COVER • A PASSION FOR DISABILITY CARE Local disability experts, Community Living Australia, have launched a new program in the Limestone Coast and are inviting people to be part of the Engage Program. Running from 9am to 3pm, the Engage Program is a community-based program, getting people out and about and engaged in their local community, while developing much needed life skills. Aimed at people 18 years and over, with a children’s program to also be launched soon, the Engage Program is also continuing to build partnerships with a variety of community groups and businesses to support people who have been isolated to be active members of community. The Mount Gambier program kicked off in February and sees clients experiencing lawn bowls through the Mount Gambier RSL & District Bowls Club, cooking lessons, including planning menus and shopping , swimming lessons at the Jubilee Motor Inn and a coffee club at the Mount Gambier Library. The Millicent program is also underway and sees clients heading to the Millicent Bowls Club for lawn bowls, working on a garden bed at Lake McIntyre, working alongside a local craft group, learning new skills at the Men’s Shed and computer lessons at the Millicent Library. A Kingston program is also in the process of being developed to service the local community there.. “The Engage Program is all about community participation,” Regional

Coordinator Cynthia Gerritsen said. “The program looks to develop the independence of people and get them connected with the local community.” Community Living Australia has been running in-house programs but wanted to branch out into the community and that is how the Engage Program was born. Community Living Australia is looking to hear from anyone who would like to become involved in the program, either as a participant, or as a community group that could partner with Community Living Australia to be part of the program. Ms Gerritsen said the program was always evolving. “It is not meant to be a stagnant program,” she said. “It is a program that will continue to change. It is exciting and we really want to encourage as many people as possible to get involved..” The Engage Program is typical of the community-minded approach

Community Living Australia has to its role in the disability sector. “We are committed to improving our local community and supporting people with disability to achieve their goals. We have an amazing team that are committed to delivering the best outcomes for our clients,” said Ms Gerritsen. Community Living Australia services the entire Limestone Coast, offering Accommodation services; In-home Support, respite and skill building, recreational and social services. “We are all about doing things with, not for, our clients,” Ms Gerritsen said. “ It is about supporting people to reach their full potential and to achieve the goals they have for their life.” Community Living Australia prides itself on client matching and ensuring clients work with a support team who understand their needs. LINES REIGNS SUPREME IN THE WILD WEST It all came down to the last race but in the end, Mount Gambier’s Steve Lines defied the odds, and picked up his second World Series Sprintcar (WSS) Championship – adding to his breakthrough title in 2013/14. Uncontracted for this season, and having not been part of the WSS circus for a couple of seasons, Lines started this season with no intention of heading West for these final two rounds but his strong start to the season and the consistency he was able to enjoy over the early rounds saw the Mount Gambier driver in contention and in the end, he decided to go for gold. “I think it took the pressure off this season when we decided not to race the whole series so then when we got

the results, it just made sense to see it through,” Lines said. “It was great to finish off like this.” Leading by seven points going into the final race, Lines also had to fend off a last corner assault from Kerry Madsen but, as he has all season, Lines was calm and in control and the car backed him up. “This is a tough to championship to win,” Lines said. “I am really proud of everyone who has been involved and been there for me when the pressure’s on. It can be easy to make a mistake once we got down to that last race when basically it came down to whoever finished in front.” Starting on the front row at the Perth Motorplex, Lines was in a three

way battle with Kerry Madsen and James McFadden for the title. McFadden chose the inside line for the feature race on a race track where most teams came equipped with a harder leftrear, however Lines locked into the front spot after the first rotation only marginally staying ahead of McFadden and Madsen as all three battled for the lead in the opening laps. Lines created some significant space while Madsen and McFadden traded positions corner for corner until Tom Payet brought on the first caution on lap 12 after stopping in the front straight. Then on the restart, Brooke Tatnell seemingly appeared from nowhere to displace Madsen for third and add another contender to the already busy podium battle. McFadden came within striking distance of Lines on numerous occasions until lap 19 as the leader passed two backmarkers with a monumental slide job into turn four, forcing them to brake and consequently leave McFadden with nowhere to go. The four-time WSS champion clouted the turn four wall hard, sending the #W17 skyward and into a bone jarring landing to end his campaign. On the restart, Madsen regained the second spot from Tatnell, while Rusty Hickman had advanced to fourth before a close call with Kaiden Manders led Hickman into a spin but able to avoid on-coming traffic. Meanwhile Jason Kendrick was on his way to claiming the American Racer Hard Charger for a second night in succession, progressing from 22nd on the grid to 4th by lap 22, joining Tatnell

to battle for the last spot on the podium, finally prevailing on lap 27 to secure third. Madsen was trying everything to make gains on Lines, coming close on multiple occasions until he made one last concerted lunge on the final turn to just fall short by .728 of a second with a further 1.3 seconds back to Kendrick. Lines drove into victory lane to one of the loudest cheers in Motorplex history, as the 2013-14 champion not only claimed his second series win, but the first for Horrell Motorsport and crew chief Dave Sharman. “I think we showed what you can do as a team when you get the car right – it gives everyone confidence,” Lines said.

“I truly believe we have had a better year this year than the last time I won and that all comes down to confidence.” Above - Steve Lines claims the 2018/19 World Series Sprintcar Championship. NEW FORMAT GETS THE THUMBS UP

The revamped Bayside Festival – Bay Escape – looks to have hit the jackpot with the change of day, month and format and organisers could not be happier with how the new look festival has been received. Organising committee chairman Ryan Donovan said all the feedback on the new look event had been positive and while there will be the usual debriefing, the reimagined festival looks to have found a winning formula. “I got around to as many of the vendors as possible on the day and some also sought me out and the response from vendors and the people that attended has been really positive,” Ryan said. Around 4000 people headed to Port MacDonnell for the food and wine festival, which has morphed from

a Sunday foreshore event to a street party on Saturday. “That certainly seems to have worked for us and given what else was on the weekend we are really happy with that,” Ryan said. “It is also the most people I can remember still being there at the end of the day for many years. People were not only coming to have a look – they were staying.” Full bus loads continued to arrive at the Bay Escape, courtesy of the complimentary service, and with plenty of food and wine, entertainment and other stalls and activities, the festival, only hampered a little by the infamous strong winds at Port MacDonnell, brought the seaside town alive. “It had a really good atmosphere and a really good vibe,” Ryan said. “The

support from the community has been fantastic and it has been a huge few months for the hard working organising committee. There is a sense of relief for the committee that we have managed to pull this off. We are pretty proud of how it all ended up. We definitely all went home with smiles on our faces. Everyone seems to be happy with the direction we have taken.” The weekend was a packed one in terms of events across the region with the Frances Folk Gathering and Heywood Wood, Wine & Roses events, both which call that last weekend in February home every year, so the Bay Escape chair admits the date might need to be tinkered with but the general consensus at this early stage is that the new format is a winner. lifestyle1.net | 04

TRAGEDY STRIKES FURY ON THE BAY After a strong opening day of racing at the weekend’s 2019 World Championship Selection Race at Robe at the weekend, tragedy struck with two competitors both in critical condition, as of Sunday, one in Flinders Medical Centre and one at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, while two other competitors were nursing minor injuries, including cracked ribs. The accident, which happened on the last lap of the last race on Saturday saw the cancellation of the remainder of the Ski Racing Australia meet. “Sadly, there are two young men who are in bad shape,” Robe event coordinator Jamie Aitken said. “It was a racing accident in a dangerous, high octane sport and our thoughts are with the two guys and their families.”

AT A GLANCE

NEW PARKING ARRANGEMENTS AT ATTAMURRA ROAD MCDONALD’S The City of Mount Gambier will install no stopping zones on the north side of Jubilee Highway East on either side of the Attamurra Road intersection to improve traffic safety. The decision was made at last week’s council meeting, following a report to council and complaints from motorists regarding restricted sight distance for vehicles leaving Attamurra Road due to trucks and caravans parking along the roadway to go to the McDonald’s restaurant. “Semi-trailers and caravans are parking opposite McDonald’s and west of Attamurra Road which makes it very difficult for other motorists to see past them as they enter the intersection or leave the McDonald’s car park,” city infrastructure general manager Nick

Serle said. “Whilst Jubilee Highway is a Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) road, council is responsible for the implementation and establishment of parking restrictions on DPTI roads. Council has consulted with the department on this matter and DPTI supported council’s recommendation to implement parking restrictions along Jubliee Highway to establish safe intersection sight lines.” The no stopping zones will be effective following the installation of signage which is expected to occur within the coming weeks. Council also resolved to write to DPTI to request that it maintains the section of road to the east of Jubilee Highway East, Attamurra Road that has been damaged due to trucks parking on it.

DRIVER MENTORS RECOMMEND JOINING TRAINING PROGRAM Heywood’s Rhonda and Peter Barrand have been mentors for the L2P Program since it was first offered in Heywood and still love their role as a volunteer driver just as much today. “There is a great sense of satisfaction when you see your mentee get their probationary licence after all of the hours you have been driving together,” Rhonda said. “You feel as if you have achieved something for the community even if it is only something small. The few hours a week we volunteer truly enriches our lives and we feel more connected to the

community because of it.” The Glenelg L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program offers training for all of its volunteers and is alsways on the look out for more mentors to join the popular nad effectie driver training initiative. The training is free and will equip you with the necessary skills and resources to help guide our next generation of motorists. To register your interest for the mentor training, please contact program coordinator Rachel Brough on (03)5522 2334 or email rbrough@glenelg.vic. gov.au Potential mentors will need to discuss their eligibility prior to the training session.

DUNKELD ARTIST SET TO BE SHOWCASED AT HAMILTON GALLERY Hamilton Gallery is set to showcase the work of local artist Anne Fleming in an exhibition running from April 6- 28, in conjunction with Australian Studio Ceramics. Anne is a Dunkeld based artist who graduated from the Visual Arts course at Deakin University with a prize for high achievement in fine art and, who, has since, won a number of other industry awards. Since the 1970s, Hamilton Gallery has been adding studio ceramics to the permanent collection and the gallery also has a proud history of showcasing local talent. Anne’s exhibition taps into both those priorities, following in the footsteps of recent exhibitions featuring Bruce Slorach, Phonse McGrath, Trevor Flinn and Judy Warne.

Go to www.onefortyone.com for FEEDBACK SOUGHT ON MCLAUGHLIN PARK ACCESS & PARKING Staged construction of internal roads and car parking in the McLaughlin Sports Park in Millicent continues and Wattle Range Council is seeking feedback from users on a proposal to close one of the Plunkett Terrace entrances to the complex. The McLaughlin Park infrastructure project has progressed to the area adjacent to Peter Seebohm Stadium along Plunkett Terrace. Whilst consulting with the McLaughlin Sports Park Incorporated group on the project, council has been asked to consider closing the Plunkett Terrace access gate into the precinct. The gate, which is near both the basketball stadium and soccer pitch, would remain as an emergency access point or entrance for special

events if required. However, it would remain shut at all other times. Council is proposing to maintain the two other entrances located on Williams Road and Park Terrace. “The closure of the Plunkett Terrace gate enables a better management of traffic flow, an increase the number of formal car parking bays available and improved pedestrian safety,” Wattle Range Council CEO Ben Gower said. “We want to hear the thoughts of the community on what impact this closure might have on their use of the complex and the facilities within it before a final decision is made.” The consultation closes on Thursday, March 7, and written submissions can be emailed, posted or left at any of council’s offices, prior to close of business on that day.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - PLASTIC NOT FANTASTIC… By ROBBIE TANSEL Years from now, when people of the future look back at the year 2019, there will be one thing we do that they

Vegan chocolate cake 375g packet dark compound cooking chocolate, chopped 2 x 400ml cans coconut milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 1/2 cups self-raising flour

2 teaspoons baking powder 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed 2 tablespoons cocoa 375g strawberries, hulled, halved 1/3 cup coconut chips, toasted

Method Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-forced. Grease a 6cm-deep, 20cm round cake pan. Line base and side with baking paper. Place 150g of the chocolate, 2½ cups of the coconut milk and the vanilla in a microwavesafe bowl. Microwave on HIGH (100%), stirring every 30 seconds, for 1 minute 30 seconds or until mixture is smooth. Sift flour, baking powder, sugar and cocoa into a large bowl. Make a well. Add chocolate mixture. Whisk to combine. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre of cake comes out clean. Stand in pan for 10 minutes. Turn onto a wire rack, top-side up, to cool completely. Place remaining chocolate and coconut milk in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on HIGH (100%), stirring every 30 seconds, for 1 minute 30 seconds or until mixture is smooth. Stand for 2 hours to thicken slightly. Split cake in half horizontally. Spread 1/2 the ganache over bottom half of cake. Top with remaining half. Spread remaining ganache over top of cake. Decorate with strawberries. Sprinkle with coconut. Serve.

will shake their heads at. You know how we look back at the early (and not so early) twentieth century and can’t believe people commonly treated people poorly based on the colour of their skin. We look back at that and just can’t understand how that happened or why someone would even want it to. (Having said that, there are still people who do that today.) Likewise we can’t believe people in the eighteenth century thought they could solve the issues of a toothache by electrifying the tooth, or by inserting a garlic clove in their ear. In the 1840s people believed that the size and shape of your head determined your behaviour (phrenology). Let’s not forget that people believed the Earth was flat for thousands of years, and feared the possibility of falling off the edge. What is the modern equivalent that people will not be able to believe decades or centuries from now? The way we continue to use plastic. When I say they’ll shake their heads at us decades or centuries into the future, the way we’re using plastic, there may only be cockroaches left to shake their heads at

us by that stage. We’re doing an amazing job of completely destroying the planet. That’s something to really think about. When I was a kid at school I cared about the environment. I thought the environment was really important. Teachers would teach us about the environment and how to care about it. Everyone cared about it. Now no one cares about the environment. Well that’s not exactly true. People care about the environment provided it doesn’t get in the way of doing whatever they want. They’ll avoid using plastic except in the case of straws because paper ones get all soggy. We reduce, reuse and recycle except for all the new stuff we need to buy even though we’ve got a perfectly fine version of it already and we just want the newer one because we think it fills the big, empty hole in our heart. Coles are one of the absolute leaders in wasting plastic and have done it again recently. I don’t know when the idea

of plastic giveaways with purchases originated and I’m fairly sure that Coles isn’t where it started but I think they’re an excellent example of how ridiculous it is. Last year we had the idiocy of tiny versions of common supermarket items being given away when you spent a certain amount on groceries. Tiny Vegemite jars. Tiny packets of noodles. Tiny washing detergent. And that wasn’t enough of a waste of plastic so they needed to wrap them in plastic. Now we of course have the stupidity that is little plastic vegetables with suction cups attached to the bottom of them (again wrapped in plastic). I’m guessing they would justify this ridiculous destruction of the environment by consoling themselves that they’re encouraging our children to eat healthy. You can tell that children are stupid because they’re excited by the stupid plastic suction cup vegetables. They won’t eat vegetables but if they don’t have every one of the stupid plastic suction cup vegetables they’ll scream their lungs out. We all know the next thing that we’re going to have to suffer through over the next month is desperate parents on Facebook seeing if anyone has a spare Percy Pumpkin they can swap for Betty Banana. Then we’ll all get to read news stories about how someone is selling ultra rare Connor Corns on eBay for $700. I think we all know it’s incredibly important that parents have full sets of the stupid plastic suction cup vegetables when they donate them in the op shop bins three months from now. It’s really important that we do irreversible damage to the environment so little Jimmy can have a day and a half of fun. Here’s an idea Coles (and Woolworths and every other damn big business). For every thirty dollars we spend, how about you donate the seven cents you spent destroying our environment and exploiting poor people in some Asian country, to farmers or poor people or something that matters. Maybe donate it to some organisation that is trying to improve the environment and let us buy our groceries without treating us like idiots. If you’d like to be remembered as part of the people who destroyed a planet, email me at robbietansel@gmail. com

the Commonwealth Games medallist and former Casterton resident. “We are delighted to kick off our Women in Sport breakfast series in Casterton and it is only fitting that we launch these events on International Women’s Day to help recognise the role of women in sport,” he said. “Casterton locals will be all too familiar with the success story of Kathryn Mitchell, who has received tremendous international success for her athletic abilities, including most recently at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Queensland. Kathryn will take the opportunity to reflect on her achievements, as well as discussing how we can work towards levelling the playing field for women and girls in sport and active recreation. Casterton’s John Coxon, 2019 Glenelg Shire Joint Senior Citizen of the Year, will also present at the breakfast on the rise of participation rates and inclusive practices for women. The breakfast is open to all men, women, boys and girls and is a great opportunity to hear from local leaders regarding their experience in sport and the growing focus on women in sport both on and off field.” The event is $15 per person which includes a cooked breakfast, guest speakers and an International Women’s Day Pack. To book your place at the breakfast please book online through Try Booking via: https://www. trybooking.com/BATKJ. Alternatively, bookings can also be made by calling South West Sports on (03)5561 1689.

LANDCARE JOINS FORCES WITH TATIARA ART PRIZE The 2019 State Community Landcare Conference is very excited to partner with the Tatiara District Council in the 2019 Tatiara Art Prize. Established by the Tatiara District Council in 2013, originally designed to promote emerging artists, the prize has flourished and developed into a significant award and is seen as an important exhibition for Bordertown’s Walkway Gallery. Discovering new talents, invigorating artistic passions while supporting artists from across the State has seen the Tatiara community acquire an impressive and notable collection of artworks in iconic styles that reflect the spirit and the changing face of the Australian art scene. Held every two years, the $10,000 acquisitive prize invites submissions of new wall-based work by Australian artists of any theme and medium, other than photography. This year, the Tatiara Art lifestyle1.net | 08

Prize is thrilled to be offering three new prizes. First, local and visiting artists have the opportunity enter artwork created in and of the local community for a Local Art Prize of $1500. The public will also have the chance to vote for their favorite throughout the exhibition for a People’s Choice Prize of $500. The Landcare Unearthed Emerging Young Artists Awards, open to all artists under 17, captures the theme for the 2019 State Community Landcare Conference of ‘Landcare Unearthed – Celebrating Diversity, Managing Landscapes’. The conference wants young people to capture the Tatiara from their view with the challenges of climate change, jobs, school and families in mind. Closing dates for applications are July 31 and August 30, respectively, with artwork to be delivered September 11-14 and the announcement of the 2019 Tatiara Art Prize to be made on September 20 at the official opening. The 2019 State Community Landcare Conference will be held from October 27-30 and will showcase Bordertown and the Tatiara region, bringing registrants from across South Australia and interstate, and will include the announcement of the Landcare Unearthed Emerging Young Artists Awards at the Welcome Reception on 28/10/19. Entries for the Tatiara Art Prize officially opened on Friday.

CLASSICAL GENUIS WITH A TWIST HEADING TO HELPMANN STAGE Charismatic Finnish violin virtuoso Pekka Kuusisto brings international fame and a wicked sense of humour and personality to all his performances and this weekend he is set to direct the ACO Collective, an ensemble that combines Australia’s most talented emerging string players with the professional musicians of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, at Mount Gambier’s Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre. Kuusisto, now in his fourth year as ACO Collective Artistic Director, has put together a unique program around Haydn’s Symphony No. 47 in G major, nicknamed “The Palindrome”. The concert will also feature the world premiere of two works by Australian composer, Heather Shannon, pianist of indie rock band The Jezabels, commissions by ACO for this tour. The Mount Gambier concert is on March 2. The Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra will have the opportunity to play alongside ACO Collective musicians in string workshops tailored in collaboration with local string teachers and ensemble leaders.

COMMUNITY WELLBEING CENTRE ONLY WEEKS AWAY FROM CONSTRUCTION Construction of the Community Wellbeing Centre at Boandik Lodge’s Lake Terrace site is only weeks away from getting underway. Community support, through donations, has been overwhelming, especially considering the project cost has now been estimated at $6million, a higher cost than originally anticipated. “We are very appreciative of the support we have received through the Community Partnership Program, which is currently $205,000 and will continue to promote the program, seek grants and organise fundraising events to support the construction of the centre,” Boandik Lodge CEO Gillian McGinty said. Mossop Construction and Interiors have been appointed as the builder for the project. “We look forward to working with Mossop’s to achieve a quality outcome with this build,” Mrs McGinty said. “The architects, Thomson Adsett, have worked closely with Boandik staff and the team of consultants to develop a plan that will meet the needs of the community for many years to come.” The Community Wellbeing Centre will include a hydrotherapy pool, boasting two forms of assisted access with a ramp into the pool and lifting equipment to enable people of all abilities to experience the benefits of hydrotherapy. The community activity spaces and gymnasium will enable expansion of programs to support people to remain independent and connected with the community as they age. There will also be meeting rooms in the centre that can be accessed by community groups.

Successful recipients are expected to participate in activities that support career awareness in STEM and dispositions for STEM learning. Cleoni and her mentor and science teacher Sarah Edwards attended an induction to the program in Adelaide in February where they focused on specific STEM activities and relationship building at Adelaide University. “I am starting to make connections between what I am learning in Science class and my everyday life,” Cleoni said. “I enjoy understanding how and why things happen in my life with scientific reasoning. I feel privileged to be offered this scholarship and I believe it will open up more opportunities to me in the future”.

ENTRIES NOW OPEN FOR TWO PRESTIGIOUS ART & DESIGN AWARDS Entries are now being called for two of the feature events of the 2019 Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival – the 2019 John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize and the 2019 Design Prize. This year - with the generous support from longtime sponsor The Balnaves Foundation – the prize money for the John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize will total $10,000, with a further Local Art Prize of $1000 also on offer thanks to the generous sponsorship of local festival supporter and legend Lois Hodge. “The John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize is a highly anticipated event of the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival – both for entrants and festival goers – and is the springboard to the festival,” said fesitval president Cate

Bell. “It has previously attracted a wide range of entries from artists working in a two dimensional medium from within this region and beyond, and has firmly made its mark on the artists’ calendar.” The Balnaves Foundation has been generous sponsors of the John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize since 2011. The Balnaves Foundation is a private philanthropic organisation established in 2006 by Neil Balnaves AO to provide support to charitable enterprises across Australia. The John Shaw Acquisitive Art Prize is open to all emerging and established artists from throughout Australia and must be inspired by the works of this early Penola poet. As in past years, a Local Art Prize is open to those artists residing within the Limestone Coast, as a further encouragement for the local community to get involved. “For those considering entering for the first time, it really is a wonderful opportunity to be part of a dynamic Festival whilst acknowledging Neilson’s place in Penola’s history,“ said Ms Bell. Also calling for entries is the 2019 Design Prize of $1000, sponsored by the Penola & Districts Business Association and PQR Regional Produce, which sees the winner’s graphic

The Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival will be held over four days in May, with the announcement of the 2019 John Shaw Neilson Art prize and 2019 Design prize winners marking the official opening of the festival on Thursday, May 16, at the Penola High School. REFUGEE SECURES SOROPTIMIST EDUCATION GRANT Thai born refugee Hsa Yu Moo Ler has been announced as the recipient of the Soroptimist Mount Gambier 2019 Education Grant. Born in a camp on the Burmese border, Has arrived in Mount Gambier two years ago, having pent the previous 11 years in a variety of towns and a variety of schools. But what Hsa has always been focussed on is getting a good education, with that being one of the key messages from camp elders when she was growing up. The, now 19 year old, is set to take up a place at the university in Adelaide to study a Bachelor of Nursing and the $2000 grant is a godsend. “By the end of Year 12 I knew I wanted to attend university but I also understood the financial pressure that would place on my parents and our large family,” Hsa said. “I intend to use every dollar of it towards my university course to improve myself and become a person who can benefit others in the future.” Soroptimist president Jennie Elliott described Hsa as a “very worthy recipient.” The 2019 Education Grant has seen the Mount Gambier club top the $30,000 in student assistance. Female students in their final year of school can apply by submitting an essay of approximately 500 words outlining their career goals together with a brief autobiography and an outline of the proposed use of the Education Grant. The grant program dates back to the early 1990s when Mount Gambier Soroptimist member and educator Mim Ingham saw the lifestyle1.net | 24

ARTS FUNDING ON OFFER Funding is available to support regional artists and community groups for projects that inspire arts and cultural activity in rural, regional and remote areas of South Australia. Regional artists who are looking to develop their arts practice, or artists and organisations who are keen to create with their communities through innovative arts projects are encouraged to apply. Country Arts SA administers two funding rounds in March and August of each year which are delivered under two main categories: • Step Out grants are open to individuals, and communities to partner with professional artists and arts organisations, to create high quality arts projects that build capacity for long term benefits and increase professional development. • Step Up grants are open to artists, organisations and community groups to undertake small cultural projects, or for individual artists across all art forms to undertake professional development

opportunities, such as mentorships. If you have never applied to Country Arts SA or never undertaken an arts project you are encouraged to apply to this category. Country Arts SA also delivers the Skills Development grant program. This grant can assist individual artists or groups to provide innovative skills development opportunities through workshops, or provide opportunities for the development of project ideas and concepts. Individual artists, across all art forms, can now apply to the Skills Development grant program to pursue unique development opportunities. The Quick Response grant is available throughout the year to support regional artists to access professional arts development and training opportunities, or organisations and communities with small project opportunities that arise at short notice. Country Arts SA offers experienced advice and support from Arts and Cultural Facilitators who can assist with applications and project content. Arts and Cultural Facilitators are based throughout regional South Australia. The Regional Arts Fund is administered on behalf of the Australian Government by Regional Arts Australia and its member organisations which include Country Arts SA. For more information on the grants and eligibility criteriavisit https://www.countryarts.org.au/grantsfunding/ Grants close on August 15.

NEW LIFE FOR MOUNT GAMBIER’S NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATIONS Putting together an organising committee for Mount Gambier’s New Year’s Eve celebrations has been expecially challenging in recent years and the 2018 organising committee pre-warned the public last year’s event could be the last. But as this community so often does, passionate individuals have risen to the challenge with 11 members elected to the New Year’s Eve Committee, allowing chair, and one of the driving forces behind establishing the event, Steve Toope, to walk away safe in the knowledge the celebrations are in good hands. It is the highest members of the committee in the past six years. The committee is set to host its first meeting Monday, March 4,to begin the process of organising the 2019 celebrations. New chair Bert Bacher is excited by the challenge and is thrilled to have a group of enthusiastic community minded people with which to to work. “I am looking forward to the first meeting to start to discuss the celebrations and to continue with the tradition of providing a family friendly event for all the community to enjoy,” Mr Bacher said. “Now that the uncertainty of the event is behind us, we can move forward with the planning and we wish to let all know the celebrations will be staged. All the members of the committee strongly believe the NYE celebrations need to continue as it is too good an event to let it fold. We hope all of the current sponsors will continue to support the event and over the coming months the committee members will be making contact to discuss sponsorship with them. Without sponsors we could not put on the celebrations and it is important we recognise the invaluable contribution all our sponsors make.” New Year’s Eve Committee Chair – Bert Bacher Vice Chair - Jason Newman Secretary - Lyn Masters Assistant - Joy Ireland Treasurer - Maxine Tuffnell Assistant - Lee Hellyer Board members –Neil Quick; Jeni Jackson; Scott Turner; Megan Midwinter & Doug Flier lifestyle1.net | 26

HEYWOOD SET TO BE SHOWCASED ON NATIONAL TELEVISION The Heywood Truck and Ute Show will be broadcasted on screens across the world as popular Australian reality TV series Outback Truckers was in the region last weekend to film the event as part of an upcoming episode. Presenter Glenn ‘Yogi’ Kendall from Outback Truckers appeared at The Heywood Truck and Ute Show, which took place as part of the Wood, Wine and Roses festival on 23 February, with the reality program filming his guest appearance. Outback Truckers has aired across the Seven Network since 2012 and focuses on selected truck drivers and the challenges they face on Australia’s rural highways. The show has been broadcasted internationally and has most recently been picked up by streaming giant Netflix for its American viewers. Heywood Truck and Ute Show event organiser Lindy Annett described the news as “sensational”. “It was just fantastic to have our Truck and Ute Show featured as part of the Outback Truckers series, the exposure the show will give not only our event, but Heywood itself, will be unparalleled,” she said. “Yogi appeared at the event

last year and confirmed he would return again, however when we received the news that he was bringing the television crew with him this time we were ecstatic, it is the best outcome we could have ever hoped for. Fans of the show will be all too familiar with Yogi and the many fascinating stories behind Kendall Trucking. The Heywood Truck and Ute show has grown from a small side attraction to a nationally recognised event and we hope that this international publicity will further help to promote our event and the Wood Wine and Roses festival, as well as the important role that our trucking industry plays for South West Victoria.” The Heywood Truck and Ute show offers truck drivers a chance to display their vehicles and compete for prizes across various categories. To catch up with all the resjults from this year’s event visit the Heywood Truck and Ute Show Facebook’s page. BENDIGO BANK SCHOLARSHIP GOES TO DENTAL STUDENT Mount Gambier High School student Lucy Lockwood has been awarded this year’s Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a firsttime tertiary student whose financial circumstances might mean that a university degree is out of their reach. Lucy, who achieved an ATAR of 97.85, at Mount Gambier High School, in 2016, plans to use the local award to undertake first time tertiary study in a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Adelaide and to help cover the costs of residential college accommodation. Lucy has already had a taste of work in the dental field, having

in soccer. High Performance Sports Program head coach & Yr 8-12 sports coordinator Ciaran Buckley said a silver medal for the Under 17 girls at the national school’s basketball tournament during December was a highlight. Tenison Woods College students also representated South Australia in a variety of sporting State teams including netball, basketball, football, hockey, baseball, tetrathlon, swimming and cycling. “We are looking forward to another exciting year in 2019 for our student-athletes as our motto SHINE will continue to encourage all students to achieve success both academically and in the sporting arena,” Mr Buckley said. College principal David Mezinec said the Howard Mutton Perpetual Trophy was a huge feather in the aschool’s cap and to win this award on six occasions worked at a local dental practice during her gap years and travelling to East Timor for a dental volunteer trip, where she helped treat adults and children and set up a fully equipped dental clinic. Lucy has big plans to return to East Timor in the future to continue helping the local Timorese community and mentoring the dental staff. She also has a desire to return to the region in the capacity of a dentist. NEW FACES JOIN ACTIVE HEALTH PORTLAND TEAM Two new GP registrars have joined Active Health Portland, boosting the centre’s medical workforce. Dr Linda Anderson has been working as a doctor for two years at South West Healthcare in Warrnambool and Dr Tom Majer has worked as a doctor for three years in Port Fairy and Warrnambool. Active Health Portland GP Dr Marg Garde explained that all doctors go through a specialist training program. This includes GPs who become specialists over a four-year program, including an intern year, another year working in hospitals and then two years in GP in an apprentice-like model. “They are already fully qualified doctors, and like other specialists they go through an apprentice-style training model and then sit exams at the end of their training,” Dr Garde said. Active Health Portland also hosts medical students. Dr Anderson, who was the 100th graduate from the Deakin Medical School in Warrnambool, was a late comer to medicine. “It’s not my first career,” she said. “I came to medicine after working as a lab technician, teaching and serving about 25 years in the army in the education and nursing corps.” She is enjoying the change of direction. “It’s an amazing privilege when people handover their trust in their health and you never stop learning,” Dr Anderson said. Dr Majer, who previously completed a biomedical science degree, was inspired by his father to become a GP. “My father is a GP and I worked in his medical clinic as a receptionist and really liked what he was doing,” he said. “I like the flexibility of medicine and the lifestyle choices that come with being a GP. You can basically be a GP anywhere in the world; everywhere needs a GP.” Although he grew up in Melbourne, Dr Majer has enjoyed the move to rural Victoria. He did his post-grad medicine at Deakin, firstly at Waurn Ponds and later at Warrnambool. “Ï really liked Warrnambool and stayed for my internship and residency and did a GP placement with Port Fairy Medical Clinic and continue to work with that clinic as well as Active Health.” Both doctors will spend 12 months at Active Health

Portland. A third doctor has also been added to the Active Health Portland staff with Dr Samsun Nahar coming on board as a GP, moving to Portland with her husband Dr Abdul Mannan, who is with Portland District Health as a Hospital Medical Officer. Dr Nahar said the chance to work together had brought them to Portland from Queensland, where they had been working since 2013. “We like to work together, and when my husband got a job offer at Portland District Health and I got an offer at Active Health it was perfect because we could both work in the same place,” Dr Nahar said. Originally from Bangladesh, the couple moved to Australia in 2009 and after undertaking local study worked in Ayr near Townsville, Jandowae and Toowoomba. “We came for a better environment and for the future for our children and it has lived up to expectations,” she said. The move to Victoria brings them closer to friends from their native country. “I had a few friends originally from Bangladesh working in Victoria and they said it was a lovely place to live,” Dr Nahar said. “I googled Portland and it looked nice. I always had a dream to settle in Victoria to be closer to my close friends.” Dr Nahar covers the gamut of general practice but particularly loves working with children, women and the aged population through any chronic condition. “I love working with people and providing continuity of care. I love to give patients time; not run after the clock,” she said. The couple has two girls aged four and 14, one born in Bangladesh and the other in Australia and the family is fitting in nicely in Portland. “People are very welcoming,” Dr Nahar said. “This is a smaller town than Toowoomba and when it’s smaller people know each other better. I’m also very happy with the support at the practice.” To make an appointment at Active Health Portland medical clinic phone (03)5522 1200. Above - Dr Tom Majer & Dr Linda Anderson

MP CONFIDENT PATS FORUM WILL LEAD TO SYSTEM OVERHAUL Member ofr Mount Gambier Troy Bell said he’s confident a strong response to a public PATS forum in Mount Gambier last week will prompt other regional MPs to take action on the issue in their own electorate. The State Government’s Patient Assistance Transport Scheme (PATS) provides financial assistance to regional South Australians towards the cost of travel and accommodation when patients are required to travel to see medical specialists. More than 100 residents attended the Q&A style forum, to hear their questions answered by PATS manager Alexis Nicholson and chief finance officer Steve Brown. Issues raised included a patient’s right to choose their own specialist, why dental services are not recognised, the scheme’s ability to tie in with NDIS funding and why the scheme does not recognise Airbnb as accommodation providers. Mr Bell said the forum had given clarity to some attendees but had also identified several major issues around the scheme’s ability to reflect the individual circumstances of patients. “If I had to rate the PATS scheme, I’d probably give it a 5 out of 10 – there are major improvements to be made for it

to properly serve the needs of regional South Australians,” he said. “Certainly we’ve progressed since the Filby review in 2013 but there are important issues that have to be addressed with those who make the administrative decisions, like Minister for Health Stephen Wade, whose senior advisor was in attendance. I think there’s some additions the Minister needs to look at, such as the NDIS. If you’ve got a disability that is health related, you can use your NDIS package for mowing the lawns and support, why can’t you use it for travel and accommodation to see the specialist directly linked to your disability?” The scheme’s stagnating fuel subsidy came under question, with local resident Brenton Telford querying why the scheme’s 16c/km rate has not risen in line with the travel subsidies of other State Government schemes and agencies. Ms Nicholson said the fuel subsidy was currently under review. The PATS manager said there was an opportunity for a ‘rolling review’ of the scheme, rather than a full review which could take years to complete and action. In the last financial year, Ms Nicholson said 43,700 claims were processed involving 15,500 patients and around 70 per cent of the scheme’s lifestyle1.net | 30

claims came from the South East region, Mr Bell thanked those community members who aired personal stories. “There was over a 100 people here tonight and most of them have been into my office at some stage during the last few years, so I know their issues well. I’m really glad that people spoke out and raised their issue in a respectful and thoughtful way,” he said. Mr Bell said he would be opening up a continuing dialogue with Minister Wade and also encouraged other regional MPs to take up the issue.

“What I’d like to see is every country MP run a PATS forum in their electorate,” Mr Bell said. “These issues are not unique to Mount Gambier and I want to see these forums held across the State. As a collective of regional MPs we can really fight for our communities and ensure our people are getting the best deal they possibly can. No one is using PATS to make money,” he said. “They’re using it because they are seriously ill and they need to see health specialists outside their region.”

SHEDS AND TRAILERS

Federals put themselves back into premiership contention with a tight ten inning six run to four win over South Indians in the early game of Division One baseball. Federal scored first in the top of the third dig when Tom Rundle got on board after an error at first base and scored on a wild throw from second base in an attempted double play at the plate. South retaliated with three of their own. Dean Lane picked a walk, Ryan Placucci continued his good form with the bat hitting a two bagger to left-field. Both he and Lane scored on Bruce Morale’s double to left field. Ben Nash in the mean time was on base after a fielder’s choice and scored on Nathan Roach’s hit into an infield out. The Demons added one more in the fourth. Nathan Taylor found himself on base after a fielder’s choice and scored on Clay Carpenters hit to an error at right field. They then tied the game up in the fifth scoring another run. Gavin Smith singled to left field and crossed home plate on Wade Chant’s safehit to third base. Going ahead by one run in the top of the sixth, Carpenter hit safely to left field and scored on Gavin Smith’s second consecutive safehit, this time a two bagger, to centre-field. The Indians tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh when Dean Hamilton doubled to right field and was batted in by Steve Isaccson’s single to centre field. Inning eight and nine went by without any change to the score. In the top of the tenth, Chant found himself safe at first base after a wild throw from third base and crossed home on Sam Shepherd huge triple to right field. Shepherd scored on Carpenter’s hit into an infield out. South had no answers in the even inning leaving Federal triumphant six runs to four. Federal had nine safehits, one base on ball, seven strikeouts and made three errors. South had ten safehits, five base on ball, eleven strikeouts and made six errors. In the late game, Tigers scored an easy eight nil win over Central leaving Central a lot of work to do to stay in the finals race. TRAINING

The Limestone Coast has put in a strong showing at the recent South Australian Track & Field Championships with a significant medal haul and a number of athletes now headed to Sydney next month for the national titles. Seventeen year old Kaylee Whitehead not only secured gold in her long time pet events, the long jump and triple jump but also headed the field in the 400m – her first time competing at a serious athletics meet in the event. The run took a toll on her body as she pushed herself to the limit, but after recovering from the post race nausea and fatigue, Kaylee looks set to add the event to her program and focus her preparation on the sprint event. Kaylee was one of three athletes from the Sally Taylor stable to bring home gold, with a fourth, Tori Redemski, suffering an injury and unable to compete. Hayden Crowe, 14, made a clean sweep of his two events, bringing home gold in the 100m and 200m, while Guillaume Ros-Smith, also 14, came third in the 200m and took the gold in the long jump. He also competed in the 100m but unfortunately was disqualified in the final after a false start. Strong results also from other Limestone Coast based athletes with Amechai Bawden, who is also in the throes of preparing to attend the Special Olympics, in March, in Abu Dhabi, coming home with five medals – gold in the 800m and 1500m and silver in the 100m, 200m and 400m. Leila Croker has also been burning up the track and she had a huge state championship program. Competing in seven events, Leila had an outstanding meet, winning gold in the Under 14 long jump and triple jump, as well as the 100m and 200m. Leila not only ran a national qualifying time in the two sprint events but also ran personal best times, as she did in her solver medal winning effort in the 200m, also finishing second in the 80m hurdles and high jump. And that state track & field title effort came on the back of what has already been a big 2019 for Leila. In January she won the Athletics SA State MultiEvent Championship and took out the same event, which is basically the pentathlon, at the recent Little Athletics State Championships. Brother and sister duo, Hannah and Hunter Elliott also made their mark at the South Australian Track & Field Championships. Hannah is a St Martins Lutheran College student, while Hunter now attends school at Adelaide’s Rostrevor College. Both achieved gold in their steeplechase events, with Hannah smashing seven seconds off her personal best time, after overcoming a toe injury that stymied her preparations, lifestyle1.net | 33

LOCAL SPORT NEW LOOK PIONEERS READY FOR TIP OFF

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY 26-year-old infielder Manny Machado has agreed to the richest free agent contract in American sports history, a 10-year Major League Baseball deal worth $AUD420 million with the San Diego Padres.

PLAYER WELFARE IN THE SPOTLIGHT The AFL’s push for player safety at all costs apparently doesn’t apply when their own events are on. It’s been reported that the AFL refused injured West Coast Eagles defender Jeremy McGovern’s request to skip the grand final parade last year to get further treatment in his bid to play the next day. McGovern was nursing heavy bleeding near some vital organs in the lead-up to the grand final against Collingwood but went on to play a star role in the five-point grand final win, with his late mark in defence helping set up Dom Sheed’s match winner.

GOING OUT WITH A BANG It will come as no surpirse to cricket fans that when the West Indies broke an ODI record last week for sixes hit in an innings that maverick Chris Gayle was front and centre. Taking on England in the first match of their ODI series. The West Indies cleared the boundary a record 23 times, with Gayle contributing 12 of those in his 135. It was Gayle’s 24th ODI century and also saw him become the first player to hit 100 sixes, across all formats of the game, against one opponent. Gayle has now hit the most sixes in international competition of any player. Given the flamboyant batsman has announced he will retire from the 50 over format after this year’s World Cup, it appears he is determined to go out with a bang.

The challenges faced by the Pioneers Basketball Club in the past nine months have been well documented but all that will count for nothing when the Premiers League season tips off this Saturday night at Hillcrest Stadium in Adelaide. The Pioneers are taking on North Adelaide in their season opener – the club Pioneers championship player Erik Burdon called home for the majority of his career – before taking on Sturt on Sunday afternoon – the club where Pioneers skipper Tom Daly made his name. The dismantling of the SEABL competition, the lengthy time the club was in limbo with no competition to call home and the stringent conditions placed on the club’s entry into South Australia’s Premier League have made this coach Richard Hill’s toughest off and pre-season ever but in his own words – “we are better placed than we were last week and the week before that and the week before that” – things are looking up and the playing group is set to hit the pine and let their basketball do the talking. “It has been an absolute whirlwind and we have packed a lot into a short time,” Hill said. “There hasn’t been much team preparation but a lot of individual work. We’re probably lucky that the systems we are using are what we have been using for eight years so the young guys that have been around the group have been training that for some time. It is also the system we have been teaching at Tenison. At this stage, there’s no point in bringing in anything new until we have everyone here.” The now traditional Millicent Pre-Season Tournament was a godsend for the coach and his playing group, given Daly and Burdon have not played any serious basketball since their SEABL season ended last July, and import DayJar Dickson played his last serious match in March of the same year. “They definitely needed some game time,” Hill said. “Before the (Millicent) weekend we had only done about 10 minutes of five on five at training as well, which is not what you want. The younger guys are fine as they have been doing Lakers and local stuff.” The weekend also gave them a look at a couple of Premier League rivals and while none of the three sides set to compete in the SA competition were at full strength, it was still a good guide and gave the coach reason for optimism. As did the decision, only last week, of Brad Rathjen and Lachlan Hunter, who have both opted to become part of the Premier League campaign. The inclusion of the supremely talented local duo, who have worked with Hill extensively in the past and been part of the Pioneers development program, has somewhat offset the continued uncertainty surrounding the availability of import Kentrell Barkley, who despite being one of the first signings back in January, is still awaiting visa approval, with the official line being a backlog of applications. “All of a sudden we are two players better off,” Hill said. “They are both locals and both good kids and guys I’ve been involved with for quite a while.” Rathjen has had a couple of years away from the sport, where he was one of the nation’s top juniors, and the couple of seasons of football with East Gambier appear to have rejuvenated the rising star, reignited his passion for the sport and he has certainly lost none of his prowess. “He (Rathjen) hasn’t lost anything as a player,” Hill said. “I am excited to see how he develops over this season.” The signing of Lachlan Hunter was also a last minute coup for the club, with the former college player and long time Pioneers squad member set to play for an Adelaide

based club due to his study commitments in the State capital. “It was not easy for him to do but for him to make that commitment to us rather than play in Adelaide, which would have been easier, is fantastic,” Hill said. Add to that mix, a vastly improved Brayden Ousey, who showed off what a year in college has done for his game at the Millicent weekend, Matt Black, who also showed he can match it at the Premier League level with a strong pre-season showing, Malok Makoi and Mitch Hunter, who also look set to make their mark, and the young talent that will be fostered in 2019 has what it takes. “Brayden has improved out of sight,” Hill said. “And that is all credit to him. He went away, he has worked on his game.” With Barkley still on the wrong side of the world and Sam Daly still involved in the Sydney Kings NBL championship campaign, two of the starting five will not be part of this opening weekend. Dellon Brown is also another more experienced campaigner, who is still sidelined courtesy of knee surgery. Kyle Tipene, who is headed north for his domestic season campaign, is available for the opening rounds and will add some experience to the line-up. “It is not ideal or what we would usually do but we can’t afford not to take the opportunity of him being involved,” Hill said. Missing personnel aside, the biggest challenge for the playing group is the fact this weekend road double header will make it seven games in the past 15 days, including the Millicent tournament and a couple of pre-season hit outs last weekend in Adelaide, which is far from ideal. But without a minute of the season having been played, the coach’s prognosis for the club’s debut Premier League season is positive. “It we stay healthy I think we can be pretty good,” Hill said. LOCAL TALENT CONTINUES TO SHINE Lifestyle1 takes a look at two more of the Limestone Coast basketballers set to head to Townsville to represent SA Country at the Under 18 National Basketball Championship.

OSCAR CLARK Sixteen year old Oscar Clark has been playing basketball for nine years, learning his trade at the Naracoorte Basketball Stadium as he worked his way from local junior competition to representing Naracoorte at regional events, to becoming a fixture in the SA Country pathway. Now a student at Adelaide’s Prince Alfred College, it was his Naracoorte mentors that really set Oscar on the path for higher honours. “ I have been lucky enough to have a large amount of impactful coaches while playing basketball by first being exposed to great coaches in Naracoorte, including Noel Black and Glenn Mathieson,” Oscar said. That solid grounding saw Oscar start to represent SA Country from Under 13 level and he has been representing his State ever since. “Playing SA Country has helped my basketball by playing against other high level competitors to refine my skills, but it has also taught me how to always compete and get the best out of myself,” Oscar said. “SA country have a great set of coaches that have helped me along the way. Now that I have gone away boarding at Prince Alfred College this has also led to more exposure to great coaches within Forestville and also the great coaching program at the school, and all of that is helping me find ways I can be better.” Oscar’s focus is entirely on preparing for the national championships in April and then he will set his sights on new goals. “After nationals I will continue to play basketball in Adelaide, for both club and school, and try and play at the highest level possible,” he said. Like many young basketballers, he spends a lot of time watching the elite level, whether it be NBL or NBA. “I do have favourite players but I don’t think I model my game after anyone,” Oscar said. “I like to pick and choose what I like about certain players and try to incorporate that into my game to make myself the best overall player I can.”

LOCAL TALENT CONTINUES TO SHINE Lifestyle1 takes a look at two more of the Limestone Coast basketballers set to head to Townsville to represent SA Country at the Under 18 National Basketball Championship.

JACOB GROSSER Bordertown was the training ground for SA Country Under 18 representative Jacob Grosser, starting at Under 12 level before fast tracking through regional representation and the SA Country pathway. “I first got involved by watching my sister play and I followed along,” Jacob said. Now 16, and attending school in Adelaide at Immanuel College, Jacob has been representing SA Country since Under 14 level and credits both Naracoorte’s Glenn Mathieson and the Yorke Peninsula’s Ben Wigzel with significantly impacting on his young career. “I have learnt a lot of different basketball skills by training at the next level,” Jacob said. “I have also learnt about the importance of communication and being a good team player.” And he has also started to realise the importance of hard work. “I wouldn’t say I model my game around anyone in particular but I do like how Mitch Creek has found success by working hard,” he said. All Jacob’s attention is on preparing for the April nationals and after that he will look to continue to develop and improve his game and see where it leads.

GETTING THE JOB DONE AGAINST ALL ODDS “First game adrenalin can either work against you or for you and it definitely worked for us.” That was the assessment of rookie Premier League coach Matt Sutton after the newly reinvented Pioneers women ‘s team took to the court for this first time on Saturday night and came away with a 30 point victory, 83-53, over Eastern Mavericks. “They were awesome,” Sutton said. “I didn’t think that would happen but they just scrapped for everything.” Given the whirlwind preparation to put together a women’s roster, the signs after the weekend’s pre-season match series against the Mavericks, as well as what’s happening on the training court, has more cause for optimism, although the opening round this weekend sees the Pioneers taking on reigning titleholders North Adelaide on their home court, so the challenges are certainly in front of the inexperienced women’s team. The hunt for a second American import, to join newly appointed captain Amanda Frost, continues, but the inclusion of assistant coach Melissa Russell on the playing roster has been a huge coup for Sutton’s team. The former Premier League and WNBL player on court, in itself, is a reason to expect more of the 2019 Premier League campaign and in the weekend matches, her presence on court, her leadership and determination was evident and will certainly be critical in building this new team. “Her presence was so important,” Sutton said. “She is the most determined person on court.” It will be Russell and Frost that take charge of this young line-up on court, and Sutton cannot speak highly enough of the American import. “She is just awesome at both ends of the court,” Sutton said. “She is so positive and she just loves basketball.” Emily Winter, fresh from her stunning CBL season for South West champions Millicent, and Maddy and Olivia Wormald, who have experience in the Adelaide competition, will also be key to the Pioneers’ fortunes, while a raft of young local talent showed plenty at the weekend and will only grow from being a part of this program. “We’ve definitely got an enthusiastic group and a group

that is willing to play together,” Sutton said. “They have definitely taken everything we have done on board and they know we can’t do anything on our own and that we have to work together. They are willing to put their body on the line, whether it’s diving on a loose ball or contesting a rebound and it was very impressive to watch.” Claire Hunter, Sarah Nulty, Emily Dawe, Mikaela Horrigan and Sam Crute are the rising talents that are working hard on the training court and will provide back up to the more experienced players in the group. “They will keep taking baby steps and I think we will see more and more from them as the season progresses,” Sutton said. The Pioneers take on North Adelaide this Saturday night and then Sturt on Sunday afternoon in their opening round road double. Melissa Russell

TABLE TALK - 8BALL REPORT Summer Series Mixed 8 Ball - Finals Series Division 1 In the Division 1 preliminary final of Summer Series Mixed 8 Ball at the German Club last Tuesday night, Outlaws really came out with all guns blazing and were looking the goods with the score 5-1 their way at the end of round 1. By completion of round 2 and the scotchdoubles, their opposition, and early premiership favourites),Family Jewels were fairing slightly better at 6 frames to 3 down. After 14 frames the Schembri/Gordon/Larkin clan had somehow clawed their way back to still be in the match with the scores all tied up at 7-all but the party was all over when Millicent’s Sarah Ross stepped up to make it two from two from her for the night and also seal the victory. The much improved and very impressive Outlaws now look to the grand final this week, where they are facing last year’s premiers Shepherds, who will go into the match hungry for another win while knowing their opponents can not be underestimated. Division 2 The surprise winner of the Division 2 preliminary final was TNT, who seem to have saved their

best pool for the pointy end of the season. After getting off to a good start, TNT were 4-2 up at the end of the 1st round of singles, and continued their run of form to be 6-3 after the doubles. Jackpots did well to bounce back and win four of the next five to make things very interesting at seven frames apiece only to have the underdogs, TNT, claim victory in a match that came down to both players on the black ball in the final frame of the night. TNT, who have come from nowhere, after sitting at the bottom of the ladder for at least two thirds of the season, will front up against 2017/18 champs The Good Guys, in the grand final this week to see if their winning streak and good form can continue. behind win wasn’t easy with Webster Pack up 8 frames to 7 late in the match and The Ozzies Mick Hutchinson having to play some great pool to claim the final three frames and seal the victory. Pot Luck obviously didn’t have too much of that at all when they were easily taken care of by AlChase’n’Dick by 16 frames to 2. Heywood’s The Far Cues reversed their scoreline from the previous round to manage a good, solid 14 - 4 win over fellow Vic’s R. I. M.. Portland outfit Str8 Shooters led by Krystal Watts had another good win when they comfortably defeated Kym Lavia’s The Pot Erz 12 frames to 6 and retain second position on the ladder. SOUTH EAST VETERANS GOLF Fifty-two veteran players went to Port MacDonnell on their latest outing, and there were some good scores recorded in the breeze. Steve Von Duve, the 4 iron specialist, took out First Division, with 39 points, from Shane Will, 38, and Gordon Fleming, 37. Both these Robe players are used to a gentle zephyr, so this wasn’t at all unexpected. In Second Division, the ever wily Lyndsay Copeman recorded 41 points to win, from Colin Rex and Lance Counsel, on 39. Three Dartmoor players came to avail themselves of the Port Mac lunch and afternoon tea, a widely known feature of this annual visit. The Ross Orchard trophy went to Wayne “Wombat” Peters and Herman Van Der Heul, and the ball rundown was to 33 or more. The next meeting is at Blue Lake Golf Club on March 4.

MOTOR BARRY MANEY GROUP SCOOPS THE POOL BMG Kenworth DAF Mount Gambier has been awarded the 2018 DAF Dealer of the Year award, presented at PACCAR’s annual dealer event, held recently in Queenstown New Zealand. Andrew Hadjikakou, Managing Director PACCAR Australia, presented the Dealer of the Year trophy to BMG Kenworth DAF Mt Gambier Dealer Principal Jim Cornolo congratulating the dealership for winning the hotly contested DAF prize and crediting them for their benchmark performance. Based on the dealer’s performance across all areas of their DAF business, the DAF Dealer of the Year award acknowledges excellence in customer support in a high performing business. This is the second time the Barry Maney Group has been honoured with this important industry award, having also taken home the accolade in 2014. The Barry Maney Group has been in operation for more than 40 years and has transformed into a company dedicated to customer excellence, employing more than 100 staff across its various franchises. The Barry Maney Group headquarters are located at 199 Jubilee Highway West, Mount Gambier, while the dealership operates several service and parts outlets via authorised partner companies, maintaining excellent support coverage for DAF customers. Mr Hadjikakou said key factors in the success of the Barry Maney Group had been its ability to be a consistent high performer over a long period and sustain a culture that focuses on delivering quality customer service. “BMG Kenworth DAF Mt Gambier is an excellent example of a DAF dealer,” Mr Hadjikakou said. “Constantly exceeding their customers’ expectations, they strive to deliver the highest level of support across all areas of their business. They are a first class dealership and one that continuously invests in staff, equipment and facilities.” Accepting on behalf of the Barry Maney Group, Mr Cornolo said the award was a group effort and the team had worked hard throughout the year to achieve the DAF Dealer of the Year title.

“A lot of work goes into what we do and the staff has been exceptional, whether it’s trucks, parts or service, I can’t speak highly enough of all the people in the business,” he said. “Everyone does a terrific job – we’ve really focused on our customers and supporting them in every way possible. The DAF range is engineered to the highest standards and is well suited to a variety of applications, from innercity delivery to regional and national delivery.

“Supported by a team of professionals we are able to offer DAF customers a full lifetime ownership experience with modern equipment and facilities. We are also supported by exceptional customers. There are often challenges, which we meet head-on and the customers continue to support us.” The Barry Maney Group was also presented at the event with the 2018 PACCAR Financial Dealer of the Year award and was ranked third in the race for the Kenworth Dealer of the Year.
