Twelve Mount Gambier residents celebrated their first Australia Day as citizens when they took part in the City of Mount Gambier’s first citizenship ceremony of the year on January 26. Originating from India, Zambia, Syria, Congo and the Philippines, the 12 new citizens pledged their allegiance to their new home, joined a rousing rendition of the national anthem, before enjoying a rare treat at a citizenship ceremony – an Australian themed cake.
Held in the council chambers, the ceremony was presided by City of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin OAM and it was the highlight of her Australia Day duties. “I was honoured to preside over the ceremony and felt a real connection with the recipients,” Mayor Martin said. “The ceremony had special significance for not only the recipients but also me as I could see how genuinely thrilled they were.”
It was not the mayor’s first citizenship ceremony and she certainly felt Australia Day made for an extra special occasion. “I felt the ceremony had particular relevance being held on Australia Day and I could sense a real feeling of pride and happiness among the candidates as they had citizenship bestowed upon them on a day of such national significance,” Mayor Martin said. “It was a moving and uplifting occasion and it really brought home for me how wonderful it is to be Australian and how lucky we are to live in this great country.” Registered nurse Anu Babu, from India, and her husband Jithin Panicker, relocated to Mount Gambier from Adelaide three years ago with their daughter Diva and are expecting their second child soon. “Moving to Australia by myself in 2012 was a bit of a challenge for me and I struggled a lot in the beginning,”
Ms Babu said. “When we moved to Mount Gambier for employment it was a big move with a four month old but we like the beauty and greenery in Mount Gambier. I am feeling very proud to receive Australian Citizenship on Australia Day.” Fellow new citizen Norma King moved to Australia in January 2013 from the Philippines and moved to

Limestone Coast social welfare agency ac.care is calling for people to consider a career caring for young people in its residential care homes in Mount Gambier. A recruitment campaign has been launched to bolster the team staffing the 24/7 homes to meet the needs of an increasing number of children and young people entering state care. “We have around 15 permanent and casual roles for new staff members to join the team in our residential care homes,” ac.care out of home care manager Angela Wheeler said. “These roles involve meeting the daily needs of young people, as well as serving as positive role models for youths and children who are unable to live with their biological parents. “The role can be challenging at times, but there are certainly rewarding careers on offer through these positions, which focus on the wellbeing and development of young people, some of whom have sadly come from traumatic backgrounds and need to build strong and positive relationships to allow them to learn and grow.” ac.care operates four residential care homes in Mount Gambier, providing opportunities for children in state care to remain in the region, maintaining links to schools, sporting clubs and other connections. The agency also manages foster care placements across the region

and encourages people to open their hearts and homes to children in need of a safe and stable home. “With an increasing number of children in state care for various reasons, which are no fault of their own, we are facing a situation in which we need more foster carers and more residential care home staff to meet the needs of young people,” Ms Wheeler said.
The agency will hold two information sessions this month for potential candidates for the residential care roles, outlining the requirements, training provided and benefits of working for a not-for-profit organisation. Potential foster carers are also welcome at the sessions to learn about how they could provide care in their own homes on an occasional, short or long-term basis. The information sessions will be held on Thursday, February 6, and Wednesday, February 19, at 7pm at ac.care’s head office at 70-72 White Avenue in Mount Gambier. Visit the ac.care website or email care@accare.org.au for more information about working in residential care or becoming a foster carer.

Every now and then something pops into my head and it feels a little profound and like maybe I’ve learnt something. This happened to me this morning. I’ll share it with you and you can see if you think it’s actually as significant as it feels to me. Over the years I’ve heard the debate about moving Australia Day. The position many people hold is that it shouldn’t be a day we celebrate, considering it commemorates the date when English people invaded Australia, doing immeasurable damage to the original custodians of the land. As much as I respect people’s right to have that opinion and don’t have any problem with them feeling that way, I’d generally not been convinced that this was a good idea. Having said that, I also wasn’t particularly concerned about the possibility of changing the date. It
wouldn’t greatly upset me. Then this hit me this morning. I hate Halloween. I don’t know why I was thinking about that because we’re not in the Halloween part of the year. But I really object to Halloween. It’s an American celebration that doesn’t have any place in Australia. I’m offended by the prospect of having another culture’s celebrations forced onto me. To Indigenous Australians, that’s very much what Australia Day is. Another culture’s celebration being forced onto them. “They don’t have to celebrate,” some may say. I don’t have to celebrate Halloween either. But boy it still rubs me up the wrong way. For a couple of weeks leading up to the date, I’ll see it on tele, in shopping catalogues in the paper and generally have it rubbed in my face. And here’s the thing. Halloween doesn’t come with the baggage of the people who want me to participate in giving out lollies and putting pumpkins everywhere having killed my ancestors, destroyed my culture, taken some of my ancestors away from their parents, defiled important parts of my culture, denied me any reasonable rights as a human being for decades and generally treated me as less than human. Literally. Indigenous Australians weren’t even classified as people for the purpose of counting the population with censuses until 1967! My little Halloween analogy doesn’t even come close to describing
why the original Australians, and many others, think that the date of Australia Day should be changed. But when I think about how annoyed I am about people forcing Halloween onto us, it gives me a tiny, little, insignificant taste of how some Aboriginal people feel. So I think it’s time we moved the date. Let’s be honest, we’re not really that attached to that date anyway. I love Australia. My family have been in the country for many generations. I don’t think we’ve got convict blood (I’m pretty sure that’s my wife’s side of the family) but I think we came to the country some time in the mid 1800s. And I do care about the significance of the day Captain Arthur Phillip and the crew arrived here. But I don’t need all the current Australia Day shenanigans attached to that date. I think the day should be about celebrating Australia, Indigenous Australians and their culture and history, our modern multicultural society, and this date is not the best for that purpose. We can play cricket, have a barbecue, recognise government supporting stooges with Australia Day honours, go to the beach, drink too much, and reincorporate the Triple J Hottest 100 into another day which doesn’t offend a very important group of people in our great country. So what date to pick? It’s really difficult to come up with a date that commemorates something which is of significance to everyone. Impossible actually. How about the
date of the 1967 census which was a significant date in recognising the poor treatment of Aboriginal people previously, and a step in the direction of addressing the inequality? May 27th. High chance of poor weather so not ideal for the barbecue, beach etc. What about the date of the Mabo decision, when the Aboriginal people’s connections with the land were formally recognised? Another very significant date obviously, but once again June 3rd doesn’t lend itself to the type of celebration we’re used to. I’m not sure if the likely weather conditions should factor into our decision, but we’ve got to get this right. The last time we picked a date we didn’t change it for 73 years (and counting). After a reasonable amount of contemplation, I’ve decided that the most suitable date would be that of John Farnham’s farewell tour. Now we just need to work out which one? After something that made reasonable sense up to that point, it all fell apart at the end there, didn’t it? Excuse my ignorance and please keep in mind my intent when you send me emails to help me understand things better to robbietansel@gmail. com We’ve got twelve months to get this sorted. Email me if you’ve got a better date in mind.

Library launches new program
Wattle Range Council continues facilities redevelopment Wattle Range Council is continuing its work on the improvements to the Ridge Terrace courts in Millicent, all part of the Domain precinct project. Lighting, that stays on until 10pm every night, has been installed, there is a hit up wall and the new perimeter fence is close to completion. There are surveillance cameras and a net has been set up on one court with the next item on the to-do list being the repainting of the lines on the courts, which will include tennis, basketball, soccer and netball. Council is happy for people to already come down and test out the new facilities.
A new after school program at Mount Gambier Library will see youth creating their own music using newly acquired technology called ‘Groovebox Novation Circuits’. This joint initiative between Mount Gambier Library and 104.9 Lime FM commenced on Tuesday and will run every Monday during school terms with two half an hour sessions at 4pm and 4.30pm. The Novation Circuit is a standalone Groovebox sequencer with built in drum, bass and synth sounds. It’s a creatively inspiring music maker that is suitable for beginners or more experienced musicians. Aimed at youths aged 12 to 15 years participants are expected to see some creative results as their skills increase each week. “Mount Gambier Library is really excited to launch this new program for youth. I enjoy working with young people and I am passionate about seeing them develop new skills in positive ways,” library youth services coordinator Terasa Nearmy said. “I believe Groovebox will attract

young people who are looking to challenge their musical minds and find purpose through creating their own music using the Novation Circuit devices.” The newly acquired cutting edge music makers have been sponsored by Friends of the Library with tutorial expertise being led by Lime FM Station Manager Rohan Battersby who is donating his time to run the program. “I believe these little music-making machines will be beneficial for our wider community and delivering the program at Mount Gambier Library is a logical next step,” Mr Battersby said. “I want everyone in our community to experience the joy, fun and accessibility of music and Novation

Circuits help do that - they’re fun, they flow and they’re flexible.” The sessions are free for youth and are expected to book quickly. Bookings can be made one week in advance by contacting Mount Gambier Library (08)8721 2540 or online at www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au/library under ‘Programs and Events’. When I stop and think about it, I may have been a little impish as a child. Good girl, excellent scholar but I did come with my share of mischievous secrets that gave me that air of rebellion, that feeling of devilishness. I recall having a love of butter from an early age, not on anything - just by itself. I remember secretly whisking away with the tub of butter and standing outside the front door scooping out the contents. I could vomit just thinking about it. I moved from dairy straight into sugar, stealing away to the front door with a packet of icing sugar and occasionally a spoon (usually I’d just tip up the bag). You’d think the resulting white moustache would’ve given me away on this little fetish! My darker side emerged when I began licking the chicken crimpy biscuits and throwing the soggy carcasses behind the television. That gig didn’t last long – mum cottoned on to that one pretty quick when she stuck her hand in them. Not a fond memory for either of us. But the biggy and longest lasting secret was my terrible stint of playing with matches. Naughty in itself, but when I played with them and set the buffet hutch slightly alight that was bad. I had to keep my angelic reputation in tact, so I grabbed my crayons, coloured in the offending scorch mark and placed an ash tray on top. I had to keep that ash tray in place for six months before that damn hutch was sold (the ash tray went with it, I think I’d glued it in place by that time). Dark secrets indeed. What’s worrying is Mr Two Year Old already seems to have developed a butter fetish and Mr Five Year Old does love his Dixie Drumsticks. What did mum always say about your childhood coming back to haunt you …

The funds are 100% donated to their chosen family, most recently totalling just over $3000.
Bella, Ella, Jess and Abbey have shown what a huge impact a small gesture can make, their selflessness, passion and initiative is something significant to be recognised. EVENT OF THE YEAR Rural Women’s Day Rural Women’s Day, held in October last year and organised by Jackie Elliott, was designed to showcase rural and regional women of the Western District and beyond. Jackie attended the Great Hamilton Events Forum to get a better understanding of running an event, marketing and applying for grants. Jackie was successful in receiving grants to find the event from Glenelg Hopkins CMA, Look over the Farm Gate, Bendigo Bank, and Southern Grampians Shire Council Greater Grants program. The day was also supported by more than 30 local businesses. The event focused on rural and regional women who

MJ Dance Studio unofficially kickstarted 2020 with a day of outstanding workshops, which saw dancers from Hype also take up the opportunity for the contemporary and hip hop sessions with two of Australia’s best. Adelaide based Jadey Roberts and Melbourne’s Zoee Marsh ran the day of classes for dancers of all ages and abilities from across the region. “They were awesome workshops,” MJ Dance Studio director Maria Slape said. “Such a great way to start the year and it gets everyone enthusiastic as well as teaching them new skills.” Jadey was in charge of the hip hop sessions, while Zoee ran the contemporary classes and while Maria is well known for bringing a number of Australia’s top teachers and choreographers to the region, it was Zoee that initially flagged running sessions in Mount Gambier. She was adjudicating at Warrnambool’s Jump Dance Challenge and saw the MJ dancers in action.
“Their sportsmanship and talent was obvious,” Zoee said. “I went up and thanked Maria for what she does, her passion and then I decided to reach out to see if I could come and work with the students.” Zoee grew up in Geelong and has always focussed on ensuring regionally based dancers also get access to high level teaching and with Zoee having stepped back from

“I have stepped back from teaching as much and I basically only do what I really want to do,” Zoee said. “When I was growing up in Geelong I didn’t get these kind of opportunities often and I remember what it was like to be a regional kid.” And the planets aligned – with Maria suggesting the January 22 date, which turned out to be Zoee’s only free day in January. Before she had even taught a step, Zoee was impressed with the MJ Dance Studio set up. “It was great to see a purpose built space for a dance school,” Zoee said. But it is safe to say it was still the students the impressed the most. “The kids here really want to learn,” Zoee said. “To see them training so hard is really nice. There is so much talent in Mount Gambier.” And Zoee speaks from years of experience not just her recent adjudicating and teaching. She has worked, most recently, with Ryan Thompson, one of MJ’s most recent graduates, as well as Euan
Sophie Lewis
Doidge, Cristina D’Agostino and MJ’s inaugural graduate to pursue a dancing career – Daniel Ryan. “I started teaching Ryan (Thompson) and when he told me he was from Mount Gambier I could tell he was an MJ dancer,” Zoee said. “He was focussed in class and was knowledgeable and great at working with other people and the choreographers.” Zoee would have loved more time at the studio but she was pleased she was able to teach three different routines to each class. “I think it’s important to treat all the age groups differently and give each class something different to work on.” Above (main) - Jadey Roberts running through some choreography with a hip hop class. BRIGHTEN UP THE INDOORS Houseplants with interesting colors and patterns on their leaves started to trend in 2019 and will attract even more fans this year. Multicoloured foliage like crotons, Chinese evergreens, and stromanthe will become especially popular.
Cleaning hack for doors & windows
While sliding doors and window may look great, there's nothing worse than trying to clean the tracks the doors and windows slide on. Prone to collecting dust, dirt, dead bugs and debris, slider tracks manage to be the filthiest part of the house - and the hardest part to clean! Fortunately, we've discovered a hack that makes cleaning sliding door and window tracks super fast and easy. All you need is a sponge, a pen and a knife. Step 1. Lay the soft part of the sponge on the tracks and pop a black dot where each of the tracks meet the sponge.
Keeping it natural in the kitchen Timber A timber benchtop introduces a textured, organic surface into your kitchen to give it warmth and appeal. Solid timber brings an extra level of luxury to a space and, located in the hub of your home, your kitchen benchtops are an excellent starting point to make a style statement in your kitchen design. Natural Stone When you’re talking stone benchtops, you’re looking the higher end of the market – usually marble, granite or limestone. All three are natural products quarried from the earth in slabs and then honed and refined into what you see on many kitchen surfaces around the world. Stone benches are heavy and need to be installed by artisan suppliers with the facilities to lift, cut, hone, edge and stitch the stone together. It may
be the most aesthetically pleasing of all the bench options but it comes at a hefty cost, so make sure you do your homework. Being naturally porous, this type of bench will require regular maintenance throughout its lifetime to stay in good shape. Stone can also be easily damaged by regular household cleaners so, if you’re going to drop 15k-plus on a benchtop, make sure you factor in these potential extra costs. Reconstituted stone This variety of stone benchtop is produced by binding crushed natural stone with an acrylic resin to create a workable surface. Reconstituted stone is high performance and low maintenance, engineered to accommodate the needs of modern living.

Step 2. Then, using a knife, carefully slice into the sponge to create cuts deep enough to reach into the tracks. Step 3. Pop a bit of your preferred cleaning product on the sponge, then fit the freshly-cut grooves of the sponge over the tracks, then wipe from one side to the other.

Photo exhibition celebrates South East landmarks Paddock trees are an integral feature of the South East landscape and to celebrate these iconic landmarks, the South East NRM Board’s Power of Paddock Trees photo exhibition is touring the region. Bush management advisor Jacqui Owen said the exhibition features local people, local trees, and their stories. “Paddock trees are an important part of the landscape, providing food and habitat for native animals, shade for livestock and a focal point for family stories through generations,” Jacqui said. “Putting this exhibition together, it was really special to talk to members of the community and local landholders about their connection with the trees in the area.” The exhibition has two parts. The first is a series of 10 photographs, showcasing remnant trees in the landscape and highlighting their significance. The second part of the exhibition presents pairs of photographs of the same tree, some of the original images taken around 100 years ago, and a second photo taken from the same spot within the past couple of months. “The contrast between the photos over time is fascinating,” Jacqui said. “Although some of the trees have changed slightly over the century, it’s the surrounding landscape where we see significant modification.” “We’re excited to share these local paddock tree stories and photos with the community, and hope that the value of these icons of our landscape is recognised.” The exhibition is touring soon with launch events in each location, beginning in Naracoorte in February. Each event begins at 3pm and light refreshments will be provided. For more information or to register your attendance at a launch event please contact Jacqui jacqui.owen@sa.gov.au or 0428 155 989. Exhibition opening events: • Naracoorte – Monday, February 10 Sweet Espresso Cafe • Millicent – Wednesday, March 4 Millicent Library • Robe - Wednesday, April 8 Robe Hotel • Bordertown - Wednesday, May 6 Tatiara Council

STACKER DOORS Bacon & vegie rice slice 1 tbs olive oil 1 small brown onion, chopped 4 short-cut bacon rashers, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 250g microwavable long-grain rice 200g sweet potato coarsely grated
1 head broccoli, cut into florets, 1 cup (120g) frozen peas 1 1/4 cups (150g) grated cheese 5 eggs, Ground paprika, to serve (optional)
Method Preheat oven to 190°C. Line a 16cm x 26cm (base measurement) slice pan with baking paper, allowing the 2 long sides to overhang. Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Cook the onion and bacon, stirring occasionally, for 5 mins or until light golden. Add garlic and cook, stirring, for 30 secs. Transfer to a large bowl. Set aside to cool slightly. Heat the rice following packet directions. Add to the bacon mixture in the bowl with the sweet potato, broccoli, peas and 1 cup (120g) cheese. Stir until combined. Fold in the egg. Season. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan, pressing down firmly. Smooth the surface. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Lightly sprinkle with paprika, if desired. Bake for 30 mins or until set and golden brown. Set aside in the pan for 5 mins to cool slightly. Cut into pieces. Serve with salad and chutney.

Volunteers honoured at Wattle Range celebrations Wattle Range Council honoured a number of individuals at its celebration venues, with the spotlight shone momentarily to those who go above and beyond to give back to their community and when you scan their list of roles and responsibilities of each of the Australia Day Award winners, it is hard not to wonder where they find the time. CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (Kintore Ward) - Bob Wakelin From maintaining the parking bay on the Southern Ports Highway just outside of Beachport to ensure it is always mowed and weed and rubbish free to being a prominent supporter of the Beachport Hotel Social Club, Bob Wakelin is a character who is highly respected in the Beachport community. A former crayfish boat skipper and deck hand, the Vietnam War veteran, who was conscripted in 1966 for two years and served in Vietnam as Lance Corporal with A Company 3rd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment, the proud RSL member is a regular, not just at Beachport’s ANZAC Day dawn service, but also then heading to Millicent for its march and service. CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (Riddoch Ward) - Margaret Muller There would not be too many people in the Penola and district community that don’t know Margaret Muller. She has been intimately involved in a number of the community’s major rpojects and organisations including the Mary MacKillop Centre, Penola Branch of the National Trust, Penola District Cultural Fund, Penola High School and original member of what is now the Penola-Coonawarra Arts Festival. The festival’s writers component has been Marg’s baby and she has been coordinating the May program for eight years. A published author and renowned historian in her own right, Marg leads historical and
literacy tours to promote Penola’s rich history in poetry, in particular. Her fingerprints are all over Penola’s Poet Corner and she has been integral in the preservation and promotion of the history of Mary MacKillop, from compiling the history to running pilgrimage tours. CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (Sorby Adams Ward) - Victor Smith Victor Smith has been an integral part of the establishment and development of the Nangwarry Forest & Logging Museum from its inception 25 years ago. His has been museum manager and secretary from day one and has built the museum up from nothing to now house heavy machinery collections, priceless photo galleries, tools and equipment displays, original log truck and mill machinery. Vic has also been a great advocate for the Work for the Dole program, running a variety of projects for participants through the museum. CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (Corcoran Ward) - Craig Kuiper With 66 athletes on its books, the Millicent Little Athletics Club is a key community group and it is all thanks to Craig Kuiper’s passion and willingness to spend an inordinate amount of time to work with students from the district’s schools. Craig has been a member of the club for 13 years, including a stint as president from 2010-2015 and is now vice president and a conservative estimate would be Craig has given almost 1200 hours to develop and run the club, from setting up hurdles, to cooking the barbeque to lining the oval. A long serving Mt Burr cricketer and a member of the Millicent Golf Club, Craig is just that guy who does whatever job needs doing without question or complaint. YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (Kintore Ward) - Brandon Kimber Brandon Kimber has been in the
Army Cadets for seven years and last year was promoted to the Coorong Battalion Cadet Under Officer (CUO), making him the second highest ranked cadet in South Australia, in charge of six Army Cadet units throughout the whole of South Australia for the Coorong Battalion. Brandon is heavily involved in training for the army cadets, is integral to putting together the catafalque party for the Millicent ANZAC Day services and has been awarded the South Australian Army Cadet Commander’s Gold Commendation for being the Student of Merit on the Cadet Under Officer/Warrant Officer’s Promotion Course. Brandon has also been a key member of one of St Martins Lutheran College’s Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) teams that take part in various competitions and endurance races. Having completed Year 12 last year, Brandon is having a gap year before pursuing a career within the Australian Army. YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (Riddoch Ward) - Brooke Hutchesson When it comes to student leadership, Brooke Hutchesson has had no peer, holding a number of leadership roles at Penola High School and always being an eager participant at school events, including sports carnivals, Harmony Day celebrations, school tours, school formals and assemblies and she was the driver behind redeveloping the female bathrooms to make them a quit retreat and a safe space, rather than the usual ugly décor synonymous with those facilities. The raft of awards Brooke took home from last year’s presentation night is testament to how involved she was in school life – those awards including the Lions Leadership Award, Australian Defence Force Long Tan Youth Leadership & Teamwork Award, Barker Shield Award, for community
20 workshops and presentations showcasing local products, businesses and services that support every aspect of wellbeing, plus activities, games, food, and music. Running from 9am to 3pm, entry to the festival is free, as are the
Penola event as it brought the whole community together from children of all ages to many local businesses and individuals contributing in many different ways. What started out as a low key fundraiser and awareness campaign for the McGrath Foundation, on the back of one of the girl’s firsthand experience with a foundation beast care nurse, became a month long event that saw Penola literally, turn pink. A major coup was gaining the BreastScreenSA Mobile Unit for ten days to allow women to have their check-ups locally in Penola, which saw almost 250 women screened. There were numerous functions, beard and head shaves, a colour run, a donut drive, workshops and raffles, with schools, sporting clubs, businesses and community groups all getting on board. The final fundraising figure was more than $45,000 and as importantly, was the number of conversations the month long campaign generated. Above - The Pink Up Penola team celebrate being awarded the Wattle Range Communtiy Event of the Year.
Community grants on offer
Wellbeing in the spotlight
Chronic Illness Support Limestone Coast initiated a Wellness and Wellbeing Festival a few years ago and it is coming up again on Saturday, February 15 at Mount Gambier’s Main Corner, City Hall and Library. The festival will include 28 stalls,
service and spirit, a Year 12 Academic Excellence Award and an Order of Australia Student Citizenship Award. YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (Corcoran Ward) - Sally Sapiatzer Sally Sapiatzer lost her grandfather to lung cancer as a child ad it has spurred the passionate community advocate to raise awareness and funds for the Cancer Council and over the years, through Daffodil Day, Australia Biggest Morning Tea and Harmony Day she has raised thousands of dollars. And she has also taken practical steps to raise sun safety awareness in the district’s primary schools. A high achieving student at Millicent High School, Sally was honoured with a Merit Award for Young Employee of the Year at last year’s Millicent Business Community Association (MBCA) Outstanding Business Awards and she is a former recipient of a Wattle Range Youth Recognition Award in the Community Category. COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR (Riddoch Ward) - Pink Up Penola It is safe to say, there was no one in the Penola community that did not get behind the inaugural Pink Up
workshops and presentations, but bring some gold coins for raffle tickets and books for the book swap. As part of the festival a community panel, made up of people who all have different experiences with disability and chronic illness, will run a Q&A session to lift the lid on what living with these conditions is really like. Keep up to date with all the festival news by following the group on facebook and for further information contact Tessa Deak on 0497 184 590 or email tadeak@hotmail.com The even has been made possible thanks to the generosity of the City of Mount Gambier and gold sponsor 963 Triple M, silver sponsors Uni SA, and MiniJumbuk, as well as Bronze Sponsors and other kind donors.

New home earmarked for Naracoorte Library A major step forward in the proposed redevelopment of the Naracoorte Library has been taken with Naracoorte Lucindale Council purchasing the Naracoorte Herald building to be the new home of the community facility. The Smith Street property will undergo a potential $2million makeover and council considers the new home for the facility to be an affordable option for both council and the community. Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Erika Vickery admitted it had been a protracted process that started before the 2018 Local Government elections, including investigating renovating the facility at its current site and taking into consideration the significant community engagement and feedback, design options, and the services that council considered appropriate and relevant for our community.
“This significant decision will, in our opinion, provide excellent outcomes for the community in providing a quality library service in a very central location,” Mayor Vickery OAM said. “The ability to internally link the Herald Building with the Naracoorte Town Hall will enable greater flexibility of use of both buildings and enliven the Smith Street precinct. “Council acknowledges the community’s past frustration with this project, but that ultimately, it is preferable to make the right decisions for the right reasons, which we believe we have now done, and shows a strong and collective leadership by elected council.” An architect is now set to be engaged to provide internal design and fit out plans, front façade designs, and ideas for streetscape
development to provide a focus for the Library and Town Hall sites. Once council is satisfied with internal design options, tenders will be called to undertake the required works, with a preference to utilise local contractors. Subject to tender outcomes, it is envisaged that this project could be funded through cash reserves held by council or a blend of cash reserves and loan funds. There is an expectation that development costs, and ongoing operational costs will not place any additional financial burden on council rates. The old library site on DeGaris Place will now be assessed for renovation and repair and will be transformed into council chambers or office space.
Have your say on the future The Glenelg Shire 2040 conversation is continuing and residents are invited to attend a pop up engagement session in their township this February to have their say on what the community’s vision should look like for the next 20 years. The Glenelg Shire 2040 project team will be visiting the communities of Tyrendarra, Cape Bridgewater, Nelson and Heywood throughout the month of February to gather valuable feedback and ideas from local residents. Engagement sessions will take place at iconic events, such as the Heywood Wood, Wine and Roses, and at standalone community workshops. Glenelg Shire 2040 project lead Cherie Arnott said she was hoping to chat to residents of all ages across the shire to best gather long-term needs, hopes and priorities. “We want to hear what you love about the Glenelg Shire, what challenges and opportunities you think our community will face between now and 2040 and your big ideas for making the shire an even better place to live, study, work and play,” she said. “Since the 2040 Event Launch in September last year we have spoken to residents at consultation sessions in Dartmoor, Narrawong, Digby and Casterton on a range of topics such as the environment, transport
and innovation.” Ms Arnott said no RSVPs were necessary for the workshop events in Nelson and Cape Bridgewater. “The workshops are designed to be flexible, so pop in anytime during the workshop times to have your say,” she said. Kennett Builders and Grant District Council are quickly back into construction mode for 2020 with the foundation works for Stage 1 of the terminal redevelopment underway, representing an exciting next step in this $9.2M project. In the coming months, Stage 1 works will include structural framework and the internal fitout, assisting the transition for Stage 2 works to commence towards the middle of this year. This staged approach ensures ongoing safe and efficient operations at the airport during the project. Member for Barker Tony Pasin said it was really exciting to see the project taking shape. “The terminal upgrade will give a whole new welcome experience for fly-in visitors to the Limestone Coast meaning our region will begin to impress right from the first step off the plane,” Mr Pasin said. “Our government is investing in the project because we see the long term benefits- creating more jobs, driving economic growth and building a better region.” District Council of Grant chief executive officer Darryl Whicker is also pleased with the progress. “Years of planning has been undertaken behind the scenes to get to this point and pouring concrete for the terminal represents an exciting milestone for staff, council,
community, visitors and airport tenants and partners alike “ Mr Whicker said. “With the runway extension completed and commissioned late 2019, and the heavy aircraft apron and upgraded electrical system also now complete, the terminal will now really be the focus for council and the community over the next 12 months.” Expansion of the terminal will provide the infrastructure required to meet the ongoing increase in travellers and air services through the Mount Gambier Regional Airport. Serviced by Regional Express (Rex) Airlines, passenger numbers have steadily increased over the past
three years. The first quarter report for 2019 charted that 22,388 people flew with REX, in and out of Mount Gambier, between July and September 2019 – up by 11.4% from the previous year. “The Limestone Coast is an iconic tourism destination and with tourism numbers growing each year, having a high level terminal and supporting infrastructure is essential to support regional growth,” Mr Whicker said. The Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade is funded by the Australian Government through the Building Better Regions Fund in partnership with the South Australian State Government.

Community project to be unveiled during the Fringe There are some beautiful murals being painted at the moment by local artists Jeremy Ievins and Sadiki down adjacent the Mount Gambier Rail Lands. Their creations are part of a project known as the Great Wall of Cultures, organised by the Migrant Resource Centre (MRC). The paintings will line the MRC’s back fence along the popular Rail Land precinct, and also their driveway on Eleanor Street. The final panel will be painted during Fringe Mount Gambier’s Fringeland event on Saturday, March 21, with an official unveiling at the Rail Lands on Monday, March 23.
LOCAL Gold Cup heads to Gawler SPORT
Last year harness racing trainer Aaron Bain had to settle for second at the Matthews Petroleum Gold Cup when Iam Erik and Dave Drury got the better of the Gawler trained Ideal World. But this year, Mark Billinger drove the perfect race, leading all the way in the 2590m feature race to claim Bain’s first Mount Gambier Gold Cup, adding it to his only other Mount Gambier silverware – a derby – as well as last year’s Kadina Cup and a recent cup win in Tasmania in the North Eastern Pacing Cup. In fact, the stables were back in Tasmania on Sunday, competing for the $30,000 Devonport Cup. Aaron’s father Peter, who is president of the Gawler Harness Racing Club, represented Aaron and connections at Greenwald Paceway on Saturday night, and was emotional when Alcatraz Lass passed the post clearly in front. “A lot of work goes into these horses and it is all the stable staff – you just don’t get the horses here and rock up and win a race, it is a real team effort,” Peter said. “It’s a wonderful night for us and I thank the community of Mount Gambier
for supporting an event like tonight. We had our doubters after Sunday at the trials but we knew what the problem was and rectified it during the week…it’s going to be a good trip home.” The minor placings in the cup went to Captain Snoozzze, from Arden Winstar, which was trained and driven by 2019 winner David Drury, who had earlier taken out the opening race of the night, the TAB Pace, with Steam Cleaned finishing fourth. Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club president Mick Lamond thanked sponsors Matthews Petroleum, Baxter Hire & CUB and the large crowd for supporting the club’s headline meeting for the season. The Canny Ever Mount Gambier Trotter’s Cup and Mountain View Mount Gambier Derby were the two other feature races on the Gold Cup program with the Barker family combining with Glorious Finale, while Steve Fennell trained the Derby winner – Ash Park. The Gold Cup wasn’t the only success for the Bain stables though, with the night starting off on a high when Miss Soapbox took out race three – the Baxter Hire Pace.
Jim and Rod Barker combined successfully again when Sheeza Pony won the Bendigo Bank Pace and it was also a family affair when Brent Howard drove Auckland Miss to victory in the City of Mount Gambier Pace for his father, trainer Graeme Howard. And that theme continued right through to the last, Heat 3 of the Stuckey Electrical Kindergarten Class, when the Alyce Finnis trained Sanur Beach saluted with husband Jayson Finnis in the driver’s seat.
Harness racing community bands together for cancer fundraiser The Team Teal campaign was created by Duncan McPherson OAM who lost his wife Lyn to ovarian cancer in 2010. In failing health, Lyn began fundraising for cancer research, an initiative that Duncan connected with his devotion to trotters in 2014, co-founding Team Teal with Michael Taranto and Jim Connelly. Duncan and Michael are both passionate harness racing owners and trainers, both in Australia and overseas, and Team Teal is a way to associate this passion with their chosen charitable cause to fund clinical research nurses. The campaign expanded from Victoria to New South Wales in 2016, then to all Australian states in 2017 and internationally to New Zealand in 2018. For six weeks from the beginning of February each year, all reinswomen in participating jurisdictions race in teal driving pants, striving to be first across the line to secure donations from harness racing controlling bodies, betting partners, trainers and other sponsors.
Locally, Jackie Barker is the ambassador for Team Teal, a long time supporter of the Mount Gambeir Harness Racing Club, with the pony trots drivers also getting into the act, wearing the teal pants and also shaking the cans at harness racing meetins this month, including the weekend’s Gold Cup. The success of Team Teal not only relies on sponsorship by principal sponsors, but also on the fundraising efforts of the wider harness racing community. Cash, cheques (payable to Women’s Cancer Foundation) and credit card deposits are available via our bank account, please email or call the Women’s Cancer Foundation for direct bank account details at events@anzgog.org.au or phone (03)9867 3515 Right - Molly Hinch & Amity Formosa were part of a contingent of pony trots drivers who were working the crowd and raising money for Team Teal.

WEATHER CHAOS
The Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association cannot take a trick in the 2019/20 season with the extremes of weather causing chaos with the association’s match fixture. Not for the first time, mid week T20 clashes were abaondoned due to the association’s heat policy this week, thanks to Thursday’s extreme temperatures, while the weekend matches were washed out - again not for the first time this season. As the finals fast approach, association officials are hopeful of getting in a weekend of matches this coming weekend.

For someone with a resume like Karla Bowd, you would think she has been playing 8 Ball for decades but nothing could be further from the truth for the South Australian representative, who plays locally out of the German Club, competing in both the South East Women’s 8 Ball League and the Mount Gambier 8 Ball Association. She first picked up a cue as an 18 year old but never took the game seriously and gave it away for a good two decades. Enter – her son. She went to watch him play one night four years ago and a team was short so she picked up a cue again and has never looked back.“I was just there to watch and now I’ve been playing full time ever since, Karla said. Two years ago she set herself a goal to play at Nationals representing South Australia and she has ticked that box and has a taste for more, looking to again go head to head with the nation’s best players in 2020. Her top 10 finish in 2019 has inspired her to work even harder and her performance at nationals made her feel like she belongs.“I had a more than 50 percent win ratio and that is what the best players are striving for so to get 57 per cent I was really happy, she said. Her form locally in 2019 was also outstanding, taking out the most singles wins for the season, beating out long time holder of that honour – Chris Schembri. She represented the South East Women’s 8 Ball League at State Championships and her results warranted an invitation to State team selections last August, which saw up to 50 players competing for no more than seven spots on the SA team. Karla made the cut and headed to AlburyWodonga in October to compete at her first national championships where her team finished third. “It

was a real step up playing at that level, Karla said. “Given I haven’t played for as long as a lot of the other players I am lucky I seem to have natural ability. That being said, she trains and plays competitively on a regular basis so she is always working on her game and as we speak, the girls set to represent the local league at the State carnival and, in turn, be in the running for State team selection are hard at it at the moment training as regularly as possible. “We make sure we catch up once a week for a couple of hours to practice and because when you are part of a team it is important to really get to know each other as well, Karla said. It is an experienced team, four of which have already competed at nationals, so the girls want to ensure their skills are sharp so they can concentrate on actual match play when it matters most. “It is a very, very tactical game, Karla said. “You have to really think about every shot and plan ahead. Last year, the South East team finished second at the State event. Aside from her usual domestic competitions, Karla competes at about two other competitions a month, heading to locations including Berri, Mildura, Adelaide, Portland, Warrnambool, Ballarat and Horsham. “I am off to Geelong in a few weeks for what is a really tough competition, Karla said. And at the weekend she was competing at the 2nd Annual German Club Square Mile Challenge at the Yahl based club with full results in next week’s Lifestyle1. Above - 8 Ball champion Karla Bowd ho will be juggling her work committments around a raft of critical tournaments in the lead up to the State carnival & State selection this year.

LOCAL Kings of cricket SPORT The South East has returned from last month’s South Australian Country Championships with the Under 12 Country Cup firmly in their grasp. Made up of players from Bordertown, Lucindale, Naracoorte, Millicent and Mount Gambier based clubs, the 13 player squad had 11 debutants but defied their lack of experience to take out the Barossa Valley hosted event, which saw the boys competing over four days. The championships consisted of three pool matches, playing 30 overs-a-side before the Stockwell Oval grand final. The opening game of the championships saw the boys take on Fleurieu & District and after an early wicket Blake Vause (25) and Noah Virtanen (25) combined to steady the ship, before another good partnership of 58 between Noah and Ashton Lindner (45) had the South East back on solid ground. Archer Virtanen and Darcy Twigden enjoyed a 33 run-a-ball partnership before some good running between the wicket from Harry Hicks and Nicholas Bald saw the South East to 8/157. Riley Lawrence and Ashton Lindner opened the bowling and thanks to some wonderful line and length bowling both finished with a wicket apiece for very little scoreboard damage. Riley Clarke bowled well taking 2/9 from three overs and the South East had run through the top order of Fleurieu & District to have them 4/27. Some tight bowling from Darcy Twigden, Archer
Virtanen, Harry Hicks and Nicholas Bald turned the screws before Zach Boston and Brayden Pilgrim made breakthroughs before a smart piece of fielding from Harry saw Fleurieu & District dismissed 27 runs shy of their victory target. Murray District was the boys’ second opponent with Riley and Darcy making the critical early breakthroughs with the ball. But needing to find a way to break through Murray District’s to order Black swapped the keeping gloves for the ball and in tandem with Darcy, the spin twins dried up the runs, with Darcy also getting two wickets in two balls but could not find a third for the hat trick. Riley, who went behind the stumps when Blake took the ball, was outstanding with two stumpings and a sharp catch, while Darcy’s 6/12 from six overs from a highlight, as was Blake’s 3/0 from 2.1 overs, as Murray Districts collapsed to all out for 51. Brayden and Noah did the bulk of the damage in the run chase with a 44 run second wicket stand and in the end the South East won by eight wickets. Mid North was South East’s final pool match opponent and some strong hitting at the top of the order from Campbell Hateley got things off to a flier but the Mid North’s State representative leg spinner started to wreak havoc and the boys slumped to 5/37. Blake (22) and Riley Clarke (20) set about rebuilding the innings, seeing off the State player and looking to score at the other end and in the end. The
South East ended up with a modest 9/100. Early wickets were the key for the South East and thanks to some impressive bowling from Darcy and some great fielding from Riley Clarke, who also bowled well, and Archer , Mid North were in early trouble. Some good keeping from Riley Lawrence again proved invaluable and in the end, the Mid North was dismissed for 59 and the South East progressed to play Barossa & Light in the title decider. It was a heat affected finale with the match reduced to 20-a-sde and on winning the toss, skipper Riley Lawrence opted to get runs on the board. Two wickets in the first over was not the ideal start but the skipper and Ashton Lindner steadied the ship in fine style, taking the score from 2/3 to 2/65 from 10 overs. Ashton then scored 21 off the 11th over and went on to make
Anthony Beare and Mark Jennings were competing in the WA Street Stocks State Title. Beare cruised through to the title race with four wins from his four outings over the weekend, while Jennings had a couple of placings and a win, but thanks to a strong drive in the B Main 1, he secured 17th place on the grid for the A Main, with fellow Mount Gambier driver, Beare, on the front row. As Jennings worked his way through the field, Beare was jostling for second at the front of the field, before mechanical issues forced him from the track halfway through the 23rd of 40 laps. With Beare’s night over, Jennings continued his surge and ended up fifth. Bear and Jennings were the only visiting drivers for the WA titles, but with the national street stock titles bound for Bunbury on the Australia Day weekend next year, the boys were keen to scope out the local competition.
BATTING HIGHLIGHT S Ashton Linder 133, Noah Virtanen 56 & Riley Lawrence 51. BOWLING HIGHLIGHTS Darcy Twigden 9 wickets, Blake Vause 6 wickets & Riley Clarke 4 wickets. FIELDING HIGHLIGHTS Riley Lawrence had 3 catches & 4 stumpings, Blake Vause & Archer Virtanen 2 catches.
Basketball returns
Back to back for Gartner Penola’s Steve Gartner claimed back to back South Australian Street Stock Titles in Renmark on the Australia Day weekend, in what was a strong titles for Borderline Speedway locals, with Jason Duell finishing fifth and Jayden Edwards seventh. It was Gartner’s breakthrough victory in last season’s State titles at Whyalla that seemed to kickstart the talented driver’s career and he added the Northern Territory title to the trophy cabinet. The 2019/20 season did not sort with similar highs but a second at the Borderline’s Blue Lake Classic saw Gartner show the form, the industry knows her can produce, and the Renmark victory shows he is definitely back in town. Gartner admitted his form had not been what he hoped but some tweaks to the car had really paid dividends and with plenty of silverware still on offer in street stocks for the remainder of the season, Gartner plans to add to his growing collection. The comfortable nature of his successful title defence in the A Main in his SA # 32 South East Collision Repairs/Merrett Logging supported FG Ford Falcon, beating out a former national titleholder in Rhys Heinrich, who enjoyed the better of the early going, suggests Gartner is ready to pounce on the remaining 2019/20 major events – the NSW Title at Moama’s Heartland Raceway on March 14, the Victorian Title at Hamilton’s Western Speedway on March 27 and 28, and then the National Title at Latrobe Speedway, in Tasmania, on April 9, 10 and 11. On the other side of Australia at Tyrepower Manjimup Speedway in Western Australia,
79 from 55 balls as Riley Lawrence (44) farmed the strike wherever possible and in the end, thanks to some late hitting and good running the South East finished on 6/142. In what could only be described as a team effort, the South east dismissed Barossa & Light 25 runs shy of the victory target.
The Australian Sprintcar Championships were held at the weekend at LaTrobe Speedway in Tasmania with weather wreaking havoc with night one. Warrnambool’s Jamie Veal claimed the crown, while Mount Gambier Steve Lines narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth. Above (main) - Steve Gartner in action. After a lengthy break due to Christmas and New Years the MG Plasterers SECBL competition returnedlast week and there was a lot of first quarter rust amongst some of the teams before players found their groove as the games progressed. Performance of the night went to Bulldogs Red player Duncan Reid who led his side to victory over the Cats in Millicent with a total of 40 points to his name, including four straight threes to start the third quarter.. Reid was unstoppable from all over the court including from beyond the arc where he had five three pointers. Frazer Bradley of the Cats worked hard for his 25 points but it was not enough for his side that went down by three points. The Cougars men had an important win over the Bulldogs Blue team to keep themselves in the play off hunt. Tobi de Wit led all scorers with 26 points, including five three pointers. The top placed Panthers were too good for Roos, Kyle Tipene was too much for Roos to handle with 34 points with support from Kurt Rodis with 20, Roos first gamer Michael Kout impressed with 18 points for the Roos. Tipene was happy to be back and said it felt good to be back on court. “We had a slow start but shook off the holiday rust in the second quarter,” Tipene said. In the women’s competition Cats made light work of the Bulldogs/Roos, with Emily Winter cruising to 19 points to lead all scorers. In a low scoring affair, it was the Panthers defeating Cougars closing the gap on second place, new player Johanna Jones had 26 points in her first game for Panthers, Keryl Ousey worked hard for her 27 points for the Cougars.
LOCAL Passionate Pie training in the Crows’ nest SPORT He might be a passionate Collingwood supporter but 14 year old Lochie Thiele has been spending a lot of time in Crows colours. The South Gambier premiership player is one of a handful of locally grown talent to be called into the Adelaide Crows Academy, an elite pathway program for promising footballers. The first session was held at the end of last year with sessions continuing throughout this year, with mid week training and the opportunity to play curtain raisers to Crows games during the AFL season. “It is definitely step up training at this level,” Lochie said. “We have done a bit of everything from skills like handballing, kicking, tackling and ground balls to meditation and yoga.”
Former Crow Jason Porplyzia heads the coaching staff for the academy, with Jarrod Meers, the Academies Manager at the Crows, also spending a lot of time with the group. Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks and a raft of AFL and AFLW players and coaches work with both the boys and girls academies and Lochie has already had a session with emerging forward Elliott Himmelberg. Having to miss school is not so much a chore, but missing weekend club matches always test regionally based footballers. “It is disappointing to have to miss playing for South for a few games but it is a great opportunity,” Lochie said. He has two chances to be selected for one of the two curtain raiser opportunities – the round 4 clash with Brisbane on April 4 or the April 16 match versus the Bombers.
“It would be a pretty good experience to play on Adelaide Oval on the same day as an AFL game,” Lochie said. And with Glenelg Academy responsibilities locally, with coaches Andrew Nitschke and Kieron Hicks, and a place in the Glenelg Centre of Excellence, it is wall to wall footy for Lochie at the moment and a fair bit of time driving to and from Adelaide and throughout the Limestone Coast. Lifestyle1 will catch up with the other local talent in the Crows Academy in the coming weeks. Last year Brooke Tonon, Mitchell Sims and Jake Walker were part of the elite pathway program. SOUTH EAST CRICKETERS SET TO TAKE ON THE REST OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Boasting a proud history at recent carnival’s the South East’s best cricketers are headed to Adelaide from February 3-6 to contest the Senior Country Cup. North Gambier allrounder Nick McInerney will captain the side, which also includes his Tigers team mates Jake Schutz, Tim Young and Declan Kenny, as well as former North opener, now Adelaide based, Matt McInerney. Drenthen and Adam Somerfield, who suited up for the Maroons this season but is a regular Adelaide District player for Tea Tree Gully, will represent South, while Sam Willis will fly the flag for West Gambier and Mark Smith and Mick Waters, both who have shown strong form in the 2019/20 season for Penola, are also part of the line-up. LOCAL 2019 aggregate winners from South East Field & Game Association SPORT NEW PRESIDENT BRINGS A NEW VISION The Western Border Football League has a new leader with Michael Summers taking the top job after dipping his toes in the water as a debutant board member in 2019. His first order of business has been recruiting a couple ore members to the board – with two new faces hopefully set to be ratified at the upcoming delegates meeting this month. Next will be the season launch at the end of March before the on field action starts in earnest on April 18. Summers brings a wealth of experience to the role, having been at the forefront of baseball administration in this region, as well as spending time at the coalface at the Port MacDonnell Football Club for a number of seasons. With no strong allegiance to any of the six member clubs of the league, Summers brings a fresh set of eyes and is ready to tackle the many and varied challenges the Western Border Football League, and country football and sport, more generally, face. Working more closely with the two neighbouring leagues – Mid South East and Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara – is high on the new president’s agenda in a bid to promote country football broadly by working cooperatively to maximise interest and attendance at all three leagues matches. With a mother who is a life member of the Western Border Netball Association, Summers is also acutely aware of what football’s primary partner, netball, brings to the league and how critical it is, the two continue to find ways of working more closely together moving forward. “Mum (Judy Summers) and Di (Facey) worked so hard to start up the Western Border Netball Association and it is a vital part of what we do as a football league,” he said. He is also still committed to looking at adding clubs to the six club competition but admits it will be hard going, especially luring clubs based in Victoria. “We were happy with the 2019 season and grand final day but we have to keep working hard and building on that and finding new and better ways to do things,” Summers said.

Deja vu for South East bowlers For the second successive year, South East bowlers Heather Richards (Port MacDonnell) and Bordertown’s Di Murch have finished third at the annual Warrnambool Australia Day Ladies Prestige Pairs hosted by the Warrnambool Bowls Club. The weather conditions were not very favourable over the three days with strong winds and rain. Overall winners were Marita Roberts and Veronica Kelly, from Geelong, with 5 wins, while second place went to the Noronha twins, Sam and Natalie, from Engadine, in New South Wales also with 5 wins. Richards and Di Murch secured four wins to earn third placing. Right - Di Murch & Heather Richards

LOCAL Lakers rise to the challenge SPORT National call up for young Laker
Cara Nulty has capped off a strong year on the basketball court with selection in an Australian team set to compete at the Mel Young Classic, a prestigious junior basketball event in New Zealand over Easter. Cara is one of four SA Country players to make the cut, with the rest of the team coming from Victorian and New South Wales Country players. The 12 year old Tenison Woods College student has been representing Mount Gambier through the Lakers program for four years and debuted for SA Country as part of the State under age basketball program in 2019, although she did serve an apprenticeship in an Under 13 development team the season prior. With her older siblings all having their own impressive junior basketball careers it was inevitable the talented young athlete would pick up a basketball. “She picked up a basketball very early,” mother Deana said. “She has been out at the stadium her whole life.” Playing as a tall guard or a four, Cara has worked to develop an overall game where she can attack t5he basket, do damage from the three point line and also play solid defence. The team was picked based on performance at last month’s Australian Country Cup in Albury. Between now and Easter, though, it will be wall to wall basketball for Cara, with more junior tournaments for the Lakers. The Australian team will arrive in New Zealand a day before the tournament for their only training as a group. The Mel Young Classic runs from April 13-18.
TENNIS, SOFTBALL & BASEBALL WERE ALL CANCELLED DUE TO THE WEEKEND’S INCLEMENT WEATHER
Three Mount Gambier Lakers have recently returned home from the Southern Cross Challenge, held last month at Melbourne’s State Basketball Centre, with championship winning Pioneer Kurt Russell also at the event in a coaching capacity for SA Country. Harry Wright, Mackye Baron and Paige Exelby all represented SA Country in Under 15 pitting their skills against some of the most talented young athletes from all over Australia compete and is a great opportunity for the players to test their skills against the best of their age group. Mackye and Harry (pictured) played for the SA Country Sharks, who started the tournament with a tough introduction to high level basketball with a game against Vic Metro. Mackye enjoyed his experience away and the opportunity to play against some of the best. “The toughest teams were the Vic Metro and Vic Country teams,” Mackye said. “Their players were great all round players and the Vic sides had really good chemistry.” The two boys helped their team to two wins from seven games including a win over State rival SA Metro. Paige Exelby, who recently moved to Adelaide with her family, was part of the SA Country Magpies
side who although had a tough tournament based enjoyed he chance to test and improve their skills against strong opposition. Russell coached the SA Country Magpies U15 boys’ side and gained a lot from his experience. “It was a fantastic opportunity, from where the side was at the start of the tournament to the finish showed great improvement, I was really happy with the group,” Russell said. “I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it was great to get back into coaching, I see it as a great pathway for myself.” Mackye, Harry and Paige were part of a Lakers contingent of teams that competed on the Australia Day weekend at the Bendigo Junior Tournament.
