Long serving dental clinic moves to new state-of-the-art premises

After more than five decades at its Ferrers Street home, Ferrers Dental has relocated into its highly anticipated state-of-the-art facility in James Street and also rebranded itself as Limestone Coast Dental. The respected dental service had outgrown its 26 Ferrers Street home and also needed to update its equipment and consulting areas so relocation became critical. “We have always dreamt of a new building that reflects the quality of our business with the flexibility to improve and grow our service to the region,” practice principal Dr Helen Heaver said. The new architecturally designed surgery is a brighter, more modern, wellequipped that is on par, if not better, with any capital city dental surgery. Dr Heaver was born in Mount Gambier and was, in fact, school captain of Mount Gambier High

Phone

School. She played State League netball in Adelaide and after completing a nursing degree, she transferred to dentistry, where she graduated top of her class, securing all the academic honours on offer along the way. Dr Heaver racked up a decade with well-respected North Adelaide based dentist Dr Jonathon Rogers before returning to Mount Gambier in 2003, joining Drs Ian Ridley and Doug Castle in partnership at Ferrers Dental. It was in 2011 that she took over as practice principal in a succession plan for the surgery with Drs Ridley and Castle starting to work towards retirement. The clinic has also been fortunate to add Dr Catherine Dunn to their team in April this year, with associate dentists Dr Isabel Holmes, Dr Ting Ting Chen and Dr Lauren Gill, and dental hygienists Jane Bond and

Inge Potter, all adding to the experience and expertise now on offer at Limestone Coast Dental. Drs Ian Ridley and William Trieu remain as part of the team as visiting locum dentists and in January Dr James Waters will also join the Limestone Coast Dental team. Gambier Dental Laboratory has also relocated into the new premises. There are not many dental facilities around with their own in-house technical support for denture, mouth guard and night guard manufacture and repairs. “We are looking for this facility to be a centre of excellence in dental healthcare for the region with room for future expansion, and diversification of services to cover most forms of dental specialties,” Dr Heaver said. “The new surgery is a building that will serve the region for the next 50 years or more and

is a measure of our commitment to Mount Gambier and the Limestone coast region.” Limestone Coast Dental utilised the skills of local contractors for a vast majority of the build, with limestone and pine heavily featuring in the new facility. “Dycers have been great to work with,” Dr Heaver said. “The building is complex to say the least, in function and design. They have delivered an exceptional outcome, on time, on budget, we can thoroughly recommend them. We are extremely proud of the outcome.” You can check out the new clinic and all it has to offer at Limestone Coast Dental’s facebook page. Limestone Coast Dental is located at 38 James Street and you can call (08)8723 0230 to make your next appointment. Just remember 87 tooth-hurty, tooth-hurty.

ON THIS DAY NOVEMBER 27 • 1924 In New York City, the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is held. The three-hour Macy’s event has been televised nationally on NBC since 1952.

LOCAL Young ballerina takes her first steps towards a dancing career Halle Anderson is the fourth MJ Dance Studio dancer in recent years to be recruited by The Australian Ballet School and also the youngest. The 10 year old has been accepted into the International/ Interstate Training Programme (ITP) which provides training opportunities for gifted interstate and overseas based students aged 9-13 years. It means Halle will be heading to Melbourne whenever possible to take part in the ITP, which will give Halle the opportunity to train alongside a class of only high aptitude peers and highly regarded teachers. Halle’s MJ teachers – Maria Slape and Christina Jenkin – were thrilled for Halle. “It is an incredible opportunity,” Christina said. Aside from the elite training and tutelage and the social experience Halle will enjoy, involvement in the ITP is also a great introduction into the School’s culture and its unique training regime. The ITP serves as the most advantageous preparation for possible study in The Australian Ballet schools full time program, which starts when dancers are aged 13/14 years. Halle is one of around 300 students from across Australia and overseas involved in the program. The talented ballerina joins a select group of MJ dancers, which have been part of The Australian Ballet School program in the past years, following in the footsteps of Matthew Cram, Maddy Macera and Katarina Gajic. And if dancing as a career becomes a focus for Halle, working in a program at The Australian Ballet School is a great grounding for the future with both Maddy and Katarina currently in full time contemporary dance study programs, with Matthew having carved a professional career, including as a

dancer on cruise ships and a stint in New York. “I am very excited about this opportunity,” said Halle. “I would like to do dancing as a career although I am not sure exactly what area I will end up in.” And that is where this ITP opportunity at The Australian Ballet Scholl will come up, allowing Halle to explore her options as well as giving her an amazing grounding whether it is ballet or some other genre she chooses to pursue.

AT THE CINEMA IN THE HEART OF THE SEA • DECEMBER 3 Based on the 1820 event, a whaling ship is preyed upon by a sperm whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, thousands of miles from home. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath.

LOCAL COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER MARKET MOVES TO PLOUGHED FIELD

Portland District Health’s community market will feature up to 40 stalls in a new location. The market, this Friday, is moving to the ploughed field opposite the health service. The first market was held early last year on the hospital grounds and raised about $2500. The market starts at 5.30pm and will feature books, jewellery, soaps, food stalls which includes curries, BBQ, pasties, sausage rolls, fruit salad/ yoghurt, Christmas puddings, sweet treats, cakes and slices along with music and kids’ entertainment. Organiser and PDH community engagement officer, Carolyn Malseed, said the market would raise money for a variety of services. Each department at PDH will be represented at the market and will raise funds for their particular sections to purchase much needed equipment. “The market is a great opportunity for the community and PDH to come together to raise money to continue improving the provision of health care to Portland and district,” Ms Malseed said. “It’s also an opportunity to have some fun and support local traders and vendors.” Anyone wanting to be involved in the market can contact Ms Malseed on (03)5522 1182.

The day Louise came back to town “I’m so overwhelmed,” Louise Adams said, as she took in the sea of fans in Mount Gambier’s Cave Gardens. “My heart is racing.” And it was clear the X Factor grand finalist was taken aback and incredibly emotional to see the support of her hometown fans. As she made her way to the stage to perform, you could see her drawing in deep breaths and as she high-fived her fans and posed for selfies, her bright smile was interchanged regularly with a quizzical, almost disbelieving look, at all the fuss. Mount Gambier’s Cave Gardens was packed with thousands of people of all ages, some having laid claim to prime position from 1.30pm last Thursday afternoon. And while the X Factor train rolled into the concert venue later than expected, no one left, and no one was disappointed. From 12 year old Reidy Park friends Joel Bull and Ruben

Gustavsson, who have been watching Louise perform every week, as well as sending in their votes, to young eight year old Annabelle Steen, who is already taking singing lessons and could well be taking to the same X Factor stage as Louise in years to come, the crowd, which included family and friends, wasn’t going anywhere until their X Factor favourite performed. The confident singer, who has received standing ovations most weeks during her X Factor journey, was clearly moved by the local support and just needed a moment to compose herself – her Mount Gambier fans more daunting an audience than Guy Sebastian, Dannii Minogue and Chris Isaak. But a quick chat with amiable mentor James Blunt, who was also a clear crowd favourite, and Louise launched into her version of Lady GaGa’s Bad Romance. “You would think after performing all those live shows I would be used to this,” Louise said. “James has given me a pep talk – he loves pep talks.” James Blunt was happy to entertain the crowd with his trademark wit while his grand final star prepared to perform. “I wanted Louise to sing one of my songs but she said you would all leave if she did that,” he said, as self-effacing as ever, and in keeping with the same humour he uses to combat twitter trolls. Once Louise started strumming her guitar, though, it wasn’t long before her distinctive sultry, strong vocals filled the Cave Gardens. After three songs, which concluded with her stunning rendition of George Ezra’s Blame It On Me, her mentor James Blunt performed

two of his biggest hits – Bonfire Heart and You’re Beautiful - with the help of Louise and the star struck crowd. James captured the moment by taking a shot of Louise with her screaming fans in the background, before she performed an encore and mingled with patient fans – James also signing autographs and chatting with fans, who could never have dreamed of getting this up close and personal with an international music industry icon. “I’m absolutely overwhelmed and in awe,” Louise said. “I’m going to give you guys cuddles every time I see you for the rest of my life – thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Above - Louise takes to the X Factor stage in Mount Gambier’s Cave Gardens. Left - Eight year old Annabelle Steen was one of the thousands of fans happy to wait for Lousie to arrive. More photos on page 22 and on our facebook page. Editor’s note: By the time you read this, you will also know the result of the 2015 X Factor grand final. Fingers crossed our votes got Louise over the line.

New award recognises industry collaboration Portland Aluminium has been recognised as a leader in trades industry collaboration in south-west Victoria. South West TAFE has introduced a new industry collaboration award that recognises organisations and businesses that have formed innovative partnerships with TAFE to develop programs and strategies that meet the needs of regional industries. South West TAFE CEO said Portland Aluminium was a deserving winner of the first award. “We have had an extremely positive and constructive relationship with Portland Aluminium for many years and have delivered a range of courses including short courses through to apprenticeships,” Mr Fidge said. “We are extremely appreciative of their role in the Portland community as they are actively involved in activities ranging from sustainability through to leadership programs.” The award was presented at the 2015 South West TAFE trades awards night. Mr Fidge said that developing partnerships enabled South West TAFE to listen to the future training needs of industry and tailor training to meet those needs.

40th Anniversary for disablity support service A mural and a history booklet will be launched during a family fun day on December 1 to mark the 40th anniversary of Mpower. The Warrnamboolbased provider of community support services to families and people with disabilities was formed in 1975 after a small group of local families of children with disabilities joined forces to overcome a lack of support. Forty years later Mpower has become a vibrant and successful organisation in south-west Victoria working to a vision of ‘a community inspired and empowered by people of all ages, abilities and differences’. Initially known as the South West Region Support Group for the Handicapped and later the South West ACCESS Network (SWAN), Mpower has grown from a oneperson operation to an agency employing 64 staff providing a wide range of services to more than 800 clients and families across the region.

LOCAL Karate queen now a top ranked international referee It was back in 1984 when Alba Kraatz first represented Australia in karate, it was at the world championships in The Netherlands. But her work at the elite level did not stop with her retirement as a competitor 13 years ago, after 17 years in the sport, she continued her coaching and also started working towards refereeing qualifications. She set herself to get an “A” class national level and achieved that and so Alba decided to set her sights on gaining accreditation that would allow her to officiate at international events. She is the highest ranked South Australian official and it was in 2011 that her big break came when she was asked to upgrade her qualifications to World in kata, which is the form component of karate. “I didn’t do it them but It meant they believed in me and thought I was good enough to do it,” Alba said. And in 2014 she finally started the journey to achieve her world kata judging accreditation. It was a lengthy process and a tough one, starting with the initial selectio0n process of sitting a mock test to even progress to the official part of the accreditation. So Alba headed to the Worlds in Germany, where the gruelling five day process started. Of the more than 300 officials worldwide looking to upgrade in 2014, only 30 percent even passed their exams but Alba was one of those and after jumping through every hoop required, she was granted her provisional qualification so she could judge at the World Championships. Dauntingly, if you fail the assessment while judging at the Worlds, you have to start the whole process again but Alba had no need for concern – she was granted her world badge, passbook and certificate – the multi-bronze medallist is now a world kata judge. Her latest exploits as a world kata judge saw her heading to the Junior World Championships in Jakarta earlier this month to represent Australia, where she still had to earn selection as a championship referee,

with a similar five days of testing as she had at last year’s World Championships when she gained her provisional qualification. In the lead up Alba had to familiarise herself with the three other major style internationally aside from Goju Ryu, which is this style of the Seishikan School, of which Alba is a coach at the local school. Not surprisingly, seeing she has already achieved so much already in the sport, Alba passed with flying colours, officiated the championships and has returned with the highest possible kata refereeing qualifications – World Judge A. She is now set to concentrate on developing her kumite refereeing credentials. Kumite is the fighting arm of karate competition.

LOCAL LOCAL A ‘GROWING Ulysses riders revving into action for the kids GLENELG’ MISSION The Limestone Coast Toy Run exists for three core reasons. One. It creates a reason for men and women to tidy up their motorcycles and go for a ride with mates. Two. It demonstrates the fraternal relationship that exists in the Ulysses Motorcycle Club. Three. It raises a sum of money, and collects toys, for St. Vincent DePaul. The last reason is perhaps the most important. The Toy Run collects donations of toys and money to give to less fortunate families, so that they may a Christmas that is filled with a joy and happiness that all families should experience at this time of the year. The main Toy Ride will begin at 10.30am at the Shell Road House, Penola. However, if they wish, the riders can start from either Naracoorte Shell Road House or Millicent Library Car Park, or join the ride at the Mount Gambier Marketplace. All the aforementioned rides depart at 9:15 am and travel to Penola. The Penola ride will take the participants to the Marketplace, where, at 11:30am, they will depart for

the parade, which will be led by Father Christmas. It will begin on Jubilee Highway, then move to Wehl Street. They will travel down Commercial Street in formation, before turning on to Bay Road and ending at the Valley Lake. A BBQ will be supplied for anyone who wishes to attend the Valley Lakes portion of the ride. Up to, and possibly more than 200 riders will gather to ride in the main parade, which will surely be a sight to see. The range of bikes will be tremendous, Roadsters, Trikes and Spyders just to name a few. The Toy Run has been happening for many years now, each year hosting a bigger and better turn out. All money raised and toys donated go to St. Vincent DePaul and their efforts. They kindly ask that, if possible, people that attend the BBQ donate a small amount of money or a toy. However, they would prefer no small toys. By Jack Meaker

Glenelg Shire Council has launched a new logo which embraces council’s plans to support a sustainable economic future for our shire. A new Growing Glenelg corporate image is being used to highlight the council’s support of local business and industry. Glenelg Shire CEO Greg Burgoyne said the image symbolised council’s policy to support the local economy by purchasing within the shire where possible. “This logo is separate and distinct from our corporate image,” Mr Burgoyne said. “It encompasses council’s vision to broaden the local economy by supporting local businesses and industry, whilst further developing our local tourism market. The Growing Glenelg philosophy has been highlighted in council’s procurement policy which stipulates a minimum of 25 per cent local content in all projects. Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said it was important the wider community followed the council initiative. “Every dollar spent in this shire assists in strengthening our community,” Cr Oberlander said. “Small business is the backbone of our local economy and the shire is proud to be home to some of the best businesses in regional Victoria. By keeping our spend local it provides greater business confidence for our local retailers and industry. I remind people that every dollar spent in our shire means a job for a local person. This is why it is vital that people shop local this Christmas to help grow the local economy and ensure more employment opportunities for our community.”

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Fifteen minutes of fame... by Robbie Tansel It’s funny how things work out some times. I’ve spent a bit of time recently documenting my dislike for reality television. Last week I did concede that I could enjoy it a little more when it is relevant, like at the moment with Mount Gambier’s Louise Adams’ run of success. It became even more relevant this week with Louise’s visit to Mount Gambier when she spent a couple of days driving around in my Dad’s car. The X-Factor producers were looking for a vehicle that would suit the superstar’s style and settled on my father’s vintage 1964 EH Holden. This vehicle was actually purchased by his uncle as a new car in 1964 and has been in the family ever since. What amused me most about the whole thing is my father’s attitude

to his brush with fame. When initially approached to use his car he politely declined what many would see as a pretty cool opportunity. You see, my father is possibly the most fastidious car person in Mount Gambier and as for caring about musical superstars like James Blunt, well he just doesn’t really. Eventually he relented obviously, as his car was used. I thought it would be worth sharing a little about my father’s obsession with keeping car’s in pristine condition. My father worked in the automotive industry which might be where the whole thing started. As long as I can remember, whenever I have gotten in a vehicle with Dad he has said a phrase to me and my brother : “Keep your feet on the mat.” That might

sound fairly normal, but just imagine if you spent thirty years, and literally every…single…time you got in a car with a person they would tell you to keep your feet on the mats. Don’t you think that after the five thousandth time you’d said a phrase to the same people, you might accept that you’d drilled it into their impressionable little heads. Not Dad. He still does it now! I just hope that James and Louise kept their feet on the mats. Another one of Dad’s vehicle issues came about on hot days. In our family, we were forbidden to wind the windows down. “That’s not such a big deal,” I’m sure you’re thinking. Let’s not forget a couple of things about cars in the 1980s. They generally had leather or vinyl seats. They generally had no air conditioning. This made the whole winding the windows down thing pretty uncomfortable. I got used to my legs sticking to and melting on the seats. We wouldn’t have dared wind the windows down. As for that thing where the windows fog up and you draw pictures on them or write funny words…my life wouldn’t have been worth living. I hope that James and Louise did not wind the windows down or touch them with their greasy fingers. Going to the beach used to be a real challenge for Dad. On one hand I think he liked the relaxation of being at the sea, not at work, with the soothing waves crashing in the background. But on the other hand there’s all that dirty sand everywhere.

The way that Dad dealt with this conundrum was by keeping a dustpan and broom in his car. When we had finished at the beach for the day, we would put our bottom on the car seat but leave our feet hanging out of the door until they’d been properly brushed down. Those brittle brushes scratching at my little boy feet was pretty painful. And then he’d vacuum the car anyway when we got home. I hope James and Louise found the dustpan and broom and got their feet and shoes nice and clean before they got in the car. My father is completely deaf in one ear. Nonetheless he kept the radio at a volume where I couldn’t hear it with my full hearing but he could still hear it somehow. Noone would dare touch the volume and turn it up though. I once saw a guy with one arm and I wondered if it was caused by him trying to turn the volume up in Dad’s car, and Dad had to teach him a lesson. The other thing about turning the volume up would be that Dad wouldn’t be able to hear the rattles in the car. Remember again that he was completely deaf in one ear. On many drives in the car, Dad would say, “Do you hear that?” “What?” we’d all ask. “That rattle. Where’s it coming from?” None of us had noticed a rattle but Dad would inevitably put his hand on some part of the car interior and sure enough we’d realise there had been a rattle and now it was gone.We were never allowed to eat in the car. We would

have made a mess. Without fail, every car in the family was washed every week. It didn’t matter if it was still clean. It didn’t matter if Dad was sick. It didn’t matter if he was busy. It didn’t matter if it was raining. It didn’t matter if it was forty three degrees. The car was washed. I haven’t held onto this stuff at all though. I hope James and Louise enjoyed borrowing Dad’s car. I’m not sure they understand how lucky they are. I’ve actually never been in it. I’m pretty sure Dad’s still worried I’d break one of his rules. If you think your father might have been more finicky about his car, email me at robbietansel@gmail. com Maybe we’ll start a support group.

CASTERTON COUNTS DOWN TO CHRISTMAS Casterton is preparing for a huge street party to celebrate the festive season – and you are invited. The annual Light Up Night Christmas celebration is returning with Henty Street set to be closed to traffic as the community celebrates all things festive on Friday, November 27. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander urged locals to complete their Christmas shopping as part of the celebrations, which are hosted by the Casterton Business and Development Association (CBDA). “All of the local shops will be open for trade with great discount specials as the town celebrates this annual tradition, counting down to Christmas Day,” Cr Oberlander said. “The street will be filled with stalls, music, activities for the kids including face painting, a jumping castle and giant slide. “A highlight of the evening is the lighting of the community Christmas tree and fireworks display, which is quite a sight to behold. “Ensure you get your family down because there is every chance Santa will be making an appearance.” Celebrations begin from 5.30pm with fireworks after 9pm at Island Park. Cr Oberlander said it was important that people supported local retailers during the Christmas trading period. He said the shire’s new corporate image, Growing Glenelg, highlighted council’s procurement policy, which favours a local purchasing philosophy. He urged the wider community to follow the council’s shop local initiative. “Every dollar spent in this shire assists in strengthening our community,” Cr Oberlander said. “By keeping our spend local, in towns such as Casterton, it provides greater business confidence for local retailers and industry. I remind people that every dollar spent in our shire means a job for a local person.”

LOCAL Tenison Woods College brings a children’s classic to the stage A little bit of magic and copious amounts of glitter accompanied Tenison Woods College’s Year 10 Stage 1 Creative Arts – Musical students as they took to the stage to bring to life Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘Getting to Know You’ Cinderella. Over two days of performances at the Wehl Street Theatre, the talented students brought the delights of the stage to an enthusiastic audience of more than 600 people. The audience was treated to the dry royal family (Caitlin Rowe and Samuel Beumer), attended to by their servants (Chantelle Lawson, Jing Wang and Sophie Sutherland). Of course, it would not be Cinderella without the nasty Stepmother (Kaitlin Beltakis) and her daughters (Eirene Couzens and Faith Dushime) who took every opportunity to entertain the audience with their antics. Cinderella (Chloe Perryman) enchanted the theatre with her captivating voice, supported by her romantic Prince (Jack Meaker). The Fairy Godmother (Sarah Harrap) stole the show with her comedic interactions and commando rolls across the stage, complementing Cinderella’s sweet voice with her strong, earthy twang. Directed by Tenison Woods College’s Kirsty-Jane Wodson and strongly supported by Head of Music, Beth Creedy, the students created the performance during class time with individual workshops in their breaks. “This

fast moving, colourful play allowed the students to show their talents in many capacities, forming strong ensemble relationships and inspiring support for one another as they came together to present an amusing take on this ‘happily ever after’,” Ms Wodson said.

Local Sport SOFTBALL Six homegrown players representing South Australia There has certainly been a shake-up of local softball for the 2015/16 season but what hasn’t changed is the level of talent that has learned its craft in this region. This week, there are four home grown players strutting their stuff in South Australia’s colours at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide. Demons player Montanna Millard is part of the SAPSASA State team, with Amber Hood, Georgia Hood and Jenna Burston playing in the 17 & Under South Australian Schoolgirls team. That trio is developing their game in metropolitan competitions this season with Amber and Georgia playing for Seacombe and Jenna suiting up for both the Hills and West Torrens. Amber and Georgia, who is also still playing junior matches as well, have both been playing in the A Grade competition, with Jenna playing junior and senior competition as well. Georgia and Jenna are also part of the South Australian Under 17 team that will compete at the national championship in Sydney from January 3-9, while Amber will be joined by Warriors player Taylor Wilsmore in the Under 19 team at the national titles in Queensland from January 17-23. The SA team enters that event as the reigning champions, with Taylor having been part of that 2015 winning combination. It is Amber’s first year at this age level after being part of the Under 17 team last year. The Under 15 championships are being played in conjunction with the Under 19 titles and that will see Warriors pitcher Imogen Walker in action as part of the South Australian line-up.

At the recent Australian Masters Games held in Adelaide, the Mount Gambier Legends Baseball Club won its first ever medal at an Australian Masters event. Best with the bat were Daniel Kovaleff 3 hits, Peter Taylor, David Chuck and Nigel O’Brien all with 2 hits. Ben Green pitched the whole game. Game two saw the Legends soundly beaten again. This time by Sydney Tide, 11-5. Best with the bat was again Daniel Kovaleff with 2 safehits and he also pitched the whole game. Success came in Game 3 when the Legends were successful against the Sturt Bulls, winning 16 runs to 4. Major safehitters were Daniel Kovaleff with 4, Ben Green 3 and Peter Taylor, Ray Shaw and David O’Dine all with 2. The Legends were successful again in Game 4 when they defeated Valley Power 5-4. Only four safehits were recorded by the Legends, all singles. The rematch with Gold Diggers in the final round robin game was a repeat of game 1 with gold Diggers winning 16-1. Ben Green picked up 2 safehits. In the bronze medal playoff, the Legends were pitted against the Illawarra Snags. Legends scored a run in the top of the first when Daniel Kovaleff scored on Ray Shaw’s hit to rightfield. Snags replied with a run of their own in the bottom of the second. Legends scored three in the top of the fourth after safehits to David Chuck, Daniel Kovaleff and Ben Green. 2 runs were scored by Snags in reply with the score being 4-3 in favour of the Legends going in the fifth and final inning. Three base on ball and hits to David Chuck, Peter Manning, Daniel Kovaleff, Ben Green and Peter Taylor saw the Legends score 7 to give them an 11 – 3 lead. The Snags fought back with good hitting and a couple of errors to also score 7 runs with only one out $13,950 but the Legends defence held strong to get the last 2 outs to win by a solitary run for their first ever Australian Masters Games medal.
