GOOD NEWS FOR SEAWL

Bompas of Beachport Triathlon & Fun Run • March 5 & 6 The Sunday race schedule allows you to just come for the day or stay and enjoy the weekend. Join in on Saturday with a FREE Fun Run starting at 3pm For more information log onto www.wattlerange.sa.gov.au

The feline residents of the South East Animal Welfare League’s (SEAWL) cattery are purring with excitement following a staggering $12,000 donation to help rebuild the outdated animal shelter. In memory of her mother Heather Heaver, Mount Gambier resident Sandy Coulson broke the news of the donation to the SEAWL following Ms Heaver’s passing last year. “When it came to thinking about what to do in memory of my mother I thought about what she really liked, and front and centre she loved animals,” Ms Coulson said. The donation will go towards the redevelopment of the cattery as part of the SEAWL’s push to rebuild the facility, which was built more than 40 years ago. “We chose the SEAWL because it is a local organisation and because it’s something both my husband and I can become a part of and we can watch our donation being used to improve the living conditions of the cats being temporarily homed there,” Ms Coulson said. “My mother would be really happy to know that part of the facility has been built in her name.” Ms Coulson fondly remembers her mother as a great animal lover who, with Ms Coulson’s father, passionately advocated animal welfare issues throughout her life. “The house just always had animals and people would often bring animals to my mother to be fixed, from injured kittens or dogs or birds,” Ms Coulson said. “And she didn’t just talk the talk, she walked the walked - I remember when we went through her things when she moved into an aged care facility, there were a lot of copies of letters she and my father had typed and prepared about the treatment of the bears in Cambodia or live export.” Ms Heaver’s love of animals was something she passed along to her daughter who, despite a busy career in the Australian Navy, has always owned a cat. “My husband and I have travelled quite a lot and we’ve always had cats,” Ms Coulson said. “And I think that comes from my mother… she certainly passed along her love of animals to me.”

SEAWL Committee President Anneliese Bates said the donation would greatly boost the not-for-profit organisation’s fundraising efforts and would go a long way towards helping the SEAWL rebuild the shelter. “The facility is over 40-years-old and is very much worse for wear – not only does it no longer meet the needs of our staff and volunteers, but it makes it extremely difficult for the SEAWL to meet the needs of our community,” Ms Bates said. “The committee is currently in the midst of negotiating with Mount Gambier City Council and Grant Council and applying for funding to ensure that we can begin the first stage of the redevelopment as soon as possible.“This donation means that we’re one step closer to ensuring we have a facility that a regional town of Mount Gambier’s size deserves.” Ms Bates said the donation on behalf of Ms Coulson’s mother is the one of the largest the SEAWL has received and the SEAWL team were incredibly excited about the future possibilities the donation has opened up. “We can’t thank Sandy and her husband Peter enough for their incredibly generous donation and for choosing a local organisation that provides such a valuable service to the community,” she said.

PROLIFIC AUTHOR UNVEILS HIS NEXT AUSSIE EPIC Join Glenelg Libraries for lunch with acclaimed Australian writer Peter FitzSimons next month. The highly regarded Sydney Morning Herald and Sun-Herald columnist will speak about his latest book Fromelles and Pozieres: In the Trenches of Hell at a regional author talk at the Portland Golf Club on Thursday, March 10. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said Mr FitzSimons (pictured) had penned more than 27 books detailing Australia’s unique heritage earning him an international reputation as one of the country’s finest writers. “This literary luncheon is a rare opportunity to hear one of Australia’s most prolific historical non-fiction authors. I trust he may be interested to hear about Portland’s unique history as the birthplace of Victoria and our rich cultural indigenous heritage, a story we may be able to entice him to consider writing in the future,” Cr Oberlander mused. Mr FitzSimons has played rugby for Australia, co-hosted radio shows with Mike Carlton and Doug Mulray, and interviewed many famous identities from across the world including former American president George Bush. He is one of Australia’s most popular keynote speakers, and is married with three children to Today Show co-host Lisa Wilkinson. His titles

include biographies on World Cup winning Wallaby captains Nick Farr-Jones and John Eales, former Federal Opposition leader Kim Beazley, boxer Les Darcy, aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, war heroine Nancy Wake and Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson. In 2001 he was Australia’s biggest selling non-fiction author and duplicated that feat in 2004 with his book detailing the war stories of Kokoda. Event details Portland Golf Club, two course luncheon Thursday, March 10, at 12.30pm Tickets $25 available for purchase from the Portland Library For enquiries phone (03)5522 2265.

First free night thie Friday. Wear comfortable clothes & shoes. For further information call 0405 107 524.

A perfect weekend greeted good numbers for the 20th Annual Coonawarra Classic Clash Petanque Tournament, held on February 13 and 14, which again was hailed a huge success by all who attended. The tournament provided some fierce interstate rivalry between South Australian, Victorian, New South Wales and Northern Territory teams over two days of the competition. The Coonawarra Petanque Club celebrated the 20th year of running this event, which now has becoming recognised as one of the biggest and best tournaments in Australia. With the help of the Coonawarra Grape& Wine Association and other local sponsors, teams vied for more than $6000 in cash and prizes, and Championship honours. The extremely successful weekend had 165 players entered, with 55 teams in the competition, creating a great atmosphere and some spirited clashes over the two days. Coonawarra Petanque Club president Guy Detot said that he is still amazed that people travel such a long distance to come is this competition, and added it was also good to see many new players coming to this competition. On Saturday, teams played six qualifying rounds to determine the best teams to go into the “op 16 for the Sunday Competition. Local player Mark Heyn, with two friends from Melbourne, handle the conditions well and qualified in fifth place of the Top 16. Another local team that did well was Andrew Jackman, Guy Detot and Mal Redman who qualified in tenth place. On Sunday, the games got a bit more serious, with the final rounds of the tournament showing an exceptionally high standard of play. Last years winners from Adelaide, Alexi Alexi, George Lainis along with Craig Stuart, showed some great form to again make it to the grand final and defend their title. In front of a crowd of more than 100 spectators, they took on fellow ESP club members Raja Jamaleddine, Lionel Chazel and Kierran Clarke, the ‘young guns’ of

the competition. After a close start, the ‘young guns’ quickly took control, displaying great petanque skills to take out the championship honours 13–2. Raja, captain of the winning team was ecstatic with the win, and said “We have been coming to Coonawarra for many years, and to finally win this event is fantastic, he said. “It’s an awesome tournament and really enjoyable to play in. A good consistent standard of play was continued by the local players of Mark Heyn’s team and Andrew Jackman’s team, finishing tenth and 16th overall respectively. The Coonawarra Grape & Wine Association entered their own team of, Tony Gleeson, Alistair Rowland and Deb Redman, who won a prize for the best placed local team out of the top 16. “The whole weekend has been beautiful with some brilliant petanque being played, said Mr Detot. “Over the past 20 years, our club has created a truly special event. Next year there may be a change in the date we hold the event, so we hope there will still be the good numbers coming along, as this tournament has been tremendous for the whole region.

ADVERTORIAL - CHIROPRACTOR CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS AS A NEW FACE JOINS THE TEAM “We saw an opportunity to come to Australia for a two year adventure,” Dr Benton Atkins said. That was seven years ago, and the now Mount Gambier based chiropractor and his family are more than happy to call that city and Australia home. “We wound up enjoying it here, and as the boys got involved in baseball and other things we decided to stay. Now both of the boys are engaged to Australian girls.” Originally from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Benton and his wife Mikki got involved in medical mission work in The Federated States of Micronesia. They moved with their two boys, Ben and Joe, to Charleston, in South Carolina. “I was practicing part time and organiisng medical

missions into Micronesia,” stated Dr Atkins. “But then the doors closed where we were doing our mission work and we saw the opportunity to come to Mount Gambier to run a practice for two years.” Now running his own business at 12 Eleanor Street, Mount Gambier, Dr Atkins is celebrating the family’s seventh year anniversary in Australia and their fifth year in private practice. It has turned into a double celebration, with the addition of a new chiropractor to the team Dr Benjamin Allen. “Having Dr Allen on board from March 1 means we are able to extend our availability hours to six days a week,” Dr Atkins said. “We’ve got a waiting list and I hate making people wait when they are

hurting.” Dr Allen brings with him 15 years of experience, as well as a wife, Katherine, and two young children – James (3) and Matthew (almost 1). He completed his studies at RMIT Melbourne and has most recently been working as a locum around Australia, including a stint in Mount Gambier for Dr Atkins in September 2015. “Since graduating I have lived and worked primarily in Adelaide,” Dr Allen said. But the lure of South East was always there. Dr Allen actually went to school here, moving to Mount Gambier with his parents, and attending Grant High School from Year 9 until graduation. “I loved living down here then and have been looking to come back, which has now happened and that’s exciting,” Dr Allen said. “When we came here to do the locum, it re-established what I enjoyed about living here – the friendliness of the place. It has that small town country feel but is big enough to have all the facilities, like shops, health care and schools. It makes it such a nice place.” The Atkins Chiropractic Practice uses primarily the Gonstead technique, which is a manual treatment. “We do spinal care and correct problems with spinal biomechanics,” Dr Atkins said. “We also treat a lot of sports injuries like shoulders, knees, and ankles.” The practice also offers exercise rehabilitation. “This is very important for strengthening,” Dr Atkins

said. “When it comes to the spine and joints, the muscles are the primary stabiliser. What often happens is patients get the injured area functioning properly but not stabilised. Exercise rehabilitation addresses the problem for the long term.” The whole family is looking forward to the February 27 fifth anniversary celebrations at the consulting rooms from 1pm-4pm for drinks and nibbles. “We are so grateful for the people of Mount Gambier for the welcome and acceptance we’ve had since we shifted – it’s been great,” Dr Atkins, who along with wife Mikki, has become an Australian citizen, said. CALLING ALL ROSE LOVERS

Lucindale Show • Yakka Park, Lucindale • February 27 Held in conjunction with the Lucindale Horse Show, the Lucindale Show showcases the best of country living with all the usual attractions like working dog trials, shearing, a ute muster, floral displays and beef cattle competition.

The Wagner’s Rose Nursery Open Day has firmly made its mark on the Limestone Coast calendar, with the event growing in popularity every year. It provides locals and visitors with the chance to learn more about roses, listen to tips by rose grower and owner Brian Wagner, and view the hundreds of varieties on offer at one of Australia’s leading rose nurseries. The family friendly day – to be held in April at the nursery on the outskirts of Kalangadoo –will this year be held as a fundraiser for the Penola Primary School, with students and parents throwing their support behind the event. “Last year we had such amazing participation from the Penola Primary School, with each class presenting a stall of their own, including a cake stand, sausage sizzle and drinks van, whilst the Parent Club helped out on the gate and with car-parking,” said nursery owner Brian Wagner. “Coupled with the support from local producers including Kalangadoo Organic with their apples and apple juice, Limestone Larder’s locally grown food and Gala’s Middle Eastern food, it truly is a community event that everyone seems to enjoy.” Following a similar format to its highly successful Open Day a year ago, when more than 500 people came through the gates, Brian Wagner will again host ‘continual’ tours throughout the day in a relaxed paddock setting, whilst also being on hand to answer questions and provide information on rose growing. The wholesale nursery - now offering online retail sales - will offer magnificent views of more than 600 varieties of roses in bloom, with early April being an ideal time for the rose display. It will be the first chance for visitors to see the new 2016 rose releases, while also viewing a large selection of yearling and two year old rose bushes. To add to the food stalls available on the day with be a wood-fired pizza food truck, along with Coonawarra’s Grey-Smith Wines, who will provide wine for sale by the glass and bottle. A selection of

potted plants and bunches of roses will be available for sale, and there’ll be plenty of entertainment to keep the kids busy including a jumping castle (weather permitting) for the younger ones. Wagner’s Rose Nursery grows more than 600 rose varieties for the wholesale market – spread over 50 hectares - and has recently entered the online retail market which is gaining popularity with its Paddock to Porch’service. It distributes a monthly e-newsletter to a growing customer base, and continues to build on its strong reputation as one of Australia’s leading rose suppliers to garden nurseries. “Whether you’re a keen rose grower, a novice or even if you just enjoy looking at roses, the Open Day will have something for everyone – come along, have a bite to eat, something to drink and just enjoy a stroll amongst the roses,” Brian said. “We are really pleased to be able to support the community who supports us.” The Rose Nursery Open Day will be held on Sunday, April 3, from 10am to 4pm, with an entry of $8 per adult and children under 15 free. Visitors are recommended to wear enclosed footwear. Wagner’s Rose Nursery is on 20 Koorine Road, Kalangadoo, just outside Kalangadoo on the Kalangadoo –Millicent Road, 200 metres from Koorine homestead. Further details about the event are available by contacting Wagner’s Rose Nursery on (08)8739 3321 or www.wagnersrosenursery.com. au or find us on Facebook.

‘SINGING BEATBOX’ SIGNED FOR GENERATIONS IN JAZZ Japan’s best-known vocal percussionist is set to bring his signature “beatbox” style to the Generations in Jazz (GIJ) festival being held in SA’s Limestone Coast from May 6-8. Kaichiro Kitamura creates distinctive drumming sounds using his voice as the sole instrument thanks to a unique breathing technique that leaves audiences baffled by the lack of musical equipment. A founding member of Japan’s most famous a cappella jazz ensemble ‘Try-Tone’, Kaichiro (pictured right) began beatboxing when he was in his early teens and was self-taught for many years before deciding to study jazz drumming. Six years later, after learning the drums from scratch, he returned to honing the craft of vocal percussion, developing his unique style primarily focussing on the jazz genre. Since then, Kaichiro has performed alongside instrumental and vocal groups across Asia and internationally. GIJ regulars The Idea of North (TION) are among his many fans, describing him as “arguably the world’s best jazz specialist in vocal percussion”. “Having studied and learnt to play the ‘actual’ drums is one thing that sets him apart from the vast majority of beatboxers and vocal percussionists, and when you hear him perform, his musicality in this regard is delightfully evident,” said TION tenor Nick Begbie. TION met Kaichiro in 2014 at a festival in South Korea and prepared several jazz tunes to perform with him during the festival finale. The following year, there were further collaborations in Australia at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and at The Basement in Sydney. “With TION’s love of and focus on the jazz genre, this combination of artists is a match made in a cappella heaven - Kai’s ability to sound like an entire drum kit is an astounding addition to TION’s impeccable jazz harmonies,” Nick said. Kaichiro and The Idea of North will again share the stage at the 2016 Generations in Jazz, where they will perform in front of Australia’s biggest ever jazz audience. “His musicality will astound, his skill

will amaze, and jaws will be dropping throughout the big top,” Nick said. “It is an exciting year for GIJ with Kai’s inclusion in the program, and he’ll undoubtedly be a favourite of the weekend.” Tickets are now available online via the GIJ website for the May 6-8 jazz music spectacular, which is also set to feature legendary brass instrumentalist Wycliffe Gordon, fellow USA artists Troy Roberts and Jeff Clayton, the University of North Texas’ One O’Clock Lab Band, multi award-winning Australian music icon Kate Ceberano - plus an incredible 260 Stage Bands and Vocal Ensembles across nine pavilions. Australia’s Mat Jodrell, Kyra Schwarz, Ross Irwin and Carl Mackey have also been confirmed for the event, and a majority of artists will host workshops with student musicians throughout the weekend. Audience members can purchase individual concert tickets or can experience the entire Generations in Jazz Festival by purchasing a Festival Weekend Pass (Adults $150, students under 18 $100) which will allow access to all public concerts on Friday & Saturday Night and Sunday Finale Concert as well as the City of Mount Gambier National Stage Band and Vocal Ensemble Competition from 8am to 6pm on the Saturday.

MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT

RIDE ALONG 2 • NOW SHOWING Plans for a quick trip to Miami go bad. With the wedding upcoming, James reluctantly takes Ben with him to Miami to follow up on a lead connected to a drug-ring case.

Former Mount Gambier man Ryan Sandeman is now well into training to run from Canberra, which he now calls home, to Melbourne, to help fund research into motor neurone disease (MND). Ryan (pictured left) has set himself a target to conquer 720kms over a two week period next month with the money raised from donations along the way handed to the Motor Neuron Research Institute of Australia. The disease claimed Ryan’s grandfather Brice Johnston in July last year. Ryan’s family carries a genetic mutation and his cousin, Njari Johnson, 39, suffers a rare and highly debilitating form of MND and is wheelchair dependent. “The run represents

my desire to support my family by raising general awareness of the disease, together with funding to aid scientific research,” Ryan said, He has labelled it Run 4 SOD1 after the gene that affects his family. On March 1, Ryan will set off from the Canberra suburb of Gordon, heading south via Cooma and Bombala, in New South Wales, before crossing the border into Victoria. Cann River, Lakes Entrance and Traralgon will serve as stop overs during his trek to Melbourne. Ryan is aiming to cover just over 50kms a day and is willing to speak to service clubs and community groups en route in a bid to raise greater awareness of the disease. Ryan’s journey has the backing of Motor Neurone Australia. Ten percent of MND is familial, with more than one member of a family affected. The other 90% of sufferers have sporadic MND. There is no cure as yet. Two people die every day from MND in Australia. Ryan is still looking for support to reach his $20,000 target, and you can donate by heading to his facebook page or website run. gofundraise,com.au/ page/SandemanR Ryan is grateful for the support he has received thus far, including the generous donation of a car from Bryce Roberts and OGR Roberts and a caravan from Whether considering options for yourself or deciding how best to help someone close to you, aged care is a complex Andrew Donehue and area and requires careful thought. INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT TO ATTEND SCOTTISH FESTIVAL President of the Burns World Federation, Peter Hughes, will travel from Scotland to attend Camperdown’s Robert Burns Scottish Festival in May this year. Peter will be the festival’s international guest and his visit promises to be one of the many festival highlights. Festival committee member Councillor Ruth Gstrein was pleased to announce Dr Hughes’ attendance for the upcoming Festival. “Dr Hughes is a keen sportsman, playing tennis, golf and curling. He is also a keen musician and a very popular After Dinner Speaker at events all over the UK with a particular interest in Scotland’s National Baird, Robert Burns,” Cr Gstrein said. “He has also had a remarkably high profile industrial career in engineering and steel and was awarded an OBE for his services to the UK Steel Industry.” The Burns World Federation was founded in 1855, and based in Kilmarkock it is one of the oldest national literary associations in Scotland. Cr Gstrein said the main objectives of The Robert Burns World Federation Limited were to advance the education of the public about the life, poetry and works of Robert Burns. Dr Peter Hughes will be the fourth Burns World Federation President to attend Camperdown’s Scottish Festival. Previous attending presidents include Jane Brown, Mike Duguid and Len Murray. For more information about the festival and other local Scottish events on offer check out the Facebook page Camperdown’s Robert Burns Festival and website www.camperdownburnsfestival.com

RECORD NUMBERS AT HOLIDAY PROGRAM Limestone Coast beachgoers have made the most of Natural Resources South East’s 2016 Coastal Connections holiday program, with more than 1220 people flocking to attend the smorgasbord of fun and informative events. Now in its eighth year, the program showcases the wonders of the Limestone Coast. Natural Resources South East program coordinator Tania Rajic said the program is proving popular and attracting a lot of repeat visitors. “Locals and visitors alike have been surprised by just how much there is to learn about the coast, and the plants and animals that call it home,” Ms Rajic said. “Some people we have spoken to have indicated that they planned their holiday to the South East around the Coastal Connections program. People are really keen to provide their families with opportunities to learn about the magnificent coast and marine environment we have in the South East.” A total of 66 events were held at coastal townships from Kingston through to Port MacDonnell. Activities ranging from guided snorkelling at Piccaninnie Ponds and kayaking at Robe, to Rockpool Rambles on rocky intertidal areas near Port MacDonnell, Beachport and Robe gave all ages an opportunity to learn and get involved. “There was something new to learn at each activity. What we really want to come out of this program is an understanding of, and passion for our coastline and the incredible array of life it supports,” Ms Rajic said. A wide range of groups help with delivery of the program including Friends of Shorebirds SE, Nature Glenelg Trust, each of the four coastal councils, Gambier, Millicent and Kingston Veterinary Clinics and Birds SE. Coastal Connections is a Limestone Coastwatchers project, supported by Natural Resources South East and the Limestone Coast Local Government Association, through funding from the Australian Government. For more information on the Coastal Connections program or to receive an email with the 2017 program in early December, register now by contacting Tania Rajic on 0467 739 211 or tania.rajic@sa.gov.au.

FINE ART OF DAIRY FARMING The first thing you notice at Graeme and Michele Hamilton’s dairy farm near Mount Gambier is the red cows. As the national Chairman of the Australian Red Dairy Breed (ARDB) that’s to be expected, but there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes.Graeme talks about his desire to share the “finer arts” of dairying with young farmers and his pride in farming constantly shines through. “This is a trade in itself; it’s a profession,” he says. “The amount of money even a modest farm turns over can compare well to prominent shops in the main street.” And, he’s hopeful the Legendairy communications initiative to raise the profile and reputation of the industry will help to better educate the community about dairy farms and the multifaceted nature of the work. Given half a chance, Graeme is more than happy to explain dairying to people. In fact, the Hamiltons recently hosted some international pharmacists at their, aptly named farm; Hamilton’s Run. “I told them about the grass, nutrition, feeding calves, the way the rumen works, fertiliser and water use. Eventually, Michele kindly patted me on the knee and said ‘that’s enough’. Their heads were spinning a bit.” Graeme was raised on the dairy farm at OB Flat, south of Mount Gambier, and apart from a few years training as a fitter and turner has always been a farmer. “I love being able to take the time, especially on some mornings, to look around and take in the nature,” he reflects. “It might be the trees, the sunrise, the fog or a splash of colour. It’s pretty amazing, and you need to appreciate the animals and the way they return the care to you.” Graeme’s parents started breeding red cows in 1964, long before the ARDB was formed, and he’s still passionate about breeding and improving the farm’s Aussie Reds. Hamilton’s Run has a 140 hectare milking area bolstered by run-off paddocks for rearing heifers and producing forage. The Murray Goulburn suppliers rear about 180 calves each year and hope to continue expanding. “Numbers have been building and there’s potential there for more growth,” Graeme said. The farm is self-sufficient for growing forage, mostly based on annual ryegrasses and forage cereals and, like most farms in the region, irrigation is essential. Dairy is a big industry in south east South Australia, even though the number of farms has decreased. “Today there are only about 90-100 suppliers but probably as many cows being

milked here as ever,” Graeme said. At 58, Graeme has seen more than herd size change over his time in the industry, even things as simple as carting hay have moved forward with new technologies and systems. “You might have done 1000 bales a day between two people. Now you go out and cart the equivalent amount in rounds or squares in about three hours and never leave the tractor seat.” The strategic use of nitrogen and other inputs has seen the farm’s pasture production double over the past few decades and milk production increase to a healthy target of 9000 litres per cow. Graeme would like to achieve more and says farmers need confidence and sufficient profits to invest back into their farms. “There are quite a few international red dairy breeds often seen as stand-alone breeds but they’ve all got linkages back to the red breeds of Europe. That allows us to choose the best genetics for our herd wherever we find them among the suitable red breeds.” He says the breed’s health performance is better than other cows. “They carry more condition which helps them go in-calf much better and they are more robust, so they spend less time in the hospital paddock. While they’re a bit more modest in the volume of milk they give, their kilograms of solids is comparable to other breeds which is important for our income.” Graeme has no plan to retire. Instead, he hopes to find a like-minded younger person as a work partner and train them in the “finer arts of dairy farming”.In the meantime, Graeme and Michele take time to appreciate the smaller things about farming, which in many respects are the bigger things, including Michele’s excellent on-farm photography. PET OF THE WEEK Can you give Sandy a bright new future? Say hello to handsome 11-month-old Sandy. This loving boy has had a difficult time at the SEAWL after he was shut inside a dryer during a break in our cattery two weeks ago. As a result, we are desperate to find Sandy the safe and loving home he so desperately deserves. Sandy is an incredibly sweet and affectionate young cat, and loves nothing more than being made a fuss of by his human friends. When he’s not busy receiving lots of cuddles and kisses, Sandy adores exploring the cattery and finding a warm spot to watch the world go by. If you think you can give Sandy a second chance at a safe and loving home, contact the SEAWL on (08)8723 9133 during opening hours or visit www.seawl.thelimestonecoast.com.au for more information about the adoption process.

sauce is thickened. Stir in remaining parsley and basil. Meanwhile, place milk in a saucepan and cook over medium heat for 3 minutes or until just simmering. Carefully pour into a jug. Melt butter in a clean saucepan over low–medium heat. Add flour and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until grainy. Remove pan from heat, then, whisking continuously, gradually add hot milk. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt, then return pan to low–medium heat and cook, stirring continuously, for 5 minutes or until mixture boils and thickens. Stir in parmesan and season with pepper. To assemble lasagne: Preheat oven to 180C. Lightly grease base of ovenproof dish. Trim all lasagne sheets so they fit base of dish, allowing a 1cm overlap between sheets. Spread 1/3 cup bolognese sauce to just cover base, then top with a layer of lasagne sheets. Spread over one-third of remaining bolognese sauce and drizzle with 1/3 cup bechamel sauce. Repeat layering twice more with lasagne sheets, bolognese and bechamel sauces. Finish with a final layer of lasagne sheets and remaining bechamel sauce, then scatter with parmesan. Place dish on an oven tray and bake for 45 minutes or until top is golden and mixture is bubbling around the edges. To serve lasagne: Rest lasagne for 5 minutes, then cut into squares.

CASH INJECTION FOR LOCAL TOURISM PROJECTS Tourism in Barker will receive a boost with the announcement of $175,000 in funding under the Australian Government’s Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure Programme. Member for Barker Tony Pasin MP welcomed the announcement and said the investment in tourism infrastructure would help attract more visitors to the local area and provide an even better traveller experience. “It’s great to see $175,000 going towards the completion of the ‘Cave Loop Trail’ at Naracoorte. This work includes a walking path between the below ground cave network and the planning and design for the upgrade of the Victoria Fossil Cave car park and cave entry precinct,” Mr Pasin said. “The funds are being provided through the Australian Government’s Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure program which provides South Australia with $3.99 million to be invested in local projects over four years.” Minister for Tourism and International Education, Senator Richard Colbeck, said the projects would drive demand and improve the quality of tourism infrastructure in South Australia “The Federal Government is providing $43.1 million over four years to the states and territories for their tourism infrastructure needs through the Tourism DemandDriver Infrastructure Programme,” Minister Colbeck said. “Projects will help the industry to meet Tourism 2020 targets to ensure businesses remain sustainable and profitable into the future.”

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - MY NEW TEAM ... by Robbie Tansel I’ve got a feeling that there is some sort of subliminal message built into children’s television programs that is training children in advanced torture techniques. I base this on the fact that Shaquille, my nearly four year old son, watches lots of children’s television and he seems to have mastered advanced torture techniques. In my sleep deprived state I have come to the conclusion those two things must be linked. Sleep deprivation continues to be one of his favourites. I’ve always thought that torturing someone by not letting them sleep couldn’t be that bad. That was before children. Before children I would stay up late at night for a variety of reasons and it was never that big a deal. I could stay up until four in the morning, get up the next day and get on with my life. I think the difference was it was by my choice and I obviously had fun things on the go that I was preferring to sleep. Now I want to sleep and I’ve got someone who is choosing to stop me. What makes his sleep depriving

worse is that every few months he’ll sleep through the night for a few days in a row. At this point Donna and I think, finally he’s got this sleep thing under control and our life is going to go back to normal. Instead, a few days later he’ll go back to waking up several times a night and ruining my life. I can see in his eyes he’s saying, “Na suckers, I’m not finished torturing you yet.” It’s actually worse than if he was just a bad sleeper all the time. He gives us hope and then he rips it away. Sleep deprivation does strange things to your mind. I find myself having the weirdest conversations. I spent half an hour talking with a couple of mates recently about how far down we pull our pants when we’re sitting on the toilet doing number twos. As if the conversation itself wasn’t bad enough, I discover that I’ve been doing it wrong for the last thirty five years. How’s that for a mind blower? I pull my pants down to around my ankles when the correct way is to only pull them down to just below the knees. Boy do I feel silly. Apart from sleep deprivation, he’s also an expert at messing with people’s minds. He’ll be yelling and screaming at us and behaving like a rabid animal. In my sleep depraved state I may respond angrily but he

has always timed it in a way that a stranger will walk past where we are standing at just this point and he bursts into tears. I’m left looking like a horrible parent and have to buy him the nearest chocolatey treat to calm him down before someone calls the Kid’s Helpline. The worst thing is that he’s cute so no-one will believe any of the things I say about him. He’ll make a great serial killer one day. No, serial killers always look evil and have crazy eyes. He’ll make a great lawyer one day. Just as evil as a serial killer but wearing a nicer suit. Water torture is another popular form of torture and interrogation. Shaquille has adapted this so that he can once again get what he wants. He doesn’t have access to water at all times but he does have access to another liquid

which he can produce on demand. Again, if he’d just never managed toilet training and was still wearing a nappy it wouldn’t be so bad. You’d be prepared for regular accidents. An expert torturer though will let you think, “Finally I’m finished with having to deal with someone else’s number ones and twos,” and then choose that moment to wet themselves while in a place, situation, or time where there is nothing you can do about it. He uses it as a way of getting me to take him home when he is sick of wherever we are. If I’ve been going to toilet wrong for all these years, what else am I doing wrong? Brushing my teeth? Putting on my socks? Long division? Email me at robbietansel@gmail.com if you are an expert on dealing with advanced torture or any of the above.

SOFTBALL Teenager hoping State journey has only just begun Not many of us get to live out our childhood sporting dreams but for Montanna Millard, who at 12 years of age is still enjoying her childhood, one of those dreams came true. The Demons softballer was representing South Australia in the SAPSASA State Softball team and hit a home run to score the winning run and ensure South Australia won the gold medal for the first time in 15 years. Montanna was also a critical player in the field at either catcher or third base during the tournament. Montanna (pictured right in action for the Mount Gambier Under 17 team at the weekend) was also part of one of the Under 15 Development State teams at the recent national championships, playing in all 12 games and again splitting her time between catcher and third base. “I had an amazwing time playing in both SAPSASA and the Under 15 team,” Montanna said. “I made so many new friends and played some hard, competitive softball. I really hope I can represent the State again this year.” Lifestyle1 will look at the State performance of Imogen Walker and Georgia Hood next week.

The LSEBA Champion of Champion events got off to a good start when Kingston hosted the Champion of Champion Fours for men and women. Mount Gambier, Robe, Lucindale, Beachport, Naracoorte RSL, Penola, Mount Gambier RSL, Kingston, Naracoorte and Millicent competed for the women’s title. Kingston ladies, represented by skipper Ann Ratsch, Dianne Scott, Pat Armfied and Maureen Starling, after having a bye in the first round, defeated Mount Gambier RSL and Mount Gambier then met Naracoorte in the grand final. Naracoorte represented by skipper Mary Kirkland, Diane Brown, Lynette Williams and Sue Drogemuller also had a bye in the first round and then succeeded in defeating Millicent and Port MacDonnell in well fought out games to gain their place in the final. The final started with Kingston having the upper hand before Naracoorte eventually settled and fought back with some good bowling putting them within striking distance on the 11th end. Kingston however continued on their winning way with excellent controlled bowling by all players becoming outright winners 16–7. In the men’s competition, teams from Kingston, Mount Gambier, Port MacDonnell, Robe, Naracoorte, Millicent, Penola, Mount Gambier RSL, Lucindale, Naracoorte RSL and Beachport competed for the champion of champions title. The winners on the day were the Naracoorte RSL team, represented by skipper Greg Mark, David O’Shaughnessy, Steve Hansen and Jon Buckley. They defeated Beachport, had a forfeit from Kalangadoo, and defeated Mount Gambier RSL, which put them in the final against Millicent, who had defeated Naracoorte, Penola and Kingston to earn their grand final position. Playing for Millicent were skipper Peter Scanlon, Steve Cannello, Bill Davis and Glen Schapel. Naracoorte RSL also got away to a good lead early with Millicent clawing back to be only one down on the ninth end but unfortunately Naracoorte RSL went on to win convincingly 26-9. The other Lower South East Bowls Association Champion of Champion events will be played over the next few months at the following venues. Ladies and Men’s Singles • Millicent • Sunday, February 28 Ladies Pairs • Lucindale • Monday, March 21 Men’s Pairs• Kalangadoo • Sunday, March 20 Ladies and Men’s Triples • Mount Gambier • Saturday, April 2 Ladies and Men’s Veteran Single •Millicent • Wednesday, April 13
