LONG TRIP FOR MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE Driftwood and shells are the usual haul for Stephen Hockey from a walk on Brown’s Beach but the self-confessed beachcomber, who was out with his dogs clearing his

head after two long days at work, found so much more on May 17. “I had packed the dogs into the car, headed off to Brown’s just for a quick walk,” Stephen said. “We’ve always

been beachcombers so we are always looking at the ground as much as the waves.” And it was during a scan of the beach in front of him that Stephen spotted what turned out to be a Gatorade bottle containing a heartfelt note that has seen the Hockey family strike up a relationship with a family from Argentina. “Whenever you see a bottle on the beach you always take a second look and wonder if maybe there is something in it,” Stephen said. On this occasion there was something in the bottle – a freezer bag containing what was clearly a letter. Stephen’s initial challenge was he could not remove the lid but always prepared he had a pocketknife handy and cut open the bottom of the bottle. The second challenge was the letter, once removed, was in Spanish. Even then, Stephen still never dreamed the message in a bottle had travelled at least 13,000km – which it had, from the town of Comodoro Rivadavia, released at a beach in the Golfo de San Jorge. “Even though it was in a foreign language that did not mean it was necessarily going to be an earth shattering find and it could have come off a ship or from a tourist in Australia,” Stephen said. Once home, a cursory glance and some basic Spanish understanding saw Stephen quickly ascertain it was a

letter from a family – the hand writing suggesting an adult as well as young children – but an email address on the letter meant he could investigate further. “We probably did work out early on that it was a letter to a deceased loved one,” Stephen said. And so it proved to be. Putting key phrases into Google Translate started to piece together the story and so Stephen emailed the key author - Pierina Sosa – and so a beautiful story has unfolded. “I had a response the next day and she was so happy it had been found,” Stephen said. The letter was written, sealed and sent by Pierina and her two children, a son Gonzalo, with down syndrome and a daughter, Romina on March 5, 2017. It marked the one year anniversary

of the death of Pierina’s husband and the children’s father Rodolfo. “They decided to mark the occasion by visiting one of his favourite beaches, which was near where they lived, and they all wrote a letter to Rodolfo and threw it into the ocean,” Stephen said. “One of the reasons she was glad it was found, is she was apprehensive to throw a bottle into the ocean because of her concern for the environment.” And like so many parents have before, Pierina has found herself with a challenging dilemma. “She told the kids if it was ever found, they would travel to wherever it was found,” Stephen said. “Obviously she never expected it to go as far as it did so she is re-evaluating that promise.” Stephen and his wife Katrina have also contemplated travelling to meet the family but if that trek ever eventuated it will be a fair way down the track. “I would like to give her the original letters back,” Stephen said. He has maintained communication with Pierina, including exchanging family photos and photos of the bottle and letter, and the story has been reported in a local Argentinian newspaper, with the communication now not just relying on Google Translate but also Eric Nieto, affectionately known as Spanish in local soccer and building circles, who has been a huge help and has also sent his own emails to the family. Pierina is a retired school teacher and coincidentally, her children are a similar age to Stephen’s children – Charli and April. While some of the letter is illegible, Stephen was astonished about how well-preserved it was. “There was no water inside the bottle and there was really only one page that had sections that were difficult to read,” he said. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - IT DOESN’T EVEN HURT… By ROBBIE TANSEL I thought I came to a major realisation recently as to why we have so many health issues these days. I

worked it out while at the dentist. Here’s what happened. I popped in to the dentist as I’d lost

a couple of capping things off my teeth as well as a filling. The lovely dental assistant put a bib on me, gave me a pair of protective glasses to wear, tipped the seat back and changed the channel of the television on the ceiling so that it was showing a programme she thought I’d enjoy. The dentist had a friendly chat with me before asking me to open my mouth wide and proceeding to have a good examination. He did the usual thing of telling the lovely dental assistant that C3 was a 5 and D2 was a 1, which I think translates as, “His right buttocks seems to be raised a fair bit off the seat, so I suspect he’s got a fair bit of money in that wallet. Let’s make sure we cash in.” From there he declared that he needed to do extensive repairs to the

damaged areas. He made it clear to me that the condition of my teeth was terrible and I needed to cut back on the soft drink that I drink. This seemed like a bit of a funny attitude to me, to be honest. His business is built on me doing damage to my teeth. Obviously he has to dance on the fine line between them being bad enough that they need repairs, but not so bad that they need to be removed, leaving me with no teeth and no reason to visit his dentist. Anyway I politely nodded along with no particular intention of cutting back on acidic soft drinks, as I really like them. From there, he announced that I’d feel a little pinch as he anaesthetised the area. After that there was no pain. He put some sort of a drop mat into my

mouth to stop debris from falling into the back of my throat during his work. He seemed to be having a fair bit of trouble attaching this device, so really had to wrestle it into place with a lot of force. From my perspective it felt like when I used to watch Steve Irwin trying to catch a troublesome crocodile, and that’s not an exaggeration. Eventually he attached it and then it was time to get down to business. The next half an hour was the nice dentist man drilling, attaching substances to my teeth, jamming things in my mouth, shining some sort of light into mouth, rinsing and vacuuming, and generally just shaking my head and neck around. Eventually he was finished with the repair and removed all of his assorted paraphernalia from my gob. Going back to my original premise, why do we have so many health issues these days? Well in my experience at the dentist, the whole thing was essentially painless. The dentist could drill as much as he want, roughly try to jam equipment between teeth and I didn’t feel a thing. Meanwhile I laid back comfortably in the chair and watched the news. Back in the olden days, people feared the dentist. For good reason. It hurt like buggery. They had terrible chairside manner. They’d rip your teeth out rather than fix them. Avoiding the torment and terror of going to the dentist was worth making a priority. In our modern world where caring about how patients are feeling is such a priority, a dentist couldn’t get away with being anything but pain free and friendly. The biggest problem with the dentist these days is that it’s hard to drink without dribbling for the next hour and a half. Likewise going to the doctor is really quite pleasant these days. They’re professional. They care. They try to be gentle in how they tell you to stop eating junk food, get off your fat butt and do some exercise. Any procedure you’re subjected to is relatively safe and pain free due to all of the modern developments in medicine. Why would I want to take care of my health? Even if I don’t, things will still be fine. There is no incentive to look after my health, or my teeth I thought. And then I went to pay my bill for the dental appointment. And that was worse than any root canal, tooth extraction or filling I’ve ever had. That hurt real good. If you’d like to purchase a relatively good left leg, email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS

One woman’s look at the lighter side of kids, life and growing up! We’ve been quarantined. We may not have the yellow banner surrounding the house, but we are well and truly off limits. I find myself wistfully staring out the window, clutching the phone and watching the television for glimpses of the outside world. We’ve been hit by the pox – and it’s hit us hard. It’s been seven days of constant, unforgiving quality time with Mr Five Year Old and Mr Two Year Old, and while I love spending the time, I believe we are about to kill each other. Yesterday, I argued with Mr Five Year Old about the name of a Sesame Street character (I swear it’s Telly), and I even found myself challenging Mr Two Year Old in a dispute over Bob the Builder (yes, he is going out with Wendy). Do you think I’m starved for conversation? While all this is going on, Mr Two Year Old (pox boy) is handling the virus like a little champion. With minimal whimpering he’s soldiering on - his male genes mustn’t have kicked in yet. Trying to make sure we don’t infect the rest of the region, is proving to be quite an artform – especially when you’re a single mother. I’m pretty much making Mr Five Year Old dive roll out the car door when I drop him off for school (it’s alright I slow down a little), and when it comes time to pick him up, it’s a grab and run – literally! If I have to be honest though, my biggest concern is not if the country becomes infected, it’s if Mr Five Year Old becomes the next pox boy. While he is toughening up, this is one little man who doesn’t like pain, splinters, scratches or the sight of blood. In fact I can guarantee that if he does get the chicken pox that he’ll handle it like a real man – not well!

Haloumi bake 2 tablespoons pine nuts 60ml (1/4 cup) extra virgin olive oil 2 medium zucchini, thinly sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 400g can cherry tomatoes 1 large fresh basil sprig 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar 40g (1/4 cup) plain flour

1 egg, lightly whisked 30g (3/4 cup) panko breadcrumbs 250g haloumi, cut into 8 slices 100g mozzarella, cut into 5 slices Fresh basil sprig, plus extra leaves, to serve Balsamic vinegar, to drizzle (optional)

Method Place the pine nuts in a medium frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook, shaking the pan occasionally, for 3 minutes or until the pine nuts are golden. Transfer to a bowl. Heat 2 teaspoons of the oil in the frying pan. Add the zucchini and cook for 2 minutes each side or until golden. Transfer to a plate. Add the garlic to the pan and cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until aromatic. Add the tomatoes and basil sprig. Season and simmer for 10 minutes or until thickened slightly. Stir in the balsamic. Meanwhile, place the flour, egg and breadcrumbs in 3 separate bowls. Working with 1 slice of haloumi at a time, coat in flour, shaking off excess. Dip in egg then press in breadcrumbs to coat. Transfer to a plate. Heat the remaining 2 1/2 tablespoons of oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook the haloumi for 1 minute each side or until golden and crisp. Transfer to a plate. Preheat a grill to medium. Arrange the haloumi and zucchini in a small baking dish. Remove the basil sprig from the tomato mixture and drizzle between and slightly over the haloumi. Top the haloumi with slices of mozzarella. Place under the grill for 3 minutes or until the mozzarella is golden. Sprinkle with the pine nuts, extra basil leaves and drizzle with extra balsamic, if using.

LONG TRIP FOR MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

FROM PAGE 4 Stephen intends to maintain his contact with the family, touching base from time to time and making contact at special times of the year, including Christmas. “She seems like quite a religious person and she has taken this (someone finding the message in a bottle) as a reinforcement of her faith,” Stephen said. “It has been wonderful to see what a positive impact it has had on her.” When the first line of the letter is translated, you can tell, composing a letter to Rodolfo was a key part of her healing - “Hello love. Wherever you are, I want to tell you that I miss you. I know you didn’t want to leave, because you still had a lot of projects to accomplish. I will always love you

and you will be the best thing that ever happened to me,” Pierina wrote. Rodolfo died unexpectedly as the result of a stroke and Pierina told her local newspaper that writing the letter was all about healing. “You try to make the children suffer as little as possible, try to cope with the loss from another place; from the good memories, from the things lived,” she said. This is actually the second time Stephen has discovered a message in a bottle but this is by far the best and most touching story of the two. “The first time was in Port Fairy when I was a kid and it had come from the Port Fairy Caravan Park so not an interesting story at all.” Above - Comodoro Rivadavia

MUSICAL THEATRE PROGRAM ON OFFER Dream of being a triple threat? Want something different to do in the summer school holidays? Enjoy singing, dancing or acting? A new initiative in Mount Gambier could be just the ticket then, with MJ Dance Studio and Phoenix Music Studios combining with the genius of Mike Bakker and Scott Maxwell to create a one week Musical Theatre holiday program this January. Running from January 13-17 and ending with a January 18 performance, anyone interested in being part of this pilot program needs to contact Phoenix Music Studio by November 30 to secure their place. The brainchild of vocal and acting teacher Jodi Swiggs, director of Phoenix Music Studios, the program aims to provide an alternative to OSCH or other school holiday programs to keep the kids entertained. “I got the idea from a colleague in Queensland who runs a successful music school there and she suggested the idea after she was here adjudicating our Rock School vocal students,” Jodi said. “It is a huge undertaking but we are hoping it will be a huge success and something we can look at doing regularly.” Of course if you are after a musical in Mount Gambier you can’t go past the dynamic duo of Mike Bakker and Scott Maxwell, who already have three original musicals under their belt with Grant High School. The Bakker-Maxwell collaboration have written yet another original for the holiday program ready for the January

18 performance at the Wehl Street Theatre. To keep things simple in the program’s inaugural, the music will be pre-recorded, but the rest of the show will be live after just one week of intense preparation. “It was great to have Maria (Slape, from MJ Dance) and Scott (Maxwell) so keen to be involved from the first time I mentioned it,” Jodi said. Jodi will take charge of the singing and acting, with Maria utilising her award winning choreography skills as the kids go from auditioning on day one to performing on day six, making the program both daunting and exciting at the same time. “Something like this has never been done before in Mount Gambier so that’s pretty cool,” Jodi said. The program costs $350 with plans already afoot for keeping the costumes and sets simple, tapping into MJ Dance Studio’s expansive costume collection, as well as plenty of everyday items that can be sourced from home. The production is called Nobody’s Home and the program is targeting kids aged 8-16 and there is no need to interested kids to be students at Phoenix or MJ Dance. “We are encouraging anyone to get involved and from all around the region,” Jodi said. Kids from Lucindale and Portland have already registered. Each day will run from 9am to 5pm and you can register your interest, book your space or get more information by emailing enquiries@ phoenixstudios.com.au

To accentuate a tall ceiling, mount the drapes about a foot above windows and doors. MORE THAN FUNCTIONAL Instead of a classic, sturdy timber coffee table, make the coffee table a statement piece. Choose a coloured wooden table or head to antique and second hand furnoture stores and see what treasures you can find that can be transformed into a coffee table that adds character to the living space. Shelving can also be less boring by chosing more decorative stoarge solutions.

The fireplace used to be the heart of your home but there are still plenty of ways to decorate a non-working fireplace. These decor ideas dress up the mantle and hearth without relying on fire, so the centerpiece of your living room can always look its best year-round. Find inspiration on using the niche as a mini bookcase or hiding a TV above the fireplace. Since your fireplace serves as the focal point for the whole space, take it as a opportunity to showcase beloved artwork or antiques. Ready to roll up your sleeves and get started on a weekend DIY project? Painting over red brick will make your hearth feel more modern, or give a wood mantel a fresh coat in a new color. Your fireplace can wear both neutral and bright hues equally, so go ahead and try something new. Books, plants, and prints can all find a home in the fireplace area.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT STALWART REACHES 25 YEARS OF SERVICE Councillor Shirley Little, who is a representative on the Disdtrict Council of Grant, has been recognised for her 25 years of tireless service for the community. Starting her local government journey in 1994, Shirley has represented Tarpeena for 25 years and has been a vocal advocate for the community of Tarpeena and surrounds. Amazingly Shirley was the local postie for some 40 years, retiring in 2015. She has witnessed firsthand the ups and downs of life in a small rural community. “Tarpeena is a different place to the one it was many years ago,” Shirley said. “The school closed in 2011 due

to dwindling enrolments and the 2010 closure of the Nangwarry Mill hit the town hard. But the community spirit is strong and we are seeing young families moving back to the area for an affordable country lifestyle. We now have a population of about 415 people with 124 families living in the area which is wonderful.” Shirley also vividly remembers the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires that claimed 14 lives and destroyed countless properties and affected Tarpeena. “There is only a small group left in Tarpeena that experienced the devastation of Ash Wednesday, however we all need to remain vigilant and be prepared for the

upcoming fire season,” Shirley said Shirley also helped steer the council through the 1996 amalgamation of the District Council of Mount Gambier and the District Council of Port MacDonnell to form the District Council of Grant and reflecting on her 25 years of service, thought she had contributed some good for the betterment of the whole of the district. “I have been an active participator in life in Tarpeena, not only in my role with the post office but on the Tarpeena Progress Association, Tarpeena Cancer Support Group, Tarpeena Football Club Management Committee and I was very involved with the local school, where

four generations of my family have attended. I believe in representing my community and I must continue to make it a great place to live,” Shirley said. Although there has been a demise of sport in Tarpeena, Shirley is particularly buoyed by the resumption of cricket in Tarpeena which she says has been great for the young ones. Shirley’s passion for her community is as strong today as it was 25 years ago and council and the community acknowledge this significant milestone in her local government career. Shirley was presented with a local government association certificate and pin for her 25 years of service to

local government, and representing her community at last week’s council meeting.

LOCAL AUTHOR TURNS HER PASSION INTO A NEW CAREER

RECYCLING IN FOCUS The Riddoch & Main Corner Complex and Mount Gambier Library have hosted activities as part of National Recycling Week and there is still a chance for you to get involved with the encore screening of the documentary 2040 on Novmeber 24 at 1pm. The documentary is the work of award-winning director Damon Gameau who embarks on a journey to explore what the future would look like by the year 2040 if we embraced the best practice solutions to improve our planet and shifted them into mainstream practice. The encore screening will be followed by a children’s recycled art competition at the Mount Gambier Library. “The Children’s Cave at the Library will have an array of clean, household recyclables for children to turn trash into art,” Ms Leamey said. The children’s creations will be judged by a VIP on Monday, November 25 with prizes awarded in two age group categories.

Thursday at the Portland Library from 5.30pm. Portland Library manager Yvette Parker said Croser was an inspiring local figure. “Helen has won many prizes for her writing, with 18 of her poems professionally produced on a CD and 38 poems in a book titled Home Poems from my Heart,” Ms Parker said. “Helen is recognised for always having a great love of words, having corresponded for ears with countless pen friends and being a prolific reader as a child; a passion that has continued through adult life. “After her three children left home and had families of their own, Helen found time and motivation to share

her many stories. This first novel shares many elements of rural Australian life in the mid-60s, woven into medical and historic tales, with unexpected direction changes along the journey. “Helen’s novel is a must read for anyone who enjoys hearing stories of authentic Australian life. Importantly, this is a story led by one of our local faces which brings it even more relevance.” Accidental Siblings follows the story of Jack Clapper’s untimely death. His son Barry and daughter-in-law Felicity remained under a cloud of suspicion regarding his death. When Barry dies suddenly in a tragic accident, three young people in their early 20s turn up

at the funeral; family connections are made and the mystery of Jack Clappers death is solved in a surprising way. Ms Parker said Helen would provide an overview of how her “love of words” inspired her to start drafting her first novel. “Helen is an extremely talented woman. She has also practiced reflexology, writing for medical magazines and presenting at international conferences on the method. She has also undertaken significant study in writing doing several creative writing courses and a diploma of freelance travel writing and photography,” she said. “This is an event not to miss, that will inspire many to

chase their own literary passion.” Bookings are essential for this free author event, which will include light refreshments. Secure a place by contacting Portland Library on (03)5522 2265.

Learn how Portland local Helen Croser turned her passion for writing short stories and rhyming verse into a first novel at Portland library this week. The former nurse, who forged a career working in Melbourne’s top hospitals working in theatre and supporting premature babies in special car nurseries, traded the fastpaced medical field for a seachange homecoming to follow her love of writing. It was these experiences from her professional life, and inspiration of farming-life in the western district, which formed the storyline for her first novel Accidental Siblings which will be showcased at the author talk this

DETPA GROVE SURGES TO RECORD SALE RESULT In a spring selling season when stud sales have been notoriously sluggish at the best, it became apparent that many in the White Suffolk breed at least, had been waiting for the Detpa Grove sale in particular. Elders stud stock auctioneer Ross Milne stated in the introduction before the stud ram offering, “How does a stud with the reputation for quality that Detpa Grove has, just keep improving, but they have.” Living up to that acclaim, the Pipkorn family’s 31st annual White Suffolk sale produced their best ever overall result, with 229 head of White Suffolk stud and flock rams and stud ewes selling to a $32,000 top and averaging $2067 in a 95% clearance. The 29 catalogued stud rams averaged $6810, with 24 going to registered breeders; the other 5 snapped up by alert flock ram producers. There has only been one higher average in Detpa Grove’s sales history for this draft; that being way back in 2003 when a new national

record of $35,000 was set and two rams exceeded this year’s top. The 149 flock rams also sold exceptionally well, topping at $2600 and averaging $1559. The only time that has been exceeded was two years ago when the flock ram draft averaged $1621. The sale kicked off with the offering of 59 superb quality stud ewes with 54 of these finding new homes, topping at $1600 three times and averaging a very solid $852. There were ten successful bidders on this draft, including two via Auctions Plus. Long term stud supporters of Detpa grove, the Kyle family, Ashley Park stud, Bairnsdale paid the $1600 equal top price on two occasions in putting together a line of seven very good ewes at an $1143 average, later adding the lot 80 stud ram, DG180207 for $6500.. Paula and Elle McDonald, Hopea stud, Dadswell Bridge also went to $1600 for one of six ewes they purchased at a $950 average. The volume buyers though were Nick and Kate Wadlow, Old Ashrose

stud, Hallett, SA who combined a ram delivery trip of their Merinos with calling in to inspect the Detpa Grove sale stock. Suffice to say they were blown away by the quality on offer and were delighted to be able to add 14 of these outstanding ewes to their stud, paying to a top of $1000 and averaging a great value $686. The stud ram offering saw 30 stud breeders from four states and overseas amongst the 77 registered bidders at the sale, plus 55 more registered via the Auctions Plus network. It was the buyer of last year’s $26,000 top priced ram, Roger Wilkinson, Camborn stud, Pooncarrie, NSW and buying through Elders Mildura who struck the first blow when he successfully bid $6000 for DG 180275, sired by the $20,000 (half share) Baringa Magnum 16W300. Used in the Detpa Grove stud as a ram lamb, this was the ram Roger specifically came to buy. However, it was DG 180324 Triplet, offered two lots later that caught

more than just his eye. Sired by AI sire Warburn 160048, a ram purchased in 2017 by the Shillabeer family for $16,000, this ram certainly captured the eyes of many pre-sale. With balance, excellent type, skin and hair, plus exceptional carcase attributes, it didn’t take long for the bidding action to heat right up. Ultimately, it was again Roger Wilkinson who placed the winning $32,000 bid. He was pushed all the way by Clive and Deb Shillabeer who were bidding on behalf of the breed’s only USA registered breeder Gary Heilig, Montana, who started his stud with Detpa Grove ewes and the Shillabeers’ well known ram, Wingamin ‘Trifecta’. Roger was delighted to add this ram to his impressive sire battery. “While I came to get the first ram, when I saw this one I couldn’t let him go,” he said. “Initially, I was going to bid by phone, but thought I should come down and have a proper look, which is just as well, otherwise I wouldn’t have seen how good he is and probably wouldn’t have gone that far without being here.” Of very similar type and by the same sire, plus being not far behind on Lambplan figures with a C+ index of 220 and TCP index of 153 was the very next ram offered, DG 180291. This ram was purchased by William Peck, Bayview Downs stud, Mundulla, SA for the second top price of $25,000. William was the biggest volume ewe buyer at last year’s sale when he purchased 15 ewes. Denam Carter, Ridge Top stud, Albany, WA connected via phone to successfully bid $15,000 for arguably the most appealing ram in the catalogue for phenotype in DG 180729, also used in the stud as a ram lamb. So exceptional was this ram’s early growth that it didn’t fit the Lambplan grids, hence the confusing and somewhat meaningless figures it was given by Lambplan were irrelevant. Western Australian breeders have been a more prominent stud ram buying force in the eastern states than most this year, with three other WA bidders securing new stud sires.

In the 20 specially selected rams and the 129 flock rams that followed the stud ram draft, the commercial prime lamb producers were as strong in their competition as the top stud bidders. There were many familiar names amongst the buyers; giving every indication these Detpa Grove rams are doing a great job in their paddocks. 38 of these topped $2000 while just 23 sold under $1000, the latter ones late in the catalogue. There were 40 successful bidders on these flock rams. Elders Jeparit manager Peter Gebert has been assisting the Pipkorn family at every one of their sales and upon his imminent retirement both David Pipkorn and Aaron Zwar, Elders Warracknabeal paid special tribute to Peter in short speeches before the ram sale. ROAD SAFETY IN FOCUS Road safety and freight efficiency improvements across eastern South Australia have been mapped out in the recently completed Princes Highway Corridor Strategy. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the strategy is a big-picture approach to investment in the corridor, taking into account economic, social and environmental factors. “The Princes Highway is strategically important for freight movements and connecting key regional industries such as tourism, timber, forestry and agriculture to domestic markets and major ports,” Mr McCormack said. “The Australian Government committed $1 billion to the Princes Highway Corridor through the 2019–20 Budget. Currently more than a million people live along the Princes Highway Corridor and the Strategy will support a range of upgrades that will improve safety and reduce travel times, getting Australians across three states who rely on the highway home, sooner and safer. Across the three states, the strategy outlines 14 key initiatives, including transport infrastructure upgrades to improve safety and freight efficiency, creating a safer corridor that supports economic activity.” Member for Barker Tony Pasin MP said the strategy identifies priorities the Princes Highway including: • Bridge widening, strengthening or replacements to accommodate larger, more efficient freight vehicles, including at Murray Bridge and between Kingston and Millicent. • Additional passing opportunities between Mount Gambier and the SA/ Victorian border, between Millicent and Mount Gambier, between Kingston and Tailem Bend and between Millicent and Kingston. • New or improved rest areas between Tailem Bend and the SA/Victorian border, and locations for intersection upgrades at Tailem Bend. • Rehabilitation or resurfacing, between Mount Gambier and Millicent, Millicent and Kingston, Kingston and Meningie and Meningie and Tailem Bend “Improving our roads has been one of my number one priorities and the Princes Highway is arguably one of the most dangerous roads in Barker. It’s great to see a long term strategy completed,” Mr Pasin said. “With this strategy in place, we can now engage with local stakeholders on the planning and design of specific projects. The Federal Government has committed to $200 million for the Princes Highway corridor in South Australia, with the State Government announcing an additional $50 million in the state budget. BIG LIFT IN SUPPORT AT PEPPERTON For Roger and Dianne Trewick, it was particularly heartening to see a greatly improved result at their 5th annual Pepperton ram sale, and third at the wonderful facilities at the Elmore Field Days site. Their offering of the stud’s next generation of elite performance Poll Dorset and White Suffolk genetics saw buyer registrations double from 2018, going up from 14 to 28. With the flow on effect from that greater competition, the top price lifted $600, the average price being up $96 from last year, while most importantly, the clearance lifted by 23%. At sales end, 76 of the 100 rams found new homes, topping at $4600 and averaging $1141. Pepperton’s outstanding Lambplan performance levels, which are well above breed and industry wide averages, are at last getting the recognition they deserve. Every ram offered was above 200 on the Carcase Plus index, while the 64 Poll Dorsets ranked up to 168.5 on the new TCP index and the 38 White Suffolks ranked up to 161. Principals Roger and Dianne Trewick offered 10 (7 Poll Dorsets and 3 White Suffolks) of the very best from this outstanding offering as ‘stud quality elites’ to lead each breed draft. With buyers from four states entering a bidding war for these top elite lots in the catalogue, the sale high of $4600 was achieved for a Poll Dorset ram, while the $4200 top for the pick of the White Suffolks was not far behind. Roger Trewick said they welcomed the improved competition and prices; with the Poll Dorset rams averaging $1077 and the White Suffolks $1228. “That increased demand is a reflection of the current buoyant state of the lamb industry, which has been a great thing for us, and the future of the industry,” Roger said. Max Whyte and Gail Cremasco, Brimfield studs at Kendenup, WA started the sale off on a positive note with a winning $3000 phone bid on the lot 1 Poll Dorset, Pepperton 180115Tw. Besides excellent phenotype, it had outstanding figures across the board culminating in a C+ index of 230, a TCP index of 151.4, and a LEQ index of 143. The $4600 top priced ram at lot 5 was a replacement, Pepperton 180339, a late August drop ram sired by Bruan 170146. The Trewicks originally planned to keep this youngster, but due to the level of pre-sale enquiry, they decided to offer it while retaining a semen interest, and instead retaining the original ram catalogued, P180342Tri by the same sire. Leigh Hartwig from Ivadene stud, Greta who also purchased a stud ram last year teamed up with Craig Wilson, Wagga Wagga, the new owner of the Kentish Downs stud to place the successful bid. “The ram was bought in partnership because this particular animal has the genetic qualities we are both looking for,” Leigh said. He runs a 330-head lifestyle1.net | 26

WORDS & PHOTOS COURTESY OF IAN TURNER - SUPERIOR SELECTIONS stud ewe flock and said he was only interested in premium genetics when purchasing new sires for his stud breeding program. “We produce top quality rams with the capacity to pass on their performance and carcase attributes to commercial breeders enabling them to produce top lambs for trade and export markets.,” he said. “We have top end genetics and the ram we targeted here today is a great genetic outcross for us.” Commercial buyers are the ‘bread & butter’ support that studs need to survive and prosper, and while the tops provided the headlines, the commercial demand was also a significant improvement on last year. Gerard Keogh, Mountain Creek, NSW was back again for the third year, and for the third time in a row was the biggest volume buyer. Once the top end heat went out of the Poll Dorset draft, he purchased 10 high performance Poll Dorsets, paying to a top of $1000 and averaging an outstanding value $840. Matthew Ryan from Colbinabbin, Vic was another strong commercial bidder on the Poll Dorset draft, purchasing 8 to an $1100 top, while averaging $863. The White Suffolks followed the Poll Dorsets and had a star lot to kick off proceedings in the 38 strong draft. It was a partnership between Gemini Prime Lamb Sires at Werneth, Victoria and Bundara Downs at Bordertown, South Australia who paid the $4200 top price for the White Suffolk ram Pepperton 180468, both wanting it for its extreme performance levels and as an exciting outcross for their studs. Gemini’s Craig Mitchell said post sale that he had never been to Pepperton before, but that once he saw the figures of this ram, “I knew I had to get in the car and go and see him”. Craig said the performance data was outstanding. “We were particularly impressed with his meat-eating traits as well as his growth figures, feeling it made him an impressive and slightly different animal,” he said. “He will be a high-performance sire, but only used selectively with ewes handpicked for him. Our plans are to make use of not just his meat traits, but also his low birthweight and high growth rates.”

Like the Poll Dorsets, there was also improved commercial producer demand and with the lesser numbers of these offered, that demand pushed the White Suffolk average up to $1228, $151 above the Poll Dorset average of $1077, and up a massive $354 on last year’s White Suffolk average. While their Poll Dorsets have maintained good and consistent demand, Roger said the growing market for their White Suffolks will see them ringing in changes in the next couple of years, especially in cataloguing more of White Suffolks that have been developed especially for Australian broad acre management conditions. Pepperton sheep have consistently tested high for muscling and growth with moderate fat and lower birthweights, in both their Poll Dorset and White Suffolk studs. The Pepperton Poll Dorsets are part of a gene pool stretching back 76 years to a Dorset Horn stud founded by Roger’s father in 1943. Roger said they now run around 400 Poll Dorset breeding ewes and 150 White Suffolks, aiming to wean between 140per cent and 150 per cent lambing, thus giving great selection pressure. They have a split joining, lambing down half the ewes in April and half in August. He also said that through a disciplined AI program, they continued to fast track the performance profile of the stud. In summarising the sale result, Roger said it rode the wave of industry wide increased demand and prices for sheep meat in domestic and export markets. “We have spent the past 15 years concentrating on sheep rather than grain and I think that is finally starting to pay off.” Above - Pictured with the $4600 top priced Poll Dorset ram at the Pepperton ram sale are Lachie McAlister (Elders), GTSM auctioneer Lincoln McKinley, Pepperton co-principal Dianne Trewick, Rob Martin representing joint purchaser Craig Wilson, Kentish Downs stud, Wagga Wagga, co-principal Roger Trewick (holding the ram), and joint purchaser Leigh Hartwig, Ivadene stud, Greta.

DEADLINE LOOMS FOR COUNCIL GRANT PROGRAM The City of Mount Gambier Sport and Recreation Major Capital Works Program is now open for applications. The aim of the funding program is to foster and assist in the development and capital renewal of sport and recreation infrastructure within the city and is open to sport and recreation groups and organisations within Mount Gambier. An allocation of $70,000 had been made in council’s 2019/2020 budget for distribution as part of this annual program and applications should be for projects with a minimum total project cost of $10,000. The types of projects that will be considered under the funding program include capital renewal of existing infrastructure, capital upgrades, new capital assets or projects which are aimed at increasing the community usage of specific sport or recreation facilities. Last year, council provided South Gambier Netball Club with $27,000 under the Major Capital Works Program to facilitate resurfacing of courts and installation of new shelters (see above). “The South Gambier Netball Club desperately needed to upgrade their courts, as well as courtside facilities, but that is not a cheap exercise and we were so fortunate to be able to tap into the

City of Mount Gambier’s grants program to help us finance the project,” club president Rachel O’Brien said. “We have had so many positive comments from our own members as well as opposition players and supporters about the new courtside shelters and the newly

resurfaced courts and from a safety perspective and player welfare point of view it was such an important project that we would still just be dreaming about if it wasn’t for council’s support.” Preference will be given to applications that demonstrate a high incidence of self-help as evidenced by matching funds or significant in-kind contributions by the organisation. Further information about the program including the program guidelines and application form can be found on council’s website. Applications close on Friday 5pm. SPORT JENNA MCCORMICK MAKES MOST OF MATILDAS CALL UP “It was pretty incredible. I’m still wanting to be out there actually. I’ve got goose bumps just thinking about it.” Those were the clearly emotional words from former Mount Gambier athlete Jenna McCormick after her debut performance for the Matildas in the opening friendly against Chile. The two tie AFLW premiership player with the Crows has always been a soccer star, both in the W-League and in overseas leagues but donning the green and gold was a long held dream came true in Sydney at the weekend. Playing a centre back, McCormick more than held her own in the contest, drawing extensive praise from match commentators before being subbed out late at the 85 minute mark. Read into it what you will but Chile scored in the 89th minute. The 25 year old’s family was in the stands and when McCormick was subbed out, dark glasses aside, those who know mum Lisa, know there were tears of pride, with her daughter not just living out her dream but grabbing the opportunity with both hands. Lisa would have

been wearing her number two playing top but that is still on order. McCormick had a birdseye view of the opening Sam Kerr goal, helping her skipper by denying one of the Chilean defenders a chance to spoil Kerr’s successful shot on goal before the clock hit three minutes played and as the first half wore on, McCormick continued to pass the ball with confidence, with tow of her passes into the box creating genuine chances for the Matildas to score. Former Matilda Kate Gill was calling the match with the ABC’s Breton Speed and both consistently referred to the impact the

debutante was having. “I think Jenna’s done really, really great,” Gill said, while Speed was equally impressed. “The 25 year old (McCormick) has a big future I front of her in Australian colours it today is any indication,” Speed said. McCormick was playing alongside her former Brisbane Roar team mate Clare Polkinghorne which certainly meant she had a level of understanding with her, now Matildas colleague but it was clear McCormick was buoyed by being surrounded by the quality that abounds in the world’s eighth ranked combination. “O worked really hard to get here,” McCormick said. “It did help to have Polks (Polkinghorne) there but I was just happy to share the field with some great players.” Set to line-up with Melbourne Victory when the W-League season kicks off on November 14, McCormick admitted the emotions she had kept in check pre-game would no doubt spill over. “I will go over to my parents soon and probably bawl my eyes out.” The Matildas completed the two game friendly series on Tuesday night in Adelaide.

SOUTH SECURES MERCY VICTORY In Friday night’s Division 1 baseball, South Indians opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with three runs. Lead off batter Ryan Placucci arrived at first after hitting into an error at third base and Ben Nash hit safely to rightfield. Placucci scored on Dean Hamilton’s hit, also to rightfield, followed by Nash who crossed on Travis Lockwood’s hit that created a wild throw from the catcher which subsequently saw Hamilton home. Tigers scored their only run in the top of the fifth. Jesse Foster walked and scored on Tyler Horrigan’s safehit. In the bottom of that inning, Nash found himself at first after a fielder’s choice, Bruce Morale singled and Hamilton drew a walk. Nash crossed on an error at third base and Morale and Hamilton added to the score on Damien O’Dine’s safehit to left field. The Indians mercied Tigers in the seventh when they added five runs. Hamilton singled Lockwood onboard on a fielder’s choice and Hayden Battye singled, Tarkyn Morale picked a base on ball that scored Hamilton and then Hamilton and Lockwood crossed homeplate on another error at third base after a hit from Placucci. Morale crossed on an error at second base while Placucci inflicted the final run on the Tigers defence on a wild pitch. South had nine safehits, five base on ball, four strikeouts, five runs batted

in, left eight runners on base and made one error. All but one of their runs was unearned. Tigers had six safehits, four base on ball, eight strikeouts, one run batted in, left nine runners on base and made five errors. Saturday’s evening game was a much closer affair. Batting first, Federal opened their account with a solitary run when Alex Reppin singled to centrefield and touched home on Sam Shepherd’s two bagger to left-field. Central got off to a flyer when they had their turn to bat. Ethan Chuck singled followed closely by Kyall McClean’s safehit. Chuck scored on Nathan Meinck’s sacrifice fly to leftfield, Dylan Chuck also singled as did Brock Keding whose hit batted in McClean. Koby Chant’s Texas-leaguer scored Chuck, followed by Brad Lynagh’s single to leftfield which saw Keding cross home. In the bottom of the fifth, Dylan Chuck hit safely to rightfield and scored on Koby Chan’s hit into an error at third base. Federal staged a mini comeback in the top of the ninth but unfortunately for them not enough. Sam Shepherd’s safehit saw him at first and Nathan Taylor’s bunt advanced the runner and he got to first base safely. Shepherd scored on Tom Rundle’s single and Clay Carpenter who found himself on base crossed on Darcy Pink’s safehit to centrefield leaving the Demons two runs short of the game

continuing. Central had nine safehits, two walks, four RBI, five strikeouts and left six runners on base. Federal had nine safehits, one walk, three RBI, eight strikeouts, left seven runners on base and made four errors. DODDS ON SONG FOR CONCORDES Concordes White took on Warriors White in the first game of the day and came out of the blocks firing. Safe hits to Anna Livingston, Sam Brown, Linda Dodds and a two RBI double from Jo Hopgood saw Concordes pile on six runs in the first innings to put the pressure on their opposition. Livingston looked confident on the pitching mound for Concordes, and with some solid work in the field was able to hold Warriors to only two base runners and no safe hits in the first two innings to preserve their lead. Concordes added on another two runs in the third with hits to Hopgood, a double to Madelyn Sutherland and another RBI to Livingston to take the lead to eight. Warriors hit back though and consecutive safe hits to Justine Koop, Sarah Polderman and Taylor Wilsmore saw them plate two runs of their own. They chipped away further in the fourth adding another two runs and looked to steal an unlikely victory in the fifth, but Concordes held on with Livingston getting a timely strike out and secured the final out to first to earn her team the win. Linda Dodds also played very well for the victors, with two safehits and four good outfield catches. Concordes United were looking for their second win in a row against Wanderers, and they got off to a good start, making the most of a couple of errors to scored two runs in the first innings. Wanderers responded immediately though, with back to back doubles from Fiona Finch and Em Hart making it two all. The second innings was the decisive one in this game, as Concordes piled on seven runs through safe hits from Codie Jackway, and doubles from Billie Jones and Sarah Pilven. Em Hart tried her best to revive her team with a home run to left field but Concordes were looking good in the field, as Dana Jones pitched accurately, striking out five batters for the game and not conceding a single walk. Sarah Pilven had a standout day with the bat, smashing four safehits. It was an overall team effort from

Concordes that won the day, with eight out of nine batters crossing home plate and only three fielding errors for the match. Belinda Bonney stood out with the bat with three safehits for Wanderers, with Finch and Hart following with two hits apiece, but in the end Concordes pulled away to a comfortable 11-5 victory. It is a family affair for the McKinnons. “I first had a go because my brother Tristan was interested in it,” Bridgette said. “Dad bought a clay thrower and Dad, Tristan and my sister Chelsea would go down to the paddock and have a shot.” That led to the McKinnon siblings being talent identified by locally based elite coach Guy Yoannidis and it has been onwards and upwards from there for Bridgette, in particular. “Guy, who is the father of my brother’s friend Doyle, decided that Doyle, myself, Chelsea and Tristan could make the State team to go to nationals and with him coaching us it all went from there.” Clay shooting has also taken Bridgette’s attention from netball and tennis – the other sports in which she excelled as a junior. “I think the difference is shooting is much more individual,” Bridgette said. “Shooting is a sport anyone can learn and anyone can enjoy, young or old, male or female, it doesn’t matter – this is a sport that does not discriminate.” One of the factors in Bridgette’s favour, as she looks to continue to develop in the sport, is she is eager to learn and happy to train. “I definitely have not mastered shooting yet - I still have a lot to learn.,” she said. “I have always found it an enjoyable sport but it wasn’t until I started shooting the Performance Series events that I could really see where the sport can take you. I have been privileged enough to shoot with the best Australia has to offer at these events and these incredible people have been so supportive and encouraging which is great. The support and guidance that my family and my coach Guy Yoannidis have given me has really allowed to follow the sport this far.” That dedication has seen Bridgette become a regular at State and national championships.

“Last year I was lucky enough to be able to be a filler in the Junior World Cup held in Sydney which, while I wasn’t a competitor, was an incredible experience and my first exposure to international competition,” she said. “While I have had various placings and occasional wins at such events; my biggest accomplishment thus far would have to be beating my personal best qualification score at the recent New South Wales State titles in Sydney. Although I did not place in this event; it was a good result.” Of course, Bridgette is having to juggle training for elite competition with a strenuous study schedule. The former St Martins Lutheran College and Mount Gambier High School student is currently at the University of Adelaide studying a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, having earned her place after initially studying Health and Medical Sciences for a year. “I try to get out to the range to train on Thursdays and Saturdays when I can,” Bridgette said. “These sessions mostly consist of station work followed by full rounds to simulate competition. Uni work and college events sometimes make it difficult to always get out there so when I am unable to make it out to the gun club, I dry-mount at home which helps me practice the full routine that I would normally do stepping onto a station at the club.” For now, consistency as a competitor is what she is looking to achieve. “At the moment my goal is to continue both my shooting and my studies to the best of my ability,” she said. “I would love to make Australian selection for further international events in the future but at the moment my goal is to keep improving my scores and to become consistent enough to place in the Australian Performance Series events.” Above (main) - Bridgette McKinnon in action representing South Australia. ELLIOTT RIDING A HUGE WAVE North Gambier cricketer Elliott Fisher has shown such improvement this season that he has been elevated to the Tigers Barber Shield line-up. In his first season outside of the junior structure in the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association, Elliott is looking to continue to develop his cricket and selection in the Under 18 Western Waves team will also help with that. A regional team in the Victorian cricket pathway, the Western Waves has been a development ground for many Mount Gambier based cricketers and Elliott has certainly taken advantage of those opportunities, adding his Under 18 selection to his two seasons of Under 14 competition and a season in the Under 16 team. Predominantly a batsman, Elliott is in his 10th season of cricket, and like most young cricketers, likes to roll his arm over and bowl a few overs and can also pinch hit as a keeper. The Western Waves is not the only elite pathway cricket the young Tiger has earned selection for, playing at the Country Cup for this region at Under 12, 14 and 16 age groups, as well as playing other representative cricket for Mount Gambier in State and cross border competitions. Elliott is coming off a stellar season in 2018/19 where he took home the O’Donoghue Shield (Under 16) Player of the Year and fielding trophy, in a year where his North Gambier team produced a shock win in the title decider. “One of my cricket highlights was winning that U16 flag as underdogs last season,” Elliott said. “We worked as a team and supported each other to defend a very small total.” And it is certainly that team aspect of the sport that drew Elliott to cricket and has kept him involved. “I enjoy playing with mates and working on individual and team goals,” Elliott said. “I have made some great friends from different places playing representative cricket, particularly when playing for Waves as we all stay together at the Melbourne University campus.

I love being out in the middle and making runs and enjoy the rewards you get for hard work.” With hard work being a hallmark of Elliott’s rise through the cricket ranks. He trains tice a week for his Barber Shield duties, as well as working with the ChappellWhitty Academy, especially in pre-season, as well as tapping into some private coaching seasons in the pre-season. “I would like to see how far I can go, but I’m also thinking of getting into sport coaching and development with a focus on cricket,” he said. In the winter, Elliott plays football, also for North Gambier. Next week we talk to Casterton’s Kaden Humphries who is also part of the Western Waves Under 18 program.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME? Twenty seven year old Western Australian rookie NFL punter Mitch Wishnowsky is having a great season with San Francisco. He has just has become the first 49ers rookie to win the special teams player of the week award since 1994 and San Francisco remains the only undefeated team in the NFL with a perfect 8-0 record (at time of writing).

CRONK SWITCHES CODES NRL premiership winner Cooper Cronk has switched codes and joined AFL team Greater Western Sydney as a leadership consultant after drawing the curtain on his 16 season NRL career. Cronk follows the lead of former Melbourne teammate Billy Slater who has been juggling roles at the Storm and AFL outfit St Kilda since his NRL retirement.

ALL CONQUERING ASHLEIGH Australian triathlete Ashleigh Gentle will be one to watch out for at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics if her record in the Noosa Triathlon is any guide. The 28 year old recently won her record seventh Noosa Triathlon, the past six in a row.

SPORT BACK TO SCHOOL FOR POPULAR HAWK

Drafted in 2013, former Mount Gambier High School student Tim O’Brien headed back to school earlier this month to share his story, skills and what it takes to live out your dream. The Hawthorn utility, who took over the number 23 guernsey that was synonymous with premiership star Buddy Franklin, worked with students from the specialist football program at his former school. “Having a former student come into the school and speak with our current students about their journey into elite sport is an opportunity which doesn’t come around too often,” special sports coordinator Kerran Wingard said. “Tim is such a humble person who gave our students a wonderful insight into his life in the AFL system and the journey he undertook to get there. For our students to have the opportunity to talk with someone from our community who is now establishing themselves on the national stage is tremendous – our students can see the pathways they could potentially follow.” The session provided students with an opportunity to ask questions about what an average week in the life of an AFL footballer looks like, sacrifices needed to play elite sport and training requirements. Football program teacher Stephen Day was also presented with a signed Hawthorn match guernsey from the visiting alumni. O’Brien is a dual premiership player with West Gambier and spent a year with Glenelg kin the SANFL before earning his spot on an AFL list. LONGER DISTANCE TESTS RIDERS

Nick Kidman has brought his winter series form to the spring sereis for the Mount Gambier Cycling Club, recording the fastest time in race four of the spring series. The extended distance of 36km on the Caves Road course, there was certainly opportunity for the handicapped groups to chase the front markers. The limit group was caught just before the 18km turn around by a strong partnership of Scott Noonan and Ash Herrewyn. The pair held off the attacking groups with Noonan pushing home for first, Herrewyn second and Malcolm Tirabassi third. Kidman, who continues to show strong form as a solo scratch rider, caught Robb Mann and Matthew Opperman to record the fastest time. The juniors performed brilliantly with five cyclists, including visiting Port Fairy rider Asher Graham. Elmer Buckland had the fastest time followed by Freya Miller, Molly Opperman, Asher Graham and Eddie Buckland. Race five details will be announced on the club’s Facebook page with Hamilton club members invited to join in.

The Limestone Coast All Abilities program recently held an official uniform handover and sponsors night at the beginning of this month ready for upcoming competitions for the athletes. Steeline, a long time sponsor of the program financed the soccer uniforms and team jackets for all athletes, which were presented in front of family and carers at a function at the Mount Gambier Community RSL. Two more sponsors also came on board with Millicent United Soccer Club and Diverse Transport Fabrications signing on a sleeve sponsors for the team jackets. Athletes have two trips to Adelaide on their schedule this month, with the new sponsors ship helping offset the costs for these trips, which will include athletes from soccer, swimming and athletics. The program is grateful to the support of Ton and Deb Steen (Steeline); Judy Linton (Millicent United Soccer Club) and Davina and Trent Gravestock (Diverse Transport Fabrication) which allows the athletes to pursue their sporting dreams.

MOTOR SPORT NO SHORTAGE OF ACTION THIS BORDERLINE SPEEDWAY SEASON The Borderline Speedway is about to rev into action for its 2019/20 season with national and State titles all part of the program. The engines will spark into action this Friday night with a practice night for licensed and registered drivers across all classes starting at 5.30pm. Club president Cary Jennings is excited about the 2019/20 program with only the unpredictable weather threatening another bumper season on the track. “It looks like it’s going to be a really good year,” Jennings said. The season officially kicks off on November 23 with the jewel in the speedway crown – sprintcars – and with leading locally based drivers Steven Lines and Glen Sutherland already having kickstarted their seasons further afield with some success. “We are looking at around 50 cars for that opening night of sprintcars,” Jennings said. Limited sportsman, junior sedans and classic sedans will be the support classes on opening night. The second meeting is the return of World Series Sprintcars, with reigning champion and locally based driver, Steven Lines, chasing a third WSS title. That meeting is on December 28 when the best of Australian and American drivers go head to head over a number of rounds across the season to take the coveted title. Running for more than 30 years, the WSS racing always attracts a strong crowd and with the Formula 500 also part of the program, the December 28 meeting will be one of the best nights of racing. The New Year will see the first of the State titles being hosted at the Glenburnie track with the 70th Annual SA Speedcar Titles. “Given the Borderline is 60 years old and this is the 70th speedcar titles, you can see they have been around for a long, long time,” Jennings said. The wingless sprints and street stocks will provide support for the State event. The club’s premier event is the King’s Challenge and that will be run on January 23, with junior sedans and super modifieds in support. After a washout in 2019, Lines also enters this event as the reigning champion having taken out the 2018 title. “This will be a great event and we are already aware of around 40 Americans that have already planned to come along to watch the King’s Challenge and the events at Warrnambool and Avalon that feature either side of our main event,” Jennings said. On February 22 another State title will be decided at the Borderline, this time it is the super sedans, with sportsman, junior sedans and classic rods in support. The long weekend in March will see the return of a national championships to the Borderline Speedway with the deciding of the best super sedan driver in Australia. “We are really looking forward to this one,” Jennings said. And the major titles continue with the March 20 and 21 SA Wingless Sprints Title, with March 21 also hosting the All Star 360 Sprintcars before the season rounds out with the April 11 Easter Sprintcar Trail, with rounds also in Warrnambool and Avalon, with super rods and Formula 500 also on the program. “We are always looking to work closely with

Avalon and Warrnambool as the other two main tracks in this region because if people, both competitors and spectators, can travel to an area and go to two or three events in a short space of time it makes it worth their while,” Jennings said. The club is also thrilled to be maintaining its goal of hosting at least one major national title each season, as well as a couple of State titles. In fact, the Borderline has already an upcoming junior sedans national championship. “We have run them before so we are looking forward to it,” Jennings said.
