fresh start for Burmese refugees

Twelve refugees seeking a new life in Australia have found a home and freedom at Tantanoola. The refugees are now working at the award winning herb company, Holla Fresh. The company grows, harvests and packs culinary herbs, which are then sold to major Australian supermarkets. One of the refugees is Kar May Lar, or Camilla as she now calls herself. Camilla spent 20 years of her life behind barbed wire in a Thai refugee camp, having fled the Burmese military at age 22. Her life now couldn’t be further from the hard years spent living in a refugee camp. When Camilla landed in Australia, she was put in touch with Job Prospects in Mount Gambier, an employment services provider. Job Prospects knew Camilla and other Burmese refugees liked horticulture, so approached Holla Fresh to see if the company was open to the idea of hiring the new arrivals. Camilla became the first Burmese refugee to get a job and 11 more have followed. Job Prospects

has provided mentors, interpreters, clothing and driving lessons for the refugees to help their transition into work. Co-owner of Holla Fresh Ian Lines said this support had been the difference between a trial and employment. “The support is critical,” he said. “If we didn’t get that help, it would be quite different - it would be too hard.” Job Prospects Mount Gambier site manager Fiona Hetherington said the ongoing support was one of the benefits of hiring through the employment service. “We screen potential employees and work closely with employers to ensure we match the right people to the job,” she said. “It is also incredibly important for refugees like Camilla to find work - employment gives her the best possible base to start a new life, make friends and live independently.” Holla Fresh supervisor Debbie Stuckey, said there had been many benefits to welcoming the 12 refugees: “Personally, it has been lovely to learn some of their culture – their food and cooking in particular,”

she said. As for Camilla, she loves her new life in Australia, her job and most of all her freedom. In the past two years, Job Prospects has placed more than 18,000 people into work, including 3000 highly disadvantaged job seekers.

LOCAL Helping

hand for local students

Two local Mount Gambier students have recently been awarded Scholarships to assist them with their Tertiary Health Studies thanks to funding by the Mt Gambier & District Community Bank. Brett Size (Above right with branch manager Tracy Koop) and Katie Cope (above left) were selected from a large pool of applicants as part of the 2013 Mount Gambier and District Health Education Grant Program. The Board of Directors of the Community Bank chose to allocate funding to support two scholarships in the

Mental Health field as this was identified at last years Community Forum as an ‘area of need’ in our Mount Gambier and district. Brett is a local Mount Gambier person, who first became interested in psychology after studying the subject during his high school education at Grant High School. He is now pursuing a career in this field, studying a Bachelor of Psychological Science (psychology, mental health, counselling, brain science) at Adelaide University; and is based in Adelaide. “The Mt Gambier & District Bendigo Community Bank

funded Tertiary Health Scholarship has been very beneficial,” Brett said. Brett was finding the financial pressures of studying his course in Adelaide quite demanding, but this assistance has helped considerably in enabling him to purchase the required text books for the course which can be quite costly. He is currently studying in his second year of the three year course, and to continue and plans to extend his studies to achieve his Masters which will mean a total of six years of study. Once qualified Brett would ideally

like to return to work in a rural area. Katie attended Mount Gambier High school for her secondary education, then continued studying to complete a degree in Nursing. Now she has branched out further to pursue her interest in the Mental Health field, specialising in ‘Mental Health and Substance Abuse’. Katie is studying externally, part time through the University of Adelaide. She lives in Mount Gambier and currently works part time in nursing. Having just completed her first semester of study, the Scholarship has helped her greatly with the financial costs associated with studying; along with the need to travel to Adelaide for study sessions every couple of months. Katie is hoping to stay and work in Mount Gambier when she completes her studies.

SOUTHERN LIFE Feels Matt Willaton might have only started work as the head chef at Hamilton’s The Roxburgh Cafe at the end of August last year but he is hardly a stranger to the region. “I’ve been coming here on and off I guess for about 15 years,” Matt said. It’s a family connection – his wife Kirsty grew up in the district – and now their young family calls it home as well. But about eight years ago, Matt did decide to make it his career and the dream is to one day own his own place. But for now plying his trade at The Roxburgh has been a dream come true. The opportunity to escape Melbourne and live in a family home prompted the move but it has been one that has energised Matt and confirmed his decision to switch from his graphic design career to fulfil his culinary aspirations. The Colliton family, who are behind The Roxburgh, are family friends and so everything fell into place for the move to Hamilton. And

Pisces You’re not going to want to hear this but you really need to rein in the spending and avoid frivolous shopping sprees. You need to start establishing some financial security and if you have children now would be the time to set up accounts in their name as well. Aries Your extrovert behaviour and the fact you refuse to conform can sometimes be endearing not to mention entertaining but it can also embarrass family or colleagues and there are times when perhaps you should be more prudent. There’s a place for freedom of expression and a place for respect and dignity. Taurus Your caring side will need to come to the fore this week with a friend in need, more than likely in hospital. Try and come up with a practical way of helping, like fresh, warm clothes, a favourite book or CD or by getting some jobs done around their home. Gemini You have been working so hard to develop some financial security. Don’t let a friend derail those efforts this week with some unrealistic demands on your generosity. You are always one to help but sometimes you have to beware of people taking advantage of that generosity. Cancer Things are a little shaky on the job front but if the worst case scenario occurs and you lose your position don’t despair. See it was an opportunity to pursue your dream of having your own business and really work hard towards making that a reailty. Leo You will face some cold hard rejection from a narrow-minded colleague so try not to take it too hard. Plenty of other people see the merit in your ideas and your time to shine could be closer than you think.

Virgo You will be tested on the financial front this week but lucky your usual frugal budgetting will mean you should be able to quickly get out of a sticky situation and get all your bills paid. Your ability to emerge almost stress free is a testament to your methodical planning. Libra Strap yourself in - an annoying work colleague is really going to test your patience this week. While you try and make life easier they are doing everything they can to make it more difficult. You need to start making a stand or this will continue indefintiely. Scorpio Things aren’t going as smoothly as you would like at work and there appears to be some instability and uncertainty in the air. It’s not really your preferred but looking into some study or professionaly development really needs to be a priority. Sagittarius I know it feels oh, so right, with a certain romantic interest at the moment but it would appear perhaps your latest infatuation isn’t the perfect match you are convincing yourself they are. Be patient - someone who really shares your values and dreams could be jsut around the corner. Capricorn You’ve spent an awful lot of time dreaming about travelling and now might be the time to seriously put that plan in motion. A long term trip could be on the cards and the perfect way to recharge the batteries after some really busy times. Aquarius You have some amazing ideas, but they are out of left field, so you need to plan quite carefully how to introduce them to your colleagues. Try not to be a bull in a china shop but rather gradually present your ideas in a low key but clear manner.

local story Women in Business Breakfast On Wednesday, August 14, the Mount Gambier & Districts Women’s Network will hold their next breakfast meeting with Judy McKay, Human Resource Management Honours graduate talking about her recent thesis - strategies to support attraction and retention of professionals/managers in the Limestone Coast. “Work factors, job security and family considerations were the most frequent reasons why professionals/ managers may stay or leave the region,” said Judy when talking about aspects of her recent research. “The value of friendships/social networks, the ability to pursue a career path in the region and being able to achieve work life balance were also important factors affecting decisions to remain or leave.” Judy was born in the Adelaide hills, educated in Adelaide, and spent several years working as a dental therapist providing dental treatment to children for South Australian Dental Services in Port Adelaide before relocating to Mount Gambier. Being rurally located, observing the difficulties of attracting and retaining professional staff sparked an interest in human resource management. She completed her degree in Human Resource Management in 2009 externally through (UniSA) with her Honours in 2012. Her thesis was based on the employees’ perspective as opposed to the employers’ perspective of the issues surrounding attraction and retention in rural regions. The aim of her research was to investigate the issues and provide practical solutions for employers to both attract and retain key employees in regional locations. The breakfast meeting is at the Lakes Resort, Mount Gambier starting at 7am. Cost is $16.50 for members with a $5 surcharge for nonmembers and includes a full cooked breakfast. Please RSVP for this event to executive@wibrd.org.au by Sunday, August 11.

the

classroom out into the real world Casterton Secondary College is taking applied learning to a new level. Science coordinator Rob Walker is a passionate advocate for learning in an applied way, a view shared by staff, and that has resulted in students learning science and other subjects in an engaging way that is linked to real world experiences. “For students to take advantage of the emerging new job opportunities in the industries of tomorrow like renewable energy and the biological sciences, they would need to study maths and science at the VCE level,” Mr Walker said. “We are located just 60 kilometres away from the famous Coonawarra wine growing district in South Australia so we thought it would be a good idea to

tap into the expertise of the local wineries. We managed to form a partnership with Wynns Coonawarra Estate’s chief winemaker Sue Hodder, who not only took students on a tour of the winery and talked about the vast range of job opportunities in the industry, but also encouraged us to pick fruit from Wynns’ Vineyard.” The kids literally plunged into the wine making business then and there and as a result the students became enthusiastic viticulturists, which led many to develop a real interest in the chemistry of winemaking. A shiraz was produced last year and the 2013 vintage is currently fermenting in an oak barrel, with early signs indicating that the wine’s quality will surpass last year’s impressive vintage. Applied learning doesn’t stop at winemaking, with students of agriculture and horticulture regularly getting their hands dirty on our 16ha farm. The Cobbodah

Murray Grey cattle stud and newly planted vineyard provide a resource for other learning areas whilst introducing students to the relationship of the production of food and fibre in our district to careers in primary industry. Students are making cheese, designing and constructing herb gardens, learning how to shear sheep, artificially inseminate cattle, mummify fish and repairing bicycles. An applied science facility is nearing completion. It will be used for large scale science experiments and other activities, to house the vats of crushed grapes during their fermentation process and aquaculture tanks to support a new aquaculture program at the college. Science has been integrated with other learning areas to provide our students with opportunities to discover and experience learning in an applied way; they will inquire, explore, question and

The $1.5 million Trade Training Centre and farm upgrade is within weeks of being completed providing opportunities for students to study in a range of industry sectors including; automotive, agriculture, carpentry, and engineering in a state of the art facility geared towards the highest quality educational facilities for our students. Staff of Casterton Secondary College are committed to ensuring every student at the college is successful and the success rate of the college’s Year 12 students year after year is something of which the staff and community can be proud. The college provides one to one support for every year 12 student: with their VTAC, SATAC and scholarship applications; continuing after they receive their ATAR scores and all students participate in a comprehensive careers program and receive individual counselling. Teachers also help students before school, during lunch times, after school and during school holidays with online tutoring also available. ADVERTORIAL I UNITING COMMUNITIES It was a 12 month project that has arguably exceeded the expectations of everyone involved. Importantly it was a success and has seen a growing band of parents throughout the region feel more comfortable and more willing to be a more integral part of their children’s education. Facilitated by Uniting Communities, in partnership with the Department of Education and Child Development (DECD), the 12 month research project which focussed on improving parental involvement and engagement in their children’s education involved seven Limestone Coast schools under the guidance of project officer Tasja Barelds. Nangwarry, Mulga Street, Newberry Park, Suttontown and MacDonald Park Primary Schools, along with Allendale East Area School and Gordon Education Centre were all part of the project which grew out of Innovative Community Action Networks (ICANs) - an initiative of the South Australian Government’s Social Inclusion and DECD’s School to Work agenda. Each participating school selected a Parent Engagement Champion (PEC) that worked hand in hand with Ms

Barelds and the parents in each school. The project not only targeted parents in looking to work out what were the barriers to increased involvement, but also was a eye opener to staff about the more inclusive role parents can play within the classroom. Ms Barelds said time constraints mainly related to work commitments, understanding the current curriculum and technology were the major barriers to parents taking a closer interest in their children’s learning. Over the course of the project and, in many cases, ongoing initiatives have been put in place at the participating schools and it is hoped a network will be developed once the research project report is released, allowing the schools to continue to work on increased parental involvement, as well as seeing other schools looking to implement the successful programs. Mulga Street Primary School produced a Parent Volunteer Booklet that outlined the many and varied ways parents can be more hands on at school and allaying fears about required paperwork and qualifications required to help out in school activities. “It was also able to show how much time would be

Celebrating parent power

required and with things like Breakfast Club it was only around half an hour,” Tasja said. “It helped parents see just what was achievable even with limited time.” Newberry Park Primary School employed a number of successful strategies, including a Maths Trail, maths homework packs and a take home survey that had some extra incentive to complete. Newberry Park PEC, Kathy Godden, could not speak highly enough of the project, from a personal perspective, as well as for the entire school community. Already an active parent at the school where her two children, Years 2 and 4, attend, Kathy saw the position advertised in the school newsletter and decided to get involved. The initiative that kickstarted the research project was a small survey card and accompanying cookie, which was baked and decorated by the students, to take home. “It was just a fun way to send home some questions that would take about five minutes just to get some feedback on what stops parents from getting more involved in their children’s learning,” Kathy said. “The cookie just made it a fun thing with

the note saying could they respond while taking five minutes to munch on the cake.” It was a novel approach that worked with between 95 and 100 percent of parents responding. The school also replaced a regular school assembly with the Maths Trail initiative, where students and any available parents had to answer questions like; how many cars were in the staff car park, how many tyres were in the car park and other maths related questions from areas around the school. “We normally get up to 30 parents for a normal school assembly and we had more than 40 attend the maths trail,” Kathy said. “It might seem only small but to see that number of parents at the school and feeling involved and feeling confident enough to be involved is quite overwhelming.” The school has also put together laminated Maths Packs with the current terms and basic methodology so parents can take them home and better assist with homework. They, too, are proving popular. Gordon Education Centre had its own unique challenges given that most parents at their school are already somewhat isolated as they

Lifestyle1.net - 025

do not do drop off and pick up - the students arrive via bus or taxi. PEC and school SSO Kerrie O’Dwyer said that once given the opportunity though, the parents responded well to increasing their involvement. The major initiative was to organise the school’s first ever sports day - a Family Fun Sports Day. But rain caused the cancellation of the initial event and then the winter had firmly set in. Organisers are planning on holding the day at the end of this term, or early next. The support for the concept from parents has been overwhelming. A Communications Booklet was also created for better communication between the school and parents. “Obviously many of the children can’t verbalise what has happened in a day at school and this booklet helps with that feedback,” Kerrie said. “The concept is already being modified to continue to meet the needs of staff and parents but it includes how

the day went, the highlights and leaves room for any further comment from either the teacher or the family.” Prior to the research project the school had two or three parents that met monthly for coffee - the research project parents and the established group have now merged and become a vibrant parent group. “It’s been a great lesson in how much parents want to be involved in their children’s learning and helping them succeed.” Gordon Education Centre principal Rob Barton said one highlight of the project was the staff enthusiasm toward the thoroughness of

planning such a big event, which has led to increased confidence in the value of parent/teacher partnerships in children’s learning. Above (from left) - Nicky Hume, Leesa Burston, Kerrie O’Dwyer, Louise Drexler, Alex Walther, Maxine Lockwood, Marion Malinowski and (front) Annabelle Drexler pictured with a selection of donated goods from Mount Gambier businesses for the school’s parent driven Family Fun Sports Day later this term or early next.

The right school not only offers the best education and a start for your child’s future, it also provides a community that offers your family support, friendship and connections as your child grows. Catholic education helps shape your child and offers a safe environment with positive influences. More

Catholic education has had a long history in the South East - stretching back to the very early days when Father Julian Tenison Woods and Mother Mary MacKillop established the first Parish School

Let’s take a look at what infrastructure investments are and how theycould add value when it comes to growing your capital and getting a predictable income. What is an infrastructure investment? Infrastructure encompasses the public systems, services and facilities of a country or region that are necessary for economic or social activity. When you invest in an infrastructure fund, you may be investing in assets such as: • toll roads • airports • telecommunications assets • materials-handling facilities such as docks • rail facilities and other transport assets • schools, hospitals and aged-care facilities • electricity power lines and gas pipelines. Timing is key Now could be a good time to think about investing in infrastructure. Rapidly developing economies overseas and a growing Australian economy mean demand is strong for infrastructure assets.Access to infrastructure has traditionally been reserved for large institutions, but some infrastructure investment funds now provide access to general investors. More diversity It’s good investment practice to spread risk across your portfolio, so all your eggs aren’t in one basket. Infrastructure assets are generally not as affected by the factors influencing other asset classes, like shares. As a result, an infrastructure investment could provide diversification and reduce the risk of your investments being susceptible to the same stressors as each other. Listed and unlisted Unlisted infrastructure investments are termed unlisted, because they’re not listed or traded through a stock exchange. One of the results of being unlisted is an inherent lack of correlation with listed investments – and the benefit of low correlation is diversification. While investing in infrastructure may provide diversification within a portfolio, combining listed and unlisted infrastructure may further improve diversification and returns. What about performance? Over the past ten years a blend of listed and unlisted infrastructure assets provided returns in excess of 10%; exceeding

the performance of Australian and international shares on both return and volatility measures1. Among other potential benefits of an investment in infrastructure are: • earnings stability • access to unique assets • returns from capital appreciation and income. It’s important to keep in mind that the returns for individual infrastructure funds will vary depending on the performance and maturity of its assets. Assets in the earlier stages of construction generally bring more risk, greater potential for growth and lower yields. These less mature assets may better-suit younger, more risk-tolerant investors. Mature assets tend to display lower growth and very high yields, which suit investors seeking a stable income over the long-term. Is it for you? Infrastructure investments have the potential to provide a regular income and capital growth over the longer-term. Depending on your needs, certain infrastructure assets may suit you better than others. Make sure you’re on track to reach your goals by speaking with us about infrastructure assets, and the pros and cons of diversifying your portfolio. After all, it's never too early to review your portfolio and reassess your goals. Source: Lucas, P., (June 2012). Infrastructure: Reliable, predictable, stable. AMP Capital. COLLECTED STUPIDITY

I read with interest recently of an Australian study which found that 72 percent of Australian teenagers aged between 15 and 17 were highly satisfied with their relationship with their parents. That’s when I started making my plans for the end of the world. Obviously the apocalypse is on its way. Hell has frozen over and it’s been nice knowing you all. Don’t panic but we’re all going to die. Start looking to the skies for the massive meteor that is hurtling towards our planet. After I calmed down and Donna talked me out of our panic room I thought about things a little more rationally. I don’t actually have a panic room; I just sit in the toilet crying. I decided to email the authors of the study as I just couldn’t believe it and this is what they responded with. Twentyfive percent of the teens they contacted for the study were too busy with

It’s the end of the world as we know it by Robbie Tansel tweeting, updating their Facebook, watching funny kitty videos on You Tube and socialising in a variety of other unsocial ways to respond to the questions. Thirty two percent were too drunk or affected by other substances to answer the questions. For that reason the people who conducted the survey couldn’t include their responses. Nobody was really sure what the flying monkeys and the little bugs that were crawling all over their bodies had to do with their parents anyway. Seventeen percent of the teens said they were too busy with Horizontal Hungarian folk dancing to take the survey. I had no idea that was so popular with the youth so I must say I was a little surprised. For some reason it does sound fun though so I’m almost prepared to accept their excuse. Unfortunately 28 percent of the teenagers surveyed did not have adequate literacy skills to move through the survey. They thought it was something to do with One Direction so spent the whole time waffling on about Harry Styles. Before you start sending me mocking emails I had

to Google a member of One Direction. Thirty-two percent of the teens had locked themselves in their rooms and refused to come out to answer any stupid questions until their parents let them go to the concert on the weekend like Maddy’s parents let her. Thirty-five percent of the youngsters could not be persuaded to take their hands off their game system controllers for long enough to answer the questions in the survey. One percent of the teenagers said they had homework they really needed to get done. All you maths teachers out there have probably performed a couple of quick calculations in your head and realised that those statistics actually add up to more than 100 percent. The obvious conclusion is

that many of the teens were doing more than one of the above at once. Lucky buggers. The true statistics were that three percent of all teens responded to the survey, and of that three percent, seventy two percent have a good relationship with their parents. It’s still not natural. Teenagers aren’t meant to be happy with their parents. If your teenager is enjoying your parenting style then you’re not doing your job. You’re obviously letting them do whatever they want. Stop being their buddy and start making their lives miserable like a good parent does. For all you teens I can be emailed at robbietansel@gmail.com, or find me on Facebook or send me a message on your Twitter machines @robbietansel. I don’t care.

LOCAL Industry Sixteen Limestone Coast organisations and individuals have been recognised for helping young people to stay engaged when it comes to education and training. Their key partnerships with local schools and organisations were celebrated at the second School Industry Partnership Awards Dinner held last week at the Barn Palais, which was hosted by the Partnership Broker Limestone Coast program and attended by more than 170 people. Helen Strickland, Manager Skills, Career and Workforce Development, Regional Development Australia (Limestone Coast) said the awards provided an opportunity for schools to say thank you to their partners by showcasing and celebrating their mutual successes and achievements. “They recognise the value partnerships bring to both schools and the broader community – collaborative approaches among the following list of winners have resulted in highly successful sport programs, work

Styling the Limestone Coast Have you ever stood in front of your wardrobe full of clothes and thought “I have nothing to wear!!” Do you find shopping for clothes a daunting experience you dread? Well, those days are over thanks to Kate Hastings. With more than a decade of experience in the marketing and media industry and countless hours spent in retail therapy, Kate has now developed her own personal styling business - Perception. Kate has always had a passion for fashion and a gift for making people feel and look their best. With encouragement from her husband Simon, she decided to put those skills into practice and completed a Personal Style Certificate and was accepted to complete an Advanced Stylist Certificate, in Melbourne, with leading Australian stylist Cindy Newstead. Kate brings not just her personal styling skills to the table but being a mother of two to Paige, 5, and Colby, 3, she understands the need to work within a budget. A personal stylist sounds like a luxury but it is a service we can all afford, with Kate offering personal shopping and styling, as well as wardrobe audits and makeovers, for both men and women. She also brings some statistics that will make you realise what a valuable investment employing the services of a personal stylist can be. Did you know the average woman only uses 20% of her wardrobe 80% of the time? That’s where the wardrobe audit, which also includes a body and basic colour analysis, comes in. Kate will assist you to cleanse and revitalise your wardrobe, while passing on advice on mixing and matching your existing clothes and accessories in many ways you have never even imagined. She also gives advice on future purchases that will enhance and expand your current wardrobe. “I am honest about pieces that perhaps don’t flatter or may have passed their used by date,” Kate said. “With the focus being teaching and empowering you to make the right choices for you and your budget. My aim is to leave you confident, inspired and able to make the right choices to look slimmer, save money and time. It’s about making your wardrobe a place of inspiration rather than confusion.” A personal styling and shopping consult includes a body and basic colour analysis and aims at teaching you how to highlight, flatter, conceal or camouflage certain features. Taking into account your own personal style, body shape, complexion and lifestyle, Kate can lead you through the shopping experience - stress-free. A personal styling and shopping experience will leave you feeling inspired and confident with your new purchases, along with the knowledge on how to spend less and have more to wear, as well as what to buy and where to buy it. If you’ve lost or gained weight, had a baby, are feeling confused about your style and wardrobe or simply want to pamper yourself, there’s no better time to treat yourself to Perception Personal Styling. Kate also offers gift vouchers perfect for a friend, partner, mother, sister or daughter. A personal stylist consult really is an investment that can help you look and feel amazing, without blowing the budget.
