COVER - SUSTAINABLE FARMING IN FOCUS SMG Collective is built on a simple philosophy – a commitment to regenerative farming practices; ethical treatment of animals and the local community. The company is a collaboration of three Limestone Coast and Western Victorian farming families who realised those three pillars were the foundation of each of their farming operations. It made sense to combine forces and work together to produce the best quality, healthy produce possible, based on treating the land and their animals with respect. The first exciting product to be launched by SMG Collective is The Splendid Egg pastured free range eggs but there is so much more to come with lamb, beef, chicken and pork all on the agenda of these committed sustainable farmers. “We are passionate about developing a sense of community around ethical and sustainable farming, sharing ideas and education on the importance of good soil, happy animals and, as a result, beautiful food,” sales and marketing manager Liam Brokensha said. “We want to build an honest, transparent, ethical, premium brand, where the consumer knows they are getting a premium, nutrient dense product, direct from our paddocks. We would like a brand name that people quickly associate with as being clean, green and
healthy.” The Splendid Egg is the first step in achieving that vision, utilising the highly vaunted chicken caravans, an innovation that won the 2012 Farm Invention of the Year. It gives chickens 24 hour access to pasture, allowing them to consume a range of seeds, insects and plants, resulting in beautiful fresh eggs with the highest nutrition and taste possible. The Splendid Egg also taps into the paddock to plate mentality taking over our food experience with people wanting to know exactly where their food comes from and also enjoying food that has done limited kilometres – put simply, they want to know the farmer supplying their food and The Splendid Egg does just that. And the health benefits are undeniable as research into pastured free range eggs reveals. There is twice as much Omega 3, triple the vitamin E, six times more vitamin D, seven times more pro-vitamin A beta-cartone and increased antioxidants and then the other good news is they contain up to a third less cholesterol and a quarter less saturated fat. Local suppliers, cafes and other food outlets have all joined The Splendid Egg revolution and SMG Collective is looking forward to adding to their range of sustainably farmed produce sooner rather than later.

OUT & ABOUT
NURSES SHOW THEIR ARTISTIC FLAIR
Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival • VARIOUS LOCATIONS, PENOLA • May 19-22 A blend of performance and participation, the festival is celebrating its 25th year in 2016.
Portland District Health’s nurses are showing another side of their talents with a new art exhibition. The exhibition coincides with International Nurses Week on May 9-15 and will feature paintings, sculpture and jewellery made by PDH nurses. It will be held at the Julia Street Creative Space with an official opening at 5pm on International Nurses Day, May 12. Organiser and emergency department nurse Janina Jackson said the art would reflect the work and lives of PDH nurses. “It was our turn to organise activities for International Nurses Week so we thought we’d do something to show a different aspect of our personalities,” Ms Jackson said. An artist herself specialising in pencil drawings, Ms Jackson said it would be pleasing to show the creative side of nurses. “Many nurses turn to art for the therapeutic benefits,” she said. Some nurses will also don traditional uniforms during the week. International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence
Nightingale’s birth. The theme for 2016 is Nurses: A Force for Change: Improving health systems’ resilience.

NBN ROLLOUT IN BARKER
BEST TRAVEL AGENCY GROUP WINNER 2015
Residents living in regional and rural areas in Barker can begin to connect to affordable, highspeed broadband with the launch of services on nbn’s Sky Muster satellite network. Member for Barker Tony Pasin welcomed the official launch of nbn’s commercial Sky Muster broadband service late last month. “This is great news for people in Barker that will finally be able to access high speed internet.” Mr Pasin said. The new highspeed broadband service is a practical example of the Turnbull Government’s plan to successfully transition Australia’s economy and to create more jobs. Offering download speeds of up to 25 Megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of up to 5 Mbps, the Sky Muster service will provide a faster online experience for internet users living in regional and remote areas. “The
Australian Government has invested $2 billion in two advanced Ka-band satellites and a network of ground stations that make up the Sky Muster service,” Mr Pasin said. “The remoteness of our continent and its islands is no longer a barrier to broadband connectivity thanks to nbn’s Sky Muster.” Each service requires a professional installation of a new receiver dish and indoor modem. “Many homes and businesses in Barker are still dependent on very basic internet access which makes even online banking or emailing difficult. Sky Muster will change all that for many thousands of Australians,” Mr Pasin said. Equal priority will be given to new customers and current nbn Interim Satellite Service users migrating to Sky Muster. Around 5,000 users per month will be connected in the early months of the rollout before scaling up to 10,000 installations per month later this year. More than 600 installers have been fully trained and are forecast to reach on average one to two premises per day due to safety considerations and extended traveling times involved in each installation. An estimated 11,960 homes and businesses in Barker will be eligible to connect to the service as they are outside of nbn’s fixed line and fixed wireless coverage areas. A variety of different broadband plans are available from providers and pricing compares favourably with current international and local commercial satellite and mobile internet plans. For more information on eligibility and retailers visit: www.nbnco.com. au or freecall nbn on 1800 687 626.

ON THIS DAY
25TH ANNIVERSARY GRAPE ESCAPE A HUGE SUCCESS
May 12 • 1907 Revered US actress Katharine Hepburn was born. A four time best actress Oscar winner, Hepburn was also famous for her long running romance with Spencer Tracy.
Thousands of food and wine lovers from near and far descended on Halls Gap over the weekend to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Grampians Grape Escape, one of regional Australia’s longest running food and wine festivals. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Grampians National Park, Victorian Minister for Regional Development, Jaala Pulford officially opened the festival on Saturday morning before exploring exhibits and meeting attendees and producers. “The Grampians Grape Escape is one of Victoria’s oldest and best known food and wine festivals. These events are a big boost to the local economy and keep small businesses strong,” Minister Pulford said. The weekend attracted a bumper crowd of over 7000 patrons who experienced the offerings of more than 100 of western Victoria’s finest food and wine producers. Festival director David Wheaton was thrilled with this year’s event. “It’s been an enormous 25th birthday celebration for the Grampians Grape Escape; we couldn’t be happier with the weekend. It was wonderful to see big smiles on the faces of locals and visitors enjoying themselves,” Mr Wheaton said. “The community spirit and involvement from exhibitors, volunteers and everyone else who worked tirelessly to bring the event to life has been phenomenal and I thank everyone for their hard work in making the event a success.” In honour of 25 years, the Grampians Grape Escape recognised Grampians Estate winemaker, Tom Guthrie for his long history with the festival by awarding him with the first lifetime membership. Australian music icon, Kate Ceberano provided the ultimate final act for the mass of dancing fans on Sunday, belting out favourite tunes following on from performances by Monique Brumby and her band The Ryders, Mutti Mutti man, Kutcha Edwards and The Settlement over the weekend. Headline chef Miguel Maestre wooed the crowds over both days, sharing his culinary
secrets through lively cooking demonstrations while ‘edible adventurer’ Alice in Frames delighted all with her quirky stories and meal creations. Once again the Grampians Winemakers Barrique Reserve Shiraz was highly sought after by local, Melbourne and interstate wine buyers and was a unique feature of the weekend. The Royal Mail Hotel VIP Lounge was a hit, selling out prior to the event with guests treated to lunch prepared by executive chef, Robin Wickens and premium wine tastings from some of the festival’s best exhibitors. The weekend offered something for everyone with connoisseurs tasting their way through some of the best wine from the Grampians, Pyrenees and Henty regions while kids enjoyed traditional grape stomping and plenty more, making for a great weekend for all.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - FURTHER THOUGHTS FROM THE GOLD COAST... by Robbie Tansel I’ve been back from my holiday on the Gold Coast for about two weeks now. As much as I enjoyed my trip, it certainly provided me with plenty of things that puzzled and frustrated me. I came to the conclusion that going to a theme park is one time when being a little person is a bad thing. Most of the time being a little person must be good. You can buy children’s clothes. You can hide in small boxes and jump out and scare your friends. There are so many fantastic options for costume parties: Oompa Loompa, munchkin, smurf, leprechaun. But when you go to a
theme park you’re treated like a second rate citizen and discriminated against. You still have to pay full cost to come in, you just can’t do anything except go on kiddy rides. If you are not eligible for ninety percent of the rides, then you should not have to pay ninety percent of the cost. Have they not ever heard of booster seats? Another frustration at the theme parks was Fasttrack passes. For those who haven’t been to the theme parks recently (or ever) when you go to a theme park you can purchase a Fasttrack pass. Once you have purchased a Fasttrack pass you can go to a ride, ignore the queue where people have been standing for the last forty five minutes, walk to the front of the line and get on immediately. That has to be considered an assault on our fundamental democracy. Essentially because I have a child I now have very little money. I can not afford to buy a Fasttrack. However as the parent of a four year old, I probably need to go to the front of the line more than any other person, for everyone’s sake. You don’t want this four year old in line near you whingeing for the next hour. What message does it send to children that the people with the most money get special treatment that poorer people don’t get? It’s not a good message for a privileged child who gets a Fasttrack, nor for a normal child standing in the line. The theme parks are looking for any way they can to bleed money out of tourists, so the concept of Fasttrack shouldn’t come as a surprise. The theme parks are one of the places where you are charged a surcharge for using your credit card. In effect, you are being charged for the privilege of paying. I’ve said it before, but if a business feels the need to pass on a charge the bank is making them pay, then simply factor it into the pricing. I resent paying ten dollars for some hot chips, another ten dollars for a soft drink and then being slugged one and a half percent for using my Visa. You can’t tell me that they’re not making enough of a mega-billion dollar profit that they can’t
wear the charge from their bank. Or surely if they have a billion dollar account at a bank they’ve got a bit of leverage to convince the bank to waive the surcharge or they’ll take their business elsewhere. I’m not sure if my frustration about these issues are what led to an unfortunate incident at Seaworld. Seaworld has a ride for kids where they are in a pirate ship complete with water canons. People stand along the route that the ship travels where there are also water canons. The people on the boat try to shoot water at the people standing who are also trying to shoot them with water. I found that it really brought out my nasty, cowardly side as I targeted little kids and hosed them down. I don’t think I made anyone cry, but how could I really tell considering how wet I made them? I didn’t spend all of my time at theme parks by the way. One thing I noticed in my other travels on the Gold Coast is that there are more tattoos per head of population there than any other place on Earth. There are more tattoos than a bikie gang. There are more tattoos than a Collingwood football player. There are more tattoos than an eighteen year old’s birthday party. Can someone tell me why every kid thinks they need a tattoo these days? They can’t figure out what they want to do with the next week of their life, but they know that they’re going to love having that barbed wire tattoo around their bicep and butterfly on their butt for the next sixty years. Tattoos per person statistics have skyrocketed in the last five years, from 0.8 tattoos per person in 2011 to 3.2 per person
The latest in gas fire technology...
in 2015. That’s a four hundred percent rise. I might have made that up but I’m pretty sure you can’t prove it. On the subject of tattoos, have you noticed that flight attendants never have face tattoos, or giant spacers in their ears? Are the airlines being discriminatory or do people with face tattoos and giant spacers just not want to be flight attendants. Did I mention that I’ve collected a heap of my equally ridiculous articles into book form, had it published and I’m launching it at the Mount Gambier Library on 26th May at 7:00? Email me at robbietansel@gmail. com if you think that’s a good idea.

THE TRADITIONAL & UNUSUAL ON DISPLAY AT THE SEASIDE
AT THE GALLERY The String Thing • GALLERY 54, PENOLA • May 20 – July 4 • Recognised for their contemporary fine art using diverse mediums including painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, fibre and sculpture, the Gallery 54 Artist Collective members have interpreted the theme The String Thing for this exhibition.
Twisted Threads and the Mount Gambier Basket Weavers have combined their talents, culminating into a blend of traditional and unusual crafts spanning from basketry, the finest hand crafted textiles to the distinct and quirky. Their latest works are on display in the Port MacDonnell Community Complex Art Gallery until Wednesday, May 29. Featured in this exhibition is work by Indigenous creator and Proud Boandik Woman, Michelle Jacquelin-Furr. Michelle has recently joined the Mount Gambier Basket Weavers and has expressed her heritage and knowledge through basketry. She has also brought to this exhibition her family history in the form of a Boandik Possum Fur Cloak created in true traditional practice. It retells her family story and connections to Boandik country. Traditionally Boandik people wore possum skin cloaks which were a prize possession of the people, accompanying the owner until death. Michelle’s relative, Annie Brice, born about 1849 in an Aboriginal camp near Old Penola Station was a young aboriginal woman with strong connections to both the Indigenous and English communities. Michelle tells Annie’s story in Boandik, English and in illustration. Visitors who view this exhibition will draw deeply from the selection of works of show. Twisted Threads have combined their yarn interpretations with crafts to interest all people. The basket weavers have drawn on their environment for materials and inspiration. Recycled
materials from the ocean are a feature in the basketry on show. The Mount Gambier Basket Weavers will be working on current projects at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex on Sunday, May 22, from 11am to 3pm and the Twisted Threads will gather at the Complex on Wednesday, May 25, from 10am to 2pm. Beachport Residents Urged to Connect to Sewer Scheme
BOOK OF THE WEEK
Wattle Range Council is encouraging Beachport residents to take action in connecting their properties to the townships wastewater management scheme. Commissioned in May 2014, the Beachport Community Wastewater Management System is a modern, full sewer system that removes both solid waste and wastewater. Since it has been operational property owners have been given up to two years to arrange a connection to the scheme. During this period, council has not been charging a fee for applications to connect an existing septic or aerobic systems to the sewer. However, applications received after June 30, 2016 will incur an application and connection fee. Currently these fees are $214 for an application and $2800 per connection. Landowners should contact a licenced plumber to arrange connection of their system to the scheme. Further information is available at www.wattlerange. sa.gov.au/beachportcwms or by contacting Council on (08)8733 0901.

Around two-thirds of us say we believe in God or some ‘higher power’, but fewer than one in ten Australians attend church weekly. In Beyond Belief, Hugh Mackay presents this discrepancy as one of the great unexamined topics of our time. He argues that while our attachment to a traditional idea of God may be waning, our desire for a life of meaning remains as strong as ever. Mackay interviews dozens of Australians representing many different points on the spectrum of faith, including some who are part of the emerging ‘spiritual but not religious’ movement. Written with all the insight and compassion we have come to expect of our leading chronicler of Australian life, Beyond Belief is an engrossing exploration of the ways we find spiritual fulfilment in an avowedly secular age. Hugh Mackay is a social researcher and the author of seventeen books eleven in the field of social analysis and ethics, and six novels.

TECHNOLOGY HAVING AN IMPACT IN THE VINEYARD Cameras attached to fixed-wing aircraft are providing data to viticulturists which is helping to identify canopy temperature – in order to improve water use and wine quality. The pilot project – which has been part funded by the State Government – is helping researchers learn how to reduce vine water stress and improve nutrient status so better irrigation decisions can be made. The State Government has contributed $40,000 to the project through the Primary Industries and Regions SA Premium Food and Wine Co-Innovation Cluster program and the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources Environment and Water Stewardship Program. A final report on the results of the trial flights and data gathering is due next month. The Innovative Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated Project is being undertaken at 21 vineyards. The collected data includes chlorophyll levels, vine canopy temperatures and vine growth. It is being converted into maps on a block by block basis. Coonawarra viticulturists are using the technology with the assistance of researchers from the University of Adelaide. South Australian Agriculture Minister Leon Bignell said this research was helping growers not only understand their vineyards better but potentially save on water use. “It is a great project and I would like to thank the Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated for embarking on it, as well as the wineries who are taking part from across the region,” Mr Bignell said. 'They have recognised the need to become even more resilient and the project has the potential to have a very real impact.' Environment Minister
TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS
Ian Hunter was also enthusasitic about the pilot porject. “This collaboration is another example of South Australia’s pioneering work to help primary producers, businesses and residents to adapt to global warming,” he said. “This is a project that goes Vegetarian Spaghetti Bolognese beyond the wine industry with results obtained so 2 tablespoons olive oil far indicating the potential for significant benefit 1 onion, finely chopped for other primary industry sectors.” And the results 1 carrot, chopped are already having an impact for local producers. 1 celery stalk, chopped Katnook Estate vineyard manager Chris Brodie said 2 garlic cloves, crushed the initial flyover revealed some areas under stress 2 tablespoons tomato paste and in response to that information they replaced 1 cup (250ml) red wine 50 irrigation lines. “A second flight indicated that 1 teaspoon chopped rosemary the affected vines are already showing signs of 1 bay leaf recovery,” he said. “Access to actual vine water 700ml tomato passata stress information in a timely and relevant way 1 cup (250ml) vegetable stock means that our company can use water more 2 x 400g cans 4-bean mix, drained, efficiently and potentially improve the quality of rinsed our wine.I think the information obtained from 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley this project will provide many unforseen benefits. Method Heat oil in a large saucepan over low heat, add onion, carrot and celery and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add garlic and tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes, then increase heat to medium, add wine and allow to bubble for 2-3 minutes. Add rosemary, bay leaf, passata and stock, reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes. Add beans and cook for a further 5 minutes, adding more stock or water if the sauce is too thick. Stir through parsley and season. Meanwhile, cook spaghetti in a large pan of boiling, salted water until al dente. Drain, toss through sauce and serve with parmesan.

NEW CCTV COVERAGE IN MOUNT GAMBIER
ON THIS DAY
The City of Mount Gambier Council has installed a number of new CCTV cameras within Mount Gambier’s streets and public spaces. 23 new 2 & 3 megapixel, infra-red, pan-tilt–zoom cameras are now fully operational and are monitored at the Mount Gambier Police Station. The Attorney General Department provided council with $40 000 of funding as part of the 2015 CCTV Grants Program. The council, together with SAPOL, has a clear set of goals to increase community perception of safety and decrease antisocial behavior and offences. Research has proven that Australian cities have benefited from CCTV crime prevention strategies. The City of Perth was the first Australian city to establish an open street CCTV system in 1991, and since then Australian cities have seen rapid expansion of CCTV. Camera imagery has made technological leaps, where detail at both day and night is now very clear and can be monitored more effectively. Improved CCTV combined with follow-up research and evaluation has seen research bodies tackle questions about the effectiveness of CCTV in reducing crime. Interest and awareness within businesses and communities has increased greatly since the first cameras were introduced in Mount Gambier, and it’s became evident that the community supports CCTV, through a number of street surveys. Surveys about people’s perceptions of safety, particularly within the City Centre were undertaken to engage the community on concerns, and opinions about new CCTV. Council has since undertaken interviews with business owners, managers, bar tenders and security guards/bouncers to raise awareness of the new CCTV, and evaluate observations of new cameras and antisocial activity. A lot of respondents to surveys within the community felt it increased their perception of safety and supported the use of CCTV and the effectiveness of the CCTV in reducing crime is to be evaluated further.
May 15 • 1536 Anne Boleyn, Queen of England, stands trial in London on charges of treason, adultery and incest. She is condemned to death by a specially-selected jury.
Antisocial behaviors within public space includes anything from vandalism, noise, nuisance, littering, verbal harassment etc. Police will target this and other more serious crimes, including car theft, drunk and disorderly behavior and assault. Council encourages community input in helping Police prevent crime and antisocial behavior. Community input and increased awareness of new cameras can make a significant difference in reducing criminal offences and antisocial behaviors. Council will continue to evaluate the effectiveness of the CCTV and encourages community involvement in evaluation process.

CELEBRATING VOLUNTEERS - GRANT DISTRICT COUNCIL The District Council of Grant is lucky to have so many community-minded people living in the area who contribute their precious time to volunteer for the many different sporting, charity, emergency services, youth, environmental, history, art, education, seniors, halls, progress and tourism organisations. With around 140 volunteer organisations in the Council region, including more than 30 in the township of Port MacDonnell, these volunteers make a huge difference to the lives of those who live in, or visit the area. Council also has volunteers who assist young people in the region gain their drivers licence through the Geared2Drive program. Volunteers are trained by Council to support learner drivers undertake the 75 hours of supervised driving required before they can apply for their provisional licence. Without the support of these volunteers the program would not be
possible. Volunteerism at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex is another positive example of local government and community working together to increase services and support for the local community. Dedicated volunteers offer their time, experience and knowledge at the Complex, which assists in it being able to open seven days a week. “To help celebrate National Volunteers Week, we invite all volunteers who live, or volunteer, in the District Council of Grant to a morning tea on Thursday 12th May”, said Mayor Richard Sage, “this is a token of appreciation for the wonderful volunteers who help provide much needed services and support to the District Council of Grant Community.”
MATCHING VOLUNTEERS - WATTLE RANGE COUNCIL Have you often thought about volunteering or what different volunteer groups do in the community? Wattle Range Council is hosting an innovative Volunteer Matching Initiative which will provide a unique opportunity to match volunteers to organisations from in and around Millicent, Tantanoola, Rendelsham, Mount Burr and Hatherleigh. The event will take place at the Millicent Gallery until this Thursday. More than 40 community organisations have registered their interest to be part of the event and they are offering over a 100 different volunteer positions for all ages and skills, including jobs such as painters, radio operators, umpires and sports trainers, cooks, drivers and administration, just to name a few. Each of the registered organisations will display a poster detailing their name, what they do
as an organisation, their contact details and particulars of up to five volunteer positions they are keen to fill. Volunteers are invited to inspect the posters of all 40 organisations and to make contact with the organisation(s) they are interested in to facilitate the match. So if you are community minded, enthusiastic and would like to contribute back to the community as a volunteer of a community group, then do not hesitate to attend the Volunteer Matching event. It is envisaged that if successful further events will be coordinated across the district. Council would like to acknowledge the generous support from the Medical Clinic Millicent in this initiative. For further information contact council’s community development officer Sarah Marzec on (08)8733 0900.

CELEBRATING VOLUNTEERS
State of Volunteering in Australia The State of Volunteering in Australia report details the trends, demographics, challenges and successes in the volunteering sector in Australia. Key Findings: 1. Responses suggest there is a disconnect between the volunteering roles that people are interested in and the roles that organisations are offering. 2. There is misalignment between the sectors volunteers are interested in and the sectors with the most positions advertised. 3. There is support for the creation of an informal volunteering platform. 4. Volunteers are deterred from volunteering because of lack of flexibility, personal expenses incurred, lack of reimbursement for out of pocket expenses, and burdensome administrative requirements. 5. Volunteer involving organisations generally lack resources, both human and financial, and this can inhibit their ability to engage volunteers with barriers (e.g. people with a disability, people with language barriers). Lack of resources may also reduce an organisation’s ability to recognise their existing volunteer base, and engage with corporates through Employee Volunteering Programs.
6. Volunteers are not getting responses from volunteer involving organisations about opportunities fast enough. 7. Online methods of recruitment and volunteering could complement the needs of future volunteers. Key Statistics: • 92% of volunteers feel that the organisations they volunteer for provide them with the right opportunities to match their interests and needs • 93% of volunteers saw positive changes as a result of their volunteering • 99% of volunteers will continue to volunteer into the future • 67% of volunteer involving organisation say that volunteers bring new insights • 60% of people improve of their patience skills through volunteering • 44% of volunteers have engaged in virtual volunteering in the last 12 months, a trend we expect to increase • In a volunteer involving organisation 57% of the workforce are volunteers • While 86% of volunteer involving organisations say they need more volunteers, they face the following obstacles: - 30% say they were not able to engage the optimal amount because there were not enough suitable candidates or there was no means of
locating them - Internal barriers such as time constraints (12%) - Limitations stemming from an inadequate funding base (12%) • 51% of organisations do not have the resources to recruit or engage volunteers with barriers • The biggest barrier to people volunteering into the future is work commitments and out-of-pocket expenses incurred through volunteering • The most important forms of support for volunteer involving organisations into the future is information and training around volunteer management, networking with other organisations and the ability to connect with volunteer management experts • To encourage more informal volunteering opportunities respondents suggest the development of a technological platform to help people connect

GLENCOE WOOLSHED SET TO COME TO LIFE
When the 150th anniversary of the Glencoe Woolshed was on the horizon the Mount Gambier branch of the National Trust wanted to plan something special to celebrate the milestone. That was how Blades of Glencoe was born. The 150th anniversary celebrations went off without a hitch at the end of 2014 but the true step back in time came when the woolshed was brought back to life erly last year with a trop down memory lane that saw 40 blade shearers showcasing the dying art and capturing the imagination of the local community. Brothers Edward and Robert Leake would have felt right at home at the Glencoe at the March long weekend last year when for the first time in more than a century that the rustic woolshed was being used for its original purpose – shearing. By the end of the day, 700 sheep had been shorn and even the old wool press got a work out. The shed was at capacity and humming with
the same energy it would have 150 years prior. It was also a stark reminder of just how physical life was in the shearing shed more than a century ago. It was Apsely shearer Richie Foster, who attended the 150th anniversary celebrations, that sparked the idea – he was convinced his blade shearing colleagues would relish the opportunity to bring the old shed back to life – and he was right. “When Richie first suggested it, he thought there were about 15 shearers that might want to come,” National Trust committee member Glenys Hughes said.”When he started asking around that number grew to more than 30. If it wasn’t for Richie the event would never have happened. It was a tough job to coordinate a time when all the shearers could be here and without the shearers there was no event.” Not only did the inaugural Blades of Glencoe exceed the expectations of organisers but it has spawned an event that could well become a
regular on the calendar, despite initially being organised as a special but one-off event. Given the makeover required for the 2015 event, including constructing new yards, it does make sense for the facility to again be brought to life. The yards aside, the shed was in remarkably good knick with only minor maintenance required inside the 36 stand facility. “It’s a testament to its construction, the fact we could turn a mob of sheep in here 150 years after it was built and shear them,” National Trust member and local fifth generation sheep farmer Tony Altschwager said. And he should know. The shed was built in 1863 and it was in the 1860s that his family first settled in the Glencoe district. And just as the inaugural event wasn’t all about the woolshed but also boasted an animal nursery, musical entertainment, wool spinning demonstrations and plenty of onsite catering, the May 15 event this year will again have a similar feel, as it becomes a part of South Australia’s History Festival. Local Sport NETBALL State honours for teenage stars South Gambier’s Jordyn Adams (left) has been selected in the Under 15 Schoolgirls State netball team to compete in the national championships in Adelaide from July 30 to August 5. The talented defender has been playing 17 & under netball for South Gambier for the past two seasons, despite still being eligible for 15 & under, and has also been in the A Grade line-up for that time as well. A member of Western Border teams at 13 & 15 & under levels, Jordyn is again part of the Western Border 15 & Under team which is looking to defend its South Australian title at this year’s country championships. In 2014 she won the 13 & Under Western Border Netball Association best & fairest, also clinching the Consistency Award – an award she shared with Donna Denton and Lisa Duldig – for polling in the most number of games during the season. Millicent’s Nyah Allen (right), who was part of the South Australia’s SAPSASA State netball team a couple of years ago, and is the reigning Western Border Netball Association 15 & Under best & fairest, also playing out of age group, was named a reserve for the team, and is still eligible to trial again next year.
SOFTBALL Triple treat for Mount High softballers The Mount Gambier High School Open Knockout Softball side have been crowned State champions - taking the title for the third consecutive year. The team, coached by Samantha Brown, travelled to Adelaide to play at Softball Headquarters – Barratt Reserve West Beach - in the State finals, after defeating Tenison Woods College in the local round 12–0. Boasting a side with State and national players – in Amber and Georgia Hood, as well as Jenna Burston and Imogen Walker – the team had high expectations. The opening game saw Mount Gambier High School dominate St Peters College from the first innings, scoring six runs to nil. Georgia was in fine form on the mound and with the bat, hitting a home run in the second innings. Tayla Stark, Isabella Morale, Amber and Imogen all had solid batting performances, which resulted in an 8–0 final score. Game two was a much tougher affair against our 2015 grand final rivals Immanuel College. Early errors in the field saw Immanuel College ahead in the first innings with three runs, but a home run from Amber that also scored Isabella, ensured the score was a much closer affair at the bottom of the first. Georgia lifted a gear on the mound and struck out seven of the next ten batters to ensure no further runs were scored for the game. Imogen, Isabella, Jenna, Claire Day, Amber and Georgia all had safe hits for the game. Game three saw Mount Gambier High School take the foot off the gas against Unley, as they struggled to bat in the first two innings. Tayla had a blinder of a game at left field, taking three ripping catches, to help prevent the scoring of runs and also had two safe hits for the game. Imogen took to the mound and displayed a solid pitching performance holding Unley to two runs for the game and after 18 batters, only four safe hits were registered. A batting rally in the second, with safe hits from Isabella, Amber and Georgia, as well as Tayla, saw Mount Gambier High School score four runs to win the game 5–2. After the conclusion of the round robin, it was clear from the results it would be a replay of the 2015 grand final with Mount Gambier High School playing off
LOCAL RUGBY The continued development of the Mount Gambier Rugby 9s competition (not 7s as incorrectly reported last week) has been highlighted with nine players from the local league named as part of the State Men’s squad - the most of any regional or metrolpolitan league in the South Australia. Jay Drakely, Tui Makore, Jayden Gascoyne, Roydon Walker, Tom Dolan, Anton Lopez, Josh Hiku, Will Marshman and Jason Bird are all part of the 2016 training squad, which will be culled to 25 ahead of the June Long Weekend national championships in Adelaide.
against Immanuel College. The Hood sisters again combined as a pitcher/catcher duo and the team never looked back. Georgia struck out the first three batters, while Imogen and Isabella had safe hits which resulted in two runs scored. At the bottom of the third, the game was tight, with only a 3–0 score line. At the top of the fourth, with Mount Gambier High School at bat, the safe hits began to flow, with Imogen, the Hood sisters, and Claire Day all contributing to three runs for the innings. At the bottom of the innings, Immanuel scored two runs after a big hit to centrefield, and Mount Gambier High School had two outs. A hit to second and a clean play by Imogen and Isabella at first saw the innings end without further score. In the fifth, the safe hits continued to flow. Kali Langley had a safe hit to left field to start the batting rally, while errors allowed Imogen, Isabella, Amber and Emmerson Hann all on base. Claire again showed her ability with the bat, hitting safely to rightfield. Georgia came up to bat and had a massive hit to leftfield that not only scored runs, but also enabled her to collect her second home run for the day. With seven runs scored, Immanuel was back in to bat at the bottom of the fifth, but was unable to put bat on ball against the dominant Georgia, with three strikeouts
registered to close out the grand final winning 13–2. The win meant Mount Gambier High School was Open Knockout Softball State Champions for 2016, completing the threepeat, having won in 2015 and 2014.This is the first time in the records dating back to 1979 that a country school has completed the trifecta. Best players for the grand final were Georgia Hood with her impressive efforts on the mound and with the bat, Amber Hood with a dominant catching and batting performance and Claire Day for her solid batting and fielding. The most consistent batter for the finals series was Amber Hood, having a batting average of 0.800 (eight out of ten safe hits for the day). A highlight was Georgia Hood with 27 strike outs for the day out of 44 batters and only two safe hits recorded against her. The Mount Gambier High School side managed to score 36 runs and only had 7 scored against them for the day.

FOOTBALL Long serving representative player set to take coaching reins The Murray South East Zone Team will compete in the 2016 South Australian Country Championships on July 9 and 10 in Port Lincoln with Penola playing coach Adam Merrett set to take the reins as zone coach. He replaces former Penola team mate and former South Gambier coach Luke Duncan, who has moved. Merrett (pictured right in action at last year’s championships) is in his thirrd year of coaching Penola in the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football League and as a player has played with the Penola, Port Adelaide Magpies and West Gambier Football Clubs. Merrett started playing senior football at Penola in 1998 and had two seasons of senior football before venturing to the Glenelg Football Club for the 2000 and ‘01 seasons, winning the U19 Tomkins Medal for the Best & Fairest in the Under 19 competition in 2001. Season 2002 to ‘04 saw a return to the Penola Football Club before returning to Adelaide for the 2005 season with the Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club, where he played league football. Due to work and family commitments he returned to Penola for the 2006 and ‘07 seasons before moving to West Gambier as assistant coach for the 2008 season. He returned home to Penola in 2009 and has continued his football journey with his beloved Eagles. His involvement in Interleague, zone and state football has been a long and fruitful one, having been selected as an All Australian at the 2008 Australian Country Championships, held in Shepparton, in Victoria. This year is the fourth year Adam has been the interleague coach of the KNTFL, having led the team to the inaugural South East Zone Carnival championship. Merrett has
been a passionate player when it comes to representative football enjoying the opportunity to test himself against the best players in the state and has been a popular player with his team mates. He has been at his best when representing his State and will bring that passion to zone football. The Infigen Energy South East Zone Carnival, which is being played on June 11, at Naracoorte Football Oval, will give Merrett a great opportunity to see players in action for the training squad to represent the Murray South East zone team. The squad will be named after the carnival.
Mount Gambier Swimming Club member Elijah Stratford who is 10 years old, was one of just 48 students selected for the Under 12 SAPSASA swim team to represent South Australia in Darwin in September at the national championships. Elijah was selected as part of the 7-10 Victorian Country Championships in the South West Barwon District last year and earlier this year represented the Lower South East District at SAPSASA State Swimming Championships held in Adelaide at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre. It was at this event he achieved a silver medal in 50m freestyle, as well as a bronze medal in 50m butterfly. Elijah is one of only a few regionally based swimmers selected for the 2016 team. He was also recently awarded a trophy at the local club’s presentation night for the Highest Achiever. Full details of awards presentation in next week’s Lifestyle1.

Runners up were John Howe 38, from John Shirley 37, and 2nd div, Robbie Gordon and Ross Bain who had 37 each. NTP’s were Lyndsay Copeman, John Shirley, and Sammy Mainwaring, a very close one. Ian Telfer kept the Telfer name in the spotlight by helping “Arch” secure the NAGA, and balls were given out for 30 points or more. The next day out is Monday, May 16, at Harrow, for a district challenge against the Wimmera and Glenelg vets, with a splendid array of trophies up for grabs. Please be there by 8.30am SA time for a shotgun start.

MOTOR - SA ROAD FUNDING MISSING FROM BUDGET RAA is disappointed that last week’s Budget did not reveal any new funding for roads in South Australia, despite other states receiving an investment in infrastructure. “It seems the eastern states have fared well, but South Australia is obviously not a priority for this Government,” said Penny Gale, RAA General Manager Engagement and Innovation. “We can take some comfort in the knowledge that the Government is still committed to the NorthSouth Corridor upgrade, with almost $329 million to be spent on the Darlington, Torrens-to-Torrens and Northern Connector projects in 2016/17. “Now we’ll be looking to the election to deliver major road funding commitments for South Australian roads, particularly the Augusta Highway and Sturt Highway. “Australian motorists pay billions in taxes and charges each year, however the allocation of funding into road and public transport infrastructure remains ad hoc, unfair and lacks transparency. “That’s why we’ll continue to call for all net fuel excise to be invested directly in a transport infrastructure fund and we’ll call for an inquiry to be conducted into future transport funding as
recommended by Infrastructure Australia.” However, RAA has welcomed the $4 million allocated to learner driver training program keys2drive, which is run from its Adelaide offices. “That’s enough to keep the program running for another 12 months, which means we can continue to provide significant road safety education to some of our most vulnerable road users,” said Ms Gale. “We recognise the Federal Government intends to implement alternative funding arrangements for keys2drive beyond 2016/17 and we look forward to working with the Government to demonstrate the many benefits this program can deliver to ensure beginning drivers are safe drivers.” ANCAP, another road safety initiative, only received a 12-month commitment in the Budget; receiving $1.1 million. “We, along with the AAA, will continue to seek a Government funding contribution for independent on-road vehicle emissions testing in the wake of revelations that some car manufacturers had falsified emissions and fuel efficiency test results.”
MOTOR - HYUNDAI TOPS APRIL SALES FIGURES Hyundai was Australia’s number one selling passenger car brand for April, after another solid market performance. The result comes off the back of continued strong sales for i30 Series II – which was Australia’s top-selling car for the second month running – along with the Accent light car which also led its segment. Its industry-leading 6,324 passenger car sales contributed to Hyundai’s impressive overall sales total of 8,643 units for April, a 19.9 percent increase over the same month last year. Year-to-date Hyundai is place third overall with 33,045 sales representing a 7.2% increase over the same period last year. For the second straight month, i30 Series II was Australia’s favourite car, with 4143 sales and 26.2 percent segment share.
Accent also continued its standout start to 2016, once again leading the Light Car segment with 1555 sales for the month and a 23.9 percent segment share, proving its exceptional value for money in a highly competitive market. “Once again I am proud to say i30 is Australia’s favourite car,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Operating Officer, Mr Scott Grant said. “The i30’s continued popularity has helped Hyundai become Australia’s leading passenger car brand in April. This is a first for us, and confirms our outstanding popularity with family buyers across the nation. We are pleased to welcome so many new-car buyers to Hyundai and we’re confident they will be as impressed with their aftersales service as they are with their cars.”
MAZDA KEEPS RAISING THE BAR Mazda has enjoyed its best April on record, adding to the new benchmarks set in the first three months of the year. According to VFACTS figures released today, Mazda sold a record 8,461 new cars, SUVs and utilities last month breaking the previous record of 8,068 set in 2015. The tally gave Mazda a 9.7 per cent April market share overall, while Mazda’s sales are up 4.9 per cent up Year-On-Year (YOY). Mazda’s April record follows three consecutive record-breaking months of over 10,000 sales, and is the eighth successive month that Mazda has set an all-time monthly record. In-fact, new records were set in 11 of the last 12 months. Year-To-Date (YTD), Mazda has sold a benchmark 38,910 new vehicles, up 7.0 per cent YOY, and enjoys a 10.4 per cent slice of the Australian market. Mazda continues to be the second most popular car maker and maintains its position as the country’s leading full-line import brand. Mazda again showed the strength of its range by recording new April records for Mazda CX-3, New Mazda BT-50 and AllNew Mazda MX-5, while Mazda CX-5 had its second-best April result. Mazda CX-3 - which arrived in Australia last March – had its best April ever with 1,604 sales. Accounting for almost 20 per cent of sales in its segment, and with 6,131 sales YTD, CX-3 is the nation’s most popular small SUV Mazda CX-5 remains Australia’s most popular SUV thanks to 1,675 April sales - its second-best April performance ever. Its 7,833 annual sales gives it a 17.9 per cent segment share. The MX-5 juggernaut continues unabated with an April-record 185 sales. This means an astonishing 1,608 All-New Mazda MX-5s have been sold since its on-sale date last August. Put into perspective, the Roadster’s biggest calendar year was 2006 with 1,468 sales. In support, New Mazda BT-50 had its best April ever with 1,057 sales, and Mazda6 maintains its place as the nation’s most popular mid-sized import under $60,000 with 314 sales. With current CX-9 stock almost gone thanks to the impending arrival of Brand-New Mazda CX-9, buyers interested in Mazda’s family-sized SUV are urged to visit their local Mazda Dealership sooner rather than later. Mazda Australia managing director, Martin Benders said: “At Mazda, we build high-quality vehicles that are stylish, fun to drive and safe. Our range continues to be top of mind thanks to these attributes and the outstanding experience offered to Mazda customers across the entire Mazda Dealership network.”
