COVER - NOTHING BEATS LOCAL EXPERIENCE When someone has been in the tyre business for almost four decades, you can be rest assured they know their stuff, and that’s the case with Jack Gabrielli, who has teamed with wife Abbey, who has taken on the managing director role, to take on the Beaurepaires Mount Gambier franchise. Jack started as the region’s Goodyear representative in 1978 before opening his own business – Mount Gambier Tyre & Brake Centre – and when the chance came for the couple to take up the Beaurepaires opportunity, they were ready, willing and able to take up the challenge. Already running Gabrielli Tranpsort, a successful log haulage transport company that boasts 13 trucks, since 2011, Jack and Abbey went through a rigorous approval process before securing the Beaurepaires’ nod of approval. Cristy Turley is also a key part of the team as Abbey’s right hand girl. Cristy has been with Beaurepaires since 1999 in office administration and if anyone knows the business from the ground up, it is Cristy. Combine that with Abbey’s managerial experience and Jack’s extensive industry knowledge and the new owners tick all the boxes. “Cristy has seen many changes in the Goodyear Dunlop Tyres Australia group and is excited for the business to be locally owned and managed,” Abbey said. Customer service has been at the core of business success for Jack and Abbey and that is exactly what they intend to continue at Beaurepaires, and they are grateful to be surrounded by an experience, professional team that will ensure they continue the core business of Beaurepaires – regular tyre maintenance. Shane Fabian started with Beaurepaires in 1999, as well, and is an expert in forestry tyres and truck
Phone
wheel alignments. Open from 7.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, Beaurepaires also offers an extensive after hours service. Car and 4WD wheel alignments, truck wheel alignments, truck and trailer tyres, tyre rims and batteries are all part of the Beaurepaires experience, with Jack and Abbey also set to add mechanical services to the repertoire. Beaurepaires Mount Gambier is also a platinum sponsor of the Women in Business & Regional Development, as well as the Pioneers Basketball Club.

OUT & ABOUT
STAFF GET BEHIND WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE
Coonawarra After Dark • April 8 & 9 Experience all the thrills, excitement and the lights of vintage as Coonawarra wineries open their doors to visitors at the peak of the grape harvest (vintage).
Mount Gambier High School Staff and one very brave student have shaved their heads for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. Earlier this month saw the culmination of Mick’s Greatest Shave campaign. What originally started as groundsman Mick Ashby signing up to support a cause close to his heart soon escalated into a pledge by staff members Kerran Wingard, Matthew McInerney, Chris Edmonds and Josh Fidler (pictured above & left with Mick Ashby - centre), to also get the chop, when Mick reached and then exceeded his initial target of $2000. The final boost of funds was provided when Year 11 student Jack Hann (pictured left) bravely offered to shave off more than four years of growing out his hair. Jack’s biggest concern after seeking approval from his Dad - what would his Mum think? However, without too much fanfare Jack said his mum was supportive of the cause and his Dad was just happy he had a haircut. In 2009, Mick was diagnosed with Lymphoma and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy over a 12 month period. During this time Mick met others who were undergoing treatment from young children through to the elderly. Staff at the Oncology Unit were absolutely amazing and made his time of treatment as comfortable as possible. With the generous support of the school staff, students and the wider community Mick was ultimately able to reach the final tally of $4830. ‘It was fantastic to see students and staff willing to donate to such a great cause,” Mick said, “The atmosphere on the day was incredibly supportive and a wonderful reminder of the sense of community the school has.” Bec, from Sharee’s Hair Design, kindly completed the enviable shaving task in front of hundreds of students. lifestyle1.net | 04 edit - mick ashby head shave.indd 1

INSPIRING A NEW GENERATION OF FEMALE COUNCILLORS Join the GoWomenLG2016 conference next month as Glenelg Shire Council aims to inspire a new generation of female leaders in the community. Featuring many past and present former south-west based councillors, the forum will encourage women to take the next step and stand as a candidate in the local government elections in October 2016. Glenelg Shire has partnered with the VLGA (Victorian Local Government Association) to host the regional event on Tuesday, April 19, at the Portland council chamber which will inspire, encourage and inform women about the opportunities of being an elected representative in the community. VLGA president Cr Sebastian Klein said the event was a fantastic opportunity to learn about the election process and councillor role, hearing directly from experienced women councillors whilst meeting other potential female candidates. “I encourage any women who are considering participating in their local government elections to come along and find out more about what’s involved and what resources are available,” Cr Klein said. “There’s some fantastic community advocates out there and the VLGA is committed to supporting them to take the next step and help share in their community’s future. Women tell us that candidacy is a great way to expand your sphere of influence for the issues you care about and it’s a valuable step-by-step learning experience. It allows you to set your own goals for success regardless of electoral outcomes decided by voters.” Included on the panel is former Warrnambool Mayor and Peter’s Project committee member Glenys Philpot, current Warrnambool Mayor Cr Kylie Gaston and Warrnambool councillor Jacinta Ermacora, who is also a former Mayor. Glenelg Shire councillors Anita Rank and Karen Stephens (pictured) will also join the ‘on the couch’ discussion. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said Glenelg Shire was focused on embracing diversity and was proud to actively encourage women to aspire to leadership
roles, whether in the council or wider community as board chairs or presidents on committees. “If you have thought about standing for council or know a woman who might be great, this event will help answer the questions you have about being a councillor and achieving positive outcomes for our community,” Cr Oberlander said. “The panel will discuss being a voice for your community and how to be an effective councillor, making a lasting difference.” Event details GoWomenLG2016 Venue: Glenelg Shire Council chamber, Cliff Street, Portland • Date: Tuesday, April 19 • Time: 4.30pm to 6pm • Drinks served on arrival RSVP – srobertson@glenelg.vic.gov.au or call (03)5522 2254 by April 12.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice • NOW SHOWING Fearing the actions of Superman are left unchecked, Batman takes on the man of steel, while the world wrestles with what kind of a hero it really needs. With Batman and Superman fighting each other, a new threat, Doomsday, is created by Lex Luthor. It’s up to Superman and Batman to set aside their differences along with Wonder Woman to stop Lex Luthor and Doomsday from destroying Metropolis. Following his titanic struggle against General Zod, Metropolis has been razed to the ground and Superman is the most controversial figure in the world. While for many he is still an emblem of hope, a growing number of people consider him a threat to humanity, seeking justice for the chaos he has brought to Earth. As far as Bruce Wayne is concerned, Superman is clearly a danger to society. He fears for the future of the world with such a reckless power left ungoverned, and so he dons his mask and cape to right Superman’s wrongs. The rivalry between them is furious, fueled by bitterness and vengeance, and nothing can dissuade them from waging this war. However, a dark new threat arises in the form of a third man: one who has a power greater than either of them to endanger the world and cause total destruction!

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF SAVING LIVES
KUNG FU PANDA 3 - NOW SHOWING Continuing his “legendary adventures of awesomeness”, Po must face two hugely epic, but different threats: one supernatural and the other a little closer to his home.
On April 3, 1996, a group of Mount Gambier community minded people gathered to form the Mount Gambier RFDS Support Group. Twemty years on and with $713,000 raised, the group will celebrate this milestone birthday with a weekend of festivities, this weekend. On Saturday night, the Mount Gambier Airport will be transformed into a beautiful function centre, hosting 100 guests at the Group’s fourth Dinner at the Drome. Former Mount Gambier residents Vikki & Spence Denny will be special guest speakers. Vikki, a senior flight nurse with the RFDS, will no doubt have many special stories of her challenging and important role with the RFDS, while many may remember Spence with his time at ABC South East radio, a role he continues with the ABC in Adelaide. Just Duo It will supply wonderful jazz music. Air Force Cadets will once again attend to your every need, as you enjoy a delicious three course meal. Licensed bar available. A Silent Auction of many outstanding items will on offer to purchase, the premier prize being two Gold Tickets on The Ghan. Jason Scheidl will be our most capable MC. For last minute ticket enquiries, contact Godfreys on (08)87257366. On Sunday, The Rail will be a hive of activity from 10am–4pm with a Family Fun Day. The RFDS Simulator will be a central attraction. An opportunity to have a “sneak peak” at the interior of one of these fabulous aircrafts. Jumping castle, face painting, merry go round, putt putt golf and model steam trains will entertain the children. Market stalls and car boot sales are among the many attractions along with prestige vehicles from three local car dealers and approximately 80 vehicles and motorcycles from local clubs - Holdens of Age, Mount Gambier Veteran & Vintage Car Club, South East Street Machines, South East Classic & Unique Car Club & the Limestone Coast Ulysses Club. here will be a cake cutting ceremony at 2pm plus guest appearances from local bands, dance groups and
singers. With more than 15 food vendors and a pop up bar, your taste buds will be enticed. The key fundraiser for the day will be a Donate-athon where the group hopes to raise thousands for the RFDS and celebrate its 20th birthday in style. “It’s amazing at our various fundraising activities how many local lives have been touched by the RFDS,” said RFDS Support Group Mount Gambier branch secretary Jamie Sutherland. “We are told quite regularly that if it wasn’t for the RFDS our daughter, mother, grandfather, nephew wouldn’t be alive today. We hope to set our fundraising barometer on the boil this Sunday with support of the Mount Gambier public and with 522 landings at the Mount Gambier Airport to the financial year ended June 30, 2015, this is and will remain such an important service to our community.” Be sure to get down to The Rail this Sunday and enjoy the day and keep “the flying doctor flying”

FREE SATURDAY PARKING IN PORTLAND CBD Retailers and shoppers are applauding the announcement of free weekend parking in the Portland CBD following the success of a recent summer trial. Glenelg Shire Council last night endorsed free Saturday morning parking in the shopping precinct, which covers any metered car park in the CBD including Bentinck, Julia, Percy and Hurd Streets’. Mayor Max Oberlander said the three month trial, which was due to finish at the end of the Easter long weekend, had received widespread positive feedback from the community with calls for its continuation. “Local traders, residents and visitors to Portland have all applauded this free parking initiative which is helping to boost local retail business and our profile as a welcoming shopping and tourist
destination,” he said. “Council is committed to building our local economy and supporting local retailers with this free weekend parking policy. It makes a clear statement that Portland’s doors are open for business. This initiative is another important step in creating a vacancy free CBD and further encouragement for people to shop locally, supporting their local retailers. Any step that can generate more foot traffic in our CBD is a positive move for our town and economy.” Parking signs across the CBD will be changed to reflect the free Saturday morning parking over the coming weeks. Other parking restrictions, such as disabled and no standing areas, will continue to be enforced.

The UniSA Australian HPV Super Series is staged by Australian International Pedal Prix Inc. and is a competition where teams from schools, universities and community groups race Human Powered Vehicles (HPV’s) on a closed controlled circuit. As naming rights sponsor of the Series the University of South Australia has recognised that the series encapsulates many of their core values around education, the development of sustainable communities, healthy lifestyles, communication and teamwork, and research and innovation. HPV competition started in South Australia in 1986 with a single event for 20 teams. In 2016 the competition has grown to six events, five in South Australia and one in Western Australia, attracting hundreds of teams and thousands of competitors from all over Australia. Thanks to the support of the City of Mount Gambier, Grant Council and the Marketplace Mount Gambier, HPV racing comes to Mount Gambier for the first time in 2016 with a field of 50 plus teams made up of more than 500 competitors, taking part in the inaugural Mount Gambier eight hour race this Saturday at McNamara Park. The McNamara Park race circuit is regarded
as the best HPV circuit in Australia and promises to be an exciting circuit for teams and spectators alike, with vehicles reaching speeds up to 70 km on the fast and technical track. Before race day all vehicles competing must be scrutineered to ensure they comply with the rigorous specifications set out by the organising body. Scrutineering will be conducted in Mount Gambier at the Railway Lands reserve on the station platform from 2–6pm this Friday. This is an opportunity for members of the public to see vehicles up close and meet the teams competing in the race. On Saturday, the race commences at 9am and continues non-stop until 5pm. Entry to the venue is by a gold coin donation. There is ample on-site parking and catering is available all day thanks to the Mount Gambier Motor Cycle Club. There will be an off track “come and try” display for those interested in knowing more about the sport and wanting to experience riding an HPV, and a number of manufacturers of HPV’s in Australia will be on site to offer advice to those considering taking up the sport.

AUTHOR RETURNS TO HER ROOTS WITH NEW BOOK Wendy Altschwager published her first book back in 2011 and the somewhat accidental author is now set to traverse the region she once called home promoting her fifth offering – Talk of the Town. Wend actually shelved that first book for two years after writing it, before family and friends encouraged her to seek a publisher – they had enjoyed her story telling style and were confident others would as well. “I guess in the end I got enough compliments and people saying they couldn’t put it down that we decided to try and publish,” Wendy said. She had always enjoyed writing but had never really contemplated it as a career. The former Tantanoola local, though, was soon encouraged to reach a wider audience by friends, who found her emails incredibly entertaining – emails she started sending when she and husband John moved to Western Australia and it was a way to keep her in touch with friends and somewhat defeat the tyranny of distance. “They all commented on how they felt like they were right here with me and it kind of just went from there,” she said. “I don’t use fancy words, I just describe things as best I can but everyone that’s read the book just loves it.” Runaway was her first book as she told the story of a young teenager living in rural Australia. Not only did Runaway take only eight weeks to write, it also spawned a sequel – Edwina Downs. With a background in the equestrian world and an association with horse racing, Wendy’s was always going to tackle those industries as her writing career blossomed and that’s exactly what she did with Prior Knowledge – her third book. The Pledge was her fourth book and now she has released Talk of the Town. “I never have trouble thinking of what I want to write and I really love it - I
just have so many ideas, it’s honestly just a matter of finding the time to write them down,” she said. Set in the Mid North, Talk of the Town emphasises the difficulties faced by many living in rural Australia. It highlights the importance if community, entwined with interesting characters found in the country. The storyline was inspired by her home town of Tantanoola, once a thriving community, the town waned when the rail service ceased. As land holdings became larger, the population dwindled, and struggling businesses closed their doors. Nowadays all that is left is the pub and the school. Wendy will be visiting libraries across the region to talk about her latest book and her writing career. She is published by Peacock Publication, in Adelaide, as well as selling through her facebook page. WENDY’S VISIT TO MILLICENT • APRIL 5

MOTOR - ICONIC MUSTANG UNVEILED IN MOUNT GAMBIER It was a mix of nostalgia and innovation as Barry Maney Ford unveiled the 2016 Ford Mustang at a gala launch at the Mount Gambier Rail Lands earlier this month. The 120 invited guests were treated to a trip down memory lane with three 1966 and ‘67 Mustangs on display – two coupes and a fast-back – as well as four of the 2016 Mustangs – a convertible, two V8 manuals and a Ecoboost turbo. With the old mill as a backdrop and a projection of a Mustang Pony completing the marketing magic, Barry Maney staff were able to showcase not only the brilliance of the 2016 Mustang but also the history of the iconic Ford. “With the help of Finn’s Fine Foods and a pop up bar thanks to the South Aussie Hotel, we were able to have an outstanding night, celebrating the Ford Mustang with staff and clients,” dealer principal Barry Stafford said. “It was also good to be able to share with everyone Ford’s transformation to a fully imported car company. It is all positive, to be able to access cars globally and have them come into the Australian
market and now gives us one of the most comprehensive and freshest showrooms in automotive dealerships.” Barry Maney has sold 24 Mustangs already, and with a 14 month wait, now is the time for Mustang aficionados to head to Barry Maney and test drive the iconic Ford. “If you’re in the market for a Mustang you need to get your order in now – the wait could shorten up – the sooner you get in the queue, the better off you will be,” Mr Stafford said. “We welcome anyone to come out and have a look at the Mustang and take it for a test drive.”
Below - Barry Maney Ford dealer principal Barry Stafford with Jason Thornhill - the proud owner of a new Ford Mustang.
ICONIC FORD MUSTANG - 2016 Loaded with innovative technologies and delivering high levels of performance and style, the all-new Mustang is the next chapter in the life of one of the world’s most iconic cars. “Ford Mustang truly inspires passion like no other car and it has the iconic history to back it up,” according to Graeme Whickman, Ford President and CEO. “The visceral look, sound and performance of Mustang resonates with people, even if they’ve never driven one. It is more than just a car – it is the heart and soul of Ford and with 4000 orders in Australia, it proves that Ford customers love Mustang and have been waiting for its return.” The arrival of Mustang continues Ford’s transformation story. Ford is refreshing its Australian line-up faster than ever with 20 vehicles planned by 2020. Ford also is the only automaker that will continue to fully develop vehicles in Australia with on-going plans to continue to invest heavily in R&D in 2016 on top of nearly $2 billion the past six years. “Many people think the auto industry is closing in Australia, but Ford’s billions of dollars of R&D investment locally and launch of world-class vehicles such as Mustang demonstrate our commitment to serving our customers and communities,” Whickman said. The arrival of Mustang comes on the back of an aggressive 2015 product onslaught. The way Mustang looks, drives and sounds is key to the visceral experience that makes drivers just want to get in the driver’s seat and hit the road. Australian customers can choose between either a four or eight-cylinder engine. It’s the first time a powerful four cylinder has been offered in the iconic car. With either a state-of-the-art 2.3-litre EcoBoost or 5.0-litre V8 available for customers, there is a Mustang to fit any lifestyle. The Mustang’s EcoBoost engine uses direct injection, variable cam timing and turbocharging to deliver plenty of usable performance across a broad RPM range. The EcoBoost engine delivers where a Mustang driver expects it to, with a broad, flat torque curve that pours out when you stand on it for easy passing or hustling down a twisty road. Mustang GT continues with the latest edition of the throaty 5.0-litre V8, now featuring an upgraded valve-train and cylinder heads that help boost output. The clean-sheet design of both Mustang Fastback and Convertible evokes the essential character of the brand, retaining key design elements – including the long sculpted bonnet and short rear deck – with contemporary execution.Several key design features define the all-new Mustang, including a lower, wider stance with a reduction in roof height, and wider rear mudguards and track.
