At 78 most people are content to take gentle walks around town but Portland’s Dawn Baudinette has had her sights on bigger challenges. Mrs Baudinette recently fulfilled a lifelong ambition when she completed a 1000km walk across Spain in 35 days. With help to prepare from the team at Active Health Portland, Mrs Baudinette successfully completed the El Camino pilgrimage plus an additional walk to Finnisterre across the rocky hills of Spain. Averaging nearly 20km30km a day in hot temperatures on difficult terrain would be tough for anyone, but Mrs Baudinette took it in her stride. “The day I set off there were 300 starting the walk at the same place at St Jean Pide de Port in France and I was the oldest,” she said. “I didn’t think it was that unusual at my age but other people did. I am very goal oriented and felt that I couldn’t fail.” After having polio when she was young that kept her in hospital for six years and forced her to walk on splints, Mrs Baudinette decided it was time to thank God for her recovery to good health. “I was doing something I had wanted to do all my life,” she said. “Age

wasn’t a problem for me - I wasn’t trying to prove anything; just go on a pilgrimage to say thank you God.” The former Warrnambool Primary School principal, district inspector of schools, Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education and Portland District Health board member, and lavender farm owner has had her share of health problems in recent years. These included an aortic aneurysm, two strokes, dislocated shoulders and loss of eyesight in one eye. After being told by her doctor that her joints were wearing out, she decided it was time to take the challenge. “I thought, I’m 78 I’d better go and do the Camino.” While she did a lot of mountain climbing when younger and remained fit with lengthy walks around the district, Mrs Baudinette decided a few months before taking the pilgrimage that she needed specialised help. “I was referred by my doctor to Active Health Portland which was the best thing I could have done,” she said. “They made a commitment to me and made a commitment to them. “They say I was inspiring but they inspired me.” Exercise physiologist

Shae Johnson devised a program to help Mrs Baudinette improve her balance, breathing and muscle tone, not only in her legs but in her upper body for carrying her pack. Massage therapist Alicia Roden helped to relax her leg muscles and relieve pressure over her body with deep tissue and muscular massage which Mrs Baudinette said was “the catalyst for change”, and podiatrist Rebecca Rundell helped with advice on footwear and general foot care.“We were working on a common goal and I know I finished feeling fitter than when I started,” Mrs Baudinette said. After getting soaked on her first day, Mrs Baudinette decided to drop most of her 14.5kg backpack but she wasn’t going to be deterred. “It is one of the best known pilgrim walks where you live off the land and the kindness of the people,” she said. “Every day I would get up and plod along to the next goal. “The best part was the people; I was amazed at the respect and compassion that people showed. “I will never forget the scenery and the fellowship and it was great to get back to the bare essentials of life with a bit of humility.”

Mrs Baudinette was joined by a friend for part of the journey and was also inspired to learn at one stage that a 91-year-old walker had started the course. Sadly he was unable to complete the journey, which left Mrs Baudinette as the oldest person on the walk at the time. “Even though I never mentioned my age once,” she said. Mrs Baudinette stayed in youth hostels and took `pilgrim meals’ along the way. “I told people I was walking on bread, water and wine,” she said. The temperature hovered around 30 degrees most days. “It was hot as hell but it was a dry heat so it wasn’t too bad,” she said. Mrs Baudinette was most surprised by the rocky nature of the walk. “There was a lot of ascending and descending but what really hit me was how hard and rocky it was,” she said. “It was different to my expectations. I have done a lot of walking but not that sort of distance.” Despite ending up with plantar fasciitis on her feet due to the rocky surface, Mrs Baudinette has no regrets and is already thinking about future challenges. “My feet are still a bit sore but I have no regrets,” she said. “I loved the total pilgrimage to Santiago.”

City Snapshot #18 MESSAGE FROM THE CITY As we approach the end of another year, we have much to be proud of in Mount Gambier. This Saturday 16th November, 2013 marks the annual Mount Gambier Christmas Parade, which heralds the arrival of Father Christmas and celebrates the beginning of the festive season. This special time of year is filled with family, friends and a sense of community; and is also a time to reflect on those less fortunate. With an ever increasing number of families requiring assistance within our community, it is thanks to the tireless work of the Community Assistance Network whom enable many less fortunate families to celebrate and enjoy Christmas. The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is now underway and I respectfully appeal to everyone within the City and district, to support our local welfare agencies during this important time; and to help raise our goal of $27,000 to assist those who have next to nothing. Many households will be hosting extended family and friends over the Christmas period and I would encourage you to make some time with your guests to spend a day or so as tourists in our City and explore what we have on offer. Mount Gambier is an impressive City, one we should be proud of, with a number of major works recently being undertaken; I urge you to showcase these developments and take pride in the CBD refurbishment, rail land demolition and former hospital deconstruction. MOUNT GAMBIER CHRISTMAS PARADE The annual Mount Gambier Christmas Parade is set to come alive this Saturday 16th November, 2013, heralding the arrival of Father Christmas. The day will begin with the brass bands entered in the Parade conducting a massed march along Commercial Street East from the Old Town Hall to Crouch Street from 10.15am. The Parade itself will begin at 11am from Crouch Street, proceeding westwards along Commercial Street, ending up at the Vansittart Park corner. The Council’s new float this year features ABC TV’s “Bill the Steam Shovel”, accompanied by characters Mr Squiggle, the grumpy Blackboard and Miss Jane. Afterwards, the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West will host ‘Party in the Park’ in the Cave Gardens precinct. It features a range of food, drinks, music and entertainment as well as lots of activities for children. Father Christmas will also be available to speak to children about their Christmas present wish lists! The Nationally renowned Mount Gambier Brass Band Festival will take place at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre concluding the Parade and is definitely a sight worth seeing! NEW PC BOOKING AND PRINTING SYSTEM AT THE LIBRARY

FREE PUBLIC HIRE BIKES Did you know that Mount Gambier now has eight bikes available to hire for FREE? Both residents and visitors can borrow one of the easy-to-ride bikes to take a pedal-powered trip around the town. Each bike comes with a map of suggested bike tour routes, which takes riders past some of the City’s unique attractions and landmarks. Cycling is a great way to see Mount Gambier; it’s quick but still allows you to take in all that’s great about the town. Better still, it’s great for your health and good for the environment! Three of the bikes have a toddler seat, so take the kids on a trip to explore Mount Gambier by bike. The bikes are generously provided by the City of Mount Gambier. The free public hire bikes are available to borrow from the Lady Nelson Visitor Information Centre, the Mount Gambier Library, and the Main Corner building. Come down and borrow a bike today!

The Mount Gambier Library will be installing Monitor, a new PC Booking and Printing System this November. This system will continue to offer the existing services, such as remote booking of the Library computers and secure printing and photocopying; with all transactions now using the customers Library card. Customers will also have the ability to send certain print jobs via email from their computers at home or from laptops or electronic devices within the Library. MOUNT GAMBIER COMMUNITY ACCOMMODATION HUB The City of Mount Gambier invites all homeowners and members of the public whom are willing to host visitors within their home during the annual Generations in Jazz event, to be held the first week of May, to be part of a new “Homestay” scheme. The Lady Nelson Visitor & Discovery Centre is working with local website RoomsHere.com to develop a listing of community accommodation, to be known as the Mount Gambier Community Accommodation Hub; aiming to help alleviate some of the problems associated with finding accommodation during the major event. Once the scheme has been introduced for the Generations in Jazz event, participants in the “Homestay” program will be offered the opportunity to opt in and out for other major events and might only offer their accommodation once a year. Please note the Community Accommodation Hub will only ever be an adjunct to commercial accommodation. Interested participants should contact The Lady Nelson Visitor & Discovery Centre to obtain an information pack, detailing the guidelines and necessary requirements to participate in this worthwhile scheme. Fuel reduction is one of the most important preparations you can undertake. The following are the minimum recommendations for fire hazard reduction: • For allotments 0.50 ha or less - reducing flammable undergrowth to a maximum height of 10cm by slashing or mowing.

Like most teenagers, this Tenison Woods College student has no plan B at the moment and early indications are this 15 year old might just have what it takes. Fresh from representing South Australia at the Christian Youth Football Championships in Western Australia, Sam now has his eye on his 2014 season. Fellow Mount Gambier player Jake Blackwell was also part of the SA line-up after both players caught the eye of selectors while representing Western Border soccer at the June long weekend State championships. However, your cooperation in ensuring that your property is adequately protected against possible fire outbreak is requested in the best interests of public safety. South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales go head to head over three days. And Sam certainly made the most of his opportunity to play at a higher level, scoring six goals in the tournament to be the State’s leading goal scorer, which saw him part of the championship’s All State All Star Team, which was essentially the best 11 players at the event. Playing under the coach for the championships was a huge boost for Sam, with the coach being one of the few B grade accredited coaches in Australia. The other outlet Sam is using to further enhance his skills, experience and reputation is playing for the Adelaide based West Torrens Birkalla Club and in 2014 Sam is a required member of their under 18 team, despite being only 15 and senior honours could well follow. It will see a huge change to Sam’s routine and a possible change of school with training twice a week and Saturday matches now on the agenda every week. Last year Sam played five games for the club at under 17 level and is already a proven goal scorer in the Adelaide

based competition. Birkalla is a premier league club and Sam has been part of the program for two years already. Sam has been playing soccer since he was six years old, starting in Sydney before the family moved to Mount Gambier and he continued his soccer journey. He has represented Western Border every year he has been in Mount Gambier and has a number of club and association accolades in his trophy

cabinet. Classing himself as a striker, Sam has also played a lot of soccer at centre mid and centre back but the bottom line is this is a teenager that just wants to play. He loves watching Cristiano Ronaldo play and admits he spends more time following the English Premier League than the local A League. Sam also spends his off seasons working on his game and has worked closely with local coach Scott Dickson.

new lease of life for community hall The Mount Schank War Memorial Hall, once the centre of a small community, has been dormant for many years just like the volcano at its back door. After years of legal red tape the site will now be given a new lease of life similar to the purpose it was first built for. The building was first used as a school until 1953, after which it was extended and reopened as a War Memorial Hall in 1957. The Hall Committee has accepted an offer which will allow students from the Independent Learning Centre (ILC), a Department of Education and Child Development entity and Campus of Millicent High School, to renovate the property under the guidance of experienced builders and tradespeople allowing them to gain training and experience on-site. The property will be renovated into a residence and then sold with all profits from the future sale to benefit Independent Learning Centre projects and to assure the future of its Building Trades Program. It is hoped that this may be the first of such projects. “It’s a “win-win” situation for the Community. Part of the intent of the original Hall Committee was to provide a place for instruction, and to promote and encourage the cultural life and the physical and mental development of the residents in the district and I feel this project fits the bill,” hall committee president Brian Collins said. “Not only will the unused Hall be renovated into a family home, its renovation will provide a place to learn essential skills for young people in our community.” Approximately 140 students aged from 1620 from the Mount Gambier area currently attend the ILC and it is envisaged that building work will start as soon as practical after approvals are in place. All memorial plaques will stay in place on the hall and the Independent Learning Centre will establish the perpetual ‘Mount Schank War Memorial Award’ and an honour board in recognition of the value of the contribution the property will make to the Independent Learning Centre’s Building Trades Program. The Hall was sold by expression of interest with the assistance of the District Council of Grant and proceeds will ensure the establishment of a new war memorial to perpetuate the memory of those men and women of the district of Mount Schank who served.

As for your reference to prophylactic devices, Lifestyle1 the magazine is able to be used as birth control as well just like the brand you referred to. Most weeks after reading my article, Donna won’t even speak to me, let alone share a bed. Along with all of my other areas of expertise, I am quite a gun when it comes to Sudoku. With that in mind, I opened the offending Lifestye1 magazine and sure enough it had more mistakes than a drunken text message to an ex-girlfriend. Apart from the ones you pointed out there were also two sixes in the third column. It’s not easy to finish one of these things off when they let the work experience kid put it together. As the official Lifestyle1 ambassador (self-elected, with no real power or authority) I have conducted a thorough investigation into this debacle and would like to present my findings here. Firstly, the person in charge of the Sudoku

has mainly been using writing the Sudoku as a way to subliminally brainwash the numbers of his phone number into local women’s brains. I’m surprised that simply telling chicks at the pub that he writes Sudokus wasn’t working! Secondly proof reading policies have fallen down completely. Lifestyle1 policy stated that the Sudoku had to be checked by at least three certified geniuses. Most weeks Stephen Hawking, Kim Ung Yong (listed in Guiness as the highest confirmed IQ in the world) and Terrence Tao (Google him yourself) give themselves some mental exercise on the Sudoku. Unfortunately this week someone thought it would be more fun to let the monkey they’ve been training at the office have a crack. Apparently the training is not going as well as they thought. Things got so out of control that the solution to the Sudoku was actually printed up the right way, instead of upside down. Having it upside down is the only reason people don’t simply cheat. Quite clearly we were in an unprecedented period of Lifestyle1 anarchy. Anyway, Daniel, rest assured that the problem has been thoroughly dealt with and

will not happen again. As a consequence expect to find a Sudoku book in the mail heading your direction this week. Maybe you better e-mail Lifestyle1 with your postal address and tell them I said they had to send you a Sudoku book. Unfortunately a head did have to roll. It’s been a tough couple of months for Mr Rudd but we won’t be tolerating this sort of incompetence any more than the people of Australia did. Edgarley Home Incorporated at Casterton needs $200,000 for essential equipment to ensure the ongoing high standards of care for its residents. “The reality is that government funding is just not keeping pace with the increasing demand in our region for aged care,” said Edgarley board of management chair, Andrew Speirs. “And more and more of the limited funding available is going into services that help keep the elderly in their own homes. option is a place like Edgarley where they not only receive excellent care but they escape the very real issue of social isolation. “Being at Edgarley where they enjoy daily interaction with staff and other residents, and all the people that visit, can make a huge difference to someone’s happiness and

quality of life.” Established in 1955 as a not-for-profit organization with just eight residents in a single house, Edgarley today has 23 independent living units and can cater for up to 43 residents. It serves an area stretching from Hamilton and Portland to Edenhope and Mount Gambier, with current residents coming from as far as Adelaide and Ararat. Apart from providing essential services, it is also one of the Casterton area’s largest employers, with 55 full and part-time staff, and injects millions of dollars into the local economy through salaries, and the purchase of goods and services. Edgarley chief executive Steve Toope said making people more aware of this

significant contribution and the wide geographic area that the facility serves was an important part of the fundraising campaign which will run over six months. Mr Toope said it was important to stress that all the money raised would go to essential new equipment. “In fact, we have put together a list to show people exactly what we need and how much each item costs,” he said. “They can even nominate precisely where they want their money spent. “People really seem to appreciate that approach. “Our first donations have already come in from people who have put their name down to buy specific pieces of equipment.” Mr Toope said people may be surprised just how much some of the equipment cost. “Equipment for the aged care sector is highly specialised and expensive, and we do not get any government funding to help purchase it,” he said. “For example, what is known as a Princess chair, a fully adjustable chair designed to reduce pressure on the body, costs as much as $2200. “But we need this equipment to keep pace with modern technology and maintain the level of care that is required for accreditation. Every now and again, though, a nod from your industry peers that you are at the cutting edge and producing top quality work doesn’t hurt and Millicent based Klas Bilt recently received the ultimate pat on the back. Mike Reilly and his team were honoured at the Housing Industry Australia (HIA) South Australian Awards, having produced the best renovated kitchen project in the $45,001$55,000 range. For Mike it was just reward for a challenging project - transforming an 80s style kitchen into a functional, modern space, catering to the wide ranging needs of a growing family. “Upon our initial meet and measure appointment, our clients wanted to brighten up the old kitchen as it was a long narrow room with solid Jarrah doors and drawers,” Mike said. “The area had almost no natural light, making for a very dark room with a lot of wasted space which we needed to put to

better use.” For Mike, the challenge was maintaining the old world charm of the space while providing a modern facility that still blended with the rest of the home. As with all projects of this magnitude and scope, Mike and the team were able to put together a number of concepts for the clients as a starting point for the makeover. The radical transformation involved enlarging the existing kitchen window and servery area, as well as the removing of a wall

to merge the kitchen and dining areas but those concepts needed the stamp of approval from a builder. “A builder was contacted and the idea became reality.,” Mike said. “This allowed for a more modern style, open plan living area that brightened up the rooms considerably. “This also provided an area to entertain and gather around with family and friends, another important aspect of our clients brief.” Once the

design was finalised, Klas Bilt then met with the participating tradies to map out the way forward for the major renovation, with Mike making sure he was liaising with the client every step of the process. A stand out feature in the kitchen is the beautifully crafted double sided island bench with a huge amount of storage space perfect for food preparation and entertaining alike.The Mike Reilly designed kitchen is both innovative and functional - two key cornerstones on which Mike builds all his projects, whether from scratch or as part of a renovation. STATE AWARD FOR MILLICENT’S KLAS BILT There is no better marketing than word of mouth - Shelley Williams is one of those satisfied customers, who has seen her dream become a reality through the efforts of Klas Bilt. “I called Mike at Klas Bilt to come and look at our existing 80’s style kitchen and give us some ideas about remodelling. Our existing kitchen was very dark with feature brick walls, dark slate tiled floor and rich Jarrah timber kitchen doors. The main thing I wanted to do was to lighten the room up. Initially I was basically going to just replace the dark kitchen with a lighter brighter version. However I definitely didn’t want the modern two pack painted style or vinyl wrap. After many discussions with Mike and three totally different plans later we decided to completely change the look not only by brightening up but by replacing the floor with lighter tiles and removing the existing double brick wall between the kitchen and a recently built extension. After having a large walk in corner pantry that I thought was a big waste of space, I wanted a different look in that corner of the kitchen. I wanted it to be more practical and family friendly with more bench space. Much more bench space was definitely my main requirement. I

also wanted the kitchen to link other living areas of our home together.The kitchen wall had to be removed. This had been an exterior wall so extra support to the trusses had to be undertaken. We also had to move the sink over to the island bench so the concrete needed to be cut and pipes moved. A power point in my kitchen was supposed to have been moved closer to my oven but due to some dodgy electrical work 20 years ago the wires were unable to be moved. I was worried

that a power point that had been above my bench in the old kitchen was now in the middle of a wall and would look out of place. We decided to use modern glass power points and highlight them instead of trying to hide them. I think they are now a bit of a feature. The power point I had cursed has actually come in quite handy! The corner that had been my pantry area is now very useful with the microwave, kettle and toaster all being together. Ease of use, all the mess in one place,

easier to clean up as well. I really like the way that Mike at Klas Bilt has given us a modern style kitchen without losing the country style that I wanted. I love the old world charm with the modern side including the splash backs and glass power points. I have plenty of bench space and an abundance of storage areas. Volunteers are the lifeblood of every regional community. People willingly giving of their time and sharing their skills and expertise and sheer willingness to work hard to help run a sporting competition or organise an art exhibition or raise money for charity. Some volunteers are ready made, while others would love to donate their time and energy but aren’t quite

The service is centred in Naracoorte and run by Brand South Australia Community Individual Award finalist Jan Bittner, providing resource, information and training for the entire region. Naracoorte is the ideal central location for the centre’s operations but there are information hubs in each council area – the Bordertown Library, Millicent Library, Mount Gambier Civic Centre, Port MacDonnell Rural Transaction Centre and the Robe Visitor Information Centre and Library. The Limestone Coast Volunteer Service is part of a State and national network of volunteer centres which work in partnership with Local State and Federal Governments to deliver support to the volunteer sector. The service promotes the role of volunteering in the community emphasising the need for, and the rewards of, being a volunteer worker for community organisations, with the mantra of providing a regional resource where people interested in voluntary work can source suitable volunteer work. Organisations can also use the service to recruit volunteers and it offers consultation and support whilst promoting best practice in volunteering and

volunteer management. One of the projects highlighted in the awards submission was the Naracoorte Lucindale Community Care Network that provides emergency food relief for disadvantaged families – a community project that grew out of the Salvation Army having to leave the region. The network has assisted more than 70 families in the past 12 months but that is just one of many programs, the service supports. Limestone Coast Volunteer Service recruits, interviews, and refers volunteers to community organisations as it looks to match the skills and interests of volunteers with those required by organisations. Training is also a huge part of the service’s role, providing resources to organisations and volunteers. The service also issue quarterly newsletters keeping volunteers and organisations informed of current issues and in touch with national and international information at hand. MOTORSPORT England The 2013 Millicent Sand Buggy Club David Larter Memorial Day/Night Enduro saw the pairing of Jake and Murray England secure a narrow outright victory over Millicent pairing Dean Russ and Peter Joblonsk. The event was the final round of the Millicent Sand Buggy Club Off Road challenge. The David Larter Memorial is the only off road race in Australia that is held both during the day and at night, bringing many competitors from away who have indicated they are eager to come back and race again next year. The race comprised of two five lap 15km per lap sections in the day and then again at night. The day section started at 5pm with visiting drivers Daryl Nissen and Andrew Harness finishing on top for the day section ahead of second place Ivan Schmocker and Matthew Salt by one minute and 52 seconds. Heading the local competitors were Murray and Jake England, finishing the day section in foutth place eight minutes and 11 seconds behind the leader.

ATHLETICS State

The night section got away at 9pm and proved to be a challenge for some drivers who hadn’t experienced night racing. James Madden was out in front in his chev powered Razorback, with locals Murray and Jake England setting the pace early. After one lap they locked horns with local Millicent crew of Dean Russ and Peter Joblonski and this proved to be an exciting battle. After five laps only seconds separated England and Russ with the England pair crossing the line first. Not only finishing their night off with a great tussle but also coming home with the outright win with a combined time of two hours 45 minutes total

race time, one minute and 21 seconds ahead of second place Chris and Colin Johnson and only 10 seconds back was Russ and Joblonski in third. Members of the Mt Gambier District Athletics Club recently competed for their school at Santos Stadium in Adelaide at the Viv Sports State All School Games with gold and silver medalists eligible to enter the National All Schools Championships in Townsville in December. The competing athletes brought home a swag of medals, with Isobel Redemski and Imogen Hardacre both doing well at thier first Athletics SA competition. Isobel ran strong sprints in both the girls under 14 100 and 200m preliminaries to make the finals in both, whilst Imogen competed in the under 18 girls 100, 200 and 400 metres making the finals in the 200m and 400 metre sprints. It was the more experienced athlets from the group who medalled with Olivia Dukalskis jumping well in the under 14 high and long jump, receiving silver medals in both and also coming fourth in the triple jump. James Dukalskis took out the gold medal in the under 16 boys high jump, jumping 1.90 metres and finished fourth in the

Casey Donehue secured the most medals, making the finals as an underage competitor in the under 18 girls 100m, 200m and taking out silver in the under 18 high jump, jumping 1.58 metres, silver in the triple jump and bronze in the under 18 long jump, James is the only member of the squad to take up the National All Schools Selection which will be held in Townsville in December, with Casey and Olivia unavailable due to other sporting committments. Mount Gambier & District Little Athletics member Shylah Fosdike competed strongly for Allendale East Area School finishing 20th in

the under 14 100m as an underage competitor and in an impressive performance making the final of the under 14 200 and finishing seventh. Both James and Casey are heading to school in Adelaide next year in a bid to pursue their sporting ambitions, with both receiving scholarships. James will be heading to St Peters College and Casey to Westminster School. MOTORSPORT Gazzard Local hope Peter Gazzard (main photo) beat the clock to even line up to compete in the 2013 Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb and while he looked like cruising to a fifth victory at his home event, there was another twist in the tale. In Gazzard’s eighth run up the Valley Lake hill, he set a new race record of 50.99, giving the Mount Gambier driver the eight fastest times in the competition. But he knew his long time rival and three time winner of the Legend of the Lakes, Kevin Mackrell (below), would have a trick up his sleeve and he did - he vastly improved his time, posting a 51.20 to

Eleanor McClintock completely dominated the Demons batters, not allowing a safe hit and recording four strike outs over the five innings pitched. Warriors themselves only had six safe hits, however took full advantage of these hits combined with some fielding errors to score consistently over the course of the game.
