COVER - LET’S GET TO WORK WITH CARA A new program for school leavers with disability is available in the South East. Leading disability-service provider Cara is offering the School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) program for teenagers who are getting ready to graduate from high school and find their first job. The SLES program, funded for up to two years by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), starts in Year 12 and offers support as school leavers find and maintain a job. Cara Service Manager Kylie Withers says Cara’s staff will work with school leavers, their families and other key people to help jobseekers find their passion and increase skills and confidence. “Cara’s SLES program is about real and practical help so that students with disability can go on to find work they love,” Ms Withers says. “We will work with people one-onone and in group settings so they can get job ready, including supporting them with work experience in local businesses. “Students with disability will get real skills, including transport training, money handling and customer service skills as well as learning about workplace behaviour, numeracy and literacy skills and personal grooming and presentation. “We want the young people we’re working with to discover what they’re passionate about and find real and

meaningful work with local employers – and that means everyone in our community wins!” Cara is a leading South Australian disability service provider, working all over the state and employing more than 1000 staff. “Cara is a not-for-profit organisation, or, as we like to describe ourselves, a profit-for-purpose,” Ms Withers says. “That means that instead of answering to shareholders, we answer to stakeholders – the children and adults with disability whom we work alongside. We reinvest our profits back into our programs so that people with disability live great lives, develop their independence and have fun.” In the South East, Cara offers a range of services which are funded by the NDIS. Children and teens love Kids Club and Camps for Kids. Adults can access Supported Independent Living, which is full time accommodation support, as well as Short Term Accommodation, short breaks on Cara

Getaways or support when and where it’s needed with Home & Community Support. “Everyone at Cara is passionate about working alongside children and adults with disability so they can get the most out of life,” Ms Withers says. “And we’re always looking for values-driven people to come and work with us, so if you’d like a rewarding career in the disability sector, join Cara.” To find out more about Cara, including SLES or any of our supports,

NATIONAL HONOUR FOR LOCAL KEEPSAKE BUSINESS Allison Schleef is heading to Melbourne early next month after being named a national finalist in the 2019 AusMumpreneur Awards. The Mount Gambier based mother runs The Treasured Memory Trove – a business crafting keepsake trinkets in a unique way to celebrate and, in some cases, commemorate, those that mean the most to us. Allison has been shortlisted in the SA Business Excellence category. The AusMumpreneur Awards presented by AusMumpreneur and The Women’s Business School celebrate and recognise Australian mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation. The awards are designed to recognise the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family. Allison started up The Treasured Memory Trove in 2014, taking it to the next level in 2018 when she graduated from the world first Baby Bee Hummingbird Breastmilk and DNA Jewellery Academy to now be internationally accredited. “I capture and recreate those heartfelt precious memories and moments in time with empathy and love.“ Allison said. “Being selected as a finalist means so much to me because never in my wildest dreams did I expect my humble craft to ever be of the

calibre to run against so many other bigger more established professions. I create each custom piece with an integral part of myself – with both my heart and my subconscious soul – and to have that recognized as part of the service I provide is truly phenomenal.” When Allison started out in 2014, she was crafting keepsake trinkets before moving into the even more deeply personal area of breastmilk and DNA jewellery, after purchasing her own breastmilk and first curl beads. She also creates pet memorial pieces from ashes and fur. A married mother to two amazing premmies, qualified chef by trade, a

published author and homeschool educator to her children Allison has a strong focus on raising awareness of mental health, including post natal depression, meningococcal, premature babies and lung cancer - all which she has either experienced personally or through someone very close in her family. Allison started out crafting keepsakes because she wanted to give back to some Neonatal Intensive Care Unit mothers the year after her 28 weeker was born and so she gifted 50 handcrafted glass tile photo pendants to the Flinders Neonatal Unit. “My first Mothers Day was spent

cribside in that NICU with my own baby,” Allison said. “It was both joyful and pained and I wanted other mums to know I had been where they were and felt what they felt, and that they weren’t alone.” When Amy McGlade, of Baby Bee Hummingbirds, floated the inaugural Baby Bee Hummingbird Breastmilk and DNA Jewellery Academy last year, Allison felt it was a natural progression to enrol and expand her business. Allison’s hobby-turned-profession has also offered her that all important balance between family life and running a business. “I love the flexibility it affords,” Allison said. “It allows me to prioritise my little family and work my own hours.“ It can be challenging to run a successful business whilst raising a family and Allison is full of encouragement for others thinking about starting their own enterprise. “If you truly have the passion and the drive to start something new, you are never too old to start over,” she said. The winners of the 2019 AusMumpreneur Awards will be announced at an gala awards dinner at White Night Receptions, in Melbourne, on Friday, September 6.

GETTING CREATIVE WITH TECHNOLOGY Following the success of both adults and high school students over the past five years, the Mount Gambier Library will again host the GovHack Open Data Competition, this year in conjunction with eNVIsion Limestone Coast. The 46 hour event brings people from around Australia and New Zealand together to create new ideas and concepts using open data. Teams work together to come up with an idea on how to make data more accessible and interesting. Concepts generated through the competition include apps, websites, games and art. The competition will run from Friday, September 6 to Sunday, September 8, and will be hosted at eNVIsion Limestone Coast’s headquarters, the Collaborative Learning Centre (CLC) at Mount Gambier High School.

“With the success of previous events and the competition growing, so has our need for space,” Mount Gambier Library youth services coordinator Terasa Nearmy said. “By hosting the event at the Collaborative Learning Centre, participants will have exclusive use of the venue with both Library and eNVIsion Limestone Coast staff assisting participants throughout the weekend.” The competition has two categories, youth (under 18) and adults (over 18) with prizes on offer at local, state and national level. Competitors are supplied with unlimited wireless internet access, mentoring and meals throughout the competition. “This is our sixth year hosting the GovHack Data Competition and we have seen standout success at state

and national level, with participants receiving thousands of dollars in cash, products and further development opportunities,” Ms Nearmy said. “We hope to see even more schools, students and adults taking part this year and hopefully more participants from Mount Gambier scooping up prizes.” A GovHack information night will be held at Mount Gambier High School in the eNVIsion Collaborative Learning Centre this Wednesday, August 14, at 6pm for anyone interested in finding out more about the competition. To register your interest in attending contact the Mount Gambier Library on (08) 8721 2540. “The local GovHack crew will be at the information night to give you an overview of how the competition runs as well as a chance to meet past winners and watch previous entries so if

Successful teams also need people who are great at promotion, storytelling, social media and even art and graphics, With thousands of sets of data to choose from, the idea is to play to your strengths and interests, from environmental issues to tourist spots, from endangered animals through to industry data”. CITY SET TO LIGHT UP Animated projections will light up the Mount Gambier Railway Lands on Friday, August 23, as Illuminart’s Travelling Light show comes to Mount Gambier as part of a grand projection art tour to celebrate the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival. The program of animated projections will be viewable from the Railway Lands, close to the Wehl Street end. The projections will light up fuel tanks and other structures with the distinctive narrative-based projections and will feature animations from across South Australia that connect Mount Gambier to other towns with their shared history. “The dramatic mid-winter show aims to bring people together for a short burst of bright colourful and invigorating creativity, combining history, humour and warmth and celebrating creative storytelling during South Australia’s Living Artists Festival,” Illuminart director Cindi Drennan said. “The free projection event will run for an hour and those wishing to attend are should arrive at 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start. Attendees are welcome to bring chairs and a thermos of whatever will keep you warm.” Illuminart are creative producers who illustrate and illuminate stories using spectacular light and immersion and will tour more than 2000 kilometres in regional South Australia to light up silos and landmarks while sharing locally made animated stories and projection art. In addition to the show, Illuminart will hold a workshop on Saturday, August 24. The workshop will focus on how to create digital art and moving images to teach local creatives how to produce animation for the Main Corner projection wall. “The workshop aims to open new opportunities for local people to create digital media for creativity, local culture and promotion and will cover how digital toolkits can be used to create stunning moving image productions for projection,” Ms Drennan said. The workshop will be held at the media and VR studio at the Riddoch and Main Corner Complex from 10:00am to 1pm and bookings are encouraged as numbers are limited. The workshop is just $15 to attend including light lunch and refreshments and anyone interested should contact The Riddoch and Main Corner Complex to book to avoid disappointment. Travelling Light is the final stage of Illuminart’s Port to Port project assisted by the Australian Government through the Council for the Arts and supported locally by the City of Mount Gambier.

Advertorial • Woodlands Grove & Hallmont Estate

THE PERFECT RETIREMENT DESTINATION In 2001, Vince Versace applied to Mount Gambier City Council to build 15 retirement homes on Woodlands Drive, after he could see that there was a need for these types of homes in the community. The closest retirement village to Mount Gambier was either in Adelaide or Melbourne. From this small beginning, Woodlands Grove was born – with 188 Independent Living Units being built – along with 36 Serviced Apartments within the state-of-the-art Community Centre, that houses an indoor heated swimming pool, bar, restaurant, library, indoor bowling/dance floor, hairdressing salon, kiosk, as well as offices for administration, doctors and a podiatrist. The popularity of the local ‘lifestyle’ village saw an increase in potential residents wishing to make the move to this resort style of living so this called for a new site to be established. Hallmont Estate broke ground in 2008 and has 175 Independent Living Units as well as its own Community Centre and facilities. This year, Woodlands Grove has expanded with another 52 Independent Living Units being built. Between both Estates they now have 450 homes – which is home to approximately 600 people.

Not only have locals of the Limestone Coast made the move to Woodlands Grove and Hallmont, there has also been a surge of people from Adelaide making the seachange, as well as Tasmania, Perth and those moving from over the border from Victoria and other parts of Australia.

What makes our villages so popular? “Cost of homes is important, as is security and lifestyle, we are also seeing a lot of retirees who like the idea of “locking up and leaving” their home to travel, knowing that their home will be secure while they are away. Lifestyle Village living has grown in popularity

lifestyle1.net | 07

amongst those younger retirees, with the only requirement necessary is that you have to be 55 years or older – and you don’t even have to be retired! Making new friends and partaking in new activities enhances your social network and is vitally important for both physical and mental well-being,” said Sales Manager Teena White. “Moving to a community of likeminded people makes the retirement lifestyle at Woodlands Grove and Hallmont enviable compared to those who may feel isolated out in “suburbia”. The sense of security is also a huge draw card,” she said. So, what is next for Woodlands Grove and Hallmont? “Our next phase will firstly encompass providing extra services to assist people to stay in their homes longer. Woodlands Grove serviced apartments will provide extra services for residents needing extra care,” said Village Owner Vince Versace. “Woodlands Grove and Hallmont are serviced by a 24 hour support team and residents are monitored with a pendant and call button for any medical emergencies. “Secondly, it’s envisaged that a nursing home can be incorporated within walking distance of both villages. This will enable residents to stay in close

proximity to Woodlands Grove and Hallmont and therefore continue to be in touch with family and friends,” he continued. “However, this is dependent on the availability of bed licenses and of course government subsidies to fund the higher cost of full aged care.” ”The current aged care royal commission will give us direction in the next 12 months to see if a nursing home can complete the picture at Woodlands Grove and Hallmont,” he said. In the meantime, Vince Versace and the team will continue to do what they do best, provide great homes and a vibrant lifestyle to the Woodlands Grove and Hallmont residents. Lerft - The management team at Woodlands Grove and Hallmont Estate are passionate about the continual welfare and well-being of all residents – and strive to make the process of moving to our Lifestyle Estate’s stress free. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - WE’RE SO ADVANCED… By ROBBIE TANSEL Chinese scientists have been criticised recently for scientific research involving adding a human brain development gene into monkeys. All I could think is, haven’t we already seen how that went with Donald Trump? Wasn’t it better hundreds of years ago when science concentrated on things like phrenology, the science that stated that the size of certain parts of the brain influenced character traits. Or when science had us all convinced that the earth was flat. Or when science came up with some wacky theory called climate change. Science has simply lost the plot in recent years. If they’re wasting time on playing with monkey brains, they’ve clearly lost focus on important things. The recent controversy involving Shayna Jack brought back to me the stupidity of science being involved in sport. Young Miss Jack, who is obviously a talented swimmer, was surely doing fine in her swimming as a youngster. I’m sure she practised diligently and ate healthy food and this progressed her through the ranks from being a champ at her local club, to achieving at a state level and eventually being one of the best in the country, hence being selected for national teams. At some point someone decided

it would be good if she started taking supplements. Hang on a minute. This fit, young, talented athlete needs to take some sort of scientific combination to be a good enough swimmer? I’m confused. Doing her best with practice and eating is not good enough? The young lady needs chemicals? Isn’t sport for the purpose of recreation? People participate in sport for enjoyment, as well as to improve their health and fitness. So why do we need science to get involved? Especially when they apparently get the chemical mix not quite right which is of course the reason that she tests positive to a banned substance. I would think the fact that half the people who test positive to a banned substance subsequently claim that it was a tainted supplement, would be a pretty good reason for athletes to stop taking supplements. It’s also interesting that it often seems to be blamed on not cleaning machinery in the factory and so something accidentally gets into the supplement. If you eat lots of vegetables, you shouldn’t have too many troubles with a steroid that always coincidentally improves performance or hides the presence of banned drugs. I wonder if when they purchase their supplements the packaging has warnings on them that say “May contain traces of illegal performance enhancing substances”. It seems that we take warning people about the

possibility of peanuts more seriously than banned substances. Some AFL players and other athletes who have been getting calf blood injections to deal with injuries, is another great example of sports science. At what point does an adult human being say, “You want to inject blood from another animal into my body? That sounds like a good idea. And perfectly normal.” Obviously sports science is bringing

about dramatically improved results for sports people though. Right? Apart from the fact people keep on accidentally taking banned substances. Well actually, if you take the AFL as an example, clubs and players are losing more games to injury than ever before. CHANNELLING YOUR INNER BLOCKHEAD

JOIN THE FIRE PIT REVOLUTION With the official start of spring almost upon us, the days are gradually getting longer, and while it certainly hasn't yet, the weather should eventually warm up and the outdoor entertaining season will soon be upon us. To make better use of your yard this year, why not invest in a fire pit, designed to heat up crisp evenings, aesthetically enhance garden areas, provide a welcoming gathering place for friends and family, and bring an element of sophisticated fun to your social life. From simple rustic metal designs to more innovative and artistic options, manufacturers have created a ranges that fuse style, function and convenience, and make for a standout addition to any outdoors. Fire pit designs have evolved to reflect a wider range of facades, even carrying through interior themes.

This is particularly important if your outdoor space is a part of the view from your indoor living area, or acts as an extension to the social space. If chosen wisely, a fire pit that aligns with your home’s look doesn’t need to be lit to be a benefit. As a focal point for entertaining all year round, select one that carries your indoor interior style outside. Portable firepits can also be a smart choice. Fire pits offer an instant, cosy spot for every occasion and are ideal for use year round. In the summer months, toast marshmallows under the stars after a delicious BBQ, or wrap yourself in a warm, thick blanket and enjoy with friends for the ultimate outdoor gathering point in the cooler months. Whether it is a stand-alone focal point, or safely positioned in the middle of your outdoor seating, your fire pit won’t go unused, and will extend your social space, year round.

Many of us have either just recovered from a series of House Rules or are gearing up for the latest instalment of The Block and either way, we are all starting to look at our own homes and thinking about what we could do oursleves to update or improve our living spaces. Of course, we don't always have the bidget of a netbwork television program so here are some tips for a more budget friendly makeover. TOP TIPS 1. Update any room with a fresh coat of paint - One of the most tried and true budget home renovations is a fresh coat of paint. Paint is fairly inexpensive and is simple to apply. A different colour paint can help change any room without breaking the bank. 2. Install crown molding - This is a great way to add value to a home and increase the overall aesthetic appeal. The process is relatively simple and only requires some carefully cut angles and the patience of installation. There are also nonwood, crown molding options that are even more affordable. 3. Refinish kitchen cabinets - By sanding down the cabinets and applying a new finish, homeowners can achieve the look and feel of a completely new set without the purchase. 4. Rearrange your furniture - A room can feel completely different even with the same furniture when it has been moved around to different spots. You can do this with furniture from other rooms as well. This essentially costs nothing, yet can bring the feel of a complete remodel. 6. Replace cheaper household accessories - Changing the smaller accessories throughout your home is a great way to renovate with a tight budget. For example, cushions are littered throughout most homes on couches, beds, and chairs. 7. Hang up homemade art or photos - Instead of investing in expensive mirrors or other accessories, consider hanging some of your own work. This could come in the form of a personal painting or photograph. It’s a great way to make your rooms feel more personalised while also saving money in the long run. 8. Install some new lighting - Lighting is also a very affordable factor to change. You can opt for a brighter or dimmer setting depending on how you want the room to feel. Colour is another option when it comes to changing the lighting in a room. Small colour accents can help give a room a cooler or warmer feel depending on the shade.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COURSES ON OFFER Following the popularity of the Mental Health First Aid courses run in Mount Gambier the South East Junction is looking to set up similar programs in Millicent. IN THE GARDEN With spring just around the corner and buds starting to burst it’s time to finish all those end of winter gardening jobs. All pruning of roses, deciduous trees and fruit trees should be well underway, if not finished, and it is important to make sure you have applied a winter spray of lime sulphur straight after pruning to clean up any overwintering pests and diseases on roses that are not in leaf, fruit trees and ornamental trees. Also on the important list is copper sprays (Liquid Copper in now available too) for stone fruit trees, such as peaches and nectarines, to avoid the attack of peach leaf curl, sometimes called curly leaf. If you had it last season you will definitely need to spray for it now as it does not go away if left untreated. Our sprayers have been going all day today as I write before the rain again, and we have also applied about another five doses to ensure all buds emerging at different intervals knock it on the head so ensure you do a few sprays, especially with all the rain we have had . This is going to be more prevalent this year with the continuous rain in recent days when you only have that critical window in which to spray at

By Calum Haygarth Landscape Architect & Horticultural Consultant “bud swell” and finding dry days to get sprays on is hard. All you can do is try your best. Recent releases of the new curly leaf free peaches and nectarines have been a boon for home gardeners and now is the time to invest in an easy care tree if you are struggling to control the leaf curl and this spring we will release a new range of curl leaf free ornamental flowering peaches also, so keep an eye out for them. The time for planting dormant deciduous bare rooted trees and fruit trees is also drawing to a close. Stone fruit and almonds and apricots are bursting into life so this week should be the last opportunity to plant these from bare rooted trees. With our massive winter sale on too this is a good time time to grab a bargain. Potted trees are available all year round from places such as Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, so there is not the panic that there used to be in days gone by and often older, more mature trees are available too, so you aren’t missing out on fruiting time, but sometimes its still good to get them in with all the lovely rain to settle them in. Now is also the time to be applying the first of the season’s fertilisers and

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS

Cuban picadillo 1/2 cup white quinoa, rinsed 1 chicken stock cube, crumbled 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 brown onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 500g turkey mince 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cumin Pinch ground cloves 2 ripe tomatoes, finely chopped 400g bottle tomato passata

1 red capsicum, finely chopped 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 dried bay leaves 1/4 cup raisins 400g can red kidney beans, drained, rinsed 1/3 cup pitted green olives, sliced 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh coriander leaves 4 chargrilled corn cobs, to serve Sour cream, to serve

Method Bring quinoa, stock cube and 1 cup water to the boil in a saucepan over high heat. Reduce heat to low. Cook, covered, for 15 minutes or until quinoa is tender. Stand, covered, for 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until softened. Increase heat to medium-high. Add mince. Cook, breaking up mince with a wooden spoon, for 6 to 8 minutes or until browned. Add cinnamon, cumin and cloves. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until fragrant. Add tomato, passata, capsicum, vinegar, bay leaves, raisins, beans, olives and ½ cup water. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low. Simmer, uncovered, for 15 to 20 minutes or until thickened. Sprinkle with coriander. Serve with corn and sour cream.

with all this lovely rain should be easily washed in. This should be applied around the drip line of mature trees and fruit trees and around 30cm out from the base of roses. At Limestone Coast Roses they have been having fantastic results with a new rose fertiliser that came on to the market a few years ago. It is now available to the home gardener as it was used mainly by us professional growers in the past. It has higher amounts of potash, so important for disease prevention and colour and quantity of blooms plus being coated with iron which is an added bonus in our predominantly alkaline soils, should make your roses the glossiest they have ever been. The staff at Limestone Coast Roses are always eager to help with any enquiries you may have with regard to pruning roses and feeding, as all staff are fully versed on roses. The deciduous magnolias are looking great at the moment around the region and bursting forth with their goblet shaped blooms on the bare branches. Look out for specials such as 25% off all of these at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, including one of my favourites, the sought after Black Tulip and Yulan varieties and the new fairy magnolia as well. The three new varieties released recently - Genie, Cleopatra and Cameo have also been very popular with Genie being a dwarf version of Black Tulip, so ideal for smaller gardens or pots and an earlier flowering variety. Come in for a look at their stunning display and grab a bargain at the same time. Most of the bare rooted, deciduous, ornamental trees are selling out and as they burst back in to life we they will have to be withdrawn them from sale for potting on. The national shortage of Lilacs, Cornus and a few of the new range of dwarf fruit trees has meant our stocks have been really depleted through Limestone Coast Advanced Trees Online Nursery that sends trees all over Australia, with local people missing out. To prevent that from happening move fast for the End of Winter Sale on now and bag a bargain at the same time! We have over produced on ornamental pear tree varieties this season at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees in Mount Gambier so the Boss has said clear them out or we have to burn them!! These over productions happen from time to time where we have good grafting success and we grade them rigorously when they come

from the paddock to maintain the quality of our Trees . We still have good stocks along of our exclusive evergreen variety Wintergreen which is ideal for screening and hedging and one that we sold out of early last year meaning a lot of people missed out. Claret Ash, nut trees, Lipstick maples, Chinese cedars and many other trees are all reduced to clear as we ready ourselves for spring. End of season specials on mop top trees including Mop Top Catalpa reduced with heavy reductions on Mop Robinias at two for $139.90 or $79.95 each - stocks are limited and at these prices they will sell fast. Seed potato and raspberry planting time is also upon us with good stocks of potatoes to keep to plant later or plant and early crop now. Even the national shortage of Pontiacs has not affected us but do get in soon as we are down to our last 50kg or so and is of course the biggest seller for us as we are renown in the region for our seed potatoes and low pricing. Weeping flowering cherries, massive cut leaf London Plane trees (see facing page) are all reduced to clear (see advert adjacent page) so don’t leave planting too long, make the most of the great rain to settle everything in. The Pot Shop at Gardenarium in Mount Gambier caters for unusual gardening orientated gifts, wall art, gardening tools, oil drum animals from Africa and we have one Aussie Ute at ½ price for Fathers Day, a pretty cool esky for dad to wheel out full of coldies! (ideal for Father’s Day) and cast iron

fire pits in several sizes, ideal anytime of the year to warm up the outdoor living areas and of course outdoor furniture from all corners of the globe. Some stunning new solid mahogany birdhouses and dovecotes in limited numbers are also available. Normally this is not the time of year we think about purchasing outdoor furniture but they have a few specials on benches, arches and table and chair settings to clear to make way for the new season’s stock coming through and at these prices you won’t want to miss out. See advert or website for details. Gardenarium is situated at 167, Bay Road (Riddoch Hwy) 1.3 kms south of the Blue Lake roundabout or punch 167, Bay Road Mount Gambier into your GPS. See website for maps and details. From Portland, come via Nelson and turn left into Kilsby Road just after the Princess Margaret Rose signs to the right . BIANCA TOPS A STRONG FIELD Mount Gambier’s Bianca Howley has been named the winner of the Safety Award at leading disability service provider Cara’s 2019 Recognition of Excellence Awards. Held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, Cara’s Recognition of Excellence Awards celebrate the passion and professionalism of staff by recognising Cara’s best and brightest talent. Bianca, a Cara team leader in Mount Gambier, won the Safety Award for her commitment to keeping Cara’s customers – children and adults with disability - safe. Bianca’s initiatives have included supporting her Home & Community Support customers to prepare evacuation plans and teaching them what to do in an emergency situation so they can safely evacuate their home if they do not have staff rostered to support them. Cara’s Chief Executive Liz Cohen said that Bianca was a worthy recipient of the Safety Award, which was sponsored by CMI Toyota. “It was clear from Bianca’s nomination that she really goes above and beyond to keep her customers safe,” Ms Cohen said. “She has also displayed a commitment to promoting safety amongst her team to ensure the wellbeing of all of her customers and colleagues in Mount Gambier. It is because of the high calibre of staff, such as Bianca, that Cara can continue with our most important work – working alongside children and adults with disability. The quality of the nominations that we received for our awards was very strong, so to be named

a winner is a real honour. Bianca should feel very proud of her achievements in helping her customers to find possible in their lives.” Bianca said she was proud to receive the award for her commitment to safe practices. “It is such an honour to be appreciated in this way and it has been a very humbling experience to be recognised and appreciated for my efforts towards my work,” Ms Howley said. “I thoroughly enjoy my job and the difference it makes to others. Safety is paramount in providing a quality service to our customers and to ensure

our staff are safe at work and in their day-to-day lives.” All winners of the Awards receive a $1000 cash prize, $1500 towards training or personal development related to their work at Cara, and a hand-crafted Jam Factory glass trophy. “I am looking forward to putting the training to use on some courses to further my knowledge on disability support and leadership and hopefully attend some further workshops on autism,” Ms Howley said. TURNING BACK TIME In a South Australian exclusive, the Riddoch Art Gallery will present the awardwinning exhibition Ancient Rome: The Empire that Shaped the World. Created by renowned Italian artisans Niccolai – Teknoart Snc (Firenze) and Artisans of Florence, responsible for the remarkable Da Vinci exhibition, Ancient Rome will include more than 200 exhibits including artefacts, catapults, frescoes, armour, weapons and busts painstakingly reconstructed from ancient roman records. To celebrate the launch of the exhibition, The Riddoch and Main Corner Complex are hosting a cocktail gala event in true roman style this Friday from 6.30pm at City Hall. Featuring exclusive guided tours of the exhibition, a roman inspired menu by Metro Bakery and Café, local wines from Caroline Hills Winery and roman themed musical compositions by local quintet Cumpas, it will be a night of all things Rome, according to Riddoch Art Gallery director Dr Melentie Pandilovski. “Embracing the roman tradition of feasting and entertainment, this event will also give attendees an exclusive preview of an exhibition that celebrates all the great milestones of Ancient Roman civilisation,” he said.

“What better way to enjoy an exclusive opening for an exciting and ambitious exhibition than with wine, food and music. Come along and enjoy a wonderful evening.” Tickets for the VIP exclusive preview and gala cocktail event are limited and available for $65 from The Riddoch and Main Corner Complex. “From war machines to aqueducts, this exhibition has all the highlights of an incredibly advanced culture. You’ll be amazed to discover many of the things we use today were a product of roman ingenuity,” Dr Pandilovski said.

Ancient Rome: The Empire That Shaped the World exhibition will be on display to the public from Saturday to Sunday, November 10, at The Riddoch and Main Corner Complex, 1 Bay Road Mount Gambier. The Mount Gambier Library has done it again – coming up with an innovative new feature for the state-of-the-art facility. Read and Ride is the new kid on the block with the installation of two spin bikes overlooking the Cave Gardens. They are silent, incredibly comfortable and come complete with all the features of a regular exercise bike, as well as a sturdy tray table perfect for laptops, newspapers, magazines and books. The bikes were officially unveiled last week with city history buff Jim Galpin, Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin, Pioneers Tom Daly and Pachis Roberts and library staff all giving the new bikes a go. ABC Radio presenter Selina Green also went above and beyond, doing her two hour show while pedalling away, while ABC news journalist read her bulletins in the saddle as well. In fact, it was a tongue in cheek tagging of a post from Selina that basically kickstarted the bike project. “There was a library in Western Australia using them and Selina basically tagged the library in a post almost as a joke and I thought it was a great idea,” team leader library programs Kristi Leamey said. So Kristi made a call to the library and before she knew it the wheels were set in motion. “They had one for staff and one for customers but I thought we can’t keep one just for ourselves,” Kristi said. The bikes are lightweight and on wheels, so easy to manoeuvre around the library space, and they are suitable for all fitness levels – from people that never do exercise to gym junkies. “It is a way for the library to be looking after people’s physical and mental health at the same time,” Kristi said. The bikes did 30km on day one and the library will continue to monitor their usage, not ruling out the addition of more bikes and, if required, a booking system. “We have already had plenty of enquiries from surrounding businesses with people wanting to take advantage of the bikes during their lunch break and the other day we had an elderly couple cycling together – they had some inside because they couldn’t do their usual walk in the rail lands,” Kristi said.

Fundraising opportunities and other events loom as possibilities as well as word of the new innovation spreads. “It was a good sign how many people wanted to give it a go once the ABC microphones had left,” Kristi said. The bikes are located in the alcove where the magazines are located where you can enjoy the floor to ceiling views of the Cave Garden while reading, working at your laptop or using your e-resources. Above (main photo) - Jim Galpin tests the new spin bikes in the library with ABC presenter Selina Green. Above (from top) - Pioneer Tom Daly; Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin & Pioneer Pachis Roberts try out the Mount Gambier Library’s new bikes.

FITNESS, FUN & TOURISM IN THE SPOTLIGHT A pump track will be constructed at Hastings Cunningham Reserve later this year. Swiss based company Velosolutions will work with the City of Mount Gambier to deliver the $150,000 project, which includes the right to host at least two Red Bull Pump Track World Championship qualifying meetings locally. A pump track is a circuit typically about a quarter of the size of a BMX track, designed to be ridden without pedalling. Riders gain momentum by ‘pumping’ - using up and down body movements on the terrain transitions of the track - instead of pushing or pedalling as would occur on a traditional BMX or cycling track. “Council has received numerous requests for a facility of this type as part of consultation for the Youth Engagement Strategy and the State Government ‘Fund My Neighbourhood’ program,” Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin said. “We’ve also had requests from individual ratepayers, so we know the community will embrace this concept and we are so excited to get started on this project.” The track will be designed to encourage community spirit, learning and promote an active outdoor lifestyle for all. “Velosolutions is a global leader in pump track and trail building and has constructed more than 45 pump tracks all over the world,” Cr Ben Hood said. “The durable all weather facility will be accessible for first time riders and kids while still providing a challenge for more experienced riders. It will be built on the edge of the Hastings Cunningham Reserve and means families and young people will be able to access the pump track on their bikes and scooters via the rail trail corridor.” Mount Gambier Mountain Bike Club president Andrew Jones and club member Nick Brooks lobbied council to consider the initiative in recent years

and feel the track will provide a point of difference for the city. “A pump track will be a great asset to our community as it has a broad reach,” Mr Brooks said. “Essentially, you can use anything with wheels on a pump track and its suitable for all ages including young kids on scooters, older teenagers on BMX bikes and it’s something parents can participate in too.” Council aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the community through the provision of activity based recreational infrastructure. In a time that obesity is at the forefront, this is a gateway for people to get involved in a fun activity. A pump track bridges the gap between a skate park and a BMX track and enables easy access for people to get involved. Mountain bike and cycle tourism is a growing sector nationally and internationally. A dedicated track will provide Mount Gambier with an opportunity to build on its strengths as a cycling destination and provide economic benefit to the city. “This project is a great opportunity for the city as Velosolutions are the exclusive designer and builders of

pump tracks that form part of the Red Bull Pump Track World Championship,” Cr Hood said. “The Mount Gambier pump track will be promoted on the global platform pumptrack.com This will be the first championship course in Australia, which could provide major tourism and economic benefits to the city.” Mount Gambier Mountain Bike Club president Andrew Jones said Mount Gambier was not on the map for this type of activity, but it soon would be. “There are only a handful of the Red Bull Pump Track World Championship qualifying meetings and events internationally, so it’s a real win for our community,” he said. As part of the construction process, three international pump track experts and two experienced Australian trail builders will be on site to supervise the construction of the track and develop the raw shape including the fill, gravel and asphalt paving. The track will be constructed during the fourth quarter of this year. Further information about the project can be found at www. haveyoursaymountgambier.com.au/ pump-track Above - Mount Gambier Mountain Bike Club president Andrew Jones (left), club member Nick Brooks with Mayor Lynette Martin OAM and councillors Ben Hood, Sonya Mezinec and Frank Morello on site at Hastings Cunningham Reserve where the pump track will be built later this year. MAGPIE SWOOPING SEASON IS HERE It’s magpie swooping season so be prepared. The best way to avoid being swooped is to change your route, but if that’s not possible, here’s some tactics to avoid being swooped: • Travel in groups as swooping birds usually only target individuals. • Carry an open umbrella above your head. • Wear sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat. • If you ride a bike, walk it through magpie territory or have a flag on the back of the bike that is higher than your head. • Do not act aggressively. If you wave your arms about or shout, the magpies will see you as a threat to the nest – and not just this year, but for up to five years to come. • Walk, don’t run • Avoid making eye contact with the birds. lifestyle1.net | 27

NEW SHEEPVENTION FORMAT A SUCCESS The Sheepvention Committee was absolutely delighted with the response to the new three day format which debuted earleir this month. Families and day trippers embraced Sunday with a fantastic crowd streaming through the gates at 10am. The new Careers Trail was really well supported on Tuesday and the junior judging entries were exceptional. Overall this was the biggest Sheepvention we have ever had, the feedback from traders has been very positive so far.” The committee had worked incredibly

hard on the new format and were delighted with the results from the customer surveys which rated the event experience, on average),nine out of ten. “You can’t really expect much more than that,” Mr Kinghorn said. “Clearly it was a great experience for our patrons and our exhibitors which is exactly what we had planned for.” Fun Facts Sheepvention 2019 • 602 trade sites • 1045 sheep were shown • 143 dog trial runs • 10,112 coffees were sold • 1.18 tonnes of potatoes were consumed • 3400 lamb burgers and pies were sold • 18 tonnes of straw was used (which will be recycled as garden mulch) • 160 tonnes of woodchips were distributed to trade sites (which will be recycled as garden mulch) • The models walked 36kms on the catwalk during Sheepvention fashion parades • $913,130 worth of rams sold • 4568 children participated in more than twenty children’s activities • The top priced ram auctioned for $35,000 with a private sale topping $51,000

Vegetarian buffalo balls 2 (about 350g) sebago potatoes 200g paneer, crumbled 2 teaspoons dried oregano Pinch of ground white pepper 30g butter, melted 1/4 cup Hot Sauce

Peanut oil, for deep-frying Thinly sliced celery, to serve BLUE CHEESE DIP 80g blue cheese, crumbled 80ml (1/3 cup) crème fraîche 70g (1/4 cup) mayonnaise 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Method Cook the potatoes in a large saucepan of boiling water for 20 minutes or until very tender. Drain and rinse under cold water until cool enough to handle. Peel away the skin and coarsely grate the flesh. Transfer to a bowl and add the paneer, oregano and white pepper. Season well with salt. Roll 1 tablespoonful of mixture into a ball. Transfer to a tray lined with baking paper. Repeat with the remaining mixture. For the blue cheese dip, combine the cheese, crème fraîche, mayonnaise and lemon juice in a bowl, keeping the blue cheese lumpy. Cover and set aside. Combine the melted butter and hot sauce in a heatproof bowl. Pour enough oil into a saucepan or wok to come one-third of the way up the side. Heat over high heat until the temperature reaches 160°C on a cook’s thermometer. Cook the buffalo balls, in batches, turning, for 4 minutes or until golden. Transfer to the bowl with the butter and sauce mixture and toss to coat. Serve the balls with the blue cheese dip and celery sticks.

A GRAND WEEK FOR MILLICENT WATERING HOLE The Grand Hotel in Millicent was in the national spotlight last week after being announced as one of six country pubs to receive a $50,000 grant as part of Airbnb’s The Country Pub Project. The windfall saw the Millicent pub visited by Channel Nine’s Today Show, with weatherman Steve Jacobs spending time at the watering hole last Friday, speaking to newly installed publican Andrew Palmer and Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll, among a slew of other locals. The Country Pub Project was an initiative designed to encourage more Australians to explore regional communities by putting country pubs and the towns they’re located in back on the map. Launched in June, publicans and locals were encouraged to nominate their favourite watering hole by describing what makes their pub so special, and how an Airbnb grant could help revitalise the pub, ultimately helping to attract more visitors. The community response was overwhelming, with more than 9000 nominations received during the application process – 7000 of which came from the public who nominated their favourite local. Originally offering five grants, given the response, Airbnb expanded the project to award six pubs grants of $50,000 each. Aside from the Grant Hotel, the other recipients were Royal Hotel – Sofala, New South Wales; Imperial Hotel – Ravenswood, Queensland; The Royal Standard Hotel – Toora, Victoria; Bischoff Hotel – Waratah, Tasmania and The Woolshed Hotel – Nungarin, Western Australia. Part of The Grand Hotel’s charm is the anecdotal evidence it is one of the most haunted hotels in the country. Publican Andrew Palmer also has the claim to fame of being the least experienced of the six publicans honoured, with this being his first foray into the pub game. Airbnb spokesperson Brent Thomas said he’s thrilled there’s been so much enthusiasm for the Country Pub Project. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the huge volume of applications received, which is a clear sign of how important these establishments are to regional towns,” he said. “Country pubs are often the beating heart within local communities; they bring people together and help create a sense of belonging, something which is core to Airbnb’s mission.” The grants are earmarked for revamping accommodation and common areas such as hallways, bathrooms and bedrooms. The works will be overseen by a dedicated project manager, who will use local suppliers and tradespeople. The six victorious pubs will also be paired with a nearby Airbnb host to provide tips and tricks for listing their pub on the platform to gain maximum exposure to international and domestic guests. “The pubs we’ve selected are among the most loved in Australia, but they need a bit of TLC to help them attract more visitors,” Mr Thomas said. “We’re so excited to start working with this wonderful group of publicans and hope that through this process, they’ll be able to attract new waves of pub goers who will spend their precious tourist dollars not only in the pubs but in and around the communities they operate in.”

DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR BASKETBALLER

The Federal Government has also thrown its support behind the Country Pub Project, with Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack, endorsing the regional tourism initiative. “Like a kitchen table brings a family together, country pubs unite the community, so this initiative is a great opportunity to put regional communities at the forefront of people’s minds as they plan their trips,” he said. “Many regional hotels are family owned, some for generations – and we want to see more Australians get out of the big cities to explore some of the best watering holes across this great land and experience the finest country hospitality with an overnight stay at one of these pubs. It’s time we put regional Australia back on the map as a destination for Australians and visitors and inject some muchneeded tourism into these communities who have been doing it particularly tough with the drought.” Above - Publican Andrew Palmer outside The Grand Hotel, In Millicent. It has been a whirlwind couple of months for former Mount Gambier basketballer Isabella Stratford as the 17 year old takes two giant strides in her basketball career. Isabella has a college offer on the table, fulfilling a childhood dream to secure a sting at US College, as well as being signed as one of two development players for WNBL franchise, the Bendigo Spirit. It was two years ago that Isabella had a breakout year, exploding onto the national scene after building a strong body or work representing SA Country at a range of national events. It saw the former Tenison Woods College student make the move to Adelaide halfway through her Year 10 studies, heading to Immanuel College. “When I made the Under 17 national team, I needed to be training in Adelaide so that was why I made the move,” Isabella said. “That was when my basketball really started to take off.” Isabella remembers first having her dream of a college opportunity as a Year 6 and her recent offer was 12 months in the making, sending off countless emails with her highlights reel, as well as chatting with a raft of coaches. “Ironically, the college that finally made me an offer wasn’t one of the colleges I had emailed,” Isabella said. “But what tends to happen is all the coaches over there talk to each other and work together. They might not be looking for a guard but will tell another college that is and send my information through.” And that’s how Isabella’s offer from California State University, Fullerton, came about and once they made contact, the process was surprisingly quick. “I had a phone call from the assistant coach, who is an Australian and had seen me play at nationals, and then two days later the head coach called and offered me a contract on the spot in that phone call.” Isabella has verbally agreed to take up this exciting opportunity and is visiting the campus in the coming school holidays. “It all sounds basically perfect but I will go over and check it out and then if I am still keen, I will sign the letter of intent and it will be official,” Isabella said. The campus is 15 minutes from Disneyland and 45 minutes from Los Angeles. Hot on the heels of the college offer, Isabella has received a further boost to her continued development as a basketballer with being signed as a development player with the Bendigo Spirit. Head coach Tracy York has been a key figure in Isabella’s meteoric basketball rise in the past three seasons, having coached Isabella’s school team, that finished second in the 2018 national competition, as well as luring the talented guard from Eastern Mavericks to Southern Tigers in the Premier League this year, where Isabella posted the impressive season stats of averaging 11 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. “Tracy (York) has been amazing for me,” Isabella said. “She has been the one who has given me so many amazing opportunities and this is just another one.”

lifestyle1.net | 31

And Isabella’s mentor is also looking forward to continue working with the young guard. “Isabella comes to Bendigo after having a break out year in the SA Premier League,” York said. “At 17 years old she is an athletic taller guard type, who is versatile and with great ability to get to the basket. We look forward to Bella continuing to develop her game and be an important part of our squad.” A squad that Isabella can’t wait to join and starting working with, given the calibre of player, including a handful of Opals, that she will be training alongside. “It will just be great to play basketball every day but also to test myself against the best players in the country and learn from them and I look forward to seeing how it develops my own game,” Isabella said. Initially the move to Bendigo, which she will be making at the end of this month, will be challenging for the Year 12 student as she looks to wrap up her schooling. She is set to homestay with a family and will compete her remaining assignments from Bendigo, before returning to sit her exams. “I am hopeful it will not impact too much,” Isabella said. The opportunity to be part of an elite program like the Bendigo Spirit program will also be a great lead in for Isabella, who is she formally accepts Cal State’s offer will be headed to the United States this time next year.

BRAVE PIONEERS SEASON COMES TO AN END

JAM PACKED 200 GAMES FOR YOUNG DEMON Yet to turn 18, South Gambier’s Imogen Walker hit a major milestone at the weekend, playing her 200th game for the Demons. And despite only being 17 there is barely a role she has not filled at the club – she is a multi-premiership player, and has umpired and coached and she has been the consummate club player, twice playing out of age group to help the club offer extra spots in her own age group to ensure as many players as possible are getting a game. She played in her 13 & Under premiership as a mid courter, her 17 & under premiership as a goal attack and, last season, showed her true versatility in the nail biting one goal preliminary final loss in the 17 & under competition as a circle defender. She has multiple individual accolades and has already snared a club best & fairest in the A Grade line-up, a team she has been part of now for five seasons. Imogen has also represented the club proudly at representative level and has been part of five SA Country Championship winning teams – twice at 15 & Under level, twice as a 17 & Under player and this season in her debut season in the A Grade competition. Hard working, with a strong take and good court smarts, Imogen has been one of the best stories to come out of Blue Lake Sports Park in the past decade.

It was another typically gritty performance from the OneFortyOne Pioneers women in the weekend’s preliminary final but after so often getting the better of the scoreboard in these tight contests all season, the girls are out of the title race, going down to Forestville by two points in the Premier League preliminary final. In the end, it was arguably the depth of what was primarily an inexperienced squad, that proved the difference, the Eagles having the value of 15 points from its bench, while the Pioneers starting five were the only players to hit the scoreboard., with Maddy Wormald, Amanda Frost, Pachis Roberts and Emily Winter playing all 40 minutes of the tense final. The pleasing thing about the opening quarter was the fact, all five players who started on the pine hit the scoreboard for the Pioneers, including a perfect record from the charity stripe – a place where the girls spent much of the night as the Eagles ensured the Pioneers were constantly under physical pressure with ball in hand. The Pioneers trailed by four points at the first break and the Eagles continued to hold sway in the second. Halfway through the period, Gabriella Vidmar hit a stunning three that saw the lead hit double figures for this first time in the match, but as they have all season, the Pioneers fought back and when Melissa Russell hit a two with a minute to play in the half it was back to a three point game. The third quarter was eerily similar to the second with the eagles again having the better of the early going and when Chelsea Roberts scored a layup and the resulting bonus free throw, the Eagles enjoyed a game high 12 point lead with just under three minutes on the clock but again, with skipper lifestyle1.net | 32

Amanda Frost leading the way, the Pioneers hit back and at the final change it was a one point ball game. With six minutes to play, Frost hit a basket that saw the Pioneers regain the lead for the first time since Russell scored the opening basket of the game. It was then an arm wrestle of epic proportions, with neither side scoring for the next two and a half minutes as both the Pioneers and Eagles tried to gain the ascendancy from beyond the arc but the threes just wouldn’t drop. It was a pressure cooked final quarter with scoring at a premium but the Eagles were in front when it counted – the final buzzer – 62-60. The Pioneers did have a chance to tie up the contest but the shot wouldn’t drop and then the basket that did drop was just a second too late with the Eagles advancing to take on Sturt for the 2019 championship. Forestville will also play off in the men’s final, after withstanding a stunning final quarter comeback from Norwood. Leading by 18 going into the final quarter, the Eagles coughed up 33 points to the Flames, but held on for a four point victory, earning the right to take on the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers. LOCAL SPORT STATE FOOTBALL SUCCESS He is modelling his game on Patrick Cripps, Scott Pendlebury and Patrick Dangerfield and it is a case of so far, so good with Jake Walker just retuning from the 15 & Under Schoolboys National Football Championships with a silver medal as part of the South Australian team. Having easily accounted for New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT in the pool matches, things got tougher in the cross over games, narrowly defeating Western Australia to earn a place in the title decider against a strong Victorian line-up. In the end, the sluggish start from SA cost them any chance of gold. Trailing by 24 points at half time, they only lost the second half by a point and while the pool matches were easy, the two final games were a real test. “Once we came up against Western Australia and Victoria, basically the football states, it was really tough competition – a real step up from what you play on weekends with your club,” Jake said. Already a premiership player for South Gambier and having already clinched some individual silverware with a league best & fairest under his belt, Jake usually spends his time in the heat of the action on ball but at the national championships, he enjoyed the freedom of the wing, developing his disposal skills, rather than worrying about winning the ball himself. “It was a nice change – basically I just love playing in the midfield, wherever it is,” Jake said. His football journey started as an eight year old at Blue Lake Sports Park in the Under 12 competition and he has played ever since, also representing his school in Knockout Competition, as well as a multitude of representative teams

for Western Border and Glenelg. A passionate Collingwood supporter, Jake was also part of the Crows Academy this season. Former Central District player Matthew Slade coached the silver medal winning State team, that competed in the Tasmanian hosted national championships, and Jake said it was good to learn from a different coach and someone who has played in the SANFL. He was also fortunate his coach was happy for Jake to juggle his SA Country basketball commitments which ran side by side, from a training perspective, for much of the past few months.

ACCREDITATION FOR TALENTED TIGER North Gambier’s Lauren Westhorpe has become the first umpire this season to secure her C Grade umpiring badge. Also an A Reserve player for her club in the Western Border Netball Association, Lauren has been concentrating more seriously on her umpiring for the past two seasons, including a number of A Grade gigs, and she passed her practical testing with flying colours this month. She is looking to continue her umpire training and aim for a B Grade accreditation in the not too distant future.

NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HARD WORK The harder you work the better you get is certainly the mantra of Steve Smith. After dominating the First Test against England details have again emerged of Smith’s fanatical training regime: marathon net sessions –including on scheduled rest days when the other players have their feet up- and even having his wife involved pumping cricket balls into a bowling machine for hours on end. The ultimate reward for effort story.

SWIMMERS CONTINUE UPSKILLING PROGRAM

THE VALUE OF DEFENCE English Premier League defender Harry Maguire has made history by moving from Leicester to Manchester United for a world record $144million (Australian). While big money transfers are not uncommon in EPL I found it particularly interesting that the record amount is going to a defender as opposed to a more glamorous midfielder or striker.

Another successful intensive training clinic was held for local swimmers earlier this month which enabled them to build on the skills developed in July’s clinic. The clinics were made possible through funding from the Mount Gambier Junior Sports Assistance Fund, provided by the City of Mount Gambier. Eighteen swimmers from Mount Gambier Swimming Club, Blue Lake Y Swim Club and surrounds, spent more than two hours in the water with silver license coach Vivienne Kennedy. The young athletes, ranging in age from nine years old to 17 years old focused on dives, turns and stroke techniques, to enhance their performance. Very positive feedback was given to the swimmers

in reference to their swimming over the weekend, many of whom had competed successfully in a local meet hosted by Warrnambool Swimming Club in Hamilton the day before. Swimmers also attended two dryland sessions as part of the program for the training clinic. As part of these sessions the swimmers were challenged in a Pilates class where they had to focus on core and glute exercises, which are of great benefit to the swimmers improving their stability, posture and strength in the water. At another dryland session, swimmers discussed mental skills and setting goals. Swimmers looked at the seven steps to successful goal setting and each considered

their own individual goals for the summer season ahead. This combination of dryland training and swimming techniques will be applied to the swimmers training and into their competition. For several of the swimmers that attended the clinic over the weekend they will look forward to attending the Victorian Country Short Course Championships later this month in Ballarat. PAY DAY VERSUS PATRIOTISM It’s fair to say that the USA men’s basketball team for the 2019 World Cup lacks star power. Only the most diehard NBA fans would recognise any of the players in the recently released team photo. It’s not surprising given the amount of money the best players in the world earn so why would they risk injury, and their earning capacity, playing for their country. It will be interesting to see if their absence extends to the Olympics. Of course, Australia’s highest profile player Ben Simmons has also withdrawn. Makes a mockery of the early promotional poster (pictured) for The Australia V USA game later this month

LOCAL SPORT KIDMAN CONTINUES SOLID WINTER SERIES FORM

Despite a lack of sunshine, the conditions for Race 6 of the Mount Gambier Cycling Club Winter Road Series, an individual time trial, were favourable. The time trial was contested on the Overland Road, at Glencoe. An increasing number of members are enjoying the variety of race formats that the winter series has been offering and Race 6 was an exciting opportunity to test out specialised time trial bikes,

and for riders to face the challenge of maintaining speed over the 20km course. The competitors were separated by one minute intervals, with the faster riders having the incentive of catching those who started in front. ACADEMY PROGRAM ENDS WITH CARNIVAL SUCCESS

The South East Junior NetballAcademy finished their commitments for the season earlier this month by playing in the Murray Bridge Carnival. The Academy entered three teams into the carnival and had many close matches throughout the day.

The 15 & Under Division 1 team went through undefeated on the day and won their Grand Final defeating the Cove Tigers 17 – 12. The 15 & Under Division 2 team also had a great day going through undefeated to go down in the grand final to a very

tall Pedare side. The young Under 13 side played very well against older opponents throughout the day. The academy coaches, Sarah Makin, Sarah Faulkner and Donna Denton, were all very pleased with the progress of the girls throughout the program. They played extremely well at the Murray Bridge event as all teams were placed in higher divisions to ensure that they played against taller and stronger opponents. The 31 academy members were from the Western Border, Mid South East, Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara and Mount Gambier Netball Associations. 2019 SOUTH EAST JUNIOR NETBALL ACADEMY PLAYERS WESTERN BORDER Abby Denton (Millicent); Annelise Janssen (Millicent); Charlotte Scott (West Gambier); Aleisha Pearson (West Gambier); Lauren Van Eeden (Millicent); Daisy Tunkin (Millicent); Paige Exelby (South Gambier); Macey Griffith (North Gambier); Ellie Easterby (Millicent); Edie Easterby (Millicent); Cara Nulty (North Gambier); Poppy Venn (Millicent); Zarlee Jones (North Gambier) MID SOUTH EAST Dakota Hateley (Hatherleigh); Lillie Paul (Hatherleigh); Tori Haines (Hatherleigh); Libby Yeo (Robe); Ruby Schubert (Robe); Indi Howell (Hatherleigh); Bridie McPherson (Port MacDonnell);Sophie Wrightson (Kalangadoo) KOWREE NARACOORTE TATIARA Tess Porter (Penola); Maisie Hicks (Bordertown); Eliza Mock (Mundulla); Andrea Fuentes (Bordertown); Rose Pfitzner (Border Districts); Sophie Makin (Keith); Macy Llewellyn (Keith); Alice Drabsch (Kingston); Meg McAuley (Keith)
