Sporting Success for New Alumna

In June, recent sixth form leaver Cate Matthew came second in the British Sprint Orienteering Championships! This year the competition was held on campus at Warwick University. Competitors took part in two races, a qualifier and final, which were both around 3.6km in length. This was only made more difficult by the increasing heat throughout the day.

Cate has competed in many orienteering events during her time at LGGS

Cate quickly overtook her fellow competitors who started one and two minutes before her - one of whom being a close personal rival. “I was very pleased about that,” Cate told us. Well done, Cate!

Refugee Week with Alumna Caitlin Luna

As part of our commitment to building an inclusive society, we invited asylum seekers and refugees into our school to share their stories with our students. Assemblies were held for each year group, as well as lunchtime Q&A sessions, all organised by alumna Caitlin Luna from RAIS (Refugee Advocacy, Information and Support) Lancaster. Thank you, Caitlin!

In some not entirely coincidental news, we also recently achieved School of Sanctuary status! At the award ceremony, we bumped into alumna Rebecca Novell, who is now the senior manager of LRIT, the Lancashire Refugee Integration Team. Rebecca let us know our hard work has made her “very proud to be an LGGS girl ”

GCSE and A-Level Art Exhibition

Midsummer’s day this year marked the celebration of all of our GCSE and A-Level art students’ hard work with the annual LGGS Art Exhibition. The art department building was transformed into a gallery space, and our guests were also treated to cheese and wine along with all of the beautiful art.

“The outstanding quality of the projects on display are a testament to the hard work, creativity and dedication of our pupils,” said Claire Nickell, Head of Art, on the day. “Each piece of work reflects not only a deep understanding of the subject matter, but also the personal commitment and passion of our students. Their achievements are a source of inspiration and a clear indicator of the bright futures that lie ahead.”

Year 13 Leavers’ Ball

At the end of June our Year 13 students celebrated their time with us at the Leavers' Ball. It was wonderful seeing all of our former students again, especially with them no longer being under the stress of their exams! With their A-Levels firmly behind them, our new alumnae were able to let loose and have fun with all of their friends before going off to university, travelling, or into the world of work.

Everyone looked fantastic in their dresses and suits, and, thanks to our new Chronicle team, we have plenty of pictures from the night!

We were blessed with sunshine for the Midsummer Supper Run this year!

It was good to see so many students enjoying their evening, especially with so many of them having only just completed their exams. As you can probably tell from our photos, the turnout was fantastic! There were lots of smiling faces on the night, and we believe the chip butties after the race were very much enjoyed, too.

Thank you to those who helped support our students and the school, and congratulations to everyone who took part in the run.

Midsummer Supper Run

Ten of our fabulous year 12 students visited Wray Primary School last Thursday to deliver a whole day of multicultural activities. “Our sixth formers encouraged their eager little participants to learn about different cultures beyond their own through running workshops in Indian and Pakistani dance, African drumming, European playground games and Henna,” said Kate Whitehouse, Head of MFL. “Our year 12s were fantastic role models for the younger children and impressively adapted their activities and grew in confidence as the day went on. We left the school with happy little faces proudly waving their beautifully painted henna hands at us and children showing off Bollywood moves in the playground. The primary children were brilliant, too, and we are grateful to all the staff and pupils of Wray Primary School for giving our students this opportunity to volunteer.”

Year 12 Work Experience

In May our Year 12 students took part in a week-long work experience placement. This immersion into the professional world - and in some pretty impressive areas of industry - offered them the opportunity to explore potential future career avenues, and will undoubtedly shape their path into the workplace or higher education after leaving us.

Our students ‘scrubbed in’ and observed a surgery, engaged in National Trust conservation efforts, learned how to use forensic equipment, shadowed lawyers in a court case, and one student even wrote an article that you can read here!

Alumnae Involvement

Careers Talks

At the start of June we invited alumna Charlotte to talk to our Year 12 students about degree apprenticeship opportunities. Charlotte, who works for Mott MacDonald, talked about her experience working for a global, high-profile firm. As she only left LGGS 2 years ago, her talk really resonated with our students

If you are available to talk to our students, virtually or in person, about your career and experiences beyond LGGS, and the numerous routes and opportunities that are available to our current cohort, we would love to hear from you!
