The Many Mental Health Benefits of Exercise

Exercise and Depression

Studies show that exercise can treat mild to moderate depression as effectively as an tidepressant medication—but without the side-effects. Regu lar exercise promotes all kinds of changes in the brain, in cluding reduced inflammation, and new activity patterns that promote feelings of calm and well-being. Exercise releases endorphins, powerful chem icals in your brain that make you feel good. Regular ex ercise relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood. Hi Scarlet Mood Followers!

Last month was a crazy one for me, I got ENGAGED! The rush of love and happiness has been flowing between my fiance and I. It's a magical time and now I get to share it with all of you as well. I already have a few tips for you and your significant other when you are going through this next step in your lives together. Here are a few thoughts:

Savor the moments of you two ALONE. Spend quality time with each of your families to tell the story on how he “popped the question.” Take a ton of pictures and videos. See your friends in person to tell them all the details. It makes it more personable. If you have time - Throw yourself an engagement party! We just had ours and it was the most amazing start to all the future wedding festivities that are coming our way. Always be sure to remember this day Is about the LOVE that you and your significant other share for each other - don't let anything get In the way of that!

With love, Bianca Scarlet

A brief synopsis of my Art Discovery and Transitions: from drawing to painting to photography to printmaking to reliefs to sculpture and con tinuing...continuum. My first attraction to making art came by way of color at age 5 with my first glimpse of large jars of pure poster colors. Over whelmed I recall telling myself "that's what I want to do". It was my good fortune to have many good teachers and I feel the need to acknowledge their role in my decision to make ART my life: like Miss Daken who was the first to show me at 11 years old her precious book on the Italian Masters! What an eye opener that was! I had never seen anything like it! and this experience encouraged me to be an "artist". Memorable is Donald Brackett my teacher at Cass Technical High School when he said “Carry a sketch book where-ever you go” and" It takes a long time to be an art ist" Cyrl Miles, who taught Sat urday morning classes at the DIA told me to "experiment... experiment”. which I still do to this day. It was Dorothy Skewis who found me a summer job in a silk screen printing shop on Detroit's Brush Street. It was there I learned to make Photo Screens. I continued fig ure drawing classes with Rob ert Diebboll and study with Guy Palazzola who introduced me to making photograms and secured a scholarship for me at the old Arts and Crafts in Detroit. My four year scholar ship was interupted after one

year by two years in the mili tary where I kept a sketch book in my foot locker. Searching for work I was hired at Gen eral Motors Styling where I learned to work with a team of clay.modelers developing full size futuristic models. Yes I came home too tired to paint so I decided to work on my art in the early mornings. I met a former Arts and Crafts student Lloyd Redell who informed me that if I save my money I could study art as I wanted in Rome. I took his advice and in one year I asked for a leave of absence from Edward Glowac ki who was then vice president of Design. He hesitated at first but came through for me. In Rome (1959-1961) I studied at La Academia Delle Belli Arti with Franco Gentilini whose work looked to be inspired by Modigliani. I was still doing figurative painting but also was curious about abstract art. It was a mystery to me. Every class was based on drawing or painting the nude model. One day a student from Greece be gan painting in black and white that had nothing to do with the figure. Our Professor lost is temper and threw the student out saying don’t come back! I asked the assistant Professor if he could teach me about ab stract...his response was “What do want me to do, lose my job?

I continued making my art which gradually evolved to be ing non-figurative to abstract. Art History class expected the student to choose an artist to write about. I chose Caravag

gio. I was and still am inspired by the way Caravaggio com posed and dramatized a subject with the power of shadow and light. For my second year thesis I chose the iss artist Paul Klee. For me Klee's paintings reveal a magical color and dream-like poetry. I was curious enough to retrace his journey to Tu nisia and hitchhiked through the desert to Sfax, a city which Paul Klee had written about.. Half way there stood the re mains of a Roman Coleseum.. The Frenchman stopped and I was able to stretch my legs and explore the crumbling Roman architecture and make pho tos. This finished my thesis for the school. Before leaving Italy I made my first abstract oil paintings. 1970 is the year I began working in series "Mea sured Space" series (evolved from 1969 to 1972). Painting is all about how we see and this thought put me on a path to create works initially using just line and one color and lat er multi colors. My theory is that every thing is measured for one reason or another. I be

gan a painting by first making a linear, white grid, then added some diagonal lines. This was important visually as it gave the impression of perspective without a vanishing point. and created an ambiguous visual experience that is known as vi sual perception. My paintings are a visual puzzle concerning the time it takes to comprehend what the eye is seeing. As you look at "Color Cubes" in this exhibit, observe how the paint ed color-forms appear.flipable... receding or then coming for ward...thus prolonging the viewers visual experience. The concept of visual perception continues to interest me.

My experimental drive contin ued when I organized a series of artperfomance events for the Pyramid Gallery (Ann Ar bor 1973). My one idea, "Paint, Space and Energy" was to ex plore and create a lyrical linear work. First covering the gallery walls with black plastic I then spaced three clear plastic sheets 8ft. x 14ft long. And about three feet apart. This was a colabora

tive event with myself and 2 other artists, each having one color (red / yellow / blue) while Gerhart Selonsky played im proptu violin. With the room lights off, each artist quickly painted--tracing a figure's slow dance movement across the horizontal plastic screen.(lit up from the back with flood lights). The performance was spontaneously applauded as I sandwiched the three sections together to reveal a compo sition of overlaping lines and colors. The work was then cut into pieces and given out to the audience. "Progressions" series

: Painting Black on fresh fall ing snow In 1974 I accepted a teaching position at Pennsyl vania State University where I lived in a country setting. After a good snow fall, I ventured out to use black acrylic paint on a pristine field of snow. Know ing it would disappear I doc umented this event with slide film. This led to a series I call Black and White Progressions which led to an exhibition at

the Penn State Hammond Gal lery. Seeing my exhibit, Jack Mitchel, a composer working on his graduate thesis of an electronic music composition approached me requesting to include my Black and White Progressions for his thesis. I agreed and we found two danc ers (both dressed in black and white) to perform an intuitive dance. My snow painting slides were projected to fill the entire stage. The movement of the black & white dancers created a changing black-and-white composition as they moved across the stage responding to the electronic music. I took slides as a document. It was an exciting event for the audience Jack and myself. Several similar events were held at other ven ues using other b&w paintings from my Progressions series. In 1979 I was awarded a Ford Foundation Grant thru Penn State University (to make a study of the beginning of per spective in Italy) Upon my re turn I began a series of canvas paintings concerned with join ing traditional perspective with the contemporary spatial issues of two-dimensional painting.

My idea was to blend flat planes of color with a composition of linear structure. One of these paintings (on view here) titled “Blue Cut" was transitional for me. I broke up the atmo spheric space with a solid blue rectangle suggested to me to cease with illusion of space and build a painting in three di mensions. This lead the way to a new series which I call Relief Paintings. These Italy-"perspec tive-study" inspired paintings were exhibited together with my series of large black & white photographs. The idea for the photographs being "contrast ed objects in store windows joined together with perspec tive street reflections on the plane of glass." The intent was to illustrate how the same idea can be conveyed in various mediums. I began my actual space works by making small relief collage paintings out of cardboard. Next I used canvas glued to plywood structures, then moved to paint directly on the primed plywood construc tions=Relief Paintings. Reflect ed Color In 1980 I accepted a visiting artist position at Tow son State University, Maryland.

It was here while making those paper collages that I discovered reflected color. I found this ex citing and important enough to make it a part of my art paint box. Many of my relief paint ings and sculptures have this quiet and at times brilliant col or reflection. "Movables" series We are all use to the idea that we should look at a work of art but do not touch. I decided to incorporate the viewer and build movable painting con structions where I give you, the viewer, hands-on permission to touch and move it! to recom pose it at will. In more recent years I have returned to paint ing on stretched canvas. The subject being COLOR. Work ing with the purely visual effect of how colorsbrelate to another color painted next to it. One series is "Color Moves" another series is "Color of Shadow" next is "Edge" series. Other series are titled "Blue Surround" "Sun Surround" and "U series"... all a continuing continuum. I am never short of ideas and continue on a daily sched ule to keep on creating.

Best, David

Ferragosto: When almost every Italian starts vacation

No other Italian holiday lasts as long as Ferragosto, which technically is celebrated on Aug. 15 but can last a week or two – or even the entire month of August – for some citizens.

The holiday originated with the first Roman emperor Augustus in the year 18 BC, who ordered a day of rest on the first day of August following weeks of hard work harvesting the fields. The holiday was known as Feriae Augusti, which is now more commonly known as Ferragosto.

The holiday was eventually moved to Aug. 15, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, which is also a Holy Day of Obligation in the Catholic church.

In the 1920s, the fascist regime organized “holiday trains” to cities and resorts, offering discount prices for one to three days of rest. Food and board were not included, so Italians packed their own feasts.

Today, August 15th in Italy has many traditional celebrations. Some are religious processions honoring the Virgin Mary’s ascension into heaven. Others are festive and fun, ranging from fireworks, water balloons, horse races, bonfires, beach games and more. In Rome, the Gran Ballo di Ferragosto is a city-wide party. Many streets and squares feature different types of dance festivals.

After the 15th, offices, factories, many stores and restaurants –

especially mom-and-pop establishments – often shut down for a week or two, and some require all employees to use their vacation days during that time. The fact that August is the hottest month in Italy also inspires families and friends to plan group vacations and head to cooler seaside, lake, mountain or pastoral communities for vacation.

The foods of Ferragosto

Because so many crops are harvested in late summer, Ferragosto festivities often feature large gatherings of family and friends around the dining table. Foods served to celebrate Ferragosto are typically

light, such as cold pastas and fresh vegetables and fruits, especially juicy watermelon sold at roadside stands. But Italians enjoy feasting on good food no matter what the weather, so there are some traditional dishes associated with Ferragosto, such as ripe tomatoes stuffed with seasoned rice.

In Tuscany, popular holiday dishes are roast squab and panzanella, a “bread salad” made with day-old bread, ripe tomatoes, onions, basil and a light vinaigrette.

In Rome, the traditional holiday dish is slow-cooked chicken with sweet peppers. In Puglia, galluccio is a grass-fed cockerel that is stuffed and baked, a

specialty once relished by less affluent families who could afford to eat meat only on holidays.

Sicilians celebrate Ferragosto with Gelu di Muluna, a chilled watermelon pudding that often contains chocolate chips to imitate the seeds.

Traveling in Italy during Ferragosto

Foreign visitors who arrive in Italian cities may find a quieter-than-normal atmosphere, because so many locals are vacationing. Almost everything is closed on Aug. 15, and many shops and restaurants are closed for a week or two near that date. But tourists may

benefit from smaller crowds in museums and cultural centers that remain open, including the Colosseum, Pantheon or Galleria Borghese in Rome. Some Italian cities even have special festivals around the time of Ferragosto. In Sassari, Sardinia, the Descent of the Candelieri has been held for more than 700 years every Aug. 14, with a spectacular parade of locals carrying huge candles in a procession to honor Our Lady of the Assumption. And in Siena, the famous Il Palio di Siena – a thrilling bareback horse race in the town’s central square – is held every Aug. 16.

Want to learn Italian?

Children’s classes have workbooks and other materials including music at their grade levels to help them learn the language without the pressure of taking tests and having homework. Learning Italian and other languages has proven to help children understand English grammar as well.

The focus for adults, on the other hand, is on developing stronger conversation skills to help with a visit to Italy or to keep language aptitudes sharp. Gain the abilities and confidence to start speaking a new language. There is a perfect course level for you. This year we are trying something new and adding an online course for people that might be traveling to Italy and want to learn the basics for tourists!!

Registration has begun. Classes for Kindergarteners – 6th grade and up will start October 8th. Adult Classes will start September 12th. For more information or to print our registration form, please visit our website, iacsonline.com or call 586-228-3030

Erano i

È festa nazionale in Liechtenstein e Spagna e giornata festiva in molti altri paesi soprattutto cattolici.

Tuffarsi in acqua (ovunque voi siate)
