Community fundraiser looking to add to hospital coffers It was a tradition started in the late 1950s and the Penola Rodeo has re-emerged as a critical community event – providing entertainment for families in the region, while raising much needed funds for the Penola Hospital. In the past two years, since the concept was resurrected, the event has raised around $25,000, with the hospital receiving the lion’s share of that fundraising with donations of $10,000 each year. The remainder of the funds have gone to the local ambulance service, as well as local schools and scouts. The 2016 Merrett Logging Penola Rodeo will be held on Saturday, February 27. Gates open at 4pm, with a wide range of onsite catering, and live music on offer during the action and once the rodeo has finished. Organisers are expecting more than 50 rough rider entries, and also to at least match, if not exceed, the 57 ladies barrel racing entries from last year, making for another successful family friendly community fundraiser. “It’s a night to bring the whole district together” rodeo organiser Gordon Childs said. “It’s for the community or f Penola and the outlying districts.” The Penola rodeo, which re-emerged from a zero base three years ago, has been quickly built into a successful event, rivalling the tradition initially established with the 1950s and 60s events. “We pride ourselves on being a well run event that provides good old country community hospitality,” Gordon said. “We water and feed the competitors and it was become a well respected and much loved event, just as it was back in the early years.

things.” And only three year into the new era of Penola rodeos, Australia’s best riders, and many who also compete in the United States, make the Penola event a priority on their competition schedule. The 2016 event has an added incentive for competitors with the best overall cowboy awarded the inaugural Ray Crawford Memorial Buckle. The grandfather of Hawthorn premiership player turned media personality Shane Crawford, Ray was a popular and talented competitor in the early years of the Penola Rodeo. The Woodall family, who are the brains and brawn behind most of the region’s rodeos, are providing the livestock and horses for the February 27 event, which boasts all the usual rodeo events. And while the opportunity for local riders to compete at a rodeo and to provide entertainment for families, many of whom have never experienced the time honoured events on offer during rodeo competition, the major motivation for running the event is the hospital and raising funds to provide equipment and services that staff and patients might otherwise have to do without. The $20,000 donated over the past two years has seen the hospital auxiliary purchase low line adjustable beds that make it easier for patients to get in and out of bed and more safe and efficient for the staff assisting. Last year’s event saw the funds used for portable shower trolleys, another equipment purchase making life more efficient for staff and more comfortable for patients. “It has been a real success story,” Gordon said. “The donations have helped the hospital auxiliary purchase things to make the hospital more efficient.” The 2016 Penola Rodeo is a four hour program with a

short meal break, followed by the live music. “We want it to be an action packed four hour program,” Gordon said. “The event looks to provide a different source of entertainment for our town and district.” And, as always, there is a strong focus on the kids, with a Lolly Scramble in the main arena set to again prove popular. Penola is steeped in rodeo history and the 21st century reinvention of the event attracts some of the nation’s best in bull riding, saddle bronc riders and bareback bronc riders, as was the case back in 1959 when the first event was held. “It was a very romantic sport back in the 1950s,” Gordon said. “And there were many colourful champions.” Ray Crawford, the man who has inspired the new award, was just one of those. While he was in the Penola district he used to break in horses at some of the region’s major properties, including Nangwarry and Mount Schank Stations. Former Australian champion Chilla Seeney, who was a Queensland based tennis star turned national rodeo champion, also used to compete at the Penola event, as did five time all round champion Jim McGuire and the McTaggart brothers, Colin and Max. The support of the local community has been key in returning this event to the Penola

social calendar. “The support for this event through sponsorship has been overwhelming, from families and business and for that we are so grateful,” Gordon said. “We wouldn’t have been able to put the rodeo on again without the in kind and financial support.”

The 2016 Merrett Logging Penola Rodeo is set to be another great night out for families, as well as a lucrative fundraiser for the local hospital. It is also lucrative for the competitors, with the 2016 committee managing to secure hefty prize money to lure the sport’s best competitors. Tickets are $50 for families (two adults & two children), with adults $20; children under 16 $10 and children under five years old, free. LOCAL Portland skate park nears completion Portland’s skate park bowl is being poured marking the final steps towards the unveiling of the foreshore’s $700,000 Youth Activity Space. Glenelg Shire councillors and local teenagers today toured the site to see first-hand the construction process and to quiz contractors about the works. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said work-to-date included construction of a half basketball/netball court with the concrete rim of the bowl complete. “This Youth Activity Space has been designed by local youth and is tailored to their specifications and requirements,” Cr Oberlander said. “Once completed I have no doubt it will be one of the most popular locations in the shire, attracting young people from across the region eager to test their skills on this state-of-the-art skate facility.

“This project is a shining example of how local government can work closely with youth to achieve positive outcomes.” Contractors Precision Skate Parks and Redrock Landscaping are currently working on the space which includes a stage for local events, sand area for volleyball, in addition to a barbecue area with seating, water fountain and shelter. Cr Oberlander said the unique elements of the new skate bowl allowed for continuous movement, rather than the stop-start ramps provided in the previous skate park, which would allow skaters to further develop their talents and abilities. He said the project, jointly funded by the

State Government, had come to fruition in a bid to provide health and fitness activity for local youth.

“Research shows that young people spend disproportionately more time in public spaces than adults. It is all too common to see up to 30 young people at a time using the space after school as they wait for their parents to finish work or at weekends as they socialise with friends,” he said.

“It is important local youth have a safe and welcoming place to socialise. We know that if we keep our young people involved in fun and constructive activities they are less likely to become involved in anti-social behaviour in the future. “This project is just the start of a broader vision to redevelop our picturesque foreshore with improved recreational facilities and amenities including new playground equipment to further support our local community and growing tourism market.”

It is played at three golf courses, Kingston SE, Robe and Beachport. This 54 hole championship golf event is played at all three clubs for all handicap ranges.

LOCAL Local winner in Colorbond competition Fred and Val Hunter have had a strong working relationship with Steeline Mount Gambier and that bond was strengthened last week when the couple was named the South Australian winner for January as part of Colorbond’s GEN-U-WIN promotion.

Fred pocketed $2000 as the monthly winner and now goes into the draw for the grand prize of $100,000. “I never won anything except a chook raffle years ago,” Fred said, at the formal handover of the cheque, last Wednesday. The couple had the back verandah of their Mount Gambier home renovated with material provided by Steeline Mount Gambier – the conclusion of a long term project that has seen them work hand in hand with Steeline and Colorbond to update their front verandah, carport and side section of their house. It was the back verandah , though, that saw them eligible to register for the GEN-U-WIN competition being run by Colorbond until February 29. “We couldn’t be happier with Steeline Mount Gambier,” Fred said. “They were the ones that suggested Colorbond from the start of our renovations and it’s been a great decision. The service is fantastic, it’s a great product, and they really understand what we want and get it done on time and on budget.”

Leah Franklin, the face behind “just frank” runs her own vegan catering company online where customers can choose from her ever changing weekly menu, with the option to have meals delivered to your door. With a huge following on Facebook, Instagram and her online blog, Leah is bringing “just frank” to the Mount Gambier Library on Sunday, February 21, at 11.30am to share her knowledge in a free community workshop.

Whether you are looking at leading a plant based lifestyle or introducing meatless Mondays to your regime, Leah can show you how easy it is to eat super healthy the vegan way. ADVERTORIAL - Gardenarium Massive Summer Shade Tree Sale on now Happy New Year... and hasn’t it been an interesting one so far. The up and down weather has been a bit of a challenge for most gardeners but on the other hand it has given us plenty of opportunity to get outside and do some outdoor entertaining.

So, too, have we been given the opportunity to look around the garden and see where we can add some much needed shade from that harsh summer sun we have been having and what better a time after all that wonderful rain which has surely restored the planting spirit?

We always think to winter to plant trees, especially deciduous trees but the opportunity is not there to see exactly what part of the garden and home requires shading. I know I have just contemplated planting some more trees on the west side to cut the summer sun on the windows and help cool the rooms on that side. Trees have an amazing ability to be our own air conditioning and studies have shown the cooling effects of lawns and plants in so many ways and trees are amazing at reducing the temperatures.

Now is a good time to have a look

around and even plant a mature or advanced shade tree. These come in many forms from evergreen, giving all year round shading, to deciduous, where the leaves will drop in winter to give added light. Deciduous again, come in many forms, from mop tops, where the size is governed by the grafting and variety, so good for courtyard shade and smaller spaces right throughout, to lightly foliaged trees, such as silver birch, then to larger, heavily foliaged shade trees such as maples and planes that can give fantastic shading to large and small areas. We currently grow more than 30 varieties of mop top trees at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees.

Most of these are in our Summer Shade sale that is running NOW. Remember, too, that many of the older varieties of larger trees you may have been used to are now available in (dwarf) smaller or narrower versions, allowing you to have your old favourites in smaller situations.

The newly released dwarf plum varieties have been very sought after for their compact growth but abundance of fruit are now ½ price, not many people realise that these new breeds of dwarf tree produce as much fruit as a full sized tree but can be netted more easily and pruned from the ground. Several containers of pots have just arrived at The Pot Shop’s Mount Gambier store, with a huge range of glazed pots in new colours, including smoky blue, caramel, coffee and a new purple colour. Terracotta is ever popular and a whole new range at some rather interestingly low prices, at up to 70% off, has just been unpacked. The mighty strength of the Australian dollar when we purchased has allowed us to sell pots cheaper than five years ago and our outdoor furniture ranges are around $1000 less than last year. SPORT Defending champion forced out of triathlon Illness has forced elite Adelaide triathlete Chris Wigell to withdraw from this month’s Kingston SE Triathlon. A debilitating bout of glandular fever has dashed the three-time winner’s hopes of defending his title and claiming a fourth consecutive win, leaving the field wide open for a closely contested result at the February 14 race. The 28th annual event serves as the seventh leg of the Triathlon SA State Series, and Kingston’s 2015 Men’s Open runner up, Kevin Fergusson, leads a strong field of entrants setting their sights on the coveted Olympic Course title. A nine-time world champion for his age group and 22-time Australian titleholder, 56-year-old Fergusson says he has entered “at least a dozen” Kingston triathlons and has finished runner up on six occasions. “Most of the time it’s been the run which has let me down; as I’m getting older, I don’t have the leg speed of some of the terrific young juniors coming through the ranks,” he explains.

Endurance is another matter, with the Lakers Triathlon Club member also a highly successful ironman who recently qualified for September’s 70.3 World Championship in Mooloolaba.

Fergusson says he entered his first triathlon in 1992, and was immediately hooked. “I was still smoking and drinking then, so I decided to kick both the addictions in the 1993 new year to improve on my new addiction,” he smiles. In just over five years, he reached the top of the ranks in his 35-39 year age group, becoming Australian Triathlete of the Year. “In 1995, I started racing elite in South Australia and in 1997, I reached the top, becoming SA Triathlete of the year in the elite category,” he explains. Two decades later, he continues to race in the elite category in South Australia, and rates Kingston among his favourite events. “Even though its an ocean swim, it’s usually flat and quite shallow, so you can see the bottom and lots of fish which takes your mind off things,” he says, adding that

his key strength lies in the cycle leg. “I usually like a hilly course, but it’s really scenic at Kingston and the wind can often help me out. I also love the country atmosphere, and the pasta night at the footy club prepared by local volunteers is always a highlight.” Back-to-back women’s winner Sam Boag has confirmed she will return to the Limestone Coast next weekend to defend her title.

The 45-year-old mother-of-three posted recent wins in Port Lincoln, Franklin Island and Barmera triathlons, while also qualifying for QLD World Championships. Boag has her sights set on her third win in a row at Kingston, but faces some stiff competition.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY My new team... by Robbie Tansel I’m thinking of starting up a rugby league team. It seems like it might be a good way of not having to face up to any stupid decision that I make. I can do something ridiculous and offensive and people will understand because I’m a rugby league player. Rugby league players do fun things like urinate in public places and simulate copulation with dogs. If I was a rugby league player I could take nudie photos of myself and send them to people because they’d love that. You’ve got to be really witty and quite a character to be a rugby league player so I think I might be good at it. Maybe when I have my rugby league team I can do something funny like knock a grandma over and light her on fire. Boy people would think that was hilarious. I don’t think it’s that difficult to be a rugby league player. One thing I’ll have to do is get my neck shortened.

Rugby league players all have short necks. Considering that a rugby league player’s brain is actually closer to the rest of their body because of their short neck, you’d think that messages from their brain would move quicker to the rest of their body. Having said that, I don’t think the distance messages are travelling in rugby league players’ bodies is the issue; the problem is the quality of the initial decision. Scientists don’t really need to do much scientific testing to see that repeated hits to the head don’t do the human brain much good. They could just spend a day or two with a rugby league player. You may be a little concerned that I wouldn’t have the

necessary skills for rugby league but if you are, you’re misunderstanding what is really important about being a rugby league player. I sometimes think that their rugby league problem gets in the road of their drinking team. The main thing rugby league teams are looking for are general stupidity and poor decision making abilities. My fallback position if I can’t get a rugby league team together is to maybe put an Australian Rules team together. When you’re an Australian Rules player you get to do fun things like threaten to stab a woman in the face with a chopstick. Even though violence against women is a huge issue that society consistently condemns, you get a $2000 slap on the wrist and nothing much happens. It doesn’t matter that one woman is killed by a current or former partner each week in Australia or that one in three women has experienced physical violence since the age of 15. That’s because you’re a football player and you’re different.

If my current employer found out I did that they’d probably fire me. If I was an Aussie Rules player, I could have so much fun threatening women and then I could just say I was drunk and it would be fine. Sure we’d all read about it in the paper for a few weeks but you can’t read anyway so it doesn’t matter.

If everyone else at my club was getting injected with some substance that I knew nothing about, I could just go along with them and do it too. I wouldn’t have to make any decisions for myself.

I could just do what everyone else was

doing and not do any thinking myself. Think of how fresh my brain would me and all the thinking I could do one day when my football career was over. We could probably sort out most of the problems with rugby league and Aussie Rules players if we took all the health warnings off products.

Take the warning off cars that say, “Do not drive car in water” and we’re going to thin out some of the less useful genes from the gene pool. Take away the signs at pools that say, “Don’t breathe under the water” and this whole problem will sort itself out. LOCAL Focus on healthy eating Portland District Health hopes to inspire people to cook more at home as part of Healthy Weight Week.

A series of activities in Portland, including a virtual supermarket tour, dietitian consults and label reading, aim to inspire people to achieve a healthier weight and lifestyle. Health Promotion Team Leader at PDH, Lindy Stuchbery, said as part of Healthy Weight Week on February 15-21, dietitians are encouraging all Australians to cook at home more often to achieve a healthy weight.

Run by the Dietitians Association of Australia, the week is all about getting the right advice and support for those looking to achieve a healthy weight. Ms Stuchbery said research shows that people who prepare food at home are more likely to eat smaller portions and take in fewer kilojoules and less fat, salt and sugar. “This in turn is more likely to result in a healthy weight,” she said. The local campaign as part of Sea Change Portland is also happening with support from local businesses.

CRICKET South East goes back to back

SOFTBALL National selection for sister act The rise and rise of softballing sisters Amber and Georgia Hood continued last week with the duo named in the 30 man Australian Junior Women’s squad. Players in this elite group will be vying for selection in the Australian line-up for the 2017 Junior World Championships but there is certainly plenty on the agenda in the interim. Preparations begin now for the 2016 International Friendship Series in July in Blacktown, Sydney. Historically that series has seen Australian line-ups taking on teams from the likes of New Zealand, the United States and Japan. Australia will field two sides at the event, meaning both Hood girls will have a chance to impress at the prestigious competition. For Amber, 18, and Georgia, 16, a training program is now set to become part of their daily routine before they head to a training camp the week leading into the July International Friendship Series. The national call up is the second for both girls, with Amber travelling to Hawaii last year as part of an Australian Schoolgirls team - a team Georgia earned selection in this year. The team only competes, though, every second year.

Both girls have recently competed at national championships with Amber part of the Under 19 South Australian team and Georgia in the Under 17 South Australian line-up. Amber had

a strong tournament and was named as catcher of the tournament, while Georgia won the Under 17 batting and was named as the designated hitter in the All-Star line-up at the national championships. Georgia also continues to impress with her pitching. Both girls play junior and senior softball for Seacombe Tigers in Adelaide every weekend as they look to develop their game. The promised wrap-up of the national championships efforts of fellow State representatives Montanna Millar, Taylor Wilsmore, Jenna Burston and Imogen Walker will feature next week.

South East defeated Murray Districts/Barrier to claim back to back titles with McInerney (42); Dylan Clough (42); Matt Walmsley-Pace (28); Dion Stratford (25); skipper Robbie Drenthen (22no.); Josh Reader (21) all contributing to the imposing total of 229 before the ball ended up in Kongorong’s Alex Hentschke’s hand and he almost singlehandedly demolished the opposition, taking 6/33 from his 10 overs. Reader and Clough chipped in with two apiece as the South East claimed the title, dismissing Murray Districts/Barrier for 110 from 30 overs. It took a strong 15 man squad to complete the successful title defence with Drenthen again skippering the line-up that also included McInerney, Clough, Walmsley-Pace, Stratford, Reader, Hentschke, Jake Schutz, Jase Bateman, Kieran Ashby, Mitch Lewis, Jake McGrice, Luke Wiese, George Kidman and Nick Walters. McInerney and Reader were also named in the Team of the Carnival. Reader secured six wickets at a good economy rate and scored 46 and 21 in his two trips to the crease.

The Fun Run, aimed at triathlon competitors looking for prerace training or just those who are interested in enjoying a scenic timed run, will be held at 3pm on Saturday afternoon.

There are three distances available to participants including, a Junior race for ages 5-12 over 500 metres, and 4 km and 8 km courses for participants over 13 years of age. Entry and course details are available online at www.wattlerange. sa.gov.au/tourism/beachporttriathlon. The triathlon, now included in the Limestone Coast Tri Series, will be staged on Sunday morning. GOLF South East Veterans Golf The South East Veterans Golf saw 58 golfers head to Robe to try their luck against others from around the region. Having sold a couple of holes, players were interested in the new layout, which is now 12 holes, comprising six on the flat, six out the back and then replay the flat six. First civision was won by Phil Hunter, who was so far in front after 12, he nominated 41 pts as a winning score, and so coasted home with 41. Runner-up was captain David Douglas, on 40 pts, who had a lot of luck again, even waiting on the eighth for the wind to blow in an edge sitter for a par, followed by Harold Manton on 37 pts. Second division was taken out by Trevor Williams, on 42, then followed new member Peter Stojanovski, on 39, from the evergreen Jeff Ellis, on 36.

The next event is at Port MacDonnell on February 22. The AGM for the association is at Mount Gambier on March 14.

Registrations are only available online and there will be no entries accepted on the day. Participants are encouraged to attend a pre-race pasta night at Bompas on Saturday night, also a new inclusion in this year’s event program. FOOTBALL Sarah Allan part of Crows trial Millicent born, mutliState representative Sarah Allan (pictured in action during national championships in her junior years), was part of the weekend’s SANFL and Adelaide Crows trial which saw more than 60 aspirants looking to catch the eye as the bid to establish a women’s AFL competition starts to gain momentum.

While the AFL has flagged its intentions to have a competition underway for the 2017 season, just what the make up of that initial female league would be, is yet to be finalised.

Local Sport FOOTBALL Allen settling in to life in the AFL As the 2015 National Draft neared its conclusion in November, most people assumed West Coast would pass on its final selection of the meet. Having bolstered its midfield and backline stocks with three quality players in Luke Partington, Tom Cole and Kurt Mutimer, the Eagles’ recruiting staff waited with bated breath to see if a quality forward might slip through the cracks. West Coast’s diamond in the rough was none other than Matthew Allen, an imposing 193cm, 88kg Mount Gambier native who fits the mould of a modern forward: strong, mobile and clean with the footy. The former Glenelg star says his adjustment to the ‘big time’ had gone smoothly, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t without its challenges. “Footy is a fulltime job now,” Allen said. “The physical demands are trying; you are always doing something and on the big days especially you are training in the morning, have a bit of a break during the day, and then you are back doing some more work later. We have got great coaches and support to get us through. I’m absolutely loving it.” Teammates Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling have been playing the role of big brother to

Former Mount Gambier cricketer Patrick Page Jnr celebrated his return to his Tea Tree Gully club line-up with a match winning 73 in the team’s Twenty20 Cup victory. Page Jnr was in Dubai for most of January as part of Australia’s Under 19 line-up in a Tri-Series against New Zealand and Pakistan. The T20 title was Tea Tree Gully’s fourth in five seasons after they chased down Adelaide University’s 5/169 with three balls to spare. Page Jnr clubbed 10 fours in his stunning innings, with the rising star dismissed by Redback Tom Cooper with eight runs still needed for victory. Page Jnr was recently in Mount Gambier, before he headed to Dubai, and played in the McGrath Foundation fundraising T20 match that kicked off the 2016 Australian Country Cricket Championships at the start of January.

Allen since his arrival at West Coast headquarters, regularly pulling the 18-year-old aside at training to offer their support or a pearl of wisdom. Allen said while he needed more muscle to tussle with the duo, he was slowly learning their tricks of the trade to combat the competition’s best defenders. “The way they understand the game and read the game is incredible,” he said. “That will come as I better understand the game plan.

It’s not just understanding it, but applying it and consistently getting it right. That’s something I aspire to do.” While Allen would love to debut in the blue and gold this season, he is taking his development one step and one session at a time.

“I want to stay on the park all year and avoid getting injured,” Allen said. “As long as I can do that I’ll be out on the training paddock and will give myself a chance to play my best footy.”
