COVER - IT’S ALL ABOUT FAMILY AT FASTA PASTA MOUNT GAMBIER own pasta option, along with the usual favourites including spaghetti bolognese, penne cheese and pizza, with a small drink and gelato complimentary with every kids meal. A new menu is also on the horizon and the opportunity to promote the new additions is something to which both Jess and Ryan are looking forward. “We’ve had so much support from Fasta Pasta head office,” Jess said. “They were really keen for a young couple with a lot of energy to come in and run the place.” Ryan is no stranger to hard work and is already enjoying the challenge of both learning the ropes of the business, as well as adding a new skill Jess Roulstone has worked at Fasta Pasta Mount Gambier since she was 14 years old. She worked her way through the ranks, waitressing and learning about the business from the inside out, to eventually be hands on with the day to day running of the popular family restaurant. Now Jess, and husband Ryan, have taken over the Mount Gambier franchise and are excited by the challenge of running their own business. “We had always wanted to work together,” Jess said. “We think it will be really good for our family life.” The couple has three children – Luca (9), Kobe (7) and Evie (1) – and choosing a family restaurant was no coincidence. “We really want the restaurant to be
about families,” Ryan said. A fitter and turner by trade, Ryan will be helping run the business side of the operation but is also already hands on at the coalface, learning to cook in the Fasta Pasta kitchen. “We really want to work hard towards something that is ours,” Jess said. The couple has big ideas for the Commercial Street West location, including incorporating an indooroutdoor area but that is certainly a longer term vision. For now they are finding their feet – a task made easier by the eight weeks of training they have both undergone courtesy of Fasta Pasta. They also have a news kids menu on offer, with a new make your

Robe’s Home Brew and Craft Beer Festival is now only a fortnight away. The popular festival kicks off October 27, with three days dedicated to the craft of home brewing. The festival which is now in its third year has grown into one of this seaside towns signature events. Building on the success of last year, festival organiser Peta Baverstock saidthe committee had really gone all out this year to ensure festival goers get a taste of the local region. “The main event is the home brew with lots of would-be brewers vying for the win,” she said. “Last year we had a great turnout both at the festival and with home brew entries and we are hoping this year will be no different. We have plenty organised on the day, with a number of interesting demonstrations planned, including great brewing techniques, gourmet food from
Royal Pearl
some of the best in the local area and of course plenty of great brews from some of the best craft brewers both here in South Australia and across the border. The festival will also have cider, mead and wine for those not in the mood for a beer. Last year’s best beer of show winner Dean Ludwig will also be debuting his Luddy’s APA, his festival winning brew, for festival goers to try. The South East local said it was great to work with festival partner Robe Town Brewery and brewer Maris Biezaitis. “He is making some really interesting beers with some interesting local additions,” said Dean. “I have been making home brew since 1983 with kit beers and after my son and I attended a TAFE beer making course in Naracoorte in 2011 run by Simon Fennell I had a revelation. He introduced us to full mash brewing using malted barley instead of extract and we haven’t looked back.”Dean’s beer will be on show at the festival along with beers from Odyssey Brewing Co, Cape Brew Co, Robe Town Brewery and The Cide Project just to name a few. “There will be so much choice this year that some festival goers might feel a little overwhelmed by which brew to taste first,” said organiser Ms Baverstock. “We have our ‘Hop Around the Garden” beer tasting back this year which lets people taste the craft brews and Dean’s 2016 winning brew for $2 each before settling on a full brew. The idea is have your tasting tray and walk around checking out the brews.” Festival goers will get a form which outlines the different brews on sale and they will be able to check off the ones they’ve tried. “It was really popular last year, this year the trays and cups will be available from the one place and festival goers will be able to come have a chat with committee members before hopping around the festival,” she said. Gates open at 10.30am, with live music all day in the Beer Garden from solo acoustic guitarist Quentin Ashfield to local legends The Distractors, who will then both go on and play at festival sponsor the Robe Hotel that night. All home brew entries are due Friday, October 20, for more information check out robe.com.au or connect with the festival on social media platforms Facebook and Instagram @robebeerfest. “

BOOK PROGRAM GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH Improving children’s literacy in the Glenelg Shire has just become a little easier this week when ALDI Portland donated children’s books for the Little Book Box project. The books were donated as part of a recent pledge to support initiatives that make a tangible contribution to the local community ALDI said that they are thrilled to build literacy in the Portland area through the donation. The Little Book Box project is a community-wide and multi-dimensional response to reducing the high rate of local children who are entering formalised education with low literacy skills and low or no exposure to books or reading. United Way Glenelg Executive Officer, Nicole Angelino said the boxes are filled with FREE children’s books and placed in public venues where families congregate all over the Glenelg Shire. “Families are encouraged to “take a book, read a book and share a book,” she said. “This is enabling children to read books wherever they go in the community.” If your business would like to host a Little Book Box please contact South West Tafe VCAL on (03)5521 0465.

NEW LOOK SPRING SHOW FOR BYADUK Think you can make a cracker chocolate cake that will have the judges talking? The new chocolate challenge in the upcoming 111th Byaduk Spring Show, to be held on Saturday, November 4, is one of a few tweaks to the usual spring show program. The Byaduk Spring Show committee is looking to take the show to a new level with a modernised schedule, and committee member Jo Moore said organisers are very excited about the new format. The Dodge Brothers Club of Australasia is also a new attraction for this year’s event. The club is running their National Rally, displaying around 50 of their vintage cars, spanning from 1914 to 1938, and a stunnigng floral display from Jo Levy from For the Love of Flora is also set to be a highlight of the 2017 Byaduk Spring Show. All cooks, young and old, need to cook up their favourite chocolate cake recipe and be part of the new competition. There is an Open Section, with Champion Uniced Chocolate Cake

for $100 in prize money, and Decorated Cake, with a Floral Theme, also for $100. The Junior Section, for aged 15 years and under, will also have the opportunity to have a crack in the great bake off with the Champion Uniced Chocolate Cake having $50 in prize money and the Decorated Cake, Floral Theme also having $50 for first place. Further details
are available on the schedule. The show still has its popular categories for Cut Flowers, Roses, Floral Art and Homecrafts, along with Photography. The inclusion of the The Dodge Brothers Club of Australasia Inc, which was founded in 2007, holding a national rally every two years, is sure to attract a new crowd to the show. The aim of the club is to encourage the restoration, preservation and use of all Dodge Brothers and Graham Brothers vehicles built from 1914 to 1938. After 1938 the word “Brothers” finally disappeared from the badge and the vehicles, and became known as the ‘Dodge’ as part of the Chrysler group of vehicles. Show organisers are thrilled that Byaduk is on their tour this year, and their cars will be on display from 2pm. The new timing of the show has the doors opening at 11am, with stalls selling from that time, along with the official opening at 12noon, by a representative from Mulleraterong. This year the show is raising money for the Mulleraterong Centre and a Byaduk Community Project. The Mulleraterong Centre has a hydrotherapy pool which is used by many members of our local community, including WDHS Rehabilitation clients, Mulleraterong Centre clients, Special Development School clients and the wider community when recovering from various surgery requiring hydrotherapy. “We are delighted to be able to have the opportunity to raise funds to enable them to modernise and beautify the surrounding area of the hydrotherapy pool,” Jo said. “A very exciting project on their wishlist that is not covered by other funding and grants.” Registrations for show entries closes at 12noon on Friday, November 3, and all entries are to be placed in the hall between 4–9pm Friday, November 3, ready for judging at 9am on Saturday morning. This is a new format to enable the show to be open earlier on the Saturday morning. For registration details please email byadukspringshow2017@hotmail.com or general enquiries and stall bookings to Jo Moore 0429 787 258.

INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING BOOSTS JOBS IN PORTLAND Glenelg Shire Council has welcomed a State Government funding commitment for infrastructure upgrades to Portland’s $5 million Henty Employment Precinct. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews made the announcement at the Great South Coast Regional Partnership Assembly in Portland last week. Glenelg Shire Mayor Anita Rank welcomed the announcement, stating it was a game changer for development in the district. “This is a big win for the local economy. These upgrades will unlock a significant portion of Portland’s industrial land for private investment,” Cr Rank said. The first stage, which is due to begin soon, includes construction of road & intersection upgrades to: • Browning Street, North Portland • Henty Hwy Ring Road, North Portland • New Street, Portland • West end of Cashmore Road, North Portland

In 2015, The Distributors Mt Gambier (TDMG) celebrated its 25th anniversary and the family owned success story has gone from strength to strength since that milestone. The Morris family has been at the helm of the successful food and beverage supplier and now TDMG is not only adding another string to their bow with a move into commercial cookery and catering equipment but they have also added Sean and Yvette Holmes as business partners this year. It sees the award winning business continuing to evolve, while still providing the same quality products and service which has been the cornerstone of The

Distributors since first opening its doors. From pubs and motels to convenience stores, from cafes and restaurants to sporting clubs, from bakeries and take away outlets to hospitals, schools, independent supermarkets, caravan parks just to name a few, The Distributors Mt Gambier has been at the forefront with supplying this region with all its food and beverage needs. TDMG services the entire Limestone Coast towns from Kingston, Tintinara, Keith, and Bordertown, Edenhope, Hamilton, Warrnambool and everywhere in between. Adding the commercial cookery and catering equipment arm to the business has been a natural progression and The Distributors Mt Gambier can supply everything you could possibly need from utensils and pots, right through to an entire commercial kitchen fit out, complete with cooktop, ovens, range hoods, fridges and dishwashers. made a purchase (excluding repairs) during October went into the draw for the stunning heart shaped ring and Lisa was the lucky winner, drawn by Metro Bakery & Café owner Toni Vorenas. “It was our way of saying thank you to our loyal customer base of the past decade,” Kerry said. “You don’t control these things but it was great to see Lisa (Allen) win as she is a real battler.” Clockwise Jewellers realise the loyalty of customers is what keeps businesses afloat. “We have so many customers who just keep coming back and they also tell others and we get business that way as well,” Kerry said. Clockwise also work hand in hand with a number of sporting groups, community organisations and charities through sponsorship and donations. “We do think it’s important to give back to the community that supports you,” Kerry said. Ringing Lisa to let her know she was the winner was a real thrill. “She (Lisa) said the penny only really dropped after she had hung up,” Kerry said. “She then rang a few family and friends and couldn’t get hold of anyone to share the good news.” But Lisa has been wearing her new acquisition proudly. “It was unbelievable and so unexpected when I got the call,” Lisa said. “I keep looking at the ring and thinking oh dear!!” The 58 year old has battled her share of health issues over the year so the diamond has literally and figuratively brought a real spark to her life. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis as a 24 year old and Non-Hodgkin Lymphona when she
was 40. “That is something I am still battling,” Lisa said. “I have also had some other issues, including scarlet fever, in the past couple of years.” Ironically, Lisa went to Clockwise Jewellers with a few missions – she needed the diamond refitted in her engagement ring, needed her wedding band resized and also to buy a new watch, hers had broken. “Roger did such a great job with my rings and so it’s amazing that now I have a new ring from Clockwise as well,” Lisa said. Lisa is a Lifeline volunteer, and has been since 2013, working as part of the call centre. Clockwise Jewellers is one of the region’s premier supplier of quality handcrafted, exclusive jewellery. KELPIE CENTRE PROJECT OFFICIALLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION Member for Wannon Dan Tehan officially launched construction of the Australian Kelpie Centre in Casterton last Friday. The local MP joined Glenelg Shire staff and community members for a ceremonially sod turn at the Henty Street construction site. The $1.5 million centre will be built by local building firm Nicholson Construction in readiness for the 2018 Australian Kelpie Muster, to be held on the June long weekend. The building ,situated in the heart of the Kelpie Trail in the town’s CBD, will include a Visitor Information Centre, meeting spaces and amenities, with an interpretative display showcasing the story of the Kelpie
working dog. Mayor Cr Anita Rank said council was grateful for the Federal Government’s grant of $658,000 which ensured the project became a reality. “It was great to be able to celebrate the start of construction on this important project which will change the tourism landscape in the town with Minister Tehan,” Cr Rank said. “This Kelpie Centre design has been created after almost 12 months of consultation with the local community taking into consideration their ideas and concepts to create a state-of-theart interpretative space which meets all expectations. “Casterton’s story as the birthplace
of the Kelpie is iconic. This centre will showcase the story in a purpose built facility in a modern and accessible space which will open the door to a new visitor economy in the town. “Tourists, particularly the international market, have a great appetite for these rich pastoral heritage stories. “The new centre will assist in further building and strengthening our profile as a key destination on the Melbourne to Adelaide touring route, and connections to the Great Ocean Road and Grampians tourist regions.” The construction of the new centre, which was designed by Morton Dunn architects, is expected to create 10 local jobs and stimulate greater visitation to
the town’s retail precinct. Plans for the building can be viewed at https://yoursay.glenelg.vic.gov. au/australian-kelpiecentre-casterton
or at the Casterton Town Hall. An interpretative board can also be viewed at the construction site.

YOUR WEDDING CHECKLIST What happens after you’ve agreed to officially tie the knot… This is a special time in your life when lasting memories are made and you want them to be about planning and then enjoying a wonderful celebration of your love with family and friends. Whether it’s for 300 or 30, whether it rivals the royal wedding or whether it’s a backyard barbeque, whether you just decided to make it official one morning over breakfast or whether it was the grandest, most romantic proposal of all time, the planning still needs to meticulous. Paying attention to details in the lead up makes for a relaxing day when your wedding day finally arrives and if you have a clear picture in your mind as to what you want try and share the load with close, trusted friends and family so that you’re not too exhausted to enjoy the day when it rolls around. Be sure about what costs are involved and the most important advice is keep a paperwork trail – it can eliminate confusion about what’s been promised and just how much it’s going to cost. After you’ve said “yes”… • If the proposal came with a ring then make sure it’s insured… • If you’re picking out the ring together after set the ground rules early on budget and do your research…
budget – this might mean putting in place a savings schedule to make sure you easily cover the anticipated costs as well as hopefully having some money set aside for those unexpected costs that could crop up as the wedding draws closer… • Decide if you’re going to have an engagement party and set a date. • Planning an engagement party is a nice rehearsal for your event management skills… • Set a date – factor in what time of the year you’d like to be married, how long you’ll need to save and plan, any special events you’d like to avoid and a realistic time to be away from work and able to take time off in the lead up and aftermath for a honeymoon…
• ASAP you need to sit down together and work out an acceptable and REALISTIC
• You also need to establish just who is paying for what and what financial involvement the parents were considering so you know exactly where every cent is coming from...Get the money chat out of the way early – it can be awkward but you don’t want to be haggling in the lead up to the big day… • Map out the big picture and start locking in the crucial elements for the day… • Decide on just what kind of wedding and reception you want and how many guests you want to include… • Locking in a reception venue as early as possible is critical. Try and organise a face to face consultation with a selection
of different venues and caterers and ask plenty of questions so you know exactly what they’re offering as exactly what it’s going to cost. • Decide on a civil or religious ceremony and a venue for the ceremony and book… • Start getting paperwork together for all the legal requirements of marriage and check with your celebrant or priest just what you need to provide… • Select your wedding party TOGETHER and then approach them about being involved…
you live during the planning stages. If you have a preferred hair stylist and make-up artist for your wedding day then check out their availability as soon as possible and at least temporarily book their services…
• Start investigating photographers and/ or videographers and lock your preferred option in… • If you have a lot of guests coming from away or are planning a destination wedding, you’ll need to organise Save The Date notification and even check out potential special deals for guests at a particular accommodation facility.. • You’ll need to start deciding on dresses and suits and by association a colour scheme for the big day – while the guys will probably be easy fixed, you need to be realistic about settling on a colour and style of dress for your bridesmaids, giving you plenty of time for fittings and choice of accessories…This is even more critical if all your bridal party is not located where
Y r Local Hоeym n Specialists!
• Start contemplating honeymoon destinations, factoring in budget, time you’ll be able to get off work and a location you’ll both enjoy given the time of the year you’ll be travelling. Once again research is the key to getting the best deal…

YOUR WEDDING CHECKLIST FROM PAGE 30 Six months and counting… • With most of the big picture elements to the wedding already locked in it’s time to start sweating the finer details of the day…
• Book a florist – once again some face to face consultations with a selection of florists and looking at examples of their previous work should help with the final decision…. • Confirm your hair stylist and make up artist and book in any pre-wedding appointments like a tan, facial or
manicure as well…You also might like to check if guests from away or close friends would like to use the same stylists and make sure they’re catered for as well… In a way it’s probably the biggest (and most discussed) decision the bride makes and you have to make it NOW – the dress. Whether you’re ordering it, getting it handmade or lucky enough to find one off the rack that fits, you need to tick this job off the to-do list NOW • Plan a girls weekend when you can try on dresses and shoes and get those outfits locked in as well… Reconfirm ALL your reception details… • Select and approach an MC for the reception… • Time to book in the cars or make whatever transport arrangements you’re going to need..
• Decide on any entertainment for the reception and book it in… • If you’ve decided to have a gift registry you’ll need to select a location/s and start
compiling a wishlist… • Book your honeymoon and make sure you organise any visas or passports that might be needed… • Confirm your photographer/ videographer booking details… Tick, tock, tick tock – three months to go • Plan your vows… • If you have to or want to have prewedding counselling then now is the time… • If you’ve planned an outdoor ceremony then make sure you have an alternate venue in the case of poor weather… • Lock in the bridesmaids dresses, including shoes and accessories… • Lock in the boys’ suits, including shoes, shirts and ties…
• Make sure your mother’s on track with her outfit and your dad’s not just dusting off a suit from the 90s… • Order the rings..
• Don’t turn Bridezilla but there is only six weeks to go… • Lock in all the “extras” for your weddings – people doing readings, ushers, musician.. • File your Notice of Intended Marriage (needs to be done one month and one day before your wedding)… • Confirm all details with reception venue including guest numbers, menu, beverages and seating plan, if required… • Final fittings – that means EVERYONE… • Get your engagement ring cleaned so it’s looking its best on the big day… • Confirm all details with florist... • Confirm all details with photographer and/or videographer… • Hair and make-up trials…
• Order cake…. • Finalist the guest list and send out the invitations (and any relevant gift registry information)… • If you’re putting together any reception decoration, placecards or bomboniere yourself it’s time to start those projects… • Book wedding night accommodation and decide if you’re going to have any day after functions with family and/or friends, especially if people have travelled a long way and you’re not leaving on your honeymoon immediately…
• Make sure your home insurance will cover the arrival of the gifts… • Make sure you have everything that you need to provide for reception like placecards, centerpieces… The final countdown – last week of your single life • Wedding rehearsal… • Confirm order of service and print booklets if required... • Pick up rings… • Finalise wedding party gifts… • Confirm florist and cake delivery details… • Re-confirm any entertainment… • Pack for wedding night and honeymoon…
The bottom line is enjoy not only the day but everything in the lead up to it. It won’t be stress-free – nothing important ever is. Stick to your budget and your to-do list and planning the day can still be relatively relaxing. Allow others (that you trust) to help – you don’t have to be a one man event coordination machine.

WORTH THE WAIT It’s a tried and true formula and it is the beginning of many a great love story. “We met at the pub.” In the case of Kelsie Grubb and Nick Atwell, it was Mount Gambier’s The G and it was almost eight years ago. “He said I made him laugh,” Kelsie said. And that chance meeting saw the now traditional mating ritual of then adding someone on facebook, which is exactly what Nick did after meeting his now wife. Kelsie admits, though, she made Nick work hard before the romance really blossomed. “He was sending me
Kelsie & Nick Atwell with their parents flowers and being really romantic but it was about six months before we really started going out – I was playing hard to get,” Kelsie said. That official date is New Year’s Eve 2010 when the duo was in Robe bringing in 2011. It was fitting, their official start date as a couple happened at a seaside location – their love of the beach, with both families having coastal holiday homes, has been one of the strong connections between the two throughout the romance. “We both love fishing and swimming,” Nick said. And
while Kelsie might have played the hard to get card early, she admits she just felt there was something special about Nick. “He was different to anyone else I had even met,” she said. Surprisingly the clincher was Nick singing the Friends theme song to Kelsie one night. “We are both obsessed with Friends,” Kelsie said. “I did say to my mum very early on when Nick and I were just hanging out, that I am going to marry this guy.” Twelve months down the track Nick and Kelsie moved in together and Kelsie fondly remembers how no one in her family thought she would last. Not because they didn’t all love Nick but because Kelsie was basically best friends with her mum – a mother who basically had done everything for her, her entire life. “I did have people tell me I wouldn’t last away from mum and mum was just excited I might start doing things for myself,” Kelsie said. “But I still don’t really do anything. Nick does most of it. He is a bit OCD and my theory is even if I do it, it is not right or up to his standard. His mum said he was like it as a little kid and even folded his own clothes up back then.” So while everyone else was looking to see how Kelsie would transition into being more independent – she hit the jackpot – a guy who was obsessed with the cooking, cleaning and other household
chores. “It is wonderful but annoying sometimes,” Kelsie said. That attention to detail comes in handy for Nick at work, though, he is in stock control at the Barry Maney Group, tackling IT, accounts, pay roll and other bookwork. Kelsie is a childcare worker, so in her defence, she does do a lot of cleaning up of mess during her work day. The proposal came in June 2015 and both Kelsie and Nick admit it was romantic but not without its hiccups. “I organised a weekend away in Robe,” Nick said. “A friend of mine has a really nice house there so I took Kelsie on a surprise weekend away.” It was a surprise Kelsie wasn’t overjoyed about. “I wanted to go to Adelaide or Melbourne
or somewhere I could go shopping,” she said. Nick admits, after convincing Kelsie Robe would be great, that he made one tactical error, sending her a dozen at roses the day before they left. “I did suspect something might be up,” Kelsie said. But Nick, to his credit, played it cool. “I kept putting us in situations where it might happen but didn’t do it,” he said. Eventually the original plan was activated with the couple going out to dinner on the Saturday night, leaving Nick’s accomplices to implement their part of the proposal plan – rose petals, candles and music. In the end, it was the magical moment they both hoped for, Nick on one knee, reducing both to tears and obviously resulting in the all important, yes. “I had asked her dad but I asked Caitlin (Kelsie’s twin sister) first,” Nick said. It made for a special weekend, with the day after the proposal being Nick’s birthday. Setting the date wasn’t a huge priority. “We were in no hurry,” Kelsie said. “And Nick’s sister lives in London and she was getting married so we had that to think about as well.” In the end, it was Kelsie’s mother that came up with March 4, 2017, and so the planning began. cont. page 36
lifestyle1.net | 34
WORTH THE WAIT FROM PAGE 34 “Four is my lucky number so I was happy with that,” Kelsie said. And she hit the ground running, with a few people on her hit list to lock in for the big day. “I have been planning my wedding for ages, well before Nick proposed,” Kelsie said. Amy Agnew was the photographer of choice, with Robert Tremelling for the videography, Katie Fox for make up and the Commodore on the Park for the reception. A beach wedding was the couple’s initial thought, given their shared love of the sand and the surf, but
in the end a garden wedding seemed a safer option and they fell in love with Sheriffmuir Gardens. “A beach wedding would have been great but the weather here is too unpredictable,” Kelsie said. “The gardens were so beautiful with plenty of shade and it is easier to have a back up plan if the weather turns nasty.” Family friend Felicity Jenke was installed as celebrant and the ceremony could not have been more perfect. “Felicity (Jenke) was fantastic,” Nick said. “It made the ceremony really personal and she kept it casual which is what Kelsie and
I wanted.” The duo wrote their own vows and that made for an emotional exchange, although Nick admits the whole day was emotional. “I lost it pretty early on and I always knew I would cry when I saw Kelsie for the first time and I did,” Nick said. “That was my favourite part of the day, seeing her. It was also good to get time to just sit and have a beer with my dad.” Kelsie was amazed how calm she was on the day, although with an hour to the ceremony and her hair still to be finished, she did admit to some creeping anxiety. “Then the
driver took a very long way to get to the gardens and I was starting to stress a bit then,” she said. “She was about half an hour late but she is always late so I wasn’t worried,” Nick said. But in the end, both agree it was perfect, even to the point that is was basically as they walked inside the Commodore that the rain started to fall. The couple danced to James Arthur’s Say You Won’t Let Me Go but both agree the father-daughter dance may well have stolen the show. “My dad heard the Robbie Williams song Go Gentle, that he wrote for his daughter, on the radio and

picked it out himself,” Kelsie said. And she admits the most moving part of the day was walking down the aisle with her father to Nick. “It was all about the two most important men in my life.”

What’s your favourite part of a wedding?? My favourite part is getting a glimpse of the bride for the first time and then turning around to look at how proud her husband/partner looks standing at the end of the aisle. I also love listening to the couples vows, especially if they have written them themselves, its so special to hear. What’s the best/most unique thing you’ve ever seen done at a wedding?? It’s probably not that unique, but the best thing we did at our wedding was to have a ‘first look’ prior to the ceremony. It was so special just to have that half an hour with my husband with no one around but my photographer to capture the moment. It definitely calmed the nerves and made the ceremony much more enjoyable! What’s the one thing you’d do differently with your own wedding?? Try and be a bit more organised with little things and delegate a few more jobs to take the pressure off instead of trying to do it all myself. I found I was still organizing music and family photo combinations the morning of the wedding! What’s the best piece of advice you were given before your wedding?? Deciding on your guest list can be so stressful and I had a friend say to me years ago before I was even engaged; if you wouldn’t have them over for dinner then don’t invite them to your wedding. I never forgot it and it’s such a true statement I think! What’s the one piece of advice you would give someone before their wedding?? Take some time out at the reception just to sit back with your new husband/wife and just soak it all in. The day literally goes past in the blink of an eye and you get so caught up in what’s happening that you can forget about actually just being in the moment and enjoying it!
What’s your favourite part of a wedding?? Watching the Groom’s face when the Bride walks down the isle. It’s something money can’t buy and it’s beautiful. What’s the best/most unique thing you’ve ever seen done at a wedding?? Instead of the bouquet toss and the garter throwing, all couples are invited to the dance floor to dance and are asked to stay on the dance floor if they’ve been together / married for umpteen amount of years (ie. stay on the dance floor if you’ve been together for more than 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, etc). Slowly numbers dwindle until the longest together / longest married are on the dance floor by themselves and the Newly Weds / Bride and Groom congratulate them on umpteen years of marriage and present them with a bottle of champagne, flowers and chocolates. That’s what weddings are about, longest together (not silly bouquet toss and garter throwing!). This is what we did at our wedding. To me, that’s what weddings are about, aspiring to be together forever. The longest together / married couple at our wedding was 50 years – that’s love right there! What’s the one thing you’d do differently with your own wedding?? Nothing. I loved it all, it was a perfect day and I wish we could re-live it over and over (without the price tag of course, lol)! What’s the best piece of advice you were given before your wedding?? Enjoy the day and take time to just look around and absorb the moments. I did that a lot on our wedding day – I’ll cherish the memories always! What’s the one piece of advice you would give someone before their wedding?? DON’T STRESS – it’s a waste of energy. If things don’t go to plan it doesn’t really matter (that was my philosophy and pretty much is in life!). You’re marrying the love of your life – perspective is everything!

YOU JUST KNOW WHEN IT’S RIGHT It was in 2002 that seven year old Ashleigh Campbell returned to her birthplace Mount Gambier. Katie Wilson befriended the newly returned Ashleigh and 15 years later, Ashleigh exchanged vows with Katie’s older brother Anthony. The love story didn’t start in 2002 though. “Katie and I were just best friends who spent most weekends together like best friends do,” Ashleigh said. Katie’s family moved in 2004, though, and the duo did not really stay in touch. “We didn’t have phones and social media wasn’t as big
then,” Ashleigh said. It wasn’t until 2012 that the Wilson family re-entered Ashleigh’s life and this time it was Anthony. “He had a best friend who lived eight doors down from my mum’s house and he actually recognised me from back when I used to hang out with Katie,” Ashleigh said. She also worked at McDonald’s and Anthony appeared through the drive-thru as well. “He then added me on facebook but with the six year gap, I wasn’t too keen, I thought guys that age were just
after one thing.” Anthony kept persisting though and eventually she agreed to meet him at his best mate’s house. “He told me to bring a friend if I would feel more comfortable and I definitely did,” Ashleigh said. “It just progressed from there.” It wasn’t long before they were spending most nights together, officially starting dating in the June of that year as Ashleigh was completing Year 12. “He was really supportive,” Ashleigh said. “He would ring my mum and check I had done all my schoolwork before he would let me come over or anything.” The romance blossomed quickly and once Ashleigh had finished Year 12 she packed her bags and moved in with Anthony. His two brothers also lived with them and Ashleigh admits the relationship did hit a rocky patch, with the couple spending some time apart before reuniting. “But we did find our way back,” Ashleigh said. And once they were back on the same page, they never looked back, buying a house in July 2015 and passing the sternest relationship test – renovating together. “I am a clean freak so it was tough living in basically a building site,” Ashleigh said.
But she understood it was a project for the future, renovating one unit for them to live in, and the adjoining property to rent. That has certainly kept the couple busy but not too busy for Anthony to plan his proposal. That came in April last year at Ashleigh’s 21st. Known for his sense of humour and quick wit, Anthony’s speech, that started with laughs, soon became a more serious declaration of love and before Ashleigh knew it, he was on one knee and asking her to marry him. “He got down on one knee and got the ring
out and I was just crying,” Ashleigh said. The crying soon turned to planning, though, as Ashleigh and Anthony decided on a wedding date only 11 months from their engagement. The dress was a fait accompli in that Ashleigh knew exactly what she wanted. “I had always wanted a beaded bodice and layers and layers of tulle – the real princess dress with a long veil,” Ashleigh said. “Funnily enough the first dress I put a deposit on wasn’t like that at all. I just got caught up but knew straight away on the way home it wasn’t what I wanted. But I loved the dress I ended up with. It was just what I wanted.” Ashleigh considers her mother Carolyn Edwards, her best friend, and she quickly became the wedding planner as well. cont. page 42

YOU JUST KNOW WHEN IT’S RIGHT FROM PAGE 40 “We would have been lost without her,” Ashleigh said. She admits to one Bridezilla moment, which, in hindsight, looks like it might have been a set up. “The Sunday before the wedding I found out we only had one car for seven of us and I did have a meltdown and told Anthony to sort it out as I headed out to my shower,” Ashleigh

said. “I had no idea what had been sorted but was assured it would be fine and on the day, Jupiters Limousine turned up to pick me up. That fitted in with everything I had wanted for the day. It was really special.” Ashleigh’s other childhood wish was to do the Dirty Dancing dance, complete with lift and while back surgery precluded Anthony from doing the lift – his cousin
stepped in and while it might not have been perfect – at least it happened. “Everyone tells you how quickly the day will go but I still didn’t think it would be as quick as it was,” Ashleigh said. Having close family friend Kristy Janeway take the couple’s photos also made the day special. “I made sure she also had time to have fun with us,” Ashleigh said. “We really wanted her to take the photos as she does such a great job but we wanted her to have a drink with us as well.” The couple tied the knot on March 25 and their cat Bobby was also front and centre. “Neither of us could even get ready at the house because being a long haired cat, Bobby’s hair would have been all over everything,” Ashleigh said. “There is even a bit on our video that shows us using a lint roller to get Bobby’s hair off things on the day.” The ceremony was held at Lynette and Colin Martin’s garden – just a hop, step and a jump from where the happy couple lives. The couple honeymooned in Koh Samui and Singapore.

WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE JO GIBBS ESO - TENISON WOODS COLLEGE What’s your favourite part of a wedding?? I love everything about a wedding. If I had to choose a particular part as my favourite, I would say the ceremony, especially when the couple say their vows. What’s the best/most unique thing you’ve ever seen done at a wedding?? The most unique thing I have seen was at my niece’s wedding where she arrived on the back of a vintage truck. What’s the one thing you’d do differently with your own wedding?? I would probably make the reeption a little different - a bit more relaxed and not so traditional. What’s the best piece of advice you were given before your wedding?? Try and relax and enjoy everything about the day. Don’t take things too seriously. It goes so quickly. What’s the one piece of advice you would give someone before their wedding?? Be with the people you love the most. The day is all about you and your partner so make sure you have thing as you want them - no regrets.

LOCAL SPORT
Despite the less than ideal weather conditions, last Thursday’s Foster’s Foodland 2-4-2 still attracted 42 bowlers. The day’s winners were Bryan Roper & Colin Lomas with a very good 34+19. Runners-up were Steve Carnellor & David Botting who finished on 34+5. Rink winners were Andrea Radley, David Reichelt & Glenn Brown (33+9), Andre Reinders & Ed Fitter (33+9), Denis Clifford & Helen Murch (33+7), Terry Barnes & Wayne Ross (33+3), John Buhlmann & John Drew (32+11), John Madden & Sarah Ross (32+6), Herb Henderson & Rob Chambers (30+1) and the team of Phill Dowdell & Colin Pye finished their match in a 20+0 draw against Derek Bowering & Frank Weber. Local cricket kicks off this weekend but some of the region’s youngest stars have already had an impact with a combined South East team winning a Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy tournament held earlier this month. The South East Smash took on five other regions from across South Australia and went through the event undefeated. Players from Lucindale, Naracoorte, Millicent & Mount Gambier were coached by Glenelg District Cricket Club’s A Grade coach - Peter Muggleton. The event was a 12 & under competition.
SOUTH EAST VETERANS GOLF Fifty-five players arrived at Naracoorte’s pristine course in fine weather, and they played for the Monfries and Porter trop, named in honour of two of the South East Golf Veterans foundation members, with the main prize going to Brian Amos with 39 points, who now gets his name engraved on the splendid silver salver, as well as a fine trophy. John Monfries was on hand and enjoyed presenting prizes on behalf of the families. The First Division winner was Mick Pedlar with 38 from John Millhouse on 35 and Pat Ryan on 34. These scores reflect the trickiness of the fast greens. Brian Amos took out Second division with his 39 from Adrian Thiele 38 and Ian Telfer 37. The Ross Orchard was won by Ross Bain and Phil McInnes, and the nearest the pins were Doug Mullen, Brian Sherlock and Peter Vile, the ball rundown going down to 28 points. The next competition is at Blue Lake Gold Club on October 23. Above (from left) - Charlie Miller looks over the old Fidler & Webb ledgers, while Bare Necessities colleagues Sheryn Wilson & Sharon Tuffnell step back in time at the lingerie display. The Fidler & Webb 150th anniversary exhibition opened on Sunday and is on show at the Main Corner now.
