HAWKE’S LEGACY TO LIVE ON Member for Barker Tony Pasin has welcomed the announcement that the Coalition Government will provide $750,000 to purchase and renovate the childhood home of former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, to protect its heritage value and commemorate his life and achievements. Robert James Lee Hawke was born in 1929 at Hawke House in Bordertown, South Australia. Member for Barker Tony Pasin said the conservation of Hawke House was important for Australia’s heritage and democratic history as well as creating a huge opportunity for the community of Bordertown. “The acquisition and preservation of Bob Hawke’s early childhood home at Bordertown will help to underscore the important role the township of Bordertown and the broader Tatiara played in shaping the extraordinary Australian that Bob Hawke became, Mr Pasin said. “Very few Australian’s readily associate Bob Hawke with Bordertown or indeed South Australia despite the formative role South Australia and Bordertown played in his life. This acquisition presents an amazing opportunity for the community of Bordertown to create an iconic facility that will celebrate Bob Hawke’s life and educate visitors regarding the significant role he played in the formation of post war Australia. Hawke House will add to the homes of former Prime Ministers already preserved for the nation, including Ben Chifley’s home in Bathurst; John Curtin’s home in Cottesloe; and Joe and Enid
MILLICENT MOTOCROSS RIDER BACK IN CHINA Millicent freestyle motocross rider Josh Burdon is headed overseas again, this time for a four month contract in Beijing. It is the third time Burdon has been seconded to China to be part of the popular motocross circuit. With 120 shows to perform over the next few months, Josh put a scare through everyone in his final preparations, crashing in his final practice session, knocking himself out and requiring an ambulance to transport him to hospital. Cleared of any broken bones but missing a reasonable amount of skin and having put a tooth through his lip, Josh, although battered and bruised, has still flown to China. Putting his latest crash into perspective, Burdon visited close friend Nathan Foote in Adelaide before flying out to Beijing. Nathan, who will never walk again courtesy of his own serious crash, is undergoing rehabilitation at Adelaide’s Hampstead Centre, and Josh wanted to check in before heading off on his latest adventure. Nathan and his partner Shelly are expecting their first child next month and watch this space for some upcoming fundraising opportunities for the young family. Josh has recently been buoyed by Gordon Refrigeration signing on for a fifth year as the Factory FMX major sponsor, with Brad Tilley and Cockys Signs also continuing their sponsorship of the freestyle motocross star.
Lyons’s family homes in Stanley and Devonport. The Australian Government will now work with the local Bordertown community and the National Trust of South Australia to upgrade Hawke House and ensure its heritage value is protected so all Australians can understand and celebrate the Bob Hawke story. Five million will also be provided to the existing endowment fund of The General Sir John Monash Foundation to create an annual scholarship known as the Bob Hawke John Monash Scholar. The scholars, chosen by the Foundation, will study in any field deemed in the interests of the nation. The aim will be to support, for up to three years, talented young Australians with ability and leadership potential to develop their skills at leading overseas universities.

Paul Chuck has just returned from Cambodia following his fourth visit to the poverty stricken country, providing school uniforms, supplies and food for remote villagers. It is now a regular trip on Paul’s calendar, having first headed to Cambodia to visit former Mount Gambier based friend Ken Thompson, , and being sideswiped by poverty like he had never before experienced. That visit has sparked the three subsequent visits – each time with plenty of much needed goods for the locals. Paul headed to Cambodia on this most recent trip with Dee and Nevyn Wilson and this time the big ticket item, so to speak, was bikes, along with the usual clothing and rice. They returned to the same orphanage Paul had visited the
previous visit and he said it was like a true homecoming. “Not only do I recognise the kids from our previous visits but they remember you as well,” he said. “Every time we go to Cambodia you can’t help but be affected by the poverty and it never gets easier and yet it is also so rewarding because of the gratitude they show for what are very small, simple gifts that we take.” One of the orphanages at the centre of their week long visit caters for around 30 children and they were able to drop off five bikes. “They then have four or five children on each bike,” Paul said. “It is amazing to watch. They love it. Can you imagine kids here having to share a bike? They are just great kids.” The donated bikes were restored
second hand bikes from Japan and China. Of course, the rice was just as important a gift. “The orphanage doesn’t have enough rice to even feed everyone so getting those extra bags from us was such a great help,” Paul said. “We couldn’t do any of this without the generous support of the Mount Gambier community, both businesses and individuals, and that has been a big part of us being able to regularly visit Cambodia and play a small part in helping these villages. It is so hard to comprehend that rice is basically what they have for every meal and there is no meat or vegetables – it is just rice with maybe some spice if they are lucky. It is a different world and you cannot help but be affected by how they have to
live.” Any ongoing donations of children’s summer clothing, and toys in good conditions would be greatly appreciated and you can contact Paul at paul@gebhardts.com.au to find out how you can help or to drop off a donation.

BENEFITS OF WINTER GARDENING
THINKING OUTSIDE THE SQUARE Just like inside your house, outdoors, you also need practical but stylish storage - here are some simple ideas to get the job done at your place. BENCH STORAGE Dual purpose - our favourite kind of storage. A bench seat not only gives you extra room for guests to sit when you are entertaining outside but it provides invisible storage. It's a great spot to store things that need to stay dry, you can line the interior with waterproofed marine ply, or items can be put into plastic water-tight containers and placed inside. GREEN SCREEN Sometimes the storage is already there but it does nothing to add to the ambience of the outdoor area enter the hugely popular green screen. Consider growing climbing plants against the walls of your storage shed or
hang a series of planters and create a makeshift vertical garden to create a striking visual contrast. A green wall or fence is also a great way to conceal your bins. PLANTER STORAGE Yes we use planter boxes to help to keep plants organised and looking pretty, but they're also a surprisingly great spot for additional storage. Raised planter boxes can come with pre-built cupboards below or additional shelves, making them the perfect spot for additional storage. VERTICAL STORAGE Think vertically when it comes to all kinds of storage both indoors and outdoors. Hang floating shelves into walls for easy display of plants and small gardening tools, or consider building a shelving unit instead.

INTERIOR DESIGN FOR RECREATION CENTRE IN THE SPOTLIGHT The City of Mount Gambier continues to refine the internal design features of the Community and Recreation Hub with architects CO-OP Studio and DesignInc. Detailed design options for the sports court flooring and aquatics facilities are currently being considered. Community and Recreation Hub Community Reference Group (CRG) members met with elected members and council officers earlier this month for an update on the project. It follows prework conducted by a team of technical specialists on site at Olympic Park on Margaret Street. Mount Gambier Mahyor Lynette Martin said constant changes in technology and innovation meant new options were emerging all the time and new information provided by the technical team had resulted in discussions about the options available for the structure of the pools. “There is a new type of construction that is now being used in many pool projects known as Myrtha stainless steel and the architects have evaluated this against a concrete option,” Mayor Martin said. Tender specifications will include options for both the Myrtha stainless steel and concrete pool structures in the interests of securing best value for money through both construction and whole of life costs. Preferred flooring options for the court areas are being considered, with two options compliant with Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) standards. The internal design of the facility will
be modified to allow for the inclusion of two kitchens, one on each floor. “We have received feedback from the community about the desire for highly functional kitchen spaces within the facility so this has enabled us to consider multiple options as we move forward with finalising the internal design and costings,” Mayor Martin said. “I look forward to the Regional Sport and Recreation Committee, the CRG, Elected Members and Council Officers working closely together to provide a facility that will benefit the whole community.” The Regional Sport and Recreation Centre Committee has extended the opportunity for the community to suggest a new name for the complex. Name ideas can be submitted to the
Community and Recreation Hub naming boxes located at the Civic Centre, Library and Main Corner Complex as well as online. Further information and updates on the project are available at: http:// www.haveyoursaymountgambier.com. au/CaRH and interested persons can now subscribe to a newsletter via the Have Your Say site. Spaghetti Bolognese 500g Cook with Curtis Italian Recipe Beef & Pork Mince 500g jar tomato pasta sauce 300g spaghetti
Method Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add mince and cook, stirring to break up lumps, for 3 mins or until cooked through. Add pasta sauce and ½ cup (125ml) water. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10 mins or until sauce thickens slightly. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to the boil over high heat. Add the spaghetti and cook, stirring often, for 8 mins or until tender but still firm to the bite. Drain, reserving ½ cup (125ml) of the cooking liquid. Add the spaghetti to the sauce and toss to coat, adding enough reserved cooking liquid to moisten mixture as needed. Season with salt and pepper. Top with parmesan and parsley.

Get your thinking caps on and consider the best original name for the shire’s newest Southern Right Whale as part of a new online competition. The Portland Visitor Information Centre has launched the ‘Name that Whale’ competition via the Whalemail Facebook page, inviting community members during the month of July to pull out all creative stops to name a new whale for the region. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank described the competition as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to name one of the shire’s most iconic visitors. Community members have until 5pm, Thursday, August 1. “The whale has some very distinguishing features so it can be easily identified, is has large white patches on its neck and belly and it is missing the tips of both tail flukes,” Mayor Rank said. “This is a huge honour and lifetime bragging rights for the selected winner who will be able to be one of the very few people who can claim the title of officially naming one of the ocean’s most majestic creatures. The winner of the selected entry will also receive a Portland Harbour Tours voucher, offering four free places to complete a tour of the world’s largest
export facility of woodchip with exclusive access to shipping berths and the commercial fishing fleet.” Previous whale naming competitions have seen regular visitors ‘Kisme’ and most recently ‘Badu’ added to the official identification register as Portland Whales. The successful entrant will be announced via the Whalemail Facebook page. The winning name will be selected by the Portland Visitor Information Centre team in conjunction with DELWP to ensure the winning name is appropriate and not previously lifestyle1.net | 23

STRONG PARTNERSHIP FACILITATES TREE PLANTING OneFortyOne, Tenison Woods College and Noel Barr Toyota are together strengthening their partnerships, for this year’s National Schools Tree Day on Friday, July 26. Tenison Woods College students are excited to ‘get their hands dirty’ and plant trees in OneFortyOne’s local pine forest plantations. This event raises awareness of a sustainable future, giving students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local forestry industry, with a hands-on approach to mark the importance of this event. This year local native plants will also be planted, to better represent both the importance of native trees, but to honour the importance of the local forestry industry within our community and being a sustainable resource into the future. Tenison Woods College principal David Mezinec said this event was well received by students last year, and they were very excited to take part again in 2019. “We are very fortunate to have this wonderful partnership with OneFortyOne and Noel Barr Toyota, to not only give our students a real-world experience where they can actively participate, but to incorporate their learnings into positive sustainable choices for their future,” Mr Mezinec said. Local Toyota dealership Noel Barr Toyota is represented through the national partnership, but at a local level, supporting students by providing them with Tree Day shirts and gloves. Noel Barr Toyota sales manager Adam Salmon said Noel Barr Toyota had a long
standing association with National Tree Day and was proud to continue to partner with Tenison Woods College & OneFortyOne. “It’s always a fantastic day that gives the students of Tenison Woods College the opportunity to work together to contribute positively to create a better environment for future generations while connecting with nature,” Mr Salmon said. “The day also aligns positively to Toyota’s corporate goal of achieving a sustainable future via a zero environmental impact by the year 2050.” Whilst OneFortyOne protects more than 3000 hectares of native forest patches within its commercial pine estate, the team wanted to teach the children that the Green Triangle forests not only protect the environment, but they also store carbon, provide local jobs, are a really great place to find a ghost mushroom and generally just reconnect with nature. OneFortyOne Pioneer, Linda Cotterill said sustainable forestry had been the backbone of the Green Triangle for 100 years, and they wanted to help inspire the next generation of trailblazers to feel the same passion about this industry as we do, keeping it sustainable for the next

Program. LCLGA program coordinator Alis Auld said. the program was designed to overcome barriers that similar city-based programs present in terms of costs for travel and accommodation, time away from work, and lack of regional context and networking opportunities. “We have had a fantastic and diverse group this year, who have committed to building their own leadership capacity while developing networks of skilled and motivated people who can support each other to take on roles and projects for the benefit of the regions community and economy,” Ms Auld said. The prograsm has been made possible through the generous support of key partners Australian Government Building Better Regions Fund, the State Government, LCLGA and Regional Development Association Limestone Coast. Scholarships are also made available through the support of regional business, industry and council leaders who recognise the value inthe program. The scholarships offer emerging leaders the opportunity to participate in the program without the impact of financial barriers. Business, industry and community organisations are invited to partner in this community capacity building program through sponsorship or scholarships, with further information available from program coordinator Ali Auld at leadership@lclga.sa.gov.au The scholarship partners for the 2020 program are L.V. 40 YEAR CAMPIAGN ENDS WITH WORLD HERITAGE LISTING The protection of one of Australia’s most important indigenous cultural sites has been secured for generations to come following last week’s historic UNESCO World Heritage listing. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the inscription of the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, announced this afternoon by the United Nation’s governing body in Baku, positions the site as the first listed exclusively in Australia for its Aboriginal cultural value. “Budj Bim will forever be etched in the nation’s storybook because of this history making decision,” Cr Rank said. “It is an important step in protecting the cultural heritage of this unique landscape, ensuring the storytelling of the Gunditjmara people is embedded in our history … in the nation’s history, for generations to come. DAIRY INDUSTRY CAREERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT Students and teachers from across the Mount Gambier region were recognised last month at the Cows Create Careers – Farm Module Presentation Day. As the culmination of the project 150 excited students and teachers from nine schools attended the high-energy event to conclude the Mount Gambier region program. Students participated in industry-based games and prizes were awarded to the project’s winning teams. Millicent High School, Penola High School, Lucindale Area School, Compton Primary School, Kingston Community School, Allendale East Area School, Glencoe Central Primary School, Kongorong Primary School and St Martins Lutheran College took part in the program. Over three weeks the students completed the innovative Dairy Australia project that aims to increase the awareness of dairy industry careers in a very hands-on way with students rearing and caring for two three-weekold calves at their school. A local dairy farmer teaches the students how to care for the calves, while an industry advocate visits the students to speak about their career in the dairy industry. Students are required
to form teams to complete assessments based on the dairy industry. Cows Create Careers was originally established in 2004 with dairy farmers in the Strzelecki Lions Club in Victoria and nine Gippsland schools. Since 2006 the project has been supported by Dairy Australia, Regional Development Programs, dairy farmers and sponsors. It has now grown to 259 schools across Australia with 14,245 students completing the project in 2018. Sally Roberts, Lead – People at Dairy Australia said that the project
has received strong support from dairy farmers and advocates across Australia. Last year alone 535 volunteers gave 2675 hours of their time across 23 Australian dairying regions. Locally, the project is funded by DairySA and receives additional support across the state from local companies Maxum Animal Nutrition, SA Dairy Industry Fund, La Casa Del Formaggio, Laucke Mills, Total Result Ag Consulting, District Council of Grant, Beachport Liquid Minerals, Beston Global Food Company, Dasco, Daviesway, Skellerup and Peach Teats who have continued
to support the project in the Mount Gambier SA region. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE WRONG… By ROBBIE TANSEL I read with disappointment recently about a mother who was arrested for hitting her son. “How can I be disappointed?” you may ask. Well quite simply, the little boy deserved it. The rest of the story is that the boy’s grandma, the mother’s mother, was using the little boy as her lookout while she shoplifted. He didn’t do a good job, obviously, because grandma got busted. You can see it now as well, right. Clearly the little boy deserved a punishment. Now, to be completely honest, I’m not a fan of violence and I don’t think hitting your children is appropriate. Having said that, I think that every now and then they need a good shake. That’s still a joke. Domestic violence is wrong. Non-domestic violence is wrong, for that matter. The point is, you simply can’t rely on kids these days. They let you down. Here is a poor old lady, trying to steal a loaf of bread and little Jimmy has forgotten the bird noise he was meant to make to alert grandma that a staff member is approaching. “Was it a canary or a budgie?” Grandma is completely innocent in
this situation and the unfortunate victim but will be going to jail. Jimmy, the cause of the problem, is getting away Scott free. Still feeling sorry for Jimmy now? Now I can hear all you do-gooders out there saying, “Jimmy shouldn’t have been pulled into this mess in the first place. He’s just a kid.” Once again, this is the problem with the world today. We ask very little of kids, and they consistently deliver. What would Jimmy have been doing if he wasn’t helping Grandma out with the shopping? No doubt, he would have been sitting at home playing computer games. You tell me which one of these two activities is the more useful contribution to society. Exactly. It’s not like Grandma was asking him to clean his bedroom or wash his hair without screaming like he’s dying when he gets shampoo in his eyes. Simply whistle three times if a staff member heads in her direction. Back in the day, Jimmy would have lifestyle1.net | 29
been expected to get a job. If he was lucky he would have been working on the family farm. If not he may have been down a mine or sweeping chimneys or a slave of some kind. These days there is no expectation that Jimmy will contribute anything to his family. I bet there was outrage from the political correctness police. I’ve told my boys Shaquille (aged 10) and Lebron (aged 7) that I expect them to get their lives together and go and get a job. “What job can we get? We’re just kids?”they say in that annoying, whiney voice that kids have. I have presented them with a number of options. I suggested catalogue model, even though they are both kind of weird looking. Shaquille has red hair and Lebron is freckly and has skin as white as paper. That should not be such an impediment anymore because catalogues are actively trying to have all different looking people in them now, rather than just pretty people. Although I’m not sure I’ve seen any redheads, now that I think about it. Another suggestion I had was go and get yourself a reality show. That’s all the rage these days. Having said that, they’ll probably need to broaden their daily activities from passing gas and giggling about it. No
forget that. That’s more talent than the Kardashians. I did suggest professional sports. Once again they had a very negative response. “We’re too young,” they grizzled in that whiney voice again. If they were in East Germany, they’d be in a damp gymnasium being beaten with sticks and pumped with mystery substances (horse steroids) until they were Olympic gymnastics. Again, this is frowned upon in our enlightened, modern world. But it got results. I told my kids, I was contributing to the Tansel family business from an early age. And it wasn’t just petty shoplifting either. As a small kid, I was very useful crawling through small spaces on break and enter jobs. When I hit puberty, Mum decided that I had the perfect mix of recklessness and unpredictability to drive the getaway car. Not once did Mum or Dad get caught due to my incompetence. You can’t rely on kids in that way today. What’s the difference today? Kids have no fear that they’re going to get a hiding. Anyway, if you have a job for a weird ten year old or a hyperactive seven year old, with no talents or redeeming features of any kind, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

YOUTH APPEARS WASTED ON THE YOUNG Youth, enthusiasm and being hailed the next prodigy doesn’t appear to be an advantage at Wimbledon on the men’s side. Since 2002 only four players have won the men’s singles title and, at the time of going to print, it looks likely the status quo will be maintained in 2019 with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic all in the mix. Nobody under the age of 28 even made it to the quarter finals.

16 & UNDER TOWERING TALENT There is a new fan favourite in the NBA. Tacko Fall, who stands at 231cm,is taking the NBA’s Summer League tournament by storm. Fall landed on the Boston Celtics Summer League roster and with an incredible 2.5m wingspan and a 3m standing reach he’s an imposing figure. The photo above says it all. The two Cleveland Cavaliers players next to him both stand at 193cm. NO END IN SIGHT Record-breaking Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith became the first person in the history of the NRL to play 400 games at the weekend. What makes the milestone even more special for Smith is the fact that all those games have come at the one club.
SOUTH EAST VETERANS GOLF Forty-five players went to Lucindale and most scored reasonably well at the most recent South East Golf Veterans event. A visitor came from Nhill for the day and enjoyed it. Terry Chant took out First Division with 38 points, ending his long drought with Vets, Tony McGregor ran second with 36 and Ian Regnier had 35 points to deny Brian Thomson in the countback. Second Division was another Millicent identity, Herman VanDerHeul with 35, from Rob “Tangles” Cece 34, and Peter Bateman on 33. The NTPs went to Steve Von Duve on the third and Brian Thomson on the 16th. The ball rundown was at 26 or better and the Ross Orchard was shared by Russ Lingham and Peter Varcoe. It’s official. The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers men and the OneFortyOne Mount Gambier Pioneers women are in the 2019 Premier League playoffs. The men won a topsy turvy contest with Forestville to secure top spot – a double edged sword for the team who will now not play a game in anger for 20 days courtesy of a final round bye and then earning the bye the first week of the play-offs because they have topped the ladder. The boys did it the hard way, though, trailling by nine points at the final change, the Pioneers turned it on in the last, winning the quarter 37-15 to secure a 13 point victory. For the women, it was a nailbiting affair and if you are a sentimental sports fan, the match was bookended by locally born and bred former WNBL player Melissa Russell – who scored the opening two points for the Pioneers women and showed nerves of steel to convert the winning lay up that ensured the girls are also play-off bound. To beat the, then top ranked, Eagles was an astonishing effort by a women’s program that has defied expectations under rookie coach Matt Sutton. The girls are still playing the waiting game, though, and could finish anywhere from top to fifth, depending on the results this weekend. Of course the final minor round home game for the season was not just a celebration of the two teams on court but also of head coach Richard Hill who coached his 200th game for the Mount Gambier club. Club president Tom Kosch said Hill’s influence was about so much more than the winloss record and championship success. “I think we all focus on the winning record, along with the championships and success our teams have
had since Richard arrived but it has been about instilling an attitude of fierce competitiveness and our focus has been largely putting together teams that share equal responsibility for all players,” Kosch said. “It has not necessarily been about the individual, in fact, it is not at all about the individual but actually about sharing the load. He believes everyone is equal and the ball is distributed and shared amongst all the players and from an on court perspective you can’t deny that approach has given us the success we have had. His legacy will be instilling a very unselfish and loyal culture to the club and ensuring everyone has a strong commitment to the basketball club.” The club has also benefitted from Hill’s tenure as an unofficial full time coach that has given plenty of his own time to work one on one with all players on the Pioneers roster to further develop their skills. “Young players know if they come to Mount Gambier they will improve and develop their basketball,” Kosch said. “Richard’s commitment to the development of the players has always been first and foremost at the front of his mind. His investment in every single one of his players has been enormous and he has been particularly committed to developing the young talent from Mount Gambier and he’s been able to do that, players like Kane De Wit, Brad Rathjen, Dellon Brown and Matt Black.” And with the minor round done, Kosch also wanted to take the opportunity to thank the Mount Gambier community. “Everyone knows the story of where we’ve come from, it has been a rocky year,” Kosch said. “But there is no doubt the community has embraced the women’s program

as well as the men’s program. Matt Sutton and the women’s team have done an outstanding job and it is so good to see them in the finals. We have been astounded by the support received and the amount of people that have come to the Icehouse from our first home game and they have been there to support every Pioneers game, both women and men. It has been unbelievable and we can only thank them for their support.” The club is currently focussed on the 2019 Premier League play-offs while off court, club heavyweights are continuing to pursue opportunities in the NBL1, as well as maintaining a strong working relationship with Basketball SA. JUNIOR TITLE DECIDED The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association conducted its junior singles championship earlier this month. The association had all of its four juniors nominate in the championship that was played at the Mount Gambier Bowls Club. The competitors played a round robin format which was played under the Australian Indoor Bias Bowls Council ruling, which meant the players played three games of 21 ends and used four bowls. The Junior Championship is supported and sponsored by association life member Marie Pedlar. At the last minute, Nicola Bowditch had to withdraw from the competition due to a netball injury. It was RSL & District player Tru Franklin who reversed last year’s result and was the eventual winner. Colby Muller, from Yahl, howed he has a lot of potential taking out the runner up prize. The rookie from Moorak Red, Sophie Cary, gained valuable experience from competing in her first championship. Tru Franklin, Colby Muller & Nicola Bowditch will now focus on the 50th Australian Indoor Bias Bowls National Championships to be held from August 27 to 31 in Mount Gambier at the Icehouse. All three will
be playing junior singles for South Australia. Above - Junior championship competitors Sophie Cary, runner up Colby Muller and 2019 champion Tru Franklin

LOCALS IN ACTION AT UNDER 16 NATIONALS

There was a strong South East presence at last week’s Under 16 National Basketball Championships in Darwin with six players with strong local connections representing SA Country at the week long event. From left - Mount Gambier’s Tara Bryant, Alyssa Duncan, Rori Perryman, Sarah Ritter, Jake Walker & Penola’s Georgia Winter. All five Mount Gambier athletes were recipients of funding from the Mount Gambier JUnior Sports Assistance Fund.
HIGH PERFORMANCE SESSION BENEFITS SWIMMERS & COACHES After receiving funding from the Mt Gambier Junior Sports Assistance Fund both Mount Gambier and Blue Lake Y swimmers were given the opportunity to attend an intensive training clinic earlier this month. The training clinic was taken by Sliver License Coach Vivienne Kennedy, Head Coach of Geelong Sharks and National Team Victoria head coach, School Sports Australia. A total of 12 swimmers took up the opportunity to attend the clinic, where their focus was on refining and building upon both diving and turning skills. Theses skills and techniques are of great importance, and the timing was perfect with thr swimmers currently competing in the State SC Championships in Adelaide this week. To coincide with this athlete development opportunity, coaches from Mount Gambier Swimming Club spent the day on pool deck with Vivienne and have been provided with a wealth of resources to take back to future training sessions with their swimmers. In between sessions in the pool swimmers were kept on their toes and actively engaged through a Pilates session with Pilates offering the benefits of stretching and activating the inner core muscles, which swimmers can continue to use to comple, ment their pool training. Another clinic will be held next month allowing local swimmers to further build on skills and techniques and they would like to acknowledge the funding support provided by the City of Mount Gambiers Junior Sports Assistance Fund, to allow such opportunities.
