Classic board games Monopoly The history of Monopoly can be traced back to 1903 when American anti-monopolist Lizzie Magie created a game which she hoped would explain the single tax theory of Henry George. It was intended as an educational tool to illustrate the negative aspects of concentrating land in private monopolies. The first games of Monopoly were sold on February 6, 1935, and the original version of the game in this format was based on the streets of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Until 1991, Parker Bros only produced two versions of Monopoly - the US and the UK versions but when Hasbro acquired Parker Bros, it looked for public input on creating more alternate versions. There is even a Monopoly World Championship, which has been running since 1973 with the most recent World Championship took place September 2015 in Macau. Italian Nicolò Falcone is the reigning world champion .

Alutoxuchuryof Adopt A Healthcare Worker is a facebook campaign and it caught the attention of Grant High School teachers Donna Wild and Amy Holmes, who took on the challenge as an extra-curricular project with a group of students early this month. Aimed at supporting healthcare workers in a practical way, the Grant High School project decided on bringing a touch of luxury to local health workers’ lives by creating bath bombs. “Before making the bath bombs we talked with students about the ways the ingredients work together and how they can be beneficial,” Ms Wild said. “We also discussed the importance of looking after ourselves and how by giving these to healthcare workers we are also sending the “…it also reminded them of the importance of gratitude and kindness…”

“…bath bombs seemed to fit the need perfectly…”

message, that we want them to take care of themselves also.” Around 20 students took part in the bath bomb making project, creating the bath bombs and then packaging them in bags fashioned from recycled fabric. Around 75 bath bombs were created and packaged into 20 gift bags. “Bath bombs seemed to fit the need perfectly,” Mrs Holmes said. “It allowed us to create something that provides a little bit of luxury for our hardworking healthcare workers, while also filling a practical need. “ The bath bomb making also gave students a chance to step away from

their computer screens. “It also reminded them of the importance of gratitude and kindness,” Mrs Holmes said. Students have also participated in a short video to send a thank you message to local healthcare workers, while the bath bomb care packages have been delivered to Accident & Emergency. Above - Hannah Lamb was part of the bath bomb making team. Right - Marnee Formosa starts putting together the bath bombs.

The news you may have missed this week... I thought this week that I’d share with you the news that you may have missed. An old lady in England called Elizabeth feeds her corgi dogs 45p (ninety cent) cans of dog food that she buys from the supermarket. Well to be honest, she probably doesn’t get it from the supermarket. She’s an old lady. No wonder she lives in a palace though. She’s careful with her money. Let’s be honest, those dogs could be eating caviar and chopped up peasant, but she knows they’re just dogs. They lick their butt, so they don’t know the difference anyway. I bet she doesn’t feed her husband anything too fancy either, for the same reason. Speaking of dogs, another woman in England who is not a member of the royal family walked her pet pug recently through a park. She took a photo and shared it to her social media because the dog was hard to see with the comment, “Can you see my dog?” Her dog was hard to find, but he was definitely in the photo. Maybe you should go on the internet and see if you can find the picture, and then see if you can find the dog. I’ll wait. A man in England recently shared his recipe for KFC’s secret herbs and spices. He’d spent ten months testing out different combinations until he came to what he thought was a good copy of the original. I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure I’d be sharing that recipe after all that hard work. I’d be asking people to give me a dollar or two to share it. No doubt, with that sort of perseverance, and obvious talent, I’m sure he’s working on a recipe to sort out the virus. A woman in Australia has started

a new trend of taking bins out in fancy dresses. As I read it, it’s currently her one outing a week, so she feels that she should make an effort with how she presents herself. Good thinking. A woman recently invited her brother to move in with her. He wisely asked some questions though, just to check that there weren’t any conditions attached. Sure enough, she had a long list of rules. These included, no eating or drinking in the bedroom, must help with cleaning her dog, and he must be the designated driver when they go shopping. Luckily he was a law student so he was able to prove to her why that wasn’t legal. She was his landlord and a landlord can’t actually ask this of a tenant. A five year old boy in England begged his seven year old brother for an old man’s haircut. The older brother, not wanting to disappoint, searched the house until he found his father’s clippers. He did a lovely job of shaving a big bald spot onto his brother’s head. That’s all there really is to that one. Goats have taken over the streets of a coastal town in Wales recently. Without people on the streets, the goats have taken over, and by the sound of things the police have been

struggling to do anything about it. Must be rationing bullets in Welsh supermarkets obviously. Probably need to save them in case people get excited by Tom Jones music. In other news you might have missed, a polar bear in Alaska has been given the nickname Fat Albert. He is about thirty five stone over the average polar bear weight. It still seems a bit harsh to be giving him a mean name like that. I thought we were trying to be kind to others during these challenging times. Maybe locals could pitch in and buy him a gym membership (I’m not sure if gyms are closed in Alaska, but probably not, and who’s going to say no to a hundred stone polar bear anyway?) Am I the only one who is teaching their kids at home. Oh, yeah, it’s going great. If you can understand long division, email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com

as not to disturb the new seedlings. Although parsley is a herb, it can also be used decoratively in the garden. It makes an attractive border plant, perfect for edging a sunny part of the ornamental garden or even the vegie patch. When well-grown, parsley lasts for many months.

Design & Aesthetic - Performance & Reliability You don’t need a purpose-built herb garden. You can plant your herbs in a pot, trough or window-box, or pop some in among other plants in the garden. HERB GROWING AT A GLANCE • Herbs need sunlight, good drainage & regular water during dry weather. • Potted herbs need daily watering in really hot weather & sometimes twice a day. • Continually harvest herbs to keep them trim and shapely. • In autumn, collect seeds set by annual herbs, store them & re-plant in spring. • Parsley, sage and thyme continue to grow during winter. TEN HERBS TO GET YOUR STARTED Parsley; Basil; Mint; Thyme; Lemon Balm; Chives; Rocket; Rosemary; Bay & Sage

ROSEMARY An evergreen shrub, rosemary likes hot weather and lasts a number of years, even if the soil remains dry. It makes a good hedge and will grow happily in a container — trim it into shape at the end of summer. Rosemary is the perfect complement to lamb, and its woody stems make great skewers. It can be grown from cuttings.

THYME A groundcover that likes to creep over the earth or spill out of a pot, thyme needs a sunny, sheltered position. Available in many varieties, including lemon, woolly, caraway and common, this herb is great to walk on. A delicious flavouring for chicken, thyme also has antiseptic and antifungal properties, and is said to counter the effects of ageing. CHIVES This perennial herb is a member of the onion family and looks a little

like grass or a slender green onion. Chives grow happily in the garden or in pots and need a sunny spot with slightly moist soil. Simply snip off the outer leaves as you need them. Chives have pretty pink flowers in summer, which make a lovely (and edible) addition to salads.

PARSLEY One of the best herbs to begin with is parsley. You can buy it in punnets or small pots, but it’s also extremely easy and cheap to grow from seed. If you have a reasonable soil that holds moisture, just make a shallow furrow in damp soil, and sprinkle in some seeds. Alternatively, fill a punnet with potting mix and sow a few parsley seeds, then transplant when the seedlings are large enough to handle. Parsley shoots in three to four weeks, so you won’t need to wait long to see results. Hand-weed and watch out for hungry slugs or snails. Also, keep the soil moist by watering gently with a watering can with a large rose, or use a gentle setting on the hose nozzle so

Viridian can provide your home or business with a complete range of Stainless View Security Doors which provide ventilation without sacrificing security. Viridian provides the ultimate performance in your secuirty door applications, with a large range of colours. MINT Spearmint, Vietnamese mint, apple mint and pineapple mint are just some of the many varieties available. Mint is easy to grow in shady, moist areas, and in pots. You can harvest the leaves as needed and use them in drinks, Asian salads and sweets. Mint-infused tea is said to relieve anxiety and tension. Parsley and basil eventually flower, seed and die down, but mint is there for the long haul. Common mint spreads through the garden via underground stems, and for this reason it is usually recommended to grow it in a pot. Mint prefers a moist patch of soil, so its spread is usually curtailed when the plant runs out of moisture. Mint also does quite well in light shade and tends to shrivel in full sun. Once you’ve conquered ordinary mint, branch out into some of the more interesting scented mints such as lemon, ginger and apple mint. Mint is fairly foolproof, but it does attract tiny caterpillars that chew the leaves, often leaving nothing more than bare stalks. Check mint regularly for these pests, particularly when you see chewed leaves and droppings. You can try to control them by squashing them or could also apply a biological control. Pinch off any damaged growth and give chewed plants a good drink of water. A dose of liquid plant food encourages new growth.

BASIL This herb is easy to grow from seed — sow basil in spring and summer, then collect the seeds in autumn, as the plant will die off in winter. Key in Mediterranean cooking.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR HERBS Herbs need sunlight, good drainage and regular water during dry weather. Most prefer good soil, but don’t be tempted to add too much compost or manure, as you’ll get rapid growth at the expense of flavour. A good rule of thumb is to add one bag of compost or manure for every square metre. Some Mediterranean herbs, such as rosemary and sage, prefer poorer, lime-rich soils. Mulch the soil around the herbs, taking care not to build the mulch up against their stems — about 5cm of sugarcane mulch is adequate. When planting herbs in containers, use a good-quality potting mix and add water crystals to help the plants survive the summer heat. Instead of feeding herbs with chemical fertilisers, use a light mulch of cow manure and a weak watering of seaweed solution. That way, you can enjoy the leaves and flowers you’re eating, knowing they’re free of nasty residues. lifestyle1.net | 05

Rolling out the welcome mat in Naracoorte Narcoorte Lucindale Council has adopted a landscape plan to upgrade the southern entrance to Naracoorte on the Riddoch Highway. This is a key entry point to Naracoorte, and our plan is to create an inviting and attractive statement that will be implemented in stages. Stage one will commence in late April this year, with new oak trees being planted following the general alignment of the Riddoch Highway and extending the existing row of oak trees. The new trees will be planted following the first significant Autumn rainfall.

Local landholders affected by recent bushfires can now apply for up to $5000 funding through the South East NRM Board’s South East Fire Landscape Recovery Grants program. Soils coordinator Lucy Dodd said the grants will support South East landholders and farmers in the wake of the 2019/2020 bushfire season. “The funding can be used on for a variety of post-fire recovery works on private land,” Lucy said. “This could include pest plant and animal control, fencing to restrict stock from native vegetation, erosion control to stabilise soil, or replacing paddock trees.” Retrospective activity may also be considered, where recovery work has already been conducted. “The South East Fire Landscape Recovery Grants are intended to provide support to locals and to help restore the landscape and resources affected by this season of bushfire.” Affected landholders within the fire scars of major local bushfires including Keilira, Bunbury and Carcuma are eligible to apply. “The process will be merit based, and the Board will give preference to funding projects which demonstrate not only value for money but also agricultural and environmental benefit,” Lucy said. Guidelines and application forms are available on the Natural Resources South East website www.naturalresources.sa.gov.au/ southeast. Applications will be received until May 18. Time to show a little kindness A simple gesture of kindness has taken off across the Limestone Coast, as residents look for ways to reach out during isolation. The COVID Kindness neighbour card has been introduced by the Mount Gambier & Districts Health Advisory Council (MGDHAC) and in conjunction with Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell, is being made available via Lifestyle 1 for those unable to access printers. The card initiative, which was developed by a Queensland council, allows people to safely offer services to neighbours in isolation. Presiding Member of the MGDHAC, Maureen Klintberg said she hoped use of the cards would become widespread. “The COVID Kindness card is a nice way to show your neighbours you care,” she said. “The cards may be a lifeline for someone in need, who may just need a friendly chat. “You can offer to walk the dog, take the bins out or help out with shopping if someone is in isolation. It is times like this it is essential we support one another and show compassion to those who need it, neighbour to neighbour, street to street. “All you have to do is print the card out, add in your details and then pop the card into the mailbox or slide it under the door of those around you.” “If someone requires help, they can reach out to you on the number provided.” The card includes safety information, including hand-washing reminders and ways to avoid direct contact.

“…if this simple gesture can share the load just a little, we’re doing a wonderful service to our community…” Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell

“...it is essential we support one another and show compassion to those who need it, neighbour to neighbour, street to street...” Maureen Klintberg Mr Bell said he believed the initiative held major benefits for the local community. “Never has our mental health been more important than at this time,” he said. “Regional communities are famous for their resilience however we should all realise when we need to ask for, or share some help and support. “If this simple gesture can share the load just a little, we’re doing a wonderful service to our community.” If you require more copies, the easily downloadable card is available via a dedicated page named ‘COVID Kindness’ on Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell’s website, under the Community tab. They will also be printed copies available at local venues that are open for business, displaying COVID Kindness posters.

Mrs Klintberg said she was grateful to the Sunshine Coast Council for sharing their resources. “It’s such a simple method yet priceless to someone in need,” she said. “Self-isolation, loneliness and community disconnection are going to prove a major challenge for many people and we need to move to protect our mental health and wellbeing. “Let’s join together and support each other, showing how our proud Mount Gambier community can connect and build on community spirit and optimism. “I’d love to see these cards take off across the Limestone Coast and I encourage any interested councils or businesses to get in touch. Let’s spread this far and wide.”

The wait is over Last week saw the $14.6 million Penola Northern Bypass officially open to traffic, delivering significantly reduced heavy vehicle traffic through the Penola township, reduced travel time and a boost to South Australia’s economy. The Northern Bypass project has been jointly funded with the Federal Government contributing $11.7 million and the South Australian Government providing the remaining $2.9 million. Wattle Range Council also contributed, funding the property acquisition requirements for the bypass.

“…this is a fantastic day for our community…” Member for MacKillop Nick McBride “…(it) will improve freight efficiencies supporting the Limestone Coast’s highly productive economy…” Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin said the purpose of the Penola Bypass was to significantly reduce heavy vehicle traffic volumes through the Penola township, reducing conflict between heavy vehicles, pedestrians and local traffic within Penola. “Today (April 7) marks the completion of a project that has been 50 years

or more in the making,” Mr Pasin said. “The completion of this project highlights the importance of being able to work with a cooperative State Government that understands that the regions matter. This project has been a great example of Liberal and Coalition Governments working together to achieve positive outcomes for the residents of the Limestone Coast.” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the completed Penola Northern Bypass was a continuation of the Penola Southern Bypass and caters for commercial vehicles travelling on the Robe to Clay Wells Road and the Riddoch Highway. “The Penola Northern Bypass will improve freight efficiencies supporting the Limestone Coast’s highly productive economy,” Mr McCormack said. “It supported around 47 full time equivalent jobs and will deliver clear benefits to all road users in the region by reducing travel times and helping people reach their destinations sooner and safer. This important project forms part of the Federal Government’s record $100 billion infrastructure plan.” South Australian Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local

Government Stephan Knoll said the Penola Bypass was a critical piece of infrastructure for the Limestone Coast. “The Marshall Liberal Government understands how important regional roads and infrastructure are for the future prosperity of our State,” said Minister Knoll. “We are backing our regions and are delivering a host of measures to improve infrastructure such as the Penola Bypass to help grow regional economies and support regional jobs.” Member for MacKillop Nick McBride said he was proud to be part of a government that has been committed to see this bypass finished – and ahead of time.

“…the completion of this project highlights the importance of being able to work with a cooperative State Government that understands that the regions matter…” Member for Barker Tony Pasin “This is a fantastic day for our community,” said Mr McBride. “With the Northern and the Southern section of the bypass now completed, the so-called “road to nowhere” is no more. Vehicles will now have the option to bypass the township, reducing the number of heavy vehicles passing through Penola.

Member for Barker Tony Pasin; Member for MacKillop Nick McBride & Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll at the official opening of the Penola Northern Bypass

This will improve safety for local residents and businesses and enable them to concentrate on growing their town as an important tourism and commercial destination.” The Penola Bypass will have a posted speed of 60km/h to enable driver familiarisation, and to enable remaining works to continue safely, with full completion expected mid this year, weather permitting. The final posted speed limit of 100km/h is expected to be in place by the end of April, weather permitting. Other speed limits may apply in the immediate vicinity of works, and road users are asked to use extra caution when workers are on site, follow the direction of traffic management and observe traffic signage and speed limits when travelling through the area.

A Snapshot of the Northen Bypass • Construction of a new 2.2 kilometre undivided, sealed rural arterial road with sealed shoulders. • Construction of a T-junction at the Riddoch Highway (Church Street) where the new Northern Bypass will connect to the Highway to the north of the Penola township. • Upgrade of the junction at the Penola Bypass and the Robe to Clay Wells Road (where the Northern Bypass and Southern Bypass meet) to a staggered T-junction. • Realignment of the Riddoch Highway (Church Street) T-junction with the existing Southern Bypass to the south of the Penola Township to make the Bypass the through road. Year 9-12 MY FATHER’S SHADOW April 14 1927 - The first Volvo (pictured) car premieres in Gothenburg, Sweden. 1939 – John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath was first published. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and was cited prominently when Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1962. 1965 - Aussie cricketer Craig McDermott was born. He played 71 Tests for Australia, taking 291 wickets and then moved into bowling coaching.

Jannali Jones Kaya is completing her Higher School Certificate when she is woken in the middle of the night by her mother. They are to pack immediately and go to their holiday home in the Blue Mountains. Her father is ‘not coming back’. He has been involved in a court case to give evidence against some dangerous criminals. Months later, they are still in hiding and the mysteries are multiplying. Kaya is not sure who to trust: her mother’s new friend, the policeman or her new friend, Eric, from the local store. She is also recovering from memory loss caused by PTSD after a chilling encounter with the criminals. She is seeing a psychologist in an attempt to recall the evidence she might have to give in a forthcoming trial. Her best friend, Jenna, has gone overseas and Kaya is trying to make sense of what is really happening. Jannali Jones has crafted a thrilling story which stays on the edge right to the end.

Emma Carroll A body washed up on the beach... Evacuation to an old house with forbidden rooms and dark secrets... An animal rescue service... Set in World War Two, Emma Carroll explores the resilience, resourcefulness and inventiveness of children when their lives fall to pieces.

Dav Pilkey Petey learns what it means to do good in the seventh Dog Man book from worldwide bestselling author and artist Dav Pilkey. The Supa Buddies have been working hard to help Dog Man overcome his bad habits. But when his obsessions turn to fears, Dog Man finds himself the target of an all-new supervillain!

Year 2 THE BOY IN THE BIG BLUE GLASSES Susanne Gervay Sam doesn’t like his new glasses. They make his ears hurt. His parents say he looks handsome in them. But Sam just wants to look like himself. His teacher doesn’t recognize him — she says he must be a new superhero. But Sam doesn’t want to be a superhero. He just wants to be himself. Eventually, with a bit of confidence and a lot of humour, Sam finds out that wearing glasses isn’t so bad — and people still like him just the way he is after all.

Riddoch at home Riddoch Art Gallery and the Main Corner Complex in Mount Gambier and continuing to deliver exhibitions and programs, moving into the digital space rather than their usual bricks and mortar approach. Dubbed ‘Riddoch at Home’, the new digital program will offer online craft workshops and access to templates, profiling of local artists, content shared from current exhibitions and the stories of the esteemed Riddoch collection.

“…we are endeavouring to create positive content that can enrich your day in small or big ways…” Talie Teakle Arts and culture development officer Serena Wong said moving a raft of content online wold enable people to continue to pursue their artistic passions and give them a creative outlet. “Keeping your mind and body busy through creative endeavours are really central to maintaining some

kind of equilibrium,” Ms Wong said. Each week a different piece from the Riddoch collection will be shared with online audiences and a local artist profiled via social media aimed at delivering the cultural complex’s programs to its regular following while affording exposure to the broader community. The online offerings began earlier this month with Easter-themed craft and staff have been working behind the scenes to create content for the online workshops, developing templates, instructions and pictures. “The team have responded nimbly to the challenge of online programming, learning new online collaboration skills overnight to work together from our homes to create videos and digital content,” Main Corner coordinator Talie Teakle said. “There are also things like jewellery making, weaving and other kitchen table craft activities being planned that we look forward to bringing you from our homes to yours.

“We are endeavouring to create positive content that can enrich your day in small or big ways because we recognise that it’s what a lot of people need right now,” Ms Teakle said. ‘Riddoch at Home’ programming can be accessed via the The Riddoch & Main Corner Complex social media channels and website at www. riddochartgallery.org.au

The season might have been cut short before the 2019/20 finals series could be run and won but the Veolia Limestone Coast Women’s Football League still celebrated its season in style last Wednesday night with an online awards presentation. AFLW sisters Jess and Sarah Allan, who were part of the inaugural women’s football program in the region, under the leadership of their father Keith Allen, made guest appearances as part of the awards program. Giants player Jess was thrilled to see how the competition had evolved. “It is so great to see so many players involved who were part of the grassroots program I was involved in, about six years ago, when I started, Jess said. “Keep up the good work. Adelaide Crows defender Sarah was also excited to see just how far that inaugural program had grown. “The commitment shown by the players demonstrates a need for this competition in the South East, Sarah said. “I can’t wait for the competition to get bigger and better in the years to come – awesome work. North Gambier skipper Lorelle Walker, who had the thrill of playing alongside one of her daughters in season 2019/20, was part of that inaugural program and has been a mainstay of the Limestone Coast league. “I love footy and I have would have imagined five years ago that with the 16 players that would rock up on a Sunday afternoon to play one game of football with Keith Allan that we would turn into the 10 club league we are today, she said. “I love watching the girls get out there with their fight and their spirit and their passion for their teams and I know myself, I’ve made friends for life through football. Walker was one of 10 club captains that were part of the award night presentations, as was Adelaide Crows star Courtney Cramey, who was hopeful some of the stars of the individual awards would take advantage of the AFLW pathway. “There’s obviously a great future in footy with the AFL women’s league and hopefully one day soon we can see some of those girls inn a Crows guernsey, she said. Cramey had a close connection with the league in the 2019/20 season, taking a training session at Kybybolite. South Gambier was awarded the minor premiership after progressing through the minor round undefeated with captain Tess Andrews (pictured in action above), who also took home her 3rd League Best & Fairest award, thrilled with the season, despite its premature end. “Our goal this year was to absolutely have a good season and live up to the expectations that we set ourselves and what we knew we could do, and I think we did that, Andrews said. LOCAL Spoilt for choice SPORT PAGE TURNERS FROM TWO OF AUSTRALIA’S GREATEST EVER ATHLETES Perspective • Ellyse Perry Ellyse Perry is among the all-time cricket greats, and the only player, female or male, to represent Australia in both cricket and football World Cups, making her international debut in both sports at the age of 16. Perspective is about sitting back from the world you’re involved in and evaluating what it means to you. What are the important things that you know make experiences special? What are the things that motivate you? What are the things that give you joy? The things that challenge you but, ultimately, make you a better person? Most importantly, who are the people whose unwavering help and support you couldn’t go without? From the lessons of a high-performance athlete’s career to appreciating the small things in life, this inspiring illustrated book features stories and reflections from Ellyse’s childhood and career on the themes of dreaming, belief, work, resilience, appreciation, opportunity, balance and perseverance - and their importance in everything we do. Anna Meares Now • Anna Meares Anna Meares is one of the Australia’s greatest and most popular Olympians. She is the only Australian to have won individual medals at four consecutive Olympics. In 2004, she beat her sister Kerrie for a place in the Olympic team and became the first Australian female track cyclist to win gold. In 2008, she broke her neck in a track accident but still claimed silver eight months later in Beijing. In London in 2012, she dominated her arch-rival Victoria Pendletonin the women’s sprint final. Anna carried the Australian flag at the Rio opening ceremony in 2016, and won her sixth Olympic medal. And then what? Suddenly she faced new challenges, as a sportswoman whose career was over, and as an individual facing personal crises, including the death of her coach from motor neurone disease and the breakdown of her marriage. There was no playbook, no training regime ... how to cope? This was a bigger mountain than any she had previously faced. Anna Meares now, powering on in a new career, happy in her personal life and expecting her first child, and much wiser for all she has experienced, is an inspiring figure. Her twin stories, a winner on and off the track, make for one of the most important books ever written by an elite Olympic athlete.

What started out as a Friday night of fun for five year old Leila Croker, spending a couple of hours running, jumping and throwing, has quickly developed into a passion and nine years later she is shining on the State and national stage. “When I first started athletics, I participated in the sport for fun, however. over time I developed a love for athletics and decided to continue with the sport as I grew older,” Leila said. The hardest thing for Leila was to start finetuning her training and focus on a smaller number of events in order to hone her skills but that proved so difficult she did the only thing she could – chose heptathlon as her pet event. That sees Leila competing in seven events – the 90m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin and the 800m. “I have always admired the running and jumping events,” Leila said. “Despite this, the heptathlon has introduced me to some events that I didn’t know that I’d enjoy. “I soon began to love javelin and after learning how to hurdle properly, I always look forward to competing in the hurdles.” She has just returned from Brisbane having competed in her third ever heptathlon and was pleasantly surprised to return with a silver medal (picturedfright). “Brisbane was an incredible experience, even though it was quite hot,” Leila said. “It was the first time that I had been lucky enough to medal at a national competition. “ I came out of the competition with many new personal bests, new friends and a better understanding of the competition too.” Being part of the Limestone Coast regional Sporting Academy has also boosted her performances, making her a more rounded and better prepared athlete. “I am very grateful to be a part of the Limestone Coast Regional Sporting Academy,” Leila said. “One of the main ways that the academy has helped me grow is in terms of strength. “The strength and conditioning part of sport was something that I did not have access to before joining the academy. “I have learnt that over time, increased strength helps me to grow stronger and slowly improve my performances. “The Limestone Coast Regional Sporting Academy has also provided beneficial information sessions.

“...I have learnt that over time, increased strength helps me to grow stronger and slowly improve my performances...” “So far, I have learnt about many different topics concerning sport, including nutrition, injury prevention and recovery, mindset, goal setting and coping with pressure.” Leila also has the support of the Adelaide based Western Athletics Club and she works

“…my main motivation is my love for the sport…” closely, via correspondence with her coach, as well as travelling to Adelaide to represent the club at a variety of competition. “I can’t thank my coach and the other members of his squad for the guidance that they have given me and everything that they have taught me,” she said. Grateful, too, for the time and effort her parents, Jo and Jamie Croker, have devoted to allowing Leila to follow her athletics dreams. “Without them, I wouldn’t be able to travel or compete, or I wouldn’t be able to train,” Leila said. “I feel very privileged that mum and dad give up their time to take me to training, especially early in the morning.” It is certainly a full training schedule for the young athlete with six track and field sessions, one gym session and a morning pool session in what is a 12 month commitment, with October to April traditionally the busiest time of the athletics year. Leila also loves playing team sport and is a key player in her age group at the West Gambier Netball Club, where, not surprisingly with her running capacity, she is a mid court dynamo. Despite no athletics competitions on the horizon, Leila is as dedicated as ever to her training schedule. “My main motivation is my love for the sport,” she said. “I would rather be at training as I not only enjoy it, I can keep healthy and active, along with slowly continuing to improve. “In the next couple of years, my main focus is to keep improving and training hard to improve my overall heptathlon points and individual events. “I also hope to keep achieving at national level.”

“...I would rather be at training as I not only enjoy it, I can keep healthy and active...” Leila also had her first taste of professional running at the 2019 Mount Gambier Gift at Vansittart Park, winning the Under 14 120m Gift (pictured bottom right). Running off 11.75m, Leila completed her heat win in 14.382 and ran only slightly slower than that in the decider to greet the judge first in a time of 14.418. Leila also ran in the Under 18 550 , running that in a time of 1:20:56 to finish inside the top ten.

“…I came out of the competition with many new personal bests, new friends and a better understanding of the competition too…”

Reward for effort for junior Lakers The Mount Gambier Junior Lakers season has been cut short but two players have still been honoured for their stellar representative seasons with the Most Improved Junior Awards going to Under 14 players Henry Pedler and Macey Griffith. The South Australian Junior Country Championships were held early last month and proved to be the final tournament for the 2019.20 representative season but with a number of events already under their belts, the decision was made to still hand out these critical awards, which recognise hard work, commitment and enthusiasm to personal development and being a strong contributor for their team. Henry Pedler took out the Most Improved Junior Male Award after a season where regularly attended development sessions and was a member of the Lakers Under 14 Boys Division 3 team, which was coached by Jason Humphries and Tim Boxall. Testament to Henry’s improvement over the 2019.20 season was his elevation to the Division 1 team for the prestigious Bendigo tournament where the Lakers came home with gold. “I got to play with my friends and meet new ones and winning gold with the division team in Bendigo was a highlight,” Henry said. Henry was able to use his size to affect opposition teams shots and to rebound the ball and his efforts seemed to make all his team mates walk taller, too, and play with more confidence. “Basketball is my favourite sport and I want to play as much as I can,” Henry said. “My goal is to learn how to dunk.”

Macey Griffith was part of the Division 1 Under 14 Girls team and her continued improvement in many aspects of the game, including her fierceness as a competitor on court, earned her the Most Improved Junior Female Award for the Lakers program. Her hard work at trainings and development sessions were a key part of her securing the top award. “I enjoy playing with my teammates, we had a great team of girls who all got along well together,” Macey said. “I feel very lucky and proud to receive the award, I enjoyed improving my skills and putting them into practice during games. I would like to thank my coach Matt and past coaches that have helped along the way, also my teammates and especially thank my mum and dad for taking me to all trainings and games.”

FROM PAGE 25 Sophie Ford, from Kybybolite, was also pleased with her team’s season. “We’ve had a really exciting season,” she said. “We’ve got some really good up and comers.” Casterton Sandford skipper Scarlett Jarrad was also pleased with how the Cats season, its second in the league, panned out. “We really showed this year how far we’d come,” Jarrad said. “We picked up a lot of really skilful players and built our season from there. Club development was also the key takeaway for Glencoe’s captain Donna Jaeschke. “We had a lot of first time platers in our team and didn’t really have much experience but the improvement was really noticeable.” Penola’s Carmel Finch was also optimistic about the way forward for the Eagles. “Coming up we’ve got some really great young guns that will certainly secure our team into the future,” she said. “Really pleased with the season we’ve had.” And the development of players was a theme amongst the other captains with Mundulla’s Nat Twigden and Kalangadoo’s Tara Jeffree also on the same page. “One of the most enjoyable parts of the season seeing how everyone has developed both as individuals and as a group as a result of the hard work and effort they’ve put in,” Twigden said. “Definitely the skill level has gone up and it’s always good to be competitive,” Jeffree said. “It makes us push harder to raise our game.” Madi Thwaites, from Millicent, was also impressed with her side’s commitment to improve. “I couldn’t have asked for more from these girls and their determination was incredible,” she said. “As a cub we’ll be back bigger and better next year. And that’s the hope from Kongorong’s Kate Wright as well, after the Hawks’ inaugural season. “Next year we’re hoping for a few wins and improving,” Wright said. “We were new this year and didn’t have any wins but that didn’t stop us from having fun.” With the minor round complete, the individual honours were handed out, including Best & Fairest, Best Under 21, Leading Goalkicker and Team of the Year.
