COVER - BLUE LAKE PRINTWORKS CELEBRATING 25 YEARS For the past 25 years, Kelvin Ruge has been behind the lens, capturing the essence of the Limestone Coast and South West Victoria. Best known for snapping the region’s natural wonders and attractions and his work from the sporting arena, Kelvin has become a fixture not just in photography circles but in printing and souvenirs. If you have played in a football or netball premiership in the past decade or two, there is every chance you have a stubby holder complete with your premiership photo, that was delivered on the night or the next day after the triumph.
And if you’ve been part of the North Gambier Football Club for the past 25 years, you probably have a raft of team photos and personal action shots courtesy of the passionate Tiger, not to mention the scores of photos in the club’s annual season summary booklet – Tiger Talk. What started as KR Computing has grown but what has remained the same is Kelvin’s willingness to always find a solution and a way to get the job done, no matter how big or small the project might be. Now known as Blue Lake Printworks, a name change that became permanent for all aspects of the business in 1996, Kelvin also moved his headquarters from his home to two other premises, each bigger than the last as his range of products and services expanded, to the more prominent Commercial Street West premises. All of those logistical changes coincided with Kelvin morphing from a focus on printing, graphic design and promotional material for business and community organisations to expanding into souvenirs, photo and print mounting and a raft of reproduction options, including on t-shirts and mugs.
It has been a tough road for Kelvin, who lost his wife to illness in 1990, after caring for her for a number of years, leaving him the sole parent of three young children. And so the former sheet metal worker, who upskilled himself during his time as a carer, in the area of information technology and desktop publishing, opted for a more family friendly career, starting from home in 1992. As the publishing and printing side of the business grew and it began to take over more and more space at his home, so, too did his realisation he would need even more strings to his bow, and in 1993, the souvenirs became part of the operation, in conjunction with another local business. Kelvin eventually took over the aspect of the business as well, as postcard and fridge magnet production, as well as printing on a number of other in house products, became a larger and larger part of the Blue Lake Printworks story. As the years have passed and technology has evolved at an ever increasing rate, Kelvin has strived to stay at the cutting edge of what is possible and Kelvin offers printing services on the latest printers and laminators, as well as business cards, brochures and docket books. He can even heat press your image onto a metal print. Since embarking on the souvenir side of the business, Kelvin has also supplied wholesale to outlets with locally themed souvenirs, including tourist imformation centres and tourist

COMING EVENTS attractions. Blue Lake Printworks also stocks a wide range of local and Australian made souvenirs. Originally from Nhill, photography has always been a part of Kelvin’s life and he is a two time winner of the Alexandrina Art Society Acquisitive Art Prize and also a dual winner of Otway Tourism Great Ocean Road Competition. Kelvin has captured the most stunning nature images from Ballarat, the Grampians and Wimmera, the Great Ocean Road and right across the Limestone Coast, as well as Adelaide, the Riverland, the Mid North and Flinders Ranges, with an award winning shot of Mackenzie Falls still one of his favourite shots. Kelvin has been acknowledged by peak tourism and business groups over the years for his contribution to both the commercial landscape and the promotion of this region. Coming from a small town it is hard to think outside of the box in terms of careers so I find forums like this will only broaden my knowledge of possible careers. And like the other two girls, it was in high school that her love affair with science began. “I developed my love for science when I reached high school as before then I was not really
exposed to it, Lucy said. “I have also attended a number of university trips which have shown me the amazing facilities they have to offer, which really made me think about a career in science. And, of course, a passion for a subject so often evolves from the privilege of having an inspirational teacher. “The main teacher that has influenced me is my biology teacher Mr. Agnew, Lucy said. “He is quite involved in National Youth Science Forum and is the one who got me to apply for it, plus he teaches my favourite subject. And biology is certainly the science field that currently most appeal to Lucy. “The way our body protects us against disease and how the world functions in terms of our ecosystems really fascinates me, she said. So not surprisingly, Lucy

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - IRRESPONSIBLE PARENTS... By ROBBIE TANSEL
TAKING BOOK WEEK TO THE NEXT LEVEL
I’ve come to the conclusion recently that my parents are not good parents. Many of you who’ve read my descriptions of my childhood in these pages may have come to this conclusion years ago. After all, at least one of my parents was in jail at all points of my youth, including on a couple of occasions when they were both in jail at the same time. This eventually led to a family meeting at the dinner table where Dad told Mum she’d need to find a new getaway driver. Don’t get me wrong. I still love my parents. I’m just questioning their abilities as parents. A couple of things have brought about this conclusion. My parents used to do things for me. When Mum wasn’t incarcerated she would wash my clothes. She cooked delicious treats that I could nibble on after school. She made my bed. She did all sorts of things for me. Likewise, when Dad wasn’t in the grey bar motel, he would take us on holidays. He would make sure the lawns were nicely mown so we could play cricket in the backyard. He would give me my weekly pocket money. But now they don’t do any of that. Don’t these people realise that parenting is a lifelong commitment. It doesn’t just stop because I passed the age of thirty-five. When you have a kid, it’s not like a shiny new toy that you can just throw away when you get bored with it. I hope lots of you are already looking for whatever hotline you call when you find out that a child is being neglected by its parents. I think it would be quite appropriate for some government agency to find new parents who can adequately meet my needs. As if that’s not bad enough, they’re currently on what has become an annual lengthy Queensland holiday. You guessed it. They haven’t taken me with them once. Each year, for the last three or four years since they retired, they’ve packed up their caravan and disappeared into the sunset, leaving me to fend for myself. I know what you’re thinking. How selfish of them. I know. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to breed, should they? I hope they don’t ever do it again. Do they have any idea how inconvenient it is for me having them thousands of kilometres away? When I want to take Donna to the movies, who can I get to look after Shaquille? In fact when I’ve just had enough of Shaquille and need some peace and quiet, who can I get to look after Shaquille? I guess if I was like them,
Book Week might be done and dusted for another year but at Heywood Kindergarten, it is a case of every day is going to be book day. Purchased thanks to a donation from the Heywood Lions Club, the kindergarten now has a Reading Chair in a bid to have a real focus on reading. Heywood Kindergarten teaching director Corrina Bell said the new reading chair was a very special addition to the learning space. “Books are an important part of our educational program, they can teach us so many things,” Ms Bell said. “Books are like friends and we need to look after them. We will now begin Special Book Day, where we invite one child every day to bring in their
ie an irresponsible parent, I could just pack up my caravan and disappear to Queensland for a few months and just leave him to fend for himself. I’m a good parent though. Possibly the most frustrating part of them being away is that they insist on sending me pictures of different places that they are camping. It’s bad enough that they’ve gone on holiday without their favourite son and now they’re going to rub it in by sending me photo after photo of sunsets at beachside bars. “Oh look at the natural spring we’re camping beside tonight.”
“Here’s a picture of the thermometer that says it’s 32 degrees in Cairns today.” “Here we are having tea on the wharf tonight.” It’s pretty disheartening as I tell them things like, “I worked today, had tea and went to bed.” Or, “I worked today, got yelled at by a client, ate tea and went to bed.” Or, “I worked today, received one of your frustrating photos of how good your life is and sat in a corner and cried.” If I’m ever selfish like them, promise me you’ll email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

favourite book from home for us to read in our very special chair,” she said. The newly installed chair had a special guest during Book Week - Melbournebased children’s author Alison Reynolds. The Heywood Kindergarten was thrilled to have Reynolds sit in their new Reading Chair,” Ms Bell said. The full time children’s author read two of her books - A Year with Marmalade and The Littlest Bushranger. The children then acted out The Littlest Bushranger together as a class, the story about Jack, who is left at home with his dog, Hector while his sister starts off for school, when an oddly bird-shaped outlaw suddenly descends on them. Reynolds has published more than 60 books locally and internationally, including her latest series Pickle & Bree and her best-selling series A Year with Marmalade. After various jobs working as a public servant, market researcher, in restaurants and bookshops, Reynolds discovered writing was her true passion. The popular author signed copies of the books she read to the kindergarten children and left them as a gift for others to enjoy. MAKING TECHNOLOGY WORK FOR YOU There is no denying technology is an integral part of all of our lives and the business community is no exception. It can be daunting but new technologies
can have a real impact on the development of your business and it ongoing viability and success and South Australian Minister for Innovation Kyam
Maher will headline a free forum this Friday to start to unlock some of those technology secrets and opportunities. A follow up event at the Mount Gambier Library on Saturday will also focus on innovation and technology. The City of Mount Gambier hosted event on the King’s Floor in the Main Corner, will run from 3-6pm and City of Mount Gambier tourism and economic development manager Donna Fosters said the event would cover developing technologies including virtual reality, drones and video conferencing. “This relaxed even will highlight the importance of connectivity and the impacts and opportunities that existing and developing technologies offer local businesses,” Ms Foster said. “The latest technology has the potential to change the way we do business, whether it’s the use of virtual reality, headsets, 3D virtual tours, new business applications or drones. The show is an opportunity for people to be exposed to new ideas and leading technology with assistance from experts in the field.” National broadband network representatives will be on hand to discuss the emerging network, as will local internet providers to work through business plan options. Polaris Business and Innovation Centre digital business advisor Rhys Moult will also be providing digital health checks for businesses. The event is being supported by a raft of local businesses and organisations including Green Triangle Electronics, TDRS, Synet, Genesis, Ockert Le Roux, Harvey
Norman, Di-Monty Training Solutions, Exchange Printers, Ausindustry, Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce, Women In Business, Telstra, Optus and Activ8me. The City of Mount Gambier Tech Show – Into The Future will also provide drinks and nibbles. “It is a great chance for people to engage in a discussion to gain confidence and a better understanding of what steps they made need to take to further strengthen their business in the digital space,” Ms Foster said. Businesses also have the chance tin win an iPad donated by Green Triangle Electronics or a Ubiquiti Amplifi Home Wireless System, donated by TDRS. More information and a chance to try some of these new technologies is on offer on Saturday from 10am-1pm at the Library’s Innovation Lab. It is the second time the Mount Gambier Library has
run an Innovation Lab and is open to everyone, not just the business community. “It is a chance to find out what all the hype is with drones and 360 degree cameras,” City of Mount Gambier library programming officer Jessica Tucker said. “Experience flying through space using virtual reality headsets and a chance how easy it is to create a 3D object and turn it into a key ring with the magic of 3D scanning.” There will be interactive audio tours of the library and assistance with utilising the library’s eResources, eMagazines, eBooks and eAudio books. “We get so many people coming into our library for the first time wanting to know its history,” Ms Tucker said. “The virtual tour guide will walk you around the library and point out interesting facts and figures about the library and the area.” Leading experts across the technologies on display will be on hand, with the event having support from Green Triangle Electronics, Marcus Jones Photography & Videoing, Ockert Le Roux Photography, Hurst Camera House, TDRS, Harvey Norman and St Martins Lutheran College. “This is a great opportunity for people to gain confidence and better understanding of today’s technology,” Ms Tucker said. Head to the library’s facebook page for more information.

THE STORIES BEHIND 2.5 MILLION KMS OF ENGINE PROTECTION
CASTROL RX SUPER... PROTECTING A FAMILY BUSINESS FOR GENERATIONS J.O. BERKEFELD Mt Gambier, South Australia
Berkefeld’s family business has serviced the Limestone Coast in South Australia for over 80 years. Four generations on, the Berkefelds supply Castrol lubricants to a diverse range of industries and businesses. To become solely a Castrol reseller was an easy decision for the family to make. The high price of equipment and machinery meant their customers wanted the best quality product available to protect their investment.
“ We’ve been selling Castrol RX Super for 35 years. When my customers service their truck or tractor, they can tell the difference when they use Castrol RX Super. Simply, quality is a lot easier to sell. My customers depend on their machinery to support their staff and their families. Castrol RX Super protects their business.” Kym Berkefeld – 3rd generation
For over 35 years Castrol RX Super has been protecting the livelihoods of Australians. Visit castrol.com/RXSuperproof for more Castrol RX Super stories. The perfect exhibition for young and old is currently on show at the Hamilton Gallery. Advertorial • SFM Asset Management
TAKING CARE OF ALL YOUR FORESTRY MANAGEMENT NEEDS SFM Asset Management (SFM) may only be a small team in the Mount Gambier office, but they have plenty on their plate. A relative newcomer to the Green Triangle timber industry compared to other players in the same space, SFM is looking to gain a foothold and lift its profile. Currently, SFM manage around 32,600 hectares of land throughout the region, equating to a net plantable area of almost 26,000 hectares, and not only boast two major corporate clients but also offer consultancy, harvesting, and marketing services tailored to smaller private growers. With an established network of trusted contacts in both the domestic and export arena, SFM are well positioned to help private growers maximise the return on their forestry investment. The Mount Gambier team also manages 2,400 hectares in Western Australia, further expanding its footprint in the Australian forestry sector. SFM, originating out of Hobart, has been operating in the forest industry since 2001. It was in 2011 that SFM established a presence in the Green Triangle region, starting with the management of a 1,800 hectare blue gum estate before progressively growing to what it is today. A similar transition has happened with the team, morphing from the occasional visit by a Hobart based representative to the four-person team that has just moved into the Old Convent at 20 Penola Road, Mount Gambier. Regional Manager Mike Lawson, who has been managing Australian forests
since 1999 when he relocated from New Zealand to Australia, heads SFM. His role in the SFM team sees him managing the business unit and overseeing the administration and execution of the various service agreements. Mike has a strong background in forest management and has completed tertiary qualifications in both Forestry and Business, an area that is now the focus of his Masters Degree. He is no stranger to this region, having worked in the Green Triangle forest industry since 2012, and if you supported the local rugby 9s competition in its early days, Mike will be a familiar face. Mike is playing the role of a marketing manager at the moment as well as he looks to establish SFM in this region and build its reputation. “It is about getting a foothold and, from there, growing the business. I am always trying to find opportunities for us to expand.” The relocation of the office to Mount Gambier also became a logical step in the business’s evolution. “There were three people commuting from Mount Gambier, the bulk of our operational program has also shifted geographically, so it just made sense”. Mike might be the Regional Manager but Regional Forester Noel Bull is the unofficial team leader as the longest serving SFM employee in the team and a veteran of the forestry game in this region. “Noel has a fantastic understanding of operational forestry, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him on board,” Mike said. What Noel doesn’t
know about forestry in the Green Triangle is arguably not worth knowing. Courtney Pink, also a Regional Forester, is a new face to the team working alongside Noel applying her tertiary Forest Science qualifications to tackle the more technical aspects of forestry. “Courtney and Noel’s primary role is making sure we grow trees and that we grow them successfully,” Mike said, “essentially executing the strategic plan through sound operational planning and application of those plans in practice.” Mike states, “Courtney and Noel are an incredibly productive duo. The combination of Noels experience and Courtney’s exuberance, underpinned by a natural ‘Gen-Y’ tendency to question the norm, is a powerful combination.” Resource Manager Joel Turner is also an important cog, with a broad range of experience in the industry backed by tertiary qualifications in forestry and environmental science. Joel commenced with SFM at the beginning of 2017 as an already accomplished and experienced forester, but the growth of the company was such that he soon found himself promoted to management and taking on a raft of new challenges. Much of Joel’s time is now dedicated to the technical aspects of forestry, including forest modelling, systems management and strategic planning. “Despite being a relatively young company we have strong systems in place and have received positive feedback from our clients on our performance. Mike Lawson, Joel Turner, Noel Bull & Courtney Pink the driver behind picking up additional management contracts.” It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, with the Water Allocation Plan causing issues in South Australia, forcing the four-person team to think outside of the square in some of its affected properties. But with that challenge, new ideas have emerged. “We are exploring some agricultural options for ex-forest land in South Australia,” Mike said. SFM Asset Management is also moving into softwood management with a 4,000 hectare establishment program commencing in 2018. “That is a real bonus for the industry being able to retain that land under trees,” he said. It is also an opportunity for SFM’s clients to see them in a different light and not just as hardwood managers. “We would be one of very few independent forest managers with multiple portfolios, growing multiple species,” Mike said. And speaking of burgeoning ideas, SFM is also front and centre of Hydrowood,
a lumber revolution that is one of the more remarkable stories in the industry and was featured in the last season of Channel Nine’s renovation juggernaut, The Block. The Brainchild of innovative company Directors Andrew Morgan and David Wise, Hydrowood is a premium product, highly sought after by artisan craftsmen for projects ranging from cutlery handles to custom made furniture. A result of the Hydroelectric schemes, under the surface of Tasmania’s Lake Pieman is a flooded forest, providing a hidden supply of some of Tasmania’s most sought after quality timbers. SFM offers management of commercial-scale and private forestry plantation estates, including harvesting and logistics solutions, market options and independent advice to a wide range of forest-based projects. FORD DEALERS HAND OVER CAR TO NEW FOOTY BOSS The newly appointed SANFL South East football operations coordinator Tony McNamara might have only been in the job barely a week but he already has the unequivocal support of the region’s Ford dealerships, driving to Millicent, his new home, last week, in a donated Ford Escape Trend. Entrusted to take charge of football across the Western Border, Mid South East and Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara football leagues and work cooperatively with the huge volunteer base currently administering the game, McNamara has hit the ground running and the sponsored vehicle will be invaluable as he makes his way around the region meeting league and club executives and getting a feel for the lay of the land. “I will look after game day operations for all three leagues,” McNamara said. “The idea behind that is take some of the pressure off volunteers around the leagues. They are a huge part of what goes on week from week.” McNamara has already met with all three leagues, including attending the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football League medal count last Wednesday,
and is determined to start club hopping as soon as possible to start gathering intel. “It’s important to get out seeing as I am the new guy around the area,” he said. “I want people to know what my face looks like and know who they are talking to.” And Barry Maney Ford, South East Motor Company, Mac Ford and Wise Ford, who are already individually invested in their local clubs and leagues, were happy to support the inaugural regionally based football operations coordinator, a role that will be rolled out across South Australia. “It’s all about supporting grassroots football,” Barry Maney Group director Barry Stafford said. “Football and netball are the lifeblood of our communities.” The newly established position focuses on the future of the game and how to move forward with a shrinking volunteer base and support those who still put their hands up to keep clubs running. “The volunteer base is dwindling and diminishing and it is really important to support them or there will come a time where there won’t be
anyone,” McNamara said. A proud local supporter, Stafford was optimistic about the impact the new SANFL instigated role will have in the region. “We have seen it work in other States around the country,” Stafford said.
And the man in the role is also upbeat about how his position can impact football in this region. “We are picking the best bits of what models are out there to bring into this area,” McNamara said.

GIVING BACK TO A NEW GENERATION OF PERFORMERS Former Mount Gambier performer Ayesha Susic was in Mount Gambier last week, returning to the Limestone Coast Showcase – a vocal and choral competition she has previously supported as a competitor, but this time round she was an adjudicator. And while it might have been her first time in the judge’s seat, a role she shared with Anne Credlin, she brought years of performance experience to the role, as well as many years of mentoring and vocal coaching. It was when Ayesha was studying at university that she took her first steps into the professional realm of performance. Part of the degree was attending a mock audition. “They told us no one would actually get the job, it was about having a go and learning about the process,” Ayesha said. “But they did pick two out of the 200 that auditioned and I got one of the spots.” That started what became around a decade career for Ayesha working on cruise ships – a job currently enjoyed by former Mount Gambier dancer Matt Cram, and has also been part of the Euan Doidge story. Ayesha worked on Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Carnival cruise liners – some of the biggest names in the industry – and soon found herself as Show Captain, the person charged with running rehearsals and ensuring the vocals were right and the performances were polished. It was a life she loved. There was the intensity of 10-12 hour days during the two months of rehearsals before the ship set sail and the fun really began, performing for 20 hours a week and basically seeing the world.
“It was wonderful,” Ayesha said. “You were seeing the world, getting paid for it and there were no costs. The cultural experience was amazing.” The lifestyle was also like nothing she had experienced before, living side by side on a ship with so many people. “Living on a ship really opened my eyes,” Ayesha said. “It actually amazes me how people can live so closely together on a ship where there is no escape and all get along and we can’t all get along
in life.” That chapter of her life closed – not because she didn’t still love performing and travelling the world but because priorities changed. “I loved it but unfortunately I wanted other things like and family and that type of thing and you can’t be away for eight months of the year but it was the most amazing time,” she said. The change in direction sparked a teaching career, setting up her own practice and teaching students privately, as well as heading back to

school, so to speak, as she studied a Diploma of Management. That led to another change of focus, with Ayesha securing a role with department store giant Myer – in fact she is still working for them now, although her role has been limited due to pregnancy. It is not surprising that she really made her mark when she combined her management training with her performance expertise. Myer Melbourne had set up a Giftorium – a special area in their store on the ninth floor where they wanted to really generate excitement about shopping, especially over the Christmas period. “They created a Christmas Wonderland and wanted new and innovative ideas to bring the love of shopping to life,” Ayesha said. So Ayesha delved into her finely honed bag of performing tricks and wrote a Christmas Show with fellow Mount Gambier alumni Shannon McDonough. “I came up with the idea for the show and Shannon and I wrote it, incorporating current pop music and on trend Christmas music,” she said. “Shannon was my perfect partner in crime. We decided we could sell the concept through music and song and theatre. We were always such great friends since going to high school together and Shannon is ridiculously talented.” The concept was a huge success in its first year and became a regular fixture in store, with an Easter event also spawned. This Christmas, due to Ayesha’s pregnancy, the show is in hiatus, but with every intention to return in 2018. It took three weeks to write the show, which has been revamped every year, and then for
two and a half months it brings joy to shoppers and a financial windfall for the store. “We created a slightly different show every year and performed two to three times a day,” Ayesha said. “It helped Myer secure some really good contracts. Management loved the way the show brought shopping to life in a way that had never been done before. For some families it became a day out to come and see the show.” The girls even added characters and utilised other colleagues from the performance industry to add to what started as a two character show. SPORT AT A GLANCE
SOUTH EAST VETERANS GOLF The Blue Lake Golf Club course hosted 48 players in bleak conditions for the latest round of South East Veterans Golf, but there were a few good scores. First Division was won by John Millhouse on a countback from Phil Hunter with the day’s best score of 40 points. Wayne Dunford came third with 37 points. Second division was won by the Penola champ, Trevor Williams with 37 pts from Doug Mullen 35 and Bob O’Connor with 33. Allan Schultz won both NTP’s on the 2nd and 5th and the Ross Orchard went to Ray Thiele and Bob Johnson. The ball rundown extended to 29 points. The next outing is at Bordertown on September 11.
SEVENTY SHOOTERS HIT BURRUNGULE PARK South East Field & Game had 70 shooters nominate for Mt Gambier Rural Supplies and Glencoe Shop & Bistro 50 target Sporting Clays event at Burrungule Park. Neville Kent set the course to challenge all shooting abilities considering the new and old shooters competing in the Family Shoot run concurrently. Fresh, from a successful European shooting trip, Jamie Dunn dominated the event, by not missing a target, in what turned to be a clay shooting masterclass, and taking out the Gambier shooting supplies High Gun with 50/50. Lake Bonney shooter Danny Bellinger took out AA grade with 48/50 whilst perennial rivals Tim Widdison and Leigh Dunn could only be separated by a high quality shoot off, with Widdison prevailing on some testing targets. A grade honours were shared by visiting shooters; Graeme James (1st) and Tony Sellars (2nd) both from Lake Bonney and Kingston’s Leigh Peterson back in third. B Grade was won by Glenn Crowe-Owen from a talented young shooter from Allandale in Matt Jones. Mick Banning again on the podium in third. Doug Rhode warmed up for some international shooting in Thailand with a win over Rob Michalski in C Grade. Wayne Evans continued his blistering form with a consecutive 25 badge and a class win in Veterans over Wayne Gurney and Neville Kent. The super Veterans saw Greg Todd overcome old rivals Kevin Dyson and Barry Hill, who made a welcome return from an injury layoff. Tash Bellinger was a convincing winner
NATIONAL SUCCESS FOR LOCAL INDOOR BOWLERS A squad of 12 from the Mt Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association has recently returned from the 48th Australian Indoor Bias Bowls National Championships in Devonport. With only five medals won in the South Australian team, four local members came home with medals. Keisha Pearson went one better than last year to win the silver medal in the Girls Singles but was unlucky to take the gold by losing against the champion on the last end by two shots. Her brother Zac Pearson, with Michael Haywood, also brought home the silver medal in the Men’s Pairs, in a tight competition. The other two locals to bring home medals were Simon Attiwill and Stephen VonDuve, teaming with Shaun Mules and Peter Matan to win the bronze medal in the Men’s Fours. Out of the medal hunt
going into the last day they won and other results went with the team to put them back into the bronze medal position. RESULTS Girls Singles: Keisha Pearson 2nd 7 wins & 1 draw Men’s Pairs: Zac Pearson (plus Michael Haywood) 2nd 6 wins & 1 draw Men’s Fours: Simon Attiwill, Stephen VonDuve (plus Shaun Mules, Peter Matan) 3rd 5 wins Men’s Triples: Gary Bowering, Craig Pearson (plus Len Blakeney) 4th 4 wins & 2 draws Mixed Pairs: Fiona Pearson (plus Eric Pitt) 6th 4 wins & 2 draws Ladies Triples: Veronica Opie (plus Carole Ross, Jan Miller) 6th 4 wins Ladies Fours: Nancy Horrigan (plus Lynne Nicholson, Lynda Scarlett, Jill Thomas) 8th 4 wins Ladies Triples: Betty Allen (plus Beverly Connell, Joyce Clayton) 9th 2 wins & 1 draw Ladies Singles: Jennifer Bowering 10th 2 wins

Brodie VonStankeDowie finished on top of the podium in Sub Juniors and got bragging rights over his cousin Shakeille VonStanke. Talented newcomer Adam Kuhl rounded out the placings in third. The Second Annual Family shoot ran concurrently and attracted many new faces and some old ones as family members paired up to try to win the Kent & Wright Families sponsored event. Not surprisingly the father/son combination of Leigh and Jamie Dunn won the OTG with 97/100 whilst the Handicap team event finished as a tie between Liz, Tom and Roo Rymill and the Cameron Scheidl and Emma Lawford combination. South East shooters are competing in The Sporting Clays Australia Nationals next month in Geraldton, Western Australia and the region’s clubs wish them all the best, while congratulations also to Jeremy Kent who finished fourth Overall (3rd in AA) in the lifestyle1.net | 31

It started on a 15km course with 15 buggies and forty years on, it is one of the premier off road racing events on the Australian calendar, attracting almost 100 entries and lasting three days. The Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro 400 is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and the September 22-24 event is set to pay homage to those who started it all. “We’ll have some older, original vehicles on display, that competed in the early days,” Pines Enduro committee member and driver Daniel Lamb said. “We’ve also hope to have photos and things like that, and we have a big screen this year and we will use that to show a slide show, especially on the Friday night during scrutineering and also over the weekend whenever there is a break between drives.” The Sunday night presentation dinner at the Millicent Civic & Arts Centre will also have a nostalgic theme with guest speakers sharing their memories of events gone by. Bruce Clayson is the man behind the inaugural Pines Enduro, successfully negotiating with the Woods and Forests Department for the use of an area of the Tantanoola Forest Reserve for an Enduro run by the Millicent Sand Buggy Club and the Naracoorte Car Club.
The 15km course was soon extended to 35km once the entries started to increase and regularly hit the 60-70 mark, as 4WDs, VW Bajas and sedans joined the off road revolution, to limit the damage to the track and surrounding forest. Interestingly, the 2017 nominations, which only opened a week ago, have already hit the 70 mark, with a cap of 110. “I think the most we have had is 93 entries but who knows how close we will get to that 110 maximum this year,” Lamb said. Mount Gambier’s Peter Baron won the first two Pines Enduros, taking the title two more times in the first decade of competition in ’81 and ’84. He is still the most prolific winner of the event, sharing the honour with regular visitor David Fellowes, who also has four titles to his name. It was in 1982 that things really started to ramp up for the event with the Millicent Off Road Car Club formed to basically run the event, garnering valued local sponsorship support, and attracting drivers from across South Australia and Victoria with an increased, and enticing, prize pool. cont. opp. page PHOTOS COURTESY OF ANDREW STOTT
MOTOR PINES ENDURO CELEBRATING 40 MOTOR KIA ENSURES THE VALUE EQUATION ADDS UP
YEARS OF TAKING IT OFF ROAD
FROM OPP. PAGE There have been plenty of milestones along the way. In 1986, the Pines Enduro doubled as the South Australian Off Road Championship, and in 2003, it became part of the national championship, while staying on the State calendar as well. Machinations at national level saw another slight change in form in 2013 when the four round ARB Off Road Racing Series was inaugurated. As far as 2017 entries go, all States of Australia, with the exception of Western Australia, are already represented with plenty of time for more entries to pour in. The current leader of the Off Road Series, Dale Martin, leads an all star cast for the 2017 event, that includes plenty of local faces with the likes of Greg Gartner, two time champion Garry Turnbull and Lamb. Just as important as the local drivers supporting the event, is the ongoing commitment from the Teagle family who allow the event to be run on their property, along with the support from One Forty One Plantations and Wattle Range Council, in terms of the host locations. “And then there’s the hard work of the Millicent Sand Buggy Club members and Pines committee,” Lamb said. “The venue is looking really good and the weather forecast looks good.” Viewing at the Pines Enduro is exceptional and in 2017 patrons can take an aerial approach with helicopter rides on offer, while the kids will be thrilled to know the sandpit will return in 2017 but this time it will be open slather and not confined to the VIP area. Kia’s razor-sharp pricing for its highlyanticipated Stinger 3.3 bi-turbo sports sedan has set the market alight, but the best is yet to come. “There is a belief that any entry-level model will be, for want of a better description, sparse,” Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer, Damien Meredith, said. “That is not the case with the Stinger. The S has the same brilliant 3.3-litre bi-turbo engine as the GT, the same 8-speed gearbox with sports paddles as the GT and the same ability to sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds. And there is safety and comfort equipment in this car that you would not normally see in anything but the top of the model range, including satellite navigation. It simply represents outstanding value _ starting with the S but stretching across the range.” In common with all three grades, the S is powered by the 272kW 3.3-litre bi-turbo V6, making an impressive 510Nm and coupled to Kia’s proven in-house eight-speed automatic gearbox driving through the rear wheels. The 4.9 second 0-100km/h sprint is aided by the standard launch control function. Helping to keep the power under control is a mechanical limited slip differential and a set of Brembo brakes (350mm quad piston front and 340mm dual piston rear) designed to pull the speed off as efficiently as the bi-turbo engine pours it on. The entry-level Stinger rides on high-performance 18-inch 225/45R18 Continental ContiSport Contact 5 rubber. With safety a primary concern, the Stinger S packs a full suite of active

and passive safety, featuring anti-lock braking with emergency brakeforce distribution and brake assist, Electronic Stability Control and traction control, Vehicle Stability Management, hill assist, rear view camera with dynamic parking guidelines, rear cross traffic alert, active hood pedestrian protection, LED daylight running lights and three child restraint points (two ISOFIX). The driver enjoys 8-way adjustment for the artificial leather sports seating while the front seat passenger can adjust their seating six ways to find the optimum comfort position. The entertainment system boasts six speakers, a 7-inch touch screen control centre with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth compatibility and music streaming. At the top of the grade, the GT is packed with extra features. In addition to the rear view camera the GT adds a 360-degree camera view, Blind Spot Detection, Dynamic Bending Lights,
High Beam Assist and full-colour Heads Up Display (HUD). There are a range of external cues unique to the GT, including electrochromic door mirrors, LED headlights with auto leveling, powered sunroof and two bespoke colours - Aurora Black and Snow White Pearl. The seating becomes Nappa leather with GT logos and the addition of lumbar support, powered bolster adjuster and thigh extender. There is a two-position seat memory with easy access button and a D-cut steering wheel. The instrument cluster steps up to a 7-inch colour TFT-LCD screen, alloy sports pedals become standard and suede makes an appearance in the interior roof and pillar trims. There is also a wireless phone charging capability. The entertainment system takes a major step up with a premium 15-speaker Harman/Kardon system (eight speakers, four tweeters, centre speaker and two subwoofers powered by an external amplifier).
