Penola’s Leanne Pitman remembers Christmas 2006 vividly. Three days before the festive celebrations, she was officially diagnosed with leukaemia, specifically chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). Leanne had always been healthy and had played sport at a high level - she never expected such a life changing diagnosis. “I knew I was sick but I couldn’t put my finger on what was wrong,” she said. And neither could the doctors for that matter. It was an appointment with an Adelaide doctor that unveiled the shocking news. “I was seeing that doctor for an unrelated issue but had blood tests and that was when everything happened,” Leanne said. That was on a Friday and on the Monday morning, Leanne got the phone call that sent her and husband Ted into a tailspin. Not that they had time to really digest the news as her doctor put in motion an appointment with a haematologist. “He
actually rang me himself and said I’ll see you in my office tomorrow morning at 9am,” Leanne said. “I could feel my eyes welling up with tears and of course he wouldn’t tell me much over the phone so as quick as it was, it was an anxious wait.” Leanne remembers calling her husband sobbing to tell him they had to head to Adelaide and perhaps not surprisingly, the part of her initial consultation with the haematologist was the cost of the medication - $70,000. “I was thinking how overwhelming that was and my husband was talking about selling the house and that sort of thing,” she said. While Leanne was feeling anything but lucky, her haematologist was telling that’s exactly what she was - the world’s leading expert in CML was based in Adelaide. One phone call later and Leanne was a patient of Dr David Ross and she now admits he has been a godsend. “I can call him whenever I want and nine times out of ten he answers and the
other time he always gets back to me as soon as he can,” Leanne said. Of course, the timing of the diagnosis made things even more difficult than usual. It was the time of the year when so many things shut down and Leanne had to wait until into the New Year for a more accurate prognosis and treatment options. That was just the beginning of the hurdles Leanne would face while chasing treatment. Her scripts had to be sent to Tasmania to be approved, before being returned to her for filling. Of course Glevic, the initial medication Leanne was prescribed, is not something held in stock at regional pharmacies. “At $4800 a month, it’s not something a chemist carries so I had to get used to forewarning the local chemist,” she said. Glevic is a form of chemotherapy and for Leanne the side effects were horrendous, requiring at some stage up to 18 tablets a day, which included all the anti-nausea and other medications to try and
control the byproducts of the Glevic. Ever since diagnosis, Leanne, who has been a Light The Night ambassador and often the public face of leukaemia in ths region, has stayed true to her own character and she is happy to tell a warts and all version of dealing with leukaemia. “If my story can help someone else thats good - I’ll tell my story,” she said. Aside from the nausea, excruciating bone pain and other side effects, Leanne has also had to deal with depression - not something a lot of sufferers talk about and yet it is as debilitating a side effect as any of the physical symptoms. While Leanne cannot speak highly enough of the support she has received from her local GP in Penola, being sent to a psychologist, who now more conveniently

consults out of Millicent regularly, has been critical. One of the more testing times was when the Glevic just stopped working, in fact, Dr Ross assumed by Leanne’s blood count that she had just stopped taking it. “It was great, I was pain free for the first time in a long time and then we realised I needed a new drug,” Leanne said. While initially producing less pronounced side effects, Leanne admits that’s just starting to escalate. One of the other critical elements to Leanne maintaining a positive outlook has
been employment and she is grateful to BeRay Cabinets, in Mount Gambier, for allowing her to continue working full time. “Having something you have to get up and do is so important,” she said. Leanne knows the diagnosis has not been easy on her family and she admits she tried to shield them as much as possible from what was going on. Daughter Kristy was living at home when her mother was first diagnosed and in the end Leanne realised she had to be honest and ask for help.
Cooking dinner, hanging out washing and a host of other simple everyday tasks, at times, became impossible and Kristy, who is now 26, was an invaluable support. cont. page 4 Above - Be-Ray cabinetmaker and fellow leukaemia sufferer Michael Jazepczyk has a practice run on shaving Leanne Pitman’s (centre) hair while domestic sales manager Michael McLean donates to Leanne’s cause.

Son Wayne, now 30, has provided his mother with arguably the best antidote to a terminal illness - a granddaughter. And then there’s husband Ted - who had long calls to his family and that was when his tears were shed - as well as forging a wonderful friendship with the couple’s neighbour. Sadly, that neighbour has since lost his wife to breast cancer and the roles are now reversed as Ted becomes his good mate’s shoulder to cry on and Leanne takes on the role of surrogate mother to the couple’s sons. Ted also met the diagnosis head on by unprompted, deciding to take part in the Leukaemia Foundation’s largest, most high profile fundraiser - the World’s Greatest Shave. The accompanying function, organised by Leanne and her daughter ended up being the sixth highest fundraiser in South Australia in 2007. It was a testament to how quickly the Penola community had embraced this couple,
who had only recently arrived in the district. In Adelaide, the couple had hosted a number of South East boys who headed to the Glenelg Football Club to further their sporting careers and Adam Merrett was one of those players, eventually offering Ted a position driving for Merrett Logging when the Pitmans realised they were looking for a change from city life. And now Leanne has decided to lose her locks and Ted is set to join her - all they need now is a venue for the shave. Leanne is hoping a venue and sponsors will get on board to help her promote the shave and raise as much money as possible for the Leukaemia Foundation. “The Leukaemia Foundation is fantastic,” she said. “They are self funded and don’t get any government assistance and they provide everything to patients
for free.” That ranges from accommodation to counselling to transport and everything in between. Leanne, herself, has a foundation counsellor, Rosie, that she has bonded with and often calls for support and advice and just to chat. Leanne is hoping to raise at least $5000 from her shave, which will be later this month as soon as the venue is locked in. Anyone that can assist Leanne with a venue or any other assistance for the fundraiser should call her on 0412 213 412. If anyone would like to donate they can

go to the Leukaemia Foundation’s website click on the world’s greatest shave link and enter my name or drop it into Be-Ray Cabinets 33 White Ave Mt Gambier. Anyone who would like to donate items to be auctioned or raffled on the day of the shave should also contact Leanne. volunteers thanked
Southern Grampians Shire Council councillors would like to express their thanks to everyone who have assisted in the recent Grampians fires. A variety of people were involved in the efforts to contain the fire including response agencies, neighbouring councils, volunteers and council staff and their efforts cannot be underestimated. The support from families across the region in allowing the many volunteers to spend large amounts of time away from them during the fires should also be recognised. Southern
Grampians Shire Council Mayor Cr Albert Calvano congratulated and thanked everyone involved in the efforts to bring the fire under control. “On behalf of my fellow councillors, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the wide variety of people, neighbouring councils, volunteers and response agencies that assisted in many ways during the recent Grampians fires,” the mayor said. ”The commitment and dedication shown by these people was amazing and it is great to see community spirit so strong in our region
following the response by people to wanting to help. “It was also great to see so many council staff going above and beyond the call of duty to assist with both the fire containment and the emergency response efforts and it makes me proud as Mayor of this Council to have such committed staff.” Above - SGSC Mayor Cr Albert Calvano congratulates Daniel Selman on his volunteering efforts fighting the fires in the Grampians with the North Hamilton CFA.

Southern Grampians Shire Council is pleased to announce that tickets are now on sale for the 13th annual Southern Grampians Promenade of Sacred Music (PoSM) Festival, which will be held from Thursday, April 18 to Sunday, April 21, at historic venues across the Southern Grampians Shire. The 2013 PoSM will again transform Hamilton and its surrounding churches into live music concert halls where renowned artists and performers will showcase their beautiful music over one weekend. The opening nights performance ‘Brilliant Baroque’ at Christ Church Anglican in Hamilton will feature talented vocalists and instrumentalists performing Baroque music. The feature performance of the
festival, ‘The Glass Soldier’ (pictured above) held at the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre, tells the emotional and inspiring story of a WW1 veteran NH Ferguson, a stretcher bearer from Ballarat, tracing the misfortunes of war until his ultimate triumph against adversity. Ferguson’s story has featured in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s production ‘The Glass Soldier’ and has been immortalised in ‘The Glass Soldier Suite’ written by the renowned Australian composer, Nigel Westlake, recorded by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. This digger’s life will be narrated by the wonderful voice of Derek Guille (ABC Radio). The story will be expressed through the powerful sound of the world class MelbourneVillers Bretonneux Brass Ensemble, featuring the principal trumpet of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Geoffrey Payne. Check out the promenade’s website for all the other festival highlights and performances. Another exciting addition to the festival will be a concert presented by previous ‘Young Performers Showcase’ performers Conrad Hamill and Sarina Walter who will return to the event to perform after leaving the region to further their education in music.

coming events South East Art Society workshops The South East Art Society continues to encourage people to participate in the visual arts with its continuing “Unofficial Art Course”; unofficial because it doesn’t result in a degree or diploma but it will give participants a basic knowledge and an opportunity to be creative. The next class will be “Pastel Pathways” about using pastels in still life, landscape, and portrait. Participants will be encouraged to explore and experiment with the concepts and will need to bring sketch book, pastels, eraser and kneadable eraser (if they already have them), some materials will be available for use on the day. Basic starting colours are red, yellow, blue, and black and white. The course will be held in the Old Stables at the corner of Herbert St and Sutton Ave, Mount Gambier. The class will be facilitated by Dave Staniforth and will be held each Saturday morning 10am to noon for three weeks commencing March 9 and end ing March 23. The fee is $12 per person per week (SEAS Members $10). Places for this class are fully booked but to register your interest in future classes contact Dave on (08)8725 0038. It is hoped to follow this with a class in acrylics. The three previous classes held during 2012, “Drawing on the Right Side”, “Go Draw”, and “Picture it” which helped participants to “see” and draw what is seen, explore design and composition, and create pictures proved very popular. These will be run again if there is enough interest. Enquiries to Dave on (08)8725 0038.
Ovation launches exciting 2013 program
After triumphant seasons in 2011 and 2012 this year will see local company Ovation Centre of Performing Arts celebrate its third birthday with an array of exciting new productions and array of educational opportunities for children and adults alike. The season will see four productions presented in various venues throughout the region. Back by popular demand Rock School will open the season with both public and school sessions available. Rock School was devised last year by Ovation’s junior musical theatre students and was a giant hit with local audiences last year. With an unforgettable rock score Rock School is a hilarious, high energy and poignant musical for all ages discovering
that with friendship and confidence you can do anything. Another highlight of the season is a production currently in development under the working title of Club Neverland. Club Neverland upends the century-old legend of Peter Pan with this wildly theatrical and innovative reboot of how a miserable orphan came to be The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow up. Following last year’s production of RENT, Ovation is excited to be bringing a tribute to the world’s most popular musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show. “In an intimate setting we are looking at stripping the musical back and presenting a tribute which will Time Warp audiences back to a version closer to its original premiere at
the Royal Court Theatre many moons ago but still have all the elements that diehard fans come to expect,” Harding said. “With Rocky we are announcing another first, as this year we will open up online auditions so that talent from all over the Limestone Coast get the chance to be a part of this cult classic.” Later in the year, Ovation is also thrilled to be bringing an adaptation of acclaimed production 1984. Big Brother is back as this new stage adaptation brings George Orwell’s final novel screaming into the present. Strap yourselves in for this terrifically theatrical event featuring a cast of the regions finest up and coming actors, set against a dynamic digital backdrop. Along with productions Ovation will also be launching a series of interactive workshops in all aspects of the performing arts and to continue to bring to the region a host of the nation’s finest lecturers along with continuing their weekly classes.
Harding has just returned from a stint lecturing at Australia’s premier drama school NIDA. For further information
on Ovation classes or to be a part of any upcoming productions call 0416011643 or email ovationcpa@gmail.com

Operation of the Recycle Shop will be carried out by the successful tenderer, Future Employment Opportunities who will use any profits from the centre to provide new employment opportunities. Future Employment Opportunities chief executive officer (FEO) Rebecca Dempsey said, “It is a very exciting prospect working with the Southern Grampians Shire Council to reduce waste to landfill. The Hamilton Recycle Shop is one of eight recycling centres operated by FEO across regional Victoria and will offer the public an alternative avenue for their unwanted goods and at the same time offer bargain hunters those treasures they have always wanted”. The Recycle Shop has a number of environmental and social benefits. It will promote sustainability and recycling principles; provide additional employment opportunity in Hamilton; divert

additional waste materials from the waste stream; divert waste material going to landfill; provide a new business opportunity through this improved recycling process and provide opportunity for the purchase of second hand materials by public which would have otherwise gone to landfill. Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Cr Albert Calvano said, “Council is pleased to see this re-use and recycling facility open that will assist in diverting waste from landfill, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and extend the life of the
Hamilton Landfill.” The construction of the Recycle Shop was funded by a Federal Government Regional Local and Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP) grant. The Recycle Shop will be open from 12-4pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am-4pm. Saturday and Sunday. For further information please contact Council on (03)5573 0256. War hero statue to be unveiled Southern Grampians Shire Council is pleased to announce that the unveiling of the new Edward “Ted” Kenna VC Statue will be held on Friday, March 22, at 11am at the Sam Fitzpatrick Gardens in Lonsdale Street, Hamilton. Edward ‘Ted’ Kenna VC (6 July 1919 – 8 July 2009) was the last living Australian Second World War recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry “in the face of the enemy” that can be awarded to members of the British and Commonwealth armed forces. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in August 1940 and served in the 23/21st Battalion in Victoria and later in the Darwin area. In June 1943 his unit returned to Victoria before being sent to Queensland. At this point the unit was disbanded and its members allotted as reinforcements to other units. Kenna (pictured above) was assigned to the 2/4th Battalion and embarked for New Guinea in October 1944. On May 15, 1945, Kenna was involved in an action near Wewak, New Guinea, during which he exposed himself to heavy fire, killing a Japanese machine gun crew and making it possible for his company’s attack to succeed. For this he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Hamilton RSL President John Lowcock said he was looking forward to the unveiling after many years of planning and preparation to have the statue erected. “The Hamilton RSL is pleased to see the important achievements of Ted Kenna recognised through the installation of this statue,” he said. “The statue will be located in a highly visible spot in Hamilton that will attract visitors from near and far and I encourage anyone who can’t make the unveiling to come and visit this important part of our regions heritage.”

LOCAL Taking
matters into their own hands
Showcasing local produce Hamilton’s Botanic Gardens provide the perfect backdrop for a celebration of local produce from the Southern Grampians region and on Sunday, March 24, the community will be celebrating in style. The Harvest on the Hill has become a regular fixture on the Southern Grampians
events calendar - the family day running from 10am to 4pm at the picturesque gardens. With a wide array of food and wine on offer, the Hamilton Botanic Gardens also make for the perfect location for a family picnic, and with entertainment all day and a wide
variety of market stalls, the Harvest on the Hill is much about showcasing the William Guilfoyle designed gardens as it is the produce and artisan arts and crafts on offer. One of the features at the 2013 event will be the handmade art glass, while the festival is also a unique opportunity to tour the Botanic Garden’s cottage, which is rarely opened to the public. There will also be a return of the hugely popular Kids’ Corner, including amazing free activities, a puppet show and the Halls Gap animals as the feature attraction.
The South East Crohns Group is typical of proactive groups across this region - refusing to concede defeat on a lack of services and awareness and instead looking to start fixing the situation themselves. The debilitating gastrointestinal condition causes abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting or weight loss as well as causing complications outside the gastrointestinal tract such as skin rashes, arthritis, inflammation of the

The South East Crohn’s Group (some members pictured above) is holding a fundraising event at the West Gambier Football Club on March 16 and as well as raising much needed funds for services closer to home, the group also hopes to raise awareness of the condition. Organisers are hoping the music festival will become a regular fixture on the region’s events calendar. With Anna Coke, Pridelands, Kayne Stuckey, The Giant, Kineman Karma,
Hit & Miss, 2 Years Too Young, Mercies End, Amy Kay, Neveroddoreven and Johnny Lovett, the March 16 event promises a wide variety of wall to wall entertainment. There will also be plenty of children’s activities including a jumping castle and face painting. There will also be a market element to the day with a variety of stalls and on site catering. The day will run from 12noon to 11.30pm and tickets are $15 for adults and a gold coin donation for children. A lack of specialist services locally make life even tougher for South East sufferers and the festival aims to start raising funds for equipment and staff to better treat local Crohn’s disease sufferers.
local story Family winery earns top accolade Flint’s of Coonawarra 2008 Rostrevor Shiraz was judged one of the Top 100 wines of the competition, of the 2000 high quality wines entered, and also won the prestigious accolade of a Blue Gold medal. The Sydney International Wine Competition is a competition that is unique amongst the major internationals in that its award winners have won their award when judged alongside appropriate food. Only 15% of the total entries receive any recognition and even less are awarded a Blue Gold Medal and named in the Top 100 wines of the competition. “It is an honour for Flint’s of Coonawarra to have these awards bestowed on the 2008 Rostrevor Shiraz,” said owner Damian Flint. “For a small boutique family owned winery to produce a wine of such quality to be judged with some of the best wines, not only in Australia, but the world and come out with these results is a true reflection of the quality of our wines.” The wine was described by judges as a “brilliant food wine with good sweet fruit influence”, “a deep ruby black colour”, “rich powerful grapey notes”, ”lots of wood”, “dense”, “very full bodied on the palate packed and deep” and “rich red and black fruit flavours with lots of oak and tannins’” “To be judged a winner of the Blue Gold medal & in the Top 100 wines is just fantastic for us,” Mr Flint said. “We know it is a great wine and it is thrilling when it is verified by a high profile competition such as the Sydney International Wine Competition, especially when you see the calibre of the wines that we were judged with.” Flint’s wine is available online and through direct sales with Flint’s of Coonawarra.

Day to be crowned the best of the best - all 25 regional racing clubs fight for this honour. The Adelaide Cup is South Australia’s big day of racing, moving to its March date since 2006, adding to Adelaide’s jam packed March madness time with the Clipsal 500, Fringe Festival and the Adelaide Festival. Prior to that it was held in May, with the tradition of the Adelaide Cup starting in 1864, just
three years after the inaugural Melbourne Cup, although it did take until 1973 for te day to be declared a public holiday. It is a group 2 handicap race, run over 3200metres at Morphettville Racecourse for a prize purse of $40,000. It was first run in 1864, just three years after the Melbourne Cup was first run.

The sessions are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 11am, with the next session taking place in the Portland Library Training Room at 11am this Wednesday. The sessions will be supported by experienced library staff and are also a great opportunity for people to get together to share their know-how with others, whilst picking up some handy new skills themselves. Council’s community & culture group manager Adele Kenneally said that with the increasing popularity of these devices in the community, the library often assists people in navigating their way through new technology. “While we aren’t the experts across all devices and technologies, this workshop approach offers an opportunity for us all to put our heads together to share and build on what we know,” she said. “Participants may even find that they learn so much from the sessions that they may like to form a social group to catch up and share their knowledge.” For more information on the free Device Drop-in sessions contact Glenelg Libraries on (03)5522 2265. Ten days of paradise for art and craft lovers Geltwood Festival is a 10 day celebration of art and craft that has become a regular on the national calendar. The Millicent hosted event will be opened by ABC personality Peter Goers on Friday, March 15 in an official function at the Millicent Gallery from 7pm. The festival’s centrepiece exhibition, Michelle Hill’s William Morris Inspired Quilts also opens on that day. Michelle is widely considered a quilting expert, having penned many books on the subject, as well as winning a swag of awards for her artistry and design. Quilts have long been the focus of this festival with many shops and community spaces exhibiting what amounts to more than 350 quilts town-wide. The festival is not just about exhibitions though - there is also an extensive

workshop program, making use of the expertise from around the district and indeed Australia. From felting to cake decoration, from scrapbooking to jewellery making, the Geltwood Festival has a diverse workshop program across the 10 days. Other highlights of the festival are the Photographic Art Show, Market Day and Tall Timbers Exhibition. The Photographic Art Show now attracts national attention and with that more than 300 entries. With seven categories up for judging as well as a People’s Choice accolade, the exhibition, held at the Civic & Arts Centre, is a hugely popular attraction. Opening on March 22, it remains on show until April 1. The Market Day Sunday March 17th adds a carnival atmosphere to the arts and crafts festival, with local businesses opening their doors, as well as a wide array of local produce stalls and art and crafts for sale. There will be
plenty of food and entertainment as well, with a new addition to the 2013 Market Day being the Car & Bike Show. Encompassing a Show’N’Shine, there will be a wide variety of vintage, classics and street rods on display. The ever popular Celebrity Cook Off is also on again and this year the Millicent Lions are challenging the Beachport Lions in what will be a lionhearted competition. Come and see these local personalities test their culinary skills. The Market Day and added attractions are on Sunday, March 17. The Tall Timbers Exhibition calls the Visitor Information Centre home and
remains on display until April 27. Showcasing the best timber craftsmenship from across the region and beyond, the exhibition has always been an integral element to the Geltwood Festival. The Visitor Information Centre will also host one of the festival’s biggest quilt displays with the National Oz Australia Three Quilt Exhibition from March 15 - May 8. Totally new perspective
We all have an image of Portland, Heywood or Casterton in our mind’s eye. We all know what it looks like, how it works and how it feels. But our view is just one perspective. What might our town look like through the eyes of a 27 year old male who battles autism, epilepsy, depression and Asperger syndrome on a daily basis? What about an older man who loves to volunteer in his community but lives with a chronic illness that often confines him to hospital? These are just some of the people who are taking part in Local Eyes, a unique photographic exhibition created by United Way Glenelg. This is a photographic exhibition with a difference. Five individuals supported by United Way Glenelg’s community partners have been given training, a digital camera, and paired up with a volunteer mentor, to take photos of the community they live in; Portland, Heywood and Casterton. The photographs will be featured in a public exhibition at The Portland Arts Centre as part of the Glenelg Shire Council’s Art Program for 2013. This unique photographic exhibition gives us a chance to see our town from a new perspective. It brings together United Way Glenelg’s Corporate Partners, community partners and selected individuals to help make a real difference to those most in need in our community. Four of the five participants worked with ABC Open Producer

South West VIC, Colleen Hughson to make an audio recording their stories. They then edited sound and photographs together to produce a “Day in a Life video story”. ABC Open is a creative online project that invites regional Australians to share their stories and publishes them on the ABC. The exhibition will also include these very special videos. The exhibition is also supported by Orchard Rise Creative Arts Studio, ABC Open and Julia Street Creative Space. This exhibition was launched by United Way Australia executive officer Doug Taylor on Tuesday and runs until March 29.

Kangaroo Inn Area School is a school located in the scrub along the RobePenola Road, South Australia. It was opened in February 1963, initially to school several large families within the district. Numbers swelled to as many as 250 to 300 pupils at various times. Unfortunately parts of the school were burnt in Ash Wednesday 1983, but with true country tenacity, these areas were rebuilt and improved. On February 5 this year, this school turned 50 years old. So there is a real need for a celebration. On Saturday, April 13, there will be an evening meal held in the school hall commencing at 6.30pm. Live entertainment will be provided by “Juicy X” (some band members are old scholars). Memorabilia will
be a feature of the night. 350 tickets will be available for sale at $40 per ticket and payment will be required prior to the evening. There will be ticket sales after March 15, if still available. If numbers warrant, buses will be organised to ferry Millicent, Beachport and Robe party goers when the clock strikes 1am. Accommodation is available at Millicent, Penola, Robe, Lucindale or Kingston. On Sunday, April 14, a family fun day, from 10am to 3pm, has been planned at the school, with various fundraisers, an open day at the school,
with BBQ and drinks available, children’s entertainment, birthday cake and plenty of time to catch up with those you missed seeing on Saturday night. Live music for the day will be provided by Leah Briggs, who happens to be an old scholar, as well as a country music sensation. Bring your own picnic rug or chair and a desire to relive your school days. All enquiries to Kangaroo Inn Area School. Phone (08)8734 3046 or fax (08)8734 3134.

ADVERTORIAL I SE FIELD DAYS
With acknowledgement to Paul Kelly for such a great song and title, this phrase perfectly sums up the Lucindale South East Field Days; this year staging their 35th two day event on March 15 & 16. From humble beginnings this event is now the largest two day annual agricultural field days event in South Australia. However the recipe that made it successful as a smaller event has been strictly adhered to, ensuring it retains its appeal for both site holders and visitors no matter how big it gets. It is the hard working committee’s attention to every detail that makes it the “Family Friendly Days”. “Every age group is well catered for, from toddlers to our highly valued senior citizens,” current Field Days president Doug Crosby
From little things big things grow
said. There is no doubt the attentive year round maintenance of the Yakka Park site is a big start towards the success of the event each year. Well laid out on a flat, grassed and watered area, with well signposted streets makes it easy to find and get to particular sites. “This makes it beneficial for site holders as well as the visitors and consequently they do more business and want to keep coming back. The Yakka Park site is very nearly full again this year,” Doug said. “We have shifted a few things and expanded the Rayner’s Roost Diner in the southeast corner to greatly improve amenities and the entertainment in that area. The Lucindale Lions courtesy bus assists the less mobile to get around the site, plus there are
gophers that can be hired. Amenities are not the reason anyone attends, but they are extremely important for personal comfort once there. There are plenty of these at Yakka Park. Likewise food and refreshment facilities are equally important. Rayner’s Roost has been mentioned, but this is just one of the seven specialty food courts on the site. “We have everything from Chinese to pizza, to homemade icecream and almost everything in between,” secretary Lyn Crosby said. “The Limestone Coast region is a real mecca for foodies and it’s renowned for the quality of lamb, beef, wine, home grown spices and plenty more,” Without highlighing anyone from the 600 plus sites, there are three large general interest pavilions and heaps of the
latest agricultural equipment situated throughout the event. The south west side of Yakka Park will host the Limestone Coast Business Hub, which will be huge from an educational viewpoint and encompasses the AusIndustries new inventions from past field days. “There’s jewellery, arts, crafts, fashion, wines, education, business planning and finance, cropping development, livestock, tools, machinery – you name it, it is probably there,” Lyn said. The youngest of the visitors are not forgotten either. There’s the Balharry Memorial Kindergarten activity tent, Old McDonald’s Animal Nursery, the Blue Yakka trail, the Elders Mailbox and Scarecrow competitions and the Pedigree Puppy Pound, not to mention the
huge array of entertainment. Each year the committee try to refresh the entertainment program. “Let us entertain you,” is the catchcry of one of this year’s new attractions, Factory FMX, the Freestyle Motorcross Team. You’ll see bikes and their riders fly ten metres high and 25 metres through the air while performing the newest and craziest tricks in the sport. Another major coup has been to engage the Band of the South Australian Police. Australia’s first police force has a proud history with its world renowned band dating back to 1884. The band actively supports many community events and will perform a showcase of its repertoire. Its popularity is such that it is a real treat to be able to get them to the South East Field Days. Unforeseen
circumstances prevented Snakebusters, “Hands on Reptiles” from attending last year after their popular 2011 appearance, but they’ll be back again this year. When you add in favourites like Circus Elements, the Can-Am Mud Trial Team, the Honda Australia rider training displays, the ever popular fashion parades, the combined schools choir, the NSW Quilters’ 30th anniversary ‘Pearl Quilt Challenge’ and the major South East Yard Dog Championships, there’s plenty to keep you entertained for the full two days. There are also gate prizes at the event with many prizes to be won, including a $500 Bank SA account. “It is not an expensive day out and people can pack a picnic lunch if they want and just sit
back and relax on the grass and enjoy the day,” Lyn said. “We pride ourselves on being a clean, green and friendly event; there’s something for all the family.” For a small community of 400 people, Lucindale is indeed an example of big things growing out of small things. The event is “owned” by the Lucindale Lions Club and profits raised from this event go into growing other south east community services. More than $2 million has been donated to local, national and international charities from this event. For more information, visit the website at www.southeastfielddays. com.au Above - Lyn (secretary) and Doug Crosby (president) at the SE Field Days entrance.

year. Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Cr Albert Calvano said that it was fantastic that the shire has been involved in the largest sustainability initiative ever undertaken in the region. “This project, which was initiated by the Sustainability Coordinators Network, demonstrates the benefit of staff from all levels networking across different councils. The $3 million street light retrofitting project will see 7668 street lights replaced with energyefficient lighting across the six Great South Coast municipalities – an area covering some 23,000 square kilometres. Aside from the significant electricity cost savings, the project will also reduce greenhouse gases by 2954 tonnes
a year, which is the equivalent of taking 650 cars off the road. There will be around 1000 street lights replaced in the Southern Grampians Shire, saving Council at least $50,000 per year in energy and maintenance costs. The project will also reduce council’s greenhouse gas emissions by around 400 tonnes per annum with the cost of installation being recovered in seven years. SOFTBALL Warriors
Warriors star pitcher Tanya Hood has led her club to a 14th Mount Gambier Softball League A grade title since taking over the helm as playing coach. It is the club’s 30th A grade premiership in the past 51 years. And sister Michelle Hosking, who also last weekend won the association’s runner-up best and fairest titles, led from the front in an MVP winning performance that saw her clincal and often spectacular in the field and
claim title in grand final tri-series
solid in the batting box - the only player in the match to record more than one safehit. Having taken game on last weekend 10-1, Warriors were favoured to easily wrap up the title in the first game at the weekend but unlike their almost flawless performance in the game one victory, game two opened with a spate of fielding errors, uncharacteristic by the reigning champions for any time of the season, let alone at finals time. In recent
seasons, Demons have put Warriors under most pressure by using their short game and aggressive base running but ironically some ambitious base running might have cost them their chance at posting an early run. After Maggie Breen made the most of an error off her first hit, getting to second, she was then tagged out at third on the next play. Some overthrowing again saw Sallyanne Morgan reach first and Emily Taylor
turn what should have been a regulation out at second into an extra bag, sitting dangerously poised at third with only one out. But then Hood’s game smarts came to the fore after fielding an easy ground ball - she held the runner at third, looked to make the easy play at first but then simply turned and threw out Taylor, arguably the quickest runner in the Demons line-up, who had been sent home assuming Hood would take the easy out at one. Youngster Courtney Ashby then took a good catch at right field, in what were swirling conditions all day for outfielders, and the chance to score for the underdogs was over. Demons were not rattled though by the early missed opportunity and were clinical in the field. Two good catches either side of a strike out from Maggie Breen saw no damage done, despite a stunning piece from Hosking through centrefield. Hosking then backed that up with a regulation play as well as a spectacular stop and throw before sister Tanya cleaned up the innings with a strike out. But Breen, who suffered watching so many of her pitches ending up in the outfield last weekend, had come to play, adding
two more strike outs to her tally and for the next innings no one looked liked turning their batters into runners. It was at the bottom of the fourth that the first genuine chance for the reigning champs emerged, started by Hosking finding her way to first and then Steph Wighton producing a beautiful safehit to centrefield. A perfect bunt from Deb Bartholomew (Hicks) then produced loaded bases with no outs and the young Demons line-up was under pressure in the field for the first time in the match. Amber hood was out to an infield fly before Eleanor McClintock did enough to not oly score the run but find her way safely to first as well. Warriors might have drawn fist blood but Breen was refusing to concede any more, ending any potential threat on her won with two strike outs. From the top of the fifth until the end of the contest, it was again a case of the two pitchers not giving up any easy hits and with the title on the line at the top of the seventth, Warriors only had to hold Demons scoreless and the premiership was theirs. Hood started with a strike out, McClintock then took a good catch off a tricky

It was anti-climactic end to the contest but made the victory no less impressive. The skipper combined with in form Andrew Crouch (75no.) to easily steer Yahl to yet another Barber Shield showdown with reigning triple champions South Gambier. Matt Merrett was the man who eventually held onto a Wilson chance off the bowling of Michael McGurk, It was arguably the sharpest of all the opportunities, going low and quickly to the cover fieldsman. Brad Maney was the aggrieved bowler, after snaring Geoff Hay leg before, he then delivered a picture perfect delivery shaping away from the right hander and as he had planned it caught the edge, but the low slips catch was juggled then grassed. The next Maney over, Wilson skied a delivery, testing mid off in the swirling breeze and that too went to hand but then to
ground. The next three chances were all difficult - another high ball over mid on this time and then a sharp lofted drive that at full stretch Daniel Redman could only get his fingertips to as it raced to the boundary. The next opportunity was in the gully before another ill conceived shot that again sailed high, allowing the breeze to add to the difficulty - that was only one over before he was eventually dismissed and that time the damage was limited. Whatever Wilson’s fortunes, Crouch needed none. Save
for some streaky shots that raced through the gaps in the slips to the boundary, his was a flawless knock, reminiscent of his Twenty 20 effort when he combined aggressive shot making with clever placement and rotation of the strike to compile his total. His 75 included 10 fours, including the winning boundary, as well as one six - that brought up his half century. Right from the first over, the cricket gods were against Penola - a close run out call in the first over went against them and it was downhill from there.
Maney was the pick of the attack and always looked likely, whole Lachlan Jones battled manfully all day and a late spell from Brett Vaughan looked promising but his chance came when the match was drawing to its inevitable conclusion. It took just 43 overs and finished just before tea. South Gambier was also in a generous mood in the field, dropping two catches in the first two overs as the reigning champs defended their well-compiled 234. A 75 run second wicket stand between David Somerfield and Kieran
Ashby laid the platform for the impressive total, while youngster Patrick Glynn survived an early, confident caught behind appeal to remain unbeaten on 48, combining with the likes of Josh Thompson (17) and former West spearhead Robbie Drenthen (19) to ensure the Maroons posted a tough target. Drenthen returned Sunday determined to do more damage and took the first three wickets of the innings as West looked unsettled at 3/25. Teenager and T20 hero Ryan Hosking (26) then combined with stalwart
Peter Hawthorne (66) for a stabilising 60 run fifth wicket stand that had the match back in the balance. Enter Matt O’Neil - the speedster removed big hitting Bray Stephenson (8) and then the only man that really stood between South and victory - Nick Martin -without scoring. The removal of Martin, who can score quickly and prolifically, ensured the match was completely in South’s control and so this weekend cricket lovers all head to Frew Park to watch another South-Yahl Barber Shield decider - South gunning for a fourth successive title and Yahl still looking to live the fairytale after being bridesmaid on a number of occasions in the past decade. Above (top row from left) Andrew Crouch, who started batting in a helmet, strikes this ball cleanly; Daniel Redman gets ready to return this shot to the keeper; Ben Wilson winds up to despatch this delivery; Dave Somerfield was at his clean hitting best before being dismissed for 42; Kieran Ashby strikes this delivery down the ground. Above (bottom row from left) - Brad Maney was the pick of the Penola attack and bowled with limited luck; Shane Dycer sent down 25 overs and secured 3/61; this Bray Stephenson delivery went on to hit the stumps and bowl South’s Alex Hentschke and another classy stroke coming up from Andrew Crouch, who changed to a cap halfway through his innings, remaining unbeaten on 75. Opp. page - Damien Wenham and his team mates through they had the run out in the first over of the Barber Shield semi final at Frew Park but it was not out.

The stage is set for hometown fariytale
Mount Gambier driver Anthony Beare already has a national street stock titles to his name. He was the 2007 champion after a podium finish (3rd) the previous season. This weekend he has the chance to add to the history books on his home track. Beare is already a trailblazer in the 2012/13 season, becoming the only driver in street stock history to hold every State title simultaneously. If he could add his second national crown to that, on his home track - the stories would write themselves and Beare (pictured) would hold an even more prestigious place in the sport’s history. The quietly spoken driver, who openly admits that luck can play a huge part in motor racing, has been around the sport his whole life. All his childhood photos are of him at the track, by a car or in the racing gear. “My father raced from when I was about two and a half and I was brainwashed pretty much,” Beare said. The 2007 national champion started racinf junior sedans in 1996 before graduating to the adult classes in 2001. Just as it was when he was growing up, the sport has become a family tradition - everyone travels together across Australia - the Beare

family knowns nothing else. Motor sport at any level in any class is not a cheap choice and it has been financial reason that has kept Beare in the street stock ranks - only the lucky few who can find financial backers graduate to sprintcars, as 2003 national street stock champion Steve Lines, from Mount Gambier, has been able to do so successfully, finishing third in the World Series Sprintacr 12 round series this season. While he loves racing at the Borderline Speedway, it is a numbers game and if he can race in bigger fields, often in places like Ballarat, then to maintain his high standard of racing he has to go where the cars are. “You can’t buy laps, it’s like being a footballer, you need the matches under your belt,” Beare said. A diesel mechanic by trade, Beare also does the lion’s share of work preparing the car for each outing. Street stock is a class that has been owned by drivers from this region for some time and Bear
actually beleives it is from close to home that his greatest challenge will come. “I really think the Gartners - I just think they’re due and they’re going really well at the moment,” he said. Beare admits Mount Gambier was a great place to grow up learning to drive street stocks becamse of the likes of the Jennings boys, Gartners, Matthew Nielsen and Lines. “It used to be a hard thing here to just win a race,” he said. Jamie Jennings raced against Beare’s father and Mark has always been a big help to his fellow street stock competitor. “Having so many good drivers here generation after generation has defnitely had a flow on effect,” Beare said. Outside of the local contingent Brad McCure and Jamie Oldfield loom as the party poopers for what local fnas will be hoping is a fairytale title victory this weekend.

HOCKEY Major The Lower South East Hockey Association is currently putting the finishing touches to its $500,000 turf replacement and watering upgrade to its facility at Blue Lake Sports Park. The half a million dollar redevelopment will get its first workout this weekend when the assocaition hosts Adelaide based clubs Grange and Seacliff in a pre-season exhibition tournament. Mount Gambier Mayor Steve Perryman will officially open the new surface at 12noon on Saturday before the dress rehearsals begin. The replacement and upgrade of the hockey facility in Mount Gambier was mainly self funded by the LSEHA with the help of a grant to upgrade the watering system. The new infrastructure will enable

motor Pajero takes out top magazine award
Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited’s (MMAL) legendary Pajero has claimed top spot in its category for the OzRoamer 2012 Car of the Year awards. Edging out commendable competitors, the 2012 Pajero Exceed 3.2CDi automatic was named ‘Best seven-seat 4WD over $70,001’. Oz Roamer editor Rob Fraser said important factors in the Pajero Exceed’s win included its best value for money, more interior space, consistent performance and its best overall balance. The panel of nine judges reviewed each vehicle subjectively and objectively measuring them against their competitors but more importantly the criteria reflect real life situations that assist readers to make educated buying decisions. MMAL’s CEO Mutsuhiro Oshikiri said the award highlights the Pajero’s superior value in a competitive market. “From the entry-level GLX to the luxury Exceed, there is a Pajero to suit all budgets and to cater for all on and off-road needs, all with exceptional power and performance with no compromise on value.” Oshikiri said. The Pajero Exceed is packed full of features and offers the ultimate in comfort four-wheel driving. The Exceed is available with the 3.2L Common Rail Direct Injection Intercooled Turbo Diesel engine or the 3.8L V6 MIVEC Petrol engine both coupled with five-speed automatic transmission featuring sports mode. The Exceed comes standard with luxury specifications and superior safety features including seven airbags, active stability and traction control and reverse parking sensors.
