GET READY TO ROCK ON THE RAILS 5THE FM sits in the heart of Millicent and the converted railway station is a thriving community radio station that continues to ensure the emphasis is on the community it serves. Sharing the stories of its community over the airwaves has always been its core business but it is also at the centre of community development, through its in-school broadcasting training, and its involvement in major community events. This Sunday is one of those events – Rock on the Rails – 5THE FM’s inaugural rock festival, taking advantage of its perfect location and having it on site at the station grounds. It will be opened by newly declared Member for MacKillop Nick McBride but once those formalities are over, it’s all about the music and having fun, running from 1pm “until we’re done”, as the festival’s
promotional period promises. The stage is being provided by major sponsors Bowmans Earthmovers, who are providing a low loader for the occasion, and that is where eight acts, including four rocks bands, a couple of soloists and blues and jazz acts as well, will entertain the local community. There will also be food stalls, a barbecue, soft drinks, a licensed area and raffles as crowds fill the gardens at 5THE FM to enjoy the jam packed program. Well known local John McLoughlin and Gary King, of Channel 9’s Bandstand days are part of the program, along with soloist Drew Baker, Wise, Tom Schumaker and headliners JB and Crowey, who have been filling venues around the South East and there are still more acts to be announced this week. The free event is made possible by the
generous support of the following sponsors – Bowmans Earthmovers, Absolutely Anything, Millicent Medical Clinic, SE Property Sales & Management, Rob Dycer and Rosie Fartch, Anne and Bianca Bierwirth, Holla Fresh, Fosters Foodland, Sebastapol Farm Machinery, Jacqui Bateman Photography, Millicent Lions and Lionesses, McCourts Garden Centre and Florist, K&S Fuels. “The community support for this event has been outstanding,” station manager Sheryl Lowe said. The event is already booked for 2019 and will coincide with the Geltwood Festival to make Millicent a real destination for that weekend. The 2018 Geltwood Festival, a drawcard for art and craft lovers, runs from April 13-17. “This first festival is just to show people what it is all about and what our plans are,” Sheryl said. “We want to be a

centre for live music and we will also be live broadcasting the event, especially as we do have older listeners who might not be able to make it down.” The inaugural Rock on the Rails will also be streamed live. “It is a great opportunity for local artists to not just perform live but to be on radio,” Sheryl said. “Without community radio many of these artists would not have a platform. This festival is something we have been planning for a long time, probably 10 years, and now it is happening.” There will be donation tins at the event. NEW LIBRARY MANAGER APPOINTED The City of Mount Gambier is pleased to introduce new library manager Georgina Davison. With 26 years’ experience in public libraries in Queensland and the Northern Territory, Georgina is looking forward to getting to know the local community and leading the team renowned for delivering high quality library services. Georgina and her family, husband Wayne, 14 year old daughter Liza and 12 year old son Flynn, relocated to Mount Gambier from the Northern Territory eight weeks ago where Georgina had been Alice Springs Children’s and Youth Services Librarian and Library Manager for almost a decade. “When I accepted the position in Mount Gambier, I had just completed a major restructure and the library was running as I wanted it to. It felt like the right time for a change, as we had just won digital excellence awards just before I left,” Mrs Davison said. The Mount Gambier Library inspired Georgina long before she arrived in the city, following a visit and tour of the community facility in 2012. “I had heard all about the library here, so I took an opportunity to visit and I loved it,” she said. “As soon as I got back to Alice Springs I made some changes, I brought the outside in with photography, got the shelves on wheels and had someone greeting people at the front door.” Georgina was a participant in the highly successful International Network of Emerging Library Innovators (INELI), a project of the Global Libraries initiative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which provides emerging library leaders with opportunities to connect with each other, explore new ideas and experiment with new services and learn from one another. “I’m extremely passionate about the role public libraries play within local communities and am looking forward to getting to know the community and hearing more about how the Library can best meet people’s needs, so come in and say hello.” Georgina and her family are adjusting to the change in climate in the South East of South Australia and are enjoying new activities together. “We love the outdoors including camping, bushwalking and the beach, so it’s just perfect for us around here,” she said. “We are more than happy that we’ve made the move and we are settling in well. I look forward to working with everyone in this beautiful part of the world.”
OPENING HER HEART TO OTHERS
Congenital heart disease has been part of life for Georgie Guess for as long as she can remember. Diagnosed with a VSD, ASD and leaky mitral valve at the age of five, she has now undergone open heart surgery on three occasions – the last time only 14 weeks ago as a 26 year old. That surgery saw Georgie suffer complications and she now relies on a pacemaker, adding that to her weekly blood tests and daily medication. The most recent surgery was arguably the most life changing – even setting aside her newfound reliance on a pacemaker. Her mitral valve was replaced with a mechanical valve and she also had a septal myectomy and she is now on blood thinners for life. “The surgery left me unable to children, which is devastating news for me ,” Georgie said. What this latest surgery has done, following on from the open heart surgery at age five and 18, has inspired Georgie to turn her personal challenges into a way to help others. The former Tenison Woods College student, whose family still lives in Mount Gambier, is now an ambassador for Heartkids SA & NT and is set to be a guest speaker at the
Adelaide Education Day at the Women’s & Children’s Hospital next month. “I will be discussing teen transition alongside cardiologist Dr Patrick Disney,” Georgie said. “Thousands of children and adults have their lives affected by congenital heart disease and I hope that my own experience can help others going through a difficult time.” A former MJ dancer as well, Georgie is not only pushing awareness of congenital heart disease but also on a fundraising campaign – a campaign with a difference. “I’m going to be participating in an adventure holiday television show filmed by Charity TV Productions,” she said. “There are 12 participants, including myself, who will be filmed doing adventure activities for an entire week anywhere in Australia. We won’t know what we are doing or where we are going until that particular day.” The show doubles as a fundraiser and there is a link (https:// santtvchallenge.everydayhero.com/au/ georgie-heart-kids-tv-challenge) where people can make donations, which will go to Heartkids SA/NT. “All money raised goes directly to helping children and adults living with congenital heart disease,” Georgie said. And the statistics are damning. More children under the age of 14 years old die from congenital heart disease than all other cancers combined and eight children are born per day in Australia, suffering from congenital heart disease. “It is the leading cause of death of Australian babies ,” Georgie said. There is no cure and as Georgie can attest, there is a huge financial and emotional impact on suffers and their families. “I want to raise $10,000 to support Heartkids,” Georgie said. Channel Seven will air Georgie’s TV challenge nationally later this year.

UNEXPECTED HOMECOMING FOR NARACOORTE SINGER It was an opportunity Cara Gooding could never have imagined to emerge right in the heart of where she grew
up but for the now, 21 year old, the inaugural Limestone Coast Festival of Voice Aria Awards were a chance for her
to showcase her talents back where it all began. Currently studying a Bachelor of Music in Classical Performance at Griffith University through the Queensland Conservatorium, the former Naracoorte local was one of the 20 finalists selected to head to Mount Gambier earlier this month to work with internationally renowned opera performers Michelle Buscemi, Mattia Campetti and revered vocal coach Gary Nardella. While she was not named in the top eight that went on to perform during the Festival of Voice on the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage, the experience was invaluable, as she knew it would be. “I certainly spread the word about the aria awards when I heard about them.” Cara said. “I am heading into my final year and like my fellow students, we are all looking to find our voice. This was an opportunity I didn’t think I would get this early in my career when I was still studying. Just doing the competition and having feedback from those singers from Italy is worth entering the competition. You don’t mature as a classical singer until later but to get to know people who have made a career for themselves and to be able to spend even a short amount of time with them is such a valuable learning experience.” Cara, who moved to Tenison Woods College to pursue her music once she hit secondary school, is a prodigy of much loved and respected Penola
based vocal teacher Pamela Walker. “Mum was a music teacher so she had a real influence on me,” Cara said. “I started piano lessons before I started singing but it’s singing I’ve always enjoyed. I started with Pamela Walker in Year 10. She inspired to keep going with my singing.” And Pamela Walker was the one who identified Cara as suited to opera – a more classical style of vocal performance. “I didn’t really know what opera was but I loved it as soon as I

heard it coming out of her mouth,” Cara said. “Those lessons from Pamela set me up for life.” Of course being at Tenison Woods College meant Cara was exposed to jazz and she saw firsthand how Generations in Jazz has grown and continues to grow, having performed at the iconic festival. She can see how the Limestone Coast Festival of Voice could evolve in a similar fashion. “Generations in Jazz grew from such a small beginning and it is so huge now and everyone talks about it,” Cara said. “I hope that will happen with these aria awards – it would be so exciting for the region. I’m so glad I got to be part of the first one.” And while Cara never expected to achieve success in her first serious aria competition, she knows every bit of expert advice she can garner and every experience in performance she can accumulate will all play a part in her establishing her career. “Opera is about making connections,” Cara said. “Opera is not huge in Australia whereas in Europe so many people grow up listening to it and to be able to find out about that and meet people working in Europe can only be a good thing.” The chance to meet Opera Australia’s artistic director, who was also part of the aria award judging panel, was also invaluable. “To have all those people in one spot in Mount Gambier was amazing,” she said. Cara is now focussed on completing her degree and is set to undertake a Diploma in Education as well. “I need more performance and more education,” she said. As a general rule, opera singers really find their voice when they hit 30 – Cara, herself, is still working out if she is a mezzo or a soprano. “But my aim in the end is to secure a place in an opera, whether it’s the chorus or a role – I just think it will be a wonderful experience,” she said.

GENERATIONS IN JAZZ ADDS MORE STARS TO 2018 LINE-UP Always star-studded and talentrich, the incredible guest artist list continues to grow, with one of the true legends of jazz, Patti Austin (top right), set to deliver her only Australian performance exclusively at Generations in Jazz. The US singer will be joined by the James Morrison Big Band, percussionist Nasrine Rahmani and trombonist Shannon Barnett (below) at the inaugural GIJ Opening Gala Concert on Friday, May 4. GIJ chairman, James Morrison (bottom far right) has described the new-look program as an exciting bonus for jazz fans. “For the first time in the history of Generations in Jazz, we will be opening the festival in true style with the Generations in Jazz Opening Gala Concert, and Patti will bring the house down the all-star big band playing music from her GRAMMY®-award winning album “Avant Gershwin,” said Mr Morrison. “Then on Saturday night we have two
concerts from the sensational The Cat Empire, with the second gig having a ‘mosh pit’ for all of you who want to dance.” Visitors and locals will also have the opportunity to hear the stars of tomorrow at an evening Scholarship Adjudication Concert at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre on Thursday, May 3. The concert will feature the finalists of the James Morrison Jazz Scholarship and GIJ Vocal Scholarship, with some surprise early appearances from the weekend’s biggest stars. GENERATIONS IN JAZZ TRIALS NEW CONCERT FORMAT IN 2018 Tickets are now officially on sale for Generations in Jazz (GIJ), with the nation’s largest youth jazz music weekend boasting an exciting new format designed to meet unprecedented demand from
schools and audiences. More than 5000 emerging musicians from 130 schools across Australia will be Mount Gambier-bound for the May 4-6 event, along with international festival heavyweights The Cat Empire (picturted
below bottom left) and an exciting line-up of local and international acts. With organisers bracing for the largest crowd in the event’s extensive history, the traditional Saturday night concert held in the gigantic big top has been split into two separate performances. Generations in Jazz event manager Nethanel Sutton said the back-to-back concerts would entertain student participants followed by the general public, so that everyone gets a quality jazz experience: “We already have set national records with undercover seating for 6100 people inside the big top tent, but that still isn’t big enough, so we have reviewed the concert formats to cater for the increased number of student participants but also to allow visitors and locals the opportunity to experience what is on offer,” he said. On Saturday, May 5, an early concert will run from 6.308:.30pm for school participants and will feature The Cat Empire along with guest spots from international acts including Afro-Cuban and Flamenco percussionist Nasrine Rahmani (pictured above left), from Madrid, and Cologne-based trombonist, vocalist and composer Shannon Barnett. Due to popular demand, a second concert by The Cat Empire starting at 9pm will target the general public, and the audience will be encouraged to get up and dance during the later show, in a guaranteed party atmosphere. Tickets for Friday to Sunday including weekend passes are now available for purchase online at www.
LIBRARY OUTREACH PROGRAM SETS 2018 SCHEDULE The Glenelg Libraries Library2Go Outreach Service will return to its former visiting schedule following the end of a 12 month trial program. Councillors last week decided against continuing the trial visits to Narrawong and Nelson at the March Ordinary Council Meeting, voting to instead resume the service as per the original schedule and provide three-weekly visits to the townships of Dartmoor, Digby and Merino. Library and information services manager Yvette Parker said decision followed low take up from the Narrawong and Nelson communities during the trial program. “During April 2017 to December 2017, the Library2Go Outreach Service attracted almost 200 visitors in the towns of Dartmoor, Merino or Digby, continuing to be a well utilised and worthwhile service in these remote communities,” she said. “However the same level of interest was not reflected in the Narrawong and Nelson townships,” Ms Parker reminded library members that a full suite of services would still be available via the Glenelg Libraries website. The Library2Go will cease visits to Narrawong and Nelson from May. For further information on the Library2Go Outreach Service please visit www.glenelglibraries.vic.gov.au lifestyle1.net | 23

WATERFRONT OVERHAUL SET TO TAKE SHAPE THIS MONTH The Waterfront, a major foreshore development at Port MacDonnell, will become one of the region’s major drawcards for locals and tourists alike, and after months of behind the scenes planning, residents will begin to see activity along Sea Parade, with the announcement that the contract for the works has been awarded to local contractor Gambier Earth Movers. The Waterfront Stage 1 is a jointly funded project with the State Government ($585,000) and the District Council of Grant ($585,000). District Council of Grant Mayor Richard Sage, said that when completed The Waterfront would enhance access to the jetty and surrounds and create a sense of place for the precinct. “Port MacDonnell is a major drawcard for the Limestone Coast region and attracts visitors from intrastate, interstate and internationally. Council will continue to capitalise on
our tourism assets to boost economic growth and showcase the beauty and uniqueness of this area,” Mayor Sage said. The project is an investment in the local community, providing residents and visitors a place to come and spend time as a family, enjoy the foreshore and have a new space for activities and events for the community. Demolition and construction is anticipated to start mid this month and scheduled for completion in September this year, weather permitting. People accessing the area should be aware that there will be restricted access to the jetty and immediate surrounds during this time. For more information and to view a copy of the designs for Stage 1 go to www.dcgrant.sa.gov.au/CouncilProjects Council has determined it is also an opportune time to also undertake maintenance activities on a 300m section of the existing gabion sea wall.
BENDIGO BANK GRANT EASES PAIN Thanks to receiving a grant of $2800 from Mount Gambier and District Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank recently, Boandik Lodge has been able to purchase a Nikki pump for their residential unit at Lake Terrace. The Nikki pump is an ingenious system that is able to deliver a continuous infusion of medications via the subcutaneous route, for symptom control. Most frequently used in palliative care settings and for persistent pain syndromes, it will provide relief to those who cannot take medications orally. Boandik Lodge is grateful to Bendigo Bank for this grant which will ease pain and assist palliative care for our community. SURFING CULTURE TAKES SHAPE IN HIGH SCHOOL ART CLASSES Year 10 Art and Craft students had the opportunity to work with local artist Jeremy Ievins. Jeremy came into the school and demonstrated key skills and techniques applicable to working with posca pens on different surfaces. With strong influences from the surfing culture, Jeremy provided students with knowledge of how to apply this particular media on a creative level. Students will be using this new understanding to assist in the creation of their own work on individual largescale jigsaw pieces that will reflect their self-identity.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - CAN EVERYONE JUST CALM DOWN... By ROBBIE TANSEL Like most of you, I’ve watched over the last week as the Australian cricket team ball tampering scandal has developed. I will say from the start that I’ve been a huge cricket fan for most of my life. I could quite happily sit and watch all five days of a test match, I love one dayers and I also enjoy the wham bam of twenty twenty cricket. As a proud Australian, I’m definitely a fan of our national team. Seeing the Aussies cheating by roughing up the ball certainly wasn’t something I expected to see, and like millions of people around the world left me very disappointed. Having said all that, I think people have gotten a little bit carried away. It is just a game. The media attention and outcry all the way up to our prime minister, who I don’t think should be pointing a finger at anyone, makes it clear that as a society we’re part of the problem. We’ve built these people who like bowling bits of leather, using a piece of wood to hit bits of leather and then running back and forth into superheroes. They’re just people like you and me. Unfortunately we’ve sent them the message that they’re really a big deal. I’m sorry, but at the end of the day they’re just people who play cricket. I’ve listened to people since then cry out, “What will I tell my children? How can I tell them that their heroes are cheats?” Again, let’s not get carried away people. I explained it to my son, who is already a cricket tragic by saying, “They did something that is against the rules. They shouldn’t break the rules, should they? It’s important to be fair when you play sport, isn’t it? It’s better to try your best and lose than to win by cheating, isn’t it? But after you make a mistake, you need to admit it, like they did, take your punishment, and then people need to give you a second chance to show that you’ve learnt from your mistake.” He nodded, asked if we could go and play cricket, and then walked away grumbling when I said I was too tired. If anything, this is a great opportunity to help everyone put sport into perspective. It’s a game. It’s fun. It’s entertaining. They’re people like you and me, who for some reason are given millions of dollars, which should actually be given to people who make a difference in the world, like nurses and emergency service workers, and teachers and people who go to Africa to help poor people. As far as I’m concerned the biggest problem with the whole saga is that we’ve lost the moral high ground. You know those times where we saw the Chinese female swimmers with the really big shoulders and we all
shook our heads. Or when we learnt about Lance Armstrong and we all tut tutted. Or when we heard about the Chinese government banning strippers at funerals and we sooked about it for weeks afterwards and insisted on mentioning it in five articles in a row? Just me? We can’t do that anymore. We’re Australians, and we’re responsible for these three silly buggers coming up with the worst plan to cheat ever. No one’s talked about that, by the way. Cheat your little heart out, but make sure you’re good at it. Come up with a half decent plan. For those of you who are so outraged that you’ll never watch cricket again, can I suggest you watch the American Cornhole League. I had never seen it before until last night. Here’s what it is, as far as I can tell. So there
are about a hundred knuckle dragging, mouth breathing rednecks in a big room. I think they’ve all drunk a lot of beer, or maybe whisky. Depending on whether it’s a singles match or a doubles match, a number of them grab some beanbags. By beanbags, I mean
lifestyle1.net | 25
the sort of beanbags you see junior primary children playing with in sports lessons, not the ones that people sat on in the seventies. The competitors take it in turns throwing the beanbags about ten metres onto an inclined board with a small hole about half way up, aiming to get the beanbags through the hole. Essentially it’s a sport in the lawn bowls, bocce, curling family, aimed at rednecks and hillbillies. I don’t know if I can describe the excitement, but the commentators on ESPN were certainly doing a good job. At the start of watching, I thought they were getting a bit carried away and being over the top, but by the end I was going crazy in my lounge room when the Matt and Brett Guy father and son duo took out the doubles. I’d highly recommend you have a look at Cornhole on Youtube. If you’d like to join the newly established Robbie Tansel Mount Gambier Professional Cornhole League email me at robbietansel@gmail.com
ROTARY HEADLIGHT CHECK RETURNS The long running Rotary road safety initiative providing free vehcile checks, with a focus on headlights, is on again this Thursday. The free checks are being hosted at four locations in the Limestone Coast at Mount Gambier, Millicent, Naracoorte and Bordertown. The Rotary initiative is run in conjunction with the Limestone Coast Local Government Association, the Community Road Safety Group and WIN TV. COMMUNITY HEALTH FORUM REMINDER The Mount Gambier & Districts Health Advisory Council is holding a community forum this Thursday from 6.30pm at Mount Gambier’s City Hall. Covering a wide range of topics, including volunteering, renal services, fundraising opportunities and how the HAC wants to get the community more involved is all on the agenda.
WHAT SOME OF THE KEY PLAYERS HAD TO SAY...
ANDREW LEE (Mount Gambier Mayor) “…it’s important that stakeholders and all the community have input into this…” “…significant work has already been done over the years but should it progress there is much more work to be done…” TONY PASIN (Member for Barker) “…this is about outcomes that are community driven…” “…we will have more than one shot if we are not lucky enough to get the finding this time – it’s not the only opportunity to source funding…” “...if it’s successful, happy days, and it it’s not successful, we have a shovel ready project and governments are always looking for shovel ready projects…” TROY BELL (Member for Mount Gambier) “…this is great for Mount Gambier, great for our region and great for our community…” “…if we can have a big vision, build each other up and talk positively about this I’m confident we can achieve it…” MARK MCSHANE (Mount Gambier City Council CEO) “…it’s a but like owning your own home. You have to buy it or build it and then you have to run it and it is no different in terms of operating costs for such a facility that we are talking about…”
TIME TO PUT PEN TO PAPER Twenty thousand signatures in twenty days – that’s the challenge for the Mount Gambier community, if it wants the Mount Gambier City Council to lodge an expression of interest for Federal Government funding at the end of this month to source financing for a Mount Gambier & Surrounds Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic & Recreation Centre. It has been full steam ahead since the March 21 public meeting with the original steering committee being joined by other key community stakeholders. It is now over to the community – the people of Mount Gambier. If you want the potentially $25million dollar major sporting and community hub to be council’s next major project you need to put pen to paper. “Our role is community engagement,” steering committee spokesperson Nathan Stratford said. “We have to find out if the wider Mount Gambier community wants this development.” And the clock is ticking – hence the 20 day campaign to garner 20,000 names, or more accurately 17,000 signatures, after local surgeon Barney McCusker unveiled his own personal petition that has been running out of his consulting rooms for the past four years – it is 88 pages with almost 3000 names already supporting such a project. “This is a grass roots campaign,” Mr Stratford said. “And it’s not just Mount Gambier but also the surrounding areas.” A meeting last Wednesday mobilised the initial workforce that will canvas the public and start disseminating the petitions.
DESIGN • Three or four multi purpose indoor courts • Show court with retractable seats • Indoor aquatic facility – traditionally 25m – 8-10 lanes (heating costs means 50m prohibitive) • Access for people with disabilities • Common purpose area – allied health services/gym • A creche • A kiosk • Offices & administration • Changerooms • 50m outdoor pool remains • Outdoor netball & tennis courts also on site They will be in retail outlets, Member for Barker Tony Pasin’s office, Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell’s office and sporting clubs and you can keep up to date with the campaign on its newly launched facebook page www. facebook.com/mtgsportscentre. Mount Gambier City Council also has a working party, concerning itself more with the nuts and bolts of the project but it is safe to say when you are talking multi-million dollar developments, before committing to anything and before signing away ratepayers money, the council will want to be sure, it is genuinely the wish of the community to go down this path and that is the steering committee’s primary focus – proving there is strong grass roots support. “We really need the council to understand the community needs
it and feels it is long overdue,” Mr Stratford said. “They need to feel confident it is not a small group of people saying they want it but that they have full knowledge that people are behind this project. We have talked about it for so long and now we need to put our signature on a piece of paper.” That quest for signatures started on April 3 and the 20 day campaign has to be adhered to, given the timeline facing council and any application for Federal funding. Above (from left) - Chris O’Callaghan, Hazel Grant, Julie Moran, Rod Sparks, Tom Kosch, Ben Hood, Scott Martin, Brad Wilson-Smith, Nathan Stratford, Peter Collins & Mark Kranz.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS • Two aspects – capital (cost of construction) & operational (running costs) • Last costing was $12million and that was 12 years ago – now sits easily at $20million-plus (Campbelltown - $26.5million; Barossa - $16.5million; Fleurieu $21million (shared between two councils)) • Cost per annum to run - $1million – could be as high as $1.6million net loss to run such a facility • Rate increases would be the most likely form of funding, outside of the grant etc which are for construction

Make a big splash and get in the game... It’s time to have your say! We want you to tell us how much you want a
Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic & Recreation Centre for Mount Gambier and Surrounds Our aim is to collect 20,000 signatures in 20 days to show how much our community wants this project to happen. There has never been a better time but we can’t do this without your help!

PORTLAND HEALTH SERVICE SUGAR BAN TAKES FULL EFFECT Portland District Health will stop selling sugary drinks from April 1. PDH has been phasing out the sale of sugary drinks over the past two years as part of a Victorianfirst initiative to set a healthy example to the community.Sugar sweetened beverages such as soft drinks and sports drinks will not be sold at PDH from April 1. Health Promotion officer and SEA Change Steering Group member, Lindy Stuchbery, said PDH was leading by example and caring for the local community. “This change is needed because we have more people who find it difficult to maintain healthy weight with 59 per cent of local people identified as overweight or obese,” Ms Stuchbery said. PDH CEO Chris Giles said the decision to remove sugary drinks helped to create a healthier workplace and leading by example to promote a healthier lifestyle. “People are still welcome to bring their own sweet drinks into PDH, we just don’t want to promote it or sell it,” she said. PDH has also placed fruit on the wards and in staff dining room for staff and visitors to enjoy. PDH is one of 13 health services from Geelong to Portland making the move to combat rising levels of obesity as part of program initiated by Western District Health Service when it became the first health service in Australia to remove sugary drinks from sale. lifestyle1.net | 27
THE CLASS OF 2018 HIT THE DANCE FLOOR
For Stand Like Stone Foundation’s Sue Charlton, there was no better way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the foundation’s signature fundraiser, Swinging With the Stars, than with a record breaking year for dollars raised. Grant Fensom’s $45,000 personal haul and a “Stars” total of $140,000 was a highpoint in a journey aimed at not only raising funds for the community foundation but to raise awareness about exactly what the foundation does and who it benefits. As it heads into its 11th year, the popular event, which was the brainchild of Sue, and Dale Cleves, has announced a new batch of local stars to trip the
light fantastic and build on the already, more than $517,000, added to the foundation’s coffers by the event. “The thought was to get some well known people to get involved and give people a laugh,” Sue said. “But I went away and thought about it and thought it had to be more serious than that.” So as the Swinging With The Stars idea was refined, it became about town personalities getting some dancing lessons and of course the first challenge was finding partners for those dancing newbies. And it was also important to debunk the Mount Gambier-centric myth about the foundation in the early days so
dancers from Penola and Beachport were part of early events – that is now even more regional with dancers from Lucindale, Naracoorte, Keith and Robe all tripping the light fantastic. “The stars are basically ambassadors for the foundation,” Sue said. That brings us to the 2018 ambassadors – Mount Gambier’s Ben Deering, who has re-opened the Centenary Tower, Cape Jaffa Wines’ Anna Hooper, Millicent footballer, accountant and business owner Steve Duldig, Penola educator Nicole Lear, fellow teacher, Grant High School’s Liam Goodfellow, real estate guru Ali Coonan, chef, barista and entrepreneur Lucy
Von Stanke and rural go-getter Laura Hawkins. Dance teacher Kim Cella is heading into her fourth consecutive year as mentor to the eight dancing novices, while Paris Ackland, who has been partnering the stars in recent years, will assist with choreography. “I’m really looking forward to the challenge of choreographing the routines and assisting the Stars to learn the genres,” Paris said. “It is a privilege to be part of Swinging with the Stars for so many years and it’s rewarding to be given the opportunity to develop my skills as a choreographer and take it to the next level.”
The stars have already completed one lesson, where the foxtrot was on the agenda, as the enormity of the challenge, more so for some than others, sets in. Tickets will be available from Chapman’s Newsagency, Mount Gambier, from May 7, and given the 2017 event sold out in three days, the challenge is on to claim your place at The Barn on June 23. ICE EDUCATION FORUM FOR FAMILIES Families concerned about the impact of ice and other drugs will get the facts about the problem with a free education session in Portland on April 12. The BreakThrough: ICE Education for Families session will cover key issues about ice, its effects on the brain and body, the relationship between drug use and mental health, strategies for dealing with the ice user and access to support and resources. This joint initiative between Turning Point, Self Help Addiction Resource Centre (SHARC) and the Bouverie Centre has delivered more than 150 workshops state-wide since the program began in late 2015 and is being presented locally in partnership with Portland district
Health. Turning Point director Professor Dan Lubman said the program aimed to reduce the harms associated with ice use. “This program aims to provide an insight into what ice is, how it affects people and how to support family members into treatment,” Professor Lubman said. “It also provides people with practical approaches in caring for themselves and other family members.” Family members who attend the BreakThrough program regularly report that it gives them encouragement, increasing their confidence in dealing with difficult family dynamics caused by having an ice user in the family. Health professionals, particularly those from outside of the drug and alcohol sector, lifestyle1.net | 28
find it a valuable learning opportunity to gain a better understanding of the family perspective. PDH Director Primary and Aged Care, Fiona Heenan, said the education sessions could help people to recognise potential problems earlier. “This is a new approach in dealing with the issues and presenting people with facts,” Ms Heenan said. “It’s about knowing what help is out there, demystifying issues around taking drugs and helping to navigate support systems.” PDH drug and alcohol staff will attend the sessions. Ms Heenan said that ice was a problem in the community but alcohol affects more people and there are also problems with prescription medication
The program creates awareness by providing facts and figures that help to de-sensationalise and reduce fear around ice use, without trivializing the challenges faced by families. It also helps to reduce stigma which can lead to better management in the community. To register for BreakThrough: ICE Education for Families, to be held at Portland Business Hub, 33 Percy St., Portland on Thursday April 12 from 3-6pm, go to: https:// www.breakthroughforfamilies.com/ attend and select the ‘Portland’ option, or call the Family Drug Helpline on: 1300 660 068 to register. Attendance is free but registration is recommended to ensure a place.
CELEBRATING VINTAGE COONAWARRA STYLE
TIME TO STOP & SMELL THE ROSES Rose enthusiasts, aspiring gardeners and families looking for a day out are expected to converge on the popular Wagner’s Rose Nursery Open Day in April. Now in its sixth year, the day is designed to give people an opportunity to experience the unique rose nursery set in the heart of the Limestone Coast’s Kalangadoo region - to be inspired to grow roses, or simply to enjoy the food, wine and roses on offer. Planned around the Nursery’s peak flowering season, the Open Day provides visitors with the chance to see over 600 varieties of roses in full bloom and to sneak a peek at the new 2018 rose releases. A large selection of yearling and two year old rose bushes and standards will be in flower, and throughout the day owner Brian Wagner will provide tips on pruning and planting new roses. Coffee and a selection of food options will be available, along with local producers of cider and wine. Local producers Kalangadoo Organic Orchards will also be offering their apple cider and other goods for sale. A selection of potted plants and bunches of roses will be available for sale. There will be entertainment and a jumping castle for young children, and all proceeds from the day will go toward Penola Primary School. Wagner’s supplies to rose nurseries across Australia and has recently built on its strong wholesale customer base with a successful expansion into direct retail sales. Vignerons and winemakers are in the throes of vintage but as difficult as it is to host an event at this time of year – that’s exactly what four of the Coonawarra wineries do with the After Dark weekend. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the April 13 & 14 event, brings the action and, sometimes, chaos, of vintage, to the general wine loving public, and also gives hard working employees a chance to take one night off and have some fun. The festivities begin with the everpopular Vintage Stomp, hosted by DiGiorgio Family Wines, where teams will battle it out for the trophy, bragging rights and $1000 prize money that is donated to the winning team’s charity or community group of choice. “Our Vintage Stomp has been the curtain raiser for Coonawarra After Dark since the event commenced,” said Frank DiGiorgio. “It’s a lot of fun and very competitive. We love the whole atmosphere of the night and the fact that people can choose to stay on or easily move to the other Friday night events, for more food, wine and live music”.
One of those events is at Zema Estate, where Francesca Zema will again lead her team in the production of the delicious and much sought after familystyle pizzas – a tradition since the After Dark festival began. “She (Francesca) still very much runs the kitchen,” son Nick Zema said. “Vintage is quite a busy time of the year with lots and lots and lots of action but it let’s people learn a bit more about vintage and let’s everyone have a bit of fun. I think it’s a great opportunity to show people a bit of a lighter side of vintage. People can go to the grape stomp across the road, then come here for some pizza and then head to Wined It Up at Brand’s to finish off the night.” Popular musician Rhys Crimmin will again provide his blues and reggae music at the Brand’s Laira event. Once you’ve recovered from Friday’s festivities, there is the celebrations at Raidis Estate from 6pm on Saturday, April 14, as Chris Raidis fires up his iconic charcoal grill, to the soundtrack of live music and paired with Raidis Estate wines and The Cide Project’s beer and cider.
“After Dark has always been a big event for us and a good event for us,” Steve Raidis said. “There’s a lot of excitement and a good vibe around at vintage and it capture some of that vibe. We also have a lot of international workers around and that provides some nice diversity as well. It is really fun.” As for the expectation that Chris will fire up his grill each and every vintage – Steve admits it has become a tradition. “Food and wine go hand in hand so it makes sense for us to have both,” he said. “We really love the event – it is a fun event.” There is a shuttle bus from Penola for the Friday night events and a bus service from Mount Gambier for Saturday’s Raidis Estate show. Head to the individual winery websites and facebook pages for more details, while a full program of events is available at www.coonawarra.org COONAWARRA AFTER DARK – AT A GLANCE FRIDAY, APRIL 13 5PM DiGiorgio Family Wines (Stomp @ 6.30pm)

sheep property in New South It’s official - at 2pm last Wales, in 2004, but after two Wednesday at the Tatiara District and a half years in the Armidale, Council chambers, Nick McBride the Kingston properties, which was officially declared the were the lion’s share of the Member for MacKillop. And so for business, needed Mr McBride the man, who’s great grandfather, back at the helm. The return to Sir Philip McBride, was Sir Robert the South East, saw Nick’s only Menzies’ right hand man, the hiatus from political life. “I wasn’t Minister for Defence, and a key disenfranchised with the Liberal figure in the creation of the Party but was in repair mode Liberal Party Constitution, his for our business,” he said. “With own political journey is now set the drought in New South Wales to begin. Politics is basically a and the South East and soft McBride family tradition. “Through commodity process, there was no my grandparents and my father, room to move and we had to pull the banter at family Christmases the reins in as tight as possible and get togethers was often on the business. I couldn’t be centred on politics and it always distracted by anything including interested and fascinated me,” the Liberal Party, or any other Mr McBride said. Not surprisingly, volunteer organisation.” Wool he has hands on in the political prices spiked again in 2011 and sphere since he was a teenager, the business was able to move and during his time in Adelaide, back to a stronger position. “It was completing a boilermaker & my first experience of really strong welder apprenticeship at the wool prices and I thought, now I shipyards, he was already making know why we’re growing wool,” connection with key Liberal Mr McBride said. It also allowed Mr figures, including Nick Minchin McBride to return to the bowels and Jeannie Ferris. The McBrides sold mantra that he intends to take the New South Wales operation, to North Terrace and the halls of due to high production costs, to power. “Don’t see how little you concentrate on the South East can do but see how much you operation, and it soon became can do.” With his apprenticeship clear that long standing Member signed off, Mr McBride returned for MacKillop Mitch Williams home to the family farm in 1992, was set to hang up his political where he set about studying farm boots at the 2018 State election. management through TAFE. “For “So I decided to put my name the next 10 years I was a sponge into the political process,” Mr for information on livestock McBride said. on the day of the preselection ballot. “It was all about letting the members know what you have to offer, what you stand for and what you see as the issues,” Mr McBride said. Taking on six other candidates – it was a tense count, going down to the fifth preferences before he emerged the winner of Wattle Range Mayor Peter Gandolfi. Needless to say, in the end, the preselection battle was tougher than the State election. “Not in terms of workload – it was the same workload,” Mr McBride said. “But the Liberal Party preselection was a tougher battle which you can see by how close it was. The calibre of the candidates was so high.” But when it came to the March 17 State election, Mr McBride felt he had a distinct advantage, having stepped away from the farm after winning preselection and devoting his time to the campaign. “I was in the box seat after having 12 months to get to know the electorate,” he said. “I got to know who’s who in MacKillop in the business community, sporting organisations, community groups and volunteer groups and to learn what all the issues were.” That groundwork also meant he was arguably the best prepared candidate for community forums, as well. “I’m not saying all my answers were perfect but I knew the issues,” he said. Mr McBride is already aware of the challenges of being in a safe Liberal seat but at least he was one advantage over his predecessor. “I am part of a Liberal Government,” Mr McBride said. “Mitch (Williams) never got to bring in things he could have
over the past 16 years because he was in opposition.” MacKillop constituents can be assured of one thing – Nick McBride will not let this safe Liberal stronghold be taken for granted. “That’s not how I’ll operate,” he said. “I will absolutely go into bat for you.” The newly declared MP admits the past few months have all been a bit of a whirlwind and credits Member for Barker Tony Pasin with providing critical advice and support. “Now I’m going to have to learn a new skill,” he said. “Patience. The party has only just got into government and I am going to have to be patient and methodical but I am never going to let up – they are going to know about the issues for MacKillop.” Pleasing for Mr McBride, is the fact, the Liberal Party is not basking in the glow of a drought breaking election win but determined to hit the ground running. “There is definitely no complacency,” he said. “We want to make changes as quickly as possible because every month or week that passes with the issues we have been left with, sees them become our responsibility and we want to be professional, show we care, and we are doing our job.” The good news locally is, while new to parliament, the Member for MacKillop is a former mixed netball team mate and friend of Premier Steven Marshall – what weight those carefree days on the courts at Stepney ICA will hold remains to be seen. HARMONY DAY @ TENISON WOODS COLLEGE On Wednesday, March 21, Tenison Woods College was a sea of orange to welcome in Harmony Day. Students from the senior and middle school councils greeted students and parents at the entrances to the school with orange ribbons and harmony pledges. All students from Early Learning to Year 12 then gathered on the oval in a huge harmony heart to celebrate together in prayer and cheer together the diversity of Harmony Day. Throughout the day the Early Learning Centre and Junior School had a focus on Harmony activities with lunch time being the main focus for students in all year levels. Students were able to involve themselves in activities from a variety of cultures such as a soccer shoot out, henna and face painting, and braiding. There was also a scrumptious range of cultural foods on offer for purchase and all this was accompanied by music and lively commentary. The day concluded with a delightful harmony dinner where staff, students and their families came together to try food from a range of different cultures in a friendly atmosphere. Harmony Day is a time to celebrate the diversity of our community and the great contributions our migrant families make to extending our cultural understanding.

SPONSORSHIP COUP FOR BASEBALL CLUB Like all sporting clubs, Central Baseball Club, in Mount Gambier is acutely aware of the rising costs for parents of having their children participate in sport. Insurance, uniforms and club fees all mount up and thanks to the generous sponsorship of Chemist King, the club has been able to give back to its youngest players. The Under 13 players for the 2017/18 season all received training tops and that program will remain in place for the next two seasons, with Chemist King well and truly on board. “We really appreciate their fantastic support,” Central baseball Club sponsorship manager Dean Cutting said. “We had both happy kids and parents, as it’s not often they get something for nothing.” The generous donation meant all the players looked the same for training and to cap off a wonderful season, both Under 13 teams won their respective premierships.
