COVER - FOCUSSING ON THE REGION The Rotary Photographic Art Show will be at the Millicent Civic Centre from March 18 through to March 28. This year there is an amazing array of quality photographers and many who have entered for the first time.

These new entrants offer a fresh perspective and subjects. As the photographs were judged the level of innovative photography and professionalism was noted by the judges and they commented on the calibre of photography, the improvement and the interest shown by both the amateur and professional. With more than 220 entries the quality of the photography, all framed, and the new hanging system developed by Rotary, has resulted in a very professional exhibition, with something for everyone to enjoy, making it well worth visiting Millicent for a look.

This year an additional category was added, reflecting leisure and sporting activities, and has attracted much interest. It is pleasing to see a large increase in the under 19 category and all eight categories have been well supported. There is a continued increase in photographers from the Wattle Range Council area and these entries are also eligible for the regional photographer award in memory of Don Ferguson, former Wattle Range Mayor.

The Peter Rapp Youth Incentive Award, will again be awarded to a young photographer who shows promise. This year organisers have noticed an increase in entries from Adelaide, Victor Harbor and regional South Australia through to Western Victoria. Total prize money of more than $8000 has ensured the Rotary Photographic Art Show is one of significance and is recognised nationally. Building on the success of the previous five exhibitions, additional sponsors have come on board and Infigen Energy,

Kimberly-Clark Australia, DiGiorgio Family Wines, Wattle Range Council, Thompson Drilling and The Baker Group are the major sponsors, with Atkins Technicolour, from Adelaide, Hurst Camera House, of Mount Gambier, and local firms Fosters Foodland, Mac Ford Landrover, Hamilton Hateley and Associates and Lonergan and Muhovics also sponsoring. With the overwhelming success of the past five years, the event is proving to be very attractive to both professional and amateur photographers, raising their profile and that of photography, with many of the photographs sold each year. Last year some of the amateur photographers who entered excelled and reflected the very high standard of photography that is in the community today, skills that are maturing and developing with each year of the competition. It has

been interesting to watch the skill level develop of the local photographers who are now award winners. Mayor Gandolfi will present the Mayoral Award and has commended the Rotary Club of Millicent on this exciting initiative ensuring that Millicent has a month of festivals and exhibitions – March into April! The 2016 photographic exhibition will run through to March 28, closed on Good Friday, and followed by the Geltwood Festival in April. All photographic artwork is for sale throughout the viewing period.

Southern Grampians Shire Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Tudball as its new CEO. The appointment was made at last month’s special meeting. Mr Tudball is currently the Manager of Economic Development and Advocacy at the Melton City Council and has a strong history in population growth and development. He has had senior roles in Victorian State Government Departments as well as owning his own Management consultancy for almost ten years. Michael also spent 8 years as a Councillor with the Moorabool City Council, serving two of those as Mayor. Mayor of the Southern Grampians Shire, Councillor Peter Dark, said that the appointment followed an extensive advertising and recruitment process that attracted a very strong and capable list of candidates from across Australia.

Councillor Dark added that he and the councillors were excited about the appointment. “We are confident that Michael’s extensive background in economic development and population growth will be a huge benefit to the shire, as will his business development and managerial expertise,” Mayor Dark said. “Having a background as a councillor and Mayor is also an advantage and will mean he has a good understanding of all aspects of council.

We very much look forward to having Michael on board”. Mr Tudball said he was looking forward to the challenges and opportunities presented by Southern Grampians Shire. “The shire is ideally placed geographically and with a base level of key infrastructure to build on. The highways and major connector roads, the rail line and its future potential, the airport and livestock exchange along with the broader business community present really exciting potential that I, along with the Council and organisation, look to leverage and grow.

“I come with many recent successes in advocacy, funding and shifting the focus of other levels of government onto the areas that I am involved and I

will bring that to Southern Grampians.

“I also come for a lifestyle where my wife and I can embed ourselves in the local community and combine my council role with both the business community and the broader community.

“I look forward to keeping my fitness up with cycling as I have for the past 20 years and whilst not jumping straight into membership of groups, clubs and organisations, I want to be out and about supporting the work of the community and the Council to ensure we are hitting the mark and providing value for the community.

“We will be delivering a budget, a new Council Plan and welcoming a new Council later in 2016 so I will need to hit the ground running and make sure all is well planned and executed to keep up the good work of the Council.” Mr Tudball will commence his role with Southern Grampians Shire on March 29.

Mount Gambier & District Tennis Association not only brought home the 50th anniversary Baker Shield at the end of last month, it also boasted two teams in the title decider. The Ey Shield went the way of rgw Millient/Peola combine, with Mount Gambier finishing second. The annual Baker & Ey Shields, played at Lucindale, on the stunning grass courts, are a regionwide tournament that sees Limestone Coast associations facing off for bragging rights as the strongest in the region. At the semi final stage in the Baker Shield, Mount Gambier Green took on Southern Ports, with Mount Gambier stamping its authority on the match very early on by taking our of the six doubles ties. Virginia Ross, of Southern Ports, was a stand out for this final, taking out her doubles tie with Leanne Graetz 9-2 over Madeline and Chloe Watson and defeating Madeline in the singles tie 6-1. For Mount Gambier Green, the Tomkins family dominate their singles ties, with both Stephen and Kate winning 6-0 over their respective Southern Ports opponent. Mount Gambier Green went onto win the match 13 set to 5. In the other semi final, Mount Gambier Blue took on the Tatiara Association. Mount Gambier Blue dominated this match right from the outset winning five of the six doubles ties and dropping only two singles ties.

Bradley Mitchell (Mount Gambier) was on the end of very tight loss, with a determined Simon Ballinger (Tatiara) winning the tie 7-6, while Mount Gambier’s Renae Cameron was on the brighter side of a tie breaker, defeating her Tatiara opponent by the same score line 7-6. Andrew vandenHurk, Heidi Heemskerk and Vanessa Maxwell were in top form, all winning their singles ties in convincing fashion as Mount Gambier Blue took out the match 15 sets to 3. In the Baker Shield final, the two Mount Gambier sides took to the court in what was set to be a close encounter. After the six doubles ties, it was three all, and looked to be going down to the wire, but Mount Gambier Green had other ideas in

the singles ties though, winning 10 of the possible 12 ties up for grabs. The scoresheet really didn’t reflect what was actually a ripping contest. Mount Gambier Blue went down in five of the singles ties 6-4, all of which could have gone the other way.

Vanessa Maxwell (Blue) and Bradley Mitchell (Blue) both started on fire against Chelsea McKinnon (Green) and David Ferguson (Green), both leading their singles ties 4-1 before succumbing to big momentum swings from their Gambier Green opponents, eventually going down 4-6 and 6-7 respectively. For Mount Gambier Blue, Mark Heemskerk and Ian Hopes were the only players to taste victory in their singles ties, whilst for Mount Gambier Green, Stephen Tomkins, Madeline Watson, Ashlea Oldfield and Tessa Megaw all carried on their great regular season form to claim comfortable victories over their opponents. Mount Gambier Green eventually took out the match 12 sets to 5 and the Baker Shield title. In the battle for third spot, Tatiara defeated Southern Ports 10 sets to 8. Virginia Ross again was a standout winning her singles tie 6-0 and her doubles 9-1 with Leanne Graetz. The Ey Shield was a round robin event.

HUGE DONATION MILESTONE Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch has donated more than $600,000 to Mount Gambier and surrounding community organisations and projects, since it was established in 2001.

The branch reached its $600,000 milestone last month after their Community Investment Grants program awarded over $41,000 to local community groups and organisations with projects/events occurring between January-June 2016.

The money comes from a percentage of profits earned through the bank branch, which stays in the region and goes towards community investments.

Community Bank® chair Helen Strickland, said the branch was committed to supporting a thriving Mount Gambier and district community.

“Reaching the $600,000 mark is such a fantastic achievement for a community enterprise that many perceived as a far-off dream 15 years ago,” she said.

Recent funding granted by Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch has gone towards supporting a range of community groups, projects and events including Sunset Community Kitchen, RSL Blue Lake Highland Pipe Band and Western Border Football League. “With the support of the local community we can continue to grow our business and, most importantly, our community,” she said.

The next grant round closes on 1 June 2016 for events/ projects seeking funding between July and December 2016.

INNOVATIVE BREASTFEEDING PROGRAM A new initiative believed to be an Australian-first is encouraging more Portland district mothers to breastfeed. Portland District Health (PDH) is offering to pay for mothers and their partner or support person to attend an Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) breastfeeding class in Portland when they register to give birth at PDH.B It is believed this is the first time in Australia that a hospital has paid for local mothers to attend the classes. PDH midwifery coordinator Colleen Hanmer said the health service wanted to highlight the health benefits and encourage women to increase and prolong breastfeeding. “PDH believes this is important so we’re leading by example to promote the best service and support to local women and the health benefits to mothers and children,” Ms Hanmer said. ABA CEO Rebecca Naylor said she was impressed by the PDH initiative and hoped others hospitals followed the example.

“We believe this is the first time in Australia that a hospital has paid for its community members to do our nationally-delivered breastfeeding class, also connecting them into the Australian Breastfeeding Association’s great support network,” Ms Naylor said. The breastfeeding class costs up to $90 for each mum, with the class including one year’s Australian Breastfeeding Association membership.

So far four women have been offered the support of ABA when registering with PDH midwives, and all have accepted PDH’s payment of ABA membership, entitling them to education classes with their partners or support people. “We urge all expectant mothers to talk to their midwife as early as possible about the supports that are available to them,” Ms Hanmer said. “Some have already taken up the option of education classes.” All women intending to birth in Portland are being encouraged by their midwife and ABA to start planning for breastfeeding at about 17 weeks, coinciding with their first antenatal. The move follows the development

of a breastfeeding action plan in 2015 as an initiative of the SEA Change program. Partners in the plan include PDH Midwifery, Glenelg Shire Council Child & Maternal Health, DWECH and ABA Portland Group. One of the actions in the plan is to create supportive environments which encourage breastfeeding. ABA Portland Group spokeswoman Angela McFeeters said breastfeeding is a learned skill. “Information gained about breastfeeding during pregnancy, delivered in a supportive environment, helps a woman to be aware of challenges she might face and gives her strategies to deal with them,” Ms McFeeters said.

“If mums are prepared for breastfeeding before their baby is born, and know all the resources out there to turn to if problems arise, they will have a much greater chance of succeeding.”

Ms Hanmer said although 96 per cent of babies in Australia were initially breastfed, only 39 per cent were exclusively breastfed to about four months; and only 15 per cent were breastfed to the recommended six months. “Breastfeeding provides babies with the best start in life and is a key contributor to infant health,” Ms Hanmer said. Australia’s Dietary Guidelines recommend exclusive breastfeeding of infants until six months, with the introduction of solid foods around six months and continued breastfeeding until 12 months and beyond, if both mother and infant wish. “Evidence shows that breastfed babies are less likely to suffer from gastroenteritis, respiratory illness and middle ear infection,” Ms Hanmer said.

“Breastfeeding also benefits mothers by promoting faster recovery from childbirth; and reducing the risks of breast and ovarian cancers in later life.”

Increasing breastfeeding rates will save taxpayers millions of dollars in reduced hospital and medical practitioner visits.

Local Sport BASKETBALL State call up for local teenagers Four of Mount Gambier’s most talented basketballers have been selected in the SA Country Under 18 teams to compete in the Australian Junior Championships in Adelaide from April 16th to 23rd.The Under 18 nationals are conducted in conjunction with the Kevin Coombs’ Cup, when the best junior and wheelchair basketballers in Australia will be seen in action as they strive for Gold. The Under 18 nationals provide athletes with the understanding of what it takes to represent their state and territory at an elite competition.

These Championships have been the stepping stone to international success for a number Australia’s finest basketballers. Each year the Under 18 Champions are awarded the Men’s Merv Emms’ trophy and the Women the Maree Jackson Trophy. Merv Emms was a pioneer in Australian basketball as a coach, official, administrator and life-long volunteer. Maree Jackson broke new ground for Australian Women’s basketball as the first athlete to attend a US College on a Scholarship and was a member of the Opals which competed in World Championships. The four Junior Lakers representatives are Brenna McKay, Lauren Ross, Kurt Rodis and Lachlan Hunter. McKay and Hunter were members of the 2015 Under 18 State teams and Rodis a reserve. Another talented junior Laker, Zach deWit is a reserve this year. Lauren Ross was a member of the 2015 Under 16 State team last year. All four players turned in top level performances at the Country Cup in Albury in January and are key players in their respective Junior Lakers’ representative sides. Lachlan Hunter’s ability and application have earned him a spot in the Pioneers’ squad and starting five player for the Bulldogs’ SECBL team. It is expected that he will play a pivotal role as a top age player for SA Country in the 2016 Nationals. Kurt Rodis has responded well to the challenge of competing at higher levels over the past several months. He impressed at the Country Cup and is displaying good form, maturity and composure in his Club’s strong finishing run in the current SECBL season. Brenna McKay really came of age in her performances as team Captain at the Country Cup in Albury in January. She has continued in this vein at the local level SECBL competition and is committed to giving her best when she struts her stuff in her final event in SA Country state colours next month. Lauren Ross is a very talented sports woman and has established herself at the elite level in junior basketball ranks after her performances in the 2015 Under 16 National Championships. Her selection as a bottom age player reflects her natural athletic ability and personal commitment. She was a starting player in her club’s SECBL team before moving to Adelaide to attend school at Scotch College. By Beth Serle

WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS •Crouch Shield player Steven Fisher (North Gambier) guided his side to a huge victory with an unbeaten 125 which included 14 fours.

• Yahl Barber Shield skipper Josh Reader led from the front snaring 6/56 but an unbeaten 74 from South’s Josh Thompson and some stunning lower order hitting from Nick Cruise (46) and Jack Capewell (31) saw South not only snare 1st innings points but thanks to 5/22 from Cruise, also picked up outright points.

• A five wicket haul was also not enough for Penola’s George Kidman to get his side over the line in the Eagles Barber Shield clash with East Gambier.

An unbeaten 64 from Ben Clark helped East secure the win despite Kidman’s 5/57.

• Crouch Shield players Craig Hicks (6/19) and Matthew Fatchen (6/60) led their side, Centrals, to an outright victory over South Gambier.

• Kongorong’s Michael Waters almost singelhandedly got his side 1st innings points in their Barber Shield clash with Mil Lel. Chasing 218 for victory, Kongorong slumped to 6/98 before Waters clubbed 11 fours and four sixes on his way to 101 and an unlikely victory for the Hawks.

• Centuries were the order of the day with West Gambier’s Jake Blackwell scoring an unbeaten 101. His 158 run second wicket partnership with Shane Stevens (95) laid a great platform for West’s run chase in its Barber Shield clash with reigning Barber Shield titleholders North Gambier but the Roos were still denied.

I resent serve yourself checkouts. I think they are one of the worst things ever invented. I think they are just another sign of the breakdown of our civilisation. At what point did some suit decide, “Do you know what I think customers want? Less service. I’m pretty sure they think we’re offering too much service so let’s wind it back a bit and make it less good.”

Let’s be honest, that’s essentially what they are doing. They are making your shopping experience just a little bit more difficult and onerous.

And they charge you for the plastic bag that you have to pack your own groceries in. It also concerns me the vital skills that we are letting become extinct. A committee of Naracoorte Historic Vehicle Club members has been busy putting together plans for the 6th annual Pist’n’Broke Machinery Rally, to be held at the Naracoorte showgrounds this Saturday and Sunday. It is hoped to be well supported by stationary engine, tractor and vintage and veteran enthusiasts from all over South Australia and parts of Victoria, as in past years. The rally is organised for these enthusiasts to bring along their beloved tractors and engines and actually have them running to show the public what they are like. A Tractor Trek id being held Saturday afternoon for the tractor ‘guys’ to take their old tractors for a run. This is due to take off at 3.30pm and David Munn is convening this. Market stalls are coming in well for the Cartwright Pavilion and market convenor Daphne Burford is pleased there are a few new and different stalls this year. The market will be open from 9am–4pm. The committee is very appreciative of the local business houses who have been most generous and offered sponsorship and raffle prizes.

going to have whole generations who grow up never having had their bread squashed. Who is going to tell me that they’re sorry about the change when they give me a handful of coins? A computer can’t do that. Let’s just forget for a minute that nobody pays with cash anymore and the fact that you probably could program a computer to deliver a heap of coins and then apologise for it. Won’t we all miss having pimply faced teenagers make out they care about how they gave us our change? We’re just happy if it is within a couple of dollars of correct considering how often they use the expensive checkout and still get it wrong. Who will offer me other insipid and insincere comments like, “Have a good day.” As if they care about my day. I know they don’t care about me or my day. They just want to collect their money and go buy some more credit for their phone. I think we’re going to miss their insipid small talk in general. Who will ask us classics like, “Are you up to much today?” Or, “Is it still hot out there?”

The one demographic who will be happy with serve yourself checkouts are randy teenagers. They are now able to purchase prophylactic devices without having to interact with another human being. Won’t that save a lot of embarrassment? If I wanted to scan grocery items and bag groceries, I would get a job at a supermarket.

I come to a supermarket hoping someone else will provide that service for me. I put this concept in the same

basket as restaurants where you get to cook your own meal at the table. I don’t go out to a restaurant to cook my own tea. If I wanted to cook my own tea, I would have stayed home…if there was any food in the cupboard I wanted to eat. The logical next step is that after cooking your own tea, you’ll then go and wash the dishes. Or they’ll get you to bring your own food items from home for when you cook your own meal.

I’ve actually done a little bit of research and traced this bizarre serve yourself phenomenon back to its origin. Here it is. Build-a-bear. If you don’t know what Builda-bear is, go and Google it yourself. I’m not explaining everything to you. Which makes this now the article version of a serve yourself supermarket.
