GOING TOE TO TOE WITH THE QUEEN OF AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION Sarah Brokensha’s most recent acting gig had her attempting to kill Aussie television’s favourite mum – Rebecca Gibney. The episode, of the third season of the TV series Wanted, recently aired on Channel 7, and was another amazing chapter in the career of the Mount Gambier based thespian. In a profession where, often, the time between paid gigs can be unpredictable, Sarah was on tour with a theatre production when a casting agent called and asked her to audition for the small screen opportunity. “I sent in a tape and got the gig which was awesome,” Sarah said. “It was such a nice experience and so good to be able to spend some time across from Rebecca Gibney. I learnt so much from just watching her and she was just so nice and so accommodating to everyone. Everyone loved her.” Sarah had every intention on being cool and professional when she met the critically acclaimed performer but admits she might not have been as cool as planned. “I got onto set and she was coming in for lunch and I went up to her and fan-girled a bit more than I hoped,” Sarah said. Filming was outside the Adelaide Women’s Prison and in the former Holden plant at Elizabeth. Sarah enjoyed working with the stunt double as well as she learned the ‘safe’ way to feign killing the popular Gibney by placing a plastic bag over her head. “It was fun working out the best way to make it look believable,” Sarah said. “The other great thing about working on

Wanted is Rebecca created it and there are all these amazing strong female protagonists and they are the heroes and the villains, It was nice to play a small part in this kind of project.” It is Sarah’s largest role to date. “I did a blink and you miss it role in the last season of Wolf Creek.” Sarah’s resume also includes a bit part in a feature film and a role in the TV series Rain Shadow. It would not be misguided to assume that Sarah’s move back to the Limestone Coast could have seen the work harder to come by, but the opposite has been true, with the past 18 months particularly busy. It is a career that owes much to Sarah’s time at Grant High School, where Mike Bakker was her drama teacher. “He was pretty rad,” Sarah said. “He was inspirational and that is definitely where my love of drama came from. We also did a trip to Adelaide to the theatre to see The King and I in Year 9 and I continued to fall in love with acting.” Sarah moved to Adelaide to finish her schooling at Pembroke College and that saw her enjoy her first regular exposure to attending the theatre and the passion grew. “I used to go to the State Theatre quite a bit and a couple of plays there really blew me away.” Even then, drama school wasn’t on Sarah’s radar until she was 22, after ski instructing and starting a marketing degree commanded her attention. “I was thinking about acting all the time to the point I knew I had to do something,” Sarah said.

That saw her earn a place at the Adelaide Centre for the Arts and she loved it – movement classes, acting in the afternoon, voice and singing lessons and circus skills. “I learnt so much and I was able to stop worrying about what other people thought and was keen to just get stuck into it.” And she certainly got well and truly stuck into it, working professionally since 2004, mainly in theatre but with the big and small screen efforts, as well. She has also gone on tour to New York and a couple of other lengthy theatre tour stints and it is her class mates that are still some of her closest friends – actors, writers and directors - and some are now working with Sarah on her own theatre production. “It’s about making your own opportunities and since moving back to Mount Gambier, it forced me to do that,” Sarah said. Sarah’s return to the region was in 2010, with now husband Liam Brokensha, was all about raising a family. The duo connected during Sarah’s ski instructing days and, in keeping with her other siblings, eventually exchanged vows at the family’s property here in the South East. “We had come back from time to time over the past 20 years to help out on the farm,” Sarah said. “Moving back has been a great move for us and now we really feel at home.” Being home is great and the support Sarah is receiving from Country Arts SA as she puts the finishing touches on her own production has also made the move back to her roots a success. With

Gambier and the development is done – now we have to apply for the grants and make sure this happens,” Sarah said. “No one can be just an actor, you have to be other things. And you have to be in it for the long game – that is so cliched but so true.”

OPPORTUNITY FOR SMALL BUSINESS Small businesses in Barker will benefit from the Coalition Government’s introduction of a $2 billion Australian Business Securitisation Fund. Member for Barker Tony Pasin said many small business owners find it difficult to obtain finance unless they put up their family home as collateral. “Even when small businesses can access finance, funding costs are higher than they need to be,” Mr Pasin said. “To overcome this and ensure our local small businesses are able to grow, the Australian Business Securitisation Fund will invest up to $2 billion in the securitisation market. This will provide significant additional funding to smaller banks and non-bank lenders to on-lend to small businesses on more competitive terms. With more than three million small businesses employing around seven million Australians, enhancing small business access to funding is part of our Government’s plan for a stronger economy.”

two beautiful children to care for, the support networks Sarah has established back at home, the support of Liam and the willingness of her former classmates to often come to her to work on the upcoming project has allowed Sarah to continue her acting dream. “We have worked on this in Adelaide and Mount

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - BAD DECISIONS… By ROBBIE TANSEL I bought myself a Frozen Coke yesterday. And it wasn’t until I’d ordered it, paid for it, and then left the restaurant that I remembered that I don’t like

Frozen Cokes. Frozen Cokes are stupid. They are a silly idea. Take something that is perfectly good in it’s current form and

make it less good. A glass of Coke is fantastic. A glass of Pepsi is even better. So why on Earth do you need to mix it up with crushed ice? When I start drinking, or is it eating, my Frozen Coke, everything seems fine. It’s sweet, it has a lovely cola flavour, and it’s travelling easily up the straw with the stupid tiny spoon on the end. The stupid tiny spoon straw is the first problem with the Frozen Coke, by the way. It doesn’t take long for things to go downhill with the Frozen Coke though. Rapidly the Coke syrup seems to be sucked out of the ice. Don’t ask me to explain the science as to why the syrup gets sucked up, leaving an incorrect ice to syrup ratio in your cup. It just happens. Then you’re left with a Frozen Coke that isn’t very Cokey, but is also not straight up crushed ice. Crushed ice would be partially acceptable. Instead you’re left with crushed ice that has a vague cola aftertaste. The next problem comes when you’re left with a slushy which is now too heavily ice and will no longer travel easily up the straw. Now you’re stuck relying on the stupid little straw spoon. When I buy a drink, I don’t intend to consume it using a spoon. It’s ridiculous and silly. But if I did, I’d want a spoon that allows you to scoop a reasonable quantity up. A spoon that struggles to scoop anything would not be my first choice of implement. Just to be clear, there is only one acceptable form of Coke. It’s called Coke. Frozen Coke? Wrong. Diet Coke?

Gag. Coke Zero? It’s black because if it had a heart, it would have a black, black heart. Vanilla Coke? All right that’s the one exception to the rule. Vanilla Coke is possibly even better than Coke Coke. The other interesting thing as a Coke aficionado is the difference between Coke from a glass bottle, Coke from a plastic bottle and Coke from a can. As anyone who knows anything knows, Coke from a glass bottle is better than other forms of Coke. Many people may think they are the same drink, just in different containers, but there is a clear difference in what is being drunk. Before the dieticians start waffling on about Coke being bad for you, I am convinced that Coke is actually beneficial to my body. Let me explain. About nine months from Donna and my wedding day, Donna decided that she wanted me to stop drinking Coke, or other Cola beverages until our wedding day. This was in retaliation for me wanting her to stop socially getting cancer. I don’t get social smokers. Show a bit of commitment. If you think it’s a good idea to smoke, get into it and do it! Anyway, despite knowing that cola drinks were a key part of my life, I decided to do the right thing. About six months later I started having intense pain, the worst pain I’ve felt in my life, in my abdomen. After spending some

time in the hospital it was decided I had kidney stones, a build up of calcium in my urinary system which had broken loose and was now trying to exit my body through my urethra. Doctors gave me a variety of drugs to try to make the pain go away, but I won’t tell you where they eventually had to insert the medication to achieve this. If I was to think this was the end of the difficulty, I was to be sadly wrong. I managed to end up in the hospital every two weeks four more times in the most agonising pain of my life, including the time I accidentally cut the end off my finger with a stick blender. Eventually the doctors decided to send me to Adelaide to have some weird claw/camera inserted into my urethra to remove the calcium rock. I won’t tell you about the feeling of my first pee after this procedure, or the excitement I felt when the doctor told me they couldn’t find anything and I’d obviously passed it some time in the previous couple of days. The point is, I got married about a week after the operation, I drank about seven cans of Coke, and I’ve never had kidney stones since. Therefore Coke is a highly effective health drink. If Coke would like to sponsor me, feel free to email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com

MCHAPPY DAY HELPER Member for Barker Tony Pasin helped out on McHappy Day to help raise funds for Ronald McDonald House for families with seriously ill children. “Since it first started in 1991, McHappy Day has raised more than $42 million for RMHC including over $4 million last year,” said Mr Pasin. He helped out serving customers at the drive through at the Mount Gambier Central McDonalds store and said there was a terrific response from the public. “Each year people get around this event because it goes towards such a good cause and ultimately helps to benefit so many people, especially seriously ill children and their families, who deserve our generosity,“ he said. Funds raised on McHappy Day go towards a range of RMHC programs including Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, the Ronald McDonald Learning Program and Ronald McDonald Family Retreats Program. Over the past 30 years more than 100,000 Australian families have benefitted through RMHC programs. The 14 Ronald McDonald Houses alone have provided 89,000 families with a home-away-from-home while their child undergoes treatment for serious illness at a nearby hospital.

NEW ACCOMMODATION FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES OPENS ITS DOORS Families and people with disabilities in Mount Gambier will now have more support and security following the opening of the Ryder-Cheshire Foundation’s new home. Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin, who attended last week’s opening, said the assisted accommodation home will cater for up to five adults at a time. “This new home will provide care and support around the clock each day in a normal household environment, with six bedrooms, each with an ensuite built to disability standards,” Mr Pasin said. “With two lounge areas, a kitchen, common area and laundry as well as a private garden and secure fencing, this facility has been built with the comfort

of its residents in mind, helping to ensure they feel at home.” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Federal Liberal and Nationals’ Government’s $530,000 investment will provide more care options for families in the region. “By creating additional accommodation locally, this project will help reduce the financial, physical and emotional strain involved in securing disability-friendly housing far away from their family members and home,” Mr McCormack said. “This project delivered important social outcomes and through creating 14 jobs during construction and supporting another 17 ongoing roles, we have also contributed to a stronger economic future for Mount Gambier – a win all around.” This project was jointly funded with the Liberal and Nationals’ Government investing $530,000, Ryder-Cheshire Australia $250,000, Ryder-Cheshire Mount Gambier Home Foundation $214,343, Rotary Club of Mount Gambier $20,000 and private donations worth $86,000. South Australian communities and we are proud to support an investment that can potentially save lives and promote awareness and use of defibrillators in regional areas,” Peter said. Each year approximately 30,000 Australians suffer from sudden cardiac arrest. St John Ambulance SA CEO Michael Cornish said there is a 90% chance of surviving a cardiac arrest if defibrillated within the first minute; for every minute that passes, the chance of survival reduces by 10%. “St John Ambulance SA strongly believes high visibility public sites that are open 24 hours are ideal places for a defibrillator and we are very happy to see OTR helping to look after the wellbeing of South Australians, particularly in regional communities” Michael said.

IN THE GARDEN After many years providing the region with unusual garden pots and giftware and continually growing and expanding into new areas, Gardenarium has seized the opportunity with the recent closures of many gift shops in Mount Gambier to introduce a wider range and has launched its newest foray, expanding its range of Christmas gift ideas from those associated with and around the gardening scene to covering all aspects of Christmas gift ideas for all members of the family. After significant travels, we have sourced unique and unusual gift ideas, focussing again on small batches of unusual offerings as well as continuing our search from under developed countries and offering their inhabitants the opportunity to improve their living conditions. (see some of what’s on offer on the facing page) but you really do need to call in with our pre-Chrismas sale in full swing and around only five weeks to go, time is getting away. Live Christmas tree orders are rolling in well and we are nearly sold out of some varieties in certain sizes. Wollemi Pines are well and truly back as a Christmas tree or indeed gift for that hard to buy for someone who loves a living fossil (and no I don’t mean Dame Edna). Orders for all our Christmas type trees are rolling in well from the multitude of Poms, Brits, Americans, Europeans, Canadians, South Africans and many more who love their traditional, real Christmas trees. Ordering NOW, for pick up closer to Christmas, is

By Calum Haygarth Landscape Architect & Horticultural Consultant

advised, as we always seem to sell out quickly with only a limited number we can grow. Here at Gardenarium and The Pot Shop we are bursting at the seams with Christmas gift ideas and with less than four weeks to go you should be well underway with Christmas shopping. We have the whole family covered for Christmas this year, not just for gardeners, from wall plaques for the cubby house, and children’s tools, right through to fruit trees, berries and ornamental trees, and then on to quality outdoor furniture settings, bar chairs and tables and, as ever, a whole new range of outdoor garden benches, fountains and birdbaths. Last season we became the stockists for the Limestone Coast region for Kensington high quality teak outdoor furniture, expanding the teak and outdoor wicker range and adding a conservatory range (see website) adding

solid teak dining chairs, daybeds, bar tables and stools. They have a warranty second to none. This year we have added two styles of solid teak benches after listening to your requests for a good solid, traditional garden bench, hurry in as at 25% off they have been selling well. The pre-Christmas sale that ended last Sunday has been continued, so the good news is if you missed out on any of the hundreds of specials throughout the entire Gardenarium and Limestone Coast Group specials then there is still time. Much of our stock are one-offs found on our buying trips, and specialist, small amounts of products are only available. To keep our ranges unique, current and exclusive we aim to offer you, exclusive products, many from poor and underdeveloped countries, which we try to support as much as possible. With driftwood birdhouses from the Philippines, to wrought iron and cast iron ware from within Australia, a new range of birdhouses and feeders for native birds in our GumNut Collection (see website for details) and statues from Indonesia, the range is overwhelming. Stock is handpicked from small batches and we will never have them again - a great gift idea for that someone special, safe in the knowledge that no one else will have them. The Old Potting Shed Gift Shop section has undergone further expansion and as the days roll on more and more Christmas stock is being put

out. You can lay by now for Christmas and leave picking up until Christmas Eve if you wish, this includes trees, Christmas trees and all other plants. A new shipment of real wicker furniture has just arrived along with our new 2019 range of outdoor tables in Natural Wood Look Ceramic tile tops, as well as travertine stone and marble, cast aluminium, PVC German wicker, with three year warranty, as well as our new teak furniture, which has been expanded with a modern Industrial style (see website for details). Are you planning to dine outside this Christmas or will be doing a lot of entertaining? Perhaps now is the time to look at upgrading your old outdoor setting or buy one that will last a lifetime. Some of the newest stock to arrive includes new cast iron firepits, ponds or planters, a whole host of new farm yard animals in much bigger sizes than those we have previously stocked, and a new range of high quality garden ponds (see website) gardening gloves, right up to long arm gloves in soft leather to protect from rose thorns. Our second shipment of driftwood Christmas trees, wreaths and stars, reindeers and beautiful angels has also just arrived from the Philippines, as well as interesting themed birdhouses like surf shack, railway station and even a church. The Pot Shop has also brought in a fantastic new range of wrought iron arbors and tree seats, garden arches,

rose towers, obelisks, cast iron wall art and decorative rose poles and wisteria rings to complement any garden. These structures are heavy duty and designed to last and age gracefully to blend in to most gardens. We also have cast aluminium weathervanes for those in coastal areas. And, of course, if it all get too hard then we have the good old gift vouchers in any denomination and they are valid for 12 months. So, whatever the gardener or non-gardener in your life is hoping for this Christmas be sure to make a trip to Gardenarium and The Pot Shop and Limestone Coast Roses and Advanced Trees and wander through the amazing array of goodies. Open every day except Monday to 5.30pm and 5pm on Saturdays & Sundays. 167, Bay Road, (Riddoch Hwy) Mount Gambier, see the website for details. P.S. Christmas lily orders are being taken at present.

MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION SET TO BENEFIT FROM OPEN GARDEN AT A GLANCE

Cobi & Cary Jennings are long time supporters of the Open Gardens South Australia scheme and this year they are opening their garden on December 1 & 2, giving people plenty of opportunity to wander through and admire one of Mount Gambier’s most talked about residential gardens, and to help raise funds for their chosen charity - Make-AWish Foundation. The acre block was an empty nest project for Cobi, in particular, and, as it was back in 2016 when wild weather caused the rescheduling of the Jennings Open Garden weekend, were it not for the surrounding hedge, the damage from the recent wild weather could have caused serious damage to the wellplanned haven. And while much is made of the more than 600 roses in the 16 Turnbull Avenue garden, there are features everywhere you look. The eastern hedge was the first installation at the Turnbull Avenue property, followed by perimeter bark to keep onion weed at bay. “We brought in eight truckloads of bark which I

proceeded to spread with a bucket and my gloved hands,” Cobi said. “It took me four months.” The southern hedge was next, followed by perimeter plantings of roses, agapanthus, trees and daylilies, as well as a sprinkler system. Cobi then afforded herself some serious thinking time to plan the rest of the space, which is on quite a steep, sloping block, as the couple focussed on building the house for the next two years. With the plans in place, it then all came down to manpower as truckload after truckload of top soil was transported and spread and the large feature moss rocks were put in place. Bricks for edging, a box hedge, the conifer slope and the azalea bed all then took shape as magnolias, wisteria, camellias, pear trees, bulbs, bearded iris and flowering cherry trees were all added. “I just kept expanding the more and more ideas I had,” Cobi said. “The biggest challenge is fitting your ideas into the space.” And those ideas included water

And so orchids, cyclamens and ferns became part of the Jennings garden which to this point had been a five year project with a boardwalk also one of the more recent additions “It is not that high maintenance, I usually spend maybe 10-15 hours a week out there,” she said. “But it is a lot more leading into the open garden, which we always have in spring because it’s when the roses look their best. It’s like getting a house ready for open inspection.” The Jennings Garden is open between 10am and 4pm on December 1 & 2, with Maxine Tuffnell and her cancer support group colleagues offering morning and afternoon tea for patrons, as well as light lunches. Entry is $8 with concessions available.

MOUNT GAMBIER HIGH SCHOOL TO HEADLINE NEW PROGRAM Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell has welcomed the selection of Mount Gambier High School as one of two regional sites for the State Government’s entrepreneurial schools program. The program, which will see five South Australian high schools develop dedicated learning programs to promote and encourage entrepreneurial mindsets in students, will see $6.3million in funding over the next four years. Last week, Mr Bell joined Minister for Education John Gardner at Mount Gambier High School, where they met with Principal Chris Edmonds and students. Mr Bell said the pioneering program would help foster an education curriculum which would equip students with valuable skillsets for future career paths. “As a former educator, I know how well students respond to inspiration and mentorship and this program will help shape the future directions of some of our brightest young minds,” he said. “Today’s world moves at a fast pace and students require an everexpanding skillset to keep up-to-date with current industry and business trends.” The selected schools will receive support to develop facilities, professional development opportunities and learning resources. As part of the program includes resource sharing with other education facilities, Mr Bell said he expected the program to have flow-on benefits to other Limestone Coast schools and students. “Students in regional cities deserve the same opportunities as those living in metropolitan areas and I commend the Marshall Liberal Government for recognising the importance of investment in the regions,” he said. “With this program joining Flinders University’s New Venture Institute, the city of Mount Gambier is fast becoming a regional entrepreneurial hub – an excellent training ground for innovators. I look forward to seeing how this program shapes the next generation of South Australian entrepreneurs.” Above - Mount Gambier MP Troy Bell shares a selfie with Minister for Education John Gardner and Mount Gambier High School students Angel Aguinaldo, Josh Kain, Luke King, Marni Black & Michael Jackway.

HOMECOMING QUEEN OF THE COURT She’s back and feeling right at home. Bordertown born and bred talent Cody Lange is back in Adelaide for her second stint as an Adelaide Thunderbird and with two knee reconstructions and a strong Australian National Netball (ANL) season behind her, that resulted in her captaining her team, the Tasmanian Magpies, to the title, Lange is ready to now make her mark, again, on Australia’s most elite competition – Suncorp Super Netball. It is a netball career that dates back to Bordertown when Lange was a seven year old. “My two older sisters played and I used to watch them play in the Saturday morning town competition at the local courts and I just wanted to do what they were doing,” Lange said. When the talented goaler hit the Under 13 age group, she joined the stronger Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Netball Association (KNTNA) with the Bordertown club and her rise was nothing short of meteoric. Playing alongside her friends in the junior grades, she was quickly also recruited for the senior teams as a Year 8 student. As a junior, Lange also followed the usual path of representing the KNTNA at both Victorian and South Australian Country championships and was a member of the South East regional championships team for a couple of years as well. At the same time, Lange was juggling a promising basketball career, making her first State team when she was in Year 8. meaning most weekends

she was in Adelaide, so when Year 10 hit, it made sense for her to take up a position at Immanuel College, where she finished her schooling and started to focus more on her netball goals. It was the year she moved that she was selected to represent South Australia for the first time, as a netballer, and, ironically, she was not playing club netball at the time, only representing Immanuel in the school competition. That was when she had her first contact with now Thunderbirds head coach Tania Obst. “The State team needed me to be training more than I was so I was doing that training through SASI (South Australian Sports Institute) and I was working with Tania (Obst),” Lange said. That experience saw Lange make the tough decision between basketball and netball in 2010 – opting for netball – and she was immediately rewarded with a training position in the extended Adelaide Thunderbirds squad for the next year. “I was 16 at the time and that was a turning point for me,” Lange said. The luck continued to roll with the teenage shooting sensation, when she was called into the main Thunderbirds squad for the 2011 courtesy of injury to a team mate. It saw Lange juggling elite netball and senior school and certainly presented its challenges but the opportunity was just too good to refuse. “I had such great support from the team, I really felt they nurtured me through it,” Lange said. “I was training alongside Nat Von Bertouch and Sharni (Layton) and Bec Bulley and those type

of girls and you just learn so much.” Then came the chance to represent her country at the Under 21 World Cup, returning home with a silver medal before a return to the Thunderbirds for the 2014-16 seasons. It was round two of the 2016 season that saw Lange suffer her first real setback since pursuing her netball dreams – she ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament and was sidelined for the remainder of the year. “I was just hitting my straps in terms of earning a regular position on court but I guess it was just a cursed year for the Thunderbirds,” Lange said. That was the season, Renae Hallinan fell pregnant and Amy Steel was struck down with glandular fever. Lange admits to initially being devasted by the season ending injury but looking back can see the opportunities it then presented for her. “It also made me realise how much

MENTAL HEALTH IN FOCUS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Year 8 students from across the Glenelg Shire have used their artistic flair to share in $1000 worth of prizes and promote the importance of positive mental health following the announcement of the 2018 Live4Life Glenelg art competition winners. Eleven students received a competition award at the 2018 Live4Life Glenelg celebration event last week for their creative responses to the 2018 Live4Life theme: ‘Perfectly, Imperfect’. The competition is run annually by the Live4Life Glenelg crew to help promote a positive approach to mental health awareness to year eight students in the shire, with this year’s awards sponsored by the Port of Portland. lifestyle1.net | 29

I love playing netball so it probably sharpened my focus in terms of achieving my goals,” she said. “I guess it’s true what they say – ‘what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger’.” Her rehabilitation was going smoothly with the Thunderbirds when the opportunity to join powerhouse Super Netball franchise Collingwood presented itself. “To get to play with a start up club, a new club was amazing,” Lange said. It didn’t hurt that she was set to be rubbing shoulders with a swag of Australian Diamonds, giving her another chance to learn from the best and develop her own game. She didn’t start the 2017 season as she completed her knee rehabilitation but then was able to secure court time, nine games in total, in the star studded line-up, playing alongside Caitlin Thwaites. “It was a really good environment,” Lange said. “I learnt as much off the court as I did on it.” But another speed hump was on the way, with Lange rupturing the ACL in her other knee and finding herself back on the rehabilitation trail again. “Obviously I knew what to expect and what I needed to do second time around,” Lange said. “Collingwood was just so supportive and once I had the surgery for me, it was all systems go. I just wanted to make sure everything went smoothly and I nailed it.” With the second knee reconstruction, Lange was initially focussed on simply returning to the netball court – whatever level that

might be. Through hard work, that ended up being her place as captain of the Tasmanian Magpies ANL team, leading them to the title, and after refusing to put the pressure on herself to return to Super Netball, the success of 2018 had fuelled the fire. “I had got through a full season and was motivated again,” she said. And then the chance to come home – the call from the Adelaide Thunderbirds to again don the pink uniform after a two year hiatus. The chance to play alongside Maria Folau and to team back up with former mentor Obst certainly a huge temptation. “I’ve looked up to Maria (Folau) for years,” Lange said. “When I saw she was in the team, such an amazing athlete, and now having trained with her a couple of weeks ag, I am really looking forward to it. Working with Sasha (Glasgow) as well will be great and we will be a different shooting circle to the other teams. We are a shorter, moving goal circle and I am really looking forward to what we can do.” The back to basics style of coaching under Obst suits Lange to a tee. “She is all about nailing the basics and being able to do them over and over again, even under immense pressure,” Lange said. “Even at the top level, netball is a game where you have to be able to pass, catch and shoot.” Above - Cody Lange at last week’s Mount Gambier coaching clinic..

LOCAL SPORT CONCORDES UNITED TAKE THE POINTS IN A CLOSE TUSSLE

BEST OF THREE - NOT FOR ME I’ve been following with interest the supposed push by Adelaide Crows & Sydney Swans for a best of three AFL grand final. Sports Nut is firmly in the no thank you camp. Yes, a best of three would increase the chances of the best team winning…but if you want the best team to win then you don’t need any finals simply declare whoever finishes top as the winner -English Premier League style. The fact that the underdog has a chance is the very essence of the one-off grand final. Many an underdog coach has used the line ‘if we played them 100 times we might only win once but today is going to be that day!’ I couldn’t imagine the players being happy with a best of three concept in a sport that has such a high attrition rate. Would you feel as much a member of a premiership team if you played game one but then missed games two and three with an injury? The AFL has recently gone the other way, abolishing grand final replays in favour of extra time so a winner is decided on the day. Inevitably what the AFL does filters down to local level. Will we have a best of three grand final series in the Western Border, Mid South East & Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara leagues in the future? All three leagues enjoyed epic grand finals this year with the result in each league being decided by less than a kick. That excitement of hanging on every passage of play in the dying minutes, not sure when the siren was going to blow would be diluted if it was only game one of a best of three. And what about the years when the grand final is a more lopsided contest? It does happen - especially in a four team finals series. A lower ranked team can often ‘play its grand final’ on preliminary final day and knock out a more favoured team... only to come out flat and get belted on grand final day. Who wants to sit through game two of that series? Perhaps to ensure we have the best two teams in the grand final we need to introduce a best of three preliminary final series.

FOUL TACTIC Talent alone might not get a sportsperson to the top of their chosen sport. Tactics or intimidation come into play to try to put opponents off their game. Obviously nothing is out of bounds at the Grand Slam of Darts. Opponents Gary Anderson & Wesley Harms both accused each other of flatulence to put the other off in their last of 16 match in England last week. Let’s hope this tactic doesn’t catch on in other sports, especially for the sake of fans at the game.

It was a close and entertaining tussle between Concordes United and Wanderers in round five action t the weekend, as the first round of the 2018/19 season came to a close. Concordes scored almost immediately in the first, with a walk to Dana Jones and then a lovely two bagger to sister Billie Jones to plate the run. Wanderers however replied immediately with three runs in the bottom of the first, thanks to consecutive two baggers to Cathy Whiting and Em Hart. It was however the second innings that proved to be decisive for Concordes, as they plated a season best six runs, with some walks combined with a two bagger from Julie Beck and a lovely safe hit from youngster Emily Sutherland. Dana Jones, for Concordes ,then pitched really well for the next couple of innings, well backed up by her field ,including a couple of heads up double plays at important moments. With the score at 7-6 going into the bottom of the last innings, it looked like Wanderers were going to steal the victory with MOUNT GAMBIER & DISTRICT TENNIS ASSOCIATION Division One - Men Uniting Church 6-38 d Glencoe Maroon 0-19 Singles: I. SOUTH AUSSIE HOTEL BACKS T20 COMPETITION

LOCALS SHINE AT STATE KARTING EVENT

Mark Lane is a strong supporter of local sport and he has added T20 cricket to the stable of sporting groups and competition the South Aussie Hotel backs through sponsorship. The popular pub has secured the naming rights for the 2018/19 Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association T20 competition and part of that deal will see a genuine party atmosphere served up on finals day on February 10 at Marist Park. There will be a pop up bar and food on offer, as well as a VIP area set up in the picturesque venue on a day when the semi finals will be contested at 1pm and the final on the same day at 4.30pm. “I love supporting local sport, I always have,” Lane said. “Sport is just such a huge part of this community and I am happy to get behind it so it can continue and grow.” Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association vice president Robbie Drenthen was excited to announce the new deal, which both parties expect to continue for many summers to come. The South Aussie Big Bash T20 Cup kicks off on Thursday, November 29 with matches at McCorquindale Park, Frew Park, Malseed Park and Scott Park. Eight teams are set to contest the 2018/19 title – Penola, Millicent, Mil Lel, South Gambier, West Gambier, East Gambier, North Gambier and Glencoe. Round two will be played on December 13, with the third and final round on January 17, ahead of the February 10 finals day. And it’s not just the T20 competition set to enjoy the South Aussie Hotel’s support, with the pub also set to be the host venue of the junior and senior trophy presentation events for the 2018/19 season. The representative season is also starting to ramp up with the local round of the Statewide Country T20 competition taking place

Earlier this month Mount Gambier Karting Club played host to karters from across South Australia, as well as interstate, as drivers competed for the 2018 South Australian Black Plate. It is the second successive year the Glenburnie track has hosted the prestigious event. Three locals het the track for the Cadet 9 with Charlie Evans finding his way onto the podium in second with Xavier Kain finishing fourth and Hayley Fewins in sixth. The largest field of the weekend was the Cadet 12 with Parker Scott and Brock Fewins flying the flag for the local club. Parker put in a solid performance to finish seventh, while mechanical failure saw Brock unable to complete the event. KA4 Junior Light has produced some amazing racing in 2018 and homegrown talent and current national champion Kai Allen finished first, with other local hopes Bronson Boult (fourth) and Tyson White (fifth) making it a strong category for the host club. KA4 Junior Heavy was some of the more exciting racing of the weekend with local driver Keean Ferguson more than holding his own to finish fifth. KA3 Junior saw the three locals take up the front of the grid and in the end, Kai Allen (second) and Jobe Stewart (third) found their way onto the podium but unfortunately Bronson Boult was unable to finish. NEW LOOK PORT MACDONNELL FORESHORE READY FOR SUMMER The District Council of Grant has completed Stage 1 of a two-staged foreshore redevelopment in time for the 2019 summer season. Works have been completed at a cost of $1.17million, co-funded between council and the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure. District Council of Grant Mayor Richard Sage, Deputy CEO Jane Fetherstonhaugh and Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell, officially opened The Waterfront project at a launch at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex ast week. Key stakeholders and companies involved in delivering the project came together to celebrate a successful outcome. Council CEO David Singe stated that the Stage 1 upgrades have delivered a more attractive and accessible foreshore area that is suitable for the local community and visitors alike. “These works were originally identified in the Port MacDonnell Masterplan in 2014 and we are really pleased that with the help of funding from the South Australian State Government, we have completed the first step in delivering a redeveloped foreshore,” Mr Singe said. “Council congratulates everyone involved in this project and in particular we thank the local community for their patience during the wintery construction period, where most of the area was inaccessible and heavy equipment and machinery was located on site. I would like to make particular mention to Oxigen, the design team who worked with Council staff in 2017 to develop a strong vision for the space. At the launch Travis Wright, one the lead designers, travelled to Port MacDonnell to survey the final project and meet the various contractors involved. Gambier Earth Movers were the successful company to tender for the project, and over the past eight months have worked with Council staff and other contractors to deliver the final result, which is a wonderful asset for the region. I would also like to thank the hard work of the Council staff, who have project managed the Waterfront and put great thought and consideration into each and every detail of the construction.” The project began ast year under the State Labor Government and has continued on successfully under the leadership of the Liberal Government and Minister Stephan Knoll. Council are currently working on developing the project plan for Stage 2, which will feature a new regional playground adjacent to the redeveloped foreshore area.

This time last year, Kate Goodman was awaiting advice from her oncologist to understand if she was clear of breast cancer; one year on Kate Goodman has been awarded the Australian Women in Wine Awards, Winemaker of the Year. The head winemaker of Penley Estate in Coonawarra, South Australia and the Owner/Winemaker of Goodman Wines in the Yarra Valley, Kate has established a career across two states making the styles of wine she loves, while also fulfilling her obligations as a mother, partner and survivor of breast cancer. Kate was presented with the award at Quay Restaurant, Sydney on Friday, November 16, by Garry King of Tonnellerie Saint Martin, sponsor of Australian Women in Wine Awards, at which time Kate was acknowledged for her deftness and agility to create a new generation of Penley Estate wines while simultaneously establishing her own wine company in a few short years. Kate is a founding member of Yarra Valley Wine Women and her career spans nearly 30 years across familiar wine brands such as Wirra Wirra, Seppelt, Tim Knappstein and Punt Road Wines. “While gender doesn’t necessarily make you a better winemaker, it is heart-warming to feel the support of other women in the industry and to use this award to encourage young women to achieve what they set out to do in the wine industry,” said Kate. “It can be a tough industry for anyone. It’s physical and can be dirty work but there is an active and strong community of women who make it easy for us to share, learn and acknowledge the challenges we can face so others find it easier to forge a rewarding career in wine. Importantly awards like this also demonstrate anything is possible; it’s not just about being the loudest voice in the room.” Kate lives in the Yarra Valley with her partner and seven year-old son and chose to start her own wine company when she required more flexibility to juggle her responsibilities as a mother and continue a career she loved. Goodman Wines became a reality in 2014 and in 2016 Kate’s long time friend Ang Tolley asked her to join the Penley Estate team as their chief lifestyle1.net | 35

winemaker to help them turn the company into a shining new light in Coonawarra. “I knew Kate would bring something special to the Penley brand, owing to her love of cabernet and her desire to push the boundaries. Bec and I are thrilled for Kate in receiving this award,” Ang Tolley said. Bec was similarly impressed by Kate’s achievement, stating: “This award is well-deserved recognition of Kate’s incredible talents, we are so proud to have her as part of our Penley team,” she said. Ang and her sister Bec Tolley took the reigns of Penley Estate from their brother Kym in 2015. As direct descendants of the Penfold family with lifelong ties to the South Australian wine industry they recognised the heart, talent and expertise of Kate to transform their wines into more bright, contemporary and universally attractive wines. Kate travels fortnightly to Coonawarra during the year and weekly over the harvest period from February to April. She has worked with their heritage vineyard to create a more fresh and vibrant expression of Penley Estate cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and shiraz. Kate’s battle with breast cancer last year was not known to judges for this year’s Australian Women in Wine Awards, yet the award has reassured Kate of her rightful place in the industry and to never take for granted the help and support of her industry colleagues.
