COVER - NEW FACES JOIN THE MOUNT GAMBIER CHIROPRACTIC CENTRE TEAM
For more than three decades, the Mount Gambier Chiropractic Centre has been synonymous with quality health care in the Limestone Coast. Five years ago, Dr Janine Ritchie and David Thompson took over the reins of the Crouch Street North centre, opening a new chapter for the business, which is centred on gentle, effective care for the whole family. Bringing a wealth of experience and a desire to provide this community with quality care, the duo celebrates the five year anniversary of taking over the centre this month and it has seen another chapter ready to be written with two new practitioners joining the team. Dr Kara Leach and Dr Shanice Masters are now part of the Mount Gambier Chiropractic Centre and adhere to the same care philosophy – that everyone deserves to live an active, pain-free life in a strong and healthy body. Mount Gambier Chiropractic
Centre uses a range of gentle, low-force techniques to improve the function of the nervous system – the body’s control system - and their aim is to de-stress you and your body, supporting you to achieve greater health. Providing care for patients from birth to 95+ years, the Mount Gambier Chiropractic Centre team has experience assisting with a wide variety of conditions including dizziness, headaches and migraines, back, neck and pelvis pain, recovery after illness, postural issues, scoliosis, balance issues and falls prevention in elderly patients, sporting injuries and injury prevention and performance enhancement for athletes.
Dr. Janine Ritchie Principal Chiropractor Bachelor of Applied Science (Biochemistry) (Honours), Master of Chiropractic, Board eligible with the American Chiropractic Neurology Board After completing a science degree in the ‘90s, Janine worked in the food industry as a microbiologist and at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute as a research assistant in the auto-immunity and transplantation department. Eventually, she decided it was time to get back to nature as a way of healing, having received chiropractic care as a child. She believes her experience gives her an informed view on the various approaches to health. Janine loves the diversity that comes from working in a family practice – one minute it’s a cross-fitter, followed by an infant and
their grandparents. She loves the sun and the ocean, sci-fi movies (don’t tell anyone), posting on her dog’s Instagram and picking up recycled ‘bargains’ from people’s nature strips (don’t tell anyone that either!). David Thompson • Practice Manager Bachelor of Applied Science (Chemistry and Biochemistry) (Honours) David was an analytical chemist in a previous life, working in the food and wine industries around Australia for 17 years. David originally met his partner Janine (Principal Chiropractor at Mount Gambier Chiropractic) in a biochemistry prac class at university, way back when following Carlton was fun. Like Janine, David believes his exposure to the scientific and chiropractic worlds gives him an informed view on the various approaches to health.
Above - Practice manager David Thompson (left) & principal chiropractor Dr Janine Ritchie (right). ON THE COVER: Dr Shanice Masters & Dr Kara Leach.
Dr. Kara Leach • Chiropractor Bachelor of Chiropractic, Bachelor of Arts (Humanities) Texas born Dr. Kara Leach graduated from the world-renowned New Zealand College of Chiropractic with Honours, winning the Academic Excellence Award for her year. Led to chiropractic by her deep-seated desire to serve others and make a difference in her community, Dr. Kara has a special interest in chiropractic care for children, pregnancy and delivery, and for peak performance in athletes. Herself a keen amateur martial artist, she delights in watching fighters take their performance to the next level with a clear nervous system. Dr. Shanice Masters • Chiropractor Bachelor of Chiropractic Born in England, Shanice moved to New Zealand with her family at a young age. She graduated from the world-class New Zealand Chiropractic College and moved to Australia at the beginning of 2017 to experience life across the ditch. Since graduating, she has been utilising her low force technique skills in practice as well as expanding her knowledge through additional studies in chiropractic care for pregnancy and babies/children, as this is a huge passion of hers. In her spare time she enjoys travelling, dancing, sports, yoga and social events.

US ADVENTURE STARTS FOR MOUNT GAMBIER BASKETBALLER It has been a whirlwind couple of months and for Mount Gambier’s Lachie Hunter the adventure officially began at the weekend as he headed to Ohlone College in Fremont, California, to pursue both his basketball and academic dreams. Pioneers assistant coach Rohan Stevenson planted the seed of a possible US college future and Lachie decided to pursue the opportunities, rather than risk regrets and a whole lot of “what ifs.” “Going to college is not something that was on my radar and I didn’t know if it was something for me,” said the 18 year old, who, until recently, was planning a move to Adelaide for tertiary study, with basketball perhaps taking a back seat. “But then when the interest was there from colleges and I just decided to grab it so I wouldn’t regret
it later.” There were a number of options for Lachie and in the end, strong interest from former Aussie NBL star Scott Fisher’s program at Ohlone College was the best fit. It is a community college in the San Francisco Bay area and Lachie hopes if he excels at both his basketball and study, he can graduate from there and secure a scholarship place at a four year college and complete, what he hopes, will be an engineering degree. With an ATAR of 95.75, Lachie is looking to be more than a jock and is serious about his study as well as his basketball but the chance to work with Fisher, who was an icon, particularly through his time at the Perth Wildcats in Australia, was an opportunity to good to pass up. The teenager is flying a little blind into his US adventure but has a week to settle in, meet his housemates, who are all Australian and attend the same college, and finalise his study schedule and get a feel for what role the basketball program will play, ahead of an August 28 start to classes. Lachie hasn’t met any of his house mates, who will also be team mates at the Ohlone Renegades, but he has played against many of them during his journey through SA Country teams and other elite program opportunities. “They are all in the same boat as me,” Lachie said. The basketball seasons kicks off about a month after school so Lachie is
looking forward to getting into training and starting the next chapter of his basketball journey. “It is good to be applying under Scott (Fisher) because he knows the Aussie way of playing and he does use a lot of that,” he said. Basketball wasn’t always Lachie’s first love but he started playing following encouragement from his mum Lisa Hunter, while still pulling on the footy boots, a sport he also loved as a youngster. It was in Under 12s when he was asked to be part of the Lakers representative program by Ray De Wit that basketball started to work its way to pole position. “I wasn’t that good at that point but I developed a passion for it and kept going with it,” Lachie said. When he was eligible for Under 14 SA Country selection, Lachie was not selected in the team but named a reserve. “That was the best thing that ever happened for my basketball,” he said. “It drove me a bit more and that’s when it started to get more serious and I started putting in the work.” He made the Under 16 SA Country team as a bottom age player and never looked back, representing his State every year and starting to find his way onto the radar of top national coaches. “My parents have been amazing with their commitment to travelling everywhere with me and helping me follow my basketball wherever it has taken me,” Lachie said.
That has included regular trips to Adelaide, not just for training but when Lachie was playing, firstly for Forestville, and then Eastern Mavericks, in the Adelaide district competition. Playing regular in the best competition in South Australia was critical in Lachie’s development as he suited up each week against quality opposition – guys he battled with and
against in State teams among them. Then came the chance to be part of the Mount Gambier Pioneers squad – a team he had started watching when he was really young. “The training was at the next level and I was very lucky to have this opportunity,” he said. The chance to train and play against the bigger bodies, also key in developing his basketball. Access to head coach Richard Hill and the individual training he offers the young squad members was also pivotal. “I’ve been included in team trainings for two years and to also be able to work with Richard (Hill) on individual things in my game has been great,” Lachie said. “He’s really worked on my game, developed my confidence in my shot, especially my jump shot and teaching me to look for my own scoring opportunities.” And if the Pioneers experience has taught him nothing else, it is that he does need to put on more muscle and become a bigger bodied athlete and he assumed that will be a focus of his work at Ohlone College. “I have been going to the gym two or three times a week and it’s definitely a goal of mine to get bigger,” he said. Along with Hill, Matt Sutton has also been a big part of Lachie’s basketball journey. “He coached me as a junior and it was a strange feeling to start training alongside him and playing with him at the Pioneers,” Lachie said. “He’s a great leader and a great team man.” But now the Mount Gambier High School graduate is taking the next step on his own. “I’m extremely excited but very nervous – it is life changing,” Lachie said. “I’m still not completely sure what to expect.” And aside from the college experience and the development of his basketball game, the chance to get to some NBA games is high on the priority list for the Oklahoma City Thunder fan. Lachie is leaving behind a gap year role as an SSO at McDonald Park School and his swimming instructor gig at the Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre. And along with his school friends, he is also going to miss suiting up with his Bulldogs team mates each week in the local competition. “It has been great to play with people like Simon and Matt Berkefeld – they’ve been awesome for me,” Lachie said. Above all, moving so far away from his family is the tough part. “My parents have been so awesome and supported everything I have wanted to do,” Lachie said. FOOD WASTE IN THE SPOTLIGHT FOR CITY COUNCIL
To divert food waste from household rubbish bins, the City of Mount Gambier will roll out a kitchen caddy system to all green organics subscribers in the 2018/2019 financial year. The decision to encourage food waste recycling follows the success of a kitchen caddy trial that began in June last year. Council received $8,824.50 as part of the Green Industries SA food waste recycling grants program to distribute 2000 household kitchen caddies to green organics subscribers. A waste audit and follow up survey was completed in May this year to assess the results of the trial. Over a two week period, 30 household general rubbish and 30 organic waste bins were inspected. “The results indicate that residents are beginning to utilise the kitchen caddy system for food waste, City of Mount Gambier environmental sustainability Officer Aaron Izzard said. “There was almost double the percentage of food waste in the green organics stream compared to the 2016 audit, 3.1% versus 1.7%. If this figure is corrected to account for the greater amount of lawn clippings contained in the 2017 audit compared to 2016, then the percentage of food scraps increases to 4.8%, almost three times the amount in 2016. Compostable bags were detected in the green organics stream, which is a really positive sign that the bench top containers are being used. However, Mr Izzard indicated that there is still a significant amount of food waste currently found in general waste rubbish bins, with more than 2200 tonnes of food waste sent to Caroline Landfill in 2015/2016. Council has moved to stock replacement compostable bags for those who use a bench top ventilated basket and will also investigate the establishment of a compost rebate program in the 2018/2019 financial year. “This will enable residents to claim a rebate after purchasing a compost bin, worm farm or bokashi bucket and encourage willing residents to manage their food waste at home, Mr Izzard (pictured above with a kitchen caddy) said. Council also moved to actively promote a ‘no food waste in rubbish bins’ message to the community.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - THE SECOND MOST INTELLIGENT SPECIES ON EARTH.. By ROBBIE TANSEL I’m concerned for us as a species. I read recently about a London company who had advertised for an emoji translator. Just think about that for a minute. Someone is going to be employed to tell people what was meant when someone sent a picture of a sad face. Turns out that the Christians have been right for all these years. We didn’t evolve from monkeys. We devolved…or is it unvolved? See, it’s happened to me too. Let’s have a little history lesson. Presumably thousands of years ago early humans communicated with grunts and unintelligible sounds (picture Donald Trump). At some point people started drawing pictures, cave drawings, and other scrawls to communicate. Further into the future

again, the grunts and noises started being used in specific ways associated with particular meaning. From there language gradually evolved. And then some genius decided that communicating clearly with words just wasn’t working. I think that lol was the gateway drug to us giving up on language. First it was lol, pml and wtf and before you knew it we had to put a smiley face into every text message we sent. So that’s bad enough. People are no longer intelligent enough to communicate with words. Think about it a bit more though. Not only are we communicating with little pictures, but we’re not smart enough to understand what the picture is saying! We now need a translator to explain what the picture we’re looking at means. “Mum, why did you send a message to dad saying that he needed to come home soon because I was being a little chocolate ice cream?” Now consider that presumably someone (a whole bunch of thirteen 7 year old girls) would have applied for that job. Did they use emojis in their 5 job application? “I am a [smiley face] person who enjoys long walks on the [picture of beach].” Now think about the fact that this is an actual job that someone is 6 now doing. They get out of bed in the 9 4 morning, get themselves ready for work and then head in to the office. 1 Early in the day, in walks Ashley. “What does this one mean?” 3 8 “It means they’re happy.” 6 “Thanks, Robbie.” Later in the day, here comes lifestyle1.net | 23
Matthew from accounts. “Why is my wife telling me that her father died and now she’s sweating?” “No they’re tears.” “Ohh, that makes much more sense.” That job is going to get old very quickly. The successful applicant is surely snapping at people right now,“He’s surprised! Isn’t it obvious? The eyes are wide open. When did you get so stupid?!” (About the time that you were employed as an emoji translator would be my guess.) Admittedly some of the emojis are already difficult for people to interpret. Someone is going to have to explain to everyone born this century what a floppy disc, fax machine, video tape and North Korean flag are. All of those things either don’t exist or won’t exist soon. If only there was a way to clear up this emoji confusion. Imagine if we could choose letters, put them together into words and sentences and choose them clearly to convey a concise message. I’m not turning stupid though. I’m anticipating this whole gay marriage thing is going to be legalised soon and I’ve bought into a mail order husband business. I’m gonna be rich. If you’d like to send me an emoji, you can contact me at robbietansel@gmail.com

LOCAL FINANCIAL PLANNER SHINES ON THE NATIONAL STAGE Overwhelmed and shocked were the overriding emotions Mount Gambier based Financial Planner Venetia Langlands felt when she found out she
was a finalist in the inaugural National Women in Finance Awards. Eight years ago she started to pave her way in the finance industry and
never expected such an honour would come from what she sees as just doing her job. “I am very passionate about my work,” Venetia said. “I have built very close working relationships with my clients and I love being able to help them through different stages of life.” It was in 2009 that Venetia took the plunge into the world of finance. “I wasn’t looking to move at the time, I was quite happy where I was,” she said. “But an opportunity came up and I thought I might as well give it a go and I haven’t looked back.” Starting in an entry level position, Venetia has basically always worked in the finance advice sector – the names of the roles might have changed but her primary focus remains the same. “It is great to help clients and make a difference in their lives and help them meet their goals,” Venetia said. Venetia works out of both the National Australia Bank Mount Gambier and Naracoorte branches but you certainly don’t have to be a NAB customer to tap into her expertise and personal approach to your financial future. NAB is a sponsor of the inaugural awards but entry was open to females across all sectors of the finance industry, covering 28 categories. Venetia is a finalist in the Financial Planner/Adviser of the Year. “This awards event is an Australianfirst program that truly pulls together all areas of financial services under one umbrella to celebrate success
and excellence,” said award convenor Momentum Media head of events Jim Hall. “We are set for a superb awards presentation. The judges have a tough job on their hands this year and there will no doubt be much excitement to hear their verdicts. The winners will not only represent inspirational high achievers from the financial sector, but also recognise the rising stars of tomorrow.” Venetia works with clients from the retail sector of the bank, as well as self employed business owners and across the agribusiness sector. “It’s all about offering ongoing support and advice to my clients,” she said. Nominated by Rachael Devereaux, her Adelaide based assistant, Venetia is the only NAB finalist in her category.
”It was a real honour to be nominated and to be chosen by the judges as a finalist was just amazing, I couldn’t believe it,” she said. The winners will be announced at a black-tie awards dinner on Thursday, September 21, at The Star, Sydney. LOCAL MUSICIANS VYING FOR STATE AWARDS Two artists with strong Mount Gambier connections are in the running for Music SA Awards as voting opened for the publicly adjudicated honours. Former local Adam Page, who has established himself as one of the most sought after musical talents in the nation, is in the running for the Most Popular World Artist. Page was last in town during the Mount Gambier Fringe and he regularly has returned to the South East to share his talent and story with young musicians. Songstress Tamara Seeley, who is prominent at major local events throughout the region, and so often performs at local haunts including hotels and cafes, is in the running for Most Popular Pop Artist, on the back of her popular single Old Skool Love. Head to the Music SA website to cast your vote and get these two locals over the line. Last year, grunge act Recreator flew the flag for the region, coming home with one of the gongs.

A BIG PROUD PAST, AN EVEN BIGGER BRIGHTER FUTURE As home to Australia’s first pine plantations and some of the country’s earliest sawmills, South Australia has a history rich in timber. For well over a hundred years the timber industry has been a major driver of economic growth in the state and today contributes $1.5B to the state’s economy. South Australia continues to be a major manufacturer of Australian pine products and is home to Timberlink’s Tarpeena mill. Sustainability has always been a vital element of the South Australian timber industry. In 1882 the state created what was the then British Commonwealth’s very first Forestry Department, to protect native forests and develop plantations. Recognizing that native forests were being rapidly depleted to support growth of local communities, various plantation trials were conducted, with Radiata Pine emerging as being most suited to the area. Extensive planting of Radiata Pine was undertaken in 1907 and it remains, today, the principal species plantation grown and harvested in South Australia. With 96% of South Australia’s forests classified as native and therefore unlogged, the early values of sustainability are still very much evident today. Due to the long growth cycle of Radiata Pine it wasn’t until 1931 that there was a sufficient supply of plantation pine for large-scale sawmilling to be practical. The South Australian government established a sawmill in Mount Burr in 1931 and another one in Nangwarry in 1941. One of the first privately-owned large-scale sawmilling businesses was established in Mount Gambier when SAPFOR (South Australian Perpetual Forests) began operating in 1935 in the town of Tarpeena. Later purchased by Auspine and then Gunns it was eventually purchased by Timberlink in 2013. Since taking ownership Timberlink has been purposefully and progressively upgrading and improving the Tarpeena
sawmill to ensure that it remains sustainable. Significant investments have been made across the site to reduce energy usage, including the installation of a highly efficient Contraflow Kiln that uses significantly less energy than traditional kilns whilst improving volume efficiency by 30%. Other investments made to ensure the long-term viability and competitiveness of the mill include new state-of-the art trimmers and scanners in the green mill which have resulted in improved efficiency and a new world class moulder and grading equipment capacity which has improved product quality for Timberlink’s customers. Timberlink is also a major employer of around two hundred people in the region, offering a variety of opportunities across the site and across Australasia, with new-age roles such as Optimisation Managers, Process Improvement Engineers, Business Data Analysts and supervisory and leadership roles with extensive responsibilities for people, safety and efficiency. Recent major upgrades have enabled us to upskill employees in the use of computers and optimisation systems, which many had not previously used. Timberlink is proud of its involvement in South Australia’s timber industry. Plantation pine grown in the Green Triangle region is sustainable and today, some 110 years after the first plantings is well regarded for its quality, stiffness and strength. This makes it ideal sawlog for Timberlink Tarpeena’s mill to manufacture into structural pine products for use across Australia, in both indoor and outdoor applications. To meet the growing needs of the Australian market Timberlink will continue to invest, and with the Green Triangle region well positioned in terms of increasing sawlog availability, South Australian Radiata Pine will continue to be the choice for more Australian homes in the coming years.

ICONIC NURSES BALL SET TO MAKE A COMEBACK The Mount Gambier Hospital renal unit is in desperate need of an upgrade and the most expedient way to finance the critical redevelopment
would appear to be fundraising. Mount Gambier, and, indeed, the Limestone Coast community, has a proud history of not waiting for a hand out but rolling
up their sleeves and getting the job done themselves. Inspired by the heroic feats of the Naracoorte community in its bid for a CT scan and other vital medical services, long time community advocate and former nurse Maureen Klintberg, along with hospital staff member Teresa Bueti and surgeon Matthias Wichman, have resurrected the Nurses Ball concept to kickstart the fundraising for the Renal Dialysis Unit. In its purest form, the Nurses Ball, that has been re-branded the Mount Gambier Hospital Ball, has not been seen since 2002 when a large group of Marilyn Monroes surrounded surgeon Richard Strickland in a choreographed rendition of Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend. In 2017, the theme is Bollywood and rehearsals are already underway, under the watchful eye of Nikki Ackland, as the 25 doctors, nurses and community personalities finetune their performance. Set down for October 14, the event will it not only aimed at filling the coffers to fund the renal unit upgrade, but is also a triple celebration – the 20th anniversary of the Mount Gambier Hospital at its current site; the 80th anniversary of host venue, The Barn Palais and the 80th anniversary of the iconic local radio station best known as Radio 5SE.It will see the return of the Barn Band, featuring Denis Mac, and the vocal stylings of Heidi and Jodie, of Flaming Zambuccas’ fame, while blast from the past Steve Whelan will

compere the evening. “The Nurses Balls have been a big part of the community for a long time,” Maureen said. “I came across an old photograph from back when I was training at the Old Hospital preparing for a Nurses Ball.” And while it was been around 15 years since last it was a part of the social calendar, Maureen is confident it will again attract community support. “It is amazing the support that has already emerged and the enthusiasm of the staff to get behind it,” she said. “Nurses, doctors, all the health workers are now working together to make this a success. We want everyone in the community to join together and really
get behind the hospital and feel that it is their hospital.” While the renal unit is the focus of this fundraising push, getting the hospital to again back a major community event is also about developing a stronger bond between the hospital and the community it cares for. “We want the community to play a role in ensuring the hospital can offer the best possible services and have the best possible facilities,” Maureen said. And that is why the renal unit needs upgrading. Basically the area is too small. It currently houses four chairs and needs two more added to start coping better with demand, and it also needs to allow family members and loved ones to be able to comfortably sit with patients and better privacy. Renal patients endure four hour sittings three times a week and the time has come to bring the hospital’s renal unit into the 21st century, especially when you consider it is currently catering for 14 patients each week, with five on a waiting list. The concept plans are already on the drawing board and it looms as a $1-$1.5million dollar project. Government support for the project is expected but nothing puts pressure on a government to respond than a community taking the lead and raising big dollars tom kickstart a critical project. Mount Gambier’s visiting renal specialist Dr Toby Coates is certainly lending his support to the project, with both his intimate knowledge of local needs, as well as his influence in the halls of power in Adelaide. Tickets are on sale now for the Mount Gambier Hospital Bollywood Ball and can be purchased at the Commodore on the Park, Birdie Blue and the hospital. Tickets are $85 a head for a two course meal and loads of entertainment as The Barn Band takes a walk down memory lane covering every era of the 80 years being celebrated by The Barn and Radio 5SE.
STAND LIKE STONE ON THE CUSP OF MAJOR MILESTONE A huge milestone is on the horizon for the Stand Like Stone Foundation as it shapes to hand out its annual small grants and educational scholarships with the community foundation set to pass the one million dollar mark. The small grants and educational scholarship round for 2017 opened last week and with the current outlay for those programs sitting at $999,300, the million dollar mark will certainly be achieved when the 2017
round is handed out. Since its inception the foundation has delivered over $255,500 in grants, $98,600 in scholarships, $385,000 Back to School vouchers (in partnership with FRRR), $182,500 Stay at School vouchers (in partnership with Wyatt Trust) and leveraged a further $77,000 in external grants into the Limestone Coast community of South Australia. “We are excited to grant our millionth

dollar,” Stand Like Stone Foundation director and patron and founding chair Sue Charlton AM said. “Giving back to the local community is the very reason that the Stand Like Stone was established and to provide $1million to the local community is an incredible achievement. The flow on benefits of this funding for the region would be immense.” Funding provided to date has been shared amongst 180 community projects and more than 8200 students have received support via scholarship funding and programs such as Back to School and Stay at School. Projects that have been supported over the years are diverse including the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival; the Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra (pictured); Millicent Green Fingers and a Community Garden greenhouse; the District Council of Grant learner driver Geared2Drive pilot program; ac.care and Bianca Gillin Multimedia and their work with foster children and Mount Gambier North R-7 School and Glencoe Central Primary School music programs for disadvantaged and migrant children. Stand Like Stone was established in 2004 by a passionate group of people from across the Limestone Coast region seeking to create a community fund to benefit the region. “Media coverage on Stand Like Stone is often centred around raising funds. It is wonderful to bring the focus on the very reason for our existence, to support the local community and provide funding to build sustainability and resilience in the
local community. It is our core activity,” said Stand Like Stone Foundation chair Bill DeGaris said. “With over $3.5 million in trust and the ongoing support of the local community Stand Like Stone is well placed to continue to make a difference. We work with local people, schools and organisations to create awareness of the scholarships and grants and to target individuals, families and organisations that will derive the greatest benefit from funding.” Stand Like Stone Foundation’s small grants and scholarships are now open and organisations can apply for grants of up to $5000 for charitable projects that benefit Limestone Coast communities and will have up until 5pm on September 30 to apply for funding. Scholarship funding is available for Individuals with a connection to the Limestone Coast, seeking financial
support to achieve their educational goals in 2018. Scholarships are open to all ages and are available to support education from Kindergarten through to Tertiary and Trade based education. Scholarship applications are open until 5pm on October 31. “There are so many interesting ideas out there that have the potential to make a real difference to our local towns.,” Mr DeGaris said. “These grants and scholarships give the opportunity for these ideas to come to fruition and for local students to achieve their educational goals. We are looking forward to giving the millionth dollar back to the community.”

HONOURING THE BRIGHTEST & BEST IN MILLICENT A more diverse field of winners than ever before proved the highlight of the 2017 Millicent Business Community Association awards held earlier this month. Inducting Sebastopol Machinery Service into the Hall of Fame was also a memorable moment from the gala presentation as the Altschwager family was recognised for more than six decades of service to the Millicent and district community. Three generations have run what started as a small repair shop to now being a major agricultural machinery dealership and 5THE FM’s Sheryl Lowe said the stories surrounding Hall of Fame inductees were critical. “It just goes to show businesses can
have longevity in Millicent,” she said. Now in their seventh year, the Millicent Business Community Association Awards are about acknowledging not only excellence in business but also the role businesses play in the local community. “It is also very rare that you get businesses and competitors together in a social setting and that’s really important too,” Millicent Business Community Association president Lee Morgan said. With more than 140 nominations for the 2017 gongs, the emphasis on customer service continues to be the cornerstone of the awards. “We need to seize the opportunities that present themselves in terms of
tourism and encouraging people to stay another day,” he said. “If we are a friendly, welcoming town with good customer service, it will happen.” In a pleasing sign going forward, the diversity of the award winners showed all industries and businesses were embracing the awards. “There were businesses from the industrial area out of the main town centre and it was good to see a broad spectrum,” long standing sponsor 5THE FM’s Sheryl Lowe said. “It was real proof that people are thinking about what we have here and not just the obvious businesses.” The community radio station manager also said the two employee
awards were also critical. “It’s not just about showcasing the business but the staff as well,” she said. “Those employee categories are getting more and more nominations each year which just goes to show that local businesses and their staff are doing something right.” Sharon Fox, from NBC, was named Employee of the Year, while the Young Employee of the Year went to Malseed Real Estate’s Aimee Granziera. The Community Spirit Award, which is sponsored by Foster’s Foodland, in memory of family patriarch Bob Foster, went the way of Dave Reilly’s Panel and Paint. “They were really quite taken aback by that but they put a lot back into the community,” Lee said. It is an award the
association sees as just as important as the awards that acknowledge business success. Reilly Builders took out the Construction/Trades/Manufacturing category; Blade Runner Turf triumphed in the Agriculture/Horticulture/Viticulture section, while Indian restaurant New Heaven made it three wins in four years in the Hospitality and Tourism category. Enchanted Beauty by Brianna is now also a multiple winner, with Brianna Scanlon going back to back in the Service award, while the Retail honour went to Absolutely Anything. With the champagne bottles barely at the recyclers, the association is already looking to the 2018 awards and a shift in focus. cont. opp. page Left (from left) - Hall of Fame inductee Sepastopol Machinery Service accepted by Phil Altschwager and presented by Wattle Range councillor Sharon Cox; Community Spirit Award accepted by Kelly, on behalf of Dave and Kaye Reilly, and presented by Brian Foster, from Foster’s Foodland; Service Award winner Brianna Scanlon and Julie Reilly accepting the Construction/Trades/Manufacturing Award from South Eastern Times editor Jason Wallace.

“We want a lot more focus on viticulture, agriculture and the farming sector next year,” Lee said. And aside from the awards, the association is also looking to implement more programs to ensure the Millicent business community continues not just to survive but to thrive and Business at Sunset is one of those initiatives. Eight times a year, businesses will be invited to a drinks and nibbles function at a
Millicent business, as they share their story. “It is basically letting people know how they got where they are at the moment and providing inspiration for other businesses,” Lee said. The one hour, happy hour type function was started in July, avoiding the awards season, as well as Easter and Christmas. “It is a model that has worked very well in Central Australia,” he said.

Members of Jik Cheung Kung Fu Australia, based in Mount Gambier, were recently provided the opportunity to attend a two day martial arts seminar in Adelaide, courtesy of both the Society of Martial Arts Inc. (SOMA) and the World Ju Jitsu Federation – World Ju Jitsu Kobudo Organisation (WJJF-WJJKO) Australasia. The two day seminar consisted of cross training between a number of different styles of martial art, and included both open hand and weapons training. Across the weekend, students received training in traditional karate techniques (Shotokan
style), hanbo (stick) techniques and Aki-Jitsu striking and breaking. Multiple instructors provided various self-defence techniques from several martial arts styles, including two sessions conducted by local Jik Cheung Kung Fu instructor Sifu Amadeo Cella. Students also enthusiastically undertook training in bokken (wooden sword), Ju Jitsu ground defence and throwing. The hospitality shown by the instructors and other students made the weekend both interactive and enjoyable. Sidai Anthony Baseley was also surprised with a cake to celebrate his birthday. The weekend
was an interesting and exciting blend of multiple martial arts styles, and all students returned with a different perspective on martial arts. Jik Cheung Kung Fu Australia would like to thank both SOMA and WJJFWJJKO Australasia for the opportunity to attend such an exciting event, and thank all the instructors for travelling interstate and passing on their expertise during the weekend.

It is an award the station secured in 2012, with former station manager Rebekah Lowe also taking a top national gong in 2014. It is just reward for Sheryl Lowe, who has been an integral part of the 5THE FM, and has taken the reins since daughter Rebekah moved north to forge a career with the ABC. Looking

to further engage the community, Sheryl has implemented a structured 8.30am12noon programming schedule, and that sees interviews with council and a variety of community groups and it has given that personal touch to the morning show and listeners have responded positively to hearing direct from their council and also seeing the human side of the faces behind running the region. “We have really increased the local content with the change in programming,” Sheryl said. “One of the main criteria of community radio is community engagement and the local interviews every morning are certainly doing that. Wednesday is council day and it has been great for listeners to get to know their council, getting the background of the people, detail on decisions and what’s happening with funding.” 5THE FM is also working with two of the region’s schools, teaching students about how to put a radio show together and to air. They are now heading into the third course they have run in this new educational aspect to their community role. Community groups have also embraced the opportunity to hit the airwaves and promote their projects and invigorate interest in the work they do. Sheryl has also brought a renewed focus to training. “It might be community radio but you want it to be the best it can be,” she said. “And you want to get the right people into the appropriate time slots.” Sheryl will head to the conference, where the awards
will be presented, taking advantage of the opportunity to network and source new ideas. The 2017 conference is in November and will be hosted on the Gold Coast. The Millicent community radio station has also received the good news that their licence has been renewed for another five years. “We really breezed through that process,” Sheryl said. “We have also received some funding.” Sheryl is hoping the station can continue to extend its broadcast area. PERSONAL LOSS LEADS TO CANCER FUNDRAISER Everyone deserves a lifetime is the theme of a Cancer Council SA fundraiser being held in Mount Gambier at the end of next month. The sad fact of the matter is not everyone gets to enjoy that lifetime and that’s why Anja Didsbury has put together this fundraising event to raise funds to support the Cancer Council and to honour her aunty, Robyn Messenger (pictured), who sadly lost her battle with cancer last month. The September 30 gala event will be held at Thyme at the Lakes and the $80 a head function will include canapés, dinner, a comedy show, fashion parade, silent auction and live music. SPORT AT A GLANCE SOUTH EAST VETERANS GOLF Fifty-one veteran golfers gathered at the Attamurra course to do battle last week. Thre were plenty of good scores, with the First Division being taken out by wily local Rob McIntyre, with 38 points, from Wayne Dunford, 37, and Arch Sunderland getting third on a countback, with 36. Two Naracoorte boys fought out the Second Division on 40 points with another countback, Max Clifford taking the chocolates from Peter “Stodgy” Stoganovski, who was fresh from cleaning up at his home tournament the day before. President Bruce on 39, ran third, also on a countback. The NTPs went to John Millhouse on the eighth, and “Lucky Max ” on the 16th, usurping the master, John Howe. The Ross Orchard trophy was won by Mike Griffiths and Wayne Morris and the balls ran down to 29 points. The next day out will be on the Blue Lake course on August 28, and then Bordertown on September 11.

SAINTS STAR SUITS UP FOR 100TH MATCH She might have only played 100 games as a Saint but what an impact. A successful junior coach, Bryant has been an association best and fairest as a Saint and has been part of five premiership teams. Bryant has been named in the SA Country Top 10 every year she has represented Western Border and was the successful 17 & Under coach in 2016. Known for her speed and accuracy in delivery, Bryant continues to be arguably the premier mid courter in the competition.
HARD WORKING DEMON REACHES 200 GAMES She is currently secretary of the South Gambier Netball Club and a huge part of the social committee and Emily Harvey is one of those people of which every club needs at least one. A C Grade premiership player, umpire and coach over the journey, Emily is continuing the proud tradition her family has at the club and has been as important off the court as on during those 200 games.

LONG SERVING SAINT HITS THE 150 GAME MARK Tough and hard working are the works which probably describe Carol Grimes and the atheltic Saint has a trophy cabinet full of club and association accolades, including runner-up A Reserve association best and fairest in 2006 and ‘07 and B Grade association best and fairest in 2011. Premiership success has eluded Grimes, although she does have a grand final best on court medal to her name along with a stack of runner-up accolades. Grimes has also done plenty of coaching.
POPULAR MAGPIE PLAYS GAME 250 Kalangadoo’s Chris Mules is one of those blokes even opposition teams love and on Saturday the premiership Magpie celebrated his 250th game with a crucial win over premiership rival Hatherleigh.
PREMIERSHIP DEFENDER MARKS 150 MILESTONE She started as a Saint in 2007 with a 15 & Under premiership and debuted in A Grade the following season. Kimmi Varcoe has been part of six A Grade premiership teams as either wing defence or goal defence and was part of the 2015 SA Country Championship winning A Grade Western Border team and the team that finished runner up in 2016.
