COVER • IT’S ALL ABOUT FAMILY AT NALOU KITCHEN When the doors to Nalou Kitchen opened on October 10 last year, it was the realisation of a dream for three sisters. “We always said we would move back to Mount Gambier and open our own café,” Ashlee Brion said. “We wanted a place that was family friendly and provided healthy options as well as the chance to be indulgent.” It sees an all-encompassing menu that sees breakfast on offer all day, lunch options and a dinner menu for Friday and Saturday nights. From shared options including nachos or a grazing plate, to delicious pizzas, gourmet burgers and salads, the lunch menu also offers sandwiches, focaccias and a tortilla wrap for those on the go.

Breakfast ranges from waffles to breakfast bowls, to building your own hearty cooked breakfast from a range of ingredients and menu options. There is also a specialised kids menu. The girls also knew how important it was to get the coffee right and they couldn’t be happier with their speciality supplier, White Whale Coffee Roasters. The manual coffee machine at Nalou Kitchen ensures their baristas create each coffee to taste. For the first three months, it has been Ashlee and her sister Jenna Johns at the coalface of establishing their

dream, with the third sister, Samantha Thomas set to join the team in the coming weeks. “We couldn’t do this without the support of our husbands,” Ashlee said. The girls were born in Mount Gambier and then moved to Adelaide in 2000 and growing up with a chef for a father, ending up in hospitality always seemed on the cards. “We were always cooking at home,” Ashlee said. Jenna is certainly the one who seemed to get the cooking gene – she is a qualified chef and a patisserie chef – and everything served at Nalou Kitchen is housemade. “ We wanted it to be a place where people could order freshly made food with everything created from scratch,” Jenna said. “And we also wanted to be flexible and to be able to tailor our menu items to suit people’s needs.” Nalou Kitchen will soon be open seven days a week. It currently opens Tuesday to Thursday from 8am to 4pm; Friday from 8am-4pm, before

reopening for the dinner shift from 6-9pm, while Saturday is an 8.30am4pm day shift, with the 6-9pm dinner sitting. Nalou Kitchen is open 8.30am1pm on Sunday. But the girls realise the need to be flexible and are always happy to discuss an early breakfast meeting or a weeknight dinner for small groups, as well as offering catering, on and off site, and functions. Local produce dominates the Nalou Kitchen menu and the drinks menu also showcases local wines, ciders and beers. For anyone who hasn’t tried Nalou Kitchen, mention this Lifestyle1 cover and you will receive a $3 coffee, dine in or take away (medium) until February 13. REDEFINING OUR NINE TO FIVE Last week, Charlie, Kadie and Teagan Attiwill did what most children in this region did – they returned to the classroom for another year. But for the primary school trio it was a definite change of pace after they spent the 2018 school year in South America, speaking more Spanish than English, and living without most of the luxuries of life in Australia. The family’s facebook page was entitled Redefining Our Nine to Five as the girls and their parents Tash and Richie went on the adventure of a lifetime. So Tash battled the unreliable wi-fi to continue her work as a personal development coach and property investment adviser, Richie volunteered at a local gym, but arguably spent more time surfing than working, and the girls immersed themselves in a life they had never experienced before in their short lives. South America became the destination of choice, because, although you could argue, in spite of, Tash’s experience in Jamaica as a 16 year old exchange student. “I was basically in a place where they had not really seen a white person before,” Tash said. “I was in a town of about 4000 people but meeting different people and experiencing a different culture was life changing.” Much of Tash’s experience was laced with fear, living amongst significant crime, but she also was fascinated by her first real experience of people that do not have anywhere

near what we have and it shaped her philosophy on life and, in turn, her parenting style. “I couldn’t believe how blessed we were and how little other people have,” she said. “I had trouble fitting back in to my life when I returned, especially the materialistic side of things and because of that I always wanted my kids, from a young age, to be grateful and to want to give back.” That saw the family initially spend a month in Cambodia in 2017, handing over $500 which the girls had raised making and seeling cards, and meeting their sponsor child. That was basically putting the toes in the water and then wanting the girls to continue to learn about life without luxury, combined with the desire for

them to learn Spanish, one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, a long stint somewhere in South America loomed as the next family adventure. Research saw the family land on Costa Rica – widely considered one of the safest destinations and with some good opportunities for the girls in school. In reality, it was also a perfect location for Tash and Richie – Tash spending her mornings of yoga and meditation on the beach, and Richie heading out to surf at every opportunity. The routine of Costa Rica was simple – as an adventure labelled Redefining Our Nine to Five should be – Tash and Richie worked while the girls were at school and then afternoons were spent at the beach.

TEST

“The girls would often meet school friends down the beach and that is where we spent every afternoon,” Tash said. It was a matter of making the most of the daylight – it was basically dark by 6pm – so the evenings were spent working on their Spanish. It probably won’t come as a surprise to know the girls have returned home with pretty impressive conversational Spanish, while Tash still feels like she has some work to do. “When we were out and about, like in the hardware store or the supermarket, I would actually often get the girls to do the talking,” Tash said. The other wonderful side effect of their life on Costa Rica was they had to travel. “You are only allowed to stay there for three months at a time so

we had to travel and we certainly took advantage of that,” Tash said. That saw time spent Colombia and Nicaragua, although the latter was far too dangerous for a long stay. “Nicaragua is too dangerous but it is such a beautiful country,” Tash said. Of course there was plenty of travel within Costa Rica as well. “It was only eight hours to drive from the top to the bottom of the country, so every weekend we could go somewhere,” Tash said. “We would find new waterfalls – everywhere was amazing.” School was also a completely different experience with Charlie and Kadie at an international school and Teagan opting for being home schooled by a French woman, who has 10 students. That school also focussed on local cuisine and every Friday, cooking was, literally, on the menu. It brought the families together and it was always a great night. “It was really awesome,” Tash said. It is safe to say schooling was challenging through, with the girls trying to learn subjects such as maths and science in Spanish. “There was a lot of translating that had to be done before the girls could even do the work,” Tash said. Given the healthy lifestyle the Attiwills pride themselves on, Tash certainly does not sugar coat the Costa Rica experience. “For the girls, it definitely went from we don’t want to be here to when can we go again,” Tash said. And while Costa Rica ticked the box in terms of teaching the girls Spanish and also teaching about living with minimum possessions, Costa Rica is also a world leader in environmental sustainability and that also tapped into lessons Richie and Tash wanted for their girls. An outdoor family at heart, the hiking and surfing opportunities in Costa Rica was a huge attraction. “We want our girls to look forward to every day, to be mindful, for every day to be an adventure,” Tash said. cont. page 29

A FLYING START TO 2019

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Gin & tonic slice 250g plain sweet biscuits 100g butter, melted, cooled FILLING 125g unsalted butter 215g (1 cup) caster sugar 1 tablespoon finely grated lemon rind 125ml (1/2 cup) lemon juice 2 eggs 4 egg yolks 1 tablespoon gelatine powder 180ml (3/4 cup) thickened cream JELLY

After significant time overseas in the past two years, Millicent based freestyle motocross champion Josh Burdon and his Factory FMX team had committed to working the Australian circuit and their first big gig of 2019 was the Port Lincoln Tunarama Festival over the Australia Day weekend. The team performed two 20 minute shows on Saturday and Sunday, with the festival

attracting more than 20,000 people. A cruise ship docking at the West Coast port added to those numbers on Sunday as the heat failed to deter the crowds. Just getting to Port Lincoln was challenging for the team as the soaring temperature made the going slow with a blown tyre on the truck also adding to the challenges. But the success of the shows made it all worthwhile as Sam Bennet wowed the crowd with his road bike stunts and Josh and Jett Anderson, worked the freestyle motocross routines. The first shows of 2019 will soon be available on Factory FMX’s Instagram courtesy of the work of Astyn Reid, from Kinship Productions, and Max Reeves, from Reeves Media Filming.

1 tablespoon gelatine powder 110g (1/2 cup) caster sugar 125ml (1/2 cup) strained lemon juice 250ml (1 cup) tonic water 125ml (1/2 cup) gin Fresh mint leaves, to serve (optional) Lime slices, to serve (optional) Edible flowers, to serve (optional)

Method Grease a 20 x 30cm slice pan and line with baking paper, allowing the 2 long sides to overhang. Break up the biscuits into a food processor and process until coarsely crushed. Pour in the butter and process until combined. Tip into the prepared pan and use the back of the spoon to press firmly and evenly into the base. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes or until firm. Meanwhile, for the filling, combine the butter, sugar, lemon zest, juice, eggs and yolks in a medium saucepan. Stir over very low heat for 2 minutes or until the butter has melted. Continue cooking, stirring constantly, for a further 10 minutes or until the mixture is thick. Strain into a large mixing bowl and set aside. Place 60ml (1/4 cup) water in a bowl and sprinkle over the gelatine powder. Set aside for a couple of minutes to soften. Microwave on HIGH for 30 seconds or until hot. Use a fork to stir to dissolve the gelatine. Set aside to cool until the gelatine and lemon mixtures are at the same temperature. Stir gelatine into the lemon mixture. Set aside at room temperature, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes or until cooled. Use electric beaters to beat the cream until soft peaks form. Fold into the lemon curd. Pour over the base and smooth the surface. Place in the fridge for 2 hours or until set. To make the jelly, place 125ml (1/2 cup) cold water in a small saucepan. Sprinkle the gelatine over and leave to soften. Heat over medium heat until just hot, stirring to dissolve the gelatine. Add the sugar and stir over the heat without boiling until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in the lemon juice, tonic water and gin. Strain into a jug and skim off any bubbles on the surface. Set aside to cool to room temperature. Leaving the slice in the fridge, gently pour the gin and tonic mixture over the slice. Sprinkle with herbs & flowers. Keep in the fridge for 4 hours or until set.

PHOTOGRAPHY IN FOCUS AS NARACOORTE ART GALLERY UNVEILS NEW EXHIBITIONS The Naracoorte Art Gallery is unveiling two amazing exhibitions to kickstart its 2019 program. In the Main Gallery will be acclaimed Robyn Stacey: Ray of Light exhibition, which was reently on show at Mount Gambier’s Riddoch Art Gallery, featuring artworks by the Sydney-based photographic artist. Created in 2006, she turned well known Adelaide sites into camera obscuras and to see a local take, head to the Bainger Gallery, where local photogrpahy club Captured Images is showing their interpretation of Camera Obscura and some of the equipment they used. Both exhibitions are now open and run until March 3.

AT A GLANCE LOCALS SHINE AT LEGO CONVENTION LEGO lovers from around Australia converged on Melbourne in January to exhibit their works at Australia’s premiere LEGO fan event, Brickvention. Three hundred of the best LEGO builders in Australia assembled to show 20,000 spectators what could be created with those familiar plastic bricks and a touch of creativity. Amongst those exhibiting at Brickvention 2019 were members of the Limestone Coast LEGO User Group (LCLUG). Whilst it was Mount Gambier residents Scott and Duke Bradley’s third year attending the convention, it was their

first exhibiting. Scott’s exhibit named Wall Hung involves LEGO Modular series buildings remodelled into IKEA Display Boxes and hung on a wall. “I had LEGO sets that I was never going to build because I didn’t have anywhere to display them, but building into these display boxes allows me to hang them on a wall,” he said. The Wall Hung exhibit was awarded the Judge’s Choice trophy, one of only 12 awards presented to exhibitors. This year also marked another local enthusiast’s third year exhibiting at Brickvention. Emma Robinson is well known for her sprawling urban layouts, including city buildings, busy streets, trains, a farm and even a motorised wind turbine. This year Emma, along with the assistance of another local enthusiast Alison Boomsma, created one of the biggest exhibits at the Brickvention event. “I love sharing my love of the brick with people both young and old,” Emma said. “To see a child walk up to your display with their mouth open in amazement makes all of the work creating the display worthwhile”. Emma is also the organiser of Mount Gambier’s own LEGO fan event, BrickGambier, which is held annually over the October long weekend at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds. Last year, the event attracted both local and Adelaide based exhibitors bringing delight to more than 1500 attendees. This year’s event is set to be bigger, with more LEGO enthusiasts from both Adelaide and interstate applying to

exhibit, with the local members also making some important connections at the national event, with new exhibitors committing to this year’s Mount Gambier event. For adults located in the Limestone Coast who share a love of LEGO, the Limestone Coast LEGO User Group meet on the third Sunday of every month in the Committee Room at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds. The group provides an opportunity to talk about build ideas, showcase recent creations and participate in fun building challenges. For more information find the LCLUG on Facebook or contact Emma Robinson on 0408 500 616.

COMMUNITY SERVICE IS ITS OWN REWARD Michael Bleby OAM has seen ac.care grow from employing a few staff in Mount Gambier to building a team of more than 250 delivering a broad range of vital services across regional South Australia. From foster care to homelessness programs and addressing many other areas of need, the Mount Gambier based organisation’s success story continues to grow as it helps people across the South East, Murraylands, Riverland, Fleurieu Peninsula and Adelaide Hills. Mr Bleby’s part in the growth of ac.care as board chairman for almost 25 years was recognised when he received an Order of Australia Medal in this year’s Australia Day honours. “It is an honour, but also very humbling to be included among the names of others who have received national recognition for their services,” Mr Bleby said. “I have lived and worked all my adult life in rural communities and you soon realise volunteering and community service is what makes our country communities function properly. “The slogan ‘live life for others’ has always attracted me over the years because of the opportunities and rewards it can deliver.” Last year ac.care found homes with local foster carers for 331 children across its service area, successfully used early intervention services to help 282 people avoid becoming homeless and helped move 906 people from homelessness into stable accommodation. But Mr Bleby said there was still much more the organisation could do as a “country specialist”. He was asked to step into the ac.care leadership role by Mount Gambier Anglican parish priest Brian Ashworth in the mid ‘90s after his extensive work in the forestry sector brought him to the region. Mr Bleby had been appointed to oversee the 10-year replanting of the Mount Burr forests following the devastating Ash Wednesday fires of 1983 after previously working in the Mid North, at Penola Forest and at Mount Crawford in the Adelaide Hills in the 1970s and early 1980s.

“We had forest fires everywhere and lost a quarter of the forestry estate in an afternoon across the broader region,” Mr Bleby said. Taking up residence in Millicent, Mr Bleby continued to be involved in the Anglican church, also contributing to the South East Natural Resources Management Board, Millicent Choral Society and Lions, among other organisations, and serving as a Justice of the Peace, in addition to his ongoing role with ac.care. “I have been fortunate and privileged to serve where I can – it’s been enjoyable and challenging,” he said. Mr Bleby worked with ac.care founding chief executive Rob Foggo in Mount Gambier and helped guide growth of the organisation as it expanded into other regions, initially with foster care and then other services. “The organisation strives to provide country people with a safe home, enough money to live on and strong positive relationships,” Mr Bleby said. He has continued in the role with the appointment of current chief executive Shane Maddocks in 2017. Mr Bleby said there were always challenges to meet people’s needs, but ac.care’s community, agency and government partnerships continued to deliver results. The business community has also traditionally supported ac.care, particularly with the Support Homeless

People Luncheon, which raised $125,000 at The Barn Palais last year. “Support from the business community of Mount Gambier and seeing how people respond to the need with the charity lunch has been amazing,” Mr Bleby said. “The reason that works is people understand the money raised is used locally, it won’t disappear to somewhere else, but will help the homeless and needs we have in our region and country people will always support that notion because we are into self-help.” ac.care chief executive officer Shane Maddocks congratulated Mr Bleby on the Australia Day honour and praised his long-standing and deep commitment to building resilience among country communities and opportunities for all. “As board convenor, he has been a great supporter of the work of ac.care to reduce homelessness, poverty and isolation and support families and children to be strong and safe,” Mr Maddocks said. “His extensive connections in the South East and involvement in the work of ac.care, from foster care through to homelessness programs, has made him a passionate champion of country people not just close to home, but across the state.”| Above - Michael Bleby OAM outside the Millicent ac.care office.

WELL TRAVELLED ARTIST UNVEILS NEW EXHIBITION Gallery 54 Collective in Penola is pleased to present a retrospective exhibition by member Jean McArthur (pictured). The exhibition, Leave No Stone Unturned, is a collection of works past and present that represents a journey through Jean’s life of creativity and travel. An intrepid traveller, Jean grew up in rural South Australia. Her curiosity has led her to explore books, odd corners of the world and the natural environment. “I like people, food, weather, solitude and can be contrary,” Jean said. The exhibition opens on Sunday, February 10, at 2pm, and will be introduced by guest speaker Monica Hart. Everyone is welcome to join Jean and other members of the Collective, at 54 Church Street, for the event. The exhibition runs until March 25. AT A GLANCE

REGIONAL LEADERS STEPPING UP THANKS TO NEW TRAINING PROGRAM The inaugural Limestone Coast leadership Program has kicked off with an induction at Struan House in a bid to help people upskill and develop in their own backyards. Limestone Coast Local Government Association program coordinator Ali Auld said. Providing the program locally made it more accessible. “The community capacity building program was designed to overcome barriers that similar citybased programs present in terms of costs for travel and accommodation, time away from work, and lack of regional context and networking opportunities,” Ms Auld said. “It aims to build leadership capacity and develop networks of skilled and motivated people who can support each other to take on roles and projects for the benefit of the regions community and economy.” Limestone Coast Local Government Association president Erika Vickery said initiating the program was in response to regional stakeholders who continue to identify leadership training for regional leaders as crucial. “There is great leadership potential in the Limestone Coast and this program intends to invest in the leadership skills of a more diverse cohort in our community,” Mayor Vickery said. “The LCLGA is very proud to be the host of the Limestone Coast Leadership Program.” The Limestone Coast Leadership Program is being delivered by The Leaders Institute of SA and has been supported by Key Partners: The Australian Government through the Building Better Regions Fund, Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast, Primary Industries and Region SA, Department of Industry and Skills. Additional scholarships have also been made available through the support of our regional business, industry and council leaders who recognise the value in a program such as this. They

have provided scholarships to ensure that financial barriers do not impact on emerging leaders being able to undertake the program. Program scholarship partners are L.V. Dohnt, Beach Energy, EML, South East Natural Resource Management Board, Disability Workforce Project, City of Mount Gambier and District Council of Grant and additionally, each of the seven Limestone Coast councils provide in-kind support to the program. The participants of the Limestone Coast Leadership Program will also work together on several community action projects that address real issues in the region. “Many rural, regional and remote communities struggle to develop and retain leadership capacity both in quantity of leaders and extent of their skills,” Ms Auld said. “Sustainable, ongoing leadership programs in other states, have been shown to produce wide ranging social benefits including active citizenship, increased capacity, shared purpose, and supporting participants to be catalysis for community action.” Applications for the 2020 Limestone Coast Leadership Program will open in July. Business, industry and community organisations are invited to partner in this community capacity building program through sponsorship or scholarships, with a prospectus available from Ali Auld at leadership@lclga.sa.gov.au For further information regarding the program head to www.lclga.sa.gov.au/limestonecoast-leadership-program

WALL TO WALL FUN AT CARA CAMP Two Boandik employees have recently completed their Bachelor in Dementia Care, heightening Boandik’s focus on being a leader in dementia care in the Limestone Coast. Theresa Connor and Merrilyn McGregor studied six years part time to gain the degree through the University of Tasmania and are believed to be two of only three three people in the Limestone Coast with these qualifications. The Dementia Care Program is Australia’s first degree specifically focused on dementia. With the rise in prevalence in dementia and the need to provide quality care in the community, health care centres and hospitals, and in residential care, it is becoming essential that health care workers in aged care develop specialised knowledge in this field so that you can make a difference to the

lives of people living with dementia. Now working in a full time role working as Boandik’s Dementia Specialist, Theresa Connor said she was looking forward to further developing Boandik’s philosophy and resources in this field. “With a diagnosis of dementia life does change, but it doesn’t mean you still can’t have a quality life,” Theresa said. “Boandik has specialised dementia resources and facilities to meet the needs of residents, and I aim to build upon relationships and services to create meaningful engagement, further mentoring Boandik Dementia champions on staff and provide greater support to families adjusting to dementia of a loved one.” Above - Merrilyn McGregor & Theresa Connor.

RIDDOCH ART GALLERY UNVEILS FIRST EXHIBITIONS OF 2019 The Riddoch Art Gallery will launch the first exhibitions for 2019 this Friday at 6pm. Both exhibitions will be on display until Sunday, March 10. Curated by Linda Marie Walker, the Riddoch Art Gallery will present a solo exhibition by Adelaide based artist Aldo Iacobelli, that will bring together work that spans his forty year career across both Australia and Europe. Titled Return, the exhibition encompasses Iacobelli’s phenomenal talent as a painter and draughtsman, alongside his impeccable skill in sculpture and installation. Presenting almost 30 works across the Main and Margaret Scott galleries, this exhibition features works not yet seen in Australia. “We are thrilled to present such an important body of work by one of South Australia’s most internationally experienced artists,” Riddoch Art Gallery Director Dr Melentie Pandilovski said. “His consummate skill across so many mediums makes his work such a delight and surprise, and hopefully our audiences will feel the same when they come to see it.” In the Cathleen Edkins Gallery, Thumbprint Workshop Incorporated are presenting Shorelines, an exhibition featuring interstate and Limestone Coast artists inspired by The Overwintering Project. Concerned with promoting the importance of shoreline ecosystems, the works will include prints, mixed media works on paper and installations. Thumbprint Workshop, a group of artists working primarily as printmakers and illustrators are based in Mount Gambier and have selected artists to respond to the importance of shoreline ecosystems and the flow on effect these areas have on endangered species. “Not only does this exhibition give us the opportunity to demonstrate the robust and talented community of printmakers in our region, it also sheds light on incredibly complex and fragile ecosystems that support unique wildlife which is an important message for us all,” Dr Pandilovski said. The Riddoch Art Gallery is located at 1 Bay Road, inside the Main Corner Complex and is open 10am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday.

HOOKED ON PORTLAND SERVES UP A FEAST OF FOOD & FUN FOR EVERYONE An estimated 10,000 food, fishing and music lovers flocked to Portland over the January long weekend to enjoy Hooked on Portland, one of the region’s fastest growing food, music and lifestyle festivals. Festival attendees delighted in the range of offerings which included family amusements, skateboarding, scooter and BMX competition, fishing competition, cooking demonstrations from River Cottage television chef Paul West and an evening of talented Australian entertainment, headlined by Triple J sensation ASTA. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the festival was a huge success, experiencing strong crowds across the weekend. “From Friday afternoon through to Sunday evening the town was absolutely buzzing, with the festival attracting attendees from nearby towns and around Victoria as well as international visitors with many choosing to spend the whole weekend in the region,” Cr Rank said. “It is safe to say that Hooked on Portland is officially on the map as a premier event in south west Victoria.” Television chef and sustainability advocate Paul West wooed crowds on Saturday from the food and fishing hub, sharing his culinary secrets to a packed room as part of the cooking demonstrations. Festival goers were also treated to roaming circus performances, market stalls and free fishing clinics with the Victorian Fisheries Authority. Cr Rank said the fishing competition also played a large role in the success of the

weekend, with a 68 per cent increase in registrations from last year. “This year we had more than 140 registered competitors vying for $3000 in cash prizes, which is a significant jump on last year’s registration numbers. The foreshore area and boat ramps were a hub of activity as keen anglers tried their luck both out on the water and on-shore,” she said. Reeling in the biggest catch for the day was Rialeigh Mathe with his 31.9kg tuna haul, however the competition saw entrants of all ages take home a win, including three year old Terry Gadsen from Portland who won the junior land based salmon catch category. Cr Rank said the live entertainment pulled in strong crowds to the Bentinck Street lawns on Saturday, with over eight hours of live music from leading Australian artists. “The entire festival congregated to the main stage with sensational sets from Josh Rawiri, The New Savages, Wallace, Benny Walker, 19-Twenty and of course, our headline act ASTA,” she said. “We were thrilled to welcome someone of such high calibre as ASTA to the main stage, she has performed with some of the biggest names in international

music such as Ellie Goulding and rapper All Day and now at Portland! Her contemporary pop sound and interactive stage presence was the perfect way to end the Saturday night festivities.” Hooked on Portland also showcased local talent across the weekend, with the youth zone featuring local DJ’s Shaun King, DJ Legion, Chegz and DJ Fairweather on Saturday and local musicians Gav Riddell, Jason Bull and Cover Story dominating the main stage on Sunday. “After a very successful weekend in Portland we are excited to say Hooked on Portland will be back bigger and better next year.” Above (left) - Mayor Cr Anita Rank and Paul West prepare some oat and strawberry parfaits as part of the cooking demonstrations on Saturday afternoon. The verdict is in. The Mount Gambier Library Summer Reading Club was a huge success. After promoting the initiative at local school assemblies in the lead up to the December 3 start date, the library was inundated with interest with almost 300 children registering. Ranging from birth to 18 years, the registered children logged their reading on a special bookmark and when their bookmark was full they brought it into the library as their ‘ticket’ into one of three major prize

draws. Children were then able to pick a lucky dip prize and get a new bookmark to start the process again. “The reading incentive program worked extremely well and saw an increase in children using the library space, programs, resources and collections,” Kelly Lynch said. “Children were so excited to come in and show their reading progress and look for the golden creature who was hidden in different location throughout the library. These incentives work to create the larger lifestyle1.net | 26

outcome of children forming a regular library habit from a young age.” Along with the Mount Gambier Library, local businesses including Green Triangle Electronics, Harvey Norman, Target, Kmart and Pet Stock, donated goods and vouchers. Children in the three separate age categories won prizes including Fisher-Price electronic writing equipment, a Wacom tablet, a Sphero robot, Rubik’s Cube, games, hardcover picture books and novels. The program culminated with a free party in the

Cave Gardens with more than 170 turning up to celebrate the success of the national literacy program with face painting, sack races, limbo and other fun activities. The girls keep a gratitude journal and while being grateful in Costa Rica was arguably easier, the girls continue to keep that journal. “One of the lessons we learnt while we were in Costa Rica was why do people create a life they need a holiday from?” Tash said. “Basically we found out what we could live without.” The family bought bikes when they arrived in Costa Rica and other than that, there was no other toys for the girls to enjoy. What was also interesting for the family was everyone they met had a different story to tell. “Everyone one in Costa Rica had a different reason for being there,” Tash said. “One couple from Canada had been there for 35 years.” After returning to Australia, Tash posted the inspirational quote “Fill your life with experiences not things. Have stories to tell not stuff to show.” That was the essence of the Attiwills’ 2018 and now unpacking boxes and boxes of belongings that had been placed in storage, after living life out of four backpacks for five people for the best part of a year, the challenge is now finding a new balance back home in Australia. “I now have this whole house of ‘stuff’ that we didn’t even miss when we were gone,” Tash posted. Safe to say, the quote and not the ‘stuff’ are set to dominate 2019. Given the friendships made, the family is set to return for a month some time this year. WHAT THE GIRLS SAID…. CHARLIE (10 YEARS OLD) • Highlight – The opportunity to learn Spanish. • What I miss – Speaking Spanish every day. • The Cambodia experience – “It was very emotional seeing how they lived, meeting our sponsor child and getting to go to her house and realising how lucky we are in Australia.” KADIE (9 YEARS OLD) • Highlight - The friends we made from all over the world and learning to surf. • What I miss - Being able to surf every day and my friends. It felt like home. • The Cambodia experience – “The temples were so amazing, I didn’t know anything like that existed. The food was so different and tasted so fresh, even the crickets we ate at the bat cave were great. I really loved dragonfruit.” TEAGAN (7 YEARS OLD) • Highlight - The amazing animals (like sloths and toucans) and getting to see monkeys, iguanas and squirrels every day. I loved getting dropped to school on the back of the push bike, except for in the wet season. • What I miss - Nearly every day brought new experiences and I miss the ice cream. • The Cambodia experience – “I was surprised at how the kids in Cambodia lived, but also surprised that they seemed so happy. It made me grateful to have my house in Australia. I loved the temples, we had so much fun exploring them. The whole experience was eye opening. It inspired me to use my art to make money to help others.”

Not only does South Australia lead the nation with the first ‘One Card Network’ which connects library members with all public libraries across the state, we now have the Libraries SA application. The community is invited to attend the official launch of the app at the Mount Gambier Library next Thursday at 3.30pm. Free to download, the new app for smart phones and tablets allows South Australian library customers to access services wherever they are. "This app literally puts the Mount Gambier Library in your pocket," library manager Georgina Davison said. “You can search the catalogue, make a library room booking, discover all of our events and one of the major functions is that you can scan an item when you are out and about see if we have it in our library. So if you are at a friend’s place and they have a DVD recommendation, or if you see a new release book you can scan the barcode and the app tells you if we have it and you can place a hold immediately.” Free in the App Store or Google Play, search for ‘Libraries SA’. You can remove the hassle of having your library card on you at all times with the app allowing borrowing at the Self Loans Stations. “We will have cake for the official launch and we ask for everyone to bring along their mobile device; phone or tablet and download the app with us. Everyone who downloads the app will go into the draw to win a Samsung Galaxy tablet,” Mrs Davison (pictured) said. lifestyle1.net | 29

LOCAL SPORT GRABBING THEIR CHANCE WITH BOTH HANDS Mount Gambier has strong representation at the upcoming Under 18 National Championships in Townsville. Running from April 13-20, Mount Gambier dominates the Under 18 women’s SA Country team with Claire Hunter, Keryl Ousey and Mikaela Horrigan all earning the call-up, with former Lakers player Emily Close, who has moved to Adelaide for school in 2019, also part of the line-up. Rising talents Sarah Nulty and Emily Dawe are named as reserves. Sarah and Emily certainly have a great opportunity to develop their skills, with the duo being named, along with Claire, Keryl and Mikaela as development players for the Mount Gambier Pioneers women’s program. In the men’s line-up, Mount Gambier has Oli Thomson, who is training as a development player with the Pioneers, as its sole representative in the SA Country line-up, with Jaidyn Lawrence and Harry McInnes named as reserves, along with Naracoorte’s Zacary Walker. Bordertown players Oscar Clark and Jacob Grosser are also part of the Under 18 line-up. Lifestyle1 is talking to this bevy of basketball talent over the next few issues with Keryl, Claire, Mikaela and Emily Dawe in the spotlight this issue.

KERYL OUSEY Keryl is not only a talented basketballer, she is also a strong netballers and has also been part of the SASI Talent Search Rowing Program but with the Under 18 nationals on the horizon and the newfound opportunity to train with the Pioneers resurrected women’s program means basketball is well and truly number one. “I see the Pioneers as a huge opportunity, which it is, that I needed to grab with both hands,” Keryl said. “I am a very sports-focused person in both netball and basketball, but with my family, friends and the basketball association backing me up, I made the decision to dive into this experience.”Keryl started her basketball career while living in Colac and has been playing for eight years and has been regular member of Lakers teams since returning to Mount Gambier and has become entrenched in the SA Country system for the past three years. This is her second successive year earning the call up to the Under 18 SA Country team for national championships. The Pioneers opportunity certainly looms as an exciting chance for Keryl to rally step

up her game. “I definitely look forward to seeing myself improve over the course of the season,” Keryl said. “Playing in such a high quality league will hopefully allow me to expand my basketball skills and knowledge so that I can become a better player.” Keryl has played her share of both netball and basketball alongside assistant coach Melissa Russell and can’t wait to tap into even more of Russell’s expertise. “Mel is an incredible player in both netball and basketball and I have been lucky enough to have spent a lot of time with her in both areas,” Keryl said. For sure, I definitely look forward to working with her so that I can further develop from her knowledge and talent. I also believe Matt and Bryan will be playing a crucial part in my development in the upcoming season as the are both incredible smart and knowledgeable people with a lot of experience with high level competitive basketball. Bryan’s support over the past number of years has had a huge impact on my basketball and playing career, he has, and does, coach me in more than one local team along with Lakers and has taught me so much.”

MIKAELA HORRIGAN Mikaela has been playing basketball for eight years and for the past five she has regularly been part of SA Country line-ups and is thrilled to have forced her way into the national championships line-up for SA Country this year. The invitation to be part of the Pioneers program is also a huge opportunity for the rising talent. “I love basketball so much, and I was so proud to be given the chance to represent Mount Gambier,” Mikaela said. “I am hoping to improve my game. I am so lucky to have a great chance to learn so much from Matt Sutton, and Bryan Green has been so good with my development and I owe him so much.” Mikaela has already had the fortune of playing under Melissa Russell as a coach and also an A Grade team mate, in the local competition, and to be able to work more intensively alongside the former WNBL payer in the elite Pioneers program has Mikaela excited about what she will be able to learn. “I already

owe a lot of what I have learnt to Melissa, she is amazing,” Mikaela said. “I’m hoping to improve my confidence & accuracy in offence.”

CLAIRE HUNTER After eight years of basketball and five years representing SA Country, Claire is finally heading to her first national championships as an SA Country player as her perseverance and commitment has finally been rewarded. Claire is in the unique position of all the girls that have been selected in the Under 18 team, as well as earning a shot as a development player with the Pioneers, to have sat back and watched her two brothers, Lachlan and Mitchell, be able to aspire to playing for the Pioneers – an opportunity she thought would never come her way, until the women’s program was reinstated. “ I am looking forward to the opportunity to further develop my game in my local area without having to travel as much,” Claire said. “Also this is the first time in recent years we have had higher pathways for girls basketball in Mount Gambier so it’s exciting to be part of.” For most of these players, once SA Country commitments are over, there is no more elite training but for Claire, the chance to continue working and developing with the Pioneers Premier League squad was just too good to pass up. “I am looking forward to improving my game and meeting amazing basketballers who I am able to compete against and also learn from,” she said. “I think the amount of trainings I am exposed to will also help prepare me for future basketball opportunities.” Unlike some of the other development players, Claire has not worked as closely with Melissa Russell – until now. “Having Melissa as an assistant coach will give me a great chance to learn a different perspective of the game from a very knowledgeable and experienced basketball player and hopefully be able to put some of her tips and knowledge into my own game,” Claire said. “I am looking to focus and improve on my perimeter defence and attacking of the basket in offence, while team related I am looking to focus on offensive structures and knowing all roles on the court.”

EMILY DAWE Emily Dawe is no stranger to a basketball court – she has been on one since she was five years old. Her selection as a reserve for the Under 18 SA Country team for the national championships is just reward for a player that has been an integral part of SA Country campaigns in other competitions for five years and she was also one of the players chosen to head to New Zealand last year to play in an annual Easter tournament. The chance to not just continue with her SA Country training to develop her game, but to also try her hand at the Pioneers program has made it a big couple of weeks for the young basketballer. “I decided to commit to the Pioneers women’s program as it is a great opportunity for me to improve my skills by playing against tougher bodies,” Emily said. “It is also a chance for me to support Mount Gambier and to keep our town playing in high level competitions. I am looking forward to playing and training against tougher and smarter players, as well as continuously improving my skills.” The chance to work closely with Bryan Green, Matt Sutton, and, of course, Mount Gambier’s own WNBL representative Melissa Russell, is an opportunity of which Emily can’t wait to take advantage. “I am very excited to be working with Melissa Russell, especially with her knowledge of basketball,” Emily said. “She is an amazing coach, and I believe that we can work together to improve my skills. I believe that my main strength in basketball is my defence, as well as my determination to get the ball. I will look to use these strengths, as well as continuously work on my shooting.” CHECK OUT NEXT WEEK’S LIFESTYLE1 WHEN WE TALK TO OLI THOMSON, SARAH NULTY, JACOB GROSSER, OSCAR CLARK & EMILY CLOSE. Oscar Clark and Emily Close have been chosen as the two SA Country athletes to take the athlete’s oath at the national championships.

DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND Baseball resumed after the previous weekend’s Australia Day holiday. Back to back double headers were played by Division 1 teams on Friday night and Saturday. Federal drew first blood in the first of Friday night’s double header games against South Indians when in the bottom of the fourth dig Ryan Broome singled and scored on Tom Rundle’s hit to short stop whose throw to first caused an error by the first baseman. South replied in the top of the sixth after Dean Hamilton singled to centre-field and scored when a pitch went wild. In the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Broome again singled to left-field. He crossed the home plate on Clay Carpenter’s single to left-field and he in turn scored on Tom Rundle’s triple into right-field. The Indians had no answers in the shortened seven inning game leaving the Demons winners three runs to one. Both teams hit safely six times with the Indians picking up four strike-outs and four base on ball while the Demons had two strikeouts, two walks and one hit batter. South got off to a great start in game two when they scored four runs in the top of the first inning albeit three of them unearned. Leadoff, Ben Nash doubled to leftfield and scored on a wild throw from the second baseman. Bruce Morale walked and Dean Hamilton hit into an error by first base. Morale crossed home on Damien O’Dine’s single to centre-field, Hamilton scored on Travis Lockwood’s fielder’s choice hit back to the pitcher and O’Dine crossed on Hayden Timms’ fielder’s choice hit to second. Alex Reppin hit safely for Federal and scored on Sam Shepherd’s single to right-field before their inning was closed out. The Demons added one more in the bottom of the second when Gavin Smith singled to left-field and scored on Nathan Taylor’s double to right-field. Again in the third, Federal drew one run closer. Sam Shepherd hit safely to right-field and crossed on a wild pitch. In the top of the fourth, South’s Steve Isaccson, got on board from a fielder’s choice and scored on Dean Hamilton’s single. The Demon’s replied when Alex Reppin hit a two bagger to centre-field and scored on Sam Shepherd’s two base hit also to centre-field leaving the Indians in front five runs to four. However, in the sixth South took the game by the throat. Dean Lane walked, Steve Isaccson found himself at first on an error, Bruce Morale picked up his third safe-hit for the game which scored Lane, Dean Hamilton also doubled scoring Isaccson and Morale, Damien O’Dine got onboard hitting into an error at shortstop scoring Hamilton and crossed home on Travis Lockwood’s single to centre-field. The Demons added just one more run for the game when Wade Chant’s long hit to left-field sailed over the fence for a home run, the Indians turning the first game result around running out triumphant ten runs to five. South had eight safe-hits, six base on ball, six strikeouts and made two errors where Federal had fifteen safehits, four base on ball, three strikeouts and made six errors. BOYS BAT ALL DAY No joy for West Gambier in Crouch Shield action yesterday. The bowlers were unable to trouble Yahl opening duo Jarrod Sanders (far left) and Nick Brown (left) as the pair powered to an unbeaten stand of 244 off their 35 overs. Sanders clubbed an unbeaten 120, with Brown compiling 110no. and then the bowlers put the result beyond doubt, dismissing the hapless Roos for 46. In Barber Shield, things didn’t fare much better for the Roos, dismissed for 102, chasing East Gambier’s 7/181. Dion Stratford laid the groundwork for the Bulldogs with a solid 54, while Alex Hentschke did the damage with the ball, with 3/9. Michael Johnston led the way with the bat for North Gambier with 61, while Nick McInerney’s 5/11 ensured the Tigers enjoyed a convincing 155 run victory over South. In the remaining Barber Shield match, Penola secured the points over Mil Lel.

MAISIE DEBUTS IN SEASON OPENER Mundulla’s Maisie Nankivell has clearly shown promise in her first AFLW pre-season, earning a call-up to the Adelaide Crows round one side at the weekend. The star netballer had a solid opening hit out, with four kicks, one handball, three tackles, two marks and even four hit outs. She also kicked one of Adelaide’s 11 behinds in their one point loss to the Western Bulldogs. In her third season for the Crows, Sarah Allan had four kicks, three handballs, took two marks and laid a tackle. The Limestone Coast Women’s Football League was not so lucky with the opening round cancelled due to the heat policy. Round 1 was due to be played in Mundulla on Sunday.

LOCAL SPORT STATE CHAMPIONS Mount Gambier softball was again triumphant in the Senior State Championships held at West Beach over the Australia Day long weekend, successfully defending their State title. The team had a frustrating start to the tournament, losing 4-1 in both Saturday games courtesy of slow starts in the batting box and some questionable time wasting by opposition teams that saw scores revert back, despite Mount Gambier having hit the lead. Sunday saw a distinct improvement in team batting, scoring seven runs in the first inning against the Hills association team, then running out victors 17-8. A hard fought lost to Centrals 4-11, who continued to be undefeated, was followed by another win against Hills, 7-0, with Jade Peterson striking out eight batters in four innings. Mount Gambier went into Monday’s games in second position losing 5-2 in a dead rubber against Centrals who went straight into the grand final. The first final proved a dominant display by Mount Gambier who were leading 19-0 when time and game was called. Highlights for the game were two huge triples to Cody Manning, three hits each to Taylor Wilsmore and Mackenzie Millard, two hits apiece to Jo Hopgood, Nicole Vause, Montanna Millard and Raquel Sneath, with Peterson again showing her class to strike out four hitters in three innings. The 2019 grand final was a rematch of the 2018 decider, although this time it was Central Districts heading into the contest undefeated. Coach Leyna Bruggemann could not have been happier with the team scoring three runs in the first innings care of a lead off triple to Mackenzie Millard. Then a squeeze bunt

Jo Hopgood

GOOD MOVE I liked the move of the WBFL scheduling its first & second semi finals on the same weekend. In doing this it again gives any advantage, in terms of rest and preparation prior to the preliminary final, to the team that finished higher on the ladder….as it should be.

turned into a safe hit for Jo Hopgood who had a blinder of a game, ending up with four hits. Nicole Vause strode to the plate and lined a double to right field scoring two, prior to Bruggemann blooping a single for a third run. There was some misunderstanding in pitching distance which resulted in Centrals pitcher Mel Bone having pitched from the mens’ distance of 46 feet so Mount Gambier’s Peterson returned the favour and took to the longer distance mound, holding Centrals scoreless in the opening dig. The Mount Gambier side scored a further two runs in the second innings to Centrals’ none, with Fiona Finch hitting a single, then being scored by a Hopgood single up the middle, who in turn scored on another Vause hit. The third innings saw Centrals use the short game to score their only run for the game before the pressure from Mount Gambier forced a pitching change for Centrals. Mount Gambier piled on another four runs in the fourth, led off by yet another Mackenzie Millard triple before Hopgood cracked a double, then a long ball hitting the left field fence from Bruggemann for a triple. Peterson, showing no signs of fatigue, despite not having pitched for nine months, put the screws into the Centrals hitters striking out four of the last six batters for the game. Mount Gambier then added another four runs through another Hopgood single, a Jenna Burston hit and then a huge triple by Manning. Chelsea Fowler was the last allowed batter for the game, swatting a ball to left for a double with the score reverting back to a final 9-1 victory for Mount Gambier. There was no A grade competition this year so the team was crowned B grade women’s champions. Manning was simply outstanding in the championship, hitting two home runs and six

MAGNIFICENT COMPLEX Happened to be in Bendigo the other weekend watching some of the Mount Gambier Lakers in action. What an excellent facility the Bendigo basketball stadium is. In addition to having 10 fully air-conditioned basketball courts, the complex also housed a restaurant, a bar, a TAB and pokies. I’m not in the know, but I assume that the revenue drawn from these areas funds the complex. Some consider money obtained by gambling to be somewhat tainted but I feel that a sports minded person that likes a flutter would be happy that they are also supporting a sporting complex. Would ratepayers against the Mt Gambier community hub welcome this sort of set up I wonder?

triples in addition to back-to-back success winning the women’s home run derby. Vause replicated her consistent form from last year, leading the way with softball stalwart Hopgood who was solid as a rock at second base and got six safe hits from six at bats in the finals. Em Hart was hampered by a leg injury but made a terrific throw from right field to secure an out at the plate. The Millard sisters combined well, having to adjust to much tighter strike zones, with elder sister Montanna hitting the ball hard to the outfield on a number of occasions. Chelsea Fowler also hit some hard line drives, with Finch utilising her speed and bat speed to handle the quicker pitching without missing a beat. Quiet achiever Raquel Sneath was reliable with the bat, as was Wilsmore, who also showed positive onfield leadership. Jenna Burston proved an integral support to Bruggemann in the finals, providing coaching input and coming on at third base and getting a single in the pressure of the grand final. As the team batting shone in the end, Peterson’s influence on the confidence of the team was immeasurable. It was clear that although she will be returning to the Adelaide competition, she enjoyed every moment reteaming with the Mount Gambier girls and passing on her experience alongside veteran Caroline Gardner who could be a very welcome playing inclusion at next year’s championship. Dylan Walker, Di Humphries and Pam Wesolowski went along to the championships as support staff, while Blake and Orlando Vause took on the role of bat boys. WAR OF WORDS Have loved the for and against banter between ex-AFL player Kane Cornes and current AFL player Patrick Dangerfield following the off-field injury sustained by Port Power player Ollie Wines. Wines injured his shoulder and requires surgery following a water skiing accident. Cornes argues that such well paid athletes shouldn’t engage in any activity that carries a higher degree of risk….even when on holidays. Dangerfield, and other players, argue that they are entitled to a life outside football and even that it’s essential to be able to unwind from the high pressure and scrutiny. To most of us mere mortals that don’t earn the wages that an AFL footballer does it’s easy question why they would put themselves at risk as they have plenty of time for that when their career is over but equally not many professions dictate to the employees what they can and can’t do while they are on holiday.

GEORGIA EARNS NATIONAL TEAM CALL UP Mount Gambier softballer Georgia Hood backed up her batting MVP honour at the Open National Softball Championships by picking up the same award at the Under 19 National Championships. Her strong performances over the past fortnight has also saw the star player called up as a late inclusion into the Australia A team for last week’s Asia Pacific Cup and this week’s Summer Slam as she continues to put her name forward in front of national officials. The Asia Pacific Cup was played in Blacktown, Sydney, while the Summer Slam is at the same Blacktown venue.

VELODROME COMES ALIVE ON AUSTRALIA DAY

Amy Wight & Matthew Opperman leading the way The Mount Gambier Cycling Club was once again privileged to host the South Coast Cycling Club’s 2019 Australia Day Track Carnival on January 26 and 27. The delay on the refurbishment of the Edwardstown Velodrome meant that the South Coast Cycling Club again turned to the Blue Lake Sports Park Velodrome as its preferred venue. With more 30 riders from the South Coast Cycling Club, including cyclists from several other metropolitan clubs, the Mount Gambier Cycling Club made the most of this opportunity, inviting cyclists from clubs in South West Victoria, including Hamilton and Port Fairy. The two day carnival included an afternoon of more than 20 junior and senior events, both scratch races and handicapped, beginning at 1.30pm on the Saturday, with a further day of racing on Sunday. Saturday featured fast paced cycling led by two international riders, Mount Gambier’s Luke Wight, and South Coast Cycling Club’s Lewis Walker, both wearing their South Australian Institute of Sport (SASI) cycling kits. These guys predominantly shared first and second place in the events they entered and were also involved in the only crash of the weekend’s racing, along with Chris Kennett. Chris hit the fence hard, Luke rolled and slid over the concrete surface of the velodrome and Lewis catapulted over the railing thankfully landing safely on the grass. No riders suffered any serious injury and Lewis was able to recover sufficiently to compete in the Sunday morning events. Local riders that performed well in the junior events included Molly and Harry Opperman, Tess and Sophie Wight and Neil vanNiekirk, while the best performed senior

riders were Jack and Matthew Opperman and Amy Wight. The 80 lap Maddison was the highlight of the Sunday program in what is basically a team points race. The young South Coast Club duo of Ethan Birrane and Michell Natt managed to gain a lap on the field of competitors gaining an additional 20 points to offset their older and stronger rivals that collected the majority of sprint points and that secured the young duo the win. The best performed team with a local rider was Matthew Opperman and Chris Eichler, who finished third, while the all female team of Amy Wight (Mount Gambier) and Nikki Menzel (Hamilton), finished fourth. RECORD NUMBERS FOR VACSWIM PROGRAM Beachport comes alive every summer and this summer was no different with the Beachport VACSWIM program breaking attendance records for the second successive year. Held earlier this month, the 10 percent increase enjoyed in 2018 was eclipsed this year, with a 25 percent increase and more than 270 participants. Last year, the local program was recognised as the second largest beach program in regional SA. With many of the staff recruited from the Beachport Surf Life Saving Club, there was two Instructors in Charge, eight Instructors and five Assistant Instructors, as well as half a dozen other volunteers helping run the program. Instructor in charge Julie Moran said the Surf Life Saving program focuses on beach safety skills and aquatics rescues, as well as developing confidence swimming in open water. “Beach safety skills are important for all kids to learn, it is great to see that parents are recognising this and enrolling their children in beach programs,” she said. Some of the skills taught included how to recognise and escape from a rip, marine creatures, swimming, board paddling skills, rescues, first aid and CPR. Students completing Stage 10 will also be rewarded with a Community Surf Rescue Certificate. “This year the weather conditions have been very favourable compared to other years, however we have been challenged with large swell for a significant portion of the swimming program,” Julie said. “All participants are to be commended for their resilience in learning how to be safe at the beach and adapting to the conditions.” This program complements the Nippers program run by the local Beachport Surf Life Saving Club. These sessions are scheduled most Sunday mornings during the summer months. LOCAL SPORT BUSY SCHOOL HOLIDAYS FOR JUNIOR CRICKETERS

TENSE DRAW THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE ROUND Second placed Warriors Blue took on fourth placed Concordes White it what turned out to be the match of the round on Saturday. Concordes were without their injured pitcher Sam Brown, so part timer Jo Hopgood took over the pitching duties. She was helped immeasurably by a strong batting start by her team, with safe hits to Hannah Taylor and Leonie McCallum plating three runs in the first dig. Warriors then scored their lead off Justine Koop, after a lovely safe hit to Jenna Burston, who ended up with three hits for the day. Concordes then held Warriors in the next innings, thanks to some terrific outfield catches by Linda Dodds and Sarah Pilven. Chelsea Fowler was absolutely rock solid at short stop, making outs look easy with her rocket arm. The big bats of Warriors could not be held off forever however, and four consecutive hits from Nicole Vause, Leyna Bruggemann, Burston and Kelly Doyle saw Warriors push out to a 4-3 lead. Concordes used the short game to good effect in the next innings, as Hopgood bunted around her runner and they were both scored thanks to hits from Tylar Kennett and a couple of sacrifice infield hits. They retook the lead at 5-4 but Warriors immediately hit back, scoring again to take it to five-all going into the last dig. The last innings was a roller coaster ride for all involved as a few errors and some good base running saw Concordes score two runs and look to steal an unlikely victory. Hopgood managed to strike one out and induce a fly ball for the second out, but they could not get that elusive third out to win the game, and instead a error combined with a hard hit outfield ball from Bruggemann saw Warriors tie it up at seven apiece. Concordes were then able to secure the final out and end the game in a tie - which was a fitting result for such a hard fought match. RESULTS Concordes White 7 (J. Hopgood 3; L. McCallum 2; T. Kennett, H. Taylor, L. Dodds, A. McDonough) drew with Warriors Blue 7 (J. Burston 3; N. Vause, L. Bruggemann 2; K. Doyle, R. Sneath) Demons 5 (C. Manning 2; K. Morale, G. Millard, T. Wilson-Smith, M. Millard, M. Millard) d Wanderers 4 (C. Whiting 2; R .Smith; Warriors White 17 (T. Wilsmore 4; T. Pearson, C. Chaplin 3; E .Chaplin 2, D. Wombwell) d Concordes United 9 (B. Jones 3; D. Jones, M. Brodie 2; B. Miller, H. Taylor, S. Pilven, M. Sutherland)

For many junior cricketers in the South East, their school holidays were as busy as ever, with plenty of representative cricket played over the summer break. The South East Under 12 team returned home as Country Cup Champions, after winning all four of their matches. The Under 14 team finished runner-up, laoing the title decider to Fleurieu & Districts. The Under 14 boys did bring home plenty of other silverware through, winning the Spirit of Cricket Award, Kaidyn Weber winning the fielding trophy and Bodey Hosking sharing the bowling trophy and being named Player of the Carnival. As a result of their strong performances in the carnival, Kaidyn and Bodey, as well as Hamish Case, Corey Baker and Luke Homan earned selection in the Under 14 Country Black team to play in the Redbacks League. The boys have also been busy with commitments in Victoria, with Kaidyn, Bodey and Harry Fisher representing the Western Waves, finishing third in that competition. Kaidyn then earned selection for the Renegades Country team – an all star line-up set to play in the Youth Super Series.
