COVER - NEW FACE JOINS THE MOUNT GAMBIER CHIROPRACTIC CENTRE TEAM It was after a motorbike accident as a 19 year old that Stephen Kirby became a chiropractic convert and he so strongly believed in its value to well being that he made it his career. A powerlifter, Stephen’s motorbike accident left him unable to train and after trying a number of options, only the chiropractor was able to restore his health and allow him to continue his active lifestyle. “The biggest issue that jumped out at me after seeing GPs and physios and other medical professionals was that the only issue they were dealing with was my pain and the symptoms, but the chiropractor looked at my body as a whole,” Dr Kirby said. “He educated me on the cause of the problem and that was a big thing for me. I couldn’t train and do the things I wanted to do but after that first adjustment not only did the pain disappear but I started to feel a change in my energy levels and I slept better.” Dr Kirby studied in Melbourne, has spent time in practice

in Geelong, Melbourne and regional and coastal Queensland and Mount Gambier, where he joined the Mount Gambier Chiropractic Centre team just over a month ago, has provided his young family with the chance to enjoy a quieter life. “I’ve always loved the country and I’ve worked in the country and I think it is right for us,” Dr Kirby said. He has moved here with his wife and their young son. “I also think people are more connected in a country area,” he said. Dr Kirby saw joining the Mount Gambier Chiropractic Centre team as a chance to really make a difference, for a business that needed a new practitioner, and for the well being of the Mount Gambier community. “Health is a process not an event,” Dr Kirby said. “We sometimes view our health as I’m okay or I’m not okay but it isn’t that simple. You don’t just have a heart attack or get cancer, there is a process that leads to that. I want to help people understand that and I think country people do take a wider view of their health and are more switched on to taking care of themselves.” Dr Kirby joins Dr Janine Ritchie at the Crouch Street North centre and his expertise ranges from babies to seniors across the gamut of treatment options. It was seven years ago that Dr Ritchie and David Thompson took over the reins of the Mount Gambier Chiropractic Centre, opening

a new chapter for the business, which is centred on gentle, effective care for the whole family. Bringing a wealth of experience and a desire to provide this community with quality care, Dr Kirby subscribes to the same philosophy, believing everyone deserves to live an active, pain-free life in a strong and healthy body. Providing care for patients from birth to 95+ years, the Mount Gambier Chiropractic Centre team has experience assisting with a wide variety of conditions including dizziness, headaches and migraines, back, neck and pelvis pain, recovery after illness, postural issues, scoliosis, balance issues and falls prevention in elderly patients, sporting injuries and injury prevention and performance enhancement for athletes. DANCING QUEEN Kim Cella has been choreographing and performing since she was five years old. The dance studio founder often rounded up her friends to put on concerts for family and friends and while Kim has always loved dancing and creating pieces, she honestly never thought it would be a career. I think the 450 students that attend Hype Dance on a weekly basis suggest it has become a career, as would the need for Kim to bring in two partners, a move that coincided with the studio’s 10 year anniversary this year. Formal lessons started for Kim when she was five. “Mum had me in a ballet class to start off with,” Kim said. “I had too much energy for ballet – I complained it was too slow and I wanted to move faster.” Mind you, a footnote to those early recollections is Hype Dance offers ballet with Kim acknowledging what a critical foundation it is for technique and discipline across all dance genres. “It is good for dancers to do it, it teaches important skills and complements every genre,” Kim said. One of the other shortcomings of Kim as a young dancer was not wanting to practice. “I was still dancing at home but I was making up my own dances and not practising what I was supposed to be practising,” she said. Perhaps an early sign that choreography and being in charge of the creative side of dancing was always going to be her forte, was that she was only 10 when she combined forces with

her sister Tamara to create their own duo for a dance competition. “It was a choreography competition and it was

a lot of fun and we just kept entering that each year,” Kim said. Eventually the girls entered more and more

lifestyle1.net | 04

competitions, locally and interstate, but it soon became clear to Kim that professional dancer was not where her passion lay. “The older I got the more I knew I wanted to be behind the scenes, putting things together and watching other people make it their own,” she said. The next chapter in the story could be titled – mother knows best – with Kim, against her own wishes, embarking on a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. “Mum just thought it might be something I could need in the future and I’m very grateful she talked me into it,” Kim said. It meant Kim, as a 15 year old, was teaching, as well as earning qualifications she could use down the track if required. A planned break from dancing ended up turning into a life changing chapter as Kim went from wanting to temporarily walk away after 17 years straight of dancing to setting up her own studio. “My uncle told me he had an empty space I could use if I was interested in starting my own dance studio,” Kim said. “I had already had six months off from dancing but it was an offer too good to refuse in the end.” And so Hype Dance was born, in a shed in Mount Gambier’s industrial area. “I had to vacuum the floor every day because it was just so dusty,” she said. So at 23, her sojourn from dancing was cut short and she created her own business. cont. page 25

WHALE WATCHING SEASON UNDERWAY Whale watching season has started with an impressive display in the Glenelg Shire, with a cheeky visitor exploring assets at the Port of Portland.

A Southern Right whale was spotted earlier this month in Portland Bay, with whale watchers catching a close glimpse of the mammal from

the popular Lee Breakwater jetty. The sighting, which was shared across social media platforms, generated much excitement from the general public with a post on Whalemail attracting 40,000 responses within a 20 hour timeframe, including more than 200 individual shares. Portland Tourism Association president Dennis Carr said Portland was living up to its profile as a whale watching capital. “Last year Portland and the surrounding region experienced record breaking whale sightings off our coastlines, delighting locals and visitors to our region from May through to October,” he said. “A total of 115 Southern Right Whales, 30 Humpback Whales and three Orca Whale sightings were sighted off coastlines near Portland, Narrawong, Cape Nelson and the Cape Bridgewater during the annual whale migration period. These figures set a new record for annual whale sightings and attracted national media attention, with visiting whales and their calves featuring in national media outlets such as the The Herald Sun, The

Weekly Times and The Age.Following on from this unprecedented success, this confirmed visitor is a promising sign that we will experience yet another year of high whale visitation.” The interest already generated for this season sees locals bracing for a huge influx of visitors to our region as they attempt to catch a glimpse of these creatures in action. “I’m looking forward to the positive benefits for our economy and local business operators from these welcome visitors,” Mr Carr said. Whale watchers can register

for instant whale sightings via the Whalemail webpage on the I am Portland tourism website Whale sightings are also shared via social media on the Whalemail Facebook page. The Portland Visitor Information Centre will also fly a yellow flag every time a whale sighting is reported. AUSTRALIAN ARTIST IN THE SPOTLIGHT The Hamilton Gallery is now showcasing woodblock paintings and unique woodblock prints by Cressida Campbell from public and private collections, including key works from the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Opened last week, the

lifestyle1.net | 06

exhibition features remarkable works of observation centred on intimate domestic interiors, still life compositions and nature, by one of Australia’s most accomplished artists. Curated by Hamilton Gallery Director, Sarah Schmidt, the exhibition includes a

number of seminal works from the artist’s career, with loans from public institutions around Australia and the Hamilton Gallery Collection work Palm fronds with bowls 2017 (pictured). “We are thrilled to present this exhibition and especially to have Cressida travel to us to speak on May 16,” Ms Schmidt said. Cressida Campbell is an Australian artist who developed an interest in woodblock printing when she studied in 1980 at the Yoshida Hanga Academy in Tokyo. She draws her compositions on plywood, carves the outlines and paints the image in many layers of watercolour. The finished picture is sprayed with water and a single impression taken and the result is one print and one block. This exhibition will present both woodblocks and prints and runs until July 7.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - UNHAPPY BIRTHDAY… By ROBBIE TANSEL I know the election is not far off so it would be difficult to add a new policy at this stage. But I’ve got a policy proposal that if anyone made it part of their platform, they’d get my vote. I think it should be illegal for someone to wish you happy birthday unless it makes sense. It was Donna’s birthday recently and the first person who rang her and wished her a happy birthday was our bank. Let’s be honest. They don’t know Donna. The only time they’ve met her was the time we had to go down there to sign four hundred and eighty documents so that they could have us over a barrel owing them hundreds of thousands of dollars. If the person who rang Donna saw her down the street, I’m confident they wouldn’t know it’s her. I’m sorry, but they have no right to ring us at our house and wish her a happy birthday. Not only shouldn’t they wish her a happy birthday, I bet they don’t want to ring her and wish her happy birthday. It’s quite obviously company policy, some poor bugger draws the short straw and they have to ring all the customers who have a birthday that day. Does it in any way convince me to stay a customer, because I suspect this is the reason they rang her? If I one day am thinking, “I might take my business (horrible debt) somewhere else” will my decision be influenced by the fact that someone was forced to wish me a happy birthday each year? If I want to get a loan for a minivan, do their totally insincere birthday sentiments make any difference? Hint, the answer to this question is not yes. Truth be told, having my bank ring me is actually an inconvenience. I’m pretty darn busy and instead of spending quality time with my family/friends/weeping in a corner for another year I’ve wasted, I’m stuck in an awkward conversation about my birthday with a person I don’t know who couldn’t care less about my birthday. Tip to bank. Don’t ring me. Take the thirty cents it cost to phone me, plus the money you paid the person to call me, and put it in to my loan. As if that wasn’t bad enough the next phone call she received was from the beauty place she goes to. They wanted to wish her a happy birthday, and of course to give her fifty percent off a mani/pedi when purchasing another service. So to sum up, as long as she spends money with them, they’ll give her a birthday present. Sorry, half a birthday present. She still has to pay for the other half of the present. I’m not sure about you, but if I had someone who rocked up to my house for my

birthday with two presents wrapped up, who then announced, “You have to pay for this present, but then I’ll give you this other present, as long as you pay for half of that one as well” they’re probably not getting a turn blowing out the candles. The rest of the day is of course spent acknowledging birthday wishes from people who only know it’s her birthday because it’s listed on her Facebook page and is flashed up as a notification on their feed. Facebook even has a readymade box for them to write a comment, so they don’t have to even care enough to find her wall and write a message. Once again, these are people who did not acknowledge her birthday in any way prior to the advent

of Facebook. They wouldn’t know when it was if they weren’t prompted. I took my birthday off Facebook for exactly this reason. If you need social media to tell you it’s my birthday, you really don’t care that much. Mum. A pretty basic expectation is either buy me a whopping big present, or leave me alone. I have no interest in your sentiments unless they’re accompanied by an expensive gift. Possibly the biggest reason that I object to all of these fake birthday wishes is that even I don’t really care about my birthday. Yes it’s the day I was born, which meant something to everyone forty odd years ago, but who really cares anymore. I’m not Jesus or anything. I’m just an old bloke whose

best years are behind him. We don’t really need an annual celebration about me. Enough’s enough.

COMMUNITY SOLAR PROGRAM LENDS A HAND TO LOCAL FOODBANK ShineHub has two main goals as it embarks on its second round of Limestone Coast Community Solar Program information events – to sign as many people up as possible for significantly cheaper power options, and to be able to give back to the communities that have so strongly supported them. Last year more than 100 households across the region made the switch to solar via the inaugural Limestone Coast Community Solar Program and the opportunity to be a part of this solar and battery system offer is here again with sessions in Millicent, on May 14, before making its way over to Mount Gambier, on May 15. The program is a rare opportunity access free advice that will help you understand solar and battery technology, as well as enabling you to access exclusive bulk buy discounts and claim up to $6000 in SA Government battery subsidies. The region’s Community Action For Sustainability has partnered with Solar Marketplace, ShineHub, to deliver this new offering of the program that will explain how you can cut your electricity bills by up to 90% with new solar and battery technology starting at just $9999 or $131/month through the program. The program will also offer new ‘payas-you-go’ options that aren’t available anywhere else across Australia. It is also through Community Action for Sustainability and ShineHub that the

Limestone Coast Regional Foodbank has been able to install 12KW solar panels, which are now operational. “We are thrilled that as a result of last year’s campaign that we could give back to the community through the free supply of the solar panels to the Foodbank,” Alex Georgiou, from ShineHub said. It was certainly an offer the Foodbank could not refuse. The partnership was born out of a Rotary Club tour where Community Action for Sustainability group member Alan Richardson saw firsthand what

the Foodbank provides this region. Limestone Coast Regional Foodbank branch manager Lynne Neshoda said they were asked what issues they faced and electricity costs was one of the big issues. “And the next thing we knew we were having solar panels installed,” she said. “We can buy more food with the savings, which is what we do with anything we save.” With the warehouse and food hub both in demand, to be able to significantly reduce the electricity spend has been critical. “The need continues to

grow unfortunately,” Mrs Neshoda said. Last financial year Foodbank handed out 152,000kg of food, which was a doubling of the previous year’s demand and 330,000 meals on top of that. “We have such fantastic support from local business and fantastic volunteers that we couldn’t run without,” Mrs Neshoda said. The Limestone Coast Regional Foodbank covers from Bordertown to Portland and everywhere in between, working in conjunction with 22 school breakfast programs and hand in hand with 78 agencies, including the Salvos, Vinnies and ac.care. Forty-nine of those agencies refer people to the Foodbank through a voucher system, and the foodbank also provides emergency relief. “We work with forever clients as well as those that need help short term,” Mrs Neshoda said. To save money on your power bills and to also lend a hand to crtifcal community projects, head to one of this week’s information sessions. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL GENERATIONS IN JAZZ DONE & DUSTED

The Limestone Coast has hosted another successful Generations in Jazz (GIJ) weekend with more than 5300 participants representing 134 Australian and New Zealand schools. “You’d think that we would get used to the numbers and the talent, but I never have, and I never will,” Generations in Jazz artistic director James Morrison said. Acclaimed jazz, blues and gospel singer Lizz Wright received a standing ovation from the 7700-strong crowd for her rendition of Amazing Grace, and said the opportunity to be surrounded by so many young musicians took her back to her childhood. “It’s just got its own kind of electricity – I’m having a ball!” she said. Another of the high profile guest artist line-up, Kurt Elling described GIJ as one-of-a-kind. “I’ve been in several situations around the world where there’s music festivals but very rarely when it’s for young people, about young people, and then I get to perform for them and with them – it’s magnificent,” he said. South Australia’s Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment David Ridgway paid his first visit to Generations in Jazz and labelled it world-class. The extensive list of VIP guests also included GIJ chairman Mark Mentha and his wife Lisa, and GIJ regulars Jeff and Felicity Kennett. “We love the atmosphere, we love what it represents and we love the fact that there are so many children here joined together by music,” Jeff Kennett said. “It really is an understated asset not only for Mount Gambier and South Australia but for Australia. To think that you get all of these schools and children in one place competing and also learning – it is an extraordinary event.” Up to 500 community volunteers contributed to the success of the Generations in Jazz weekend and the Limestone Coast reinforced its reputation for country hospitality. All accommodation within a 100-kilometre radius of the Blue Lake city was fully booked for the festival, with participating schools also staying in halls, sporting clubrooms and private homes across the region.

Adelaide’s Prince Alfred College was named the Division 1 Stage Band winner, while Adelaide’s Marryatville High School had the weekend’s top large vocal ensemble for the second year in a row and the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School won best small group vocal ensemble. The Band Director’s Award for the most outstanding jazz educator went to Prince Alfred College’s Lizzie Gregory, and Walter Saluni from Melbourne’s St Bede’s College won the Vocal Ensemble Director’s Award. In what was the 30th anniversary year of the James Morrison Scholarship, 16 year old alto saxophonist Damon Poppleton walked away with the $10,000 prize.

Brisbane’s Adelina Martinez won the $10,000 Vocal Scholarship, sponsored by The Border Watch, and will receive a day’s recording at the ABC Studio in Sydney sponsored by ABC Jazz. Above (left) - James Morrison (centre) with the scholarship winners - vocallist Adelina Martinez (left) and alto saxophonist Damon Poppleton, who is only 16 years old. PHOTO COURTESY OF STEB FISHER Above (right) - Headline artist Lizz Wright wowed the crowds over the weekend with her rendition of Amazing Grace stealing the show.

FROM TRAINEE TO AWARD WINNER One of the Glenelg Shire Council’s emerging leaders was recognised for her diligence and positive approach to work, receiving an award in acknowledgment of her administration skills. Claire Charman was announced as the recipient of the Emerging Administrative Professional of the Year Award at the 2019 United Way Administrative Professional Breakfast earlier this month in Portland. Claire is the first ever recipient of the award, which was introduced as a separate category alongside the top award of Administrative Professional of the Year. Glenelg shire community services director Edith Farrell said the award was a testament to Claire’s ‘can do’ attitude and the value of council’s traineeship program. “Claire is a particular success story for our organisation; she has transitioned from our traineeship program to a permanent employee, stepping up and taking on new tasks and roles that she has never done before. We are very proud of what she has achieved over the space of just two and a half years,” she said. “She is an excellent innovator and will come to us with ideas when she notices that there could be a better way of doing things, and will always question when

she is unsure. “Most recently, Claire was successful in securing a temporary senior administration role, highlighting her outstanding administrative skills. Fellow council employee Kim Overall was also recognised at the Breakfast as one of the four nominees for the Administrative Professional of the Year Award. The United Way Glenelg Administrative Professional Breakfast has been celebrated for 10 years, recognising the crucial role that administrative professionals play in supporting and enhancing local businesses. Michelle will be speaking at 1.30pm and will have on show a family made, traditional possum fur cloak depicting her story and ties to the region. The gallery’s sculpture garden will come to life displaying A Warm Shot of Tetanus with a Dash of Kustom Kulture, bringing curious outdoor garden sculptures by artists Mark de Nys and Daniel Kane out for your pleasure.

Artworks will be created from recycled metal objects, promising surprises to the viewers. Both exhibitions run until June 30. Gallery 54 is located at 54 Church Street, Penola.

MAJOR AIRPORT UPGRADE UNDERWAY Construction has commenced on the $9.2M Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade project with Heenan Earthworks, the lead contractor for the runway and heavy apron beginning on site. Heenan Earthworks were successful in their tender for the civil works which includes a 120 metre asphalt extension to runway 18/36 and construction of a heavy aircraft apron; with both projects scheduled for completion October this year. On arrival to the airport precinct, via the entrance road, visitors will now start to see activity occurring as Heenan Earthworks begin installation of a contractor’s security gate for landside and airside movements. Airport manager Ian Fritsch is pleased to see works commence and that a local contractor was awarded the tender. “Civil works commencing is an important milestone and it is pleasing to see a local firm being involved in a regionally important project such as this,” Mr Fritsch said. “Many years of planning and preparation for this project is finally swinging into action.” The Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade is a project comprised of four main components: • Runway extension • Construction of a heavy aircraft apron • Airfield ground lighting upgrade • Terminal expansion The Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund is funding the Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade with a grant of $3.51M, along with the South Australian Government through the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure ($4.036M), the District Council of Grant ($1.154M) and the City of Mount Gambier ($500,000). lifestyle1.net | 24

The highly anticipated terminal expansion is touted to commence late 2019 with concepts and consultation being undertaken over the next six months. Ashley Halliday Architects were contracted to lead the design of the terminal in late 2018, with the entire project due for completion December next year. The District Council of Grant intends to provide a seamless travelling experience for the duration of the project and careful planning is being undertaken to ensure the project does not impact on airport operations. Many stakeholders and key partners have a vested interest in the Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade, making it a both a complex and exciting project for the region. The District Council of Grant are cognisant that information sharing is critical and regular updates through a variety of mediums will be available

throughout the duration of the construction. The Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade will provide critical aviation infrastructure, support economic growth and unlock the tourism potential of the Limestone Coast. More information: www.dcgrant. sa.gov.au/AirportProject Above (from left) - Member for Barker Tony Pasin. Grant District Mayor Richard Sage, South Australian Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government and the Minister for Planning Stephan Knoll & Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin cast an eye over the $9.2million dollar upgrade of the Mount Gambier Airport.

DANCING QUEEN

FROM PAGE 4 “Even then, I never thought I would ever employ people or have business partners or that it would be my full time job,” Kim said. “My motivation at the time was to make a difference in kids’ lives.” The premise was simple – it was all about having fun – no competitions or exams, just fitness and learning new skills. “I had no idea it was going to grow so fast although I guess you can’t predict these things,” she said. Hype Dance only lasted at its Commercial Street West home for 18 months before Kim already needed a larger more purpose built space to cater for her growing number of students. The move to Hype’s current home, in Helen Street, also coincided with students having a change of heart about performing, with Hype planning its first ever studio concert. “Of course I decided to get married and go on a honeymoon two weeks before the concert, I was a bit naïve early on about the whole process but luckily my sister Sara, who was 16 at the time, kept things going for me,” Kim said. “That first concert was a great learning curve.” And just as Hype outgrew its original shed, it also quickly outgrew the Wehl Street Theatre as a concert venue after only two years. “We just couldn’t fit all the parents and friends that wanted to come and see the kids dance.” Kim said. The annual concerts, instigated by the students, spawned a desire to compete, and while for Kim, that was never the plan, as the students continued to request a chance to test themselves against other studios, Kim realised she should grant them their wish and so Hype began competing at local eisteddfods. “The big thing for us was in 2012 when we competed at the Australian Hip Hop Championships for the first time,” Kim said. “It was never, ever on my radar to do something like that, it was driven completely by the students.” Hype started with two classes and

14 kids and by the 2010 inaugural concert, there were 111 students. That number is now 450, with 41 classes on offer and 14 staff, not to mention her two new business partners – Paris Ackland and Keana Soper. Hip hop and jazz and contemporary were all on offer when Hype first opened its doors with ballet being added to the curriculum in 2012, initially with a fly in Melbourne based teacher. Hype also added acrobatics to its class schedule, although it is just about the skills and not routines, and importantly, Kim has always made professional development a priority to ensure the school is up with the

latest dance techniques and trends. Ballroom, the fun Heels class, adult classes and even Zumba have all had a place on the Hype schedule at one time or another, while Kim has also been the mastermind of seven instalments of Swinging With The Stars, has been the brains behind various Pioneers cheerleading squads and has always looked to support a variety of community groups and events. This year, Hype is running its first ever dance competition – the latest innovation for the ever-evolving studio – on June 29. And again Kim’s planning is slightly out – she is expecting her third child in just six weeks’ time. Hype also has its own success story of dancers leaving the school and pursuing a career and Adrian Tucker is that student that Kim now uses to inspire others looming to take their dancing more seriously. “And we do have a couple more kids this year looking to audition for full time dance courses, which is great,” Kim said. Hype is also now teaching Certificate II and III in dance for the region’s high schools and Kim has been nominated for VET Trainer of the Year. Seems it’s always a case of watch this space. Above - Kim Cella at the end of another successful; Swinging With The Stars event at The Barn. She has been in charge of choreographing and teaching the eight couples involved on seven occasions.

VOLUNTEERS TO BE HONOURED AT MORNING TEA

THE District Council of Grant is hosting its annual Volunteers’ Morning Tea at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex on Thursday, May 23 at 10.30am. The event is in recognition of the valuable contribution volunteers make to our community and to celebrate National Volunteers’ Week. There are a wide section of community involved in around 140 volunteer organisations throughout the district including those involved in sporting, charity, youth, environmental, education, emergency services, history, art, seniors and progress committees. Volunteers from any of these district organisations are invited to attend. “It is always great to have so many volunteers from different groups and townships mixing at one celebration,” Mayor Richard Sage said. “The morning tea is a way to show appreciation to the wonderful volunteers who help provide much needed services & support to the District Council of Grant community.“ Council’s ‘Youth on Wheels’ program is a positive example of local government and volunteers working together to increase support and services for the local community. The program’s volunteers assist disadvantaged young people in the region to gain their provisional driver’s licence by supervising them in a special fitted car while they complete the required hours of practice before applying for a provisional licence. Since the program’s pilot in 2013, volunteers have contributed more than 2000 hours or an average of 385 hours per year towards mentor driving with young people. Special mention must be made to Kevin Davis, Jack Peacock and Malcolm Driscoll who together have contributed more than 1200 driving hours to the program and along the way mentored and made an enormous impact on the lives of

many young people. “I am very proud to live in a community that cares about each other and are prepared to contribute their time and experience to get things done. And that is what makes our district such a great place to live,” Mayor Sage said. Free transport from Tarpeena, with a Mount Gambier collection point is provided. For further information,

transport booking or to RSVP to assist with catering requirements, please contact the Port MacDonnell Community Complex on (08)8738 3000. Following in the footsteps of husband Ben, Elle Hood is a contestant in Swinging with the Stars 2019. She moved to Mount Gambier from Naracoorte in February 2008 to begin studying a University degree and is now a midwife-nurse in the maternity-paediatric unit at the Mount Gambier Hospital. Elle became involved with Swinging with the Stars after receiving a phone call from Tania Von Stanke, a member of the Stand Like Stone committee, who asked her if she would be interested in participating. “When she asked me, I thought it was a real honour, so I just went for it. I thought it would be fun and good to help the community.” She said that her husband Ben Hood, with his passion for the community and everything he does, also encouraged her to participate. They have attended Swinging with the Stars for the past 5 years. Elle said she has had no prior dancing experience and has not been in any other dancing competitions, other than ‘dabbling a bit as a little kid at jazz ballet and calisthenics.’ Her dance partner is Cody Smith, who won Swinging with the Stars with his dance partner Laura Hawkins last year. Elle said that she gets a bit nervous about the steps and the speed of the dances and remembering her left and right will be a bit of a challenge. “I just get so nervous in my head about repeating the dance and the steps in general but the rehearsals are going ok and it’s coming together,” she said. Elle has got some ideas in place for how she plans to fundraise for the foundation and the money she raises is going directly to the Stand Like Stone Foundation. She recently held a ‘Big Moo View’ in Glencoe, where those who came along had the opportunity to meet the biggest cow in Australia, Big Moo, while George the Farmer came to say hello to the kids and there were Clydesdale horse and cart rides. Coming up on June the 1, together with fellow contestant Liz Rymill she is hosting ‘Bucks for our Backyard: A Family Night Out at

the Coonawarra Hall,’ a public event which will include live bands, fun kids’ entertainment and great food and drink. Elle is also looking to run a couple of raffles and also has an dress up and bring a friend event at F45 Training Mount Gambier – all for a gold coin donation - with details of the date and time to be released soon. Elle said that her husband, who previously won Swinging with the Stars in 2015 with his dance partner Kath Miller, should hopefully have some tips for her on her dancing technique to help her out with rehearsing at home. “I’m planning to teach him the dances so that he can do the dances with me. Hopefully he’s got muscle memory, I’m sure there’ll be some moves in there that are similar.”

Limestone Coast motorists received a road safety boost last week with Member for Barker Tony Pasin announcing the Federal Government is investing $650,000 to improve Carpenter Rocks Road, Compton, under the 2019-20 Black Spot Program. A further $780,000 has also been allocated to improve Frances Road, Bordertown. Mr Pasin joined South Australian Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll to make the announcement. Shoulder sealing, delineation improvements and hazard removal are all on the acrds for both 4km stretches. “By specifically targeting road locations with a history of crashes, the Black Spot Program reduces crashes causing injury and death at those sites by around 30 per cent," Mr Pasin said. “As chair of the state’s Black Spot Consultative Panel, I’m working hard to ensure funding is allocated to the most dangerous parts of the South Australian road network.” For more information on the Australian Government's Black Spot Program, or to nominate a black spot, visit investment.infrastructure.gov. au/infrastructure_investment/black_spot Above - Member for Barker Tony Pasin, State Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government, Stephan Knoll & Member for Mackillop Nick McBride survey Frances Road.

LOCAL SPORT PLENTY OF STAR POWER TAKING ON 100 MILE CLASSIC

BAD BOY Ex-AFL player Brian Lake has been banned from all levels of football following a report and two game suspension while playing for Caroline Springs. The three time premiership player has exceeded the number of matches suspended by the national registration policy and as such has been deregistered. Lake intends to appeal the sentence.

END OF AN ERA Channel 9 has cancelled The AFL Footy Show after 25 years on air as the revamped program faced its worst ratings in history. At its peak the show was the flagship for combining football and entertainment with its biggest star, Sam Newman, never far from controversy

The time honoured Mount Gambier Cycling Club 100 Mile Classic is this weekend and the 2019 event has attracted an elite field for the weekend of racing. The Squashbrook Fitness and Leisure 100 Mile Classic and the Moreland Holdings 111km Women’s Classic start at Tenison Woods College (White Ave) at 10am on Saturday with Cycling SA’s high performance team locked in to be part of the fields, with the Cycling Victoria riders also rumoured to be heading this way after a jam lacked Victoria racing schedule. Defending men’s champion Jarrad Drizners is returning to defend his crown, while the women’s field already boasts nine new names. Olympian Amy Cure looms as the headline act. The three time world championship gold medallist is the first person in history to medal at every endurance track event at world championship level, with three newly gained medals in the team pursuit, omnium, and madison at 2017 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, in Hong Kong. The good news, especially for local hopes, is the handicap event means club riders can take on the professionals as the course winds through Kongorong, Tantanoola, Millicent, Glencoe and back to Mount Gambier, where the women will finish on Bay Road, while the men will continue to Port MacDonnell and return to also finish on Bay Road just before the Rail Lands. The men are competing for the $2000 first prize and the women, a top prize of $1000. The club’s blue riband event also features junior racing with the ASW Lawyers Junior Classic starting on Tollner Road at 11am with the junior riders heading to the end of Cafpirco Road finishing where they started. The Under 11/13 category will compete over 9.4km and the Under 15/17 group will compete over 33km. Sunday sees the riders lining up for the Native Plant Wholesalers State Kermesse Championship, which take place around the Blue Lake, with juniors starting at 8am, followed by the men’s C and D grades, the women and then the main event - the Elite Men’s State Kermesse Championship, which starts around 10.30am and sees the riders competing for an $800 prize.

THE DUST IS SET TO FLY

LUCK ALWAYS A FACTOR The American basketball (NBA) finals are in full swing. Hard fought best of seven series become a real war of attrition as the best remaining teams battle it out, so it is certainly untimely for defending champion Golden State Warriors that an injury to Kevin Durant, who many consider to be the best player in the world, might see him miss the remainder of the season. Currently up three games to two in the conference championships against Houston Rockets the Warriors will be hoping for the best for their injured star.

Off road racing will make a welcome return to the South East of South Australia for 2019 as the Millicent Sand Buggy Club host the popular GT Bobcat Mumbannar 160 this Saturday. The unique racing schedule has proved to be a success in previous years with competitors needing to complete 16 laps of the dirt track that winds through the local scrub bushes. The individual heat format gives drivers the opportunity to race wheel to wheel with plenty of overtaking options and the 10km circuit provides spectators with action aplenty. All range of classes will be catered for and a strong list of competitors is expected. Heading the list of competitors is current South Australian Champion Todd Lehmann, who has moved into a Jimco Unlimited buggy this season, and will be looking for a strong start to his 2019 campaign. The first heat is due to start at 10am SA time at the event held on Fahley’s settlement Rd Mumbannar Vic, 30kms East of Mt Gambier. Catering will be available at the track for breakfast and lunch. LOCAL SPORT PIONEERS REVERSE MAVERICKS RESULT

PARTY TIME FOR UNDERMANNED PIONEERS

The Eastern Mavericks and Mount Gambier Pioneers women faced off on May 5 on the Mavericks home pine with the Mavericks securing a seven point win. Back on their home court, the Pioneers were able to conjure their own narrow victory, coming back from a below par third quarter to snatch a six point win. Both sides struggled to find range and it took the Pioneers two minutes to find their first basket, with a Pachis Roberts lay up – in fact the star US import scored the first seven points for the home side. A Maddy Wormald three with a minute to play in the first saw the home side up by nine points but the Mavericks rallied to close the gap to three points by the first change. Amanda Frost opened the second with her only three for the game, in the first 15 seconds, and then the scoring dried up again for the Pioneers, who did not hit another shot for a further four minutes, and it was a quarter where Frost dominated, scoring eight of her 16 points for the game. It saw the Pioneers with a five point lead at the half. The third quarter was all ab out the visitors, who opened with an 11-0 run to take control. It was with 5:40 to play on the clock that the Pioneers finally hit the scoreboard courtesy of an Emily Winter lay up and by the final change trailed by only one point. Frost made a lay up early in the last giving the home side a one point lead and the Pioneers never surrendered the lead for the remainder of the match. It was all about attacking the basket in the final quarter for the Pioneers, with Roberts, Maddy Wormald and Winter all taking on the Mavericks defenders in the paint. In the end, the home side held on for a six point victory, Roberts

It is never a good sign for an opposition team if Mount Gambier Pioneers skipper Tom Daly has 13 points in the opening quarter and even less promising if Kentrell Barkley has already picked up 12 points so the Eastern Mavericks knew they were in for a tough night at the office. The Pioneers defeated the Mavericks by 22 points on the Mavs home court the previous Sunday and they were in no mood to show mercy in front of the Icehouse crowd. The Pioneers led by 19 points at the first change and things did not improve for the visitors. The second quarter saw Dayjar Dickson go on a highlight reel rampage with three consecutive dunks, while Daly continued to be dangerous as the home side extended the margin to 37 by the main change. Not to be outdone by his fellow import, Barkley provided the showtime moments in the third, including a dunk, scoring 10 points for the quarter. When Lachie Hunter scored his third basket of the quarter in the dying seconds of the third quarter, the Pioneers topped the 100 point mark, with Brad Rathjen, who finished the night with 21 points, even getting in on the action with a dunk of his own. A Tom Daly three with six minutes to play saw the Pioneers hit a game high 52 point lead and in the end, a junk time three from the Mavericks saw the final margin at 47 points, all the more meritorious given Sam Daly and Erik Burdon, two of the sides most experienced players, are still not back on court. Barkley finished with a game high 36 points and incredible 19 rebounds, while Daly had 33 points and Rathjen added seven assists to his 21 points. Lachie Hunter has a productive night on the scoreboard with 12 points, as the Pioneers

again influential with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Winter, with her 19 points and five rebounds, also continues to shine. Frost (16) and Maddy Wormald (14) were the other significant contributors on the scoreboard. Former local Georgia Green was part of the vanquished Mavericks team. The competition takes a break this weekend before the Pioneers host West Adelaide at the Icehouse on May 25. Above - Emily Winter
