with her efforts this season. “‘I am really proud of how I have worked hard and played consistently throughout the season,” Tara said. “I’d like to thank my parents for supporting me and taking me to games, the coaches and my teammates, I’d also like to thank those that organise the competition.” The young star has been flourishing from beyond the arc, where she has become deadly, with her biggest output being a 23 point game against the Bulldogs/Roos, that included seven three pointers. And Tara has continued to find ways to improve. “I have continued to practice my shooting, I have been going for runs and doing some home workouts,” she said. Along with her season MVP, Tara was awarded the Sally Jane Allen/Trisha Flett Memorial Trophy as the junior with the highest MVP votes. The Bill Cook Trophy, that is awarded to the highest junior vot getter in the MVP count, was once again won by Duncan Reid of the Bulldogs Red.
Duncan a young athletic player that has spent some time recently working with the Mount Gambier Pioneers men’s program and has seen a real progression in his development and confidence on the court. Duncan’s time with the CBL Lakers side was another opportunity to develop his game and the award is proof his development is tracking in the right direction. Duncan made it clear he has had plenty of support to this point in his career. “I’d like to thank Matthew Berkefeld for the opportunities with the CBL Lakers side and to Richard Hill for the opportunity and time to improve my game,” Duncan said. “Scott O’Connor has been a great influence for me at the Bulldogs.” Duncan is also continuing to work on his game despite the hiatus in available competitions. “It has been hard but I have tried to stick to my usual schedule with basketball, on Monday and Wednesday I have basketball sessions at home and two other days I go for runs,” he said. Duncan averaged just over 18 points on the season including a 40 point outing against the Cats.

LOCAL New podcast focuses on sport in SA SPORT New equipment for croquet club
Hooked on Sport is a new podcast with South Australian sports columnist Ben Hook (pictured above left) created in response to life without our great sports clubs and communities. The podcast aims to give sporting clubs and their members an opportunity to stay connected with each other. It’s a way of giving a sense of purpose and belonging at a time when we can’t go about our normal sporting club activities. Hooked on Sport is a collaboration with Sport SA and Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation. Sport SA CEO Leah Cassidy said the podcast was developed to create a virtual space to collaborate during unprecedented times. “Sport plays a powerful role in people’s lives,” Ms Cassidy said. “The podcast will create a sense of partnership and community for our industry and allow us to come together to share this journey.” Breakthrough executive director John Mannion said there had never been a greater Portland Croquet Club has received more than $1000 in funding to purchase muchneeded equipment. The club was the recipient of the United Way Glenelg Lewis Court Fund to upgrade and replace old and worn equipment. The club used the money to buy two complete sets of balls and clips. Portland Croquet Club secretary Jan Gray (pictured above testing out the new equipment) said players now have a better standard of equipment for pennant and tournaments with non-competing club members having the use of better quality balls that have been passed down. The club has 38 members with approximately 20 players who will directly benefit from the new equipment. The purpose of the United Way Glenelg Lewis Court grant is to support community based recreational, social, and physical activities that contribute to good health and alleviate social isolation of our older community members. The Lewis Court Fund will open Saturday, August 1, this year and closes on Monday, August 31. To assist potential applicants and for those seeking information on our Community Fund and Lewis Court Fund grants. please go to our website unitedwayglenelg.com.au or contact executive officer Nicole Carr, for a one-on-one session on 0410 513 305

PAGE TURNER The Rip Curl Story • Tim Baker 50 years of perfect surf, international business, wild characters and the search for the ultimate ride. The Rip Curl Story is the remarkable tale of two young surfers – Doug ‘Claw’ Warbrick and Brian Singer – who pursued an audacious dream to make a living in pursuit of the ultimate ride. The brand they built, Rip Curl, not only satisfied their own surf wanderlust, but also inspired countless others, riding the wave of the global youth revolution of the late ’60s. Rip Curl’s mantra became ‘the Search’: the pursuit of new waves on distant shores, new thrills – skiing, snowboarding, windsurfing – and better equipment to elevate the experience. Along the way they supported the careers of many of the world’s great surfers – from Midget Farrelly to Michael Peterson, Tom Curren to Damien Hardman, Pam Burridge to Stephanie Gilmore, and of course Tyler Wright and Mick Fanning. Bestselling surf writer Tim Baker tells this implausible story in an irresistible series of ripping yarns, offering rich life lessons, a maverick business primer and a wild ride of adventure, good times and outlandish ambitions spectacularly realised. The Rip Curl Story will make you want to surf more, travel further, follow through on that great business idea and pursue your own Search.
