COVER Fashion in focus at Sheepvention The Discover Wool Fashion event will again have its launch parade on the Sunday, August 3, in the Fashion Pavilion of the Hamilton Exhibition & Conference Centre. This fashion event has long been one of the headline events of Sheepvention, and the 2014 event commences at 5 pm with drinks and the parade to follow. This year there are a huge number of quality woollen entries in the Australasian Young Designers Awards, all vying for the much sort after prize of the Handbury Scholarship valued at $10,500 to the Instituto Marangoni in Milan Italy. This year the Discover Wool Fashion Event will feature stunning quality woollen garments from Camilla Marc, Country Road, Farage, MJ Bale, Ms Couture, Sabatini and Sportscraft. This spectacular event is far more than just fashion. The entertainment in the parade adds the wow factor and the theme this year is how fashion has been influenced by the movie and film industry. LOCAL Tour returns to region for third time

Penola High School graduate Natasha Hutchesson was the sole recipient of the 2014 Terry Roberts Memorial Scholarship. Home for a break during university holidays, Natasha was congratulated by Wattle range Mayor Peter Gandolifi. Enrolled full time in her first year of a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Disability Studies degree at Flinders University, The Terry Roberts Memorial Scholarship was established to recognise the contribution made by former Member of the Legislative Council to South Australia, the Wattle Range Council region and the Millicent

Cyclists contesting the Campolina-Fulton Hogan Tour of the Great South Coast from August 13-17 will be confronted by a challenging two-State course which will provide a true test of their all-round abilities. The 565km eightstage tour, first held in 2012, will feature four municipalities – the City of Mount Gambier and District Council of Grant in South Australia and the Shires of Glenelg and Moyne in Victoria. The five-day race will attract a top-flight field of around 150 cyclists and is a signature event on Cycling Australia’s 2014 Subaru National Road Series calendar. The tour will start with a 36km street race (criterium) at 11am in Mount Gambier on Wednesday, August 13, and finish with another criterium over 50kms in Port Fairy at 12.30pm on Sunday, August 17. There is some brutal terrain for riders to tackle in between those two flat stages, including a majestic 136.9km road race from Mount Gambier to Port MacDonnell on Thursday, August 14, the traditional Tour de France-like trek from Heywood to Casterton on Friday, August 15, and the beautiful Great Ocean Road ride from Koroit to Peterborough on Saturday, August 16. The course contains 56 intermediate sprints and 11 hill climbs, all offering special prizemoney. The Sprint Championship is sponsored by Independent Cranes. Queensland-based sports apparel company Scody has naming rights to the prestigious King of the Mountains title. Other special awards in the multi-sponsored tour are the Campolina Criterium Championship, the MGA Insurance Brokers Most Aggressive Rider and the coveted CFMEU Rising Star prize. Founded by Caribou Publications – one of Australia’s most respected sports events companies – the 2014 tour will be organised and promoted under the auspices of Cycling Victoria,

which will bring an accredited entourage of approximately 400 personnel to the Great South Coast region – in an off-peak tourist period. Cycling Victoria’s chief executive officer Kipp Kaufmann said CV welcomed the opportunity to be closely connected to an event which is on an upward spiral on the Australian road cycling calendar. “The Tour of the Great South Coast is one of those events which has something in it for everyone,” he said. “To win it, a rider will have to be at the top of his game over five days – in sprinting, hill-climbing and tactically, and he will need excellent support from his team. “It is expected that about 20 teams from all Australian states and New Zealand will line up in the tour. It promises to be a wonderful spectacle.” Western Australia’s hugely-talented all-rounder Anthony Giacoppo (Genesys) won the inaugural 2012 tour while New Zealander Samuel Horgan triumphed in a thrilling finish on a spectacular Lakes and Craters circuit at Camperdown in the Corangamite Shire last year. community.“Feedback from Flinders University has been very positive and they have acknowledged the value of this continued support from council, especially for first year rural students,” Mayor Gandolfi said. Council has been supporting the Scholarship since 2008 by way of providing up to five $1000 scholarships to assist students from the Wattle Range area to commence undergraduate study at Flinders University. In January it resolved to continue the annual scholarships in this format for a further five years taking it through to 2019.

LOCAL Plans showing the proposed location of Portland’s new helipad have been released. It is planned to construct the helipad between Sea View House and the hospital emergency department, with a new road and parking layout. The local community is invited to comment on the plan which has already been well received during initial discussions with residents and families of Harbourside Lodge and Sea View House. Portland District Health (PDH) hopes to have the new helipad in use by the end of the year. PDH chief executive officer Chris Giles said the helipad would provide a safe and efficient site to evacuate patients in need of urgent lifesaving care outside of Portland. She said the proposed site was perfectly positioned next to the emergency department and was the safest and most practical location. PDH is holding an open time from 3-4pm on July 22 in the executive meeting room for anyone wishing to discuss the plan with Ms Giles. The helipad does not require council planning approval but PDH is working closely with Glenelg Shire to ensure traffic and other considerations are properly handled. It will require the removal of 10 car parks from Bentinck Street, up to two Norfolk Island pines the power lines and some shrubs, along with the relocation of the flagpole and the whale pot. The car parks will be replaced on the hospital grounds. The helicopter will arrive over the Ploughed Field site and hover across to the hospital at about 100m above Bentinck Street. Traffic lights will be installed at either end of the street and will be activated only when the helicopter is arriving and departing. PDH has been working on the helipad plan for several years in partnership with the Blue Ribbon Foundation and the Committee for Portland.

LOCAL Local builder sets up community fund Make-A-Wish Mount Gambier branch has been the latest recipient of the generosity of local building company G.J. Gardner Homes with a $6000 cheque recently handed over to the hard working volunteer group. It is the second $6000 donation the Naracoorte and Mount Gambier business has made in recent weeks, with the Naracoorte CT Scan Appeal the other recipient. G.J. Gardner – Mount Gambier and Naracoorte director Rod Dohse said the decision to set up a community fund was taken 12 months ago. “We put an amount of money away into this fund from every build and we figured we would end up with a reasonable amount to give a donation to a community group,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to put that money to some really good causes.” Directors Rod and Meg Dohse believe they will be able to hand out a significant donation around every six months. Both the Make-A-Wish group and the CT Scan Appeal were thrilled to receive such a sizeable windfall for their respective causes. Naracoorte Health Advisory presiding member Barrie said it was a great to receive such a significant amount as plans are underway to install a CT Scan at the local hospital. “It is another humbling experience” he said. “The gesture is just fantastic and we thank G.J. Gardner Homes so much.” Make-A-Wish Mount Gambier Branch president Julia Serpell was equally thrilled to receive such an unexpected and generous donation. “This money goes into the kitty and is a big boost for the group,” she said. “On average a wish costs around

LOCAL New arts festival joins Sheepvention celebrations It’s new and exciting and set to run around one of Hamilton’s biggest annual events – Sheepvention. The Woolly West Fest is the brain child of local wool-craft artist Jacinta Wareham and writer Naomi Turner and will celebrate an eclectic marriage of wool-craft and children’s literature. Living in the former ‘Wool Capital of the World’, wool seemed an obvious theme for an arts festival, but they didn’t want it to be just another yarn-bombing event. Aligning the festival with sheep-themed children’s literature was the thing that finally helped the concept fall into place. Best-selling children’s book Where is the Green Sheep? was the gold standard for Jacinta and Naomi, and they were both thrilled and just a little bit daunted when author Mem Fox immediately gave her approval and offered to make a personal appearance. With the blueprint for the festival in place next came the finances and the duo was subsequently successful with a Regional Arts Victoria grant and the

project was no longer just a pipedream – it was a reality and it will run from July 28 to August 10. The cornerstone of this year’s event will be a flock of wool-crafted sheep, each created by and representing the key towns of Greater Hamilton. Each town in the Southern Grampians Shire was presented with a wooden sheep frame, handcrafted by the Hamilton Men’s Shed, and nominated a creative team responsible for wool-crafting their “sheep” using techniques of the their choice using the wool colour allocated to them in the recent Southern Grampians Shire rebranding. “There are a lot of underutilised people in our community who have these amazing skills, but never have the opportunity to show other people what they can do,” said Jacinta. “This project will help show just what a vital role everyone can play in revitalising our towns and showcasing what a wonderful

product we have here.” The sheep will then be rounded up by the mobile library and placed on display at the Hamilton Library in the week leading up to Sheepvention where a public vote will decide the winner. The sheep will then return to their towns of origin for the second week of the Woolly West Fest where their adventures will be posted on social media. But the wool crafted sheep are just one element of this initiative. A Wool Craft Walk down the length of Gray Street in Hamilton will be another major feature – with every parking metre and some trees yarn bombed using different stitches and

colours. The knitted and crocheted pieces will be labelled with the artist’s’ name, stitch, and wool used. And the business community will also be front and centre of the Woolly West Fest with themed window displays around the festival’s centrepiece book – Where is the Green Sheep? Then there’s the author readings by Australian children’s literature icon Mem Fox, as well as wool craft installations, activities and products in the Sheepvention Home Paddock pavilion. Recently Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group committee members Maxine Tuffnell and Karen Pertersen were presented with a donation from South East Women’s Football Association committee members Tracey Kourmouzis and Anna Cella. SEWFA has collected $2800 over the past year through events like the charity match between the SEWFA team of the year and the MG Force Masters team, where Vince Versace donated a $1000 on the day, and from the SEWFA Pink Ribbon Carnival held earlier this year. The Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group has raised money for cancer treatment and detection equipment, to increase awareness and for research and upgrades of cancer facilities in Mount Gambier and Millicent;

LOCAL Community planting projects a good fit for everyone

A new sustainable communities project is being nurtured literally from the ground up in Mount Gambier. Edible fruit trees are being planted on two local council reserves, with residents encouraged to pitch in with labour – and to share the fruits of their spoils. Neighbours from Dawn Court in the city’s east recently planted their own public garden with the assistance of three representatives from the City of Mount Gambier, filling it with lemons, limes, oranges, apples and a selection of stone fruit. Pettingill Lane in the city’s west has also started a similar project. City of Mount Gambier’s environmental sustainability officer Aaron Izzard said council put out a call earlier this year for expressions of interest to receive up to $250 worth of fruit and nut trees for planting in public spaces. “We received some really strong applications from these two groups of neighbours who not only came up with their own list of preferred plants, but agreed to look after them together,” he said. The Edible Plants Project is part of a broader civic planting plan, and is considered a simple yet effective way for locals to get to know their neighbours and help build a stronger and more connected community. It was endorsed by council early last year following the success of a trial site in the reserve on the corner of North Terrace

and Conroe Drive. “The feedback from residents was really positive, with some saying that it facilitated them meeting their neighbours for the first time, and the fact that one of the trees produced fruit in the first year was a bonus,” said Mr Izzard. Dawn Court resident Phil Clements co-ordinated the recent gardening session and said the local effort will have longterm benefits. “Betterment of the community is and should be of interest for all residents, and we hope that our endeavours will serve as a great example of what can be achieved by working together,” he says. “It won’t be a huge task – we planted a few trees, we got a bit wet, but the idea of people being able to go out into their reserve and pick some fruit in a few years’ time is a great concept.” The City of Mount Gambier is planning a similar program this financial year, and is likely to call for expressions of interest in March next year. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to track down or register existing trees and bushes that are ripe for public picking by referring to the interactive Edible Cities map for Mount Gambier online.

LOCAL Students rewarded for juggling work and school Former Year 12 students Imogene Ryan, Chloe Atkinson and Lewis Nankivell have been awarded a 2013 Australian Vocational Student Prize. The Mount Gambier High School trio took on the challenge of completing Year 12 while also undertaking a school based traineeship or apprenticeship. Imogene (pictured below) also took home the 2014 South East Secondary Schools Vocational Student of the Year. The Australian Vocational Student Prize (AVSP) recognises the achievements of students who completed their senior secondary studies while undertaking a vocational education and training in schools program or an Australian School Based Apprenticeship. Assistant Minister for Education Hon Sussan Ley MP said the prize promotes the benefits of vocational education and reflects the commitments of schools to making vocational learning a valuable and rewarding experience for students. Nationally there were approximately 500 winners, with 69 of them being from South Australia. Imogene chose to undertake a full time traineeship

Professor Martin has worked with local governments across Australia including those here in the South East on issues making our communities sustainable and resilient. The sustainability of our community is a primary motivator and challenge for local government leaders, and he believes that in order for our communities to be sustainable, resilient and prosper they must be governed effectively and well managed.In this presentation, Professor Martin will identify the characteristics contributing to the sustainability of rural towns and regional communities based on research he did in 2012 on Canadian communities comparing these with Australian communities like Mount Gambier. Professor Martin’s undergraduate degree was in ecology and natural resource management. This early training is reflected in the approach he has taken working with local governments. His subsequent graduate studies in public administration, a masters in sociology and a PhD in Public Policy provide the intellectual framework with which he has assisted local governments to determine their strategies and organise themselves to achieve their goals. Professor Martin retired in February this year and continues as an Emeritus Professor at La Trobe University in Bendigo. He is a Fellow of Local Government Managers Australia and the Regional Australia Institute.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY DTA - Dont’ trust anyone... by Robbie Tansel I’m finding it more and difficult in my life to trust people. I used to be a pretty trusting guy but more and more I’m questioning the motives of everyone I come in contact with. Let me explain. It’s mainly a problem with people who I want to buy something from. I used to think that they wanted to help me buy a product that would satisfy and enrich my life; something that would make this very questionable existence somehow more bearable. Now I’m starting to wonder whether they just want to squeeze as much money as possible from me. I hope I’m wrong. Maybe it’s just me. Let me run through a few regular interactions I have been encountering which have led me to start asking these questions. I think it started with fast food restaurants. When you used to purchase food you could just order what you wanted and then the pimply faced teenager would spend the next thirty or forty minutes gathering your food. Why is it called fast food? Because you go through a period of fasting while you wait for your food. But now they will ask you if you want the large meal. Obviously this causes me as the customer to automatically start questioning myself. Do I want the large one? Do I look like the sort of person who should have the large one? Do I look like the sort of person who generally has the large one? Occasionally I will vocalise the thought, “Are you saying I look fat?” It spread from there to retail. Remember when you used to be asked by the staff at the shop,“Can I help you with something?” I have no problem with that question. I can

easily say, “I’m just looking.” It wasn’t that long ago when the helpful shop assistant might say, “Well let me know if there’s something I can help with.” Everyone was happy. I was left in peace. When I needed assistance I could ask for it and in due course I would make the purchase I wanted. But things have changed, haven’t they? Some “expert” in sales techniques has now coached the manager who has coached the shop assistant to not just let your “I’m just looking” be good enough. They’ve been told that they need to ask further questions to try and keep you talking so they can try to sell you something. Even better, I don’t think they really care what they sell you. They don’t care if it’s good or not. They just want to get as much money out of you before you leave the store as possible. Do you know how I know they don’t care what they’re selling me: extended warranty. Essentially they’re saying, “We’re pretty sure that what we’re selling you is going to break down sooner than you’d like, but probably a few days after when your original warranty expires. So if you give us an extra couple of hundred dollars, you’ve

If you buy a car they’ll try to sell you the paint protection. If you go fill your car up with petrol, you’ll be asked whether you’d like to buy two packets of Mentos for $2.50. If you buy a plant you’ll be asked if you have soil to plant it in. Let me be clear, I don’t blame the sales people. They must hate having to go through their script as much as we hate having to listen to it. They know that if they don’t try to push whatever their manager has demanded, they could lose their livelihood and who wants to risk that at the moment. It’s left me not trusting any of them though. Are they really a nice person or are they just being friendly as part of their sales technique. Do they really think I look good in this shirt or do they just need to hit their monthly target? I feel sorry for those less able to see through their rubbish. Our more elderly citizens who are used to being able to trust retailers to actually look after them with a quality product at a fair price must find it challenging now that people only want to bleed every single dollar out of them. Anyway, the simple answer is don’t trust anyone. Including me. What do I know? Music, family and history are his passions and they have all merged in his film making adventures with the family band Brenton Manser and the Vanguards providing the sound track and sometimes the actors as Brenton captures the essence of a local history event or figure through film. He is set to premiere his third film on August 30 at Mount Gambier’s Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre – Riders & Writers – it captures the life and times of Adam Lindsay Gordon. But it was the Wreck of the Admella that started it all. “The story of the Admella for me started when I was little and used to go fishing with my uncles off Port MacDonnell,” Brenton said. “The stories they told about it stuck in my head and then Allan Childs gave me a cassette tape about the Wreck of the Admella and I was hooked.” A later interest in family history and the history of this region only fuelled the fire to look into this heart breaking story. “I was just totally fascinated with that story and I just couldn’t believe that those people suffered like that,” Brenton said. “It was a time when very little rescue or help was available.” And just like he has so many times before – when a story touches him so deeply, he writes a song. When the 150th anniversary of the Admella shipwreck was approaching, Brenton was part of the commemoration committee and he thought a documentary detailing the story would be perfect for the milestone event. Committee support was not overwhelming in the first instance but Brenton’s connection

with the story meant he pursued the project regardless. “I knew that Rob (Tremelling) was keen to work with me on something like this and I had been speaking to some local actors about being involved,” Brenton said. “What I decided on was an extended film clip for my song.” And while Brenton worked on his Admella film clip, the committee warmed to the idea of the documentary and in the end the two projects merged and Brenton and Rob’s first film making project was born. That was completed and aired in 2009 and there wasn’t much of a break before the duo then tackled Old Mary’s Ride – a quirky local yarn. And family involvement was again strong – not just on the music side but with son Jeshua providing some of the special effects through his self taught computer editing skills. He created the animation of Old Mary crashing into the Blue Lake as a 15 year old and his skills are at work again in the Adam Lindsay Gordon film to recreate the poet’s famous leap onto the banks of the Blue Lake. Each of the three movies has taken around two years to complete and self funded and the beauty of the projects has been not having to work to any deadline. “I think that has helped with the creative process,” Brenton said. “They have been done in our spare time amongst all the other things in our lives and family is really important to us all so I guess you could say we have certainly taken our time with each project. I think it helps us get the best possible results. I think if there was pressure from outside, pressure

to compromise artistically, as well as timewise, I don’t think the finished product would be as good.”

The Mount Gambier Indoor Bowls scene is in good health - a point well made at the recent State Ladies & men’s Pairs Championships where two Mount Gambier teams faced off in the men’s final. Wattle Range Council is calling on community, sporting and recreational groups to apply for funding in the upcoming round of its Financial Assistance Grants program. The first round of Financial Assistance Grant funding opened early this week with applications from eligible groups invited in three separate categories. The Community Financial Assistance Grants are aimed at assisting a broad range of projects and events in the Wattle Range area, with a maximum grant value of $2000, the total allocation for this round is $15,000. Meanwhile, the Community Sport and Recreation Grants are targeted at identified sport and recreation projects with a total of $12,500 available for applications to a maximum value of $2000. Funded by Canunda Power, the Environmental Grants assist in the development of environmental and healthy lifestyle projects and events. Canunda Power have kindly made available a total of $4000 for distribution to groups and organisations eligible in this category. Mayor Peter Gandolfi said the annual grant programs aim to help sporting and community bodies with their projects. “I encourage groups to consider projects that may qualify for a grant as it may not only be an opportunity to complete the project but also expand the scope of it,” he said. Grant program guidelines and application forms are available to download at council’s website www.wattlerange.sa. gov.au or by contacting council on (08)8733 0900. Applications must be received by Council by 5pm on Friday, August 15, and will be scheduled for consideration at the September Council meeting.

LOCAL Make sure you can have your say Non-resident property owners have been removed from the Local Government voters roll and must reenrol by August 8 if they are to vote in this year’s local government elections. This includes businesses, tenants and non-resident owners of residential property. Under the State Parliament’s Local Government Elections Act, the non-resident voter’s roll is purged every four years from January 1 in an election year. Residents who are on the State House of Assembly voters roll for their correct address do not have to re-enrol. Officials from the region’s local councils said people who wanted to vote for their council members must enrol by 5pm on Friday, August 8. Enrolment forms can be obtained from council offices throughout the region. “It is your right to vote and although voting for the council is voluntary, I would encourage all eligible people to enrol and cast their postal vote this year to have a say in how their community

Locals shine at national championships Three of Mount Gambier’s talented junior basketball squad, Lachlan Hunter, Tenille Gray and Brenna McKay, put in fine personal performancves at the 2014 Australian Under 16 Basketball Championships played in Geelong earlier this month. They joined more than 280 of Australia’s basketball stars of tomorrow in the highest level of national competition. The SA Country Men’s team finished with the sixth ranking of the 14 participants, probably a place or two higher than predicted prior to the championships. On the other hand the SA Country Women’s ranking of seventh is creditable but perhaps slightly below expectations going into the nationals. The form of the two teams over the week was contrasting; the men started slowly but then improved match by match, while the Women were most impressive early, but were unable to maintain this level as pressure mounted.Brenna and Tenille returned home with very impressive individual statistics. Brenna led the women’s championships in rebounds, averaging 16.8 per game for the six minor round games and finished with an outstanding overall figure of 12.6

It is interesting to note that thecChampionship leader in rebounds for the men’s competition was Samuel Waardenburg of New Zealand with a statistic of 13.1 rebounds per game, highlighting the impact of Brenna’s work during the week. Brenna and Tenille led the scoring for SA Country with an average of 12 points per game and in positions 9th and 10th in the overall competition numbers. Brenna also finished in the top 20 of the average assists for the championships. Lachlan was the quiet achiever in the men’s team. He played big minutes and consistently had a “fair dinkum” go, basing his efforts on defence and team structure. The 2014 champions are the SA Metro Women, which had former Pioneer Jason Joynes on its coaching panel, and NSW Country Men. SA Metro Women defeated Queensland South and NSW Country easily accounted for Victoria Metro Men in the gold medal games.

Adelaide cyclist Chris Harper has taken out the 2014 Alex Roberts 100 Mile Classic. The Norwood club cyclist crossed the line well ahead of his arrivals, completing the course in 3 hours, 58 minutes and 13 seconds, in what was the 78th running of the prestigious event, which moved this year from its normal spring timeslot to a July fixture. The best placed local was Matthew Opperman in 13th. Jacqui of all trades clocks up 400 game milestone Jacqui Cocks has achieved what few players ever do – her 400 game milestone. The Glencoe stalwart has been an integral part of the club for almost four decades, beginning her career in 1978. She made her A grade debut in her final year of junior eligibility and she has since played in every senior grade. An integral member of the Murphies A grade line-up for many seasons, Jacqui’s premiership success has come in 2006 as the playing coach of the club’s B grade side and in 2008 in the B Reserve line-up – it took 27 years to first taste that premiership winning feeling. Jacqui’s height and smarts have been her greatest assets over the journey. Spending the majority of her career in the shooting circle, Jacqui was also a more than competent defender and her ability to position herself to make life tough for opposition defenders, as well as opposition goalers, when at the other end,

have been her trademark over her 36 year career. Her intimate understanding of the game saw her possess clever timing and she always seems to be in the right place at the right time for her team mates. Her rebounding ability has also made her an asset at both ends of the court. Jacqui has also payed her role as a Mid South East representative, heading to the SA Country Championships in 1988 as part of the association’s C grade line-up. Jacqui is one of those genuine club people that all but lives, with her family, at the football club during the season. She married Robbie Cocks in 1990 and has three children Sam, Zacc and Abbie and Jacqui was able to celebrate her 400 game milestone with daughter Abbie by her side – the duo are playing together for the first season ever in Glencoe’s B grade team. While her playing achievements have been outstanding in themselves, Jacqui has given so much more to the Glencoe Netball Club than merely serving as a player, which was reflected in Jacqui being awarded Life Membership of the Club in 2010. Jacqui was president of the Glencoe Netball Club for four seasons between 2007 and 2010. She was the vice president in 2006, has previously held the positions of secretary and umpires coordinator and has been a member of the committee for a very significant period of time, certainly well in excess of 15 years. Jacqui has constantly been willing to put up her hand to fulfil coaching duties and has coached the A Reserve, B Grade, B Reserve, 17&Under, 13&Under and Junior 1&2 sides as well as being a Net, Set, Go coordinator. It would be difficult to find a year where Jacqui has not coached in one grade or another. This year, Jacqui continues on in that vein as playing coach of the B Grade side. In recent years, Jacqui has further expanded her impressive netball portfolio by becoming a regular umpire and obtaining her C Grade Umpiring Badge in 2012. She has also generously given of her skills further afield by taking on the role assistant secretary on the Mid South East Netball Association Executive over the past four seasons.

RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain said there are many laws and common guidelines on when to use the appropriate lights during dark, rainy and foggy conditions. “Our road rules state that a driver mustn’t drive at night or in hazardous weather conditions such as fog unless their headlights, tail lights and number plate light are all working,” said Mr Mountain. “Dark, rainy or foggy weather conditions can be quite common at this time of year, so it’s important to drive with caution. “Pedestrians and cyclists can be particularly harder to detect and wet roads means it also takes a longer distance to stop. “In foggy conditions, turn your headlights on low beam or use fog lights if you have them. Don’t put headlights on high beam though, as the reflection from the fog actually makes it harder to see.” Mr Mountain reminds motorists that you can only use your fog lights when you are experiencing the appropriate conditions. In other periods of low visibility, headlights should be used instead. “The law states that the driver of a vehicle fitted with front or rear fog lights must only operate them if they are driving in fog or other hazardous weather conditions causing reduced visibility,” said Mr Mountain. Headlights should also be used on low beam during darker mornings, days and evenings, and during rain. Daytime running lights (DRL) is a term that is becoming a lot more common and this feature can be found in many new vehicles as standard equipment. “The modern daytime running lights are Light Emitting Diodes (LED) which operate whenever the engine is running. They have a low energy consumption and are designed to minimise glare,” said Mr Mountain. “DRL’s can make your vehicle more visible to approaching motorists and pedestrians. “Driving with headlights on at all times also increases vehicle visibility, but it does increase fuel consumption and reduces headlight life. “Many vehicles activate headlights automatically in conditions of low visibility, but it’s important to remember that while these advances in technology are certainly helpful, you should not rely solely on them.”

Between 2009 and 2013 there were 1,793 crash reports as a result of hitting an animal on South Australian roads. RAA Senior Manager Road Safety, Charles Mountain said although animal crashes only represent two per cent of all crashes in South Australia, over the five year period they have resulted in 41 serious injuries and three deaths. “It’s no surprise that 86 per cent of these crashes occur in country areas, so it’s important for country drivers to be extra vigilant as a crash is likely to be a lot more severe if you hit a kangaroo compared to a small domestic animal,” said Mr Mountain. RAA warns that rural roads with a high speed limit are the most dangerous for colliding with an animal, as 96 per cent of these types of crashes occur on roads that have a speed limit of 80km/h or more. “Animals are more active at dusk and dawn, so if you can’t avoid driving in rural areas during these times – you need to reduce your speed and remain alert, particularly on roads with roadside vegetation that can obscure animals,” said Mr Mountain. These types of crashes also tend to occur during winter months when there are less daylight hours, and peak in July, so now is the time to be aware. “When driving in rural areas, although it is not uncommon to encounter wandering native animals and
