Spy Museum: Are You Cut Out for Espionage

Spend the day at the Spy Museum in its fantastic new space. Students will first participate in a handson forensics course, where you will become forensic scientists and use FBI equipment to examine evidence and make recommendations to track down a double agent. Then, you will head into the museum to explore the history of spying. This is an unprecedented view into the undercover world that keeps our country safe, or does it? After exploring the museum, we will have lunch in L’Enfant Plaza.

Asian Art and Food

Explore the National Aquarium in Baltimore! Experience dozens of unique aquatic habitats, watch a 4D movie, and meet aquatic animals, including sharks, dolphins, and more. Discover a world of complex, highly intelligent creatures, and then enjoy lunch at the Inner Harbor and a little exploring.

Teacher for a Day

Spend a day teaching, helping, supervising, and playing with pre-K, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students. What is it like from the other side? How does one deal with a room full of children? Teachers will guide you as you help them deal with the excitement and energy of a lower school classroom. No prior preparation necessary.

Fun On the Farm with Ms. Gooch Ms. Gooch is inviting us to her farm for a day of fun and learning! Ms. Winters and Ms. McDermott will accompany the group as we meet her animals, learn to make jam, and try our hand at making bread. We will grab a late lunch in Darnestown before returning to Norwood. Note: Students with animal allergies should note that this group will be working with a large dog, chickens, ducks, and a pet pig.

Build It! Mousetrap Cars and Mosquito Fliers

Spend the day building, testing, and refining vehicles such as the "Little Moe" Mousetrap Racer and the Mosquito Glider. Both require precision building and controlled operation since they are light weight/miniature versions of their full-size model counterparts.

Games of Chance

How do opportunities to play competitive games develop your understanding of probability, your ability to process input from other people, and your ability to adjust to changing circumstances? We will be learning how to apply probability and strategy in card games, primarily Texas Hold ‘Em and Blackjack. We plan for both beginners and experienced players to be present and will go over the basics of both games and engage in competitive play.

Entertainment Nation at

the National Museum of American History

Students will travel to the National Museum of American History to visit its new exhibit, Entertainment Nation, which explores how media and entertainment have shaped, guided, and provided a unique space for national conversations about our identity as a nation. After walking to Shake Shack for lunch, we will go ice skating on the National Gallery of Art's rink (weather permitting).

Air and Space Museum: Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center

Come join us to explore the Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, VA. We will start the trip by walking around and viewing the various exhibits, followed by a guided tour focusing on Military Aviation. The tour will explore the evolution of aircraft that contributed to the growth of the air transportation industry. Lunch will be at the Shake Shack, which is located inside the Museum.

Telling Their Stories: Mount Vernon’s Enslaved People

Visit the home of our first president and get a different perspective on the foundation of our country. Explore the estate's historic outbuildings where the enslaved community lived and worked. Hear the stories of individuals such as William Lee, Caroline Branham, and Christopher Sheels, and learn how their work made Mount Vernon a successful plantation. The tour will end with a special wreath-laying at the Slave Memorial.

Museum of Illusions

Are you ready for some mind-bending fun? If so, you’ll want to explore the Museum of Illusion in Washington, DC! This outing will feature an interactive museum experience with stunning 3D illusions and art exhibits. Play, compete, learn, and challenge your mind. After our museum experience, we will do a bit of exploring and have lunch.

The National Museum of American Diplomacy is the first museum in the United States dedicated to telling the stories of American diplomacy. Students will participate in a curated tour and talk and learn how American diplomacy shapes the nation's prosperity and security.

Tracing the Hero’s Journey in Classic ‘80s Movies

Join Ms. McDermott and Ms. Winters as we discuss the hero's journey in movies such as Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Princess Bride. We will watch both movies and trace the steps each hero takes in their quest. Students are welcome to bring their favorite movie snacks.

Investigating Mosaic Mysteries: Design a Bas-Relief Wall Installation Sculpture

In this workshop, we will view film clips, glass artist installations, artist interviews, reference images, while exploring the equipment used to practice this century-old art form. Mosaics are made of tiny colored pieces of stone, glass, pottery, or environmentally recycled materials designed together and solidified in a ground to create images. Mosaics have a long art history; they were implemented in ancient times in Babylon, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. When the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were rediscovered, many myriads of mosaics were rediscovered as well. Students will meet briefly before the Intersession class to collectively decide on their installation work of art.

Songwriting, Improvisation, and Live Performance Workshop

Do you have a poem you would like to set to music? Do you have a vocal solo you would love to have backed up by a quartet comprised of world-renowned rock and jazz musicians? Do you have a jazz song or solo you would like to learn and perform? Then, you’ll want to join this all-day songwriting and improvisation workshop highlighting the musical styles of rock and jazz that has been created for instrumentalists (winds, brass, strings, percussion) and singers. Participants will learn various popular song forms, melody writing, and melodic and harmonic devices, as well as gain experience following chord progressions while developing and creating an improvised solo. We will host a live performance at the end of the day for students who would like to strut their stuff. As an added feature, our special guest educators will provide an hour-long clinic to discuss and demonstrate techniques and methods for the electric/acoustic guitars, drums electric bass and piano.

Wordplay at Planet Word Museum

Way more fun than Wordle! Join us in a romp through this amazing new interactive museum where we will play with words (but not by writing!) You will take part in solving a mystery in Lexicon Alley among other fun activities at Planet Word. After lunch at a venue near the museum, we will visit a gigantic photo exhibit nearby, then take the Metro back to Friendship Heights.

Get Creative! Get Connected! Get Coding!

How will programmable objects change our future lives? Ever heard of the BBC micro:bit? This tiny computer is designed to make programming and coding easy and fun! Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced coder, the micro:bit with its programmable lights, buttons, music, Bluetooth connection, and accelerometer will provide opportunities to expand your skills. Using its online drag-and-drop interface, you can learn basic programming. Video clips are available for some ideas and skills. If you are already adept at programming, you can use one of the language-based interfaces to code in a specific language. Clip the small device to your leg and dance with it. Clip two together and create competitive games. The ideas and possibilities are endless! Bring your imagination, a desire to explore, and take an opportunity to dip into programming without taking a full course.

Studio Ghibli and Crafts

Spend the day immersed in the magical world of acclaimed Japanese animation by Studio Ghibli. We’ll start the morning with a dive into the history of this award-winning production company and learn what makes it unique. Over the course of the day, participants will watch two classic Studio Ghibli movies and make their very own keepsake craft. We'll even sample some tasty Japanese treats!

Music and Tours

Students will tour the Music Division of the Library of Congress with a concert producer from the LOC. We will see original manuscripts of composers such as Copland, Bernstein, and Gershwin, to name a few, and tour the Coolidge Auditorium. After lunch, we will take a self-guided tour of the U.S. Capitol and Supreme Court. At the end of the day, we head to Starbucks for a quick refresher before heading home.

Glenstone Museum

Did you know that we have a world-renowned modern art and architecture museum right here in Potomac? Visit Glenstone to see the art of the highest quality in a beautifully constructed building, on a bucolic and serene campus. After our visit, we will eat lunch at Montgomery Mall and reflect on the different moods these very different venues evoke in us.

Hydro Dipping

In this workshop, students will explore the art of Hydro dipping, which involves dipping a canvas or objects into a water-filled bucket of spray paint. The results of this process are mesmerizing and fascinating. Students will have the opportunity to learn some fun and easy Hydro-dipping techniques and explore the Hydro dipping of different objects. Come learn the step-by-step process involved in Hydro dipping and create some gorgeous works of art.

A Day of Illusions

Spend a day in the fascinating world of illusions. Be prepared to be tricked in the new Museum of Illusions, where nothing seems what it is. We will visit the gallery in DC in the morning and will return to Norwood for lunch. In the afternoon, we will watch Christopher Nolan's movie The Prestige, a thrilling film about a duel of illusions between two great magicians.

of the ‘60s

Transport yourself back in time to the 1960s. Enjoy a day full of the music, art, culture, and political energy of the ‘60s (but not any of the drugs!). We will create art projects (and maybe music; at the very least, we will be LISTENING to a lot of music), enjoy snacks that were popular at the time, and otherwise dive into a very groovy decade.

Dungeons and Dragons

Goblins, Elves, Dragons, and fantasy abound! In Dungeons and Dragons, you, the players, form an adventuring party who explore fantasy worlds together as they embark on epic quests and level up in experience. Enjoy a game that focuses on story telling with every decision in your hands (and in the dice rolls), from how you look, to how you act, to what happens next. The collective creativity in your D&D game builds stories that you’ll tell again and again ranging from the stuff of legend to absurd incidents that’ll make you laugh years later. There’s no winning or losing in D&D at least, not in the conventional way. Come have fun and remember the golden rule never split the party!

Are you interested in learning how to play an amazing Olympic winter sport? Then, Let's Go Curling! We will meet at Norwood and travel to Potomac Curling Club to learn all about curling, the team sport where you slide stones on ice. We will then practice and play a real curling game! Afterward, we will have lunch at a nearby restaurant where we can discuss the glories of the game!

A Morning of Service with Martha’s Table

To promote access to healthy food to families in Washington, DC’s Wards 7 and 8, Martha's Table offers a full-service no-cost grocery market. We will join the Martha's Table team at their headquarters in Southeast, DC, to help set up and operate the market, assist with shopping from a menu of vegetables, fruits, and pantry items, maintain inventory, unload delivery trucks, build pre-packaged grocery bags, and general maintenance. This is a front-facing activity with direct interaction with community members. We will work from 9:00am-12:00pm and then have lunch on our way back to Norwood

Everyone Is a Suspect: A Day of Murder Mysteries

Do you fancy yourself the next Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Nancy Drew, or Jo Wyatt? Then come join in a day of murder murder mysteries that is! Perhaps you will prove the innocence of journalist Carl Notebeck, who is accused of murder by arson. Or maybe it will be you and your team that figures out who murdered famed chef Lorenzo Ritelli in his own New York restaurant just before a big event. In the morning, enjoy working with your team to solve those mysteries. In the afternoon we'll relax and enjoy watching a master crime solver do their work as we watch Murder on the Orient Express
