COVER • OLD FAVOURITES & NEW ATTRACTIONS AT SE FIELD DAYS Yakka Park is set to spring to life again on March 15 & 16 for the 41st South East Field Days and the 2019 program has some blasts from the past, some old favourites and some exciting new attractions to entice visitors to Lucindale. In a sign of the times, Telstra’s The Code Club is coming to town - this program is a STEM and coding-focused program designed for children aged 8-12. The aim of the program is to inspire the generations of the future to consider coding and technology as a career. Session times can be confirmed by calling the SE Field Days office on (08)8766 7001. The visit from The Code Club will also see high school students part of the program with some Friday sessions, while the Carl Ryan Foundation will also be part of a strong educational focus at the 2019 field days with a cyber bullying seminar. On the lighter side of the 2019 attractions is the return of the Racing & Diving Pigs, which have always been a popular part of the SE Field Days and have not visited Yakka Park since 2010. One of the program highlights is the South East Axeman who will be running six displays and basically upping the ante each hour. “There is talk of a chainsaw powered by a motorbike at one stage, so it is bound to be spectacular,” secretary Lyn Crosby said. Another returning feature event is the Can Am Team and their Addicted to Mud stunts and demonstration as organisers bring Yakka Park’s Mud Hole back into action for the 2019 event.
“We are always looking to make sure we have a range of activities catering for all age groups,” Lyn said. So there is laser tag and mini golf for the kids and teenagers, as well as Old McDonald’s Animal Nursery and the Balharry Kindergarten Children’s Activity Tent. While there is also those attractions that have a general appeal, including the Lucindale Engineering Puppy Pound and the Coprice/Elders South East Field Days Championship Dog Trials. Over recent years one of the success stories of the SE Field Days has been the Lions Mobile Skin Cancer Screening Unit which has saved many lives and seen a real focus on skin checks in the community. To make an appointment for the skin cancer screening unit phone the field days office on (08)8766 7001 and you can also book a mobility scooter through the office as well. The Wimmera Hearing Van will also be at the 2019 event. For the past few years, one of the most popular competitors for entrants and spectators alike, has been the scarecrow competition but this year the creative minds in the community have been set a new challenge – the Scrap Metal Sculpture Prize. Sponsored by Elders, competition organisers are looking for animals constructed out of metal – they must be free standing and bigger than 60cm but smaller than two metres with judging taking place at 10am on March 15. The competition has adult and school sections. And the South East Field Days always remain true to

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY the reason they were started in the first place - to showcase innovations in the farming industry, from machinery to any new product that makes life on the land easier and most efficient. Some of this year’s innovations on display include Hi Tech CNC’s new noncaustic rust eating gel, as well as Leigh’s Water Tank Cleaning – a business started only four years ago but already kicking goals and his experience in cleaning thousands of tanks has now seen him
come up with his own invention – the Tank Spinner – and that will be on display at the field days. Using only the natural flow of rainwater, Tank Spinner allows us to direct the water flowing into the tank, creating a whirlpool action inside the tank. This results in the majority of the sediment being concentrated at the tank centre, away from the extraction point, giving you cleaner water as well as protecting your pumps, prolonging your filter.

MAKING SCIENCE FUN
NEW PRIZE ON OFFER FOR LOCAL ARTISTS
Science was in focus at Grant High School at the end of last month when Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre, visited the school. The long running science and technology roadshow looks to inspire students to pursue STEM subjects. The theme for the 2019 Grant High School visit was Rollercoasters and students were faced with a design challenge. Aiden Creasey, Chloe McIntosh and Jorja Mason were three of the students who took part in the Questacon challenge and for all three it was the first time they had enjoyed the Questacon experience. The students were provided a range of materials and had to work together to construct a rollercoaster. “They included straws, paperclips and other mystery items like bells and bananas – it was weird stuff,” Chloe said. “But what I did love was having hands on experience with science.” For Jorja, it was the diversity of everyone’s finished product that was so fascinating. “At the end, it was good to see how everybody’s project was different,” she said. For the girls, the Questacon visit only intensified their interest in science. “I really like science and I find it really rewarding when a practical experiment comes together,” Chloe said. “Science is really different from Year 7 to Year 8,” Jorja said. “It is more hands on and we get to do experiments and mix chemicals. I find it really rewarding and interesting now and enjoy documenting the outcomes in writing.” For Aiden, it was not just the rollercoaster project
Entries for the national Tatiara Art Prize are now open. Held every two years, the $10,000 acquisitive prize invites submissions of new wallbased work by Australian artists using any theme and medium, with the exception of photography. Presented by Bordertown’s Walkway Gallery since its inception in 2013, the prize has seen the Tatiara District Council acquire an impressive and notable collection of artworks – each iconic and reflecting the spirit and the changing face of the Australian contemporary art scene. This year, the prize is on the look out for new talents, to invigorate artistic passions and supporting local artists from across the Tatiara. In addition to the $10,000
that captured his attention. “I enjoyed the Virtual Reality session the most,” he said. “There was a rollercoaster on screen and we put on VR goggles and got the real life experience of it.” And like so many of his classmates, it is the hands on side of science he loves the
most. “I really like seeing the end results of our experiments.” Above - Aiden Creasey with the Questaon presenter Above - Chloe McIntosh & Jorja Mason

Sometimes you can just be in the right place at the right time and for Barry Stafford that was 1994 and the opportunity to work for the late, great Barry Maney. Looking for a new challenge and seeing the chance to work for, what was then known as Barry Maney Ford, as a stepping stone for his career, Stafford took on a role in the new Ford sales. From then on, things just kept falling into place for the man, who by his own admission was anything but a petrol head and didn’t really know anything about cars. “I wasn’t a car person at all,” Stafford said. “I knew how to put petrol in and put it into drive but I didn’t check the oil or anything. But I have learned about cars and now have a pretty good knowledge and I certainly have a passion for cars that I never had before and I dream of having a ’67 Mustang coupe in my shed but I’m still not a classic petrol head.” So while cars are his product, it is the people, both staff and customers, that has seen Stafford clock up 25 years at the Barry Maney Group. It was what attracted him to sales in the first instance and it is what has kept him in the business this long. “It is all about making customers happy,” Stafford said. And part of achieving that is having happy staff and that is clearly a culture that was established by Mr Maney and has been continued by those who have taken over the reins in recent years. “That’s a real strength of the dealership,” Stafford said. “We have an active social club and focus on team building and different things to engage our team. Looking after the staff is one of Mr Maney’s legacies and that is still continuing now under the new ownership.” At the beginning of this year, another family run enterprise, the CMV Group, took over the Barry Maney Group – in fact the new owners celebrated 85 years in business at the end of last month. Logistically that might have seen some changes on the ground in Mount Gambier, but for the most part, the Barry Maney Group is still very
much focussed on the cornerstones of the business from its early days as Mr Maney gradually built and developed his empire. Always with one eye on the future, succession planning was a huge part of Mr Maney’s business model and it was his vision for the future that saw Stafford stay at the dealership, the one time he contemplated moving on. Having been fast tracked from salesman to supervisor in three years and then almost immediately to sales manager, the chips seemed to fall Stafford’s way as he worked his way through the Barry Maney Group ranks. His itchy feet was all about change but

in the end, Mr Maney shared his vision for the future with Stafford and enticed him to continue his career in Mount Gambier. “We were looking for a bit of a sea change and had a look at the Sunshine Coast,” Stafford said. “It wasn’t about money, it was just about a new challenge because I still definitely enjoyed coming to work every day. I was thinking of getting into my own business. I felt I had honed my skills and was ready to strike out on my own but then I had a chat with Mr Maney who shared his succession plan with me and it was just the right fit.” CONT. PAGE 8

RAY OF LIGHT EXHIBITION NOW HEADED TO MILLICENT From March 8, Robyn Stacey: Ray of Light will be on display at The Millicent Gallery. The outstanding and unique exhibition has already enjoyed stints in this region at Mount Gambier’s Riddoch Art Gallery, Bordertown’s Walkway Gallery and Naracoorte Gallery. For this exhibition, eight large-scale camera obscura photographs by contemporary Australian artist Robyn Stacey will be on display for the first time in Millicent. First shown as part of the 2016 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Magic Object, Stacey’s camera obscura photographs depict an optical device of wonder, whereby the external world is trapped and inverted within the room. Included in the exhibition are camera obscura photographs of iconic and well-known sites around Adelaide, including the Brookman Building at the University of South Australia, Carrick Hill, The Cedars
at Hahndorf, the Institute Building, The Lighthouse Wharf Hotel in Port Adelaide, Parliament House and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). In the artist’s words these bewildering photographs become ‘a mash up of inside and outside’. “The magic of the camera obscura is that it makes us question what we take for grantedthe everyday experience is presented upside down and in reverse, mimicking the way an image forms on the retina,” Stacey said. “In some photographs cars drive over the ceiling and the sky and clouds cover the floor… it’s like being in a movie where you are in the world but removed from it at the same time.” Robyn Stacey: Ray of Light runs from March 8 to April 7 at the Millicent Gallery. A live camera obscura will be installed at Millicent Gallery for the duration of the exhibition.

TOP CHAMBER GROUP SET TO VISIT CASTERTON Melbourne Chamber Orchestra’s flagship chamber ensemble Australian Octet, is set to perform three extraordinary works showing the full range of the dramatic, virtuosic and emotional possibilities of chamber music at the casterton Town Hall on March 29. Shostakovich’s theatrical, short octet is one of the great works of twentieth-century chamber music. Swiss-German composer Joachim Raff brings music brimming with joyous energy and lush melody and finally, Brahms’ youthful and sonorous second sextet brings this chamber music recital to a ravishing close. With six and eight string musicians performing in perfect synergy, this is a performance of enthralling energy and compelling intimacy. The Casterton Town Hall performance is at 7.30pm on March 29.
Stafford knows he had the unique opportunity of learning from some of the best in the business at the Barry Maney Group and with a clear path for advancement on the table, staying in Mount Gambier, close to his close knit family and tight social circle at the North Gambier Football Club, just made sense. It was in 2005 that Stafford was brought into the partnership – basically looking after the car side of the business, with fellow partner Jim Cornolo taking care of the trucks. “We have been business partners for more than 10 years now and we have different strengths which complement each other and work well together,” Stafford said. Stafford treasures the mentorship he received from Mr Maney and also credits Fred Hill and David Millard with shaping his career and making the Barry Maney Group an integral part of his life. Greg Povey has also also been an inspiration with his indefatigable work ethic and his outstanding customer service skills. “He just always goes the extra mile to make customers happy,” Stafford said. His 25 years at what is a multi-award winning business has also afforded him the chance to travel the world, representing the respected business at a number of industry events. But, in the end, with Stafford, as it did with Mr Maney, it is people that get him out of bed each morning and the community work, which has always been such a strong focus of the Barry

Maney Group, has become a huge part of Stafford’s role. “I have really embraced the chance to carry on the work of Mr Maney,” Stafford said. “In fact, we used to do a lot of it together – he would have the idea and then together we would make it happen.” Relay for Life teams, monster auctions, the Homelessness Luncheon and, of course, the huge role Mr Maney and the Barry Maney Group played in establishing and developing the Regional Foodbank are all projects as important to Stafford as they were to his one time mentor and boss. “It is good to be able to give back to the community and to look after those less fortunate than ourselves,” Stafford said. Technically born in Victoria, Stafford is probably now considered born and bred in Mount Gambier and the youngest of six kids is proud he has such strong family networks, both his own family and the Allen family – his wife Robyn’s family. “Robyn has obviously been a huge part of all of this and without her support things would be very different I’m sure,” Stafford said. “My father-inlaw Greg Allen has been another mentor for me too – just the way he goes about things – and I have so much respect for him.” Then there’s his North Gambier family. “The whole family had come through North so as the youngest that is always where I was going to end up,” Stafford said. He was fortunate enough to play in two premierships – ‘87 and ’89 – but the key defender retired as a 27 year old as he looked to focus more on his career. But he did have a hand in the recent golden years under returning coach Justin McConnell, when the club ended what had been a frustrating and heartbreaking premiership drought. He was chairman of the management committee when the club underwent a massive transformation which saw it add to its silverware. “I was very proud to be a part of that,” Stafford said. Now he is strictly on the sidelines and has watched his three sons Jake (21), Will (19) and Alex (15) come through the Tigers system. And for the man who is always looking for his next challenge, the car industry is set to provide that in the next five years. “Autonomous cars will be the next huge change in the industry,” Stafford said. “Just seeing where artificial intelligence takes us will be the next big challenge for the industry and for us, as part of that industry.” He is also looking forward to joining the somewhat exclusive 25 Year Club, which was established by Mr Maney, and which will have 14 members by the time this year ends. “I am looking forward to catching up with those guys.”

FEDERAL FUNDING BOOST FOR LOCAL MIGRANT RESOURCE CENTRE The Migrant Resource Centre of South Australia has received a $48,500 funding boost to help migrants participation in the Limestone Coast community. The Fostering Integration Grants program provides funding to not-for-profit organisations to help migrants better integrate into Australian life and support initiatives for social cohesion, such as promoting employment and community participation. Across the country, the Government is providing $9.3 million to organisations working at the grassroots level to assist migrants. Member for Barker Tony Pasin said the grant aims to support the important work the Migrant Resource Centre do at a local level and ensure Australia continues to be the most successful migrant nation in the world. “Local community organisations have an important role to play in creating social cohesion and ensuring the unity, prosperity, and security of our nation,” Mr Pasin said. “The Fostering Integration Grants program is about supporting organisations that work at the grassroots level in their community and have a strong understanding of the challenges facing migrants.” The Mount Gambier Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) will facilitate a project with the grant money that will bring youth from Australian-born, refugee and migrant backgrounds together to provide inspiration for the painting of a large-scale mural in a prominent public space in Mount Gambier. They will then draw pictures to tell their stories, which will be used as inspiration for two artists who will paint the Great Wall of

BLADE SHEARING RETURNS TO GLENCOE WOOLSHED The Glencoe Woolshed is set to spring to life again this weekend when the second Blades of Glencoe event is hosted at the historic rural landmark. The Glencoe Woolshed is iconic as it was never fitted out for mechanical shearing and remains a true replica of a past era when blade shearing was prevalent. The 2019 event, to be held this Sunday, is looking to not only showcase the time honoured tradition of blade shearing when around 60 blade shearers take up the challenge, but also to raise money and awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. The day will also include food and entertainment. All the action will kick off at 8am with the Ducks on the Pond female shearers also part of the event, having gained their own notoriety in Victoria for similar events focussing on mental health.
PORTLAND FLOWER SHOW CELEBRATING 50 YEARS The Portland Dahlia Society is celebrating its 50th anniversary show this weekend with its annual two day event. It will be wall to wall dahlias at the Portland Civic Hall as the local society hosts one of the most popular and prestigious shows in the industry. The society has held exhibitions at the Bunnings stores in Mount Gambier and Warrnambool as part of the lead up to the anniversary event with many keen gardeners often making the trek to the Portland event. Tickets are $5 an available at the door with the hall opening its doors at 10am Saturday and then shutting up shop at 4pm Sunday. lifestyle1.net | 23
It was back in March 2015 that the Glencoe Woolshed decided to return the facility to its former glory with a blade shearing event and huge crowds flocked to the inaugural Blades of Glencoe. Organisers of the 2019 event are hopeful similar numbers will return to take a first hand look at this once forgotten skill and to help with the fundraising effort. The 2015 event was the first time in more than a century that the rustic woolshed was being used for its original purpose – shearing – and by the end of the day, 700 sheep had been shorn. Even the old wool press got a work out as the Glencoe Woolshed was back at capacity with 40 blade shearers from across Australia taking to the boards to showcase the highly skilled art. The wool press, in fact, proved almost as popular as the shearing and watching the labour intensive process of pressing and packing the wool was a stark reminder NRM LOOKING TO STOP SPREAD OF INVASIVE WEED Buffel grass has been found growing on a roadside in the Upper South East, and the South East NRM Board’s NRM Officers are on hand to help with advice on how to prevent this recently declared weed from establishing in our region. NRM Officer Kym Haebich said that Buffel grass was introduced for pasture improvement and dust control across northern and inland Australia. “Unfortunately this has become invasive and spread well beyond initial plantings,” Kym said. “We’ve found it growing adjacent to the Dukes Highway just to the west of Bordertown.” Buffel grass is an erect, tussock forming, deep rooted grass with stems from 20cm–1.5m high. Its leaves are lush green when actively growing and straw coloured in dry times, and seed heads to 15cm long contain densely arranged small burrs.“This grass can quickly colonise bare or cleared areas, roadsides and pastoral lands where it forms dense monocultures and can displace native vegetation,” Kym said. “This causes habitat loss, and poses a dangerous fire risk as its flammable ground layer can carry extremely hot fires.” Buffel grass has the potential to become established in the South East,
of just how back breaking the sheep industry can be. Apsley shearer Richie Foster was front and centre of that event and will be again this Sunday.
but there are preventative measures. “If you’re travelling north and to outback regions, be sure to maintain good vehicle hygiene by checking and cleaning under your vehicle regularly to prevent carrying unwanted seeds home with you to the South East,” Kym said. “For added advice on identification and how you can control any suspected Buffel Grass on your property, NRM Officers are always available to chat.” For contact details on your nearest NRM officer, see the Natural Resources South East website or call (08)87351177 or (08)87551620.

Naracoorte Travel n Cruise’s Therese Oliver recently graduated with Masters for her Cruise Line International studies which puts her inside the top 150 Cruise Agents nationally as an accredited Master Cruise Consultant – Australasia, which is a phenomenal and simply outstanding achievement. Therese is the only Cruise Master in the entire Limestone Coast, her knowledge and experience placing her well and truly ahead her competition. Her name appeared up in lights at the CLIA 2019 Cruise Industry Gala Awards night in Sydney on Saturday February 23, a well-deserved accolade for the dedicated travel consultant. “This is something I have been working on for many years and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Kate and Greg , who are committed to investing in the training and development of their staff to ensure we have the knowledge, skills, experience and most up to date information to service our wonderful clients at Naracoorte Travel n Cruise, and clearly sets ourselves apart from our competitors,” Therese said. Tom and Lizzy Baker, family and staff celebrated a very successful 4th Elite Ladies Female sale with their Woonallee Simmentals last month, at Furner, highlighted with a new Black Simmental and Woonallee female auction record price of $30,000. In a total clearance, 64 females and genetic packages sold for an outstanding average of $5156, with every state represented on the buyers’ list. The sale was conducted by agents Elders and Landmark with Ben Finch (Elders) auctioneering. It was also connected on-line through Elite Livestock Auctions coordinated by Chris Norris, with this system adding 32 registered bidders to the 41 in the sale complex. It was one of the online bidders, Dallas Kropp, Dallas Ranch, Preston via Toowoomba, Queensland, who purchased the new Woonallee record priced female, brought forward to be the second heifer offered. He paid this for Woonallee Heaven Sent P4, a polled 11month-old black heifer, an imported embryo from Lewis Farms in Canada. “She is a really classy young female and certainly one of the best we’ve ever offered,” Tom Baker said. “You don’t have to go far north from here to know people are hurting out there with the seasonal conditions, so we knew we’d have to offer some really good ones to attract potential buyers and interest. We were also conscious we needed to put more numbers in to ensure there were quality heifers at good value so all budgets could compete. While this
said for Therese to be recognised among an exclusive collection of cruise industry experts and receive the ultimate accolade was something of which they were extremely proud. “Her dedication to the travel industry, and Naracoorte Travel n Cruise, is something we are so grateful for – we have always known how awesome she is, now it is well and truly official!” they said. top heifer was by The Riddler and out of arguably Lewis Farms’ top and most predictable cow, it was the depth of young quality females we were able to put up that pleased us most; even after adding nearly twenty more than at our last female sale.” Mr Kropp is no stranger to top quality Woonallee genetics, having privately outlaid $15,000 for a half share in Woonallee Sassy L366 in October 2016 after this heifer was in the winning interbreed pair at the Adelaide Royal Show the month before. This $30,000 price tag surpassed Woonallee’s previous $20,000 record, paid at their first Elite Ladies Sale in 2014 by Regan Burow, Yerwal stud, Lucindale for Woonallee Razzle Dazzle K276. The sale opened with the offering of the extremely soft, high volume and appealing blonde heifer, Woonallee Firefly P267 (P) by W. Las Vegas. This was snapped up by Mervyn Newlands,

Lavarta Simmentals, Toowoomba who made a big impact at Woonallee’s 2013 bull sale, outlaying a then Black Simmental record of $22,000 for the 10 month-old Woonallee Halfback. He later added another traditional heifer, W. Julani P171 (P) for $8000. Long time supporter, Tony Head, Cummins and buying through Landmark Cummins was the biggest volume buyer of females, purchasing six Black Simmental heifers at a great value $3083 average. “While traditionals are my passion, I am expanding the black side of our herd where the commercial market place has more strength at present,” Tony said. “There are some really exciting black genetics around now, especially the likes of The Riddler, that is so soft and easy doing; The Tanker types that have real grunt; High Voltage that offers calving ease with growth and muscling, plus the Messiah progeny coming along which will be a great line to follow.” Post sale, princpial Lizzy Baker said it was terrific to see such great and continuing support for their program from so many repeat clients. “But it was also good to see some new ones as well,” she said. One of these new clients was Ray Brothers, buying through GJ Hulm, Wagga, NSW. They purchased four black heifers to $4500 and at a $4000 average. In summing up the sale, Elders auctioneer Ben Finch said at any sale the vendors have always got to respect and take the results they get. “To draw the buyers that the Bakers have from right across the country and overseas in this season is a true reflection of the Woonallee program and the depth of investment, commitment and effort they’ve put into it,” Ben said. “While it was a great day for the Baker family and their staff, I reckon it was a better day for the buyers. There were a lot of buyers who went away from this sale really happy with the quality they got at top value.” Above - Pictured with the $30,000 new Woonallee and Black Simmental record priced female purchased by Dallas Kropp, Preston, Qld, are vendors Tom (kneeling left) and Lizzy Baker (back left), Chris Norris, Elite Livestock Auctions (back right), Elders auctioneer Ben Finch and Landmark stud stock’s Gordon Wood.

COMMUNITY SURVEY NOW ONLINE Community members living in the Glenelg Shire’s smaller townships are invited to take part in a short community survey to better understand where rural residents travel to for their daily errands. The community survey, which is currently available online through the Your Say Glenelg website, asks residents to submit feedback on which towns or cities they visit to complete errands such as shopping, banking and collecting mail. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said feedback received would be invaluable for future policy and strategy development. “All responses received will be essential for community planning and the
development of key council documents. By better understanding your shopping locations and travel patterns, we can best plan future workshops and events such as our listening post series,” she said. “Whether you visit one township to complete all of your errands, or you visit multiple townships, or if the city you visit is outside of the shire boundary, all feedback we receive will be beneficial.” Cr Rank encouraged all rural residents to take part in the survey. “We want to hear from all of rural communities, including townships such as Bahgallah, Condah, Digby, Mumbannar, Myamyn, Nelson, Narrawong and more,” she said. “If you live in a rural area or township, please take five minutes to complete the short online survey so we can discover where you predominately travel to for your errands.” Residents can access the community survey online via the Your Say Glenelg website at https://yoursay. glenelg.vic.gov.au. Hard copy surveys are also available upon request. Above - Charlotte Norman helps her aunty Chentelle Norman with the groceries. PROVIDING A HELPING HAND FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
The Stand Like Stone Foundation has delivered almost $40,000 worth of $50 vouchers to Limestone Coast families thanks to the FRRR Back to School Program. The vouchers help to reduce the burden of costs associated with the start of a new school year and this year will see 794 vouchers allocated to local families in partnership with schools across the region. The schools distribute the voucher in the most appropriate way to assist families and children with the greatest need. The program is unique, in that families can choose how they spend their vouchers and put them towards items that will provide the most benefit for their children. This is the 14th year Stand Like Stone has issued vouchers through the Back to School Program, to help students with the purchase of books, school clothes, stationery or other equipment needed to get students back to school.
Since the program was introduced to the Limestone Coast, more than 9000 students in this region have been assisted, resulting in a cash boost of more than $450,000 supporting education. Stories received from schools across the region show that families are extremely appreciative of this helping hand at the start of the school year. “The impact that this $50 voucher can have on a child’s life is enormous,” Stand Like Stone Foundation chair Bill DeGaris said. “The voucher enables students and families to access items that they might need to start school and can make a real difference at a time when the family budget is often stretched.” Funds from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal provided a grant of 594 vouchers to Stand Like Stone, while funds for an extra 200 vouchers were received through generous donations from individual donors from
across the region. Additional funds were provided through monies raised from Stand Like Stone’s major fundraiser Swinging with the Stars to top up the number of vouchers available to the local community. Vouchers have been distributed to all public schools located in the Limestone Coast.

DRUG & ALCOHOL REHABILITATION SERVICES RECIEVE FINANCIAL BOOST The Federal Government will invest $3 million to address the need for Drug and alcohol rehabilitation services throughout the Limestone Coast. The funding over three years, will be provided to Uniting Communities to deliver its New Roads Program in Mount Gambier, and Substance Misuse Limestone Coast Working Party will receive funding to develop a long term strategy for the region. The funding annoucnemnt cooincided with federal Health Minister Greg Hunt’s visit to the region last week for a community forum. From July 1, this year, Uniting Communities will receive $825,000
per annum for a Non-Residential Day Program that will have two components. An intensive day program offering people who have secure accommodation the structure of a residential rehabilitation program without the need to leave their home and a home detox program, in conjunction with GP services. That will include withdrawal services; medical support post withdrawal support and a treatment plan to addresses behaviour change and harm minimisation. Substance Misuse Limestone Coast will receive $175,000 per annum to establish a sustainable community based collaborative that will incorporate
public education programs; reactive treatment programs and training and education for professionals. Minister Hunt said the Government was committed to supporting Australiancommunities in their fight against substance abuse. “Alcohol and drug misuse affects not just the individuals involved, but the people and communities around them,” Minister Hunt said. “Treatment services are crucial to enable people with substance problems to get their lives back on track. It was a persistent and determined lobbying effort by the Member for Barker, that helped to secure the funding, for a community he is clearly very passionate about.” Member for Barker Tony Pasin welcomed the news and took the opportunity to reflect on the Federal Government’s initiatives in the region lifestyle1.net | 26
that sought to address the issue of substance abuse. “The Minister has been incredibly receptive to hearing my concerns on this issue over the past couple of years,” Mr Pasin said. “I thank the Minister for working with me on this. It’s a great outcome. I know alcohol and other drug abuse is an issue for the Limestone Coast and it is something I’ve been speaking about with the Minister for a long time. My advocacy within Government has seen Mount Gambier receive funding for one of the first Local Drug Action Teams in the country, the Good Sports Program rollout across the region and Focus One set up a dedicated office in Mount Gambier. Stand-alone these initiatives may seem small but together they play a very important role in addressing the issue.”

NEW COMMUNITY POLICING INITIATIVE LAUNCHES THIS WEEK Mount Gambier Marketplace and the Mount Gambier Police have teamed up to host “Coffee with a Cop” in a bid to increase community engagement and provide an opportunity to build meaningful connections between local police and residents of Mount Gambier. The event invites members of the Mount Gambier community to come along to the Mount Gambier Marketplace on the first Thursday of each month and share a complimentary coffee in the food court with police officers to discuss community issues. ARTS FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 25 YEAR ASSOCIATION WITH CO-OPERA One of the world’s most well-loved operas will be performed in Penola as a fitting celebration for a 25 year relationship between opera company Co-Opera and the Penola community. Co-Opera first performed in Penola in 1995, and has since staged an opera at every Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival. To mark the occasion, this year’s opera will be the popular Don Giovanni, presented in Rymill Hall, and guests are encouraged to dress up in black tie with a Gala theme. Event coordinator Peter Muller said it was the ideal opportunity to celebrate the long standing relationship between Co-Opera and the Penola and Coonawarra community. “The Co-Opera cast and crew love coming to this district, and it is the one region that they have visited
continuously for twenty five years, which is an excellent reflection on our audiences and community,” said Mr Muller. The evening marks the opening night of the festival, with the prestigious John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize announcement being held at the Penola High School beforehand. Guests will be presented with a commemorative keepsake glass of sparkling. With cabaret style seating set in Penola’s Rymill Hall, guests are also invited to BYO drinks and nibbles. TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS
The Blue Lake Breakaway, hosted by the Lioness Club of Mount Gambier, celebrated the 30th anniversary of the breakaway events in style with a jam packed weekend at the end of last month. Basically Breakways are the Lioness’ answer to district conferences favoured by so many other service clubs and with only two clubs in South Australia during those early days, they were cordially invited to be part of a Victorian event and that tradition has been maintained. It is the third time the Mount Gambier club has hosted the event and the 2019 Blue Lake Breakaway called the Silver Birch home for three days. Many of the Breakaway participants came to the region as early as the Tuesday so Mount Gambier certainly got its money’s worth out of the nine visiting clubs. Being the 30th anniversary event, the 2019 Breakaway had a pearl theme and pearls were certainly out in force for the anniversary dinner on the Saturday night. The celebration cake, beautifully iced by Mount Gambier president Gayle Green, was cut by the daughter of the organiser of the first Breakaway and the candles were fanned out by Mount Gambier Lioness charter member Claire Welch OAM. Diners were entertained after dinner by a trio of former students of The James Morrison Academy. The event also managed to showcase local produce and tourist attractions with ideal weather accompanying the bus tour and final farewell barbeque at Umpherston Skinhole. “Our visitors were most impressed with all they saw and sampled, high praise was also heaped on our selection of speakers who provided both education and
Spaghetti & meatballs with a twist 500g large spiral pasta 2 chorizo sausages, casings removed, roughly chopped 500g chicken mince 1 tablespoons olive oil 1 red onion, thinly sliced
3 garlic cloves, crushed 700g tomato pasta sauce 150g baby spinach 1 cup torn fresh basil leaves, plus extra basil leaves, to serve 180g tub baby bocconcini, drained
Method Cook the pasta in a large saucepan of salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and keep warm. Meanwhile, place the chorizo in a food processor and process until finely chopped. Add the chicken mince and process until well combined. Roll tablespoonfuls of the mixture into meatballs and place on a lined baking tray. Heat the oil in a large, non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Cook the meatballs, in batches, for 2-3 minutes or until golden. Transfer to a plate. Add the onion to the pan and cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes or until softened. Stir in the garlic and tomato pasta sauce and bring to a simmer. Return the meatballs to the pan and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until cooked through. Stir in the spinach until just wilted. Stir in basil. Preheat the oven grill on high. Place the pasta in a 3L (12-cup) ovenproof baking dish. Pour the meatball mixture over the pasta and scatter the bocconcini on top. Place under the grill and cook for 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is golden and melted. Serve sprinkled with extra basil leaves.
NEW EXHIBITION OPENING The Naracoorte Art Gallery is set to host an exhibition from two artists -Meagan Lonsdale and Kerry Bolwell - who share a love for fine details and are highly influenced by the natural world, and although their interpretations can be similar, more often than not they are worlds apart. This exhibition, which opens this Friday and runs until April 7, and is titled Point of View, is a showcase of works that have been discussed, but not seen. They have shared and swapped reference photographs, talked through ideas about their pieces and tried to explain methods and they ways in which they use their mediums. lifestyle1.net | 28

ICONIC COMMUNITY EVENT With a town population of 400 and a district population around the 1000 mark, Lucindale is a community that packs a real punch. The town’s most iconic event – the South East Field Days – is set to see Yakka Park come alive this weekend for the 41st running of the popular event. The field days are this Friday and Saturday in what is an event that brings the community together, celebrating all things rural, showcasing everything from yard dogs to fashion, from machinery to local produce, and even more importantly raising much needed funds for a raft of community groups and projects, with the tally over the past five years already well and truly topping the $2.5million dollar mark. The most significant contribution over the past 41 years was $100,000 towards the Naracoorte Hospital CATSCAN. “That is something we are exceptionally proud of,” South East Field Days secretary Lyn Crosby said. A huge crowd of more than 300 was on hand at Furner to witness an outstanding quality line-up of 100 Simmental bulls go through the sale ring at the Baker family’s 12th Annual Elite Production Bull sale last month. The fall of the gavel on the last lot from Elders auctioneer Ben Finch concluded another very good sale, with 98 selling at auction to buyers from all states of Australia, and New Zealand, topping at $30,000 and averaging $7102. While the overall average was 23% down on the previous year, which was boosted by a $52,500 top, it was a result that still pleased the vendors. “We knew leading into the sale that it was a tough time seasonally for many producers across Australia, plus there was a perceived price barrier for others, so we planned the extra numbers of commercial bulls in an effort to cater for more of our loyal commercial clients,” Tom Baker said. “We are over the moon with the result. Many of our clients who were with us when we started with just 20 bulls are still here. They are our bread and butter clients and could have gone elsewhere but they haven’t, so we are ecstatic to see so many exceptional bulls sell today in the great value range of four to seven thousand, giving them every opportunity.” In fact, two thirds of the big draft sold in that very affordable range, fully appreciated for the many repeat clients, as well as several newcomers. The highlight run of the sale was the 36 traditional bulls, with a $9103 average for the 34 that sold, including the $30,000 sale topper and 11 of the 14 bulls that sold for $10,000 or better. It was in this draft where most of the stud buying occurred. As was the case last year, it was an overseas buying account that won the bidding for the top lot. Tom and Adeline Sanson, Gold Creek Simmentals, Tekaraka, New Zealand were prepared to go further than anyone else for lot 6, the 22 month-old and 860kg Woonallee Notice N141 (P). This impressive Blonde
son of Sibelle Dirty Harry 25Z arguably had the best scan and performance data in the catalogue, including a huge eye muscle and positive IMF and fat measurements. The Sanson family first attended and invested in Woonallee genetics back in 2009 and has had great success with heifers for embryo transfer, plus bulls and semen packages over the past 10 years. They were also underbidders on the $37,000 second top priced bull in the record breaking 2017 sale. “There were three main things that influenced our decision to purchase this bull,” Tom Sanson said. “Firstly, he has complete outcross genetics from what we have in our herd, meaning we can mate him with any of our females, and with a moderate birthweight that includes heifers. Secondly he has impeccable structure, which is so important in our country in New Zealand, especially feet, and thirdly he is so easy doing, as soft as butter really.” The 44 Black Simmentals all cleared at a $6341 average, considerably more affordable for commercial producers being 36% lower than last year’s result which was strongly influenced by the $52,500 record priced Black Simmental, $40,000 above this year’s top. The 20 SimAngus were mostly snapped up by local area producers who have come to appreciate their quality, averaging $5375. The volume buying stakes were shared by three repeat commercial producers with five bulls each. Merv Marwood, through Landmark Kingston paid to $10,000 and averaged $5400 for five traditional bulls; Graham “Beaver” Johnson, LS Johnson & Son and buying through Elders Naracoorte paid to $5000 and averaged $4600 for two Traditionals and three Blacks, while Kevin McGrath, Millicent was again prominent on the SimAngus bulls with five to $5000 and at a $4200 average. Elders auctioneer Ben Finch summarised the sale saying, the result was a reflection of the Woonallee
program and the level of commitment the Baker family has put into it which is amazing. “They have been prepared to invest heavily in new genetics, and while not every investment they make works, the beauty of this sale is producers get to buy outstanding progeny from the genetics that did work,” Ben said. “If anyone didn’t buy today on quality for value, then I’m not sure what they were looking for. The Bakers are brilliant people with a brilliant program, and it is a privilege to be involved.” This was supported by Gordon Wood representing joint sale agents, Landmark. “With a major portion of the country in a big dry, and now some in a big wet, cow numbers are well down, so this was a tremendous result,” Gordon said. “The Bakers have highly sought-after cattle at the top of the industry, and their back-up service is second to none. One of the great things here today is it is evident that any talk of Woonallee cattle being too dear is clearly not the case. There was a chance for anyone with any budget to get involved and buy.” Principal Tom Baker said Woonalee have had a big year, including the launch of their Woonallee North venture. “We’ll celebrate this terrific result, but then the work starts for our next sale ventures which will probably include a Victorian bull sale,” Tom said. Lizzy Baker praised the great team at Woonallee. “We certainly can’t do it all ourselves and we are indebted to our staff for our successes, which are shared with them,” she said. Above - Pictured with Woonallee Notice N141 (P), the $30,000 sale topping bull are (kneeling), Elders auctioneer Ben Finch, co-principal Tom Baker, purchaser Tom Sanson, Gold Creek Simmentals, Tekaraka, New Zealand and Landmark stud stock’s Gordon Wood, (and standing) Adeline Sanson holding daughter Eleanor, and co-principal Lizzy Baker.

AT A GLANCE ALEXANDRA PARK SET FOR SIGNIFCANT REDEVELOPMENT A vision for Port;and’s Alexandra Park has been set following the endorsement of a key strategic document for the popular recreation venue. The draft Alexandra Master Plan was endorsed at last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting, with councillors voting to invest in providing a safe and multipurpose facility for broad community enjoyment. The Master Plan will ensure development of the facilities support the vision for increasing participation, as well as meeting current and future needs at Alexandra Park. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the Master Plan would help to attract government funding to support a major redevelopment of the busy sporting precinct. “Alexandra Park is a key multipurpose venue for the community, home to football, netball, cricket and BMX clubs,” she said. “The Master Plan will seek to address the key priorities of the venue’s user groups, as well encouraging informal community usage. Stage one of the Master Plan will see the development of new
netball courts, relocation of the crickets nets and a realignment of the access road to the facility. Stage two components include a new shared use clubroom and change room facility, a new car park and an oval lighting upgrade.” As part of the Master Plan, activities of the Portland Greyhound Club located at Alexandra Park will cease operations by March 31. “The cessation of greyhound training activities has been identified as a matter of priority in the Master Plan due to safety reasons,” said Cr Rank. “Extensive consultation has been undertaken to ensure the onward development of all individual clubs and user groups to achieve their goals and council will continue to support the Portland Greyhound Club in finding a more suitable location. Overall, the Master Plan provides council with a robust set of priorities and direction for the provision of facilities, services and funding programs at Alexandra Park, as well as ensuring broad community use. We will now pursue external funding opportunities to implement this important document.”

INTERNATIONAL HONOUR FOR HAMILTON’S WATER Independent experts have last month named Hamilton as having the second best tap water in the world. Samples from Wannon Water’s Hamilton Water Treatment Plant won silver at the International Water Tasting Competition in the United States. The event, held in the historic West Virginian spa town of Berkeley Springs, attracted entries in a number of categories including municipal water, purified water and sparkling water. Known as the Olympics of Water, it is the longest-running and largest water tasting competition in the world. The Hamilton water is sourced from the southern ranges of the Grampians National Park before being treated by Wannon Water and supplied to customers in Hamilton, Dunkeld and Tarrington. It was selected as the best tap water in blind taste testing at a local, state and national level before being entered in the 29th annual Berkeley Spring competition. Wannon Water’s longest-serving employee, operations manager John Harris was on hand to accept the international award, along with Western Treatment Operations Coordinator Tim Holmes. A panel of 10 expert judges and more than 300 members of the public were involved in the tasting session today. The winning water was from Clearbrook in British Columbia, Canada, which also won the prize last year and is the biggest medal winner in the event’s history. Wannon Water managing director Andrew Jeffers described the announcement as a coup for the Hamilton region. “Recognition on the international stage is a huge accolade for our dedicated team of employees,” Mr Jeffers said. “It’s not just an honour for Wannon Water but a win for the entire area, giving people a great reason to visit, live, work and invest in Hamilton, Dunkeld and Tarrington. We acknowledge, however, that we still have work to do to provide a similar level of satisfaction about the taste of water to customers in all our supply systems.” Mr Jeffers said Wannon Water is planning improvements to water treatment infrastructure across the region over the next four years. ‘We are also investigating options to improve water quality for customers in Portland, Port Fairy and Heywood.”

People sometimes say to me, “Robbie, are you still regularly jogging?’ I normally say something like, “Do you get a body like this without regularly jogging?” They say, “To be honest, I thought that not jogging or exercising is exactly how you get a body like that.” Then I say, “What do you mean by that?!” And they say, “I thought it was pretty obvious what I meant. No offense, but I’m saying you look a bit chubby.” And I say, “What do you mean no offense. You can’t just say no offense and think that makes any statement you say following it acceptable. That’s not how it works.” People who do this are one of my pet hates. By saying no offense, you are essentially making it clear you are saying something offensive, something you know full well is offensive, but you’re going to say it anyway. And if I do quite rightfully get offended, you’re going to act like there’s something wrong with me. I put “no offense” right up there with “I was just kidding”. That’s the statement you make when you forgot to say, “no offense”. “But I was just being honest,” they’ll say. “But there’s a difference between not being dishonest and choosing not to comment on something that might be a bit unkind, and choosing to be completely honest even though it is a hurtful nasty thing to say.” “I wouldn’t have any problems with you being honest with me,” they’ll say. “Well let’s test that out,” I’ll say. “Because I am a little overweight but I can work on that. You’re stuck with that face.” “Are you saying I’m ugly, mate?” they say. “I thought I was making that pretty obvious,” I say. “Let me make it clearer. If my dog had a face like that, I’d shave its butt and make it walk backwards. No offense.” For some reason they seem to have taken offense. What’s up with that? “So are you still jogging?” Apparently they’re not offended enough to just walk away and leave me alone. “Yes,” I answer, remembering how my problems started a couple of minutes ago. “Yeah, but for exercise or just chasing after the ice-cream truck?” they say. Should I take the fact that they didn’t say, “no offense” to mean that they were trying to offend me with this comment? “Have you thought of getting some sort of plastic surgery to make your face a little less scary for little children? No offense.” Well that’s what I think of saying, but I think there is still a place for tact and being polite in our modern world. “I’m still running,” I say. “Still aiming for three times a week. At the moment it’s four kilometre runs. I’d like to build my fitness up a bit more and then get back to running five ks. I haven’t been running as consistently as I’d like so my fitness isn’t quite where I’d like it to be.” “That still sounds pretty impressive…” they say. Maybe I read them all wrong. What a supportive thing to say. “…so maybe you need to look at your diet. Clearly the exercise is only a small part of solving your problem.” And that’s why I avoid leaving the house. If I’ve ever offended you email me at robbietansel@gmail.com No offense, but if anything I’ve ever said has offended you, you’re a moron. Just kidding.
LOCAL SPORT WEATHER WREAKS HAVOC WITH SUMMER SPORT FINALS The extreme heat on Friday and Saturday last week has wreaked havoc with summer sport finals with all junior and senior tennis grand finals forced to reschedule, with matches now set to be played on March 15 & 16. The heat policy was invoked for the Friday night junior matches, where the temperature was still above the cut off – 36 degrees – and the same issue faced the junior grades scheduled for Saturday morning. The afternoon temperature Saturday was always going to see the senior matches abandoned and fingers will now be crossed the worst of the heatwave conditions are over and the season deciders can be played in a fortnight’s time. Ladies Pennant bowls also had to abandon their Friday grand finals and a new date will be allocated in the coming week. The Open Pennant grand finals did go ahead thanks to some savvy planning and a little bit of luck with the grand finals allocated to the competition’s coastal clubs to help with temperature concerns – and with Robe and Kingston hosting, the show went on with the 2018/19 premiers decided in all grades. See page 41 for all the results. Softball was not in finals mode yet, but games were abandoned and rescheduled for mid week so the upcoming finals series can still progress as scheduled, while senior cricket also abandoned its final minor round and a full preview of the upcoming finals are on page 42. The Sims Shield matches were completed in semi final action in junior cricket, while the O’Donoghue Shield matches were thwarted by the heat policy and closure of finals venue Marist Park due to the extreme conditions and junior officials are continuing to work through what that will mean for this weekend's grand final. The Hall Trophy matches were able to be completed given they were programmed for Saturday and Sunday morning when conditions were more conducive to safe play. As you can see below, baseball cancelled all matches except the two Division One fixtures which were both played under lights in less oppressive conditions.
FINALS BERTH YET TO BE FINALISED All baseball except Division One was cancelled over the weekend due to the extreme weather conditions. Both Division One games were rescheduled to be played under lights in much cooler conditions. Friday night was the time rescheduled for the South Indians verse Central with Central aiming to confirm a spot in the finals. But it was not to be. South hung on from a fast finishing Magpies outfit to take a ten run to eight win. South fired up first in the bottom of the opening inning. Successive walks pitched to the first two batters in Ryan Placucci and Bruce Morale saw them both batted in by a three bagger to Dean Hamilton who in turn was batted in by a sacrifice fly from Ben Morale. Central returned fire in the top of the second. With two out, both Mark Kilpatrick and Lauchie Tilley were hit by the pitcher. Kilpatrick scored on Darren Smith’s single to left-field. Ethan Chuck picked a walk as did Brock Keding, which pushed Tilley home. Surprisingly, Kyall McClean also was thown a base on ball which pushed Smith across home plate before a third out was made. The Indians added two more in the bottom of the third to take back the lead. Hamilton hit safely to centrefield and Ben Morale singled to shortstop. Hamilton crossed home on Travis Lockwood’s hit to third and Morale crossed home on Steve Isaccson’s safehit to leftfield giving South a five run to three lead. McClean picked a base on ball in the top of the fifth and Nathan Meinck singled. McClean scored on a wild pitch before the Indians managed to shut down the assault on the scoreline. In the even fifth, South fired up. Bruce Morale got on board after his hit went through Central third baseman and Hamilton walked. Ben Morale singled scoring his brother, Lockwood also singled scoring Hamilton and then Isaccson hit safely for the second time to load the bases. cont. page 43

LOCAL SPORT SO CLOSE YET SO FAR The Pioneers women’s team came tantalisingly close to making the perfect start to the 2019 Premier League season but in the end the reigning champions, the North Adelaide Rockets, who went through the 2018 season undefeated, made some crucial plays in the dying minutes to steal the match with a 75-66 scoreline. Level at three quarter time, the Pioneers were poised to perhaps pull off the upset of the season in round one and, as expected, it was Amanda Frost (pictured) and Emily Winter that led the way, “We definitely got a taste for it and showed we were up for the challenge,” coach Matt Sutton said. And even though a victory would have shocked the Premier League competition, for the Pioneers line-up, the defeat was bitterly disappointing. “It was tough to swallow,” Sutton said. “Everyone played their role and had a moment that was really important for our team.” The Pioneers team was undersized and the tough work inside from TIGERS NO ROBINSON CRUSOE News that Kybybolite Football Club has been handed down fines, loss of points and suspensions for breaching salary cap regulations in 2018 was a welcome step in the right direction but it’s interesting to note that they still only finished eighth and there are many that believe that other clubs are finding ‘creative’ ways to secure players. Much like the Tour de France in the Lance Armstrong era, where if cyclists weren’t taking EPO they couldn’t compete, it feels like clubs in the region are in a similar position in that if they don’t spend big money to attract players they will be outmatched by the teams around them that do.I appreciate it must be very difficult to prove as both the clubs and the financially benefitting players are unlikely to come forth with information but it’s a safe bet that in most cases when a player is leaving their home town and driving a considerable distance to play elsewhere money would be a primary factor.
Melissa Russell and Keryl Ousey earned praise from the debutant coach. “The ability of Mel (Russell) and Keryl (Ousey) to just keep battling was really important for our team,” Sutton said. “They were awesome inside.” The other pleasing thing for Sutton was the ability of the girls on the floor to create the shots they wanted. “We were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over and we did get a lot of looks at the shots we wanted – some dropped, some didn’t but the pleasing thing was we were getting the shots we wanted,” he said. The debut performance from the girls certainly gave them a level of confidence going into Sunday’s fixture against Sturt although just how the group would pull up was an unknown. “It was a gruelling game, really physical and in pretty hot conditions,” Sutton said. Check out our facebook page for Sunday’s result. There were no stats available from the inaugural contest with the hosts citing internet issues but they will be
PLENTY OF IMPROVEMENT TO COME Scoring was an issue for the new look Pioneers men in their season opener against North Adelaide but for coach Richard Hill it is the next two weeks that will be crucial with the championship coach hopeful the Pioneers could split the opening road double, bouncing back from the 80-65 loss to North Adelaide with a win over Sturt (check our facebook page for Sunday’s result). Given the Pioneers had limited preparation as a team unit in the lead up to Saturday night’s season opener, the lack of chemistry, especially in offence, was no surprise and with now two weeks to hit the training court hard, Hill was confident the improvement would come, and quickly. “We will basically start our training camp on Tuesday,” Hill said. “We just haven’t done nearly enough to be prepared to play a decent level of basketball.” Import Kentrell Barkley was barely off the plane, having had one
training session, but Hill saw enough to know he will be a damaging player once he settles into the line-up. “He tried hard but wasn’t himself but he is going to be outstanding,” Hill said. The Pioneers started well enough and were level with the Rockets at the first change but it was the second quarter where the damage was done. “We always want to win so we weren’t happy with the result but I was not surprised that they beat us – I expected them to be very good,” Hill said. “They were another level to what we encountered during the pre-season. Right now were are not as athletic or as good as they are. It could have got away from us but in the end, the score probably reflected how much better they were.” But Hill knows that will come – the abbreviated and disrupted preparation for the season was unlikely to produce stellar results. And in the end, after quarter time the scoring dried up – an issue Hill

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY....AND MORE MONEY! Manny Machado’s record breaking baseball contract lasted all of one week with news that Bryce Harper has signed a 13 year $465million contract to play for Philadelphia making it the richest deal in baseball history.
RECORDS CONTINUE TO TUMBLE AHEAD OF WORLD CUP The West Indies scored 389 runs, their highest ever ODI score and still lost. The 389 was in response to a massive 6 for 418 posted by England. 46 sixes were blasted during the game with Chris Gayle (162 runs of 97 balls) hitting 14 sixes being matched by Jos Butler’s (150 runs off 77 balls) belting 12 sixes of his own.

Race thee of the Mount Gambier Cycling Club’s Summer Series saw 16 cyclists head off in warm and gusty conditions, which did slow the pace compared to the previous round. Amy Wight continued with her dominating winning streak, leading Mark Brooksby and club president Dean Zeven to the finish. Once again, the scratch group found themselves a few seconds short of catching the front bunch but Sean Angus recorded the fastest time in an effort to pass the trio. realises Sam Daly will certainly help alleviate, as well as this upcoming two weeks on the training court. “We were able to get some shots for Eze (Erik Burdon) early and that got us away but they smashed us in the second quarter and we couldn’t score,” Hill said. Skipper Tom Daly led from the front and top scored, while Barkley was the other key performer, with Lachie Hunter and Brayden Ousey showing they will soon be at home on the Premier League court. “It was a good learning experience for them,” Hill said. “Brayden was really good and Lachie was solid in the minutes they played.” Brad Rathjen’s return to top level basketball was also cause for optimism. LOCAL SPORT TITLE RACE BEGINS IN EARNEST
The weekend’s stifling heat saw the final round of the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association abandoned in line with the association’s heat policy and so now it is finals time for the senior grades. Reigning titleholders Penola have finished in a position not familiar to the Eagles – top of the ladder – and they will host West Gambier at McCorquindale this Saturday and Sunday. Penola’s victory in last season’s title decider was a fairytale for the success starved Eagles and they were the definitely underdogs before taking the drought breaking title. Penola boasts a similar line-up to last season’s champions and there is a wealth of quality and experience, headlined by allrounder Dave Somerfield, who has two centuries to his name in Barber Shield this season and is wily with ball in hand, boasting a five wicket haul as well this season. And Somerfield is not the only allrounder in the Eagles line-up – George Kidman can be relied upon to do damage with both bat and ball, as can Jack Mullan and Mick Waters. Then there’s the run making ability of skipper Jase Bateman, who is always well supported by Mark Smith and improved Jack Schulz and Lewis March. With the ball, much will be expected of Curt Evans, Brad Maney and Conrad Slabber, who was the surprise packet of the 2017/18 decider. So while Penola is fielding an experienced line-up, the Roos, their
semi final opponents are quite a new look line-up, so skipper Niall Easterbrook will need to be at the top of his game if West is to conjure an upset victory. Jake Blackwell and Bowen Hosking will also need to bring their A game to the semi final. Both are rising stars of the competition and both can compile big scores when conditions allow, with Hosking also damaging with ball in hand. Richard Crute looms as an X factor – the former South Gambier allrounder has played plenty of finals cricket and brings that experience to the table, while also the ability to singlehandedly turn a game with bat or ball. Sam Willis has elevated his game in 2018/19, while Jack Geddes has shown some promising late season form. Nick Bone and Connor Prior are two other young guns that also started to look comfortable in the top grade as the season progressed but it is hard to see the battle hardened reigning champions not advancing to the Barber Shield final. The other semi final looms as a tighter contest but North Gambier, who finished runner-up to Penola last season, loom as the favourites, and much like Penola, that is because they have such depth of both talent and experience. Jake Schutz, the reigning Bill Whitty Medallist, has enjoyed another stellar season and when you add Matt McInerney, Kieran Ashby and Michael Johnston to that top order, North has
players that can not only score but score big. Of course, if the top order stumbles, Nick McInerney, Kayne Badman, Mitch Lewis and Justin McConnell all have the ability to produce good scores with the bat. And the Tigers bowling stocks are equally impressive with Declan Kenny, who had an outstanding 2017/18 final, coming into the finals having been North’s most damaging strike bowler, while Tim Young also looms large. Not always snaring the wickets of his team mates, the skipper produces such consistent line and length and often holds up an end, forcing the opposition to attack the bowler at the other end. Both Nick and Matt McInerney have secured their fair share of wickets this season, while Ashby and Johnston are smart bowlers, who are hard to get away and also bowl wicket taking balls. The Tigers might be favourites but South certainly has some class acts of its own with Dylan Clough capable of having an influence with both bat and ball, as can Robbie Drenthen. Having multi-title winning wicketkeeper Josh Thompson back in the Barber Shield lineup certainly strengthens the Maroons, not just because of his impressive glove work, but he is so reliable with the bat and has plenty of practice at anchoring innings for South, and he is also coming off an impressive 91 only a couple of rounds ago. Michael Sims also brings that same level of
2019 CLAY SEASON KICKS OFF The 2019 Sporting Clay season kicked off at Burrungule Park over the Australia Day weekend with a 50 target Compak event sponsored by Galpins Accountants, Aussie Disposals & Barry Sims. Sixty-two shooters nominated in near perfect conditions to tackle the two courses set up by Ken Atkin and his crew. Coming in with 48/50 were Jeremy Kent, Gavin Dyson and Terry Scicluna, the resulting shoot off turned into an endurance event of which Gavin Dyson prevailed to take out the Gambier Shooting Supplies High Gun, whilst Kent had to be satisfied with winning AA Grade from Leigh Dunn and Chris Wright. Scicluna had to be content with winning A Grade from Tim Widdison and Tony Sellars. Cameron Scheidl won B grade shooting 42/50, from Bruce Oakley and Romain Devaud, whilst a red hot Michael Gates dominated C grade with 43/50 from Frank Kentish and Al Scheidl. Seniors was

experience to the line-up, while David Vine is the X factor – the flamboyant stroke maker has the skills to turn any game on its head. Cam Jorgenson will lead the bowling attack after one of his most consistent seasons, while young gun Adam Kuhl has showed some impressive form with both bat and ball and could well be one of the surprise packets of the semi final – a semi final that still sees North in the box seat to earn another shot at a Barber Shield title. LOCAL SPORT GRABBING HIS OPPORTUNITIES WITH BOTH HANDS As we look at the local basketballers that have either been selected in the SA Country Under 18 teams for the upcoming national championships next month or as Pioneers squad members, or in some cases, both, we profile the young career of Jaidyn Lawrence, who has been given an opportunity as a Pioneers development player, and is a reserve for the Under 18 SA Country team. JAIDYN LAWRENCE Compared to many players his age, Jaidyn is a relative newcomer to basketball and initially it wasn’t even his choice. The now 16 year old, started playing basketball four years ago when mum Josie thought he should pick up a second sport to supplement his football and basically dropped him at the stadium. “I wasn’t overly impressed with her at the time but after that first game I gradually began to really enjoy the game,” Jaidyn said. It is a decision that has proved to be genius with Jaidyn showing a real aptitude for the game, and, has now stepped away from football to concentrate on basketball. He has gone from reluctant participant to living and breathing the sport, involved not just in local competition, Lakers representative basketball and SA Country but also the strong basketball program at Tenison Woods College and, now, the Pioneers program. “I have
been lucky that Tenison has offered plenty of basketball opportunities for me as well with their Titans and High Performance Program they have running,” Jaidyn said. “They have been very flexible and supportive towards my sports pathway.” The Tenison program is headed by Pioneers head
coach Richard Hill and captain Tom Daly, so for Jaidyn, he is receiving the best coaching, not only at school. But with his inclusion in the Pioneers men’s program for 2019. “I can already see the hard work and dedication that’s required in a team of this high level,” Jaidyn said. “The guys all work extremely hard and are very encouraging and helpful. I know that I’ve got a lot to learn and a lot of work ahead of me. I am hoping to learn a lot from the guys, especially Richard Hill. There is a wealth of knowledge to be gained and I am keen to learn as much as I can to gain experience. Being involved with the team is a massive honour and I am very thankful for this opportunity that has come around and I am keen to see where it takes me. I know I’m in the right environment and certainly with the right people so I am thankful for that.” And Jaidyn is all too aware of the other mentors over his short career that have seen him already reach this point of his career. Sonya Knight, Dan Stratford, Bryan Green, who is currently part of the Pioneers women’s coaching panel, and Trevor Semmens have all played their role. “It is because of these people that I play basketball and have had the opportunities I’ve had,” Jaidyn said. “I’m very lucky and I wish to thank them for all their efforts as I value what they have done very much.
They have given a lot of their time and given me opportunities. I’m learning lots and I think it puts me in a good place for the future and I am excited for that.” Of course, many of those coaches have been part of Jaidyn’s SA Country journey, which started at Under 14 level, and gave Jaidyn his first taste of elite basketball. “Being exposed to a higher level of basketball has really opened my eyes to strive to be the best I can possibly be,” he said. “I’ve made some great friends along the way and they have pushed me to become better as a player and a person. SA Country has been very important in to me and the NITP trainings that are held offer a major experience to grow to become better.” So, at the moment, Jaidyn is rarely far from a basketball court, training with the Pioneers, with the Premier League season kicking off at the weekend, as well as still heading to Adelaide for the SA Country trainings in preparation for the nationals, if he ends up being required, and aside from that, Jaidyn is just looking to continually improve and see where his game takes him. “I need to put my head down and work hard as I have some of the best coaching in the area, as well as working with some of the best players, so I am willing to give 110% and then just see what the future holds for me and my basketball.”
strikeouts, left five runners on base and made two errors. Central had seven safehits, seven base on ball, three hit pitched ball, seven strikeouts, left ten runners on base and made two errors. Federal kept its finals hopes alive with a surprise victory over Tigers. Federal had 13 safehits, four base on ball, seven strikeouts, made three errors and left 11 runners on base. Tigers had seven safehits, six base on ball, 10 strikeouts, made four errors and left seven runners on base. Tigers and South Indians will finish the minor round in positions one and two respectively and it leaves a mouthwatering finish as to who will third out of Federal and Central. They play for the Taylor/Probert shield in the late game thisSaturday night and the winner who gets their name inscribed on the shield will also play South Indians in the preliminary final the following Saturday. Although Federal are ahead by two points, should Central win they will make the final by virtue of having the least number of
defensive runs. The two best pitchers in the league will face off and be doing their darndest to make a win happen for their team. FINALS BERTH YET TO BE FINALISED FROM PAGE 39 Ben Nash’s deep hit to leftfield resulted in all three runners scoring but Nash was thrown out attempting to make third in a 7-6-2-5 play by the Central fielders. This gave South a 10 run to four run advantage. Central fought back hard in the top of the eighth. Smith singled to left-field as did Keding and McClean was hit by the pitcher loading the bases. Smith crossed home on Meinck’s out at first and both Keding and McClean scored on Dylan Chuck’s safehit to rightfield. He scored on Kobbe Chant’s single also to rightfield before the required three outs leaving the Magpies short by two runs. Chuck came on to pitch at the top of the sixth shutting down the Indian batters for the remainder of the game and the coach may rue the choice not to make that change, when the score was only one run different, an inning earlier. South had eleven safehits, six base on ball, three
