Australia Day awards were a family affair “I am truly humbled and quite emotional to share this special moment with my husband Damian and children Caitlin and Joseph. As parents we are proud in knowing we have raised our children to have a humanitarian approach to life and understand the value of helping and giving to others.” Those were the tearful words of Mount Gambier Citizen of the Year Lorenza McMahon as she accepted her honour at the official presentation at the city’s breakfast celebration in the Cave Gardens. It was an honour she accepted alongside daughter Caitlin who was the Young Citizen of the Year, not only for Mount Gambier but on the state stage, being named South Australian Young Citizen of the Year as well. “I am both humbled and honoured to receive this award today,” Caitlin said. “My passion for helping others and giving back to the community stems from my supportive family and friends. Mount Gambier has provided me with the opportunity to pursue my passion of helping others. Volunteering, however small, plays a huge part in buildings communities.” And to keep the family theme running, Joseph was winner of the Mount Gambier Young Citizen of the Year last year. Caitlin has served the community through five years of volunteering with the Sunset Community Kitchen and 18 months as a St John Limestone Coast member serving as an event

Happy Birthday

30th anniversary celebrations for country music association The South East Country Music Association is celebrating its 30th birthday on Sunday, February 2, at its usual Sunday afternoon session. The session runs from 1-5pm and features Henry Czerwonka and Friends Band with a raft of high profile guest artists including Kevin Sporer, Sandra Humphries, Bones Hill, Barry Case and Mel Weistra. There will be raffles, a lucky door prize and afternoon tea and the association is hoping past, present and new members will attend. Contact Ros on 0435 608 680 for more details.

medic, along with commitment to various local sporting clubs and school based leadership roles. Caitlin was recognised for her considerable contributions in October 2019 when she was invited to Government House and presented an Order of Australia Association SA Branch Student Citizenship Award by the Governor of South Australia, the Honourable Hieu Van Le. The Young Citizen of the Year also dedicates her time to volunteering at the Mount Gambier Hospital where she enjoys visiting patients to offer them company and someone to talk to. Caitlin also served the community through her role as school captain. In this role she assisted with the ‘Do it for Dolly Day’ held in May 2019 and coordinated initiatives to facilitate a collaboration between Grant High School and the recently founded local organisation ‘Spare Ya Change 4 Kids’. And her mother Lorenza’s community service resume it equally impressive. Dedicating many hours each week to St John and the Sunset Community Kitchen, Lorenza’s selfless nature is demonstrated by a long list of service to her community over many years. Joining St John in 2013, Lorenza has completed a Certificate Three in Basic Health and six years later continues to volunteer as an event medic and teaches junior cadets. Lorenza’s involvement with the Sunset Community Kitchen began in 2009 when a committee was first established to get the concept off the ground. More than 10 years later her contribution to this community initiative continues 2with Lorenza serving as a team leader preparing and serving meals at the Sunset Community Kitchen on Monday and Wednesday evenings and collecting food donations from local businesses each week. With previous experience as a Lifeline counsellor and SES volunteer, Lorenza and her family also support Red Cross and UNICEF and have been heavily involved in a number of local sporting clubs through both her own involvement and that of her children and husband. “I thank my parents for their guidance and in passing on this legacy,” Lorenza said. “Over the years I have had the privilege of

working with many exceptional and outstanding individuals and community organisations. They have been valuable role models and mentors in developing my passion to help others. Volunteering and helping unites communities. For me it has been a rewarding, fun and empowering journey. It gives you a great sense of achievement and a new level o confidence while helping others. I feel proud to be part of the Mount Gambier community and I look forward to continuing to volunteers to help make a difference.” Lioness Janet Bellinger was named the Senior Citizen of the Year as she celebrates 20 years with the Lionesses this March. Janet, who began volunteering as a 14 year old, was recently awarded the James D Richardson Honour Award, one of the highest accolades presented to Lions and Lioness members in Australia. Throughout her almost 20 years of service, Janet has made significant contribution to the Lioness Club and the community and has held a number of roles in that time. Through the Lioness Club Janet also assists with the Library Books in Home program, Sunset Community Kitchen and Foodbank and has volunteered her time and expertise to assist in the planning and running of many community events. Janet also served on the Lions District Cabinet for four years as a Lioness Liason. “I enjoy the company of the other ladies, we work together, it’s a really fun group to be with and I really enjoy the volunteer work and giving back,” Mrs Bellinger said. Born in Millicent and with a love of all things Scottish, Janet has volunteered her time to a number of causes around the Limestone Coast through pipebands, highland dancing and debutant balls. She has been been playing in pipebands for 60 years, having started with the Millicent Caledonian Pipe Band at the age of 15, and now volunteers her time tutoring the Penola Pipe Band, where she is a life member. Janet is also a life member of the Millicent Caledonian Society, where she was the first lady chief in Australia. “Volunteering brings a feeling of wellbeing, it’s just something I can do and I enjoy doing it and the people I do it with,” Janet said. “There is a lot of work that goes into but it brings a great deal of satisfaction, you forget you did all that, as the years pass you just do it.” The Community Event of the Year went to BrickGambier - Lego fan event that has gone from strength to strength in its short three year history. Motivated by similar events on a larger scale around Australian cities and across Europe, LEGO fans Emma Robinson, Alison Boomsma and Hannah Robinson along with a small committee created the BrickGambier event in 2017. The two-day event held over the October long weekend brings together LEGO fans from around lifestyle1.net | 04

Australia to showcase their LEGO exhibits for the community to view. The organising committee attributed the success of the 2019 event in part to the Channel 9 TV show LEGO Masters that first aired in Australia in April 2019. The event was the catalyst for Limestone Coast LEGO User Group formed in March 2018 that meets monthly and has a social media and web presence. The event raised $3000 for Wet Noses Animal Rescue who provided volunteers to assist with the event.” “We are really grateful for our exhibitors who not only travel and exhibit for free but also donate LEGO to be auctioned off to raise money for Wet Noses – all for the love of LEGO,” Emma said. We are thrilled to win the Community Event of the Year Award and thank the community for supporting the event and especially our sponsors and exhibitors who make it all possible”. ROD VERSTEEGH Axis Employment manager

Where do you never tire of visiting in this region? Robe & my couch Three first choice dinner party guests Ricky Gervais (so the dinner will be politically incorrect); Scarlett Johansson (because she’s been begging me for years) & Superman (because we’ve never been seen in the same room). What people would be surprised to find out about you? I’m very shy. Your greatest weakness? Running up a hill without sounding like Darth Vader. Your greatest strength? Pretty good at chasing targets & goals What would you choose for your last meal? A good steak from Hog’s Breath. What item in your wardrobe would you never part with? Sunglasses. If you were a car, what would you be? Convertible on the open road. Who/what most inspires you? Anyone that has drive & passion. Who/what most frustrates/annoys you? Anyone who doesn’t know the difference between there, their & they’re. What book/CD would you want with you if you were on a deserted island? Any book about how to use palm trees to make a boat. Which movie/television role would you love to play? Doctor Who. What’s the best advice you ever heard? If you believe it, you can achieve it. What’s the best advice you ever gave? Back yourself in 100 per cent. If you weren’t in your current role what would you be doing? I’d be a politician. Who would you like to swap places with for a day? The Crows coach just to get the team up & running for 2020..

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but things are different to what they used to be. One of my best opening sentences ever, I’m sure you’d agree. You may not have noticed but I have. Things have changed. I’ll be honest, I prefer a lot of the old things. I went to a local fast food restaurant recently with a group of friends. It’s a bit scary how many of my articles involve me going to a fast food restaurant. If someone is bored, they might like to research whether the percentage of my articles about going to fast food restaurants is equivalent to the percentage of meals I eat from fast food restaurants. Going back to the fast food joint, I patiently lined up behind about fifteen other people and waited for my turn to order. While waiting, I noticed one of my younger colleagues, who had entered the establishment behind me, go and stand next to the counter

where the food was to be collected from. “That’s a bit unusual,” I thought. “Maybe he’s not hungry?” He didn’t seem that interested in food really. He was staring intently at his mobile phone while he stood there. But sure enough, shortly after, he did in fact receive a meal and wandered off to enjoy his lunch. Meanwhile there were still twelve people in the line ahead of me. About ten minutes later I made it to the table to eat my lunch. “How did that happen? I politely inquired. Many of you may already have worked out what had transpired, but I needed it explained. My colleague had an app on his phone that allowed him to order his meal, without needing to wait in the line, speak to a pimply faced teenager, swipe a card or heaven forbid even get actual cash money from his wallet. As if that’s not enough, he hadn’t even punched his card details into the phone to make payment; he had used facial recognition! After making his instantaneous online purchase and payment, whilst waiting for his order, he told me he’d watched a little bit of his favourite sport on Kayo, cued up a movie he was going to watch later on Netflix, and adjusted his Spotify playlist. All while I stood in line. Is that rude or what? I know there’s technology involved, but that’s pushing in to the front of the queue. Another human being who had waited there patiently for their turn had to wait a little longer for their meal,

because fast food restaurants are trying to get rid of counter staff. We don’t really think about it because there’s an app involved, but if I had walked into the store, walked past other customers to the front of line and then started ordering my meal, that would have been frowned upon. I really don’t think the app makes this any different. We as a society are now actively encouraging people not to wait their turn. That’s a pretty important life skill that we teach kids from about when they start talking. After thousands of years of civilisation, it apparently doesn’t matter anymore. There’s something character building about waiting your turn. It

teaches you patience. Respect for others. Social skills, learning about what is acceptable (or unacceptable) personal space. If nothing else, you get a chance to have a good look at the menu board. Maybe there’s a new option that you’d never noticed previously. After making some ignorant and probably unfair comments about Anthony Albanese recently, I’d like to make it clear that I will happily vote for any party who makes these online ordering apps illegal. Wait your turn sunshine. If you’re feeling a bit hungry now, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

Council’s free Australia Day Celebration was hosted by the Kongorong Progress Advisory Committee who graciously donated all proceeds contributed by the public for the BBQ lunch, along with money collected on the day to the SA CFS Foundation and the Stand Like Stone South East Disaster Relief Fund. Mayor Richard Sage acknowledged personnel of the hard working emergency services including the C.F.S., S.E.S., M.F.S., S.A. Police, St John Ambulance, S.A. Simon Fisher (pictured) has recently completed a Squashbrook 8 Week Transformation Challenge and proudly lost 11.1kg fat and added 2kg muscle. “After a couple of severe health scares, it wasn’t until I realised the impact my unhealthy lifestyle was having on my young family that I made the decision to join the challenge. I couldn’t fault the team at Squashbrook, Simon, Craig and all the trainers were supportive, informative and caring the whole way through. The challenge really guided me, but more importantly kept me accountable. It set me up to continue now after the challenge to strive and push myself past what I though I could achieve. If you’re even half considering doing the challenge all I can say is....do it!!!!” Give youself a new lease on life by registering for the next 8 Week Transformation Challenge which kicks off on February 8.

Naracoorte Lucindale Council celebrates award winners in style

January 30 1948 – Mahatma Gandhi (pictured) is assassinated by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu extremist. 1965 State Funeral of Winston Churchill at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Then world’s largest ever state funeral. Joining with the rest of the nation, Naracoorte Lucindale Council celelbrated its brightest and best with the handing out of Australia Day awards at Sunday’s celebrations. Naracootrte Lucindale Mayor Etika Vickery said the Citizen of the Year awards reward and recognise individuals and organisations that have made a noteworthy contribution during 2019, and/or given outstanding service over a number of years, to a local community over and above normal employment duties. “There were many good nominations received and choosing the recipients

was difficult. I’d like to congratulate Judy Stafford, Leanne Graetz, Lucindale Lions Club and Soroptimist International Naracoorte on their awards,” Mayor Vickery said. Naracoorte Citizen of the Year Judy Stafford is a quiet achiever for the Naracoorte community who is an active and valued member of Rotary, the National Trust and Uniting Church. She has served as President of Rotary and Chairman, Secretary and Publicity Officer for the National Trust as well as the branch’s historian and archivist. Lucindale Citizen of the Year Leanne

Graetz has lived her whole life in Lucindale and been heavily involved in sporting and community groups, including netball, tennis, golf and LINC. She has held numerous roles within these groups over the years, has a passionate sense of community and never misses an opportunity to promote Lucindale. Lucindale was one of the smallest towns to host the triple j One Night Stand last September, which attracted around 20,000 visitors and national media coverage. It was estimated the event brought in $15million to the region. A campaign to bring the event to Lucindale began in 2013. The Naracoorte Community Event of the Year was the International Women’s Day Breakfast hosted by Soroptimist International Naracoorte. The day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world. Last year’s local breakfast was a sold-out event. “The Citizen of the Year awards are determined as a result of nominations from the community,” Mayor Vickery said. “I’d like to thank everyone who completed nomination forms and encourage people to renominate next year. We know that there are many people who contribute. It was

disappointing to have no nominations for the Naracoorte Young Citizen of the Year or the Lucindale Young Citizen of the Year and I hope this changes next year.” Naracoorte Lucindale Council celebrated Australia Day with a breakfast in Narcoorte and a community lunch in Lucindale. The Australia Day address at both Naracoorte and Lucindale this year were given by renowned research scientist Monica Oliphant AO, who was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2015 for her services to renewable energy research. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of South Australia and was named Senior South Australian of the Year in 2016.

STREAMLINE YOUR NEXT MOVE Packing and purging are two different tasks. Trying to clear out during the packing process is way too much work in a short time span. Start the editing process at least two months before you move. Take on one room at a time and decide what gets thrown out, recycled or donated. That way, when it’s time to pack, you’ll have less to handle.

Sienna, Natalie, Fernley, Nevae & Esha The Mount Gambier Library was a sea of children’s literary characters last Thursday as the Summer Reading Challenge enjoyed its funfilled finale. Of the 180 children who registered for the event, now in its third year, more than 100 children, parents and carers dressed as their favourite characters and took part in a morning celebration of the program, that included a raft of activities. The program runs for two months, encouraging children to committing to reading every day of their summer school holidays. “Research shows that reading outcomes drop dramatically during the summer holiday break when

Kobi, Kloe, Kori, Fiona & Kasi

Esther & Bob the kids are not in school and we wanted to motivate them through this community space to want to read,” Mount Gambier Library children’s services development coordinator Kelly Lynch said. Each year the library develops the program to continue to attract more kids to develop their reading skills and a love of books. “The more you understand the program the more you can deep dive into it and get a bit more out of it,” Ms Lynch said. With 2019 being the Year of Indigenous Languages, the library’s summer reading program, as well as other holiday activities, focussed on exposing kids to indigenous culture,

Eli & Bobby

Phoebe & Clare language and stories. In fact, last Thursday’s program final kickstarted with a traditional smoking ceremony and some of the activities on offer revolved around indigenous language and story telling. “We have had great support from the Burrandies Aboriginal Corporation, coming in on a volunteer basis,” Ms Lynch said. The Summer Reading Club has enjoyed increased interest every year and 2019/20 was no different. “We are tying to build a community so every year when it comes around people are already engaged,” Ms Lynch said. “We find interest in the club is activated for younger siblings and so each year it grows.” New for this year’s Summer

Charlie & Kiahna

Mia & Malekai Reading Club was the children all signing pledges which they took home and stuck to their fridge, with their own personal commitment to reading every day. “We wanted it to be about their voice, running their own reading and not doing it because someone else told them to,” Ms Lynch said. And it was a pledge the kids took seriously. Three year old Fernley said she read every day and nine year old Sienna, seven year old Natalie, 11 year old Nevae and nine year old Esha all basically lost count of how many books they got through but it was basically somewhere in the 15-20 bracket, which is exactly the kind of reading engagement the Summer

Foundation welcomes new leader This year brings new beginnings for the Stand Like Stone Foundation with the appointment of Anne Kerr as chief executive officer who offically started in the role this Thursday. With a background in law and 17 years in various leadership roles in the timber industry, Anne will bring her extensive experience in strategic planning, governance and corporate affairs to StandLike Stone. As a Limestone Coast local Anne has admired Stand Like Stone’s work for many years, more recently establishing a closer connection through the OneFortyOne Community Capacity Building Grants Program.

This program, a partnership between Stand Like Stone and OneFortyOne, has seen $180,000 in grants through the foundation to the Limestone Coast community. “I am thrilled to have been given the honour of leading Stand Like Stone and to continue building on the foundation’s success,” Ms Kerr said. “I am really looking forward to working with the team and our community partners to deliver the board’s important vision of making a positive and meaningful impact to the people and communities in the Limestone Coast.” Anne replaces Georgie McKay

who headed up Stand Like Stone for almost eight years. Georgie’s leadership has seen the foundation grow from the corpus of $750,000 thousand with grants of $50,000 per annum, to a corpus of over $4.6 million and grants of $250,000 annually. “The Board welcomes Anne Kerr as the new chief executive officer of Stand Like Stone and we are confident that she will bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm and a new outlook for the foundation, which is both positive and exciting for the foundation and the region”, said foundation chair Bill DeGaris.“The board would lifestyle1.net | 24

Book Club is looking to generate. The sky is the limit in terms of what the children read and then each time they finish a book, they bring their bookmark into the library to be part of a lucky dip. “We find that’s a way of engaging them, of starting to feel comfortable in the library and making it a part of their lives and often we find they take the opportunity to get more books,” Ms Lynch said. The library also had a Golden Book that was hidden in the library and any child who found it received a lollipop. “Again, it’s about making the library a fun place to be – we want them to see it as their library.”

City of Mount Gambier community and stakeholder engagement officer Ben Kilsby arguably summed it up best – “the Mount Gambier and District Tertiary Health Education Grants Program plays an important role in fostering health professionals from this region.” Now in its 14th year, the 2020 grants program was officially launched last week with long standing Ken Stafford on hand to again spruik the benefits of the scheme that has assisted 142 students to the tune of $284,000 prior to the announcement of the 2020 recipients. “This has only been made possible by the generous financial support of the City of Mount Gambier, District Council of Grant, the Mount Gambier & District Community Bank, UFS Chemist, Flinders Rural Health

SA and the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes,” Mr Stafford said. John and Helen Kentish and Ken and Carol Stafford have also been long standing contributors to the program, which supports residents from Mount Gambier and the surrounding district through the provision of a $2000 grant to help complete their tertiary studies within the health field in areas where there is an identified skill shortage locally. “ Although we know some grant recipients may be unable to return to the region, where possible we hope they do so following their graduation to boost the number of health professionals in the Limestone Coast,” Mr Stafford said. And pleasingly for Mr Stafford this year was the fact he could introduce Chloe Slarks to the launch attendees, a 2011 recipient who has returned to the region to work as a paramedic with SA Ambulance. “We finally got one back,” Mr Stafford said. And he can make that two with Amelia Hancock, one of two former recipients who spoke at the launch about the value of the program, having also returned, starting work last week as a pharmacist at UFS Chemist. “After completing my studies and internship in Adelaide this grant has allowed me to follow my dream to move back to Mount Gambier with a full-time job as a pharmacist at UFS Chemist,” Amelia, who was a recipient of the grant in 2015, said. Cody Lewis, who received her grant last year, was the other guest speaker at the launch and there was no denying how grateful she for the financial support as she embarked on her double degree of a Bachelor

of Exercise Science and Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology at Flinders University, in Adelaide. With five years of study ahead of her, Cody was keen on not taking a gap year but was all too aware of the extra financial burden that would put on her family. “It was such important assistance for me to successfully move away and start my study,” Cody said. City of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin OAM said the highly competitive nature of the health sector when it comes to recruitment and retention of skilled workers made the grants program critical. “It is a unique and important collaboration between the City of Mount Gambier, District Council of Grant, local health providers, the private sector and individuals that come together,” she said. District Council of Grant Mayor Richard Sage said the importance of the program had been his council double its contribution as of 2019. “To relieve financial pressures while students are transitioning into university life is so important,” he said. Applications are now open and students required to leave the region to undertake university studies in areas of health are encouraged to apply. After offering 10 grants in 2019, there are 12 grants on offer for the 2020 program, which over its history has funded students in five different universities across South Australia, Victoria and Queensland. Grants can be used for a broad range of student needs including university fees, medical uniforms, equipment, books, travel and living expenses. View the eligibility criteria and download an application form at www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au/THEG Applications close on Tuesday, March 31. WINDFALL FOR FRINGE PROJECT

Member for Barker Tony Pasin MP has welcomed $15,000 funding for the Mount Gambier Fringe project, Experience Fringe, an interactive community event involving three regional artists across three different art forms, engaging audiences in large scale arts experiences. Mr Pasin said this was one of 20 regional arts projects across the country sharing in more than $550,000 in Federal Government funding in the latest round of the Festivals Australia program. “Festivals reflect the shared culture and experience of a community, and art is an important component of that. The Mount Gambier Fringe is not only a brilliant event for the local community but is also a drawcard for visitors bringing with them economic benefits for the Limestone Coast tourism industry,” said Mr Pasin. “Support provided by the Australian Government through programs such as Festivals Australia recognises the integral role of arts activities at regional festivals and provides the opportunity for regional artists to collaborate across the sector. It’s great for the sector and great for the community.” lifestyle1.net | 25

Rymill Hall upgrade underway

Works commenced on a project to upgrade Rymill Hall in Penola last week. The project is one of a number of major capital upgrade projects in Wattle Range Council’s 2019/20 budget and involves the construction of disabled toilet and baby change facilities and disability access to the hall, as well as some fire safety upgrades, a new building entrance plus a full external repaint. “Rymill Hall is a significant community facility that does not comply with current standards,” council’s acting director engineering services, Lauren Oxlade said. “The plans for the new disabled toilet facilities, disability access into and throughout the hall and fire safety upgrades have been designed to bring the building into line with current legislation. As the works are quite extensive the hall will need to be closed to the public for the duration of the project. It is expected that the works should be completed mid-March, at which time we will be able to re-open the hall to the public.” Council thanks the community for their patience during this time and invite anyone with questions to see council’s website for information or contact the office on (08)8733 0901. Happy New Year... and hasn’t it been an interesting one so far? The cool weather has been great for gardening recently and has given us plenty of opportunity to get outside and do some outdoor entertaining in between those horrendous few spikes in the weather where all gardens around the region were frazzled in the hot winds despite how much you watered.. So, too, have we been given the opportunity to look around the garden and see where we can add some much needed shade from that harsh summer sun we have been having and, even after the blast of heat here and there, and that wonderful rain, it has certainly restored the planting spirit. We have been rushed off our feet since reopening after Christmas I put it down to us really having the spring we never had and all running around madly for Christmas and not getting time to do things around the home and then when January comes you can breathe a sigh of relief and start looking at your outdoor areas and garden. New seasons ornamental, fruit and nut trees are now ready for sale and with our current orchard starter now is a good time to plant. We always used to think to winter to plant trees, especially deciduous trees, but that’s very old school, and the opportunity is not there to see exactly what part of the garden and home requires shading. I know I have just contemplated planting some more trees on the west side to cut the summer sun on the windows and help cool the rooms on that side. Trees have an amazing ability to be our own air conditioning and studies have shown the cooling effects of lawns and plants in so many ways and trees are amazing at reducing the temperatures and cutting out the harsh rays of the sun. Now is a good time to have a look around and even plant a mature or advanced shade tree. These come in many forms from evergreen, giving all year round shading, to deciduous, where the leaves will drop in winter to give added light. Deciduous trees again, come in many forms, from mop tops, where the size is governed by the grafting and variety, so are good for courtyard shade and smaller spaces right throughout, to lightly foliaged trees, such as silver birch, then to larger, heavily foliaged shade trees such as maples and planes that can give fantastic shading to large and small areas. We currently grow more than 30 varieties of mop top trees at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees. Most of these are in our current sale that is running NOW. Remember, too, that many of the older varieties of larger trees you may have been used to are now available in (dwarf) smaller or narrower versions, allowing you to have your old favourites in smaller situations. Last winter we launched lifestyle1.net | 26

By Calum Haygarth Landscape Architect & Horticultural Consultant our new mini ornamental pear that is shorter in height than the normal Capital, also narrower too, if you would like some of these we still have limited stocks. Limestone Coast Advanced Trees is the home of the Wintergreen ornamental pear, an exclusive ornamental pear that holds its leaves year round and is a welcome addition to your garden if you love the characteristics of the deciduous ornamental pears but prefer something evergreen. Shade trees, hedges and especially fruit trees have been selling well since Christmas and now is a good time to plant as there is the whole growing season ahead of us. Look out for our 2020 release fruit trees and we have an orchard starter special on with any four advanced fruit trees for $145 on our coupon offer (see facing page). Many of our advanced and semi mature trees have been slashed to half price to make room for more stock coming through. These include Silver Birch, Elms, Liquidambars, Ash and even half price mop top trees. If you are looking to plant a driveway or avenue of trees we have clearance on ornamental pears, in both the narrow, upright forms as well as more spreading varieties. So, if you are looking for a bargain and some instant sized trees, now is the time to get in as they are selling fast and we have limited numbers of one metre high plus Pittosporum Silver Sheens for just $19.95, but be quick as the sale has been on for a week now. Citrus, avocadoes, (inc. dwarf) and even berry fruits, including the two new release Australian grown blueberry that has fruit the size of a $1 coin, and fruits for nine months of the year, can be planted now for crops in late summer and autumn. We have 50% off selected advanced fruit trees already in fruit for that “instant orchard” and more than $35 off miniature peaches and nectarines, in both yellow and white flesh varieties and $15 semi mature fruit trees in full fruit. Dwarf fruit trees have been very sought after for their compact growth but abundance of fruit are now reduced to clear, not many people realise that these new breeds of dwarf tree produce as much fruit as a full sized tree but can be netted more easily and pruned from the ground. All are ideal for pots. All wall art, giftware, ornaments, statues in our gift shop are up to 70% off, and just been added to the

sale. The mighty strength of the Australian dollar when we purchased has allowed us to sell pots cheaper than five years ago and our outdoor furniture ranges are around $1000 less than last year. All concrete statues, ornaments and birdbaths, giftware and wall art are reduced to clear (see facing page) prices, this includes our driftwood from the Philippines and metal oil drum animals, eskies etc. All concrete ware/lightweight concrete ware, including troughs, large square and round tubs, are included, these are ideal for miniature fruit trees and dwarf citrus varieties, as they can last their entire life without transplanting, especially important with citrus trees, who resent root disturbance and we have minimum 25% off citrus, including double grafted citrus. Gardenarium and The Pot Shop also carries a wide range of solid teak garden furniture which has in the past been out of most people’s price range. With our direct importing we have brought prices right back to less than the flurry of Asian hardwoods that you see looking good in the showroom one minute and warping, cracking and splitting the next. Cast aluminium, which is corrosion free and lightweight, is great for chairs, especially with older people. These are also ideally suited to coastal areas. Our tiled top tables, solid sandstone tiled top tables, pale travertine topped and new for this year is our ceramic table which has been a huge hit, and being natural timber colouring in browns and greys as well which will match in with many colour schemes. We still have one eight seater square table and a few rectangular tables in the Roman range to clear all at fantastic prices, with the three metre long banquet table seating 12-14 people, a serious entertainers table, (see website for details) in both stone and aluminium. Grab your truck, trailer or ute and head in to Gardenarium & Limestone Coast Advanced Trees now and bag a bargain.

Chrissy has rebooted materials collected throughout the year in her own quirky and unique style. Glenys has created exquisite pieces of eco dyed silks along with her expert spinning and weaving skills.

Exciting 2020 ahead for senior citizens club “We get together and have a good old chat.” That’s what Mount Gambier Senior Citizens Club president Peter Ploenges said to sum up the key focus of the James Street based club. Indoor bowls, cards and field trips are the activities on offer for the current membership of around 80.

Indoor bowls is played Monday, Wednesday and Saturday afternoons with a 1.30pm start for play, with a Saturday evening session from 7pm as well. The two card groups meet on Thursdays from 1pm and Fridays from 12noon. The club also heads on a couple of day trips during the year, with Hamilton, Naracoorte and Portland all popular destinations, and with only $15 for membership, it is great value. Next month, there will be a first for the club, hosting a visit from the Hume Sri Lankan Seniors Association, on February 8 and 9. “We have never done anything like this before but it might be the start of doing more interclub activities,” Mr Ploenges said. The two clubs kickstarted a relationship through facebook and the visiting group is set to arrive late Saturday and will be treated to a barbeque at the Mount Gambier headquarters on Saturday night before backing up for a farewell breakfast on Sunday morning. “Some of Mount Gambier’s Sri Lankan community will be coming to the barbeque and we are just looking forward to having a chance to chat to the Melbourne visitors,” Mr Ploenges said. And for a club that was not that long ago facing eviction from its 42 James Street home, last week made for exciting times for the club with

have a new reception area and office and then our old office will be made into a meeting and entertainment room.” Given the facility caters for around 250 people in total, playing host to the University of the Third Age (U3A), Seishikan Karate, Floral Art Club and a bingo group, the renovations are much needed and while the entire project will take 12 months, the reception area should be completed within a fortnight. The renovations and the recent five year lease agreement makes for a promising future for the group. Anyone interested in joining the Senior Citizens Club should just pop into the James Street building when any of the activities are on. Far left - Katie Vossen & Valerio Alma are regulars at the indoor bowls sessions at the Mount Gambier Senior Citizens Club. Wattle Range celebrates Australia Day at five locations From the archives

2020 Australia Day Award winners Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll was on hand to present the Corcoran Ward awards at Wattle Range Council’s 2020 Australia Day Celebrations. The Millicent celebrations were one of four breakfast events held across the Wattle Range district with celebrations in Penola, Beachport and Kalangadoo. And in a first for Wattle Range, a 2pm celehbration was also held at Southend at the western beach. Wattle Range councillors were

in attendance at each breakfast function to hand out the Austalia Day awards. “The awards acknowledge the contribution and service provided to the community by these hardworking individuals and groups,” Mayor Noll said. “As always, I am impressed with the calibre of this year’s nominations. Each of the 2020 award winners has made a valuable contribution to the Wattle Range community and are worthy of such recognition.”

Check out next week’s Lifestyle1 for a full wrap on the award winners in the four wards of the Wattle Range Council. 60 years of volunteering recognised For the past 60 years Keith Millard has been quietly contributing to the local Merino-Digby community getting his hands dirty doing the big jobs during times of need or running a sausage sizzle with the Lions Club to help a community group. His generous spirit was recognised on Sunday as he was named Glenelg Shire Council’s Citizen of the Year at shire-wide Australia Day celebrations in Portland, Heywood and Casterton. Recognising Mr Millard’s achievements, Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the “respected leader” was the lifeblood of the local Merino-Digby community.“Keith is a quiet achiever, described as humble with a generous spirit who has been volunteering in the community since the day he left school,” Cr Rank said. “He is always there to lend a hand whether it be with a chainsaw, donating machinery, gravel, sand, top soil at not cost to clubs and churches, always without hesitation. He is a life member of the Glenorchy CFA and has been three times captain over the past 50 years. This commitment extends to the Merino P and A Society where he volunteered for over 50 years, he was on the Anglican Church parish council for 40 years, and has been a Digby-Merino Lions Club member for 21 years, acting mostly as activity chairman and past chairman three times. Keith can also be seen maintaining the grounds of the Merino Cemetery where is trust chairman and been a member for 15 years. Collectively he has been working for his community for 146 years if you

collate all of the years of services he has given to his town. It is people like Mr Millard who make Glenelg Shire such a wonderful place to live and we thank him for his tireless contribution.” Mr Millard was joined in the award honours by fellow recipients Cheryl Ford (Senior Citizen of the Year); Maycie-Lee Reeves (Young Citizen of the Year) and Community Group of the Year, Mission to Seafarers (Flying Angel Portland). Senior Citizen of the Year Cheryl Ford (pictured above) has been volunteering in the Portland community for more than six decades spreading her time over humanitarian and social efforts, plus church, sporting, and education pursuits. She currently donates her time to Portland Netball Association as president and secretary, Portland U3A as treasurer, No Interest Loan

Scheme committee member and interviewer, L2P driving mentor, PAC volunteer, in addition to Portland South School breakfast club and reading coordinator. Young Citizen of the Year Maycie Lee Reeves (pictured right), aged 19, is a passionate disability advocate and in 2016 successfully started a petition for an All Abilities and equal access playgroup for the Portland foreshore, which is due to open to the public next month after capturing almost 4000 signatures. Maycee-Lee also successfully campaign for an access hoist at the Portland Swimming Pool in 2019 and participated in the opening of the wheelchair carousel at the Heywood playground with the Variety Club in 2017. Her dedication to All Abilities Advocacy has assisted in providing more opportunities for people with disabilities and their families or carers to participate in activities and facilitate social inclusion of people with disabilities. Community Group of the Year, the Mission to Seafarers, also known as Flying Angel Portland, has provided a service to seafarers visiting the Port of Portland for more than 50 years. These dedicated volunteers support up to 8000 seafarers who stop in Portland annually for up to one week. This community group is open every day of the year and supports the welfare of seafarers under the Maritime Convention Bill of Rights. Doctors, medical, repatriation, wages and work-health. The organisation makes more than 5000 bus trips annually, run by 20 dedicated volunteers and a part lifestyle1.net | 29

time manager. They are a not for profit organisation & receive no government or other funding. The group also supports three smaller seafarers centres including Hastings, Port Giles and Port Latta. They also make very generous donations to Portland Coast Guard, Funky Hearts, Portland Surf Lifesaving Club, Portland Citizens Brass Band, TS Henty Australian Navy Cadets, The Bert Tober Medical Trust, the Portland food share & the UpWelling Festival (Blessing of the fleet). Cr Rank said the contribution of each of the award recipients was impressive. “We are proud to present these Awards, as they acknowledge individuals who are outstanding role models who have made a positive difference in our communities,” Cr Rank said “These Australia Day Awards are unique in that it gives every person the opportunity to nominate a fellow citizen who has made an outstanding contribution to their community and I think we can all be proud of these outstanding individuals. I strongly encouraging people to consider making a nomination for the 2021 Australia Day Awards which open next week.” To learn more about how to nominate visit Your Say Glenelg.

Today I became redundant. This morning Mr Five Year Old became a man and walked himself from the car to his classroom. And I’m more than a little distraught. The worst thing is, I’ve been encouraging him to take the initiative for the past month, and now that it’s happened, I’m not happy. Take me back to those days of scouring for a park, walking alone to the classroom as Mr Five Year Old streaked off, standing outside with the thousands of children (well, that’s what it felt like) circling me, and then getting trampled when the siren went. Ah, the good old days. Today’s initial plan was for me to walk him to the gate and then he’d go on from there – I’m thinking this gradual process would have helped me ease into the transition a lot better. As soon as we hopped out of the car and his little friends passed by he couldn’t wait to ditch me. I popped the bag on his back and tried to hold him long enough to explain about his lunch order, his reader and his “morning talk”. But then he bolted. I didn’t even get to mention about the cordial! He didn’t even look back. As I watched him run off, laughing, playing, (falling over), I do recall having a smile on my face - but then the realisation dawned, that was it, my little boy had become a man. I wonder if he could hear my heart breaking as he skipped off? Now I know this was a crowning moment for Mr Five Year Old, but I’m struggling to be overjoyed with this act of independence. I can see it already, pretty soon he’ll be shunning me in public, turning the cheek as I give that farewell kiss, and uttering the mumbled “muuuum, people are watching”. My little sweetpea! The only thing that’s stopping me turning into a blubbering mess is that I’m still allowed to walk down to the classroom to pick him up after school. I figure I’ve got about a week till he tells me to back off and wait up at the car.

LOCAL German Club boasts a proud history SPORT The German Club relocated from its Penola Road residence to its current premises at Square Mile, at Yahl, in 1961. The club has gone through various incarnations, including being the headquarters of The Blue Lake Air Rifle Club, from around 1967 up until around 1996 but since about 2005 has predominantly been utilised as an eightball club. There is photographic evidence of eightball teams playing out of the club from the late 60s, early 70s but the history and recollections of people involved is still ot carved in stone but being investigated. The photos that are still in existence which depict a team in German Club playing jumpers show Willie Huebner, who had a large part in building the main hall, Mike Huebner, Willie’s son, Bob Huebner, Willie’s son and current president of the club, Harold Doddridge, another Doddridge, Christian name unknown, and “Barkeep Joe. The first known all female team to call the club home was another family based team which consisted of Dianne Pannenburg, Karen Paynter, Cheryl Reed, Carol Bald, Marlene Bury, Erika Bury, and Jenny Hinton. The team, which contained three sisters and a sister-in-law from one family and two sisters from another, won the premiership of the S.E. Women’s Eightball League for three years running from 1976-1978 after the league’s inception in 1974. Paynter left in 1980 to join Glencoe and managed to win another premiership that year with her new side after defeating the German Club team in the grand final. The German Club team moved to the Federal Hotel in 1981 and from this point in time the details become quite hazy, but there were several teams based out at the club over the years - including teams for which our current treasurer Chris Schembri played - but due to a lack of accurate records and people’s memories failing it has quite hard to piece together. Fast forward to approximately 2005, when a few younger locals got themselves onto the committee and saved the club from folding, a team called The Red Barons was formed and entered in the, then, division 2 competition of the Mount Gambier Eightball Association (previously known as the South East Men’s Eightball League). Anecdotally, the team consisted of Bob Huebner, Ben Placucci, Jim Spiridis, Dave Murray, Gary Bird, Simmsy, and Lindsay Beer.

In 2007, a team made up of young players, of which some were sons of some of our existing committee members, entered the competition. The team was victorious in division 3 and according to records available was the club’s first ever MGEBA premiership. The German Club Night Owls, consisting of local stalwarts Fred Newton and Mark Walker, and a few up and coming young players, including Shaun Patzel and Joe Ratcliffe, amongst others, won the club’s maiden division 2 premiership in 2008, and went on to take out the club’s first division 1 title the following year and again in 2010 with the same team. Since then the club has won numerous premierships and been runners up in all divisions over the years including, and most notably, several division 1 titles by German Club Underdogs, who are the current reigning premiers. The division 1 grand final of the MGEBA has been an all German Club affair for the past two years running, with German Club teams facing off against one another which shows just how competitive the club now is in the local competition. Since starting off with a solitary pool table - which is still in the possession of one of our members to this day - the club has upgraded regularly over the years and added to their facilities and now boasts six competition standard tables of which one is arguably to be the best in the district.

This year, there is likely to be eight teams playing out of the German Club in the MGEBA’s winter season competition and there is also a Friday night triples tournament. These, coupled with the various tournaments run over summer, including the “Summer Mixed competition, which has been running approximately 20 years, means the club is utilised all year round. The club has also recently installed dartboards in the old schoolhouse and fielded a team in the summer season of the South East Darts Association competition and is soon installing two more boards to accommodate an extra team as they will be fielding two teams come the winter season starting end of March. The club is open to the general public whenever there is eightball or darts being played so check out the Facebook page for more information on opening times or get in contact with president Bob Huebner or treasurer Chris Schembri through Messenger.. LOCAL German Club set to host major 8 Ball tournament SPORT This weekend will see 12 teams consisting of a total of 72 players converge on the area for the 2nd Annual German Club “Square Mile Challenge” 8ball tournament which is to be held at the Mount Gambier German Club at Yahl. Teams from Portland, Bordertown and Maryborough will compete along with several local independent teams, plus teams from the Mount Gambier Commercial Club and, of course, the German Club. Players will travel from as far as Adelaide, Warrnambool, Geelong, and Melbourne to take part in the event. The weekend will kick off with the Friday night Singles Knockout which is sponsored by local

contractor E.D.I. Developments and is really just a bit of a warm up for the players before the weekends proceedings. On Saturday, the round robin section of the tournament will be played and finished up on the Sunday morning. From there we move into finals mode where the top eight teams will play off throughout the knockout stage of the tournament with the remaining two teams facing off in the grand final to see who claims the perpetual trophy, which was proudly donated by Chris Schembri and The Blue Lake Motel. To encourage eliminated players to hang around for the final and presentation there is the “The Top Rack” sponsored Scotch Doubles Knockout, held on Sunday afternoon to keep

them busy and give them one last chance to take home some cash. With more than $5000 in total prize money across the weekend, all teams will be doing their best to win the tournament which is proudly sponsored by S.E. Bingo & Diamond Cue and The Blue Lake Motel. Other local sponsors include the SE Women’s Eightball League, and also the Mount Gambier Commercial Club which is situated in Commercial Street. Local independent teams Different Strokes, and Legends who were the 2019 and inaugural winner and runner up respectively will both be looking for a repeat performance of last year’s effort but will be up against some very stiff opposition from the rest of the field and

Indians dominate Tigers South Indians returned to the winners circle with a vengeance in Friday night’s Division 1 baseball. South hit the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning when Dean Hamilton singled to left field and Alex Lewis drew a walk. Hamilton was batted in by Ben Nash and Lewis strolled home on a wild throw from first base before Bruce Morale hit safely in the top of the fourth and crossed the plate on Hamilton’s second safehit of the game. In the bottom half of the inning for Tigers, Brayden Morton hit safely to left field and scored on a fielder’s choice but the Indians added two more in the top of the fifth. Jesse’Balshaw’s fly ball to left field Ryan Placucci

was put down and Bruce Morale picked up his second safehit. They both scored on Lewis’ hit to third base, which saw the ball thrown wildly across the diamond. South secured three more runs at the top of the sixth. Ben Nash picked a walk and Ryan Placucci’s hit to third base resulted in another wild throw. Nash scored on Bruce Morale’s sacrifice fly to left field and Placucci crossed on Damien O’Dine’s safehit also to left field. O’Dine added to the score when Hamilton’s hit to first base resulted in an error giving South an eight run to one lead. Tigers pulled two runs back in the bottom of the seventh after lead off batter Garth Ransom hit safely as did Kane Harrison. Ransom was batted in by Tyrone May’s hit into a fielder’s choice play by short stop and Harrison was batted in by Joe Sims’ safe hit to centre field. Hamilton’s hit to right field was grassed allowing him to add to the Indians score when Lewis’ two-bagger landed in fair territory and the Indians wrapped up the scoring in the bottom of the ninth by adding two more runs. Tarkyn Morale picked a base on ball and Ryan Placucci hit safely for the third time in the game. Tarkyn Morale was batted in by Balshaw and Placucci by Bruce Morale giving them the win 11 runs to three over an error ridden Tigers. South Indians had 12 safehits, drew 5five walks and one hit batter, seven RBI, two K’s, left 12 runners on base and made two errors. Tigers had five safehits, 0 walks, three RBI, two K’s, left four runners on base and made 10 errors. Due to the unavailability of players from both sides because of the long weekend the

game between Federal and Central has been postponed until February 22, when they will play a double header. In the Division 2 game between Central and Federal, Central batter Leigh Kent hit a grand slam home run in his first at bat. It is a long time since that has happened in the Mount Gambier & District Baseball League. Blue Lake Y Swim Club had seven athletes compete at the 2020 SA State Championships in Adelaide last week, coming off the back of SA Country Championships less than a week earlier. Almost 1000 athletes competed from 65 clubs, including Australian Olympic athletes who will be competing at Tokyo 2020, which made for very exciting racing. Blue Lake Y athletes who competed were Hayley, Aleisha and Mikayla Pearson, Haydn Lowe, Annabelle Solomons and Thomas and Nicholas Bignell. The Blue Lake Y contingent enjoyed some medal wins, an SA Country record, several swims in finals, including reserve spots earned, and many outstanding personal best times recorded. For Annabelle and Haydn, this was their first taste of competing at a State level, with Annabelle swimming in a final and both achieving some impressive PBs. Mikayla and Nicholas both swam PBs in all their events, and Aleisha swam PBs in all but one of her events. A very tight race in the 16yo 50 fly saw Hayley finish fourth by .09 sec behind the winner of the bronze medal. RESULTS: STATE FINALS: Thomas - 15yo: 50 breast – silver, SA Country record; 100 breast – silver, 200 breast – bronze, 200 back - 6th. Hayley - 16yo: 50 fly - 4th, 100 fly 6th, 50 free 6th. LOCAL SA Country representatives do Mount Gambier proud SPORT Mount Gambier basketball was well and truly on show in Albury this year at the Australian Junior Country Cup that ran from January 13-18. The annual tournament is a great opportunity for bright and talented young basketballers from all over Australia to compete against each other and get a glimpse of what it takes to compete at the highest level. Former Lakers Coach Dan Stratford (Sharks) and Mount Gambier’s own Bryan Green, who coached the Magpies Under 16 Boys team were pleased with the week. Bryan said while the SA Country teams were significantly smaller and lacked the depth of talent to some of the other states the Mount Gambier athletes held their own, particularly Mount Gambier Local Ben Young. “Ben Young was outstanding, he was the captain of the Magpies team and led by the front, playing in a different position due to injuries but still finished the week as the fourth overall scorer, his defensive efforts on much bigger opponents was fantastic, Bryan said. Bryan was also proud of his Under 16 Lakers point guard Zach Nulty, who also performed well, coming back from a three month layoff with a knee injury. “He performed to a high standard, controlling the court from the point position and Iwas very impressed with his efforts, Bryan said. It was an exciting and nerve racking time for some of the Mount Gambier Under 14s who were attending the tournament for the first time, - Cara Nulty, Ava Collins and Stella

this throughout the week with counters to their defence but something we should be looking at in the future, Bryan said. Former Lakers, that are now based in Adelaide, Rori Perryman and Lewis Stratford had solid weeks for their sides. Rori ,who now represents Sturt in Adelaide, helped to lead her Under 16 Girls Sharks team to a top five finish. The Under 18 girls finished the week with an all SA Country game for fifth place, with Claire Hunter’s Magpies taking the honours, despite strong performances by Mount Gambier representatives Mikaela Horrigan, Sarah Nulty and Emily Dawe. Claire Hunter who received a nasty black eye in the early parts of the tournament, as she attended her ninth and final Albury tournament. “It has been great to just play basketball and make new friends, it’s been a lot of fun I’ll miss it for sure next year, Claire said.

Mobbs playing for the Magpies and Indi Lawrence and Macey Griffith as members of the Sharks team that finished fourth overall. Macey, who took to the tournament like duck to water, loved her first time experience and facing off against some of the best in her age group. “I loved meeting new people and making new friends, the Tasmanian teams really were the toughest, Macey said. Under 14 Laker Taj Brumby, who played for the Magpies, was tasked with many defensive

assignments and showed a lot of composure over the week, with his Magpies side finishing fourth overall. Bryan noticed the SA Country teams will need to improve in some areas if they are going to be competitive in the future. “The Victorian and New South Wales teams play a much more aggressive defence where they press up the floor and totally deny the wing catch, forcing the offence to start much later into the shot clock which caused a lot of bad shots, we progressively got better with
