THE FEMALE DEFAULT Inspired by The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir by lexibusss
The patriarchy can best be explained as the systemic default of men, continuously reducing women to an afterthought. Simone de Beauvoir analyzes this oppression in her famed book, The Second Sex, by reviewing history from a feminist perspective.
The male default is apparent in many aspects of modern daily life, from the safety features of the cars we drive to the marketing of hygiene products to sports teams. In this zine, I use irony to reimagine common phrases and famous quotes that adopt a male-default language, instead visualizing an alternate female default language to illustrate the absurd nature of discounting over half of the world's population in seemingly gender neutral statements.
One small step for woman, one giant leap for womankind.

I now pronounce you, woman and husband!
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all women are created equal."
