COVER - AUSTRALIA’S LEADING SPORTS BROADCASTER NOW IN MOUNT GAMBIER Australia’s leading sports broadcaster SEN has announced expanded reach into South Australia with the launch of 1629 SEN Mt Gambier. Servicing South Australia’s South East corridor, 1629 SEN Mt Gambier will deliver 24/7 premium broadcast content to local sports fans. SEN’s presence in South Australia has increased rapidly in the past 12 months – with the station’s launch late
2018 and its recent unveiling of new studios at the iconic 1 King William Street address – known as Studio Lumo. Regular SEN SA programming will reach 1629 SEN Mt Gambier with Port Adelaide star Kane Cornes and fourtime Central Districts premiership player Andrew Hayes hosting Breakfast with Kane & Hayesy. Dwayne Russell’s Dwayne’s World will occupy the afternoon timeslot on 1629 SEN Mt Gambier while listeners
will drive home with Michelangelo Rucci and Kym Dillon’s - Kymbo & the Rooch. Pacific Star Network Chief Executive Officer, Craig Hutchison (pictured) reaffirmed the network’s growing investment in South Australia. “SEN SA’s expansion into Mt Gambier is a brilliant opportunity for us to double down on our own commitment to South Australia and better service our regional listeners with more of the sports content that they love,” Hutchison said. Listeners can also tune in via the SEN app for crystal clear coverage anytime, anywhere. 1629 SEN Mt Gambier is in the process of setting up its headquarters in Commercial Street East so is currently working out of the Lifestyle1 office in the Old Convent on Penola Road, Mount Gambier. The two media groups are now working in conjunction in a bid to provide even better opportunities for advertising clients across both mediums. Lifestyle1 general manager Jason Allen said the Lifestyle1 team was excited to be working with SEN. “It is an exciting opportunity and we believe that the combination of print and radio will be beneficial to our current and future clients,” he said. To find out more about 1629 SEN Mt Gambier advertising packages call Duncan McGregor on 0407 722 983 or Jill Collins on 0400 598 327.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - THE BLAME GAME… By ROBBIE TANSEL I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m not sure who I’m meant to blame at the moment. I’m talking about the horrific fires burning around the country. Every time I look at my social media I get to see who someone is blaming. So can someone help me? Whose fault is it? Is it those damn greenies who apparently won’t let backburning happen? Is it global warming cos the Liberals won’t set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions? Is it the defence force because they didn’t do anything to help? More importantly, at this point, who actually cares? I’m sure I’m not the only one who is sick to death of the political point scoring. When I look at my Facebook, I see countless posts with some halfbaked ignorant point that some political spin doctor somewhere has tried to share through the internet. Half of it isn’t even fact anyway. What I want to see and hear about is the people that are actually doing something to respond to the fires. The firies. The people rescuing animals. The defence force personnel doing their bit. Celebrities raising awareness and donating money to assist those in need. Let’s figure out whose fault it is or what we can do to improve things when the fires are out, people are safe and
their lives are heading back towards normalcy. The media response has been a real mixed bag. I know old mate ScoMo is copping his fair share of criticism for the way he has handled the crisis. Far be it from me to defend him, because in all fairness he’s made some pretty decent mistakes over the last couple of weeks in particular. I do wonder whether he’s getting a fair go though, and whether our response, thanks to the media, is actually contributing to the problems with modern politics. Stay with me here. If our politicians do make a mistake they are absolutely roasted in the media, and it can very quickly spiral to a point where their career is ruined. With this in the back of their mind, the politicians obviously do everything they can to avoid making a mistake. They don’t want to lose their job. They therefore avoid doing anything or saying anything unless they think it will be popular and well received. If possible, they won’t say anything. Here’s an example. Where’s the leader of Labor been over the last couple of weeks? To be honest he might have been doing lots and I wouldn’t have any bloody idea because I don’t know who the Labor leader is at the moment. To be honest, that’s almost a tactic at the moment. Try not to be noticed. I think he might actually be one of the guys I’ve never heard of on I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here. No bloody idea what the word celebrity
means. Right I’ve just Googled it and his name is Anthony Albanese. Not one of the celebrities; the Labor leader. You’re welcome. How has Mr Albanese responded to the fires? Don’t know. Maybe this means he’s out there doing his thing and doesn’t want to make a fuss about it. He just wants to help out and doesn’t want to cash in on the good deed. Or maybe he’s not doing anything and is wisely keeping a low profile because he’s scared of making a mistake. My point is, if the pollies are scared of what a mistake could mean, they avoid saying, doing or standing for anything. Which just about sums up modern politics if you ask me.
Having said that, the whole forcing people to shake your hand when they really don’t want to because there is a camera nearby is asking for trouble. It drives home the key point to me that maybe this whole democracy thing isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be and maybe it’s time we started exploring alternatives. It’s been a while since democracy has provided good results in Australia. The UK is a democracy, as is the United States and they’re big messes. That’s the only countries I know so on that basis you’d say we need to give up on democracy. I’d like to suggest we consider some sort of a dictator arrangement. Maybe we elect the dictator, but after that
we all just sit back and let him do his thing. I think dictatorships that have failed in the past have mainly been due to the wrong person being in charge. But if we pick the right person, I think it would probably go well. How about Chris Hemsworth? He’d use his power well, like Thor right? I’m sure that would end fine. Democracy is too slow. here’s too much sitting around, talking, trying to get consensus to actually achieve something. Imagine with these fires if we just had Thor pointing his finger and telling people to do something now! And waving a hammer around just to lighten the mood. Now with a dictatorship, the boss makes a decision and people better do something or heads will roll. Maybe literally. None of this namby pamby fair trial by your peers. Anyway, like I said, in the short term, let’s not waste our time with sharing political stuff on social media. Do something. Let’s get this dictatorship things sorted out after people are back on their feet. If you’d like to suggest a better dictator than Thor, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com. Yeah right. Good luck!

One woman’s look at the lighter side of kids, life and growing up! There’ll be more than a few heads nodding when I admit that in my younger days (well, up until last Thursday) I was renowned as being quite the penny pincher. I like to call it thrifty, but I think the term most use is “tight-arse. I’ll admit that in my days on grocery expeditions I have been known to remove the stalks from mushrooms to make them lighter at weigh in – I just can’t bring myself to pay for something I’m going to throw away later! But hey who hasn’t? And yes there was that occasion when I lent a friend a dollar for a chicko roll and a month later when I asked for its return, could not believe her audacity when she revealed she had no intentions of paying it back. (That’s a little embarrassing now that I look back on it).

1/4 cup (60ml) Oyster Sauce 2 tablespoons Light Soy Sauce 1 tablespoon Lee Kum Kee Chilli Garlic Sauce (optional) 150g Erawan Pad Thai Noodles 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided 500g Chicken Mince
120g fresh loose cup mushrooms, thinly sliced 1 carrot, peeled, cut into thin matchstick-size strips (about 100g) 1 small brown onion, thinly sliced (about 150g) 1 spring onion, thinly sliced
Method In a small bowl, whisk the oyster sauce, soy sauce, chilli garlic sauce, if using, and 2 tablespoons water. In a large pot of heavily salted boiling water, cook the noodles for 4-5 mins or until al dente. Rinse the noodles under cold water. Drain. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a wok or large heavy frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook, without stirring, for 2 mins or until the chicken is well browned on the bottom. Continue cooking, breaking up the chicken into small clusters, for 2-3 mins or until just cooked through. Transfer the chicken to a heatproof bowl and set aside. In the wok over high heat, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon oil. When the oil is smoking, add the mushrooms, carrot and onion and stir-fry for 2 mins or until the mushrooms are tender. Stir in the cooked chicken and then the sauce mixture. Add the noodles and toss until well combined and heated through. Divide the noodle mixture among 4 serving bowls. Garnish with spring onion and serve immediately.

So, I guess I’ve always thought my little off-spring would follow in my money conscious ways, but I’m starting to have doubts.
On the way to the toy store we stopped at a ladies fashion store where he selected a top to buy (it wasn’t even his colour), next stop was a newsagent where he wanted to buy us all drinks and a copy of The Financial Review. It was at this stage I started considering counselling! Next, thankfully, was the toy shop. Well stand back, pick up any loose children and watch out. After countless, “can I have that, “how much is that, “that’s what I’ve always wanted and even more “Ooooows the money was spent. We were all relieved and exhausted.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN AT THE BAY The Port MacDonnell School summer holiday program has kicked off with flocks of local and visiting children enjoying the many activities on offer. The weekly Storytime has continued with the festive addition of a Storytime Christmas party which was a huge hit this year hosting over 68 people attending and will become an annual fixture. The making and decorating of various Christmas ornaments and crafts were popular activities
in the week leading up to Christmas. Gingerbread decorating was also a huge highlight with children decorating their very own gingerbread men or Christmas trees to take home and enjoy. The New Year saw 2020 calendar making for children and youths to get crafty and organised for the year ahead. Upcoming activities for the remainder of the holidays include the weekly Storytime sessions commencing at 10.30am on
Tuesdays, various craft activities ranging from canvas art, beading, wind chimes, salt dough, geo boards and a whole recycling craft week. There will also be cooking sessions available in the program with bookings required. For more information or to book in to upcoming sessions, contact the Port MacDonnell Community Complex on (08) 8738 3000 or email pmcc@dcgrant.sa.gov.au

Community spirit and striving for success will be the focus of this year’s Australia Day celebrations in the Glenelg Shire, following the announcement of the ambassadors for the 2020 Australia Day civic events. International humanitarian lifeguard Simon Lewis will present at the Portland Australia Day ceremony from 8am at the Memorial Triangle and the Heywood Australia Day ceremony from 12pm on the Banks of the Fitzroy River. Mr Lewis (pictured above left) has been a figure of international leadership in the lifesaving community. Among his career achievements, he has trained lifeguards in Mexico, guided refugee rescue operations off the coast of Libya and spearheaded a campaign to provide resources for a jet ski rescue team in Greece. Simon became a finalist for the Australian of the Year Victorian Local Hero Award in 2017 and awarded an International Life Saving Federation citation of merit in 2016. His actions were acknowledged with honourable mentions in both the Commonwealth and Victorian Parliaments. Simon’s other community contributions are just as important as his rescue work. He established three public funding campaigns, raising more than $30,000 for lifesaving causes. He became the face of the Surf Lifesaving Foundation’s Australia Day Appeal, raising more than $201,000 in 2016. In 2014, Simon ran eight marathons in five months in every state and territory of Australia for the Indigenous Marathon Project. Award winning former harness racing trainer Maree Caldow will headline the Casterton Australia Day ceremony from 8am at Island Park. Mrs Caldow (pictured above right) is universally recognised in Victorian harness racing circles as one of its most influential and successful trainers. With her husband, successful freelance reinsman John Caldow, Maree has made a sizeable impact on the industry since assuming control of the family’s Melton training establishment in the 1999/2000 season. Maree proudly contributes to an industry that provides an indispensable social event bringing together communities, particularly rural and regional, throughout Victoria. The race meetings bring essential economic inflows to country towns and an opportunity to socialise in trying times when isolation can be the most biting. Maree has trained four Group
One winners including the Australasia Breeders Crown with Magic Interest and was the trainer of former Australian Mare of the Year, Nolarama. Her favourite win is the prestigious 2007 Redwood Classic with Lord of The Gym in her hometown of Maryborough. She has prepared more than 800 winners that have accumulated more than $5.6 million in prize money. A free barbecue breakfast and entertainment will be on offer at both Portland and Casterton from 8am before the formalities commence at 9am. Council also supports community organised activities in Heywood, Merino and Nelson.

FUNKY CHICKEN AUTHOR IN TOWN Calling all families, Funky Chicken has flown the coop and he is coming to the Glenelg Libraries to read you his latest story. Bestselling Australian author and presenter Chris Collin, creator of the popular ‘Funky Chicken’ book series, will visit the Portland Library on January 23 from 5:.0pm for a once off funky pyjama themed storytime session. The ‘Funky Chicken’ series follows a friendly feathered hero whose mission it is to make the world a happier, funkier place. His adventures find him in space, tropical rainforests and the Australian wilderness. Library and Information Services Manager Yvette Parker said the event would live up to its funky name, with plenty of fun entertainment and activities on offer. “There won’t be a dull moment for this special storytime session, with story-telling, puppets, singing and dancing and more planned for the hour long event. Chris is a seasoned presenter and will ensure there will be endless laughter,” she said. “Families are encouraged to make the most of the theme and come along in their brightest or craziest pyjama set, the funkier the better to impress Funky Chicken himself.” Ms Parker confirmed that there was no age limit for the event, with all ages and reading levels welcome. “Funky Chicken is designed to be enjoyed by children from preschool age right through to senior primary level,” she said. Chris Collin is an award winning author and publisher of whacky, rhyming Australian children’s books. The Mount Gambier & District Orchid Society wound up 2019 with a club celebration and presentation and Southern Thai Café attended by around 20 members. The Christmas meeting had sarcochilus as its theme with Jim Shaughnessy taking out the top prize for the night. The night was jam packed with two guest speakers – club patron Ron Parish, from Adelaide, and Kevin Western, founder of Western Orchids, the Coramandel East operation in Adelaide. Kevin has been running Western Orchids since 1985, when he founded the business, selling a range of tissue culture media, orchid species and hybrids in flask, as well as comprehensive orchid tissue culture courses enabling people to become proficient at producing orchid seedlings and clones.
Kevin was a compounding pharmacist who, among many other things pharmaceutical, was specialised in providing sterile intravenous nutrition fluids for human adults and newborns for 43 years. His experience in that area ultimately led to the development of the quite unique range of nutritious tissue culture medium for orchids and other plants. He has been a major contributor to trace element requirement studies of newborns and adults and some of his formulae generated in the late 80s are still in commercial use. Kevin developed a pharmaceutical compounding centre in a major hospital which has given him invaluable knowledge and capability as a consultant in matters of formulae, practices, processes, facilities, equipment and aseptic technique and this knowledge
has extreme parallels in the orchid tissue culture industry. The December meeting also featured an orchid display from members. The 2019 wind up came off the back of a strong year for the society with an increase in membership and a the highly successful Spring Show. The society’s AGM is on Monday, January 27, at 7.30pm at its headquarters in the Reidy Park Centre, O’Halloran Terrace, Mount Gambier. New members are always welcome. Memberships range from $15 and $25 for the year. Above (far left) - Jim Shaughnessy’s winning orchid from the December meeting. Above (centre & right) - The 2019 December meeting orchid display.
YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED Two local indigenous students have received funding to assist with their future studies as part of the Glenelg Shire Council Aboriginal Education Scholarship program. Portland’s Jannah Firebrace, 21 and former Heywood resident Jerrika Pevitt, 18, were both successful in receiving $3000 scholarships which will be used to cover the financial costs of their tertiary level studies. Ms Firebrace will use the funds to undertake a Bachelor of Social Work at the Institute of Koorie Education (Deakin University). Ms Pevitt’s scholarship will contribute towards the costs of completing a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne. Both recipients were overwhelmed by the announcement, describing the scholarship program as ‘life-changing’. “It’s been a whirlwind past few weeks, from finding out my ATAR, to being accepting into university and now receiving the scholarship, it’s been crazy but in the best way possible,” said Jerrika. “I’ll use the scholarship funding to assist with the costs of equipment and resources for my science degree. I am really looking forward to starting my course in the New Year and embarking on the first step of my career journey. “The scholarship program is a fantastic initiative, too often rural students are disadvantaged due to the distance and cost, and there is a lack of funding opportunities. This scholarship alleviates the burden for students and better yet the application process is lifestyle1.net | 26
simple and straightforward.” Ms Firebrace said she was inspired to pursue her passion for social work as a result of her employment with Dhauwurd-Wurrung Elderly and Community Health Service (DWECH). “In my current role at DWECH I’ve seen the first hand the impact of collaboration from general and allied health services and how this can make a difference to the lives of community members,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to help others, and this degree will offer a number of career opportunities for me to give back to the community and assist those in need. “The news [about the scholarship] still doesn’t feel quite real, it will be a whole new chapter of my life but I am really excited about. I will actually be the first person in my family to undertake tertiary level education, so going to university next year is going to be pretty life changing. “I’ll most likely use the funds to pay for essential course resources; the first thing on the list is a new laptop to help complete the online study components.” Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank congratulated the successful applicants who will use the grant to assist in covering school fees, books, stationary, compulsory clothing and travel expenses to complete their course. “I applaud the efforts of these students who have built strong aspirations for their futures and are inspiration to many,” she said. “Research shows that only two out of 10 Aboriginal
students within the Glenelg Shire are staying at school to complete year 12 study. These grants are an important catalyst to create change and reverse this trend.” The successful applicants were chosen based on recommendations from the Glenelg Mara Quorin Aboriginal Advisory Committee. The scholarship program has been offered since 2014 and aims to encourage Glenelg Shire based Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander residents to study beyond year 12 and in an area relevant to Local Government. RECYLING UPDATE Mount Gambier residents should continue to put cardboard and paper in kerbside recycling bins despite a recent decline in the market value for the material. There will be no changes to the service at this time despite a recent decision by Green Triangle Recyclers to introduce a charge for accepting cardboard via their Eucalypt Drive facility. “The market value of cardboard has plummeted in recent weeks to the point that it is not covering the contractor’s cost of processing and transportation and as a result the business feels it can no longer take it free of charge at their facility,” Mount Gambier City Council general manager city infrastructure Nick Serle said. Despite this change, council remains committed to preventing cardboard and paper from ending
up in landfill. “I encourage residents to continue recycling as they have always done, being mindful to not put contaminants in their recycling bins,” Mr Serle said. “It is only contamination from the recycling service that ends up in landfill.Despite the decline in the cardboard and paper market it is still more cost effective for council to recycle the product rather than send it to landfill. Sending materials unnecessarily to landfill results in the cell being filled much quicker which then becomes a costly exercise for both the Council and the environment.” Following a meeting with Green Triangle Recyclers proprietor Ian Weber ate last year, Mr Serle said the kerbside recycling service will continue as usual to reduce the amount of material entering Caroline Landfill. “Hopefully
this is just a small bump in the recycling road and the market for cardboard does turn around in the near future but in the meantime we will continue to process the material as we always have,” Mr Serle said. In addition to the kerbside recycling service, council also accepts a number of items free of charge at the Waste Transfer Station including good quality re-usable items (suitable for resale at the ReUse Market), televisions, computers and computer products, some types of polystyrene, liquid paint, motor oil, metals and batteries.

An entertaining weekend is planned for the youth of Wattle Range on the weekend of January 18 & 19, with big screen movies in the Millicent Domain and giant kites at the surf beach in Beachport. Movies in the Park will be held on Saturday January 18, in the Millicent Domain Parklands. Screening Missing Link at 5pm and Aladdin at 7.30pm. Movie goers are invited to bring a blanket or low chair and catering by local service clubs will be available. The giant kites will be flown by the Adelaide Kite Flyers Association. The Beachport Surf Life Saving Club will be cooking a BBQ. Wattle Range Council’s director development services, Steve Chapple was happy to announce the events. “Council is excited to bring both these free events to our local communities, he said. “These are great opportunities for families to experience and have fun together. STUNNING SETTING FOR CONCERT Award winning and nationally acclaimed Adelaide-based concert series, The Porch Sessions, is heading on tour this summer, coming to Dunkeld on Wednesday, January 22, for one magical night. The tour visits nine other porches between Byron Bay and Adelaide, but, in perhaps the most spectacular location of the trip, the team will perform at the 1840s Mt Sturgeon Homestead in Dunkeld, the southern entrance to the Grampians National Park, located in the Greater Hamilton region. This family-friendly, accessible, non-smoking event is suitable for all ages, and includes live performances by Australian musicians Merpire, Hannah Blackburn and Forever Son. Southern Grampians Shire Mayor Councillor Chris Sharples said he looked forward to welcoming this unique event to the Greater Hamilton region. “Our council plan prioritises developing our economy, our community, and promoting our natural environment, CR Sharples said. “By attracting a unique event to our region which may encourage visitation during what is often a quieter month, we’re not only providing an opportunity for an engaging experience beneath our majestic mountains, but we’re raising our profile as a great location for such events. Sharni Honor, ‘Governor’ of The Porch Sessions, said it promised to be a special event. “We can’t wait to bring our incredible touring artists to the Southern Grampians, and see everyone nestled in on Persian rugs beneath festoon lights and the starry sky, with that incredible mountain backdrop. It’s going to be a truly magical night, Sharni said. Attendees are encouraged to pack a picnic and to bring reusable water bottles. Alcohol can be purchased from the Royal Mail Hotel’s pop-up bar and there is no BYO. The Southern Grampians Shire Council, through Hamilton’s Trotters Coaches, will offer shuttle buses directly to the venue as there will be no parking on-site. Exceptions will be made for guests with accessibility requirements. Three subsidised return bus shuttles will operate from Hamilton, seats on which can be booked online when securing your ticket to the event. A free shuttle service will take attendees from the Dunkeld & Grampians Visitor Information Centre to and from the event, assisted by the volunteers from the Grampians Cricket Club in Dunkeld. Details on the event, artists, tickets and inspiring local information is available at www.theporchsessions.com/ontour. Limited tickets for the event and the buses are available online until sold out. Anyone needing assistance to book, or seeking information on accommodation and other local attractions should contact the Hamilton & Grampians Visitor Information Centre on 1800 807 056.

SISTER ACT STARS AT NATIONAL TITLES
Mount Gambier born and bred sisters Amber and Georgia Hood again played an integral part in South Australia’s 2020 Gilley’s Shield campaign at the Australian National Softball Championships. SA’s open team, playing under the moniker the Starz, earnt the right to play off against defending champions New South Wales, who were gunning for their 23rd title, with a hard fought victory over Queensland in the preliminary final with only the top three teams in the tournament qualifying for the abridged finals series. The grand final was a tight encounter that saw
the match postponed for two hours courtesy of a power blackout when SA were stranded with two down at the top of the seventh. On the return at 10.30pm WA time, SA was unable to score and neither did the reigning champs, forcing the match into extra innings, where teams start with a runner on second base. It was not until the bottom of the ninth that the New South Wales Firestars found a way to score when experienced campaigner Stacey Porter hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing grand final MVP Rachel Lack to score. It was Lack’s triple at the bottom of the fifth that brought in the Firestars earlier run with the catcher rarely out of the play in the tense decider. With 13 matches in seven days, it was gruelling schedule for the teams with the tournament highlight being SA’s first victory in a number of years over New South Wales on day five. Georgia (pictured above right) spent the majority of the tournament at first base, only taking to the pitching mound in the final round fixture against Western Australia. With the Starz already safe in third, Georgia was able to give starting pitcher Jailyn Ford, who was named Pitcher of the Tournament, a chance to rest ahead of the tense finals series that was played on the one day. Amber (pictured left) owned the left field position, as well as playing a role in the infield at second for a couple of matches. The strong pitching of Ford, a US import, meant Georgia was always in the play on the end of a number of outs at first as most batters struggled to
penetrate the infield thanks to Ford’s performance on the mound. SA opened the championships with a 1-0 win over Queensland, before going down by the same scoreline the same day to New South Wales. Amber was prominent in the tightly contested clash with three catches. SA won its day two clash with Victoria in a dramatic extra innings contest that saw both Hood sisters playing prominent roles. Amber took a couple of catches and used her short game to great effect to advance the Starz runners but it was in the ninth innings that the sisters really shone. Georgia made a crucial out at the top of the ninth before Amber put her strong arm to good use, taking a catch at left field and throwing out the runner at home to ensure Victoria did not break the deadlock.
Georgia then provided the heroics required in the batting box with a safehit to centrefield to score the tie breaking run. SA lost its round four match to WA, 2-3, with Amber’s short game with the bat again helping SA score and that match was followed with another narrow loss, 1-2, to Queensland. A 0-2 loss to New South Wales followed before the Starz bounced back for a 2-0 victory over the Victorian Titans. A 1-0 victory over Western Australia followed with both Amber and Georgia recording safehits that were part of SA’s only run. The team’s worst loss of the tournament followed, going down 1-7 to Queensland but it did provide Georgia’s highlight of the tournament – an over the fence home run at the bottom of the second. That performance appeared to spur the Starz on, producing that drought breaking win over eventual champions New South Wales. In this match Georgia was in her usual role at first base and it was one of Amber’s matches at second base. Georgia produced a couple of safehits in the clash. The Starz backed up that stunning victory with a 8-2 win over Victoria before closing out with a loss to WA in the final dead rubber, with Georgia pitching the first five digs and producing five strike outs. The girls will now return to domestic competition in Adelaide, with further national events still on the horizon. PHOTOS COURTESY OF BRIONY BONYTHON
SOMERFIELD STUNS MIL LEL IN RECORD BREAKING INNINGS Mil Lel would have been content with its 5/200 from its 40 overs in the weekend’s Barber Shield one day fixtures. Some middle order big hitting from Carey Megaw and Daniel Justin in a 77 run fourth wicket stand looked to have set the home side South Gambier a tough run chase. Megaw hit seven fours in his 51 from 54 balls, while Justin cleared the boundary three times and hit three fours in his 54 from 56 balls. But what they didn’t count on was the brilliance of allrounder Dave Somerfield, in his return season with his home club South Gambier, after a couple of seasons with Penola. Mil Lel got off to the perfect start with ball in hand with a wicket with only four runs on the board and while they knew Somerfield was the danger man as he strode to the crease, they could not have predicted what was to come. Somerfield set about destroying the Mil Lel attack, hitting 18
fours and nine sixes as he powered to a record breaking 165 from 111 balls. He shared a 73 run second wicket stand with David Vine, who was the perfect foil with his 32 from 44 and then it was Somerfield’s long time team mate Josh Thompson who got to watch the Somerfield show continue before he holed out to Ben Thiel from the bowling of Megaw. By then, though, South had already secured the points, and by the end of the 40th over had amassed 4/259 with Thompson unbeaten on 43. Somerfield’s 165 eclipsed Richard Crute’s 141 in round five of this season, meaning Crute, who knocked former North Gambier opener Matt McInerney and his innings of 132 in the 2017/18 season off the top of the all time one day scores in the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association only held his crown for two rounds before Somerfield claimed the throne. Mil Lel has the ignominy of being the opponent for all three of those stunning innings. In other matches, Penola’s posted 181 in its 40 overs thanks to a solid grounding by opener Jack Mullan (77) and some middle order hitting from Mark Smith, who compiled 36 from 35 balls, and an unbeaten 31, from 32 balls, from allrounder Mick Waters. Sam Willis was the best of the West attack with 3/30 from his eight overs. CONT. OPP. PAGE

SPORT NEW COACH BRINGS WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE TO THE ROLE Blue Lake Soccer Club president Stuart Cooper is supremely optimistic about the 2020 season with a new coach and the revitalisation of the Under 17 program two vital pieces of the puzzle as he looks to make the Rangers a destination club in the Limestone Coast Football Association. “We have been lucky to have coaches from within the playing group but every so often you like to, not reinvent the wheel, but expose your player to a different style of play, someone to bring fresh ideas, new ideas,” he said. And that is where newly appointed coach Sergio Cesaro comes in – a veteran of more than four decades involved int the sport and with a passion for the game and a desire to develop clubs on and off the field. “Every club wants success but he also want to keep it fun and enjoyable,” Cooper said. Snaring a non-playing coach was more by chance than design but the Rangers president could not be happier with the club’s new chief in charge. “If a top level playing coach had wanted to come to Blue Lake of course we would have done that but it is great to have a non-playing coach – someone who can focus wholly and solely on the players themselves and not his own game,” Cooper said. Tristan Guess & Jared Vause have headed up the Blue Lake coaching duties for the past two seasons, having cut their teeth on the Under 17 team in
2017 but both were keen to focus on their own game and while they will still be strong leaders at the club, being able to focus on just playing should bring a level of freedom to their performances on the pitch. A knee replacement last March saw Sergio take a break from the game he first fell in love with as a 15 year old playing Amateur League seniors in Adelaide, and when he moved to Mount Gambier in April, it was the women’s game that eventually attracted his attention, working with International’s female program. “I heard from some friends in Adelaide that Blue Lake were looking for a new senior coach and I decided to out my name forward,” Sergio said. “Inter was very welcoming and I loved it there but I realised I still had a passion to coach and Inter certainly didn’t need any help and I wanted to work at a club where they need some experience and expertise.” A meeting with Cooper and a couple of other club heavyweights saw the two parties click and the deal was struck. “My emphasis is getting people enjoying the game again,” Sergio said. “I don’t just concentrate on what happens on the pitch, I want the club to become a real community and a place where people want to be.” Keen to develop the club’s young talent, Sergio is running a coaching clinic this week with the
club’s juniors and its affiliated women’s team, United, also set to take part. Sergio only recently gave away playing the game he loves when a knee injury saw him fall just shy of 700 games as a player – he has also racked up a similar number as a coach, working across 30 different clubs, through men’s, women’s and school programs. The Blue Lake president knew he had made the right call on Sergio when he trawled social media after the appointment. “All the positive comments on social media and people telling us how lucky we were was great to see,” Cooper said. “We know he will be able to bring the players together both on and off the field.” Sergio knows he’s in for a challenge having seen what other clubs bring to the table as a spectator last season. “We will do our best, have fun and be competitive, those things I will guarantee but I can’t predict results,” Sergio said. And while he is looking forward to developing the young talent at the Malseed Park based club, he will give anyone a go that earns it. “I won my first premiership when I was 42 and two other clubs said I was too old and didn’t want me,” Sergio said. That was with Elizabeth Vale and it means Sergio is all too aware of the value of the experienced players in any development of any club. He was still playing at 54 and is unofficially the
oldest person to ever score a goal in that Division 5 competition. Sergio has worked alongside a raft of impressive names in Australian football, headlined by former Socceroos Milan Ivanovic and Steve Maxwell. He also worked closed with John Evans, a stalwart of South Australian football, who was instrumental in setting up the South Australian Sports Institute program. Pre-season kicks off this week with sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7.45pm. Seniors and Under 17 players, both present and new, are more than welcome to attend. Above - Blue Lake Soccer Club president Stuart Cooper with newly appointed coach Sergio Cesaro.
SOMERFIELD STUNS MIL LEL FROM OPP. PAGE Crumbling to 3/14 in quickfire time, West Gambier was never really in the hunt with Connor Prior’s 49 the only real resistance to the Penola attack. Waters and Jase Bateman both finished with three wickets apiece as the Eagles dismissed the Roos for 103 in the 34th over. In the frinal game of the round, runs were at a premium, with North Gambier only managing 9/87 with Aidan Thatcher the best of the yellow caps with 29.But East barely made a dent in the run chase, dismissed for 42 in the 16th over. Declan Kenny and Nick McINerney carved their way through the top order – Kenny with 3/11 from his only over and McInerney with 2/1 – before Kayne Badman (3/13) and Elliott Fisher (2/5) cleaned up the tail. RACING ICON HEADED TO BORDERLINE SPEEDWAY FOR KING’S CHALLENGE
A capacity field of 48 sprintcars are set to vie for the 2020 King’s Challenge at the Borderline Speedway on Thursday, January 23, including defending champion and hometown hero – Steven Lines (pictured opp.page). The Mount Gambier based driver last won the event in 2018, with Mother Nature forcing the cancellation of last year’s racing. Lines is one of three local hopes contesting the King’s Challenge, with Glen Sutherland and Jake Tranter also giving fans a familiar face to cheer home. The King’s Challenge is the Borderline Speedway’s premier event that was inaugurated in 1995, following the hosting of the Australian Sprintcar Championship, to give the club its own annual meeting. This year’s action packed night will also include junior sedans and a demonstration from Classic Super Modifieds, which were the precursor to the modern day sprint car. There are seven Americans in the 2020 field – Shane Stewart, Tim Shaffer, Corey Eliason, Gio Scelzi, Buddy Kofoid, Carson Macedo and Kyle Larson. The US contingent are also set to compete at the Avalon President’s Cup and in Warrnambool at Premier Speedway’s Annual Sprintcar Classic – those two event bookending the King’s Challenge, in this region. Larson is one of the biggest names in US racing and he competes Across a number of categories. He recently won the New Zealand Speedcar Series and then headed back to the United States to race the Chilli Bowl, also in a speedcar. Brooke Tatnell, who will be racing for Ray Scott, as he did in the World Series Sprintcars, where he won the Borderline Speedway round, has been racing in the United States, as has Scott Bogucki, giving the visiting American fans a couple more household names to check out. The strong US contingent will also see two minibus loads of spectators converge on the Glenburnie track, including Knoxville Speedway’s flag marshall Doug Clark (pictured above), who officiated his 37th and final Knoxville Nationals in August last year. FROM OPP. PAGE A steward and flag marshal for four decades, Clark is in the US National Sprintcar Hall of Fame and has handed over his Knoxville role to his son Justin. During his illustrious career, Doug flagged races in 19 states, with his almost four decades at Knoxville and a 29 year stint at Huset’s Speedway, which is now known as Badlands Motor Speedway, near his home town of Sioux Falls, in South Dakota. Doug can blame his older brother Jim for getting him into the sport. Jim worked at the local welding shop and that was were the cars that raced at Huset’s were built and repaired and once Doug had witnessed that part of the car racing industry, he was determined to go and watch the cars doing their best work on the track. So, as an 11 year old, he struck a bargain with the welding shop’s owner – he would sweep the shop floor in exchange for a ride to the speedway. And so began a lifelong affection for the car racing industry, with Doug getting hands on when he was 15, helping driver Bill Hill with his car, and then working with a number of drivers. The growth of sprintcars in the region saw the construction of Hartford Speedway, which opened in 1976, and that’s when Doug’s flag marshalling days began. Hartford Speedway closed in 1983 and Doug secured the full time gig at Jackson Speedway, in Minnesota before he snared the Knoxville gig, having already flagged at the 1981 Knoxville Nationals. In his early years, Doug did face racism as aa African American official in what was basically a white man’s sport but eventually his reputation as one of the finest flag marshals in the United States stamped out those racist attitudes and he was recruited to flag many of the World of Outlaws races right across the United States. Making a career out of flag marshalling also meant he kept a promise he made his parents – that he would never race. It is certainly an honour for the Borderline Speedway to have such an iconic figure at their premier event, the King’s Challenge. Gates open at 4pm with racing from 5pm with tickets available online at www.borderlinespeedway.com.au or at the gate for the January 23 meeting.
